In 2011, you have the opportunity to share a room with Max Gillies, Reg Livermore, Nancye Hayes, Jacqueline McKenzie, Kate Mulvaney, Casey Donovan, Trevor Jamieson and Canberra’s own Blazey Best. You can explore rooms designed by John Bell, Pamela Rabe, Stephen Page, Rafael Bonachela and Ezio Bosso, Wesley Enoch and Lucy Guerin. You can flick the light on and illuminate such stunning stories as those of Indigenous watercolour artist Albert Namatjira, and the deeply personal stories of the Bangarra dancers. We have rooms that will make you believe you are on the unforgiving east coast of England, in a dainty pub in the middle of Dublin or back in the official tally room on Election Day 2010. It’s a full house at Canberra Theatre Centre in 2011, and we’ve kept a seat just for you.

The Sapphires The hottest soul music in the jungle of Vietnam! 1969. Vietnam. Bombs are dropping and the world is exploding in protest. Back at the Tiki Club in St Kilda, four Koori sisters from country Victoria catch the eye of a big-city talent scout with their Supremes cover group. For the McCrae girls, the realisation of a lifelong dream to perform overseas isn’t quite what they had in mind. Instead of fame, fortune and glamorous international careers, these Koori divas find themselves performing for the troops on the front line. The Sapphires tells the true story of The Sapphires as they shake it for the troops and push sibling love to its limits. Wesley Enoch’s remarkable production, described by The Australian as ‘high energy, bedazzling entertainment’, is a steamy and swinging medley of the highs and lows of family, love, war and the hottest soul music in the jungle of Vietnam! Get ready for a night of hits that defined a generation – from Baby Love and Chain of Fools to Stop! In the Name of Love. Photo: Michael Corridore – Original cast.

ARTS PROJECTS AUSTRALIA PRESENTS GÚNA NUA THEATRE COMPANY
Little Gem Three women, three generations, one play of pure honesty
1–5 MARCH THE PLAYHOUSE WRITER
Elaine Murphy
A heartwarming Irish play that burst into life at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2009 and later played a sold-out run off-Broadway is the second treasure in the Season 2011. Little Gem stars a talented cast from Ireland’s Gúna Nua Theatre and features a series of hilarious and uplifting moments in the lives of three generations of Dublin women. Kay’s got an itch that Gem can’t scratch (but maybe Kermit can) … Lorraine attacks a customer at work and her boss wants her to see a psychiatrist … Amber has bad indigestion and the sambucas aren’t getting rid of it. If all that wasn’t bad enough, Little Gem makes his presence felt and life is never the same again.
DIRECTOR
Paul Meade RUNNING TIME
100 minutes, no interval WARNINGS
Contains occasional coarse language, some adult themes
Little Gem has played sell-out seasons across the globe and has all the traits of a true Irish character: talkative, inquisitive, funny, philosophical, honest, and above all, great company.

MALTHOUSE THEATRE
A Commercial Farce ‘History always repeats itself twice: first time as tragedy, second time as farce’ KARL MARX Bill drives a clapped out ’68 Jag and wears second-hand clothes. He’s an experienced theatre director on the verge of a nervous breakdown. There’s less than 24 hours until the curtains go up and this production is unravelling … fast. Enter Jules, the latest fresh-faced television star of Murder Squad. He’s the big name that’s going to sell the tickets. Without him the show is doomed. But when Jules fails to perform the simplest of acting tasks, Bill’s raison d’être becomes teaching his young pupil the very meaning of farce. A Commercial Farce is biting comedy at its best. Expect slapstick, running gags, misunderstandings and an inability to communicate the simplest of messages. It’s one big, complicated dog’s breakfast, and it must nonetheless unfold with blind precision. Director Aidan Fennessy revels in Houghton’s script, delivering a production that fuses physical humour, sexual innuendo and transgressive behaviour with an almighty bang.

Between Breath & Form
World Premiere Tour Season One of the contemporary dance world’s greatest collaborations In 2011, the company returns to Canberra with a stunning double bill that once again merges Bonachela’s choreographic talent with composer Ezio Bosso’s raw and potent string-based scores. The fantastic collaboration that delivered last year’s we unfold returns. In 6 Breaths, Ezio and Rafael focus on the act of breathing as the spirit of life. ‘The first breath is the life breath; the second is breathlessness – out of breath; the third, the crying breath or where breath is interrupted by emotion; the fourth is in the same breath; the fifth breath is a whisper – under one’s breath – and the sixth is last breath.’

BELL SHAKESPEARE
Much Ado About Nothing A trip down the aisle is never a straight one Claudio and Hero are deeply in love. Beatrice and Benedick are deeply in denial. All is well. Then Claudio humiliates Hero. Hero has a fainting attack and pretends to die. And Beatrice and Benedick join forces with a vengeance. And that’s just up to the interval. If it sounds complicated, well, that’s love for you – a trip down the aisle is never a straight one. John Bell directs this exuberant comedy with a lightness of touch and a fantastic cast including Blazey Best, Toby Schmitz, Max Gillies and Tony Llewellyn-Jones. When you delve into other people’s relationships you soon learn the real cost of commitment – what we will do and what we won’t do for that capricious and often elusive state of love.

In the Next Room, or the vibrator play
BY SARAH RUHL
The perfect remedy for illness – just lift your petticoats ladies! For the wife of eminent scientist and inventor Dr Givings, the vagaries of the medical field have never held much allure. Until now. Unable to breastfeed her baby and desperately lonely, Mrs Givings seeks companionship in two of her husband’s patients – and soon discovers the truth of what goes on at his practice. What exactly is the revolutionary treatment he administers to females suffering from hysterical disorders? And why is his important medical invention called The Chattanooga Vibrator? Nominated for the Pulitzer Prize and a Tony Award, In the Next Room, or the vibrator play was a resounding hit when it opened on Broadway in 2009, consolidating playwright Sarah Ruhl’s reputation as one of America’s most exciting contemporary writers. This Australian premiere features an outstanding cast headed by Hollywood star Jacqueline McKenzie. In the Next Room, or the vibrator play has infinitely more to it than primitive vibrators. It is sharp, witty and bursting with charisma: an utterly beguiling play about love, longing, science and invention. Photo: Mike Newling.

‘I find this story constantly relevant. We witness the original pre-emptive strike and the irony of the “honourable assassination” with all the carnage that a power vacuum creates. Julius Caesar is a play that is never out of date and even today feels relentlessly modern.’ PETER EVANS, DIRECTOR

BELL SHAKESPEARE
Julius Caesar To see the future, one must only look to the past Like many who came before him and after him, Julius Caesar had the support of the people but the loathing of the players. They conspired. They persuaded. They whispered it was for the good of the country. All they needed to succeed was Brutus. Poor patriotic Brutus. He was like a son to Caesar and a poster boy for the republic. But not even a front-man of such unimpeachable integrity could avert the total and utter disaster their daggers set in motion.

Peter Evans, Bell Shakespeare’s new Associate Artistic Director, takes this momentous piece of Roman history and transports it to the corridors of backroom politics. This time, when Caesar gets the axe, it’s the media who roar like an angry mob. This sharp political drama puts friendship to the test and reveals a stark contrast between our intentions and our actions. With Alex Menglet as Caesar and Kate Mulvany as the conniving Cassius, we go behind the scenes as yet another leader is forced from office.

Belong If you thought you’d seen the best of Bangarra Dance Theatre, think again In 2011, the fire, the spirit and the soul of Bangarra returns. In Belong – a brand new double bill – we visit the very core of the Bangarra dancers themselves, tracing their histories across our vast country from the Kimberley to the Torres Strait. Artistic Director Stephen Page will create a new work aptly titled ID, exploring the stories of Bangarra’s dancers, and rekindling memories of their families, their bloodlines and their places of origin. Following the success of 2007’s Emeret Lu, company choreographer and dancer Elma Kris’ new contemporary work, About, will be inspired by the cultures and experiences of the peoples of Saibai Island. Bangarra Dance Theatre is fuelled by the spirit, energy and inspiration derived from the culture, values and traditions of Indigenous Australians.

Namatjira Created by Scott Rankin
The grandchildren of Albert Namatjira re-tell the story of his remarkable life Indigenous artist Albert Namatjira’s achingly beautiful watercolours introduced Australian suburbia to the exquisite beauty of our central desert heartland. In a similar way, the sweeping narrative of Namatjira acts as a window through which we see ourselves, and our nation, as clearly as the landscapes Albert Namatjira gave us. Starring Trevor Jamieson – who last gave a breathtaking performance in Ngapartji Ngapartji – Namatjira captures the intense beauty, depth, opportunism, mateship and injustice that has shaped our country. Before our eyes, the grandchildren of Albert Namatjira – third generation watercolour artists – assist with the re-telling of his life, filling the stage with a huge landscape drawing of their desert country. Namatjira is more than a night at the theatre: it is an experience of art, live on stage.
