WELCOME On the eve of my departure from this role I’m looking back at the last 12 years with the fondest memories, and I look forward to the future with the greatest hopes for Canberra Theatre Centre. The season that the team here have put together for 2020 is full to the brim with excellent shows and I encourage you to take a look. ENTERTAINMENT BY NUMBERS Arts and entertainment venues make a great contribution to their communities. Some of this contribution, particularly connecting communities, cannot be easily measured. Other aspects of the contribution, specifically economic, can be measured, and we have never been more proud of how our numbers stack up. In 2018/2019 we had more than 275,000 people walk through the front door to see over 550 performances. This created $32.9 million in economic impact for Canberra, which is an increase of more than 10% over the previous year.

THE SEASON Canberra audiences have proven their appetite for spectacular live entertainment of all genres and scales. For lovers of stage drama, we have Belvoir with My Brilliant Career, and Malthouse Theatre with Wake In Fright. We also welcome back the inimitable Shake & Stir who return to Canberra with Animal Farm. From the cutting edge of Australian theatre we have Griffin Theatre Company bringing us David Williamson’s latest work, Family Values. Also hot off the presses and ready for its premiere in 2020 is Ensemble Theatre Company’s A Broadcast Coup, written by ABC Radio talent and local legend Melanie Tait. Monty Python’s Spamalot, The Choir of Man and Circa’s acrobatic masterpiece, Peepshow are all making an appearance to fill your cup with laughter and excitement. Of course, it wouldn’t be a Canberra Theatre Centre season without the return of season

favourites, Bangarra Dance Theatre with yet another new and outstanding work, and Bell Shakespeare with The Comedy of Errors and the iconic Hamlet. This year we wave goodbye to comedy stalwarts The Wharf Revue, who in 2020 will wrap up their decades-long act with a Good Night and Good Luck show! And finally, for the fans of the sensational and spectacular, Opera Australia is bringing us two works in 2020. We’re planning to marvel at Bizet’s Carmen, performed in French with English surtitles, and to sing along with Bran Nue Dae, Australia’s beloved homegrown musical.

To all the friends I’ve made in foyers over the years, thank you for being on this journey with me. Don’t forget, if you have a millennial in your life that you would like to share a great night out with, theatregoers aged under 30 get excellent discounts on tickets to all season shows!

DIRECTOR LEE LEWIS

On his birthday all he wants is a low-key celebration with his wife and three children. But when one of his daughters, a left-wing activist, brings home an asylum seeker on the run from Nauru, old resentments start to resurface. At this family gathering, their values are laid bare. Politics, religion, sex — no topic is off the table.

DRAMATURG VAN BADHAM

For 50 years, David Williamson has shown us the best and worst of ourselves. A darkly comic drama situated squarely on the fault lines that divide Australia. HAMLET 9–18 APRIL drama / the PLAYhouse

Inside the glamorous court of Denmark in the 1960s, a family is torn apart by murder and betrayal. Outside, a country is threatened by Norway. And at the centre of this struggle is a man brimming with anguish. Hamlet is a portrait of a young man struggling with the death of his father, his mother’s hasty remarriage to his uncle, and the vision of his father’s ghost looming in his mind’s eye. A story of revenge, passion and deception, this is a Hamlet for our time. Bell Shakespeare opens its 30th year anniversary celebrations with one of Shakespeare’s most iconic and tragic works, directed by Artistic Director Peter Evans. Featuring Harriet Gordon-Anderson (The Miser) as a young man experiencing grief in its most complex and profound state, this Hamlet will be told through the lens of loss, betrayal and madness.

BROADCAST COUP 27–30 MAY drama / the PLAYhouse

Cut-throat journalist Jez Connell is out for her next sting. It’s been a year since she brought down one of TV’s most lauded stars and now she’s got Michael King, the darling of public radio, in her sights. This time, it’s personal. Michael is at the top of the ratings with his popular morning political program, a shelf of bestselling history books and an over-flowing dinner speaking schedule. He’s a Walkley award-winning national treasure. Nothing can bring him down … except maybe a #metoo scandal. With the loyalty of his longstanding producer (the real brains behind his success) wavering and a hip, up-and-coming podcaster eager to take the mike, has the plug been pulled on Michael’s career? Using her characteristic charm, whip-smart dialogue, sapient insight and irrepressible wit, this is playwright Melanie Tait at her finest. Under the direction of Priscilla Jackman and working with the impeccable comedic skills of Amber McMahon, A Broadcast Coup will send ripples through the airwaves and spark heated debate, while you laugh-out-loud.

WAKE iN FRIGHT A NEW PLAY Adapted from Kenneth Cook’s novel CO-CREATED BY Declan Greene and Zahra Newman

G’day. Welcome to the Yabba. Just passing through? It’s the best little town in the world. Things a bit grim? Chin up. John Grant is well-read, but an outback misadventure strands him—cashless and jobless—in a harsh and remote Aussie outpost, Bundanyabba. So, he makes new ‘mates’: they’re quick with a drink, but with every scull a dark violence lurches forward. Are these blokes fair dinkum, or is there something more sinister at the heart of this little Aussie town?

ANiMAL FARM By George Orwell Created & adapted by shake & stir

20–22 AUGUST drama / the PLAYhouse

Animal Farm, one of the most enduring political commentaries returns in a multi-award winning, criticallyacclaimed theatre production. George Orwell’s intensely powerful fairy tale allegorises and satirises communist governments while illustrating with stunning simplicity how greed and power corrupts with devastating consequences to all who yield. Revolution has taken place at Manor Farm. The pigs have assumed control and all the animals, fuelled by enthusiastic camaraderie and guided by a set of self-imposed rules, are promised a better life free from the self-serving greed of humans. However, it is not long until the rules that promised equality and freedom become the shackles that bind the animals once again. Created by shake & stir and directed by Michael Futcher, Animal Farm promises to be one of the most shocking, relevant and wickedly funny theatre events of 2020.

At the heart of this tale of comedic misfortune is an old man searching for his lost children, who has found himself in the fight of his life… to save his life. As far-fetched coincidences unfold, chaotic hilarity ensues and a man’s life could be saved, if only everything would go to plan.
