Canberra Weekly contents 08 january 2015
This week...
Welcome to our first edition of the year. Although we’re already into the second week of 2015, it’s still timely to wish all of our readers a Happy Nude Year – that time when you pause and take a good look at yourself, get rid of old baggage, shed unnecessary layers, strip back to your essential being, reveal your true self… Oh wait, that’s Happy New Year. Thanks to those dear readers who have contacted us recently to say how much they enjoy this column, particularly the final paragraph which includes my ‘reasons to be grateful’ each week. Conscious gratitude is a practice I adopted many years back and it’s changed my life, for the better. Taking time daily to reflect on at least one ‘thing’ for which I feel grateful that day enhances my experience of life and makes me feel rich beyond monetary abundance. Often it’s the little things I might otherwise easily take for granted. Reasons to be grateful this past week include refreshing dips in the ocean, an early morning beach walk, sand between my toes, going somewhere I had never been before, catching up with friends, walking my dog around local waterways abundant with birdlife, and returning to work with a great company and great company. Here’s to a great – and grateful – year ahead.

LUCY ZELIC RELISHES ASIAN CUP ACTION
Football runs in the family for Lucy Zelic but while her brothers plied their trade from the middle of the field, Lucy found her calling as a passionate football journalist.

ne of the media ambassadors for the AFC Asian Cup 2015, the role completes a family double act with brother Ned also appointed as a special Canberra football ambassador. “We are going to see some fantastic standard and quality of football and players,” Lucy says, admitting there is a “certain level of expectation on the Socceroos to do well and even win it”. “As a fan as well in many respects… I will be rooting for the Socceroos.” The younger sister of former football players Ivan and Ned Zelic, Lucy says it was her relationship with Ivan which helped influence her career. “Ivan and I were very close and I was his sidekick and went wherever he went which was often to football… that love, it really just developed and stayed the same over time. I was fortunate that I was able to change my passion into a career,” she says. It was an epiphany moment while overseas attending a Bundesliga match that sealed her decision – “walking into that stadium and feeling that passion reinforced it was something I wanted to do”. And while she describes her transition to sports journalist as an “almost natural progression”, she admits her sister “isn’t really into football at all”. Lucy studied at the University of Canberra and joined SBS in 2013 as one of the faces of the Hyundai A-League Live and currently hosts Extra Time on SBS 2 as well as reporting from the pitch every Friday night during SBS’s live Hyundai A-League matches. She also appears as a sports presenter on SBS World News and has hosted the UEFA Champions League.
In 2014, Lucy also had the opportunity to host the 2014 FIFA World Cup matches from the Sydney studios, her first World Cup for SBS. In terms of comparing the World Cup to the Asian Cup, Lucy says “it’s apples and oranges really”. “The World Cup, just for having hosted that was such a big achievement,” she says “It is arguably the biggest tournament in the world and it was a big responsibility which I really thrived on and enjoyed… The World Cup is the best in the world while the Asian Cup is the best in the Asian Federation.” She says the importance of the Asian Cup is that it is on Australian soil and is likely the “biggest football tournament that will hit Australia’s shores”. Locally, Canberra will host six group games and a quarter-final with all matches to be held at GIO Stadium Canberra. The teams to play in Canberra include the Korea Republic, Oman, UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, China PR, DPR Korea, Iraq and Palestine. “Ultimately that we have games including a quarter-final is impressive for Canberra,” Lucy says. “My message to the public is to go out to the games and support the teams because this is the biggest thing to hit Australian shores from a football perspective and you want to be able to look back and say I was there and part of it.” The Socceroos will kick-off the tournament against Kuwait in Melbourne on 9 January. Canberra’s first match is scheduled for 10 January between Korea Republic and Oman. The final is set for Sydney’s Stadium Australia on 31 January. - Allison Redman

news Katy Gallagher set for Senate CT Labor’s Administrative Committee has endorsed Katy Gallagher to replace Senator Kate Lundy as the Labor Senator for the ACT. “At the close of nominations, our General Returning Officer had received a single nomination, from Ms Gallagher, therefore she has been declared elected,” ACT Labor Secretary Matt Byrne said. Ms Gallagher formally resigned from the ACT Legislative Assembly on Tuesday 23 December. The Legislative Assembly is expected to nominate Ms Gallagher to the Senate to coincide with Senator Lundy’s retirement. Meanwhile, the name of the candidate elected to replace Ms Gallagher in the ACT Legislative Assembly should be known by the middle of January. Legislative Assembly vacancies
are filled by conducting a count-back of those ballot papers that elected the vacating member. In effect, those electors who voted for Ms Gallagher determine her replacement. ACT Electoral Commissioner, Phillip Green, said candidates who unsuccessfully stood in the Molonglo electorate at the 2012 election are invited to contest the vacancy. Applications from candidates must be received by 12 noon on Thursday 15 January. “At 12.30pm on Thursday 15 January 2015 the names of the candidates contesting the vacancy will be officially declared,” Mr Green said. “A computer counting program will then be used to determine which candidate will be elected to the Assembly to replace Ms Gallagher.” It is expected that the official declaration of the result will take place on Friday 16 January.
Visitors spend big in the city
Free camel rides were popular during Christmas in the City.
With camels, trampolines, entertainment and a world record Christmas lights display, Christmas in the City 2014 proved a huge success. By close of business Monday 22 December, Canberra CBD Limited estimated that visitors to Christmas in the City spent over $6 million in Canberra’s CBD and over $538,000 outside the CBD. Visitors were from 62 different postcodes with those people visiting Canberra including 60 per cent from
NSW, 14 per cent from Queensland, 10 per cent from SA, 3 per cent from WA and 4 per cent from overseas. The camels were once again a hit with 2,262 people taking a free ride. The SIDS and Kids ACT Christmas Lights attracted over 200,000 visitors with the organisation hoping to release the amount raised from the event later this week. Adding to their tally is over $600 raised by 15-year-old Kristina Sukloska who attends Telopea Park High School and is undertaking a Personal Project which goes for nine months over a two-year period. For her project, Kristina selected nail design and received permission to set up a table at the lights display where she painted people’s nails for an additional donation. Aiming to raise $500, she raised over $600 after volunteering for six nights.

DOGUE advertising moment
DOGUE groomers Sarah Bunt (left) and Bec Zagas (right) keep things calm and relaxed, focusing on providing great advice to dog owners and keeping their furry companions happy and stress-free.
The DOGUE shopfront offers a great range of premium quality and unique dog products.
DOGUE Boutique and Spa opens in Canberra
If you have a furry friend in need of a trim, or someone to keep a watchful and friendly eye for a day, DOGUE Gungahlin is the best destination for your lovable pooch. OGUE Boutique and Spa offers exceptional care for dogs big and small. Franchisee owner Tania Collyer and her expert team of groomers say word is getting out about Canberra’s first DOGUE Boutique and Spa and the special services on offer. “We were fully booked out for our first week when we opened on the 1st of December and now we are getting so many more people coming in – some for grooming services, others to drop their dog off for the day or just have a shop around. I’ve found that the people who like to use our day care service are office workers, people travelling through Canberra and dog owners who are renovating their home because some dogs don’t cope well with loud noises of construction sites,” Tania says. When it comes to dog grooming, DOGUE offers nail clipping, washing, drying, hair trimming and styled trims in addition to coat dyeing, de-matting, speciality shampoo, scissoring and teeth cleaning. “When people book their dogs in, our groomers will ask a couple of questions to get to know a bit about your dog, such as its breed, temperament and what type of look they’re after,” she says.
If you’re interested in dropping your dog off to day care, DOGUE opens at 7.30am and closes at 6pm for your convenience. Dogs are treated to quiet time and play time, regular walks and toilet breaks. Day care is $55 for a whole day, $35 for a half day or you can pay by the hour. The DOGUE shopfront offers the best quality and most unique dog products around – everything from health and beauty to custommade bedding, toys, accessories, outdoor gear, food and treats. DOGUE is the only supplier of ZiwiPeak dog food in the ACT and also stocks the popular Canidae range. All food products at DOGUE are grain-free to help keep your dog as healthy as possible, plus the natural range of shampoo and conditioners are free from any harsh chemicals. Tania recommends that customers who want to start having their dog professionally groomed should consider introducing their dog to the environment while they are still young. “Once puppies have had their shots they can come in. It helps them to feel less anxious or nervous if owners bring them in just for a wash and dry early on, as this will make them more familiar with the noises of the hair dryer
and clipping tools,” she says. “Then at the end of it all, we pop a bandana or a cute bow on the dogs and they are ready to go home. We focus on dogs, their happiness and keeping things stress-free.” Your pooch will look doggone dapper after a visit to DOGUE Gungahlin. Special offer: For a limited time, DOGUE Gungahlin is offering first time customers 20 per cent off grooming or day care services. Bookings can be made up to a year in advance. Gift vouchers are also available. To make a booking or enquiry, call the friendly team at DOGUE on 6154 8350 or visit www.dogue.com.au for more information.

news he Australian War Memorial, in partnership with the ACT Government, plans to commemorate the Centenary of Anzac and the First World War through major events and activities on a grand scale. AWM Director Dr Brendan Nelson says he feels “very proud to have this national institution that can reflect the stories of countless Australians who have served their country”. “We will commit the same amount of funding from our budget to match that of the Government’s towards our plans for the 2015 centenary commemoration. We will be looking at actively promoting events, and we have three large objects from the First World War that will be on display to the public and another key First World War gallery that will be open to the public
from February,” Dr Nelson said. The ACT Government is investing $300,000 from its Special Event Fund in marketing the AWM’s commemorative events throughout 2015. Projects to be featured as a part of the commemoration program are a visitor audio experience with multi-lingual options, live broadcasts, the installation of an army dog and handler sculpture, signature artworks, musical performances, poetry recitals and light projections on the building. Dr Nelson said the Memorial plans to open its doors to the public at night for people to gain another perspective while enjoying music and poetry. “Anzac Day will be our biggest yet with an expected 50,000 people attending our dawn service, and we have major events planned for Lone
Pine and Remembrance Day. This year’s commemorative program will turbocharge our efforts in encouraging people to come to visit Canberra,” Dr Nelson said. ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr said he hoped the AWM’s program would not only attract interstate and international visitors, but encourage local residents to actively participate. “Trip Advisor voted the place the number one attraction in the ACT and also all of Australia. People have the opportunity to have a compelling experience because the permanent collection is always rotating, there’s always something different, and that is all the reason you need to come and visit the Memorial again,” he said. “The resurgence in people interested in our nation’s history

news f improving your fitness is part of your New Year’s resolutions, University of Canberra assistant professor in sports studies, Dr Kate Pumpa, says starting small and progressing is the key to achieving fitness and health goals. “If people set New Year’s resolutions then I recommend they set achievable goals, something realistic and feasible. If you set small goals and progress from there, it will prevent you from injuring yourself. For example, taking a 30-minute walk every day and you progress with different courses such as a route with hills or steps,” she says. With 63 per cent of ACT adults being overweight or obese and 50 per cent being insufficiently active, the ACT Government created the Healthy Weight Action Plan that

allows Canberrans to access health programs and additional resources online for children and adults. “Also, you can use motivational tools like pedometers, a training calendar, having an exercise partner, enrolling in a team sport or visiting a fitness facility. Some people like to identify a particular event that’s coming up, like the Colour Run, and aim to be fit when the event rolls around,” Dr Pumpa says. “Riding a bike or taking the bus not only reduces travelling and parking costs but will also mean you get exercise by cycling or walking. And for those of you in an office space, instead of taking the elevator, take the stairs, or that person in the office you need to speak to – walk to their desk and have a chat instead of emailing,” she says. This will be the first major redevelopment of the City South precinct for some years, and the scale of the redevelopment is subject to detailed master planning currently being undertaken. The new owners plan to create a bookend between the retail and dining hub at one end of City Walk and the new casino and entertainment precinct at the other. Aquis plans to commence redevelopment as soon as possible with a view to completion by around the end of 2016. The casino will continue to operate under the existing management team.

Condon called up for PM’s XI clash Eighteen-year-old Matt Condon is primed to make the most of his opportunity after being named as part of the Prime Minister’s XI side to play England at Manuka Oval on Wednesday 14 January. Condon, who has been in excellent form this season with both the ACT Comets and in grade cricket in Sydney, hopes his recent form translates out on the Manuka Oval pitch. “It’s just the opportunity to perform and push for higher honours,” he said. “Playing against quality international opposition is a stepping stone for my career.” And Condon is well aware of the benefits playing in the PM’s XI match can have, referencing Jono Dean who “set the standard” when he made a half century and is now contracted to the Adelaide Strikers.
The match will be the biggest stage Condon has played on. He is hoping to “capitalise on the good conditions” at Manuka Oval with the bat. He is also looking forward to the opportunity of playing alongside Mike Hussey who will be captaining the PM’s XI team. “I’ve looked up to Hussey the last 10 years and I hope to have a chat with him and find ways to improve my game,” he said. The PM’s XI side also features 18-year-old Jake Doran, who will take on the wicketkeeper role, in addition to Cameron Bancroft, Jason Behrendorff, Pat Cummins, Peter Handscomb, Simon Mackin, Glenn Maxwell, David Moody, Lega Siaka and the ACT’s Mac Wright as 12th man. National Selection Panel Chairman Rod Marsh said “this match is a special fixture on the
Australian cricketing calendar and a magnificent tradition. Mike Hussey will lead the team well and is a great drawcard, as is local boy Jason Behrendorff, who has been in fantastic form this summer across all three formats”. “We are also excited about 22-year-old batsman Lega Siaka, contracted to the Melbourne Renegades in the KFC T20 Big Bash League,” Marsh said. “Lega scored a century for Papua New Guinea in their first ever One-Day International series in November when they defeated Hong Kong… his selection highlights PNG’s growth as a cricketing nation.” Tickets for the PM’s XI match are available via Ticketek. The match will be live streamed on www.cricket.com.au - Allison Redman

FOX & BOW BRINGS CAFÉ CHARM TO FARRER Suburbia is dishing up a dining revival with Fox & Bow one of the latest offerings providing simple food with an emphasis on flavour. ocated at the Farrer Shops, Fox & Bow opened late last year and was inspired by owner Alex Piris’s experiences in Fitzroy near Melbourne. “Every time I go there I indulge,” Alex says. “It’s what I love doing, good food, wine… and that happened away from the city. I thought Canberra was ready for something like this in the suburbs.” Fox & Bow has a welcoming vibe, with seating available both indoors and out. A large mirror, formerly belonging the US Embassy, hangs on one wall reflecting a mural by graffiti artist Steve Caddick in the alley outside, adding colour and vibrancy to the café. The art complements the concept behind the café which Alex says is “to be festive and have fun with it”.
He is passionate about “simple, good food and a place people can relax and enjoy” and “loves looking after people”. “I like cooking for people and serving good coffee… I just want to be a place people can come along have some coffee, food, listen to music and enjoy the area.” A family business, Fox & Bow currently serves breakfast and lunch (Monday to Friday) and an all-day brunch menu on weekends “where you might have to really consider the choices till you make your final decision”. “There’s nothing on our menu that’s complicated,” Alex says. “It is all things people can understand and flavours that go well together.” In terms of the menu Alex says “blokes love having the big burger with beef cheeks” which are slow cooked for eight hours so they are

METHOD Purée one Honey Gold mango and dice the other. Swirl half the purée through yoghurt. Into large tall glasses layer a tablespoon of Honey Gold mango purée and a few pieces of diced mango. Add layers of muesli, yoghurt and mango purée, diced mango and repeat. Finish with fruit and toasted coconut. Tip: To toast coconut, spread on a microwave-safe plate and microwave on high in 30 second increments, stirring each time, until golden brown.
Tip: Make your own toasted muesli by spreading rolled oats in a baking tray. Mist with water and drizzle lightly with honey. Scatter on whole almonds and other favourite additives such as chia, sultanas, craisins or pepitas. Place in the oven preheated to 160°C to cook for about 30 minutes, or until dry and crunchy, stirring every 6-7 minutes so it toasts evenly, and crushing lumps with the back of a spoon. Cool completely before storing in an airtight jar.

ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT
ART AND ABOUT
WITH DIANA STREAK, ARTS EDITOR
Following the light
Chinese Whispers
profound experience often seeps into other events and this is how I came to be thinking about American artist James Turrell, the master of light and colour, during my first foray into the roaring den that is Summernats and while taking a quiet stroll through the SIDS and Kids ACT Christmas lights display in Civic. James Turrell: A Retrospective is exclusive to Canberra and the National Gallery expects interstate visitors to take advantage of the school holidays, but warns they will have to skip the immersive installation that only allows one viewer every 15 minutes; Bindu Shards (Perceptual Cell) is sold out for the next month! Head of Marketing, Alison Wright, says “Ticket sales have been going strong over the holiday period and the premium ticket which includes the Perceptual Cell experience has sold out until 9 February, and all weekends through to the beginning of April. School holidays are one of the most popular times of the year to visit the NGA and so we do expect an increase in interstate visitors during this time.”
What happens when you send a whisper around a group of Chinese artists and ask them to create an artwork according to what they think they heard? Chinese Whispers is an exhibition of newly created artworks by 12 Chinese Australian artists at Goulburn Regional Art Gallery until the end of January. The premise for the exhibition, which is curated by the Gallery’s Guan Wei, Watching. Curator and Exhibitions Officer, Angela D’Elia, came from the children’s game also known as “broken telephone”. In this version, a poem was the original whisper which was passed by telephone from artist to artist who each responded to what they “heard” and ran freely with their ideas, resulting in fantastical, literal and socio-political interpretations. The artists are Kevin Chin, John Deng, Fan Dongwang, Li Cui, Tracy Luff, Kaye Mahoney, Pamela Mei-Leng See, Guan Wei, Jason Wing, Huihai Xie, Louise Zhang and Tianli Zu. Phone 4823 4494 for opening hours.
My favourite installation is The Ganzfeld, Virtuality squared, one of Turrell’s largest to date. Once inside, visitors are saturated in colour, uncertain of their surrounds as the space feels endless, with no visible edges or corners. If you position yourself without reference to other people or the exit and just stare, you feel you are floating in an endless cloud. I had a flashback of this surreal moment at Summernats where I experienced a similar lack of perspective when I was enveloped in a thick white cloud of smoke from 206 tyres during a Guinness World Record attempt for a simultaneous burnout. For a minute I was totally disoriented, unable to see my hand in front of my face. Fortunately Turrell’s work does not include eye-burning fumes or a deafening roar. Another Canberra world record was SIDS and Kids’s largest LED light image display. Standing reflectively in a corner, watching the lights twinkle and change colour, I was reminded of lying fascinated by the lights in the Perceptual Cell, a seven-minute kaleidoscope of colour, described by the artist as “behind the eyes” seeing.

stems, seedpods, leaves and grasses to support her art practice, a process she calls “plantderived eco-printing”. From 7-28 February. Tuggeranong is giving any Tom, Dick or Harriet the opportunity to get creative and have their work professionally exhibited this summer. The Long Hot Summer is making the most of today’s digital world, current photography trends and the striking time of year by seeking photos that capture feelings of summer, taken on a mobile phone or published via Instagram. Exhibition curator Narelle Phillips says the summer theme can be interpreted in a conventional way or through more abstract concepts. “Images can evoke summer by drawing on our senses; like the sound of cicadas, or the smell of rain on a hot tar road or bushfire smoke in the air, or the eucalyptus haze hovering over the Brindabella Ranges.” Participants can enter up to three images, in JPEG format, by COB 27 January.

The Water Diviner (M) Almost 100 years after arguably Australia’s most resonant war moment, actor Russell Crowe makes his bold directorial debut tackling just one of the many personal stories from Gallipoli. An interesting take on the subject, The Water Diviner deviates from the graphic ‘war’ norm by providing a rare insight into the challenging process of post-war identification and burial systems. In front of the camera, Crowe’s heartfelt portrayal of a father whose uncanny instinct to detect water in the arid Australian desert also serves him well in a quest to find his sons on foreign soil is genuinely compelling if

not a little awkward. Showcasing that Crowe has a promising future behind the camera, the film as a whole works. Many elements including cinematography, score, editing, production design, graphics and settings, are on point but as Oscar-driven films are prone, the issues lie in the necessity for jarring Hollywoodisms and an artificial subplot. The verdict: Well worth the experience of its viewing, this is a satisfying film where the story is carried by the emotional interactions of its subjects rather than the graphic depiction of its topic. 3.5 stars. - Joanna Baker

Although I bang on about the need to access quality rest and relaxation, there’s good reason. So many people I see are tired and just managing to drag themselves through the day by sheer force of will. Whilst this stoicism is admirable, in one sense it’s also a path of diminishing returns. Let me explain. The tiredness myth If you’re tired all the time then your body is simply telling you that you’re not getting enough quality rest. However you’d be surprised at how often this basic message from the body gets misinterpreted or overlooked. We tend to laud those who push through not those who are good at taking a well-judged nap.

home MAKE THE MOST OF MARSALA Complex and full-bodied without overpowering, Pantone’s colour of the year – marsala - provides a unifying element for interior spaces. ccording to Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, “its grounding red-brown roots emanate a sophisticated, natural earthiness”.
Add elegance to any room by incorporating this rich and welcoming hue in accent pieces, accessories and paint. Leatrice says marsala’s plush characteristics are enhanced when the colour is applied to textured surfaces, making it an ideal choice for rugs and upholstered living room furniture. It is also a natural fit for the kitchen and dining room, the tabletop, small appliances and linens throughout the home. Expect to find marsala in stripes and floral patterns in printed placemats, dinnerware, bedding and throws.

January 9 – 15
PICK OF THE WEEK I Am Love Saturday, SBS ONE, 11.10pm, MA15+ (2009) Art house favourite Tilda Swinton (left) plays the Russian trophy wife of a wealthy Milanese businessman who starts to fall for a young chef (Edoardo Gabbriellini) – who is also her son’s best friend. Ditching her dull routine, the desperate housewife rediscovers the joys of love away from her stale marriage but soon realises there are serious consequences to her actions. Flamboyant, melodramatic and steeped in rich tradition, director Luca Guadagnino’s epic stays suitably tense.
Friday
Slumdog Millionaire
Edge Of Darkness Monday, PRIME7, 9.30pm, MA15+ (2010) Veteran actor Mel Gibson (left) gets back to playing a tough guy in this gritty action-thriller about an angry, broken-hearted dad with nothing left to lose. Casino Royale director Martin Campbell revisits his 1985 mini-series of the same name as he tells the story of Boston cop Thomas Craven (Gibson) whose life is turned upsidedown when his activist daughter Emma (Bojana Novakovic) is gunned down on his doorstep. Convinced he was the intended target, Craven embarks on a bloody quest for retribution.
Sunday, PRIME7, 9pm, MA15+ (2008) Director Danny Boyle’s captivating tale of how an impoverished Indian teen inexplicably becomes a big winner on the Hindi version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? delivers a huge pay-off to its audience. The dynamic rags-to-riches saga unfolds like a Dickens novel set in Mumbai as Jamal (Dev Patel), a boy from the slums, relates how he came to know the answers to the game show’s questions. The intriguing set-up is used to uncover Jamal’s tragic past and reunite him with his lost love Latika (Freida Pinto, right).
