MESSAGE from the ARTS MINISTER
TARA CHEYNE MLA
Canberra Theatre Centre’s Education program in 2023 is unmissable. After a pause on excursions in recent years, this is the perfect time to welcome your students back into the world of theatre for some inspiration.
We have an ambition for Canberra to be recognised as Australia’s arts capital, and key within this goal is the creation of programs that ensure that the next generation can experience the unique joy of attending live performance.
The importance of arts education has never been more apparent, with Australian and international research1 revealing that students who engage in quality arts experiences are more likely to achieve better grades, have higher-order thinking skills and increased motivation than those who do not.
Canberra’s arts, culture and creative industries are strong, and this is reflected in the quality and diversity of offerings at Canberra Theatre Centre this coming year. The 2023 program at Canberra Theatre Centre welcomes the return of students to the theatre, with 11 productions from across Australia, including beloved classic Australian stories, live music, physical theatre, and political dramas.
Canberra Theatre Centre’s Creative Learning team continues to be a leader in Arts Education through their numerous opportunities for further learning, including Work Experience, the Vocational Education and Training program for Certificate III in Live Production & Services (CUA30415), and the return of the beloved ACT UP! Festival for its ninth year.
I am proud to support this program that ensures creative experiences for Canberrans at all levels and fosters a love for the arts that will last a lifetime, and I hope you and your students can make the most of it in 2023.

As educators, you know that theatre brings joy, curiosity, and valuable learning opportunities to young audiences.

DAN CLARKE, HEAD OF PROGRAMMING AND ABOVE RIGHT: GILLIAN SCHWAB, MANAGER, PROGRAM AND PRESENTER SERVICES
At Canberra Theatre Centre we know that young people are not just the audiences of tomorrow; they are the audiences of right now. We are proud to have programmed a season that reflects the importance and value young people have in our society.
This year we are bringing productions from around the country and overseas that will not only delight and inspire our young audiences, but also challenge them. We hope to spark conversations that last for many days after you and your students leave our theatre.
For ELC and Primary School audiences, we open with two innovative works from The Last Great Hunt that combine leading technology with magical storytelling. Other season highlights include adaptations from beloved Australian writers, Alison Lester and Mem Fox; and you can expect a healthy dose of musical and puppetry fun throughout.
For all ages we are excited to bring the internationally acclaimed 360 ALLSTARS – a circus-music-sportbreakdancing theatrical extravaganza that will have you on the edge of your seat.
For our Secondary School audiences, we have programmed productions that have a particular urgency and resonance for young people right now. The works on our stages explore many relevant and important themes including equality in contemporary politics, consent and healthy relationships, the search for identity, and truth-telling in history.
Our entire season is closely aligned with the Australian Curriculum, and caters to many Learning Areas including The Arts, English, HASS and Health and Physical Education to name a few. Each production will be accompanied by resources to enhance your students’ experience both before and after visiting the venue. As always, you are welcome to reach out to our Creative Learning team at any time throughout for more information or help – we love hearing questions and feedback from our local education experts.

CANBERRA THEATRE CENTRE PRESENTS THE LAST GREAT HUNT’S
The Adventures of ALVIN SPUTNIK: Deep Sea Explorer
BY TIM WATTS
The seas have risen, billions have died and those who are left live on farms atop skyscrapers and mountains. The scientists tried everything. Floating islands sank, space probes found nothing, and efforts to refreeze the icecaps failed. Now, science and humanity are turning to the oceans themselves. A last-ditch effort to save the human race requires a journey down through the mysterious depths of the deep blue sea to find a new place for us to live..
Alvin Sputnik, who has just lost his wife, accepts this perilous mission so that he may follow her soul down to the underworld to be together once more.
SUSTAINABILITY, SCIENCE, RESILIENCE
This exquisite one-man show is a unique and charming performance, which is emotional, uplifting, touching and funny – a pocket masterpiece of theatre.

POSSUM MAGIC
Mem Fox and Julie Vivas’ beloved picture book Possum Magic has enchanted children for decades and Monkey Baa Theatre Company brings the paper and ink to life on stage once again.
Using a clever, nuanced palette of live action, stage magic, an original soundscape, elements of puppetry and projected animation, Monkey Baa’s award-winning creative team have translated the whimsical world of the book to a live experience for audiences 3-8 years (and their families).
Grandma Poss loves making magic. She makes wombats blue and kookaburras pink.
She makes dingoes smile and emus shrink. But one day, when danger arrives in the form of a snake, Grandma uses her most magical spell to make Hush invisible. Hush has many wonderful adventures. But being invisible isn’t all it’s cracked up to be, and Hush longs to see herself again. One problem. Grandma Poss can’t find the spell to make Hush visible again. And then she remembers... this particular magic requires something more, something special, something to do with food... people food. Possum Magic takes us on a whimsical journey to cities around Australia to find the food that makes Hush visible again.
This show may contain strobe lighting and fog/haze effects.
The magical stage adaptation of the beloved Australian story is back to celebrate its 40th birthday!

JULIA
BY JOANNA MURRAY-SMITH DIRECTED BY SARAH GOODES WITH JUSTINE CLARKE
Not now, not ever.
In 2012 Julia Gillard, Australia’s first female prime minister, gave a speech that sent shockwaves around the world.
Now, ten years later, one of Australia’s most esteemed and celebrated playwrights, Joanna Murray-Smith, brings the human story behind that speech to the stage.
Julia is an extraordinary new play that will see the glorious Justine Clarke (Children of the Sun) embody the life and career that led to the ‘misogyny speech’, in a phenomenal performance directed by Helpmann Award-winning Sarah Goodes (The Children).
This is both an intimate and compelling insight into the person behind the public mask, and a reflection on the experience of women in contemporary politics.
POLITICS, FEMINISM, MODERN HISTORY
Combining excerpts from Gillard’s speech with Murray-Smith’s incredible dramatic imagination, this play is a thrilling coming together of history and art.
Around the world, we are seeing the most profound rollbacks to women’s rights legislation in two generations. At the same time, there have been encouraging strides forward in the representation of women in positions of power, both at home and abroad. In this climate, Julia is a rousing and energising reminder of where we’ve come from and an empowering imagining of the challenges yet to come.
Julia offers students the chance to be among the first in the world to see this outstanding new Australian work premiering at Canberra Theatre Centre.

THE VISITORS
BY JANE HARRISON DIRECTED BY WESLEY ENOCH
Visitors leave. Right?
On a sweltering day in January 1788, seven clan leaders gather on a sandstone escarpment overlooking the harbour. The attendees, six of them Elders and one new initiate, catch-up, laugh together, share a meal and compare notes. But beyond the friendly banter, protocols, and hospitality, a momentous decision is waiting to be made.
A mysterious fleet of giant nawi is amassing in the harbour and as they creep closer, these seven representatives must choose unanimously: whether to send these strangers on their way or welcome them?
FIRST NATIONS HISTORIES AND CULTURE
After its Sydney Theatre Award-winning premiere production at the 2020 Sydney Festival, Muruwari playwright Jane Harrison’s The Visitors will be reworked for this brand new production directed by one of Australia’s most celebrated directors, Quandamooka man Wesley Enoch.
Co-produced by Sydney Theatre Company and Moogahlin Performing Arts, The Visitors is at once a riveting, deeply researched insight into one of the most impactful and painful days in Australia’s history, and a hugely entertaining study of how communities respond to change and the unknown.
This production is proudly supported through the Australian Government’s Indigenous Languages and Arts program.
