DIRECTOR’S NOTE

WELCOME As we usher in the 2017 season, a curated selection of the greatest works touring the nation, I am inspired and excited by what I see. This act of telling our stories, connecting with each other through the strength of our shared human experience, is what drives us in the arts, and what connects us as communities.

OUR ROLE IN THE CBR COMMUNITY During 2015/16 we delivered some great results for the Canberra community when we engaged with over a quarter of a million people at 443 performances, delivering over $6 million to the visitor economy and over $5 million in wages to 180 local team members. We hosted 13,000+ students from 134 different schools, 43,600 people attended free or low cost events, we spent $27,000 on 380 tickets in our Social Capital Initiative. We thank all those producers and investors (government and private) who took a chance on us. We can do more for our community and I encourage you to complete our surveys and guide us in delivering what you value. Speaking of taking a chance, I couldn’t be happier to have announced MAMMA MIA! for 2017. That Louise Withers, Linda Bewick and Michael Coppel are commencing this national tour in Canberra is indicative of their faith in us. They, like us, see a future in which the nation’s capital is included in the tour schedule for the biggest national and international shows. It’s a future that we at Canberra Theatre Centre are working towards, and one that we couldn’t dream of without the incredible support shown to us by the Cultural Facilities Corporation, Chief Minister, Arts Minister, and Visit Canberra. The collective confidence shown in us and our 2015/16 results affirms that the Canberra Theatre Centre is OPEN FOR SHOW BUSINESS.

THE SEASON The 2017 season opens with Ladies in Black, Tim Finn’s (Split Enz, Crowded House) Helpmann award winner. This boutique tour, direct to us from Sydney Festival, takes us on a journey through the lives of the employees of F.G Goodes’ department store. Caught at the crossroads between the stuffy repression of the 1950s and the glorious liberation of the 1960s, this colourful future classic will go down in history. Another highlight from the State Theatre Company of South Australia is an adaptation of a book that generations have studied in school, myself included, a story that has more resonance with each passing year. 1984 is an eerie example of classic work representing actual living futures, and one that is delivered by one of the most creative companies operating in Australian Theatre. The season closes with MAMMA MIA! produced by one of the world’s most accomplished producers, Australia’s very own Louise Withers. This fully professional musical tours the capital cities from its opening here in Canberra so we see this production first. I encourage you all to join us for the 2017 journey. Thank you

Bruce Carmichael Director Canberra Theatre Centre

A QUEENSLAND THEATRE PRODUCTION

LADIES IN BLACK

A CELEBRATION OF GLAMOUR, GOWNS AND GROWING UP The swankiest new home-grown musical since Priscilla was queen, Ladies in Black is a whirling, toe-tapping trip back in time. Based on the novel by Madeleine St John, this uniquely Australian fashion-forward fairy tale has all the shine and sparkle of Broadway.

With tunes by Tim Finn (Split Enz and Crowded House) and costumes by Gabriela Tylesova (The Rabbits), woven together by director Simon Phillips (Priscilla Queen of the Desert, the Musical, Dream Lover, Muriel’s Wedding – The Musical), Ladies in Black has already wowed audiences in Brisbane and Melbourne. Now it’s Canberra’s turn to get frocked up for the most alluring little number of the season.

WINNER

Sydney, 1959 – a city at the crossroads between the stuffy repression of the 1950s and the glorious liberation of the 1960s … Bright-eyed, bookish school leaver Lisa steps through the doors of the city’s most prestigious department store. RICHARD IS HIDEOUS. AND RICHARD WAS BORN KNOWING THAT HE WOULD ONE DAY BE A RULER. His hunchbacked deformity masks his seething malevolence. His brutal mind breeds brutal times when not even children are safe. Award-winning actor Kate Mulvany (Macbeth and Julius Caesar) will embody one of the most ambitious and gleefully amoral villains ever written.

First performed around 1593, Richard 3 is the portrait of a Machiavellian psychopath, a cold-blooded and dastardly manipulator who slaughters his family, marries his victim’s widow and eventually betrays his allies, all in his quest to become king. Peter Evans, Artistic Director of Bell Shakespeare, continues to daringly reimagine Shakespeare’s works with a boldness and unexpectedness that will leave audiences breathless. The blood-soaked and naked ambition of Richard 3, who leaves scores dead and only the ghosts to whisper the truth, will be a truly thrilling night at the theatre. This dark and visceral production is not to be missed.

AUSTRALIA’S CHARISMATIC JOHN WATERS IS THE SHOCK JOCK FROM HELL

A SYDNEY THEATRE COMPANY PRODUCTION

DON’T FOLLOW THE STORY. BE THE STORY. John Behan is a talkback radio host with the city in the palm of his hand. He fills the airwaves with easy answers, hard facts be damned. But, yesterday, he overstepped the mark. Today, a trial-by-media threatens to get out of control. Locking himself in his studio and broadcasting live, John Behan is not going to go quietly, even if a life is on the line. Across town, the hunt is on for a sensational story. One that reveals the truth? Perhaps. One that keeps journalists in a job? More likely.

In Talk, writer and director Jonathan Biggins (The Wharf Revue) sets his eyes squarely on modern journalism, social media and the 24-hour news cycle. When everyone has a megaphone, who’s listening? The charismatic John Waters, fresh from a villainous turn on ABC’s Rake, and as the womanising charmer Darcy Proudman in 10’s Offspring, is back with Sydney Theatre Company for the first time in over a decade. With him is a wonderful cast, including Peter Kowitz (ABC’s Janet King and Crownies), Helen Christinson (The 39 Steps), Valerie Bader (The Wharf Revue) and Andrew Tighe (Much Ado About Nothing and The Hansard Monologues). You’ll want to tune in.

CORANDERRK

A GRIPPING FIGHT FOR RIGHTS THAT SHOULD HAVE CHANGED HISTORY ‘We will show the country that it will work.’ In 1881, the men and women of Coranderrk Aboriginal Reserve had a simple and revolutionary goal: to continue the brilliant experiment in self-determination they had pioneered on the scrap of country left to them. But the law said they needed permission. They went head-to-head with the Aboriginal Protection Board at a Victorian Parliamentary Inquiry to be allowed to continue.

THE PLAYHOUSE 14-15 JUNE

CORANDERRK recreates compelling history on stage. It revives the voices of all those, black and white, who fought for a better pact between the country’s oldest and newest inhabitants. This special production pays tribute to the resilience and adaptability of a people who rose to the challenge despite the odds. CORANDERRK is a collaboration between leading Indigenous and non-Indigenous artists, researchers, education experts and community members. The production aims to encourage a shared understanding of the past between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people. The multi award winning Trevor Jamieson (Cleverman, The Secret River, Namatjira, Ngaparti {One}) is charismatic and moving in the lead role.

April, 1984. 13:00. Comrade 6079, Winston Smith, thinks a thought, starts a diary, and falls in love. But Big Brother is always watching. Set in a world where an invasive government keeps a malevolently watchful eye on its citizens, this radical and much-lauded staging explores surveillance, identity and why Orwell’s vision of the future is as relevant now as ever.

Produced by UK theatrical innovators Headlong along with Nottingham Playhouse and the Almeida Theatre, this production of George Orwell’s dystopian classic came roaring onto the stage in 2013 and since then it has become an international phenomenon. Seen by over a quarter of a million people worldwide, it has enjoyed three hugely successful West End seasons as well as an international tour including a sold-out season at the Melbourne Festival. Now with a brand new Australian cast, don’t miss one of the 20th century’s greatest and most chilling novels given new life by some of British theatre’s fastest rising creative stars.

BENNELONG ARTISTRY, PASSION AND PHYSICALITY In 2017, Bangarra presents a brand new contemporary dance work that will leave you astonished by Australia’s history, choreographed by Artistic Director Stephen Page. Woollarawarre Bennelong was a senior man of the Eora, from the Port Jackson area in Sydney. In a tumultuous time of Australia’s history, Bennelong and his community left us with a legacy that transcended ‘first contact’.

Inspired by true events, this theatrical dance work highlights the extraordinary curiosity and diplomacy that led an Aboriginal community to survive a clash of cultures, contributing to the establishment of positive relationships between the Eora and the British, for a serene future. This brand new work is Bangarra at its best. In a unique Australian dance language, the company embraces history – celebrating the continuation of life and culture with the power, artistry, passion and physicality of the country’s most acclaimed dancers.

The unstoppable comedic minds of Jonathan Biggins, Drew Forsythe and Phillip Scott have been keeping the nation’s political and cultural leaders on their metaphorical toes since before Sydney hosted the Olympics.

In 2017, they return with an all-new, up-to-the-minute, fibre-to-the-node dose of side-splitting sketches and rib-tickling songs. (BYO hyphens.) From the highs to the lows, from the good to the bad to the ugly, this will be a parade of the year’s most memorable characters and the moments they’d prefer to forget.
