Australia’s first performing arts centre
Director’s Note Over the past year, we have been looking back on our 50 year history, digging up the stories and memories that have helped to form the Nation’s cultural landscape since The Canberra Theatre Centre – Australia’s first performing arts centre – opened in 1965. This year’s brochure allows you to take a stroll down memory lane with snippets of old posters featured inside the front and back covers. A fond memory for me in particular is Meryl Tankard’s Two Feet, a show I worked on backstage (all that water over the stage!!) about 25 years ago. We have seen some unforgettable talent grace our stages over the years and I am extremely proud of the high calibre of companies and performers we have brought together for a season worthy of Canberra Theatre Centre’s 50th year. The Theatre Centre opened in 1965 with a performance from The Australian Ballet, it’s fitting that the company are able to return in our 50th year to the same stage they
christened all those years ago, this time with Giselle. Collected Works 2015 also brings the best of the state theatre companies’ touring works, typified by Queensland Theatre Company’s Black Diggers, a timely new work that will resonate during the anniversary of the Great War. We also welcome back State Theatre Company of South Australia who blew us all away with the sell-out season of The Importance of Being Earnest in 2014. They are returning with an adaptation of Harold Pinter’s Betrayal starring Canberra’s own Alison Bell. Helpmann Award winning musical, Sweet Charity will open in February, straight from a season at the Sydney Opera House. I am so pleased we’re able to host such an acclaimed production that audiences would normally have to travel to Sydney or Melbourne for, right here in Canberra. And finally, we bring the big names and big laughs from Victoria when Noelene Brown and Darren Gilshenan star in the onstage remake of the classic TV series Mother and Son to kick off the season.
We’re 50 years young. It’s a huge year ahead at Canberra Theatre Centre. We’ve assembled a fantastic array of productions including a number of family-friendly shows and free Take Part experiences so everyone can join in our birthday celebrations. The theatre is yours after all and it wouldn’t have made it 50 without you. So, thank you.

4 7 February Geoffrey Atherden’s hit TV comedy LIVE on stage! Geoffrey Atherden penned the first episodes of Mother & Son in 1984 creating an instant classic! Now 30 years later he has done it again. Everyone’s favourite forgetful mum is back! From the creator of the hit TV series comes a brand new stage comedy featuring Maggie, Arthur and Robert in delicious form. This fresh, up-to-the-moment version of the beloved Logie Award-winning show finds longsuffering second son Arthur Beare hoping for the chance, at long last, to take a few weeks away and pursue a little fling with his new flame, Anita. However, his philandering brother,
Robert, and manipulative mother, Maggie, have other plans. Mother & Son reinvigorates a treasured Australian comedy icon with Atherden’s distinctive brand of acerbic wit, mixing together the sweet, the sharp, the savage and the sad in Maggie and Arthur’s complex, dysfunctional relationship. It’s an achingly funny play for anyone who’s part of a family but has caught themselves, even for a second, wishing that they weren’t. Noeline Brown and Darren Gilshenan take on the roles made famous by Ruth Cracknell and Garry McDonald in this nostalgic trip down loss-ofmemory lane from the series’ original writer.

Black Diggers
Some of the most powerful and moving live theatre you’re likely to see this year. ★★★★★ Daily Telegraph

8 25 28 MARCH The untold story of WW1’s Black Diggers remembered. One hundred years ago, a bullet from an assassin’s gun sparked a war that ignited the globe. Patriotic young men all over the world lined up to join the fight — including hundreds of Indigenous Australians. Shunned and downtrodden in their own country, Aboriginal men stepped up to enlist. Undaunted, these bold souls took up arms to defend the free world in its time of greatest need. For them, facing the horror of war on a Gallipoli beach was an escape from the shackles of racism at home, at a time when Aboriginal people stood by, segregated, unable to vote and unable to act as their children were ripped from them. When the survivors came back from the war, there was no
heroes’ welcome — just a shrug, and a return to drudgery and oppression. Black Diggers is the story of these men — a story of honour and sacrifice that has been covered up and almost forgotten. Directed by Wesley Enoch and written by Tom Wright, Black Diggers, grand in scale and scope, draws from in-depth interviews with the families of black diggers as well as conversations with veterans, historians and academics. Young men will step from the blank pages of history to share their compelling stories — and after the curtain falls, we will finally remember them.

8 18 APRIL All the world’s a stage. She loves him and he loves her. But she must dress as a he, and now there’s another her. Passionate and disarming, As You Like It is about a love so grand, our heroine is willing to break all the rules of romance to win the boy. Exiled to the Forest of Arden, Rosalind finds danger and mischief lurking behind every tree. She’s in love with Orlando, but must dress as the boy Ganymede. And so begins a gender bending courtship that shows that true love really does conquer all — even with a bit of cross dressing thrown in.
The beguiling and chaotic As You Like It — one of Shakespeare’s most beloved romantic comedies — will be directed by Co-Artistic Director, Peter Evans, fresh from a stellar year in 2014 (Tartuffe, The Dream, Intimate Letters). Featuring an inspiring cast, including John Bell as the melancholic Jaques, and the exuberant Zahra Newman as Rosalind. For anyone who’s ever risked it all for love, you’ll love As You Like It.

Quintett by William Forsythe Frame of Mind by Rafael Bonachela
30 APRIL 2 May A legendary force in australian contemporary dance. Sydney Dance Company’s 2015 season bursts into life with a powerful double bill — a showcase of deeply personal works from two acclaimed choreographic talents: living legend William Forsythe and Sydney Dance Company’s own Artistic Director, Rafael Bonachela. Appearing for its Australian premiere, Quintett is Forsythe’s tour de force and is a rarely seen piece that is delicate, tender and unsparing in its intensity. It’s recognised as his most poignant masterpiece. A beautiful tribute and glorious celebration of movement, light and life, Quintett showcases Forsythe’s arched and intricate choreography at its most athletic and arresting.
Bonachela’s brand new piece Frame of Mind brings a very different perspective to these eternal themes, set to a soundtrack of original compositions by Bryce Dessner (guitarist from The National) in a recording by the Kronos Quartet. Directing the full power of the talented Sydney Dance Company ensemble, Bonachela delivers a performance of rare force and intensity. Don’t miss this gripping evening of dance — a hymn to the joy and pain of life and a salute to the redemptive power of motion.

Storm Boy By Colin Thiele Adapted for the stage by Tom Holloway
A childhood favourite, Storm Boy is full of heart and soul. Crikey
3 6 June A cherished childhood favourite. Colin Thiele’s Storm Boy is one of Australia’s best loved stories. Rare a childhood goes by without a bedtime reading of this homegrown classic. Its evocation of a far-away windy beach and bittersweet message about growing up has enthralled children and adults alike for decades. Sydney Theatre Company and Perth’s Barking Gecko Theatre Company have created an absolutely captivating stage adaptation that is a thoughtful meditation on love, kindness and our connections to the people and world around us. Tom Holloway’s writing honours the spare, unadorned style of the original, while John Sheedy’s sensitive direction brings the characters, whether human or pelican, springing to life.
STARRING Jimi Bani, Peter O’Brien
A boy’s last childhood summer before beginning the long trek to adulthood is spent with his reclusive dad, Hideaway Tom. Storm Boy roams the savage landscape, navigating the waters and searching for debris and wildlife. Along the way he picks up some unlikely friends including the enigmatic Fingerbone Bill and a family of orphaned pelicans, including his favourite, Mr Percival. Whether you are an adult keen to revisit childhood memories or want to introduce a new generation of children to the story, this is your chance to savour the wonder of this uniquely Australian classic.

His brother and fellow gang member Dan, who Ned believes died at the siege of Glenrowan, visits disguised as a priest. He’s seeking Ned’s blessing and forgiveness before heading north to start a new life in Queensland. Brothers of the same blood and name, but with very different perspectives of their past. Life or death?

Betrayal By Harold Pinter
19 22 AUGUST I don’t think we don’t love each other. It’s 1977. Emma is married to Robert, a publisher. But for seven years, she’s been having an affair with Jerry, a literary agent and Robert’s best friend. Betrayal begins after the end of the affair, and pursues a gripping journey back to its very beginning. In a brilliant device, time is turned upside down as the play charts significant events in reverse and mines the shadowy aspects of a love affair and its fallout to devastating effect. Enthralling and intricately layered, the play provides a ruthless exploration of the complexity of the human heart.
Winner of 2005’s Nobel Prize for Literature, Harold Pinter is famous for probing the darker sides of human emotion. Betrayal is rightly considered to be one of his great masterpieces, showcasing his trademark wit and yearning. 18 Ghosts in the Scheme Written AND directed by Scott Rankin
2 5 september EVERY town has a history. Cooma has always been a gateway to pleasure, and in the 1950s it played host to an extraordinary influx of people from around the world, escaping their past, to work on the Snowy Mountains Scheme. They brought with them ideas, espresso, food, music, dancing and optimism for love and life in the New World.
Actors Lex Marinos, Anne Grigg and Bruce Myles each embody Snowy locals, weaving a story of three complex friendships, full of the secrets, loves and twists of fate that so-called ‘ordinary’ lives embrace. As life’s endgame approaches, these characters can enjoy passive acceptance or relish fighting the inevitable.
Set upon a backdrop of the town’s rich underbelly and featuring a soundtrack played live on stage by Mikelangelo and the Black Sea Gentlemen, Ghosts in the Scheme explores the complex friendship of three of these residents.
Expect a night of brilliance with this new, original work from BighART, the company that has continually delivered award-winning theatre including Namatjira, Ngapartji Ngapartji and Hipbone Sticking Out.

15 26 september There ain’t no party like the Wharf Revue party. In 2015, The Wharf Revue turns 15. Or is it 16? Everyone is getting too old to care about birthdays, but we do care about satire. So, once more unto the political breach step Jonathan Biggins, Drew Forsythe and Phillip Scott with their signature style of seriously side-splitting satirical silliness and musical mayhem. As ever, there will be up-to-the-second sketches on whichever cultural malaise or governmental gaffe is news of the day. But no birthday party is complete without a dose of nostalgia, so you can also count on a parade of past indignitaries — a who’s who of 21st century embarrassments,
from the politicians to the celebrities. Who will make the cut? Who has the numbers in the caucus room? It’s anyone’s guess.

A family torn apart by murder, a son burdened with the truth and the task of avenging his father, and a country on the brink of war. Anguish, passion and desperation collide in this tragic telling of Hamlet, the Prince of Denmark who is tormented by the impossibility of his dilemma, and who remains one of theatre’s most fascinating characters.
Damien Ryan, returning to Bell Shakespeare following the critically acclaimed Henry V in 2014, will deliver a new production of Hamlet, infused with the passion, contemplation and emotion that Shakespeare’s compelling poetry cries out for. Josh McConville (Griffin Theatre Company’s The Boys and Sydney Theatre Company’s Mojo) and Matilda Ridgway (Sport For Jove’s A Doll’s House) will delve into the depths of the complexity, violence, philosophical reflection, madness and maddening seduction of Hamlet.

22 11 21 FEBRUARY Musical theatre doesn’t come any better than this ... A production in which I simply can’t find a fault. — Stage Whispers If you believe in something hard enough, then eventually it has to come true, right? Charity Hope Valentine is the eternal optimist — a worldview that puts her distinctly at odds with her co-workers in a seedy, run-down dance hall. Dancing with man after man to pay her rent, she dreams of finally being whisked out of there and rescued by love. But can Charity wish her way into making love come true? Debuting on Broadway in 1966, Sweet Charity features a memorable music score by Cy Coleman and Dorothy Fields including major hits like Big Spender, If My Friends Could See Me Now, and The Rhythm of Life. A combination of Neil Simon’s razor-sharp script and Bob
STARRING Verity Hunt-Ballard, Martin Crewes, Debora Krizak
Fosse’s direction and choreography were largely responsible for the musical’s distinctive and lasting identity.
DIRECTOR Dean Bryant
This award-winning production of Sweet Charity was nominated for eight Helpmann Awards and won three including Best Female Actor in a Musical for Verity Hunt-Ballard, Best Direction of a Musical for Dean Bryant and Best Choreography in a Musical for Andrew Hallsworth.
MUSICAL DIRECTOR Andrew Worboys
Sweet Charity’s high-energy choreography and sharp-witted dialogue makes it the perfect night of musical theatre.

Season diary During 2015, we have partnered with several National institutions such as the Australian Parliament House and Canberra Museum and Gallery, who will be hosting several Take Part events at their venue. We encourage you to come along to the events as they offer fascinating insights into the making of many of this year’s productions. Were possible, these activities are provided free to Season Ticket holders.
The power of performing arts is increased when patrons engage actively with the stories above and beyond their experience in the auditorium. To this end, the Canberra Theatre Centre is committed to providing a range of activities under the Take Part banner that enables you to do just that. The diary lists all the pre-show forums and post show Q&A’s that we have already arranged at print date. Over the course of 2015 we hope to schedule many more activities related to these shows.
The best way to stay in touch with these events is to become an Inbox eNews recipient via our website canberratheatrecentre.com.au, like us on Facebook or follow us on Twitter.
