NEW THIS YEAR - VIDEO SALE!!
At the Farm - Standard, AB
Welcome to our 20th ANNuAl sAle!! Welcome to our 32nd year in the Angus seed stock business. Thank you for your interest in our product. The cattle business has been a way of life for us as it is for most of you. It is very encouraging to see increasing demand for beef. On the global scene the earth’s population is consuming more meat than ever before. In China alone meat consumption has been rising an average of 2 kg per capita per year over the last decade while over 5 million people per year move from lower to middle class. There are many other countries in the developing world experiencing the same thing. What I am trying to say is that, there is a tremendous demand for a product that has limited expansion of supply. Being a primary producer of beef is just an excellent position to be in for the forseeable future. We believe that Crowfoot genetics will help cattlemen maximize profit through balanced traits that suit our environment. We enjoy and look forward to serving the needs of our customers and the relationships that we develop and maintain. Please call anytime to discuss the sale offering or just to chew the fat. Or stop by anytime, the coffee is always on. Feeding Program at CrowFoot 400 cow/calf pairs and over 100 heifers go to grass every year for 7 to 8 months. We like the duration of our winter feeding period to be as short as possible; under 4 months would be ideal but often it is close to 5 months. Our neighbour owns a grass seed farm, so there is a good supply of combined grass straw available of which we make the most! Our cows are only fed a silage grass straw mixed ration after they calve. Prior to calving we roll out bales on the ground. Since feed is the largest expense in any operation, the more efficient an animal is at converting low quality inexpensive feed then the more profit there is. Crowfoot’s easy fleshing genetics excel under these conditions and when the culls are sold they still bring top $$ because they are not skinny. The two year old bulls in the sale have never had concentrate in their lives. Mostly they have had just grass and hay but for a short period prior to the sale they are on mixed silage and chopped hay. The yearling bulls are brought into the feedlot in early November and fed free choice hay until we get around to getting the feed truck running which is usually mid December then they are fed a mixed ration of chopped hay, silage, and 7 lb/head/day of a bull grower concentrate that consists of corn, oats, barley, screening pellets, and mineral. Around the first of Feb we take the free choice hay away and they are fed the mixed ration once a day. This ration results in an average daily gain of approximately 2.5 lbs per day from November to sale day. That rate of gain translates into about 1060 lb yearling wt. If you want to have a 1300 lb yearling wt you need to go somewhere where the bulls are fed to gain 4 lb. per day over a longer period of time. Usually those bulls cost more money and do not last as long. We feel our feeding program suits the bulls’ longevity, their general overall well being, and our budget all at the same time. Check out the bulls on our website or just stop by anytime to view the cattle. Dallas, Chris, Johnny and Matt This is the day which the Lord has made; Let us rejoice and be glad in it. Psalm 118:24
