Goodbye
Brick Road
The life story of Elton John has been thoroughly detailed in his 2019 memoir, Me, and on film in the big-screen biopic Rocketman. Yet there’s more story to tell that’s unfolded in the years since then, as the legendary singer, songwriter and pianist embarked on his globe-spanning, multicontinent Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour, which spanned from 2018 until concluding last year.
Co-directed by acclaimed documentary filmmaker R.J. Cutler and John’s husband, David Furnish, Elton John: Never Too Late finds Sir Elton reflecting on the past as he prepares for his final North American concert at Dodger Stadium. “Elton takes us back in time and recounts the extraordinary highs and heartbreaking lows of his early years and how he overcame adversity, abuse and addiction to become the icon he is today,” declares the synopsis.
Never Too Late also explores the first five years of his career, from 1970 to 1975, an extraordinarily fruitful period in which he released 13 albums, seven of which hit No. 1. As a bonus, the film features a new original song, along with never-before-seen concert footage of John Lennon joining him
onstage for three songs during a 1974 show at Madison Square Garden in New York City — which turned out to be Lennon’s final appearance on a stage.
Also included in the film are John’s handwritten diaries and the audio recordings from his landmark 1976 interview with Rolling Stone, in which he opened up about his sexuality for the first time.
“Most of the footage from the ’70s Elton hasn’t seen before at all,” Furnish told Deadline. “It was really fun to finally be able to unearth all these gems and have a really good comb through everything that we’ve been accumulating for such a long time.”

Inspired by the beloved 1997 British comedy, this two-hour special features an array of male celebs showing off their stripping skills. Blackish alum Anthony Anderson has gathered a cast (including himself) that includes Taye Diggs, Chris Jones, Tyler Posey, Bruno Tonioli and James Van Der Beek, and viewers follow their efforts as they train and rehearse for the most revealing performance of their careers, culminating with a big strip-tease dance (choreographed by Emmy-winner
Mandy Moore) in which they bare all in front of a live audience. It’s all for a good cause, to encourage men to be screened for testicular and prostate cancer. “Don’t die of embarrassment. Get checked! That’s the message behind The Real Full Monty special,” said Anderson in a statement. “I am honoured to lead the charge of rallying these fearless men to bare it all, in order to provoke, inspire and in this case, beg you to get screened for cancer. ANNIE’S GOT A BRAND-NEW BOOK!
I was so totally in love with The Idea of You when it came out. Do you know if they’re doing another one?
V.K., Dawson Creek Prime Video’s romantic dramedy, based on the 2017 novel by Robinne Lee, was a hit with critics and audiences alike when it debuted on the streaming service this past May. The tale of a 40-something single mother
(Anne Hathaway) who sparks an unlikely love affair with a young pop star (Nicholas Galitzine) while taking her teen daughter to his concert proved just the right blend of comfortfood fairy-tale romance and poignant exploration of the double standards faced by women when it comes to dating (and everything else).
Alas, though the film did end on something of a cliffhanger, it does not appear a sequel is in the works. But if it’s any consolation, leading lady Hathaway and her Idea of You director Michael Showalter are both sticking

with Prime for another very intriguing (albeit considerably less romantic) film based on a bestselling novel. This time, the novel in question was written by Colleen Hoover, whose tome It Ends With Us was recently turned into one of the biggest box-office successes of the summer.
Verity will, per a report by Variety, cast Hathaway as the title character, “a famous author who is unable to finish her thriller novel after a car accident leaves her badly injured and incapacitated. So her husband Jeremy offers a struggling writer named Lowen a huge sum of money to complete the remaining books in the series. Lowen accepts the gig but uncovers dark secrets in the process — including an unfinished manuscript that hints at chilling admissions about Verity and her family’s past — leaving Lowen to determine if Verity is a gifted fictionist or deranged psychopath.”
Hathaway will also serve as an executive producer on the film. Release date is TBD.
THE GREAT EQUALIZER
I wasn’t sold on Queen Latifah in the new Equalizer at first, but I have to say she’s won me over. Which means they’re about to cancel it, given my luck! Am I wrong?
R.E., Victoria
By all accounts, this remake of the iconic ’80s action thriller is still going strong, now in the middle of season five. We likely won’t hear about a renewal until sometime this spring, but in a good sign that CBS still has faith in the brand, the network and the show’s producers are currently casting two characters set to be introduced in episode 16, after the winter hiatus, who — if popular enough — will go on to lead their own Equalizer spinoff.
Per Deadline, those characters are: “a skilled younger female martial artist, weapons expert and criminologist with a secret origin story who turns to McCall for help, and an older male former top CIA operative.”

I remember, as a teenage girl living in North Van, that one of the only TV series that had a great action role model for girls was The Girl From U.N.C.L.E. and I would love to see it again.
G.W., via email
The Girl From U.N.C.L.E. was a 1966 spinoff of The Man From U.N.C.L.E., which starred David McCallum as Soviet spy Illya Kuryakin and Robert Vaughn as American counterpart Napoleon Solo. It ran for two successful seasons before spinning off Stefanie Powers as April Dancer, an agent partnered up with a fellow operative named Mark Slate (played by Noel Harrison, son of the great Rex Harrison).
For the record, “U.N.C.L.E.” is an acronym for “United Network Command for Law and Enforcement,” the international agency by which all the characters are employed. An episode titled “The Moonglow Affair” was used as a backdoor pilot in the winter of 1966, which starred former Miss America Mary Ann Mobley as Dancer. But Mobley was recast with Powers after the pilot was picked up.
Unfortunately, critics and audiences did not warm up to the concept, nor to its new star, and the series was cancelled after just one season, with The Man From U.N.C.L.E. getting the axe the very next year. The last laugh belonged to Powers, however, as she went on to headline the very popular Hart to Hart with Robert Wagner for a five-season run followed by several TV movies.
Unfortunately, The Girl From U.N.C.L.E. is not available on DVD or via streaming service in Canada at this time.

ONE HUNDRED YEARS OF SOLITUDE
Wednesday, Netflix
Aprolific journalist and author, Colombian Nobel Prize-winner Gabriel García Márquez is revered among literary aficionados as the godfather of magical realism. Now, the 1967 novel that’s been dubbed his masterpiece comes to TV in a 16-part series, the first half of which premieres on Wednesday.
A story that spans generations starts in the 1820s, as kissing cousins José Arcadio Buendía (Marco González) and Úrsula Iguarán (Susana Morales) get married in defiance of their families and set off with a group of like-minded misfits to found the village of
Macondo, where all are free to choose their own destiny. Alas, this utopian dream is plagued by “madness, impossible loves, a bloody and absurd war, and a terrible curse that condemns them, without hope, to 100 years of solitude.” The story then continues all the way to the heroic yet doomed Colonel Aureliano Buendía, played by Claudio Cataño. Speaking to Netflix, the actor teased: “Macondo and its host of characters, who I truly feel as my own blood, are universal, but at the same time so unique — so from Colombia, so beautifully tragic that it is impossible not to be trapped in this world.”
Having scored an Emmy for their cartoon sci-fi anthology Love, Death + Robots on Netflix, Deadpool director Tim Miller and his groundbreaking Blur Studio offer up another dose of visually dazzling, thoughtprovoking animation. This time, however, they’re doing it at Prime Video, and they’re using video games as inspiration.
Secret Level whisks us away via 15 standalone episodes based on such games as Mega
Man, Unreal Tournament, Dungeons & Dragons, Warhammer 40,000 and even the indelible PAC-MAN. More impressive than the list of games is the list of voice talent, which will include Keanu Reeves, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Kevin Hart, The Book of Boba Fett’s Temuera Morrison, Barbie’s Ariana Greenblatt and two stars of HBO’s video game hit The Last of Us: Gabriel Luna and Merle Dandridge.

He’s given acclaimed performances in Elton John biopic Rocketman and Emmywinning true crime drama Black Bird, but Taron Egerton got his start in the blockbuster Kingsman franchise. Now, he returns to those action-packed roots with a Netflix original flick from veteran genre director Jaume ColletSerra (Non-Stop, The Shallows).
Here, he plays Ethan, a young TSA agent who works at the airport alongside his pregnant girlfriend Nora (Descendants breakout Sofia Carlson). As we open, it’s Christmas Eve, which turns LAX into even more of a zoo than usual. But that inherent holiday chaos takes a turn for the nightmarish when Ethan is contacted by a mystery man (Jason Bateman, back on Netflix after four Emmy-winning seasons of Ozark), who tells our bewildered protagonist that he needs to let a dangerous package slip through security or else Nora will be killed.
What ensues is a pulse-pounding chess match, as Ethan tries to save
his true love without sacrificing the lives he’s duty-bound to protect — while facing a cunning adversary who seems to know his every move before he makes it.
Discussing the project with Tudum, Egerton said: “When Jaume first approached me about the role, I told him I didn’t want to do something that felt like an archetypal action hero. Luckily, neither of us thought that’s what was exciting or interesting about Ethan. What we kept our eyes on was making sure that we made him feel as relatable and as normal as possible . . . whatever normal is in the extraordinary situation he’s in.”
Added the director: “Contained environments force us to get to know the movie’s characters very quickly and personally — we’re immediately in the thick of the story with them, which creates a genuine investment in what’s happening onscreen.”

In April of 2023, while filming his latest movie in Atlanta, Jamie Foxx, one of Hollywood’s biggest stars, suffered a mysterious health crisis that pushed him to the brink of death.
Details on the particular nature of that crisis have been scant, but a TikTok video posted online over a year later found Foxx informally addressing the issue with a group of people on the street. In it, he says the problem started with a headache, after which he asked a friend for an Advil and then . . . he doesn’t remember a single thing for the next 20 days. The Oscar winner has since made a full recovery, but inquiring minds still want to know: What, precisely, happened?
Luckily for those minds, the actor is finally ready to open up about the physical and emotional fallout by returning to his roots as a comedian — with a Netflix special filmed, appropriately enough, in Atlanta.

PARIS & NICOLE: THE ENCORE
Thursday, 6 p.m. & 7 p.m., Slice
In December of 2003, Fox debuted The Simple Life, introducing us to a pair of young socialites named Nicole Richie and Paris Hilton. The former was the daughter of pop star Lionel Richie, the latter a scion of the Hilton hotel empire — and together, across five seasons and two networks, they helped define the still-burgeoning reality TV genre. Specifically, the two privileged pals travelled the U.S. to see how the other half lived, trying their impeccably manicured hands at such jobs as farming and camp counselling.
More than just the stars of a hit show, Paris and Nicole became the embodiment of the 2000-era “party girl,” in a swirl of feuds, scandals,
arrests and one infamous sex tape. As Hilton wrote in her 2023 bestseller Paris: The Memoir: “The character I played — part Lucy, part Marilyn — was my steelplated armour. People loved her. Or they loved to hate her, which was just as marketable. I leaned into that character, my ticket to financial freedom and a safe place to hide.”
Now both in their 40s, both married with two kids, the duo are ready to revisit those tumultuous times with a three-part reunion special “full of fun, chaos and epic one-liners.”
It finds Paris and Nicole updating fans on their lives as they mount a very tonguein-cheek opera based on their old Simple Life catchphrase, “Sanasa!”

The serial-killing journey of Dexter Morgan begins in this new prequel
DEXTER: ORIGINAL SIN
Friday, Paramount+
very so often, a story comes along that grips a generation. For many, one such story follows a vigilante serial killer named Dexter Morgan. A semi-sympathetic figure, Michael C. Hall’s iconic character from the 2006-’13 series Dexter walked a razor’s edge between chilling and likable. The Dexter fans know and love is getting a different treatment this time around, as viewers are transported back to a simpler, less criminal time for the budding moral avenger in Dexter: Original Sin.
While Hall returns to the project — which should come as no surprise given his ongoing ties to the franchise, reprising the role in 2021's Dexter: New Blood — his involvement is limited to narration duties as the actor passes the baton to The OA’s Patrick Gibson Gibson, who also appeared in the 2019 film Tolkien and the Netflix fantasy series Shadow and Bone, takes young Dexter back to a place of uncertainty while he grapples with strange urges bubbling to the surface as he begins work as a forensics intern at the Miami Metro Police Department.
“Set in 1991 Miami, Dexter: Original
Sin follows Dexter . . . as he transitions from student to avenging serial killer,” reads the official Paramount+ press description. “When his bloodthirsty urges can’t be ignored any longer, Dexter must learn to channel his inner darkness. With the guidance of his father, Harry [Christian Slater, Dr. Death], he adopts a code designed to help him find and kill people who deserve to be eliminated from society without getting on law enforcement’s radar.”
The series focuses on Dexter’s descent into the dark world that surrounds his everyday life, from his personal troubles at home to the onslaught of cases coming through the door during his first foray into the professional world at the MMPD. In the trailer, Dexter, voiced by Hall, explains how his unique predilections came to fruition.
“I am a killer, but I wasn’t born this way,” Hall says as Dexter’s conscience, over a series of establishing shots. “I was made — by my history, by the people around me. They say it takes a village to raise a killer.”
Joining Gibson and Slater in the new series are several other big names in cinema and television, including former Grey’s Anatomy star Patrick Dempsey, Christina Milian (Meet Me Next Christmas), Evil’s Molly Brown and Reno Wilson of Good Girls.
Some fans, however, are most excited for the return of another recognizable figure to television: none other than Buffy Summers herself, Sarah Michelle Gellar. While the former Buffy the Vampire Slayer star will, understandably, not be portraying the snarky, vampire-fighting high schooler of 1990s cable in Original Sin, Gellar’s return to series television remains highly anticipated.
Announced as a guest star, Gellar plays young Dexter’s boss, crime scene investigation chief Tanya Martin. And although Gellar hasn’t been completely absent from television in recent years — the actress has voice-starred in everything from The Simpsons to Masters of the Universe: Revelation and appeared in streaming-only series such as Paramount+’s Wolfpack — her casting announcement sent a wave of excitement through the ranks of the diehard Buffy fanbase. Gellar, too, has shown much excitement for the role she referred to as her “dream job” at San Diego Comic-Con in July.
“We’re playing in the ’90s,” says Gellar, who shot to fame in Joss Whedon’s cult classic series in 1997. “I’m used to playing these formidable women and [Tanya Martin] is no exception . . . because women didn’t run departments in those jobs. They certainly didn’t run the science departments, and they certainly didn’t do it in Miami.
“She’s gotta be pretty tough to be able to hang with the guys,” Gellar continued while appearing at Comic Con’s Variety booth. “I’m on set all day long and I’m the only girl.”
Following the San Diego-based convention this past summer, Variety also announced that another sequel series, Dexter: Resurrection, set to take place in the present day, will debut some time in the summer of 2025.
Meanwhile, it’s worth noting that the Dexter franchise has seen a resurgence in popular culture as of late, with the original series ranking second for overall streams in late June of this year. ■

LUCY WORSLEY’S HOLMES VS. DOYLE
Sunday, 5 p.m., WTVS; 8 p.m., KCTS
hick tweed fabrics, cozy closed-door home libraries and leather-bound books are all trending on social media this winter. The aesthetic — now often referred to as “dark academia” — hearkens back to a simpler time, one in which low lighting, wingback chairs and rich, luscious textiles are key for setting the mood. Some might say that the only thing missing is a deerstalker cap and a good mystery novel — and they would be right.
Fictional detective Sherlock Holmes has undoubtedly had an impact on the readers of the world (and in the realms of fashion and home decor, too, it would seem), but perhaps no one has been more affected by the sleuth than his own author, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
In the new three-part docuseries Lucy Worsley’s Holmes vs. Doyle, the titular television host does some investigating of her own, uncovering how the lives of the man and his most popular creation came to echo one another in an uncanny harmony, often to the author’s detriment.
Throughout his 137 years on the page, Sherlock Holmes has solved 60 separate cases across 56 short stories and four novels, but the biggest mystery of them all has been lying just beneath the surface of the fiction. For years, it appeared that Doyle — a private detective in his own right — despised his most prized creation, but why he grew to dislike the fictional character was never quite clear . . . until now.
“[Worsley] explores Doyle’s desire to distance himself from Sherlock after the detective’s apparent death at the Reichenbach Falls,” the description reads. “From the delights of the ski slopes to the horrors of the Boer War, she reveals how far Doyle went to make himself the hero of his own story. He even took on the role of detective himself in one of the most important legal cases of the 20th century.”
By the time viewers arrive at the conclusion of the PBS docuseries on December 22, Worsley investigates the parallel timelines of both author and authored. By analyzing Doyle’s decision to bring his most iconic character back from the dead, the presenter illustrates where Doyle’s and Holmes’ personalities, decisions and life events began to converge before dovetailing, ultimately resulting in the character eclipsing the now-aging crime novelist.
“In the finale, ‘Shadows and Sleuths’ [Worsley] investigates the return of Sherlock,” says PBS. “Doyle began the Edwardian age delighting in all it had to offer, but as the First World War approached, the darkness of the later stories mirrored the reality of Doyle’s life. After losing his eldest son, he became an evangelist for spiritualism, and his star declined after a public spat with a famous magician. Sherlock Holmes, in contrast, found a life beyond his author on stage and screen.”
Historian Lucy Worsley delves into the complicated relationship between Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and his most famous fictional creation, Sherlock Holmes
In the first episode of Holmes vs. Doyle, Worsley travels back in time to the British author’s not-so-humble beginnings as a medical student in the lowland Scottish city of Edinburgh before diving into the cultural movements of the Victorian era in what is now the United Kingdom.
According to the PBS press release, Worsley “unpacks the early stories, revealing the dark underbelly of late Victorian Britain, from drug use to true crime. She explores how Doyle infused his stories with cutting-edge technological developments and traces the author’s growing disenchantment with his detective, heading to Switzerland to visit the site of one of the most famous deaths in literature.”
Moving through Doyle’s life and ever-growing oeuvre, the second episode (airing December 15) is heavily based upon the writer’s decision to kill off his beloved case cracker in his 1893 work The Final Problem, set two years earlier, in 1891.
According to writer and editor Ronald B. De Waal in his 1995 fourvolume compilation, The Universal Sherlock Holmes, the character has now been adapted into more than 25,000 forms, including works translated into 63 languages worldwide. From the written form to visual mediums such as film and television, Holmes’ reach extends far beyond that of the vast majority of living (or once living) people, something which continued to baffle Doyle long into his life and career.
“The curious thing is,” Doyle mused aloud to a camera in a 1928 interview with William Fox, “how many people around the world who are perfectly convinced that he is a living human being. I get letters addressed to him. I get letters asking for his autograph. I get letters addressed to his other stupid friend, Watson,” Doyle chuckles with a glimmer in his eye. “I even had ladies writing that they would be glad to act as his housekeeper.” (The latter portion being a clear, if moderately bemusing, sign of the times.)
And while this notable interview is available on YouTube for those who wish to seek it out, Sherlock Holmes fans truly need look no further than Worsley and her in-depth research. A self-proclaimed lifelong fan of Holmes in her own right — and Doyle, of course, by extension — Worsley “explores the parallel lives of Doyle and Holmes in the historical context of their times.” ■

Last Word... The
SEASON
FINALE
Laysla De Oliveira
BY MATT CURRIE
SPECIAL OPS: LIONESS
Sunday, Paramount+
QCruz ended season one on a very uncertain note. Was it always made clear to you that she’d be coming back?
AI’m going to be honest with you. We sign the contracts that we sign going into the show, so I had no idea that I wouldn’t be coming back for season two until I got a call from Taylor [Sheridan] at the end of the strike, and he explained the new storyline — which completely made sense. It makes for a much more interesting show to watch when it is a different mission and recruit every year. Of course, Laysla the actress was a little bit devastated, but Laysla the artist understood. And it was a very beautiful conversation with Taylor, because he changed my life with this job.
But after he was done writing the third episode, about six weeks later, he called me back and he was like, “You’re not goin’ anywhere.” [Laughs] Which was a great call to have, as well.
QWhy did Taylor struggle with writing this character back into the mix?
AAt the time, he didn’t know how he could bring Cruz back in a meaningful way, and he didn’t want me to miss out on opportunities. He said, “I’m going to let you go, because I don’t want you to just be a side character. I don’t want to do that to you.”
QIt’s a very intriguing way to enter the story, halfway through a season . . .
AAnd I think, also, the way things ended for Cruz, she does need that time off. So, yes, she’s deployed off the coast of Somalia. She’s also doing a lot of soul-searching, she’s trying to understand this geopolitical world and how she fits into it. With last season’s mission and how she fell in love and how all that ended, I don’t know if she completely agreed with what she did. But at the end of the day, her country is her biggest love. So, she’s really trying to understand the intricacies of that. She’s become a lot more, I would say, “book smart” this year. I was like, “Ooh, Cruz has been studying! I need to catch up to Cruz.” It’s a beautiful thing to see. I also think she starts to understand Joe [Zoe Saldaña] a lot more, which is a really beautiful thing in her journey.
MEMORABLE ROLES:
Following guest spots on iZombie and X-Men spinoff The Gifted, this Toronto-born actress got her break in 2020 on yet another comic book series — Netflix’s Nova Scotia-shot Locke &Key, where she played duplicitous underworld fiend Dodge for parts of three seasons.
CURRENT GIG:
In 2023, De Oliveira landed her biggest role to date with this military thriller from Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan. Flanked by the likes of Zoe Saldaña, Nicole Kidman and Morgan Freeman, she plays Cruz Manuelos — a patriotic but troubled U.S. soldier tapped by the CIA for a shady undercover mission. Season two opened to find her character in the wind, with Lioness boss Joe (Saldaña) getting her claws in another recruit (Genesis Rodriguez). But midway through the year, Cruz made a surprise return to the pride.
QThe entertainment world can be such a rollercoaster of near-constant rejection. How do you, personally, cope?
A I wish I had a great tip for that. The only thing I keep thinking of is . . . you know in Finding Nemo, where Dory’s like, “Just keep swimming, just keep swimming?” That’s what I think of when I think of acting. The highs are so high and the lows are so low. You really need to find ways to ground yourself — whatever that means for you. Find the people that you love and hold them close so that your happiness is not just dependent upon if you’re working or not, or if people think you’re popular right now. Because that will always be a rollercoaster.
Q
On that note, do you have any really horrifying audition stories?
A Horrifying? Gosh, I probably have blocked those out . . . I think my favourite audition story is for Lioness It’s not horrifying, it’s exciting because I ended up getting the part. But they flew me out to the set of Yellowstone while [Sheridan] was directing an episode, and I had to perform the entire first episode [of Lioness] for him on the set of Yellowstone, in between him directing. Like, two chairs, out on the field, in front of everybody [laughs]. If you could get through that, you could get through anything . . . But it was electrifying. That scene where I’m running from my abusive boyfriend in the first episode of season one — performing that live on the set of Yellowstone really gets your heart racing. I felt like it contributed to a good performance.

The powerhouse of energy and life-long vibrancy
What are mitochondria, and how do we spark them?
They are like very tiny powerplants that produce energy in every living cell in our bodies. On average, every cell has 1,500 mitochondria. Can you imagine that for their extremely small size, it’s been said that they produce, gram for gram, 10,000–50,000 times more energy than the sun?
To say that mitochondria are important to human health is grossly understating their role in our
survival. We literally would not be alive without them. They convert our food into energy, so that every other function of our body can occur as it needs to. As we age, our ability to create healthy mitochondria to support our energy demands diminishes. And because about 90% of our cellular energy is produced by mitochondria, this decline can cause significant health issues
