Hello Juniors, Hope everyone is enjoying the great spring! The CJAA has been busy since last fall. I would just like to thank everyone who supported our calendar project last fall. We rely on this project to help fund our activities throughout the year. During Agribition we held our annual Dutch auction on our Scholarship Donation Heifer that was graciously donated by Clay Enterprises. The lucky winner of the heifer was Castlerock Marketing, Shane & Tammy Castle & Family, Herbert, SK. Thank you to everyone who supported the donation heifer auction. We held our 7th Annual Canadian Junior Angus GOAL Conference February 18-20 in Regina, SK. You can read a detailed report about the conference elsewhere in this newsletter. The GOAL conference is an excellent opportunity for the youth of our industry to take the steps needed to sustain the cattle industry. GOAL 2013 is going to be held in Edmonton, AB so be sure to consider attending. The CJAA has some important dates coming up for everyone to remember. The first deadline is for the Junior Ambassador program – April 30 – I can personally say that being the Ambassador is the experience of a lifetime! May 10 is the date to get in your application for our exchange programs with the American Junior Angus Associations. The Junior Red Angus Association hosts Round-up which is June 26 through July 1 in Florida this year. The LEAD conference organized by the National Junior Angus Association will be held in Fort Collins, Colorado August 2-5, 2012. These trips are a great opportunity for juniors to meet some new people, network with other Angus enthusiasts, learn about the American Junior Associations and travel for free! All you have to do is fill out the registration form and write

a short essay! May 15 is the date to apply for the new Dick Turner Memorial award and the next deadline to watch for is for CJAA scholarship applications which is June 15th. The CJAA gives out three, one thousand dollar scholarships each year. This is a great way to help pay for your education! More information and application forms for all of these opportunities are a part of this newsletter and also available on the Canadian Angus web-site under the Junior section. The next major CJAA event is Showdown 2012 which is being held July 19-21 in Lindsay, Ontario. I hope to see a lot of juniors out to the show! The early registration deadline is June 1st and the late deadline is June 20th. The Ontario Juniors have some great fun filled activities planned for the extravaganza which will be held jointly with the Shorthorn juniors who are attending their national show at the same time and place! I would like to thank retiring directors Emily Puch, Megan Kemp, Sean Enright and Laurie Noiseux for the time that they served on the CJAA board and wish them well in their future endeavours. I would also like to welcome the new board members that will be joining us at Showdown! They are Chad Lorenz, AB, Katie Wright, SK, Austen Anderson, MB, Michael Hargrave, ON and Blair Allnutt, QC. Provincial Reports ... British Columbia Happy spring everyone! Calving and bull sales are well underway here in BC. The bull sales have been very successful this year, and hopefully they continue to be in the time to come. The CJAA GOAL Conference was held in Regina this February, and once again it was a great success. I encourage any juniors in BC to attend, for it was an informative and very entertaining weekend. This summer Showdown will be held in Lindsay, Ontario, and it would be nice to see some BC Juniors make the trek across the country to attend. Finally, I encourage juniors to take advantage of other opportunities held by the CJAA, like scholarships, the summer jobs program, trips to the United States, and many others. Don’t hesitate to contact me about these opportunities. Well that’s all for now, and I am looking forward to seeing BC Juniors down the road at bull sales and some shows this summer! Allison Speller Alberta Greeting from Alberta! Hope everyone has had great winter months. Back in September, we sold our donation heifer at the Black Magic Sale. The heifer was from Remitall Farms Inc. and was bought for $2000. The money raised goes toward our scholarships and other junior activities. The AJAA board is very happy and excited that their show will once again this year be in Bashaw. It will be the 12-14 of August. The board hopes to see a bunch of new faces again this year as well as see the show grow in numbers. We have started a Facebook group. I have been able to meet so many Angus members from across North America as well as have some great times. I would encourage any junior in the future to take the opportunity and run for the CJAA directorship. I am sad to leave my position as I will miss being part of the junior board but look forward to staying involved with the Angus industry in the future. January started off in Manitoba with the MAA Annual meeting, where Naomi Best was elected as the junior ambassador to the board. Some juniors from Manitoba enjoyed the GOAL conference in February. To kick off the show season the Royal Manitoba Winter Fair will be held before you get to see this newsletter. An MJAA junior show will be in conjunction with the Manitoba Gold Show, watch for details. The summer will wrap up with the Manitoba Youth Beef Round Up, which is the most exciting and fun junior show within Mantioba! Visit the MYBR facebook page for more details. Finally I would like to say a final farewell to juniors across the prairies, and remember don’t be afraid to try new things, meet new people, and take opportunities presented to you. Megan Kemp Ontario Ontario is the place to be 2012! Hello again from Ontario! With 2012 well underway things couldn’t be more exciting here in Ontario. Without question the hot spot for 2012 is Ontario as we play host to both the National Junior Angus Show and the National Angus Show.

The Junior Beef Expo held in London, Ontario in March saw another great turnout of Angus juniors. Megan and Justin Foubert of Sunset Acres had both the Grand and Reserve Champion Angus. We are starting to see more and more new faces in the ring but also juniors from different breeds leading an Angus animal into the ring.

Provincial Reports ... Quebec Hi everyone, I am sad to write this last provincial report. I am very proud of these six years on the board and I want to thank you for all the support that you give me for this position. Don’t worry, I will not leave you without news - I will always be there for all of you if you need anything. Now, for what’s happening in Québec!!! First of all, we are working on the Junior Show that will be held with other breeds like: Simmental, Hereford and Shorthorn. This event will be on July 6th to 10th at the Brome fairgrounds. New Director Profiles ... Hello, My name is Blair Allnutt and I was recently elected to the CJAA board as the Quebec representative. I live in the small town of Brome, about an hour outside of Montreal. Along with the rest of my family, we raise both purebred Shorthorn and Angus. As the Vice President, I have been an active member of the QJAA since 2007. This has provided me with many great opportunities; such as attending Showdown and meeting fellow members who share the same passion and enthusiasm for the breed as I do. It is a tremendous honor to be part of such an elite breed, let alone be able to be part of the Canadian board of directors. I look forward to working along side my fellow directors, and meeting everyone at different shows and events! 



Hi, my name is Austen Anderson and I am from Swan River, MB where I operate Anderson Cattle Company with my parents Bruce and Ione and sister Breanna. Breanna th and I are the 5 generation of Andersons to farm in the Swan Valley. I am currently enrolled in the faculty of Education at the University of Regina. I have served as the Canadian Angus Foundation Junior Ambassador this past year, traveling to Argentina and across Canada to many cattle related events. My other interests include art, history, business, economics, current events and agriculture in the classroom.

Hello, my name is Katie Wright and I live on our family farm Wright Livestock, near Melfort, SK. My family and I currently run around 50 purebred Red Angus and about 50 purebred Black Angus cows, along with a small herd of commercials. I am currently in grade 12 at Kinistino High School where I am involved with senior volleyball, track and field, drama and SRC (student representitive council). I currently hold down a part time job as a lifeguard at the Northern Lights Palace in Melfort, SK. I also volunteer at the local care home in Kinistino.

My name is Michael Hargrave and I am 21 years old. My family has been breeding Black and Red Angus for over 30 years. We currently have 115 cows calving. I attend the University of Guelph for Criminal Justice and Public Policy currently in my second year. I hope to graduate and work in policy, particularly in the agriculture sector or possibly go on to law school and eventually work in that area. My job away from farming is working at a Kioti Tractor dealership as a Sales Associate. Outside of work I’m also an active referee for rugby as well as a coach for Under 14s at my local club. I am a member of the Meskanaw-Ethelton 4-H beef club and have been involved with         this club for 11 years. Canadian Junior Angus Association Scholarships Scholarship Conditions: 1) 2) 3) 4) 5) 6) 7) 8)

Applicants must be a Canadian Junior Angus Association member. Three scholarships will be awarded in the amount of $1000 each. The scholarship shall be used at a recognized post secondary or graduate educational institution. If applicant is under 17 years of age, the scholarship will be held in trust by the Canadian Junior Angus Association. Winners will be announced at the National Junior Show, Showdown. Unsuccessful applicants may re-apply in subsequent years if they meet the requirements. Junior membership fee of $10.50 (GST included) must be paid to the CJAA for the calendar year. You must be in your second semester of post secondary school to receive your scholarship money and you must provide your student ID number and a copy of your transcript. 9) Deadline for applications is June 15th. American Junior Angus Association LEAD Conference 2012 The CJAA and the American Junior Angus Association are working together to have an ‘exchange’ between junior members and our leadership conferences. There is an opportunity for junior members to attend the AJAA’s LEAD Conference that will take place August 2 - 5, 2012 in Fort Collins, CO. In return, members of the AJAA have an opportunity to attend our Conference in February. Requirements for application and consideration for selection as one of the CJAA representative to the states are: a. Must be a current CJAA member b. Must be at least 18 years old or travels with a parent c. Must be able to attend the whole event d. GOAL Report ... The seventh Canadian Junior Angus Guiding Outstanding Angus Leaders (GOAL) Conference was held February 18-20th in Regina, Saskatchewan at the Ramada Hotel. Thirty six junior members from across Canada, and also four members from the United States, attended this informative conference. The conference is aimed at producing Angus leaders for the future. This year’s conference was themed as “Winning at the Game”. Two Saskatchewan Roughriders joined us as our first speakers on Saturday and gave very inspirational and motivational speeches. The two Riders, Stu Foord and Neal Hughes, both local Regina ‘boys’ had the message that going for your dreams and working hard can get you anywhere. Stu had just been traded that week to the BC Lions and he was very emotional about leaving Regina. They were enjoyed by all. That evening the Canadian Angus board of directors joined us for a delicious four course meal and a presentation from Heather Salloum from the Lieutenant Governors office on ‘Protocol Matters’. She helped participants deal with the array of glassware and utensils that were a part of the dinner, as well as provided tips on greeting people and proper etiquette in formal social situations. The conference embraced many people who are influences within the Angus Industry, but also the cattle industry as a whole. Other speakers included Canadian Angus Association CEO Rob Smith, Junior Ambassador Austen Anderson, General Manager Michael Latimer, and Breed Development Specialist Kajal Devani. Kim McLean from the Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture and Lee Sinclair of Merial Canada were also presenters at the hotel. All of these speakers were informative but also interesting. This conference enabled junior members to learn about programs which the CAA have set up for the Junior members and Lee and Kim discussed on the importance of genetic testing and EPD’s. The presentations all benefitted the juniors who attended the conference. An exciting part of the conference was being able to tour Optimum Genetics Ltd. outside of Regina on Sunday afternoon. works with producers by drawing semen, implanting embryos and doing genetic work. The tour was a great experience for all the juniors who were involved. As well as getting to learn about Optimum Genetics Ltd., juniors were introduced to ultrasound and got to see an ultrasound demonstration by Rod Wendorf as well as try their hand at scanning an animal. So Erin and Stacey will try to convince the thousands of 4-H members who show and sell steers to give the heifer project a try. When they do that, not only does the 4-H program gain and we facilitate more interest and training in cow/calf production, but you know we will benefit by the sales of sexy little heifer calves because, since more than 50% of all registered cattle in Canada are Angus, and approximately two-thirds of the national cow herd is Angus or Angus influence, chances are they WILL purchase an Angus heifer! So please join me in wishing Stacey and Erin all the success in the world because their success will most certainly spell good fortune for all of us. Please come to the National CAA Convention in June, hosted by the Alberta Angus Association in the beautiful, friendly southern city of Lethbridge. We are trying to make the Convention more of a ‘must-attend’ event, so please come and learn, network and celebrate the success of this past year for all things Canadian Angus. And if you can’t come because of school or work, please tell your parents to come! We want to have a good time with as many as possible and everyone has something to add and benefit others. I look forward to the later spring and summer because this is when we see our outstanding Angus youth promoting and representing. I wish each of you all the best with your 4-H and Junior projects. The Canadian Junior Angus Association will be publishing a 2013 â&#x20AC;&#x153;Fund-Raisingâ&#x20AC;? calendar. All Juniors are encouraged to get involved with the promotion and sale of this fund-raising project.

Four business card type ads will be available on each of the month pages for $150, and will include 1 date space. Individual dates will be $50. This will be a thirteen month calendar spanning from December 2012 to December 2013 and will be circulated to all Canadian Angus Association members in the fall of 2012.
