maine A getaway to Maine means encountering wild country, quiet beauty and the hardworking originality of the people that call the state home. It also means discovering a little something about yourself. That moment might come when you summit Cadillac Mountain to see the sunrise before anyone else in the United Sates. Or when you stumble upon a resonant masterpiece at the Portland Museum of Art. Or that moment might come when you crack into a fresh caught, just boiled and buttered lobster and you think to yourself, this is me. Maine might have more than its fair share of iconic lighthouses and savory lobster, but oh is there so much more. With Northeast Whitewater’s Moose Watching Tours, you can hike and canoe your way to capturing the perfect moment with a Maine moose. For a little more adrenaline,
grab a paddle and get ready for a wild, white-water ride. On the Penobscot, Kennebec or Dead River with an experienced guide leading the way, all you’ll have to do is try to keep your camera dry. If you have some little ones in tow, head over to the Coastal Maine Botanical Garden for a kid-friendly stroll through natural splendor. Maine Foodie Tours understands that any real adventure works up an appetite. They’ll take your taste buds on the ultimate Maine tour of Portland, Bar Harbor, Rockland, Camden or Kennebunkport. Wash it all down with a tour on the Maine Brew Bus, where you can explore the vibrant craft beer scene on tours like the Best of Portland or the Casco Fiasco. For even more Maine discoveries, and to start planning your vacation, head to VisitMaine.com.

This could take a while. But here are the finer points: we were going down a two-
lane highway, through Mexico (yeah, in Maine) and you eventually come to a clearing and you’re in Coos Canyon. Someone in the backseat says “Slow down,” and all
of a sudden we’re looking down from a 25-foot cliff, jumping into the river. Crazy. Then we find out we’re only a few miles from Tumbledown Mountain, and well,
we’re here, so – does that answer your question? This is my story and this is me.

Nantucket island —best-preserved seaport in America —immerses you in a place where whaling and four centuries of history and culture remain powerful presences. Several venerable museums set the stage for those curious about its beckoning past. Tiny and windswept, ringed by more than 80 miles of world-acclaimed beaches, Nantucket’s geographical character is preserved by thousands of acres — nearly half of the island — of conservation lands filled with glorious diversities of flora and fauna. From town, 32 miles of cycling paths unfurl like ribbons toward the island’s furthest dazzling reaches. While on island, feast on palate-pleasing island-fresh seafood, haute cuisine and simpler renditions of culinary classics — or take a culinary class! Shop the island’s eclectic boutiques, distinctive galleries and purveyors of merchandise from around the globe. There is one certainty — no one leaves Nantucket unmoved.

ne of the most curious episodes in Vermont history took place in the winter of 1780-81, before the American Revolution had ended. British agents met at Ethan and Ira Allen’s home here in Sunderland. Their hope was that Vermont would join British Canada. Ethan was challenged by his Green Mountain comrade, Seth Warner. But he pressed on and even appeared before the Vermont General Assembly, where his eloquence ad:Layout earned 1 8/29/11 3:11 PM Page 1 their vote of confidence. Ethan Allen’s probable strategy was to provoke the Continental Congress, after two rejections, to admit Vermont as a state rather than risk defection to the British. Nothing came of the plot, yet statehood took another ten years. In 1791, after negotiations, Vermont paid New York $30,000 in gold coins to settle all land claims. After it citizens ratified the Constitution Vermont became the fourteenth state. Sunderland is also known for its Chiselville neighborhood, so named for the water-powered factory that manufactured chisels in the 19th century. A scenic attraction is the Chiselville covered bridge, high over the Roaring Branch. It is not true that Ira Allen is buried in the Sunderland cemetery named for him. Alas, Ira, who was a founder of the University of Vermont in 1793, died in poverty in Philadelphia and is buried there.

anchester played a crucial role in the American victory at the Battle of Bennington on August 16, 1777. On July 15, 1777, only a week after the constitution of the “free and independent state of Vermont” had been adopted at Windsor on the Connecticut River, the Vermont Council of Safety met at Manchester to devise ways to stop British General John Burgoyne’s advance down the Champlain Valley. Ira Allen, the Council’s secretary, sent out appeals for help, and New Hampshire quickly responded. General John Stark raised a force of close to 1,500 militiamen, and in early August they crossed into the Valley of Vermont to protect the supplies stored at Bennington. Camped at Manchester on the day of the battle, Col. Seth Warner regrouped the Green Mountain Boys, as ordered by General Arthur St. Clair. These troops arrived at the battlefield near Bennington in the nick of time to turn the tide for the American Patriots. Manchester’s major traffic roundabout at the intersection of Routes 7A and 11-30 conceals the oldest marble bridge in Vermont. Nearby amid retail stores and factory outlets are an ancient riverwalk along the Battenkill and artisans in glass and woodcraft.
