“I can be changed by what happens to me. But I refuse to be reduced by Maya Angelou It was an uplifting occasion last week when several hundred people gathered on a bright winter’s day for Lifeline Canberra’s Women of Spirit Awards. These annual awards acknowledge women in our community who have not only overcome adversity, but in remarkable demonstrations of resilience and compassion, go on to help others. Every single nominee was worthy of recognition and celebration, each motivated by a desire to make the world a better place, and to improve the lot of those who may face similar challenges. For example: a former fulltime child carer of a mentally ill parent has completed post-graduate studies to work in an organisation aiming to ensure no child carer experiences the systemic neglect she did; bereaved parents advocate for better supports or treatments to ease the path for other families; domestic violence survivors and cancer survivors light the way for others. I salute you. Reasons to be grateful this past week include celebrating exceptional humans at the Lifeline Canberra Women of Spirit Awards, meeting new people and catching up with friends and acquaintances, all those who strive to make the world a better place, a long-awaited therapeutic massage, a family birthday gathering, and fun times with friends at the opening of Saint Malo Spanish restaurant in City West. Many people buy things from the Green Shed, use them in their own business, or sell them elsewhere. One woman, for instance, buys bicycle wheels and parts, puts leadlight glaze on them, and sells them at markets. Others use it as a toy library. Parents might buy their two-yearold a small bicycle, bring it back and get a bigger bike when the child turns five, and again when they turn Electrical10. goods come back, too. Staff often find they tested and tagged the same item eight yearsSomeago.of it goes for free: schoolteachers take what they need for their classrooms; women escaping domestic violence, or kids moving away from their parents can get furniture.
- Nick Fuller Full stories online.
Exercise machines advertised on late night television appear at the Green Shed three months later. Every Christmas, they take five or six wrapped presents; these days, they don’t even bother unwrapping them. It’s either a cup or aWithcandle.eBay and the public’s awareness of how valuable their unwanted items could be, Ms Parkes feared the Green Shed might shrink and die. “But instead, it just gets bigger and bigger! … An explosion in people buying more and more things.” What that says about the consumer society is “absolutely terrifying”, she feels. She wonders if people are growing more aware, or if Amazon and online shopping will make the problem worse. When people buy online, they are more likely to throw things out because the goods are not what they expected, she believes. Recently, someone brought in a brand-new table and chairs they had bought from Ikea that morning, because they did not fit in their flat. The Green Shed gets offered 80 lounge suites a week (and charities probably get as many), but can only sell three or four.
Over the last dozen years, the Green Shed has given $1.25 million to charities, too, raising money on the last Wednesday of every month.
The Green Shed at Mugga Lane is vast: 2,000 square metres inside and 4,000 square metres outside of books and bikes and beds and brica-brac, toasters and televisions, chairs and desks, DVDs and CDs, and mountains of clothes. This is only one of four sites; there are another centre in Mitchell and two shops in Garema Place. The amount of ‘stuff’ that comes through the Green Shed is not countable, co-founder Sandie Parkes says. Nor has it ever been weighed, although some guess it recovers 8,000 tonnes of waste a year.
Last week, though, there were 14 wooden penises (not sex toys, but artistically made), tucked away in a desk drawer. And a box of plastic egg-boiling cups: ‘No more unpeeling hot eggs,’ according to the box. You break the eggs into the cups, then cook them in water. Ms Parkes is baffled. “Why would anyone do that when you can put it in the water straight after the shell? … Would you buy some plastic thing that you have to wash after?”
Greens MLA Jo Clay estimates the Green Shed offsets half the ACT’s carbon emissions from landfill – at no cost to the taxpayer. (The government provides the facility – the Green Shed pays for upkeep – and manages contracts.)

A stream of oddities and treasures flows through the Green Shed.“You never know what’s going to come in the door next,” Ms Parkes said.
The most wonderful thing the Green Shed ever found, she thinks, is an antique slide rule – one of only five known in the world. They have also found Bibles presented to WWI soldiers, letters from the trenches, and WWII medals. In the early days, Ms Parkes said, the Green Shed had never had a grand piano or a penny farthing. They’ve had two grand pianos in the last 12 years, but no penny farthings yet.

“People just want to buy an alternative; they don’t want to buy new.”The Garema Place shops – one of them “a curated display of beautiful things” – attract public servants and city workers who would never come out to a tip, Ms Parkes said. The Green Shed Underground, the op shop near the bus interchange, brings in the young generation.
Some think the Green Shed’s customers are poor – but, Ms Parkes explains, they get all sorts.
“But that is a conservative guess,” Ms Parkes says. Some reckon there are a million different items across the four sites, if you count every screw.
“We can’t take all the furniture people offer us … so we have to say no, and they just get buried.” Ms Parkes advises the public to buy less, and to think about what they“Whybuy. would you buy something to put your flipping boiled egg in? Why would you buy a cup and wrapping paper and Sellotape and ribbon, wrap it all up, and give it to someone who’s going to just give it to us? Don’t do it. Find something else to do for someone.”
Green Shed co-founder Sandie Parkes at the Garema Place shop.
And everything brought to the Green Shed sells within a week (unless it gets broken or dirty), snapped up by thousands of visitors (20,000 visits recorded everyTheweek).Green Shed, “the first reuse centre in the world,” is the most productive, cheapest way of dealing with unwanted goods, Ms Parkes says. It is, she believes, the circular economy in practice. “A reuse centre gives people an easy option to donate goods, giving them the chance for a second life or an alternative life [as something else], and thus continuing to use all of the energy that went into the production of that item.”

Stable and safe housing is fundamental for people to live with dignity and health, and for social, educational and employment outcomes. It should be accessible for all Australians.
Recently, a volunteer in a local organisation told me the best they can do at the moment, given the demands on accommodation services, is to cover the registration for people living in their cars.
Multi-pronged policy response to
opinion
Housing was a central part of the platform Federal Labor took to the last election and is now a central priority of the new Labor Government.
Labor wants every Australian to know the security of having a roof over their head. This is something Prime Minister Albanese is deeply committed to. Labor will create the $10 billion Housing Australia Future Fund which will build 20,000 social housing properties – 4,000 of which will be allocated for women and children fleeing domestic and family violence and older women on low incomes who are at risk of homelessness. A further 10,000 affordable homes will be built for frontline workers.Ourgovernment will establish a National Housing Supply and Affordability Council, to ensure the Commonwealth plays a leadership role in increasing housing supply and improving housingThroughaffordability.ourHelp to Buy scheme, the Government will partner with up to 10,000 Australians each year to cut the cost of buying a home by up to 40 per cent, meaning they can buy their own homes sooner. Importantly we will deliver a National Housing and Homelessness Plan setting out the short-, medium- and longer-term reforms needed to make it easier for all Australians to have a home. This national leadership has been called for many years. It will be developed with the support and assistance of states and territories, local government, not-for-profit and civil society organisations, industry bodies, superannuation funds and other experts in housing, finance and urban development.

Homelessness Australia have found that, in 2020-21, almost 110,000 people went to homeless services needing long-term housing. This was only provided to 3.4 per cent of those needing help and a further 26.9 per cent were refereed to housing providers. More than 76,000 people missed out.
A broad range of policies, including strong social security and health systems, also play an important part in addressing homelessness.
Each night in Canberra, devastatingly, many people face homelessness. This could mean sleeping rough on our freezing streets, in a car or emergency accommodation, or couch surfing between friends’ places. It is an issue that is raised with me frequently as a local representative, whether by people seeking help to find accommodation, by local organisations that are struggling to meet demand for support, or Canberrans who are concerned about what appears to be increasing numbers in our community without a permanent home.
Addressing homelessness requires national leadership, and a multi-pronged policy response.

Should stage 3 tax cuts be shelved?
fit the bill
be going to people earning over $120,000 pa. I am in two minds. I like the idea of repealing stage 3 in a way and, if that occurs, I suggest it be made more palatable to our wealthier brothers and sisters by using the savings on money flagged over the next 10 years to spend on muchneeded investments in defence ($270 billion over 10 years). I doubt that will happen, as a strong ADF is anathema to Albo’s Green mates. However, it’s not just pollies and well-paid public servants who will benefit from stage 3 tax cuts, but also hard-working tradies and small business people around the country – people who actually produce something and employ people and keep our country prosperous, strong and growing. These people will receive muchneeded extra funds to help sustain and grow their businesses. Recent history shows that where tax cuts have been given, the economy grows. Reagan and Thatcher did it. Howard did it. Even Donald Trump did it, and their economies prospered. The next most likely UK PM, Liz Truss, is also promising it. Whilst some lucky people who don’t need it will benefit, a much greater number of Australians who will benefit will put the money to good use. So Albo, on balance, you should stay strong on this one and keep your promise.

I feel sorry for old ScoMo. He was a reasonable PM, but the latest revelation about appointing himself to five or more portfolios was just plain stupid. The only issue he directly interfered with (disastrously) was to stop a perfectly good gas project offshore from Newcastle proceeding. This project would have powered all homes in Australia for the next 30 years and the wealthy inner-city electorates were going to vote Teal regardless. Good one, ScoMo. How dumb can you get? Albo was always going to break a promise the moment he became PM, namely the one to make household electricity cheaper by $275 per household per year. When you are going to increase the amount of unreliable, costly, renewable energy from 39 to 83 per cent of the grid over the next eight years, prices have to go up – a lot! In the UK, they’re talking about $9,000 (5,000 pounds) per year by Xmas time. Which brings me to a question that is vexing the government: should the stage 3 tax cuts be canned? The unions and Greens want to can them. The government, at this stage, is sticking to its promise. The cuts will see a blanket tax rate of 30 per cent on annual incomes of $45,000-$200,000. It means a politician in federal parliament or a well-off public servant on $211,250 will get a tax cut of $9,075 and a nurse on $72,235 a tax cut of only $680. The cost to the budget over the next seven years will be $184.2 billion, of which $137.9 billion will

“There’s so much stigma surrounding beauty pageants being toxic. What I love about Miss Diamond is that there are no age, height, or weight restrictions,” said Christina.
Over 1 million Aussies live with an eating disorder, and less than a quarter receive treatment or support, despite eating disorders having the highest mortality rate of any mental illness.
When 18-year-old Cristina Silvestri was chosen to compete for Australia in Miss Diamond International this September, she immediately knew which charity she wanted to represent. A couple of months ago, Cristina was dipping her toe in the local modelling scene whilst on her gap year, when she came across the Miss Diamond pageant on Facebook.
“When I first told Butterfly Foundation my story, I didn’t know who else to go to.” Through their chat line, the Foundation convinced Cristina to take a single step - go to her GP. There, she was administered a blood test. “When the results came back, I was low on everything. Low on iron, low on magnesium, every single vitamin you can think of, I was low on.

It was disappointing to read such an unbalanced article from Bill Stefaniak on the NDIS (‘Is the NDIS sustainable?’, CW 18 August 2022, p8). He focussed on crime, quoted a few large numbers, and handpicked examples, then dismissed the NDIS as unsustainable. Another example of why every politician should spend a day in the shoes of a person with disability. Disability can affect anyone, anytime, so put the politicking aside – this is about humans facing challenges that most can’tAsimagine.parents of a child with a complex disability, we understand that the NDIS has its issues, and we, too, are concerned that some lowlifes seem to think that any large government scheme is fair game. We also know that the NDIS makes a positive difference to many in our community every day. It can enable people to access their home safely, manage personal care with dignity, and participate in education, work and community. So let’s focus our efforts on making the NDIS work, rather than flippantly dismissing it “unsustainable” and, in the process, tarnishing the most vulnerable in our community as criminals.
I expect that the prospect of thousands of live sheep and cattle crammed aboard seagoing vessels to be delivered, after a journey of weeks, covered in their own waste, to be slaughtered by god knows what method and the possibility of their being thrown overboard should they be unacceptable for whatever reason, would be as unacceptable to you as the poor tired horse in Manly all those years ago. A response that cruelty generates income might be considered unacceptable. For the record, I eat meat. But I pray there is no karma.
- B Larsen, Woden ACT I read S. Validzic’s letter from Croatia (28 July) and the response by J. Lawence (4 August) and it brought to mind the address given at the ANU by Al Grassby, Minister for Immigration, in the early 1970s. It is sad to say that 50 years on, nothing much has improved. Australians had attacked their environment rather than come to terms with it, Mr Grassby said.

The Canberra Raiders produced a second-half comeback to claim a 28-22 win over the Knights in Newcastle on Sunday 21 August. Canberra trailed 22-8 at the break but scored 14 quick points after half time to level the scores before the Raiders’ big names stepped up. With just nine minutes remaining, Josh Papalii burst through the middle of the Knights’ defence before finding Joe Tapine, who threw the ball over to Jack Wighton to score the winner. The Raiders are just one win outside the top 8 and play Manly at GIO Stadium on Saturday 27 August 3pm.
The GWS Giants announced Adam Kingsley as the club’s next AFL senior coach. A highly-rated assistant coach, Kingsley won the race to replace Leon Cameron ahead of interim coach Mark McVeigh and Melbourne assistant Adem Yze.

Canberra man Troy Huckstepp first became acquainted with the people of Timor in 2001, while posted with the army during the United Nations mission ahead of the first democratic election post-Indonesian occupation. Huckstepp remembers children in the houses nearby were excited to wash their hats for them and to deliver their letters from loved ones.
The association is working with the Timorese Amateur Boxing Federation (Federasaun Boxe Amadora TimorBoxing ACT fighting to get Timor to the Olympics
The Timorese athletes will compete in the 7th Muscle Up Charity Fight Night for Muscular Dystrophy in Canberra on Saturday 3 August; the following week they head to Blacktown for a PCYC event. The other days will be spent making the most of training in gyms around the ACT, where Boxing Australia’s head coach Jamie Pittman has agreed to run some sessions with them. According to Huckstepp, the ultimate goal is to get Timorese boxers to the Olympics, which he knows will be a challenge. Because many of the athletes can’t afford to travel to fight, they only have a small pool of people to develop their skills with. There is also a need for further education around coaching and training, especially sports physiology and nutrition. Boxing ACT is crowdfunding to cover the costs of accommodation, supplies, and spending money for the men whilst they are here. With an achievable goal of $7,000, they have already received a few donations, including some from Timor. news Leste) to put Timor on the map of the sporting world. They plan to develop the experience among their athletes, while also establishing a standard of coaching and officiating in the region to improve Timor’s level of participation on an international scale. At the recent Southeast Asian Games, boxing was the only sport in which the Timorese won medals, with boxers taking home a silver and a Forbronze.thefirst time since his army days, Huckstepp travelled to Timor with his new business earlier this year. While there, he found a gym where he could train and quickly developed a relationship with coach Abilio Dos Santos, a former national representative for amateur boxing. Santos will be coming to Canberra with two national champions – Delio Mouzinho, representing the 71kg weight division who recently won the silver medal, and Elidio da Conceição, representing the 54kg division.
“I think it really leaves a mark on you going to a place like that, especially going there in a challenging time for the local population but just seeing how friendly, how optimistic they remain, how resilient they are. I’ve also wanted to go back and restore some of the connections,” he said.
Amateur boxers from Timor-Leste are preparing to pack their bags later this month and head to Canberra for two weeks. From 31 August to 14 September, two of the young nation’s champions and their coach will tour the ACT, hoping to improve their fighting skills with the goal to see Timor compete in the Olympics.
Huckstepp’s grandfather was a professional boxer in the 1940s, which originally sparked his interest in the sport. He had a few matches in his army days, then, when his body grew tired of playing rugby union, he decided to permanently switch to boxing. After a few competitions in the over-40s’ masters, he saw there was a need for more management of the sport here in the capital. Now, he is the president of Boxing ACT, a not-for-profit sports association responsible for developing the participation and competitiveness of amateur boxing in Canberra.

“I watched this piece that’s not uplifting from the beginning to the end, it has an honesty and a rawness about it, but yet, when it finished, I was just struck by this sense of hope it gave.”
McCune was also motivated by a drive to help bolster the live theatre industry after a devastating two years.
“There’s some beautiful dialogue in this show, there are some things people say that are just so poetic, a little bit like Dylan’s music, and you hear new things all the time.”
“I can’t remember if my first job out of drama school ever came here,” she told Canberra Weekly. “It will definitely be my first time at the CanberraWrittenTheatre.”byIrish playwright Conor McPherson, Girl From The North Country features a selection of 20 Bob Dylan songs spanning his vast and varied discography, all selected by McPherson himself. It began with Dylan expressing interest in a show being developed with his music. After receiving a host of expressions of interest, McPherson’s ultimately proved successful. His process started by being sent everything Dylan has written, after which “he walked, and walked and walked and listened while he walked,” said McCune.
McCune will rectify that this week when she graces the Canberra Theatre stage as part of the ensemble cast of hit musical, Girl From The North Country.
Lisa McCune reimagines Bob Dylan in Girl From The North Country cover story
It’s almost shocking to believe that beloved Australian actor Lisa McCune has never performed in Canberra throughout her illustrious 30-year career in the limelight. With so many credits across musical theatre, television, and the silver screen, it’s never once brought her to the capital in a working capacity.
“I was in the middle of my sixth lockdown in Melbourne, it was winter, and it was really feeling a bit dire down there,” she said.
“I felt quite strongly that theatre was where we would need to do the most work, because you have audiences on the television platforms and we know people will tune in from home,” she said.“But, to ever lose the opportunity and not have live theatre would just be, it’s been around for so long … I’d hate to see it disappear from our landscape or become culturally irrelevant; it would just be terrible.”
“They don’t necessarily progress the story, they’re not necessarily like monologues; they’re kind of musical moments that thread through the show,” she McCunesaid.was full of praise for the world McPherson has built around Dylan’s music – she regularly receives feedback from audience members who say the story stays with them long after the final curtain.
Featuring 19 actors and four musicians, it is an ensemble theatre piece in a true sense of the expression, something that was important for McCune emerging from the pandemic.

“There’s such a tightly woven concoction of stories and journeys in it that you have to wonder if he had a whiteboard to make it all come together, but it sort of does. “There’s lots of loose ends, which I like; it wraps up at the end but you’re not sure what happens, it’s like splinters from an explosion, that’s what it feels like.”

To Venice, Love Forever, from Canberra
Hannah McKenzie (left) and Clare Young head to the Venice International Film Festival with Canberra short film, Love Forever. Photo: Kerrie Brewer. Canberra short film Love Forever is the only Australian work to be included in this year’s Venice International Film Festival, which runs from 31 August to 10 September. Written and directed by Clare Young , the film will debut as part of the Orizzonti Short Film Competition.
After meeting around 80 girls, they found Hannah McKenzie and were blown away.
Young was a recipient of mentorship funding through ArtsACT in 2012 which saw her shadow Jane Campion through the development, writing, and production of the first season of Top of the Lake. The mentorship also saw her write her own work to be produced.
The film was shot back in 2014 when McKenzie was in her final year of school, while Young was pregnant with her first child during preproduction. By the time the film was in post-production, Young’s daughter was born.
Inspired by Young’s own experience growing up in Canberra, the film follows Emily as she falls in love for the first time with a boy from Sydney’s Northern Beaches. Young laughed as she admitted there was definitely a boy from the Northern Beaches but said it’s more a comingof-age story that shatters the illusion of love transforming you. Emily, through her journey of first love, really finds herself. According to Young, script writing was never her strong suit and the film has been

Feeling vulnerable, under pressure from high expectations, and worried about doing the right thing, Young listened to the people around her and ended up unhappy with the film. From beauty influencer to onstage beauty, Stephanie Bailey stars as Eliza Doolittle in Free-Rain Theatre Company’s upcoming production of My Fair Lady at The Q Performing Arts Centre, 30 August-25 September. Based on George Bernard Shaw’s 1912 play Pygmalion , My Fair Lady is one of the world’s most-loved musicals. The 1956 Broadway production starring Julie Andrews and Rex Harrison was an astounding success, winning six Tony Awards. Following the triumph of the stage musical, the now classic film starring Audrey Hepburn was released in 1964. Bailey says playing the role of Doolittle is a dream come true, having grown up watching the film and seeing both Julie Andrews and Audrey Hepburn as her idols. She is also able to relate to the strength and passion of the character.
In Free-Rain’s adaptation, Professor Higgins is played by D.G. Maloney who has experience working in Hollywood films; he starred alongside Nicolas Cage in Knowing. Bailey says it’s been incredible to work alongside someone which such great acting expertise. Having a creative outlet is important to Bailey. In 2013 after an injury saw her dancing career put on hold, she began a YouTube channel and quickly became one of Australia’s first beauty influencers. Then, upon moving to Canberra in 2019, she didn’t feel comfortable doing it here, so turned to the theatre. Starting as part of ensemble casts in Free-Rain’s productions of Mama Mia! and Priscilla, which both saw long postponements due to lockdowns, Bailey has been cautious about getting too excited about her leading role in case it is also put off. However, with opening night being so close, she is feeling confident things are going to come together for this one – but isn’t taking any chances.
With the original being over a century old, some of the themes can seem a bit out of date. She says they have tried to empower Doolittle in the new production, creating more equality between her and Higgins. While Doolittle has always been a strong and independent character, Bailey says their production is more aligned with modern standards.
time out money and be able to work in a flower shop,” Bailey says.
“It’s been fun taking an old classic and trying to make it a little bit more modern by adding a few little feminist touches to it,” she says. The play had some saucy elements for its time; at one point, an unwed Doolittle is living with two men! Bailey says the story was modern even then in the way it wasn’t a classic love story; love is alluded to but never confirmed. Many productions take their own approach to this, with the lead actors letting their chemistry decide whether the two are in love or not.
“I’m going into my own little version of lockdown; I’m only seeing who I live with, and who I see at the theatre,” Bailey smiles. When she isn’t playing the iconic role, Bailey focuses on her freelance digital content producing and videography work, regularly creating content for theatre companies in the capital. With plans to move back to Sydney after this production, Bailey is hoping to break into the theatre scene there. See Stephanie Bailey perform in My Fair Lady at The Q, 30 August-25 September; theq.net.au - Jessica Cordwell
“It’s also been fun to play with the ambiguity of the love story and I’m looking forward to seeing how the audience reads our interpretation. Are they in love or just friends, that’s the real question.”
Set in the 1910s in London, Eliza Doolittle is a cockney girl who sells flowers on the side of the road, when she meets a sophisticated phonetics professor Henry Higgins. So sure of his abilities, Higgins takes it upon himself to teach Doolittle to be a proper lady, and she agrees, to improve her job prospects.
“It’s basically a bet with this other guy that he will teach her to speak like a lady, then she will go to this ball and if she can convince everyone that she is a lady, she will be able to get

1 You shot Night Sky with Sissy Spacek and J.K Simmons. What was it like working with such impressive actors? That was a blast. I’m still pinching myself now, even after it’s been a year since we started preproduction. I had the most fun ever; it was such an insightful experience to work with such industry professionals. The wealth of knowledge they have is immense.

The production sent me a prescreening and it took me a week to sit down and watch it. I was so nervous because I was so worried about my performance, if I was able to fit in on screen. I put it off, then my mum and I watched it together and she was like ‘this is amazing, this is one of the best shows I’ve seen in a long time’. She said ‘even if you weren’t in it, I would still watch this show’.

At the beginning of World War II, the Australian government sent five destroyers to support the British Navy in the Mediterranean. They were old ships that had seen better days and were dismissed by Nazi propaganda as being a load of scrap iron. Despite their limitations, the ships performed valiantly in the Mediterranean, escorting vital convoys and rescuing soldiers after the fall of Greece. The Scrap Iron Flotilla is a fascinating and well told account of the activities of the ships and the challenges they faced during the War.

For the winter clothes you know you’re keeping, make sure they are clean and dry before storing them away. Woollens should be washed in cold water on a delicate cycle or by hand and then laid flat to dry so they retain their shape. Next time you’re in need of your cold weather gear, it is likely you won’t be in the mood to mend or restore them, which can encourage unnecessary buying.

Pest-proof your storage space with lavender sachets or charcoal bags. This will keep both moths and gross odours away. When packing away winter clothes, use the same logic as bagging groceries, with bulky and heavy items such as sweaters at the bottom of the pile, and delicates like woollen scarves at the top. Never fold your winter coats, as creases in heavy coats can become permanent over the months; hang them with a sturdy hanger so you don’t find them collecting dust at the bottom of the closet next winter. With every season that you can make your winter coat last, you are minimising the 23kg of clothes the average Aussie sends to landfill every year. You might need magnesium
Even if you eat plenty of plantbased foods, unfortunately, adverse changes to soil quality as well as modern cultivation practices have caused a decline in nutrient content in the foods we grow, so we’re no longer getting the same nutritional value from our Finally, food.you need to be able to absorb the magnesium (as well as other nutrients) from the food you eat, so anything less than optimal digestive function reduces your capacity to extract the nutrients from yourLowfood.magnesium can manifest in many ways including: Low energy: Magnesium is crucial to the body’s ability to regulate energy levels, so if you’re low in magnesium you’ll feel tired, and during exercise and exertion your heart will have to work harder.
Heart health: Low magnesium is associated with high blood pressure, arrhythmia, and an increased risk of heart attack.

wellbeing Remember the school science experiment when your teacher held a thin ribbon-shaped piece of magnesium in a pair of tongs and lit it with a Bunsen burner? That same highly flammable substance is essential to healthy functioning of every cell in your body, being involved in energy creation, protein formation, gene maintenance, muscle movement, as well as nervous system regulation.
Weak bones: We all know calcium is crucial for bone density and strength, but did you know that in order to absorb calcium, we need adequate magnesium levels along with Vitamins D3 and K2?
Blood sugar regulation: Magnesium plays a role in glucose metabolism which means that if you have low magnesium, you’re more likely to have weight gain and diabetes.
Muscle Cramps: Magnesium has been found to reduce symptoms and the pain associated with muscle cramps. It also helps with constipation and poor digestion. If you think you might be low in magnesium, talk to a trusted health professional to work out whether supplements (and what dose) would be appropriate for you.
It’s estimated that a staggering 80 to 90 per cent of Australians have sub-optimal magnesium levels that mostly go undiagnosed, according to a 2018 study published in Open Heart Journal. Why are so many people low in magnesium?

There are multiple reasons. The standard Australian diet is overly reliant on processed food which is magnesium poor compared to plant-based food (by the way, foods rich in magnesium include spinach and leafy greens in general, avocadoes, salmon and dark chocolate to name a few).
Stress: Magnesium deficiencies have been shown to increase the level of the ‘stress hormone’ cortisol in the brain. Increasing magnesium levels can have calming benefits for people with busy or stressful lives.
Poor sleep: Magnesium helps you to fall asleep, stay asleep and feel more energised upon waking. It appears magnesium assists in melatonin production and reduction of cortisol levels, resulting in better sleep.

“We came very close to winning the National Portrait Gallery years ago – we got given second place, which was nice. It caused me to look really closely at that part of Canberra that is now a triumvirate … a really powerful part of theIncity.”amasterclass for rising Canberran architects, Mr Godsell explains the critical importance of understanding the nature of the city before designing a building.
Food2Soil is a locally made, biologically alive fertiliser made from recycled food and coffee waste that would have otherwise gone to landfill.
Expoundinghome architecture’s role in combating climate change
Melbourne-born Sean Godsell becoming an outstanding Australian architect was possibly an inevitable and cosmic alignment of fate. David Godsell, the late successful architect, is his father and Mr Godsell (junior) was raised in a home designed by his gifted old man, who adapted Usonian house principles on a sandy and sloped block in beachside Beaumaris.
“Food2Soil is beneficial as a conditioner for vege and potted plants” - Tracey Bool, Horticulturalist Available online & at IGA Chapman. @food2soil.au info@food2soil.com.au www.food2soil.com.au
An internationally renowned and critically acclaimed architect in his own right, Mr Godsell is currently on his national victory tour as the Australian Institute of Architects’ 2022 Gold Medallist – the Institute’s highest honour.
He says he’s honoured and privileged for his peers to grant him such a significant award and was thrilled to be shown around the Academy of Science as part of his tour – a construction which he says is an “all-time favourite”.
Canberra was his first tour stop, and Mr Godsell sat down with Canberra Weekly to chat about the link between architecture and climate change, integrating First Nations culture into design, and the future of architecture.HesaysCanberra’s architecture has some “great moments” and the uniqueness of the city is emboldened by the legacy of the Griffins and the Plan for Canberra.
But grasping the conception of a city is only the tip of the iceberg for Australian architects, he says, as they must remember they’re “building on “Wherevercountry”.wearein Australia, we’re building on land that was part of the traditional Internationally acclaimed architect Sean Godsell is the Australian Institute of Architects’ 2022 Gold Medallist recipient. Food2Soil is concentrated, so a little goes a long way.
“To go back to when we were designing our scheme – our unsuccessful scheme – for the Portrait Gallery,” Mr Godsell smiles, “I remember we spent a lot of time brushing up on the history of the city, the importance of civic access and so on and so on.”
Architecture is embedded in his genetic code.
“It’s [climate change] an issue of the day. All architects ever do is we deal with whatever the issues of the day are because the history of architecture suggests that at certain times in our evolution, there were important things to do,” Mr Godsell says.
“There was a point where building temples to our gods was important, there was a point where building cathedrals and palaces were important. So, at the moment, what is important is that whenever we build a building, we minimise the impact that building has on the environment because the planet is suffering.”Speaking to emerging architects in Canberra during his Gold Medal breakfast, Mr Godsell expressed optimism for the future of architecture, despite a mountain of obstacles in the new graduates’ way.
“I think any architect not talking about climate change is missing the point … We deal with the constructed environment. So, we, as a profession, are at the coal face of the issue of climate and what we design has a direct quantifiable impact,” he says.“So, if we design buildings that are intelligent, in terms of the environment, then we are doing good for the community. If we are not doing that then we are missing the point. So, every time we step up to the plate to do a new building, we have climate at the top of ourMragenda.”Godsell fears the importance of architecture is overlooked by the general public. With the effects of climate change ever present in Australia, he feels a greater understanding of how architecture weaves the fabrics of society and history together would impose deeper insight into how the industry can be vital in reversing the impacts.
owners’ life. So, I think in multiple small ways, our profession is sensitive to and attuned to that fact now, and for two centuries we haven’t been.“So, I think that’s a really important moment for our country but also our profession, that we can acknowledge that, and we can acknowledge it in a number of ways when we design buildings to understand the history of the land, to understand the local mobs and what was important about the land that we are building on, and to respect their concerns about what’s going on is reallyDuringimportant.”hisGold Medallist presentation, Mr Godsell’s core theme centres on the integral role architecture plays in future-proofing our planet against climate change.

Builders ACT (MBA) have welcomed the proposed changes, but MBA CEO Michael Hopkins has emphasised the need for a transitional period that is well“Theplanned.localbuilding and construction industry is already taking steps to improve the energy efficiency of new and existing homes,” Mr Hopkins says. He says it’s essential to provide sufficient time for the industry to be able to adapt to the changes to allow education to be developed and delivered to the sector and regulators.
The ACT is leading the charge for national energy efficiency standards by encouraging requirements for new homes built across Australia to increase from a six to a seven-star energy rating.
The proposed updates to the National Construction Code (NCC) will be considered at the upcoming Building Ministers Meeting on Friday 26 August.

Featuring Taryn’s network of well-known celebrity friends including Celeste Barber, Jameela Jamil, Electric Fields, along with Chico the family dog, Embrace: Kids brings together a vibrant collection of stories and voices to entertain and inspire kids and parents alike, showing us that the first step in changing the world, is changing your own mind. CW has 10 x Embrace: Kids in-season double passes to be won. A collection of three handcrafted non-alcoholic wine alternatives, NON’s new Everyday Range focuses less on what was taken away (the hangxiety for one) and instead prioritises creating new and interesting flavours. One for the foodie dads with a more sophisticated palate, within the new bundle sits fan favourites NON1 (Salted Raspberry & Chamomile), NON3 (Toasted Cinnamon & Yuzu) and NON7 (Stewed Cherry & Coffee).
