Again, our seven Islands are the main subject of our report. All of them are represented, we explain many of the symbols of identity in a text written with all the love we have for the Canary Islands. Then, our

Also, On the Way… we travel to Fuerteventura to visit its windmills and With Kids we will enjoy one of the most characteristic places of Lanzarote, traveling to the center of the earth. Last but not least, an Italian who makes cigars in La Palma has a leading role in the magazine, isn’t that interesting? And in Cana-

In his legacy we find masterpieces such as Shadowlands (1993) and Oh! What a Lovely War, where he made his debut as a director in 1969. Know, reward, choose and cancel Who said that summer is dull? I do. I said it and I reaffirm it. Since we began this adventure one year ago, never has it been quite so difficult to find any notable news between the reports of ‘Look how successful we have been’ and promises of ‘Look at what we are going to bring to you’. We hope that those promises don’t end up turning into more cancellations. But that’s another question. Here is the most important news (from my view) regarding cultural events in the Canary Islands in July and August. Maybe the problem is that I was already mentally on holiday.

With all these short bits of news we are creating a section that might be called sometimes (if it weren’t already registered) ‘Canary Islanders around the world’ and others ‘Stars in the Canaries. This time we have material for both of them. The Nelly National Auditorium in Montevideo, Uruguay, welcomes the company Nómada from Tenerife, and its dance spectacle Tábula rasa. We also export all types of music: from the punk rock of Las Ratas in the Aúpa Lumbreiras Festival in Alicante to the jazz couplet N-Candela in Andrax Son Mas Castle, on Majorca. And the Canary Islands Timple Orchestra plays at the Galileo Hall in Madrid. And we had cinema being filmed with stars. Actually, we still do. On Gran Canaria, Mario Casas and Adriana Ugarte are playing the leading roles in the film adaptation of Palms in the Snow, a play by Luz Gabás, directed for the big screen by Fernando González Molina. It seems, according to the Diario de Avisos, that further filming will take place Tenerife in September.

View of Roque Nublo. Gran Canaria’s Turism Board.

Canary Islands From the Roque Nublo to the Teide Canary Islanders are proud of our symbols of identity. All of the islands share common elements of architecture, culture and gastronomy: from the roasted maize meal called gofio to the harvest festivals known as romerĂas, including papas con mojo (potatoes served with special Canary sauce) , vegetable stews, clear open skies, the ocean, goat meat and our fabulous dragon trees. And of course, we have the most wonderful carnival in the world. But there is no doubt that each of the islands has its own fundamental identifying features , which we truly enjoy sharing with family or visitors who come to get to know us. Here we do not attempt to present them all, but do want to share with you many of those which for us, give each of the seven Canary islands its own identity.

Fuerteventura El Cotillo.

The partner of the wind

The relationship between Fuerteventura and the wind is immemorial; it’s not conceived one without the other. But it has also been productive and useful. The best example is the hundreds of windmills one can find when you go over it, becoming part of its landscape as another element of nature. In the seventies they start to preserve them with the Fuerteventura’s Cabildo Programme of Preservarion of the Windmills and nowadays 23 of them are Properties of Cultural Interest (BIC). Windmills and ‘female windmills’ > You’ll ask yourself what is the difference between these two concepts, and it’s very simple. Windmill of male windmill (as they are known in the Island) have their referent in the windmills from Castilla. Its floor is circular; they can have two or three floors and four or six blades. The grinding machine is placed in the base of the tower and in the last floor there’s the toothed wheel with its shaft, spindle and blades. On the other hand, the ‘female’ windmill is more modern and It was created by a ‘palmero’ (the habitant of La Palma), IT has six blades and its use is Tiscamanitas.

more practical, because it has everything the miller needs to grind and handle the mill in just one floor, avoiding to go up and down the stairs.

potatoes and sauce

Ribs with potatoes and corn and coriander sauce Ribs with potatoes, corn and coriander sauce is one of the insignia dishes of the island of Tenerife. It’s a delicious combination, cheap and simple, perfect for autumn. Together with a red wine from Tenerife it’s a delicious dish.

Elaboration It’s a very easy dish to cook. It’s very important not to forget to desalt the ribs the night before. To prepare it we put the ribs together with the ears of corn previously cut into three pieces, into a pot with plenty of water and without salt. When the ribs are ready, about three quarters of hour after they start boiling (maybe a bit long, it depends on the size of the ribs) we add the peeled potatoes. You’ll know it’s all cooked when the potatoes are ready. We drain it all carefully and pour the coriander sauce over it, coating it all with the coriander taste. The rest of the sauce we put it into a sauce boat so anyone can add more to their own taste. Some people take everything out the cooking pot and serve it on a platter without the sauce, letting their guest add the sauce as they please. Carlos Pérez-Godiño Foremost Servant to the Christ of La Laguna Devotion and festivity go hand in hand in September in the city of La Laguna. On the 14th of September, one of the most important holidays on the island of Tenerife is celebrated in the honour of the image of Jesus Christ. Moments of recognition and homage to the Holy Master are combined with fun and gatherings with friends, and traditions are ever present. Carlos Pérez-Godiño is the Foremost Servant to Christ and our protagonist in Canary Style, because the festive part of the holiday is easy to imagine, but we want to learn how it is perceived with religious fervour.

Boyhood Dir.: Richard Linklater This is one of the most highly-anticipated cinephile events of the year. Richard Linklater, best known for the trilogy which commenced with Before Sunrise, experiments with dividing the usual 40 days of shooting into 12 years, recording the real evolution of a boy (Ellar Coltrane) who starts out at 6 years of age and ends the film at 18. Actors such as Ethan Hawke or Patricia Arquette participate in the experiment. The success of the film at Sundance and Berlin makes one want to see it even more.

BR Homeland (Seasons 1, 2 y 3) Scott Brody is a sergeant in the USA marine corps who returns from Iraq after being missing for 8 years. Carrie Mathison is an impulsive CIA agent, specialized in Islamic terrorism. Between the characters and their surroundings, Homeland creates an exciting puzzle where sometimes nothing is what it seems.
