maine A getaway to Maine means encountering wild country, quiet beauty and the hardworking originality of the people that call the state home. It also means discovering a little something about yourself. That moment might come when you summit Cadillac Mountain to see the sunrise before anyone else in the United Sates. Or when you stumble upon a resonant masterpiece at the Portland Museum of Art. Or that moment might come when you crack into a fresh caught, just boiled and buttered lobster and you think to yourself, this is me. Maine might have more than its fair share of iconic lighthouses and savory lobster, but oh is there so much more. With Northeast Whitewater’s Moose Watching Tours, you can hike and canoe your way to capturing the perfect moment with a Maine moose. For a little more adrenaline,
grab a paddle and get ready for a wild, white-water ride. On the Penobscot, Kennebec or Dead River with an experienced guide leading the way, all you’ll have to do is try to keep your camera dry. If you have some little ones in tow, head over to the Coastal Maine Botanical Garden for a kid-friendly stroll through natural splendor. Maine Foodie Tours understands that any real adventure works up an appetite. They’ll take your taste buds on the ultimate Maine tour of Portland, Bar Harbor, Rockland, Camden, Kennebunkport or Boothbay Harbor. Wash it all down with a tour on the Maine Brew Bus, where you can explore the vibrant craft beer scene on tours like the Best of Portland or the Casco Fiasco. For even more Maine discoveries, and to start planning your vacation, head to VisitMaine.com.

The word “Ogunquit” means “beautiful place by the sea”. Ogunquit is beautiful for different reasons - some love the salty-sweet scent of beach roses on sea breezes, some enjoy playing tag with the lapping tide as sand caresses their bare feet, while others enjoy the nostalgic village feel of quaint buildings, coves, oceanside walkways and pedestrian bridges. Centrally located on the southern Maine Coast, Ogunquit is a great home port for experiencing the entire region. Come visit us and make Ogunquit your beautiful place by the sea.

The sand was kind of like a bridge with an island at the end of it. My sister started walking a little faster,
so I started walking a little faster. Then she started running and then we were racing to it. There were little tide pools all over the island. We were looking for starfish. Wait—is that a pirate ship? Mom said it’s called
a windjammer. We had to watch the tide so we didn’t get marooned like pirates. I wouldn’t have minded. We were together. But then I remembered we were going to get ice cream. Today was perfect. This is me.

New England’s Mount Washington Cog Railway -Still climbing after 150 years . The Mount Washington Cog Railway, the first mountain– climbing cog railway in the world, is celebrating 150 years of business this year in 2019. The Cog, (as it is affectionately nicknamed) is located in the beautiful White Mountains of New Hampshire, 6 miles from the grand Mount Washington Hotel. The Cog has remained a key icon of New Hampshire’s heritage and has maintained its historic roots by allowing passengers to take the three-hour round-trip riding in a historically inspired coach powered by a 1912 vintage coal-fired steam locomotive or one of the modern biodiesel engines, all built on-site. The mountain train experience is a must-do New England adventure. As the Cog’s 150th season gets underway, there will be a number of events and activities in celebration of this momentous anniversary, making this the perfect time to make the trip to New England’s most iconic historic attraction. Passengers experience views reaching from the Atlantic Ocean into Canada as the train reaches the summit on their
journey. Once at the top, visitors will find Mount Washington State Park and the Sherman Adams Visitors Center. This hearty mountain-top facility houses a winter weather exhibit, cafeteria, gift shop and restrooms. There is an hour to visit the 1853 Tip Top House, (the original hiker’s hotel) enjoy a snack, explore the state park building and take in the magnificent view from the rocky summit. Back at the mountain base, the new Cog Railway Museum, located in the upper level, tells visitors the fascinating story of how the historic railway came to be and offers media presentations and interactive exhibits. Visitors can also peruse the gift shop full of local and custom items to find that perfect Cog gift or souvenir. The Cog Railway is located at 3168 Base Road, Mount Washington, NH just six miles from historic Bretton Woods and Rte. 302, 3 hours north of Boston and 6 hours north of NYC.
