anchester played a crucial role in the American victory at the Battle of Bennington on August 16, 1777. On July 15, 1777, only a week after the constitution of the “free and independent state of Vermont” had been adopted at Windsor on the Connecticut River, the Vermont Council of Safety met at Manchester to devise ways to stop British General John Burgoyne’s advance down the Champlain Valley. Ira Allen, the Council’s secretary, sent out appeals for help, and New Hampshire quickly responded. General John Stark raised a force of close to 1,500 militiamen, and in early August they crossed into the Valley of Vermont to protect the supplies stored at Bennington. Camped at Manchester on the day of the battle, Col. Seth Warner regrouped the Green Mountain Boys, as ordered by General Arthur St. Clair. These troops arrived at the battlefield near Bennington in the nick of time to turn the tide for the American Patriots. Manchester’s major traffic roundabout at the intersection of Routes 7A and 11-30 conceals the oldest marble bridge in Vermont. Nearby amid retail stores and factory outlets are an ancient riverwalk along the Battenkill and artisans in glass and woodcraft.

Unforgettably Unique Maryland Road Trips We’ve planned them. All you have to do is enjoy the ride.
Looking for the ultimate road trip with one-of-a-kind sights and side trips along the way? You just found it. Actually you’ve found 18 of them. Meet Maryland’s 18 scenic byways. Each carefully mapped driving route takes you on a journey to areas rich with beauty, history and culture. Themed tours transport you through mountain passes once traveled by American pioneers onboard Conestoga wagons; they incorporate the most interesting destinations bordering Washington, D.C.; they wind along country roads in Southern Maryland; and they urge you to make new discoveries on the peaceful shores of the Chesapeake Bay.
No matter which scenic byway you choose, you’ll find ways to indulge all five senses – from hiking, biking, fishing and boating to antiquing, touring a winery, dining on authentic seafood at waterfront restaurants or taking in a show. Enjoy the ride.
Relax and enjoy the drive and all the stops along the way!
Get your Scenic Byways Guide at Visitmaryland.org or by calling 877-632-9929.
