COLLECTED WORKS 2014
from the director
Collected Works 2014 is full of excellent productions delivered by national and international companies. Such a strong season makes highlighting a particular show difficult, however A Murder Is Announced, kicking off the 2014 season, is worthy of mention. From the producers of The Mousetrap and straight from its Sydney and Melbourne seasons, A Murder Is Announced will treat Canberra audiences to another magnificent “whodunit!” by the master of the genre, Agatha Christie. The success of The Mousetrap and subsequent feedback from patrons confirms that this production will enthral and delight audiences. Collected Works 2014 hosts productions from Australia’s great companies: Bangarra Dance Theatre, Bell Shakespeare, Belvoir, Circa, Oz Opera, Sydney Dance Company, State Theatre of South Australia, Sydney Theatre Company and the West Australian Ballet. Amidst these great Australian companies sits the UK production of Admission: One Shilling and the New Zealand production of The Factory. These companies will work with great creatives such as Nancye Hayes, Michael Gow, Judi Farr, Patricia Routledge, Peter Evans, Geordie Brookman, Stephen Page, Jacob Nash, Rafael Bonachela, Gideon Orbazanek, Nathan O’Keefe, Yaron Lifschitz, Jonathan Biggins, Amanda
Bishop, Drew Forsythe and Phillip Scott and the material of William Shakespeare, Oscar Wilde, Agatha Christie, Mozart, Beethovan, Bach and Brahms to bring us Collected Works 2014. This season is for everyone, it’s exciting and entertaining, overflowing with the world’s best creative’s, full of intrigue and humour; all within your Canberra Theatre Centre. Collected Works 2014 brings to mind a quote from Oscar Wilde:
“I regard the theatre as the greatest of all art forms, the most immediate way in which a human being can share with another the sense of what it is to be a human being.” Bring your family and friends to Collected Works 2014 and experience being human.

adapted for the stage by leslie darbon
ollowing the huge success of The Mousetrap, Agatha Christie’s A Murder Is Announced, was the first of Christie’s works featuring the sensibly-heeled sleuth, Miss Marple to be dramatised. As she works tirelessly to solve the crime, it’s a night at the theatre that will have you guessing till the end. In her own inimitable style, Dame Agatha Christie has created an atmosphere of shuddering suspense within a brilliantly intricate plot where murder lurks around every corner... In an English village, you turn over a stone and have no idea what will crawl out. The villagers of Chipping Cleghorn, including Miss Marple, are agog with curiosity over an advertisement in the local gazette which reads: ‘A murder is announced and will take place on Friday 13th October, at Little Paddocks at 6.30pm.’ A childish practical joke or a hoax? Unable to resist the mysterious invitation, a crowd begins to gather at Little Paddocks when, at the appointed time, the lights go out, a gun is fired and a body falls… Can you guess whodunit?

ydney Theatre Company has embarked upon an historic endeavour with the Australian Defence Force to present this major new work, taking the words and experiences of servicemen and women to create a unique, uplifting and unforgettable event. Created from first-hand accounts, The Long Way Home dramatises the experiences of military service on operations in Iraq, Afghanistan and East Timor as well as humanitarian and disaster relief and protecting Australia’s borders. Director Stephen Rayne and multi-awardwinning writer Daniel Keene have shaped a powerful piece of theatre. Featuring performers drawn from military personnel recovering from physical and psychological injuries, and professional actors as part of a broader rehabilitation program. As we approach the centenary of the beginning of the Great War, it is time to take stock and explore the impact of war on the lives and minds of Australians.

THREE CHOREOGRAPHERS COME TOGETHER IN ONE CAPTIVATING TRIPLE BILL. ydney Dance Company returns to Canberra with a thrilling triple bill direct from its premiere season in Sydney. Bonachela, Godani and Orbazanek: three choreographers that have each carved their own, unique paths through the world of contemporary dance, pushing at the possibilities of movement with acclaimed, innovative works. Now, for the first time ever, they share the one canvas. Rafael Bonachela, Sydney Dance Company’s awardwinning artistic director, begins the night with the world premiere of his latest work, set to a score of Bach’s majestic Partitas for solo violin. Italian choreographer Jacopo Godani revisits his critically acclaimed 2011 composition Raw Models – a sinuous, sexy testament to the infinite malleability of the human body. Finally, former Chunky Move director Gideon Orbazanek creates a work for the entire company, showcasing once again his genius for composing movement pieces on a grand scale. Drawing together three distinct visions for dance, Interplay presents a triple bill of breathtaking ambition – a glorious salute to the state of contemporary dance, and an exhilarating reminder: sometimes the things that set us apart are the things that bind us closest together.

IN IMPLAUSIBLE TIMES, ONLY AN IMPLAUSIBLE MASTERPIECE WILL DO.
ONG before the 2013 Australian senate elections, Nikolai Gogol (The Diary of a Madman) invented one of the great comic premises of all time: what happens when a completely ordinary, perhaps even sub-ordinary guy finds himself, more or less by accident, enjoying the full benefits of public power? In a town somewhere – could be anywhere, really – news comes from the capital that someone seriously serious is coming to report on the state of this and that. Panic! And that indolent nobody Khlestakov finds himself the subject of all the fawning and excess of being somebody. The Government Inspector is Simon Stone and co’s reworking of Gogol’s piéce de résistance. Stone has assembled a brilliant ensemble cast including Emily Barclay, Gareth Davies and Greg Stone – first-class comic geniuses all as they cavort through Gogol’s great obstacle course of lunatic hilarity. Seriously though: doesn’t it take a nineteenthcentury Russian farce to make any sense of Australian public life today?

henry v B Y W I LL I A M SH A KES P E A R E
AMID A BOMBING RAID IN A WAR TORN CITY... omewhere in the world right now, a group of children are sheltering underground. To get through the night, the terrified kids put on an act of bravado – literally – and conjure up the heroics of King Henry V. This is his story... When Henry is manipulated by church advisors, taunted by French royalty and betrayed by English nobles, he has all the ammunition he needs to lash out and invade France. Or does he? Having executed conspirators, and vanquished enemy forces in Harfleur, Henry’s army is ‘weak and sickly’ as it staggers towards a showdown at Agincourt. The night before battle, the King endures a long dark night of the soul, where he hears first-hand about the fears and frailties of his outnumbered soldiers. But Henry has one last weapon up his sleeve: the power of words. And it may just be enough to save his men, his country and himself. Told through the prism of civilians caught in a 21st century conflict, Damien Ryan’s courageous production will expose the hidden layers within Henry V. From their hiding place underground, the children’s portrayal of Shakespeare’s classic will reveal how violence can be a rite of passage into manhood. On a broader level, it will be an unflinching examination of political spin, patriotism, religion, class, brotherhood and leaders of men.

Set within the stifling conventions of Victorian England, two young bachelors have taken to bending the rules and the truth to add a dash of excitement to their lives. THE CLUE IS IN THE TITLE, BUT THIS IS A DIFFERENT DREAM.
eter Evans will reawaken Shakespeare’s classic A Midsummer Night’s Dream with a breathless 90-minute production that amplifies the magic, mirth and mayhem. Love is in the air in Athens – and it’s contagious. Besides the royal wedding, which is just days away, there are young lovers dreaming of contented futures together. Hermia and Lysander are besotted with one another, while Helena adores Demetrius. The only snag is that Demetrius loves Hermia – and he’s got Hermia’s father on his side. So nobody is happy. (Shakespeare wasn’t kidding when he said the course of true love never ran smooth).
30-13 aug/sept the playhouse
Determined to be together, Hermia and Lysander meet in a moonlit forest, with plans to elope. Following hot on their heels is Demetrius, who in turn is pursued by a lovelorn Helena. But the young lovers are not alone in the forest. Nick Bottom and his hapless bunch of tradies have gathered to rehearse a play to be performed at the royal wedding. And, hidden from human eyes, a mischievous sprinkling of fairies are also in the forest that night. The three worlds collide in an explosion of comic confusion that throws the future of all the lovers into jeopardy.

Alain however, is more interested in his precious umbrella than romance. What ensues is a series of mischievous ‘arabesques’ as Lise works her way out of the Widow’s marriage contract and into the arms of her love-struck beau. A popular family favourite because of its simple, engaging story and colourful humour, this stunning new production, set in 1950’s rural France, will leave you applauding for more. La Fille mal gardée is a co-production of West Australian Ballet and Queensland Ballet.
