On behalf of everyone involved with the All Black Bull Sale, we would like to invite you to our 16th Annual Bull Sale. As I am writing this, I’m imagining every introduction is saying something about how hopefully 2021 is going to be a better year than last. One thing it did show us is there is always another way to do something and we can learn how to cope and adapt; this being something in agriculture which everyone is used to. Myself, I didn’t find it much different than an unexpected snowstorm during calving or getting 2 inches of rain the day you’re going to brand. You just make a game plan best suited for the hand you were dealt. We are extremely excited about the bulls on offer – we had a great year for grass and the bulls came home almost looking sale ready! This has made winter feeding much easier. We do have some new sire groups this year, which have worked out very well for us. There is also a larger selection of heifer bulls than we have ever had. Many of the heifer bulls will also work on cows – these bulls will still sire growthy steer calves and replacement heifers you won’t want to part with. With it looking like the COVID regulations will not be lessening before the sale, we encourage and will welcome anyone to come to the ranch to look at this year’s set of bulls. We will have videos up earlier this year and once again the sale will be on DLMS. So please feel free to contact us at anytime to ask questions or to come and view the bulls, cows, and next year’s prospects. We wanted to find an outcross bull, but one that was similar to what we had been using. VRD is noted for adding pounds and length to his calves - and I have always been interested in the older genetics. I was only able to source a few straws of semen and wished we could've gotten more. We were extremely pleased with the offsping!

His dam, 2167, is the daughter of BBAR Lady Monogram 167'96 a very powerful cow who has been a foundation to the BBAR program. OCC Legacy 839L has created much interest over the years and left many great progeny that keep many repeat buyers coming back. When looking at the cows it isn't hard to pick out the Legacy daughters, they are long, thick, and deep with so much eye appeal. BBAR High Stakes 220 has been used for the past 4 years in the purebred herd and we are extremely happy with the results.

During the winter of 2018 we had gone to tour Genex and saw Commando. Personally, I thought he was the most complete bull we saw that day and had tons of eye appeal - then to top it off a calving ease heifer bull. We AI'd all of our heifers in 2019 to him and my only regret was we didn't use him again the next year. We will be AIing the heifers again this year though!

We are really looking forward to seeing his daughters in production. His 10 year old dam has a flawless udder and great feet.

Any of our cows going back to 9660 do a great job. This moderate-framed bull will sire great steer calves and heifer calves you won’t want to part with.

Lot 13 & 14 are twins. Their Jipsey Earl dam is a heavy producing 11 year old cow. She weaned off 1090 between these 2 calves and bred back on the first cycle. These 2 bulls have eye appeal with depth and width. Two very moderate-framed bulls, that you could keep every heifer off of them.

Our December was busy with taking bred heifers to the Touch of Class Sale in Saskatoon and the Form and Function Sale in Lloydminster. The sale teams did an awesome job making the sales a success despite the regulations in place at the time. We are thankful that sales are able to be online allowing our industry to continue relatively normal. Ranch life is busier than ever for Ivan, and Julie retired from her office job to be at home full time. Chris continues to drive truck in the oilfield around Smiley and also worked for a farmer to fill in for the slow times. Jenna is busy at home with the 3 girls – Madison in Grade 4, Jordynn in Grade 3 and Kaycee in Pre-Kindergarten. They enjoy coming to Meadow Lake to help with branding, hauling cows, weighing, and other ranch activities. Lacey and Blair Brooks tied the knot in 2020 and we were so happy to all celebrate a beautiful June pasture wedding! She also started running the kitchen at the Stockyards in October. 2020 was certainly a year like no other and we are hoping 2021 brings us new beginnings! Videos will be available on the DLMS website along with the catalogue. This year more than ever, the videos are a great tool for selection as they provide a good representation of the bulls. We are pleased to be hosting our 16th Annual All Black Bull Sale at the Meadow Lake Stockyards. We have more bulls than ever sired by our walking sires and couldn’t be happier with them. We also have a varied selection of AI sired bulls and are excited about 2021! All of the AI sires we select have a balance of calving ease, fleshing ability and strong maternal traits. We also stress docility in our cow herd. This fall we weaned September 25th. The bulls have been fed Masterfeeds Bull ration and free choice hay. They have been vaccinated spring and pre-weaning with Bovi-Shield BVD One Shot vaccine and Inforce 3 to aid in the prevention of respiratory issues.

This year we are offering 3 of our top bulls from Island Hill Angus. Knowing that we are a small-scale ranch we can offer you the best of our 2020 crop. This past year has been a different lifestyle for most of us, we have all been impacted by the past year events. Being a local breeder, we pride ourselves with only our best. This year 2 of our bulls are sired from one of our own home raised AI herd sires Cole Creek Cedar Ridge IV out of a NetWorth daughter with a higher birth weight and lots of performance. Cedar Ridge is a top seller from Genex with proven longevity and produces outstanding working females. Thrive is the sire of our third bull in the sale, he is out of one of our Pioneer daughters who has consistently produced well for us. Unfortunately, we lost her last fall. He is an AI calf that is put together like his sire, mid framed, big barrelled with a great disposition. Changes for Island Hill Angus are on the horizon, but in the meantime we are continuing with our busy lives! Sheldon’s time is spent between his full-time work at Meadow Lake Mechanical Pulp Mill and his passion for the full-time work on the farm! Lori continues as a Registered Nurse at the Meadow Lake Hospital and the busy life of a mom. Emery is now 11 and in grade 6 and Beckson is 7 and in grade one. This year they are both in 4-H, but activities for the club have been very limited. We are still hoping for the achievement day at the end of the year. The kids have spent a lot less time with extra curricular activities and a lot more time outside on the farm!

49D is a bull we purchased in 2017 out of the Triple A Bull Test. I saw the old South Dakota bull in Billings and was very impressed with his quarter, spring of rib, and he was very good-footed. I was very impressed with 49D’s performance and the maternal side of his pedigree. A very popular AI sire from Genex noted for calving ease and performance. I had the opportunity to see Stunners sire LD Capitalist 316 in stud and I thought he was flat out awesome, however Capitalist semen is incredibly hard to come by as is Stunner semen now. These bulls were purchased in utero at the Windy Willows Herd Reduction sale – as we do not have any Stunner semen in the tank at home.

We saw this bull at Genex Stud – I was very impressed with his masculinity, feet and legs, and muscle pattern. This is our first set of calves and we are very happy with what we have seen so far. The Aberdeen bull is an older proven sire that we tried a few straws of a couple of years ago. We were impressed by his progeny, but his semen is very rare to come by.
