beach volley champions, Elsa Baquerizo and Liliana Fernández, with their coach Daniel Rodríguez Wood from Tenerife, are the object of our main interview. They tell us how they’ve succeeded in reaching first place on the podium so many times and share with us their dream of representing Spain in Rio in 2016. Carnival is around the corner, and it fills the feature report pages but this time told in first person by carnival participants from all the Islands, who tell us how they live the biggest and most highly anticipated party of the year. prehend part of our culture and origin. For this reason we like the news explained in a lecture by one of the most distinguished full professors of Spanish language and literature in the Canaries, Marcial Morera, professor of the University of La Laguna. Professor Morera, in a most interesting lecture at the Ateneo of La Laguna, explained to his audience many of the peculiarities of the Spanish spoken in the Canary Islands. “In the Canaries we speak Spanish, but there are still people who do not know this, and up to point it’s logical, since the Canarian way of speaking is full of idiosyncrasies. In any event, we do not speak, and never have spoken, Castilian”, he stated.

culture
Culture doesn’t seem to like the end of the year Between so many compilations, so many Russian dances and so many gospel concerts, at the end of the year, Culture has a hard time finding room for anything new. I remind you – I’ve said this before – that this page is not intended to be an agenda of events, but rather an overview of highlighted cultural news for the Islands, and these take up less and less of our everyday life. Fortunately there are exceptions. Without doubt one of the most important revelations in these past two months was the publication of a discovery (for the world) in the Canaries, which has to do with Dali, with a playwright from Gran Canaria and with a researcher from Tenerife. But I’m getting ahead of myself. Texts: Domingo J. González

Elsa y Lili A pair of three Liliana FernĂĄndez and Elsa Baquerizo, together with their coach, Daniel RodrĂguez Wood from Tenerife, form a pair consisting of three people. Together Lili and Elsa have been Spanish champions for six consecutive years, as well as sub-champions of Europe and with their coach, they participated in the Olympic Games in London. They come to the pages of our magazine to tell us how they came this far and what their plans are for the future, plans that include the Olympics in Rio.

As the dates of Carnival draw closer, I start feeling an itch inside and I start thinking about my costume, which I always leave to the last minute. In La Gomera Carnival is fun, too, but after having participated in the Tenerife Carnival, they are nothing alike. In Valle Gran Rey there are drum groups, they hold costume competitions the same day of the parade and that night they award the prizes… On one day they hold a “Boy, dress like a girl” day, the guys dress up like women, or rather like Drag Queens. In all the villages in La Gomera they hold their own competitions, parades and of course dances with bands playing.
Elva Viera > Lanzarote > 29 years old > Sign language Interprete > Carnival is a party, it’s a time of the year where you can transform yourself, turning into the character or thing you choose. And at the same time, you can adopt a new personality, which maybe will allow you to experience things your own personality would never permit. When Carnival comes around I don’t really think about anything in particular, it’s more the sensations: the smell of the fabric, the makeup and the costumes, the doubt, not knowing what to turn myself into this year, the anticipation of how much fun you will have… > How do I live the Carnival in the street? Well, for me, that is the part of Carnival that is the most fun, and what I truly await eagerly every year. It’s the street party part of Carnival where you can experience everything Carnival has to offer.

Graciela Martín > Las Palmas de Gran Canaria > 33 years old > Nurse > For me Carnival is the ultimate party of the Canary Islands. I was born into a very ‘carnavalera’ family and when February came around, the sound of the sewing machine didn’t stop. We had to make so many things, costumes for every member of the family; our home was an explosion of colour: clothing, sequins and loads of glitter everywhere. So, we always lived through the weeks prior to Carnival with so much excitement, getting everything ready, sometimes following the theme of the year and others finally making that costume we had always wished for. > How do you live the Carnival in the street? Well, I don’t know any other way of participating in Carnival. It has to be lived in the street. I also enjoy the galas and all the other events that take place during Carnival. I call them ‘the performances’. I watch some of them live from the stands, and it really is worthwhile, the galas are more and more spectacular each year. But then you have to go out into the street, dance to the sound of drums while the ‘comparseros’ (dancers from the troupes) shake their feathers. And of course we have to forget about everything else for at least a few days (unfortunately fewer and fewer every year.) And you have to merge with the crowd, because although things change, Carnival is the people’s party and it must be lived in the street. And the essence of it all is always the same: to have fun.
Jorge Suárez > 41 years (36 of them in the Carnival) > Lawyer and a member of the Murga Los Mamelucos > What does Carnival mean to you? Undoubtedly, Carnival is the most important date of the year. You spend a lot of time preparing and you work for many months before and it’s when Carnival comes that you offer the public the work you have been preparing with so much eagerness and enthusiasm. You invest so many hours in the work and it’s a big sacrifice on a personal level for us, the ‘murgueros’ (members of the humorous Carnival singing groups) because you take time from your family to dedicate to Carnival. > How do you live the Carnival in the Street? You live it from two different points of view. On one hand, you are a direct participant in the whole celebration of Carnival, competitions, street shows, opening parade and final parade; you are a protagonist of the party. And on the other hand, you enjoy the carnival as an observer in the street. You’re watching a party you have worked so hard for, putting in so much effort with the main objective of making people have fun and, of course, at the same time, you too enjoy and live to the upmost the most awaited moment: Carnival.

Moonscape Nature’s whims have left our islands with a great variety of landscapes, of which some seem impossible and others are unimaginable. This is the case with the place we are taking you to visit this time. It seems as if the universe went crazy and gave us the gift of a piece of the moon in the middle of a forest. If you don’t think that’s possible, just keep reading.

Carmina’s Rancho With a taste of paprika from la Vera Is than anything more Canarian than a rancho? Cold weather seems to urge us to try one of the delightful dishes of our Islands, and Mama Carmen tells us how she makes her rancho. Don’t tell me it doesn´t make you hungry just thinking about it!
Preparation SautĂŠ the garlic, onion and pepper with a bit of oil and when these are soft, add the paprika and a bit of yellow colouring. Add the meat
Ingredients for 4 people: > 2 cloves of garlic > 1 onion > 1 red bell pepper > 1 tsp paprika > 1 pinch of yellow colouring > 5 medium size potatoes > 1 small tin or jar of cooked chickpeas (o boil your own before starting) > Small size elbow macaroni o thick noodles, as you prefer > Chorizo sausage (to taste, at least one slice per person) > 4 pork ribs, de-salted > A chicken breast or 250 grams of stewing beef, (optional)
(chicken or beef if used and the pork ribs and chorizo) and brown it. Take the pot off the stove. Cut the potatoes cut into cubes and add them together with the chickpeas (wash these well if you bought them already cooked). Cover with water and bring to boil; let it all boil for a quarter of an hour. When the potatoes are done, add the pasta and let it cook for 4 minutes for noodles or until the elbow macaroni is cooked. Stir to keep it from sticking. Add salt to taste.

Birdman (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) Dir. Alejandro González Iñárritu The Mexican director Alejandro González Iñárritu became an institution in Hollywood thanks to films such as Amores Perros and 21 Grams. Now he returns with a film that many consider his best work yet and that will be presented as a possible winner (certainly as a nominee) at the next Oscar Ceremony. An impressive cast including Michael Keaton, Emma Stone, Edward Norton and Naomi Watts makes this work in which Iñarrituru reaches out to Broadway with choral cinema (what else?) even more enticing.

EXHIBIT Avant-Garde Theatre La Recova Art Centre, SC de Tenerife. From 16/01 onwards Informing the public about the theatre that defended and created our historic avantgarde artists is the main objective of this exhibit, Avant-Garde in the Canary Islands, which is part of Roberto García de Mesa’s ambitious information project. On March 6th an audio-visual project directed by Jairo López and produced by Digital 104, will premier in the Guimerá Theatre. It was on another March 6th in 1939 that the play Tic-Tac by Claudio de La Torre, one of the most important works of Spanish Avant-Garde Theatre, premiered in the same theatre.
