It is exciting times in the Cattle Industry with very strong prices in all categories of cattle.

Congratulations to all the breeders that hosted Bull Sales. It is great to see the top Quality Red Angus and Black Angus on offer in Manitoba. Along with viewing the Bulls on offer, it is a great time to view the breeders programs and meet new people in the Livestock Industry.

Bull Sale season is just over but there are more Angus Bulls available for sale by Private Treaty. Contact your local breeders.

This is a great time of year as there is nothing better than seeing Angus cows, calves and your herd bulls out grazing in the fields.

The Manitoba Angus Association and the Manitoba Junior Angus Association has a Summer Gold Show planned at Harding Fair, July 19, 2024.

Harding is a long time running, largest one day fair in Manitoba with lots of cattle and horse entries and of course , the feature is the Supreme Champion Female and Bulls win a spot at Canadian Agribition Supreme Competition November 20-24, 2024 .This is an event to mark on your calendar and come out and support the Angus Breeders. In 2025, Manitoba is hosting the Canadian Angus Association Annual Meetings in June. The Association is now working on plans for the event. Watch for more details in the upcoming issues of the Manitoba Angus Outlook.

With many visitors from around Canada in attendance at the CAA Annual Meetings, the board has decided to make a new Manitoba Angus Herd Directory.

It has been a number of years since we made the last Directory so please take time and fill out the form on Page 1. This is a great way for you as a Manitoba Angus breeder to get your name out and great advertising for your program. Some of the breeders that attend this AGM will want to go on farm tours or anyone travelling around Manitoba will have directions, farm names , etc right at their finger tips.

MANITOBA ANGUS ASSOCIATION PRESIDENT ’S MESSAGE

Good day Everyone,

Spring is finally here! With focuses starting to change for many producers, whether that’s switching focus from purebred to c ommercial cows calving, seeding, kicking cows out to grass, or breeding season. There is a lot on the go! Optimism regarding the beef industry is still at an all -time high, with cattle prices staying strong, some early widespread moisture across most of the province and wit h also seeing commodity prices settling down. I’ve had conversations with people in the Ag Industry about cattle, that haven’t once ever considered owning cattle in their entire life. The current heightened status of the beef industry has created lots of new con versations in the ag industry that haven’t been made before, in my opinion. Currently there is a lot going on in the MB Angus world that we want to share with you and many of these topics will be share d in detail throughout this issue of the Outlook. The most exciting news is, Manitoba will be the host of the 2025 Canadian Angus Convention which will be held in Winnipeg at the Fort Garry Hotel on June 11-15. I anxiously look forward to this event and all the planning that will unfold in the coming months. MB Angus is al so pleased to announce that we will be creating a new Manitoba Angus Herd Directory, with the goal of having the newest editions printed for next year’s Con vention. Since many of the breeders from the latest version of the directory are no longer in the business, we felt it was important that it was updated, esp ecially with many new breeders that have come on the scene as well.

But unfortunately, with good news there typically comes disappointing news as well. MB Angus will not be hosting the Keystone Klassic Angus sale for 2024. This was an extremely difficult decision made by the board as the Keystone sale has been a major priority for the board for m any years. The last few years we have spent countless hours discussing how to improve the sale and reaching out to numerous individuals for insight. With the support of the sale not being as strong as it once was, we felt it was time to move on as being hosts of the sale. Thanks to all who have supported the sale i n the past and hopefully there’s the potential to bring it back in the near future.

The Summer Gold Show this year will be held at Harding Fair again, along with Ag Ex being the Fall Gold Show in Brandon.

Manitoba to host the 2025 Canadian Angus National Convention and AGM

The site will be the Fort Garry Hotel in Winnipeg from June 11 -15. This Convention traditionally includes site seeing tours of the area as well as farm tours and hospitality evenings. The Canadian Junior Angus GOAL Conference was held from February 17-19th, 2024. Myself and 71 other Juniors travelled to Kelowna, BC for a weekend packed with activities, tours, speakers, personal development, networking, and of course so many memories. Manitoba Juniors in attendance included myself, Cora Baker, and Fischer Cavers.

The weekend began on the 17th at 1:30 with registration. Upon registration Canadian Juniors did something new this year. Essential items such as toothbrushes, mittens, school supplies, and non-perishable food items were donated by each junior and collected for the NOW Canada facility in Kelowna for women and children in need. CJA is dedicated to supporting youth in the Angus breed, and it was very exciting to see that support reach beyond the breed, out into the community we visited during GOAL. This is a great reminder of why our Angus Associations believe the future is in good hands!

Introductions followed registration and we got right into our first speaker, Amie Peck of the Canadian Cattle Association who shared some insight on the positive use of social media and “agvocacy” in today’s world. Something that resonated with me as a producer was to focus on starting conversations with the sector of the public considered “curious consumers”; who are those who enjoy eating beef and are curious to learn more about where the product they love comes from. This was followed by a money management presentation from John Olsen of FCC – main takeaways for young people: open a TFSA, use your credit card wisely, and consider making educated investments. To close out the day there were dance lessons in which we all got to put our two left feet to good use, a formal dinner, and the Foundation Legacy Scholarship panel discussion.

I participated in the panel discussion as a finalist for the Foundation Legacy Scholarship and can say it was a unique, challenging, and rewarding experience. I was fortunate enough to receive the first-place Legacy Scholarship and have no shortage of good things to say about the skills practiced and gained from the application process. I encourage all of you Juniors, or Juniors you know, to keep applying for Legacy on your radar and reach out to me with any curiosities about it. Each year there are $11,000 in scholarships available.

On the 18th our day began with a presentation about the BC Cattlemen’s Association from Kevin Boon. BC has some pretty neat programming at work currently including fencing grants, wolf pack control, and species-at-risk partnerships. We also talked a lot about wildfire and there is a lot of research being done regarding the positive impact cattle grazing can have on managing fuel load for fires and making their movement both more manageable and predictable Side note-if you haven’t already searched “Too Close to Home” on YouTube from Raising Canadian Beef and check out the 14-minute film about cattle as a wildfire mitigation strategy. continued on page 8 Lainie Muir Report

The rest of the day was packed with tours sightseeing throughout the Okanagan. We visited Village Cheese Company, KT Ranches in Cherryville and Farming Karma. Geoff at KT was very welcoming to all the Juniors, we were very appreciative to be able to wander around their very well-maintained facilities. It was interesting to see the landforms their cattle have to perform in.

Certainly a lot more elevation than here of course! The day closed with some time at a water park and a classic game of CJA Jeopardy. At this water park, there was a surfing simulator. It is safe to say it is a wonderful thing our Juniors have such a bright future in the beef industry, because the future for us, especially for me, is not so bright in the world of surfing.

On the 19th we got to learn more about Canadian Angus programming from our own Kajal Latimer and this was followed by a presentation from Cassie Marchand on opportunities in the beef industry. Cassie’s presentation was a personal highlight of the weekend for me as she was a perfect reminder of what strong women we have in the beef industry. This is not to take away from all of the admirable men in our industry of course, but at a point in my life where I am overwhelmed by all the things I want to accomplish or the possible things that I could do hearing her speak was just the thing I needed. Cassie is currently going through the Cattlemen’s Young Leader’s program, a mother of 3, a senior relationship manager at BMO as well as a manager at the multi-generational Clifton Ranch in BC. To everyone balancing their career, social life, personal development, and family responsibilities; which is exactly who would be receiving the Manitoba Outlook, just know you are an inspiration for young people such as myself who want to one day balance all of those things as well, just by being an active producer and persevering through time. The other side to sharing this is there is something impactful to be gained from every presentation at the GOAL Conference and everyone will take away something different. That takeaway may be just what you need, just like it was for me, to find what you are inspired to do next or clarification that you are making the right decisions for yourself already.

This year’s GOAL Conference attendance was tied for most ever and there was an unbelievable amount of financial assistance through the form of bursaries provided for the Juniors present. To everyone who does what they can to support the CJAA and Canadian Angus Foundation, thank you. Your contributions have a huge impact on so many Juniors on a national scale. I have now attended 3 GOAL conferences. Through them, I have developed my personal character, industry knowledge, and gained so many friendships. If you are someone who is able to attend GOAL, go for it. If you know someone who is eligible and interested in the industry, encourage them to go. Saskatchewan is next year’s host province! As of April 16, 2024, your Canadian Angus Association is taking responsibility for collecting and preparing DNA samples for genomic testing. After submitting your test requests, you can begin sending your properly collected and stored DNA samples (hair, TSU, blood cards, semen) to the office immediately.

In addition, members who live near or will travel to the Canadian Angus Association office area will be able to drop off their properly collected and stored DNA samples during regular business hours (7:30 a.m.–11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.–4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday).

From our office, Canadian Angus Association staff will prepare DNA samples for genomic testing, log them for tracking purposes, ship them to the lab for testing, and will receive and process the genomic test results.

Samples that are already in transit to the lab facility in Edmonton will be processed as usual; the samples will not be returned to you. Effective immediately, do not send samples to Neogen Canada in Edmonton; mail your DNA samples to the Canadian Angus Association office.

We look forward to working with our members to provide this enhanced customer service throughout the genomic testing process.

Foundation Legacy Scholarship | Deadline: January 5

Three awards totalling $10,000 will be presented to Canadian Junior Angus members recognizing overall academic achievement, leadership, community involvement, and industry knowledge. Awards in the amounts of $5,000, $3,000 and $2,000 will be presented.

Dick Turner Memorial Award | Deadline: May 15

The Dick Turner Memorial Award was established after the passing of legendary Angus icon Dick Turner. During his lifetime, Dick committed 55 years of his career to livestock publishing and successfully promoted and advertised the Angus breed specifically through the Canadian Aberdeen Angus News magazine. One $1,000 scholarship is presented annually.

Junior Angus Stockman of the Year Nominations due April 15

The Junior Angus Stockman of the Year award recognizes outstanding young cattlemen who are constantly growing their capacity by actively working with their Angus cattle, promoting their operation and cattle to the public, growing their knowledge of nutrition, genetics and breeding, and producing/selling quality Angus cattle. Five finalists will be selected from the nominations and will each receive $250. The winner will receive a $5,000 bursary to be used for genetics, cattle supplies/equipment, and/or training, along with travel assistance to attend Showdown.

Outstanding Young Angus Breeder Nominations due April 15

The Outstanding Young Angus Breeder award was developed to recognize an Angus breeder between the ages of 22 and 30 who has demonstrated a desire to stay involved in the Angus business based on their involvement within the breed up to this point in his/her career. The winner will receive $5,000.

Robert C. McHaffie Junior Ambassador Applications due April 30

The Junior Ambassador acts as a role model for youth and represents members of the Canadian Angus Association. It is an opportunity to network with leaders in the agriculture industry and learn from them. Five finalists are selected from the applications and they each receive a $1,000 scholarship and a finalist buckle as well as assistance to attend Convention where they will compete for the Ambassador title. Ambassadors have the opportunity to attend at least one international event and various major agricultural events in Canada.

Canadian Junior Angus Scholarships | Deadline: June 15

A total of three scholarships will be awarded in the amounts of $3,000, $2,000, and $1,500.

Brian Good Memorial Scholarship | Deadline: October 15

The Brian Good Memorial Scholarship was established after the passing of Brian Good, “Mr. Angus”. Brian was the commercial connection in the Angus industry for more than 20 years and believed strongly in supporting our youth. Two awards totalling $5,000 ($3,000 for first and $2,000 for second) will be presented to a post-secondary student recognizing overall livestock industry commitment, community involvement and leadership activities.

GOAL Travel Bursaries | Deadline: January 1

Bursaries of up to $750 will be awarded to 12 deserving CJA members from anywhere in Canada. Bursaries must be used within the same year awarded to help offset travel and registration costs for attending the GOAL Conference.

U.S. Exchange Program | Deadline: May 10

Canadian Junior Angus members have the opportunity to attend the Junior Red Angus Round-Up and the National Junior Angus LEAD Conference each summer, and in return members of the JRA and NJAA attend Showdown or GOAL.

Showdown Travel & Trucking Bursaries

Deadline: May 25 & June 1

Bursaries of up to $750 will be awarded to six deserving CJA members from anywhere in Canada. Bursaries must be used within the same year awarded to help offset travel costs for attending Showdown. Trucking assistance is also available for those who travel over 1,000 km one way.

Connecting Food and Farm Bursary

The Connecting Food and Farm Travel Bursary was developed to encourage urban or non-livestock youth to attend one of our events with a current member to learn about the industry. Examples of events may include but are not limited to GOAL Conference, the Canadian Angus National Convention or livestock shows.

Self-Directed National or International Travel Bursaries

The Self-Directed National or International Travel Bursaries were developed to assist young Angus breeders with financial travel assistance for conferences or events related to the beef cattle industry. For members aged 18–30.

Greetings friends in Manitoba!

This will be the last opportunity that I have to address you folks in Manitoba as your President of the Canadian Angus Association. I must say it has been an extreme pleasure for me to represent you at the national level. I really enjoyed my visit to Manitoba for the National Show in Brandon. The hospitality was overwhelming this year.

The Canadian Angus Association has brought on some new changes and I believe the changes are all for the positive. Your Board of Directors, your CEO and the office staff have done an exceptional job at putting our programs and services to work. I know that there are many exciting things coming down the pipe.

I also believe that this year the AGM in Toronto will be packed with exciting things, tours and programs being rolled out for the very first time. I think it ’s a must attend Convention. If you can, please make sure that you make your reservations early and get ready to enjoy some Ontario hospitality! Once again, I say I ’m truly humbled to have been your 88th President of the Canadian Angus Association and I hope that we have a chance to speak soon.
