DIRECTOR’S NOTE WELCOME We’ve been in the business of delivering great experiences for more than 50 years, enhancing Canberra’s appeal not only to residents, but also to those visiting our Nation’s Capital. This past year, more than 220,000 people visited our theatres, generating over $4.2m of expenditure on dining within the Civic Square cultural district. We are firm believers in a community that embraces art in all its forms and as a result is richer, more vibrant and more lively.

THE SEASON As part of such a community, Canberra Theatre Centre’s 2016 line-up is all about the creation of feeling. We’ve compiled a program to delight children and grandparents alike, challenge our drama lovers and entertain everyone in The Famous Spiegeltent camped in Civic Square. Next year’s season is one of our best. We’re bringing the nation’s best theatre and dance companies to the capital for a unique program that will intrigue our patrons, and attract new audiences for the Canberra Theatre Centre.

UNFOLDING A NEW SEASON

My personal highlights include the children’s show The Peasant Prince – the inspiring story of Li Cunxin, currently Artistic Director of Queensland Ballet and bringing us The Nutcracker later in the year. I’m delighted that two of Australia’s most well known playwrights, Andrew Bovell (The Secret River) and Hannie Rayson (Hotel Sorrento), are also in the mix, raising questions about the issues we face in our daily lives, including the challenges of grief and love, and the threat of climate change. This year, we are adding a new venue experience to our Season with the inclusion of The Famous Spiegeltent which will be in Civic Square next February and March. This will be an experience to rival them all and I urge you to partake in at least one of the numerous performances that will grace its stage.

FURTHER YOUR EXPERIENCE IN 2016 Beyond the action on stage, you can extend your engagement with our 2016 shows through Take Part – a series of talks, Q&A sessions, forums and special events. Take Part includes collaborations with local and national institutions. Through Take Part, you can meet those involved in the productions, see linked events such as the William Yang exhibition at Canberra Museum and Gallery, and participate in stimulating talks to gain a deeper understanding of the performance. Make sure you look for ways to Take Part in the shows you select in Season 2016. Theatre is, of course, an experience for all. To this end, we will continue provision of first-class access programs and facilities, and continue to provide tickets to those who otherwise couldn’t afford them through our Social Capital Program. You’ll have more leg room and improved sound and lighting in the Canberra Theatre in 2016, thanks to the ACT Government’s continued Capital Works program. As always, a huge thank you to our Season Ticket holders for your support. I look forward to sharing an incredible Season of experiences with you all in 2016.

Monkey Baa brings Li Cunxin’s autobiography Mao’s Last Dancer to the stage. First published as a children’s picture book, The Peasant Prince tells Li’s story from when, aged 10, he was plucked from rural China to attend a ballet academy, leaving behind everything and everyone he knew, including his beloved parents.

BRILLIANT THEATRE PARTICULAR TO OUR TIME AND PLACE The Price family appears to be living the Australian dream – a loving household, a quarter acre block where time is measured by the seasonal changes in working class patriarch Bob’s beloved roses. The four kids have grown up and spread their wings, with only the youngest, Rosie, still at home. As the seasons turn, their story becomes darker and more difficult. But with complexity comes richness, resolution and meaning.

A newly commissioned play from one of our greatest contemporary playwrights, Andrew Bovell, (The Secret River, When the Rain Stops Falling and Lantana) is cause enough for celebration – but add to that an international collaboration with the extraordinary Frantic Assembly, (The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime) a brilliant cast including stage icon Paul Blackwell, the outstanding Nathan O’Keefe (Betrayal, The Importance of Being Earnest) and introducing rising star Tilda Cobham-Hervey, and you have the ingredients of something special.

A FICTIONALISED STORY INSPIRED BY THE LIFE OF JIMMY LITTLE BY REG CRIBB. ORIGINAL CONCEPT BY MICHAEL TUAHINE

Country Song is a fictionalised story inspired by the life of Jimmy Little - a witty, warm journey back into Australia’s recent past. It’s a rollicking celebration featuring music from some of Australia’s renowned Indigenous entertainers and pure escapist entertainment, revelling in the healing power of music.

Michael Tuahine leads a cast of six actor/ musicians in this yarn drawing on the life of the gentleman balladeer, peppered with oldtime hits from Johnny Cash and Marty Robbins to Jimmy’s own No.1 Royal Telephone and his covers of ‘80s hits Under the Milky Way and Blackfella/Whitefella.

It’s the ’70s, and Jimmy takes a nostalgic trip through his past from talented teen to honeyvoiced guitar-slinger to respected leader. Indigenous icons weave in and out of his life, as they chalk up a list of firsts for their people as Australia goes through a turbulent change.

Jasmin Sheppard’s unforgettable Macq (first performed in 2013 during Dance Clan 3) is brought to the main stage, exploring the 1816 March of Macquarie – a historical chapter that decimated Sydney’s Aboriginal community.

AN INSPIRING FUSION OF OLD AND NEW

Daniel Riley and Beau Dean Riley Smith create Miyagan, a poignant dance story mapping their cultural heritage in a discovery of their family background on Wiradjuri country in NSW.

Artistic Director Stephen Page tells the story of internationally acclaimed visual artist Nyapanyapa Yunupingu from North East Arnhem Land. This piece draws inspiration from her incredible life story and unique paintings.

ACCESS INFORMATION Canberra Theatre Centre offers a range of services to ensure that its venues and shows are accessible to all. Please note, it is essential that you tick the appropriate boxes with regard to special assistance requirements on your season booking form. You will then be issued with a ticket for the service you have reserved as part of your Season Ticket package. All devices can be collected from Canberra Theatre Centre Cloak Room. Please see the show pages or the diary pages 24-28 for the dates of dedicated access performances.

WHEELCHAIR ACCESS AND MOBILITY ASSISTANCE Wheelchair spaces are available in all theatres and we can provide assistance with other mobility issues. A carer is entitled to a free ticket when accompanying a paid Companion Card holder to the theatre. Please indicate when booking your ticket if you are a Companion Card holder. You will be required to present a copy of your companion card to the Box Office to finalise your booking.

LIVE CAPTIONS Selected performances in Collected Works 2016 will be live captioned. All dialogue and sound effects are described in real time on screens in the theatre or via the new Go Theatrical! smart phone and tablet applications. These can be downloaded from iTunes or Android Market Place. Patrons without access to these devices will be able to book an iPod Touch* by ticking the relevant box on your booking form. Our services for the deaf and hearing impaired are provided with the assistance of Better Hearing Australia, ACT Deafness Resource Centre, Mac1 ANU and The Captioning Studio. * Limited numbers available.

TACTILE TOUR Selected performances in Collected Works 2016 may offer a pre-show guided tactile tour of the set for patrons with low or no vision. To book for the tactile tours please select the relevant box on your booking form.

AUDIO DESCRIPTION

FOR THE DEAF AND HEARING IMPAIRED FM RADIO-ASSISTED HEARING SYSTEM An FM radio-assisted hearing system is available for all performances in the Canberra Theatre and The Playhouse. This system amplifies the sound through the use of a supplied headset or the patron’s own neck loop. A limited number of these units are available. Please tick on your booking form to reserve a unit.

FOYER LOOP A hearing loop for foyer announcements, forums and speeches operates throughout the Link foyer and foyer space of the Canberra Theatre. Please note that the box office and toilets are not covered by the loop. The system is accessible via hearing aids with a telephone setting. Please note, reception quality and levels may vary according to the age and type of hearing aid.

Selected performances in Collected Works 2016 will be audio described by trained volunteers from our access partner, Vision Australia. Audio description provides minimal narration, between dialogue, of the visual elements of live theatre, transmitted through a small receiver and earpiece. Please tick the relevant box on your booking form to reserve a unit.

PROOF OF CONCESSION Please provide photocopied proof with your booking form. A photocopied driver’s licence is preferable for Under 27. Your form cannot be processed until the Box Office receives the copies of your concessions. Canberra Ticketing staff will happily photocopy your concession for you if you deliver your form, in person to the Box Office. SPECIAL ASSISTANCE If you would like to access wheelchair seating, our audio description or captioning services, don’t forget to indicate the type of assistance you require on the booking form. DRINK & GALA OPENING VOUCHERS Spend more time socialising during interval without having to wait in long queues at the bar by pre-purchasing drink vouchers. Please indicate on the booking form if you wish to pre-purchase drinks. To pre-order your interval drinks on the night, simply present your drink vouchers to the bar staff prior to the show. Lost drink vouchers are unable to be replaced. Patrons attending nominated Gala Opening nights will receive a voucher entitling them entry to the post-show function. All vouchers will be sent with your show tickets. SPLIT THE BILL Would you like to pay for your Season Ticket package in two easy payments? We can charge your credit card half of the total price now, and the remainder in 1 April 2016. A transaction fee of $10 will apply. You will be sent an email reminder in March to obtain the payment details to set up the second payment.

YOUR SEASON 2016 PREFERENCES Please indicate, where requested, whether seating preference or preferred date is your priority.

CHILDREN Special children prices apply to Little Shop of Horrors, The Marriage of Figaro, Carnival of the Animals and The Nutcracker, for patrons aged 15 years and under.

DATE Please choose your preferred date and time for each performance along with an alternative date and time.

For shows where no specific child price is listed, the Under 27 (U27) or Bell Under 18 (Bell U18) price applies. Please note that while some shows in Collected Works 2016 may be suitable for children, parental discretion is advised.

ADDITIONAL TICKETS FOR FRIENDS For selected productions you may purchase additional tickets for friends at the Season Ticket holder price. Additional tickets are limited to two per Season Ticket holder and are available only at the time of purchasing your Season Ticket package. For other productions you may also purchase additional tickets at single ticket prices – make sure these are selected as Additional Tickets. However the advertised single ticket price for Little Shop of Horrors is not guaranteed after 1 January 2016. SEATING For the best seats in the house, buy in the A-Reserve or Premium area as shown on the seating maps. You may have a combination of Premium seats with an A-Reserve or B-Reserve package. Please note that A-Reserve and Premium seats are very popular and may sell-out, so buy early to avoid disappointment. For some productions, the orchestra pit seats will be held off sale. The Playhouse: seating is available on three levels: stalls, first and second balcony (please note: there is no lift access to the second balcony). The balcony sides are held off sale until production sightlines have been established. Canberra Theatre: seating is one raked tier. WHEELCHAIR SEATS Wheelchair spaces are available in the Canberra Theatre and The Playhouse and are located in the stalls. SEASON TICKETS FOR GROUPS If you are purchasing a Season Ticket with others please ensure that all booking forms are returned in the same envelope at the same time, otherwise you will not be seated together. Please include the contact details of all additional patrons. For large groups, please submit forms early. TICKET EXCHANGES You can exchange your tickets free of charge for any other performance of the same production. Conditions apply and are subject to availability. In order to exchange, original tickets must be returned in person to Canberra Ticketing at least 24 hours before the earliest of the performances. EVENT TICKET INSURANCE Unexpected situations such as medical emergencies can happen, guarantee yourself against loss by purchasing ticket insurance. For a small fee (listed on the booking form) you can cover your event costs by purchasing ticket insurance. Subject to the terms and conditions of the policy, you may be covered for: medical emergency, illness, injury or death occurring to you, your immediate family or companion,

traffic collision on your way to the event, mechanical breakdown, jury duty, airline delays on your way to the event, redundancy or relocation of you or your companion’s employment including any military duty. CONCESSION & SENIOR PRICES Selected shows offer concession prices. Concession prices are available for pensioners, health care card holders and full-time students. Bell Shakespeare offers a concession price for Government issued senior cards. RESERVES Seating plans showing seating reserves can be found online at canberratheatrecentre.com.au. Little Shop of Horrors and The Marriage of Figaro offer Premium, A and B Reserve. Romeo and Juliet and Othello offer Premium and A reserve to Season Ticket holders. A and B Reserves do not apply to La Clique, Blood Links and Carnival of the Animals. There is one fixed price for the whole auditorium. All other productions have A and B Reserves. Sales for C Reserve open at a later time. SINGLE TICKETS Prices listed for single tickets are the advertised ticket price for non-season ticket holders. UNDER 27 (U27) & BELL YOUTH UNDER 30 (BELL U30) Under 27 prices apply to selected shows. Bell Shakespeare offer Under 30 prices to patrons aged 30 years through their Youth Under 30 initiative (limited availability per selected performance).
