Manitoba Angus Association - Purebred Breeder of the Year For 2023 “The Van Daele Award” To be named Manitoba Purebred Breeder of the year for 2023 is a great honour and privilege and we were very surprised by the nomination. We would like to thank Dallas Johnston for the nomination. Cody bought his first purebred heifer in 2013 from the Keystone Klassic from Section 7 Ranch, this was the start of the NCC prefix. From this, it has slowly grown every year with the addition of heifers purchased from some of the top producing Angus herds. In 2020, we purchased 5 cows and 2 heifers from the Stewart Cattle Company dispersal. Cody saw this as an opportunity to increase the purebred herd from a very reputable herd. Right now, the purebred herd sits at 25 cows calving in 2024. Nolan Cattle Company currently sells bulls at the Manitoba Bull Test Station and is a guest consignor to the Buy The Beef bull sale in Neepawa with JAS Red Angus, CAMO Cattle Conpany and Madsen Angus. We would like to thank these producers for letting us be apart of this very prestigious sale. We also sell females in the Keystone Klassic sale yearly. This is where Cody purchased many animals and is honoured to be a part of this sale. In 2020 Cody became the manager of the Manitoba Bull Test Station. He was the manager there for 3 years. During his tenure there, he got to truly see Angus genetics perform and compare them to the other breeds involved on test. It was a great opportunity to see different AI sired calves and compare them and learn from it. In 2023, Nolan Cattle Company made the move to Cypress River. They formed a company with their good friends Cam and Taryn Claeys and operate 400 commercial cows under Spruce View Cattle Company. It is an Angus and Charolais based here. They are two breeds that bring different qualities to the table and when crossed make good females and steers that push the scale down in the fall. We will still operate the purebred herd under Nolan Cattle Company. Cody has shown Angus cattle since his 4-H years and currently shows the Angus cattle in Brandon, Regina and the local summer fairs. His love for showing Angus cattle involves his wife Kendra and daughter Ellie. Ellie is an active 4-H member and Manitoba Junior Angus member, who loves showing Angus cattle. Cody has been an active director of the Manitoba Angus Association board for a few years and enjoys being a director and moving the Angus breed forward in Manitoba. Cody, Kendra, Ellie and the two new additions coming in April look forward to keep doing what they love and meeting new and experienced Angus breeders. Thank you to everyone that has encouraged and mentored us through the years and we look forward to making new friends down the road.

Highlights of the Manitoba Angus Association AGM This year the Annual General Meeting was held at Section 6 Brewery in Brandon on December 17th, with lots of discussion amongst members and appetizers to follow. Some of the highlights were: -123 Angus tokens handed out to 4-H kids across the province

-A successful Summer Gold Show at Harding, MB this year with a great turn out of cattle including yearling heifers on the Junior and Open side -A successful National Fall Gold Show at Ag Ex with the spirits of exhibitors high -Hosting the 35th annual Keystone Klassic Sale held in conjunction with the Keystone Simmental Association with sale management Bohrson marketing. Nominations for open board positions took place. Here are the names of the 2024 Manitoba Angus Association’s Board of Directors:

Purebred Breeder of the year is Nolan Cattle Co. – The Nolan family of Cypress River, MB - are the 2023 VanDaele Award winners.

The 2023 Honorary President is Bill Walker of Black Meadows Angus, Miniota, MB. The 2023 Jack Hart Memorial Foundation Female Award was announced. Congratulations to Alice Rooke, Alexander, MB. She received $2500 toward the purchase of a heifer at the Keystone Klassic sale. The 2022 Commercial Producer of the Year Award was announced. Congratulations to Kurt Lane & Family of Lane Valley Farms, Birtle, MB It was announced that there would be a slight increase in fees for advertising in the Outlook starting in 2024, due to costs of paper and postage increasing. The Keystone Klassic Sale was discussed. The board will be considering options to try and better the sale for 2024. The board will be looking into producing a new Herd Directory. More details are to come once the board meets to discuss what it will look like. The Association is also looking forward to being able to host another pasture tour. If any member or group of members is interested please let a board member know.

Introducing new Directors! Austin Richards I have a small herd of Black Angus cattle in the Miami area. I got into Angus as they are a very versatile and resilient breed of cattle that thrive in our harsh Manitoba winters. As a new member of the board, my goal is to help provide the best service to our members, get involved with MAA events, and help to further promote the Angus breed.

Glen Humphreys I farm a small herd at Souris, Mb. I’ve been in Angus cattle for a number of years, since being a Junior Angus member. I’m looking forward to being a MAA director, meeting new people, and helping promote our breed.

Thank you to our outgoing Directors! The Board would like to thank Dylan Funk and Lacey Brown (Dekeyser) for their time on the board. Lacey was on the board for 1 year and Dylan served on the board for the past nine years. During this time he witnessed many changes both within the MAA board as well as many changes at the Canadian Association level, but the Goals have remained the same. “To promote the great breed of Angus Cattle.”

Happy New Year!! We wish everyone all the best in 2024. As we look toward the future, we hope for the strong cattle markets to continue, a healthy calf crop and good demand for seed stock in both bulls and females. Anyone with Angus cattle knows that their strong attributes should sell themselves, but in these times, good marketing is a huge part of the business. We wish to thank all of the Angus breeders who have advertised in the MB Angus Outlook, over the past 19 years that we have been publishing it, and have helped to make it the magazine it is today! Your ongoing support is appreciated. This past year saw a great turnout at the Summer Angus Tour and the Canadian National Angus Show at Ag Ex. There were a large number of high quality cattle on display and a good crowd to watch the judge sort through the cattle and select his Champion. The Grand Champion are featured on the front page and results are listed through out this issue as well as Junior Show results. The Keystone Klassic Sale results are listed as well. As you receive this issue, many will be into calving, while assessing your calf crop and bloodlines used in the past, you will also be making your plans for spring breeding and what traits you want to change or strengthen. This is a good time to check out the breeding programs offering bulls listed in this issue. 2024 starts with a booth at Ag Days in January and the Bull Congress, followed by the MB Cattle Producers AGM in early February. Later February will be the first event of the year for the Junior Angus members at the GOAL Conference in Kelowna. We hope to have a report from that event in the next issue. Then comes another Junior event. The RMWF heifer show at the end of March. The Junior Angus members have many great opportunities to take part in and many are highlighted throughout this issue so you can make plans to participate. The CAA Annual Convention will be hosted by the Ontario Angus Association and will be held in Toronto in June. Plan early to attend this fun and educational event! It is a great place to meet with other Angus breeders from across the country to compare challenges and solutions which can very greatly across this vast country of ours. As you read through this issue, we hope you enjoy a variety of articles about what is happening in the Manitoba Angus Association as well as the cattle industry in general. MANITOBA ANGUS ASSOCIATION PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Happy New Year! When heading into 2024 if it was by far the best winter we’ve experienced in Manitoba for quite some time. But as I write this, the MB winter has finally reared it’s ugly head just as many producers are getting full swing into calving. I hope calving is going well for everyone otherwise, as it’s no doubt the most thrilling, but at the same time the most demanding and exhausting time of the year for any cattleman, especially when calving in the conditions we’ve experienced in January thus far. As I reflect on 2023, for MB Angus I believe last year was a pivotal year for the Association and the board. We really tried to freshen things up and make some strides as an Association. It may not look like it to many outside the board but we really are trying to challenge some old ideas and ways of doing things and find new concepts to help bring the Angus breed forward in the Province. I really look forward to what the future holds as we have a lot to discuss going into 2024 and I predict some exciting things happening as the year unfolds. I would like to thank Dylan Funk and Lacey Brown for the time and effort they dedicated to the board. Your input has been much appreciated and I would like to welcome Austin Richards and Glen Humphreys to the board for 2024, we look forward to working with you both. I am pleased to announce that Nolan Cattle Company is your 2023 Purebred Breeder of the year and Lane Valley Farms is the 2023 Commercial Producer of the year. Canadian Angus President Tom DeWaal Greetings friends in Manitoba! It’s indeed a pleasure to be once again asked to address you. As most of you were aware, I had the pleasure of visiting Manitoba in October to witness the National Angus Show in Brandon. I had a blast visiting lots of friends that I hadn’t seen for quite some time. I think you should all be commended with the outstanding job that the Manitoba Angus Association did putting the show together, from your organizing committee and all the volunteers that got together to make the show an outstanding success. I had the opportunity to visit several farms and ranches along the way and got to enjoy a lot of the prairie hospitality. As well, I saw a lot of outstanding livestock and got to swap a lot of stories with friends in Manitoba and Saskatchewan. It was a trip that I won’t forget. Things with your board of directors and at your Angus office are going along quite smoothly. Lots of new programs have been introduced or are in the process of being rolled out for everyone to take a look at very soon. There are some exciting things coming down the pike, but like anything, we want to make sure that any program that is rolled out to our members, they have the opportunity to use or not use, and it will be their choice, whether or not it works for their program. We feel that is something that’s very important, as not everybody needs all the things on the buffet at Canadian Angus. You can pick and choose the items that work best for you and apply them to your program. Going forward, the AGM is going to be in Ontario this year and I know that the Ontario Angus Association has some wonderful things lined up in June for the AGM and if you have an opportunity to be able to travel there, I’m sure you’d be in for a treat. There will be lots of things to do and lots of things to see. Right now in British Columbia, we are calving cows, like most of you probably are going to start. We’re in the middle of an unbelievable cold spell now and it’s all we can do to keep animals going. I hope that your calving season is a successful one, and may you have great weather to go along with it. Thank you for all the hospitality and kindness that you have shown me on my trip to Manitoba, and I look forward to seeing and visiting with more of you in the near future. Tom

Lainie is currently attending the University of Saskatchewan taking a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture (Soil Science).She is currently the Manitoba Director on the Canadian Junior Angus Association. In August, Lainie attended the American Angus Association LEAD conference in Modesto, California on behalf of the Canadian Angus Juniors. Emily Speers of Alexander, MB was one of recipients of Manitoba Youth Beef Round-up Scholarship. Emily is currently attending Assiniboine Community College taking a diploma in Agribusiness. Emily likes to work with youth and help them with clipping and grooming. Allie Lavich of Carberry, MB was one of recipients of Manitoba Youth Beef Round-Up Scholarship. Allie is currently attending Assiniboine Community College taking a diploma in Agribusiness. Alice Rooke from Alexander, MB receives Jack Hart Memorial Award (To receive the Jack Hart Memorial Award, which is a cheque from the MB Angus Assoc. for $2500.00 to be used towards the purchase of an Angus female at the Keystone Klassic Sale, each applicant must first submit an essay to the committee, followed by an interview with committee members. This year there were 6 applicants! This is the essay submitted by Alice Rooke!) The Angus breed is world renowned for more than just a juicy steak! While the breed is recognized by the public as a high grading red meat, it’s known by producers for superior breed traits, high marketability and versatility as a genetic tool. At least these are the reasons I select Angus as my preferred breed. My family operation markets purebred seed stock and we see over time that customers come back to us for the same reason—easy calving, calf vigor at birth and an easy doing progeny off pasture. These traits are known to the Angus breed, along with easy keeping and highly maternal females. The recognition of the breed and these traits makes the cattle naturally highly marketable through the sale ring and off the yard as breeding bulls. Red Angus also brings interest to the red coat commercial breeders such as Charolais, Simmental and Shorthorn producers. This makes Angus a highly versatile breed for the commercial producer! My involvement in the industry includes my six years in the 4-H beef program at Rivers as well as taking cattle to various Provincial shows and Ag Ex. I was also on the Manitoba Angus Association Board as the Junior Director 2018 - 2020. I volunteer with “Ag. In The Classroom” to deliver agricultural education to classrooms and I often spend most of my time talking about cattle during my presentations! I have highly enjoyed my time being involved with the board and hope to be involved again in the future as I continue my journey in the purebred industry. I have currently graduated from the U of M with a Bachelors Degree in Agribusiness and minor degree in Agronomy. I’m practicing private agronomy with J & A Ag Solutions while managing our cattle program alongside my Mom. My goals with our cattle program are to continue to progress our female herd with the goal of producing a bull crop that can service the commercial producer to create beef. This includes using genetic selection and introducing new females and sire power to my herd each year. I would like to see our commercial cow program consist of purebred females that we outcross to Simmental bull power so that Angus traits can go to work with hybrid vigour. Meanwhile I intend to continue developing my Agronomy business to incorporate forage agronomy that can focus on finding ways we can efficiently grow more high-quality feed on fewer acres. This becomes more and more important as we continue to fight for the marginal land to remain as pasture. My main mentor in the cattle industry is hands down my Mom. She has always been a strong female role model in my life. Growing up, Mom always headed up our livestock department whether it’s sheep or cattle and not just from a distance. She manages all the physical labour and organizes all the vet and med programs. Our cattle operation is totally girl power! I am grateful that she has allowed me to work beside her instead of under her as I have transitioned into taking on more management of our operation. One thing she taught me very early on is to “always work backwards”. I use this saying in a lot of areas of my life, but literally any time I handle livestock. Especially when I have people helping me. Let’s start where we want to end up! What is the end goal? What tools do we need to achieve that goal? And Where do we start? Whether this applies to running cattle through the chute and making sure we have all the right vaccines, to simply moving pairs through the yard and making sure the gates are set in the right way. All the way to my day to day life of what do I want or need, to accomplish today and what’s the best way to do that. I intend to keep using this mantra as I work toward my life goals.

Commercial Producer of the Year for 2023 Awarded to Lane Valley Farms Ltd. Birtle, MB We are very honoured to receive this award. Our farm is located east of Birtle along the Birdtail Valley. David & Gail began the farm as a mixed grain and cow-calf operation in the early 70s. During these early years David was also employed at the potash mine in Rocanville. With the expansion of the PMU industry in the mid-80s David received a contract, and so the cows were sold to purchase mares. PMU cutbacks began in the early 90s, and David, truly missing the cattle, decided it was a good time to get back into the cattle industry. His first choice was Black Angus. The herd grew to 60-70 black cows alongside the PMU business. David's PMU contract was cut in 2004 with the huge collapse of the PMU industry. Together with his son Kurt, David decided to expand the Angus herd. Today the operation is a mixed cattle/grain operation run by David and Gail, and Kurt and his wife Kristin. The herd has grown, calving approximately 450 head each spring. All calves are backgrounded until the beginning of March and then sold either off the farm to an order buyer, or through the auction ring at Heartland in Virden. We run primarily Black Angus bulls with the exception of a few Hereford. Daughter Natalie joined the Foxwarren-Solsgirth Beef 4-H Club in 2022, showing Angus calves. The land base has expanded to 2300 acres of crop and hay, with an additional 3000 acres of pastureland, owned and rented. We choose to breed Angus for their low input, uniformity, and moderate frame.

Honorary President for 2023 is Bill Walker of Black Meadows Angus Bill was an active Angus member, serving as a board member on NW Bull Test Station at Roblin, Breed Rep at Douglas Bull Test Station and on the MAA board as a director. He was on the board when the Keystone Klassic Sale was established. Black Meadows Angus has been recognized for many achievements over the years at both test Stations and in the Show ring. They have marketed their cattle through private, test station and consignment sales to commercial and purebred herds in Canada, the US, Mexico, Australia, Japan and Czechoslovakia. July 17-22, 1985 the Fifth World Angus Forum was held in Edmonton, Alberta. Angus enthusiasts from 10 countries and a cattle show of 299 head of Angus cattle were on display. Manitoba Breeders participated in the event and ended up 2nd overall in the Provincial Group. Photo above. Keystone Klassic Sale Report 2023 The Keystone Klassic Sale was held on Dec 5th at the Keystone Centre in Brandon, with Bohrson Marketing Services managing the sale. The sale was also held in conjunction with the Keystone Konnection Simmental sale. There was a lunch provided prior to the sale and a bar as well.

There were some top quality animals on offer! On 33 lots the sale average was $5205. The High selling Black females were: Legaarden Jestress 3L consigned by Legaarden Livestock. Sold for $15,500. She was purchased by Nolan Cattle Co., Madsen Angus and Camo Cattle Co.

Awards in the amounts of $5,000, $3,000 and $2,000 will be presented.

Dick Turner Memorial Award | Deadline: May 15 The Dick Turner Memorial Award was established after the passing of legendary Angus icon Dick Turner. During his lifetime, Dick committed 55 years of his career to livestock publishing and successfully promoted and advertised the Angus breed specifically through the Canadian Aberdeen Angus News magazine. One $1,000 scholarship is presented annually.

Junior Angus Stockman of the Year Nominations due April 15 The Junior Angus Stockman of the Year award recognizes outstanding young cattlemen who are constantly growing their capacity by actively working with their Angus cattle, promoting their operation and cattle to the public, growing their knowledge of nutrition, genetics and breeding, and producing/selling quality Angus cattle. Five finalists will be selected from the nominations and will each receive $250. The winner will receive a $5,000 bursary to be used for genetics, cattle supplies/equipment, and/or training, along with travel assistance to attend Showdown. Outstanding Young Angus Breeder Nominations due April 15 The Outstanding Young Angus Breeder award was developed to recognize an Angus breeder between the ages of 22 and 30 who has demonstrated a desire to stay involved in the Angus business based on their involvement within the breed up to this point in his/her career. The winner will receive $5,000. Robert C. McHaffie Junior Ambassador Applications due April 30 The Junior Ambassador acts as a role model for youth and represents members of the Canadian Angus Association. It is an opportunity to network with leaders in the agriculture industry and learn from them. Five finalists are selected from the applications and they each receive a $1,000 scholarship and a finalist buckle as well as assistance to attend Convention where they will compete for the Ambassador title. Ambassadors have the opportunity to attend at least one international event and various major agricultural events in Canada.

Canadian Junior Angus Scholarships | Deadline: June 15 A total of three scholarships will be awarded in the amounts of $3,000, $2,000, and $1,500.

Brian Good Memorial Scholarship | Deadline: October 15 The Brian Good Memorial Scholarship was established after the passing of Brian Good, “Mr. Angus”. Brian was the commercial connection in the Angus industry for more than 20 years and believed strongly in supporting our youth. Two awards totalling $5,000 ($3,000 for first and $2,000 for second) will be presented to a post-secondary student recognizing overall livestock industry commitment, community involvement and leadership activities.

GOAL Travel Bursaries | Deadline: January 1 Bursaries of up to $750 will be awarded to 12 deserving CJA members from anywhere in Canada. Bursaries must be used within the same year awarded to help offset travel and registration costs for attending the GOAL Conference. U.S. Exchange Program | Deadline: May 10 Canadian Junior Angus members have the opportunity to attend the Junior Red Angus Round-Up and the National Junior Angus LEAD Conference each summer, and in return members of the JRA and NJAA attend Showdown or GOAL. Showdown Travel & Trucking Bursaries Deadline: May 25 & June 1 Bursaries of up to $750 will be awarded to six deserving CJA members from anywhere in Canada. Bursaries must be used within the same year awarded to help offset travel costs for attending Showdown. Trucking assistance is also available for those who travel over 1,000 km one way. Connecting Food and Farm Bursary The Connecting Food and Farm Travel Bursary was developed to encourage urban or non-livestock youth to attend one of our events with a current member to learn about the industry. Examples of events may include but are not limited to GOAL Conference, the Canadian Angus National Convention or livestock shows. Self-Directed National or International Travel Bursaries The Self-Directed National or International Travel Bursaries were developed to assist young Angus breeders with financial travel assistance for conferences or events related to the beef cattle industry. LEAD CONFERENCE 2023 by Laine Muir

Over the 2023 August long weekend, I had the incredible opportunity to attend the National Junior Angus Association LEAD Conference. Myself, Kylie Wilms and Reegan Frey of Saskatchewan, as well as Keely Adams and Carmen White of Alberta, traveled to Modesto, California for 4 jam-packed days of learning, networking, and experiencing Californian Agriculture. There were over 130 juniors in attendance from 3 provinces and 28 states. We began the weekend with a warm welcome from NJAA board members at the Sacramento airport and then traveled to Modesto. After registration, we were organized into “herds” within which we took part in many icebreakers. There were individuals in my herd from 6 different states, it was a great start to networking! The keynote speaker on Thursday was Fernando Sam Sin, a professional rodeo photographer, who shared insights on the power of dedication in reaching your goals. Thursday ended with a fabulous roast beef dinner and an evening of entertainment with hypnotist Dr. Dave Hill. I was one of the lucky individuals selected to be hypnotized and to say the least, my fellow Canadians got some priceless footage of me in my ‘alternate’ state of mind. Friday morning, our 3 buses departed from the hotel. The first stop for my bus was E & J Gallo Winery, a family-oriented company and global leader in wine production. Gallo began in 1933 and now manufactures over 130 brands. We toured headquarters, the underground cellar, the warehouse, as well as around their above-ground storage tanks, and glass plant that produces 2.5 million bottles a day. Gallo is home to a 45-acre warehouse, 8500 employees, and 500 above-ground tanks with the largest holding 1 million gallons of wine. Their underground cellar sat 40ft below the surface with 622 casks that each hold 4000 gallons or 20000 bottles of wine. Gallo ships out 45 rail cars and 120 trucks of product every day. Our second stop was Fiscalini Farmstead, a cheese producer and a dairy home to 1500 head. Fiscalini is a generational business established in 1914. We sampled multiple kinds of cheese, my favorites were the Lionza, Purple Moon, and Craft Beer flavors. We viewed their facility, feed, and cattle. The quality and care of their livestock was exceptional. An aspect of their operation I admired was their focus on giving back to the community and future generations, put to action through the construction of a methane digester. Their digester produces enough electricity to power their facility and 300 neighboring homes. The third stop of the day was Duarte Nursery, the largest permanent crops nursery in the United States located in the Central Valley of California in Modesto. Some of their most notable products include wine grapes, walnuts, almonds, and pistachios. For perspective on their size, Duarte grafted 8,000,000 grapes planted across 13.3 thousand acres in 2023. Our groups had the opportunity to learn about their dedication to customer service and explore their innovations in disease control and hydroponics. Our final stop on Friday was Vintage Angus Ranch where we were hosted by the Coleman Family. We took part in learning labs of IVF, AI, ultrasound sexing, hot branding, tips for the picturing pen, and viewing of sale cattle. In the evening we spent our time networking and playing flag football, volleyball, and cornhole. We returned back to the hotel after dark and had a short sleep before our 4:45 AM departure for Yosemite National Park on Saturday. Upon arrival, we were paired with our tour guide, Chad, and got to experience Half Dome, El Capitan, Yosemite Falls, Bridalveil Falls, Glacier Point, Wawona, and the Cathedral Spires. It was a truenatural wonder! Next up in the schedule was traveling to Minturn Nut Co. in Le Grand, fitting as approximately 80% of the world’s almonds are produced in California. (Side note, most Californians call almonds, “amonds” and the running joke is this is because you shake the “L” out of them to harvest the nut.) However, the other 2 buses made it there just fine, but my bus did not. My bus ended up getting stuck on the side of the road near Mariposa and this led to my group being taken in by an admirable California resident, Harold. Harold welcomed all 40 of us into the shade of his yard, where delicious homemade ice cream and many stories were shared. We got a tour of his neighbour’s exotic birds, including African Crested Cranes, and his Harold’s beautiful home. Some of the other girls and I got to work with Harold in his immaculate garden, harvesting and sampling fresh blackberries, grapes, okra, corn, watermelon, and beans. It’s safe to say this afternoon was my trip highlight and showcases the positive impact one individual can have. Thank you for your kindness, Harold!Once our bus was back on the road we departed to our last stop of the day in Schnoor Park, where we had state photos and got to participate in a question panel with the Schnoor sisters Amanda, Kirbe, and Sydney. The 3 sisters spoke on their experience growing up as part of the NJAA, sharing some tips for success as your graduate out of junior programs. The night concluded with some of the tastiest tacos I have ever had, more cornhole, and lots of line dancing. Sunday morning, our final morning, we had breakfast and concluded the weekend with director speeches, a devotional, and an educational skit. We reflected on all we learned over the weekend, said our goodbyes, and traveled back to the airport. I met a multitude of strong individuals in the industry. I greatly enjoyed getting to share insight into the Canadian Angus industry, as well as Canadian agriculture as a whole with the Americans. It was so interesting to compare and contrast the industry in our two countries from genetics to grazing practices, feed programs, and anything in between. LEAD Conference was a weekend that solidified the importance of what can be gained from diversifying your connections and involvement in agriculture. I gained a volume of knowledge on the diversity of Californian agriculture and a great respect for those who work in partnership with the land across the state. 2024 will see the CAA starting some new programs and expanding on others started in 2023. Keep an eye on the website and the online Angus Advisor to keep up to date on Association programs.

Attendance at the fall shows and sales was very good. There is no doubt that the above-normal temperatures and lack of snow made it easier for many to get away from the ranch for a few days. As I sit to write this message, winter has definitely arrived with the temperature plunging and finally snow on the ground after a brown Christmas. This weather change will make for some long days and nights for producers calving and getting cattle ready for pictures for sale catalogues. Here's to hoping things go well and the weather doesn't get too severe.

The bull, production and consignment sales finished out the year strong. I don't know the exact values, but I'm sure that records were approached or broken in some segments (flushes, embryos, live cattle, etc.). Some producers I've talked to have cut back or are not trying to increase the number of bulls they are going to sell this spring, due to the decline in the national cow herd as well as them seeing some of their customers getting out of the cattle business. Hopefully the strength of the fall sales will carry through into the spring bull sale run.

You could say that 2023 closed out on a high note. Commercial bred heifers and young cows brought very good prices for the most part. This was due in part to the strength of the cull market and many producers getting rid of older cows or any females that were on the fence for production or other factors and replacing them with younger females. Although the national cow herd is still in a decline it is showing promise of a future with some optimism still out there in the commercial sector.

Website: cranberrycreekangus.ca Crockpot Tortellini Sausage Soup - Recipe from Michelle Rimke - 16 ounces Italian sausage - 2 medium carrots sliced or chopped - 4 cloves garlic minced - 1 (14 fluid ounce) can diced tomatoes with juices - 2 (9 ounce) packages refrigerated cheese tortellini - 2 cups (packed) fresh baby spinach

- 1/2 medium onion chopped - 2 sticks celery chopped finely - 1 (28 fluid ounce) can crushed tomatoes - 4 cups chicken broth - 3/4 cup heavy/whipping cream - Salt & pepper to taste

Instructions 1. Add the sausage meat and chopped onion to a skillet. Sauté for about 7 minutes. Add the garlic in towards the end so it doesn't burn. Spoon out most of the fat (you don't need to be precise... fat gives the soup more flavor). Add the sausage mixture to your Crockpot. 2. Meanwhile, chop your carrots and celery. Add all ingredients except for the tortellini, spinach, cream, and salt & pepper to the Crockpot. Keep in mind that if you want the soup to cook in 3-4 hours, the carrots will have to be chopped pretty finely. If you're cooking it for 7-8 on low or 4-5 hours on high, you can chop them larger. 3. About 30 minutes prior to serving, add in your cheese tortellini, cream, and spinach (I set the heat to "high"). Give it a stir occasionally. Season with salt & pepper as needed prior to serving.

Thank you to the Canadian Angus Foundation for supporting this trip, the amount I have learned from pursuing Junior travel opportunities is indescribable. Juniors! Don’t hesitate to contact me if you would like to learn more about my trip, or are interested in pursuing a Canadian Junior Angus self-directed or U.S. exchange trip. It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. I am so glad I got to share it with fellow Angus enthusiasts across North America. There is great value in the connections we made between our Junior organizations and I look forward to staying connected with everyone I met, as we move forward in our involvement in the industry. I am always thankful for my Angus family which continues to grow!
