director’s note

The great worth, not only of the facility but of the people who work within it, was made clear to me during 2012’s season of Barry Humphries’ Eat, Pray, Laugh. This was a genuine world premiere and a true off-broadway try-out. The ability of our staff, especially back stage, to get the show up and running showed that we can play at an international level. On another note, the short play festival for high school children, Fast+Fresh; our continued support of local artistic output via The Courtyard Studio; our world-leading access services; our commitment to social capital tickets and the delivery of Take Part programs — all show how we value our role in our local community.

With 20 shows it is difficult to single out any one, however, it would be remiss of me not to mention the residencies of both Big hART and Jigsaw Theatre Company at CTC. Big hART‘s residency will be one of the Centenary’s legacies to Canberra. Jigsaw is partnering with us to present seasons of work for children. It is thrilling for CTC to once again be the home for artistic creation, adding to the fabric of Civic Square as a genuine artistic precinct. So enjoy the season, enjoy the year and take a trip around Australia without ever having to leave the theatre.

For nearly half of the time Canberra has existed, it has had its own dedicated cultural centre, bringing great national and international work to town and fostering our local artistic community. It is worth noting that CTC was the first of its kind; all of the other major cultural centres including Sydney Opera House and the Arts Centre, Melbourne followed.

All seats are held exclusively for season ticket holders until Monday 26 November 2012, when single tickets go on sale to the general public. A and B reserve season packages are available to enable patrons to choose between better seats or cheaper tickets. Please note that A Reserve seats sold out for most shows in 2012.

I was performing my salute to French Cabaret of the late nineteenth century Le Chat Noir, on the stage of the Canberra Theatre, as part of the 1992 Australian Theatre Festival when David Gration invited me to direct the festival. It was the last thing on my mind, but I accepted, and for the last twenty years directing festivals has been up there with singing and writing: Brecht described as “how I made use of the time on earth allotted me”. Now I‘m working hand-in-hand with the Canberra Theatre Centre again on the project that comes exactly twenty years after the 1993 National Festival of Australian Theatre. Of course I’m talking about The Centenary of Canberra in 2013.

The Victorian Government, through Arts Victoria, is proud to support the performances of JACK CHARLES V THE CROWN as part of the Centenary of Canberra celebrations and this wonderful showcase of Australian arts and culture. This acclaimed one-man show by Koori Elder and veteran actor Uncle Jack Charles and Australia’s longest running Indigenous theatre company, ILBIJERRI, will add a distinct voice to the celebrations in this milestone year. Congratulations Canberra!

From the moment I took on the role of Creative Director of the Centenary, I started to talk to Bruce Carmichael about an ambitious program at CTC in the Centenary year. When a new capital for a newly federated Australia was first conceived, the states were very much involved. the national collecting institutions. During the Centenary of Canberra, a wider and deeper cultural status is restored in many ways, but nowhere more obviously than in this remarkable season which brings together great drama and dance from every state and territory in the nation. It stakes out our capital as the city which Walter Burley Griffin envisioned, not just host to the Australian government but a cultural showplace too. I sincerely thank Bruce Carmichael and his team, and the team at the Centenary of Canberra, especially Beverly Growden, for the huge amount of work they have done to make this incredible season a reality. I also thank most sincerely all those State and Territory Arts departments who have given so generously to make it happen and to give you such a superb year in the theatre. I hope it will proclaim the richness of Australia’s output, as we see it all together in one season as never before. I also hope that at the Federal level this richness will be noted, and at the local level point to a new era for the Canberra Theatre Centre – one in which they can continue to take risks, and inspire you the audience through all the great works which these artists are so proud to bring to the national capital. When convict William Thornhill is exiled from the stinking slums of early nineteenth century London and crosses the globe to New South Wales, he discovers that the penal colony offers something that he had never dared hope for before: a place of his own.

As he and his family seek to establish themselves in this unfamiliar territory, they find that they are not the only ones to lay a claim to the land. As Thornhill’s attachment to the place and the dream deepens, he is driven to make an unspeakable decision that will haunt him for the rest of his life.

How do you make a ballet about Parliament House?

Garry Stewart, artistic director of Australian Dance Theatre,answers this question in Monument, a Centenary of Canberra tribute to one of Australia’s greatest buildings. Working in consultation with Parliament House architect Aldo Giurgola, Stewart will use the design principles of the neoclassical building, now celebrating its 25th anniversary, to shape balletic movement.

Mirroring the building process will be the classical showcase Études, which shows the growth of ballet technique from basic barre exercises to the most exuberant of bravura displays. Both works in this unmissable double bill celebrate the complexity in simplicity; both highlight The Australian Ballet’s versatility and pristine technique.

Founded in 2009 by Fiona Patten and Robbie Swan of the Eros Association, an adult industry lobby group, The Australian Sex Party has contested three elections, winning enough votes in 2010 to feel confident to declare themselves “the major minor party” in Australian politics.

In a political climate increasingly dominated by pseudo-religious and nationalist parties such as Family First or One Nation, this performance charts the emergence of The Australian Sex Party, as they expose hypocrisy, fight against censorship, host brothel open days, and take visiting dignitaries on guided tours of the porn industry. Densely interweaving irreverent hilarity and sobering seriousness, The Major Minor Party is a wild and eye-opening ride through the Australian political landscape.

Garry Stewart is one of the world’s best known choreographers. He redefined Swan Lake into the wry and actionpacked Birdbrain, which went on to become Australia’s most performed contemporary dance work. And now he completely reinvents the ballet Giselle with G.

Fusing the technical prowess of classical ballet with explosive choreography, the eleven formidable dancers of Australian Dance Theatre embody the central themes of hysteria, vulnerability, desire, gender, death and the afterlife. The dancers’ athleticism and deconstructed classicism; a thrilling electronic musical

score driving the work forward at a phenomenal pace; and a hovering panorama of LED screens reconfigure the original ballet, its story and themes. Having already toured extensively to critical acclaim throughout Europe, it is fitting that this work comes to Canberra for Collected Works: Australia. On the edge of the Pilbara, jutting into the Indian Ocean like a hipbone, lies one of humanity’s greatest cultural treasures. Murujuga, the Burrup Peninsula – the world’s largest and oldest art gallery. Inspired by this incredible landscape and drenched in story, song and imagery from the nearby town of Roebourne, Hipbone Sticking Out grabs world history by the throat, spins it upside down and sets its teeth rattling.

One night, in the main street of Roebourne, a young man hits his head on the footpath and finds himself travelling through time from Ngurra Nyujunggamu, “when the world was soft” to

the mining boom of the present. With an incredible cast, Hipbone Sticking Out combines music, story, movement, video, and songs written from Roebourne Prison, to create a mesmerising cosmopolitan work in multiple languages that shows a culture still strong and with a hopeful future. The internationally acclaimed Bangarra Dance Theatre presents BLAK, a new production about the challenges and rewards for Indigenous young people transitioning into adulthood. Embracing their responsibilities, they provide an intrinsic link in the songline that connects the ancient past to our shared future. Based on the artists’ personal experiences, their appreciation of traditional customs and practices, BLAK challenges the sacred place of culture and language in the context of changing social behaviours.

Popular culture disturbs the rhythms of traditional life, so the customary practices of the old are not passing on to the young. The subtlety and strengths of male and female energies are evident in Scar by Canberra’s own Daniel Riley McKinley and Yearning by Stephen Page, ending with Keepers where both choreographers explore a 21st century sensibility. BLAK is about the rites of passage for young men and women, ultimately reaffirming their powerful desire for belonging, to family and country.

FOR THE DEAF AND HEARING IMPAIRED FM RADIO-ASSISTED HEARING SYSTEM An FM radio-assisted hearing system is available for all performances in the Canberra Theatre and The Playhouse. This system amplifies the sound through the use of a supplied headset or the patron’s own neck loop. A limited number of these units are available, please mark on your booking form to reserve a unit.

F OYER LOOP A hearing loop for foyer announcements, forums and speeches operates throughout The Link foyer and foyer space of the Canberra Theatre. Please note that box office and toilets are not covered by the loop system. The system is accessible via hearing aids with a telephone setting. Please note, reception quality and levels may vary according to the age and type of hearing aid.

LIVE CAPTIONS

Selected performances in Season 2013 will be live captioned. All dialogue and sound effects are described in real time on screens in the theatre or via the new Go Theatrical! smart phone and tablet application available for download from iTunes or Android Market

SEATING For the best seats in the house, buy in the A-Reserve area (as shown on seating plan page 57). Wheelchair spaces in the A-Reserve sections of both venues are sold at the B-Reserve rate. For some productions, the orchestra pit seats will be held off sale. Please note that A-Reserve seats are very popular and many sessions in 2012 sold out, so buy early to avoid disappointment. You must select either A or B-Reserve for your entire season. The Playhouse: Seating is available on three levels: stalls, first and second balcony (please note: there is no lift access to the second balcony). The balcony sides are held off sale until production sightlines have been established. Canberra Theatre: Seating is one raked tier. The Courtyard Studio: Features 92 un-numbered seats and access is via general admission. All tickets are A-Reserve. TICKET EXCHANGES You can swap your tickets free of charge for another performance (of the same production), if seats are available. Conditions apply. In order to exchange, original tickets must be returned in person to Canberra Ticketing at least 24 hours before the earliest of the performances. The first exchange per production is free of charges, subsequent exchanges are charged at $2.20. EVENT TICKET INSURANCE New for 2013 is ticket insurance, for a small fee (listed on the booking form) you can guarantee yourself against loss by purchasing ticket insurance. If you are unable to attend due to one of the following reasons, subject to the terms and conditions of the policy including: medical emergency, illness, injury or death occurring to you, your immediate

family or companion, traffic collision on your way to the event, mechanical breakdown, jury duty, airline delays on your way to the event, redundancy or relocation of you or your companion’s employment including any military duty.
