One homeless man ended up in Canberra from Mackay, Queensland, with only a T-shirt, slacks, and a pair of thongs. “He was freezing,” Mr Young remembers. He gave him a jacket and some socks. “The next night, he was very happy, and had a good night’s sleep, for a change. These little things can be small, but make such a difference for our companions.” Mr Young and Mr McGuinness encourage the public to join up and volunteer, too.

“In one of the most affluent cities in one of the most affluent countries of the world, we all have a responsibility to do all we can to eliminate homelessness in this city,” she says.

In the meantime, while out with the van in Dickson, Ms Vassarotti was struck that Night Patrol was “a magnet for people who needed it”. Its volunteers treated people with dignity and respect, giving them kind words, unprompted additional suggestions, and help.

“It’s very rewarding,” Mr McGuinnessVolunteeringsays.can be as little as one shift of three hours a month; training takes an hour and a half, then volunteers go out with experienced team leaders and learn the ropes, Mr Young says.

“Some people have old blankets that are still perfectly good, but they don’t want it anymore,” Mr Young said. “We’ll take anything in good condition that people don’t want.”

“I’ve never felt insecure or at threat from anybody when I’ve been out… Everybody’s well behaved… They’ll help wherever possible: they’re very friendly and appreciative.“Itwouldbe easy to stay at home, especially on cold wet nights, but we always need to consider what our companions are going through, and what they are experiencing. To me, it is getting out and giving some support to the people who are less fortunate than myself.

Homelessness is increasing in the community, and the profile of people seeking help has changed, Ms Hohnen says.

Without Vinnies Night Patrol, Canberra’s homeless people would go hungry and cold, says volunteer Greg Young. Set up 21 years ago, in August 2001, the Night Patrol operates 364 nights a year, its two vans in Civic, Dickson, and Queanbeyan bringing food and hot drinks (tea, coffee, Milo, soup), fruit, clothing, sleeping bags, blankets, and hygiene packs. But for many, it’s the human connection that matters. To the volunteers, the homeless people are ‘companions’; “our friends,” Mr Young“Vinniesexplains.isalways here, has always been here for me, and you come with no barrow to push,” one homeless person told CEO Lucy Hohnen. “You guys are always here to listen. That’s why I like Vinnies … it’s unconditional support.” “It’s great just to be able to speak to people,” Mr Young says. “A lot of companions don’t have interactions throughout the day –they’ll sit in a park, and not have much to discuss. When we go out, they want to tell their story and chat about what’s happening.” One man in Queanbeyan, for instance, “comes up with these pieces of paper – ‘Have a look at my latest idea!’ – and we’ll talk about his ideas. He gets enjoyment out of that.” Last year, the Night Patrol served 8,000 people, even with lockdowns and reduced volunteers, and provided more than 5,000 items of clothing, blankets, sleeping bags, and hygiene packs. In the week of its 21st anniversary, 1-7 August, it provided 167 counts of assistance (24 people a night).

Vinnies Night Patrol celebrates 21 years of compassion

“They have jobs, families to support; some have lost houses in theOnepandemic.”man,Mr Young recalls, was evicted during lockdown when he could not pay his rent; he ended up sleeping in his car. But his story had a happy ending: he found a new job, got enough funds to move back into a unit, and started his life again. Others are not so lucky. While the stereotype is of people sleeping rough on the streets, many homeless people are sleeping in cars, in tents at the Cotter, or couch surfing – the victims of living pressures, the lack of social and affordable housing, family breakdown, domestic violence, or alcohol and drug abuse. “It could happen to anybody we know; it could happen to us, even those with a job, let alone a health or a social issue,” Ms Hohnen says. “Life is complex, and the pressures on people are immense.”

“A run of luck, or bad circumstances – and you can be out,” Mr Young explains. “If you haven’t got any family to fall back on, it can be very difficult for people.”

“Vinnie’s hard work has truly improved outcomes for people sleeping rough across the city and just over the border in Queanbeyan,” she says.

Some homeless people, he says, cannot get back on their feet, because society won’t give them a go. “I believe that most of them have got the skills and abilities to help society in some way. But trying to find who’s going to give them that opportunity can be very difficult.”

NEWS

Dr Emma Campbell, CEO of the ACT Council of Social Service (ACTCOSS), says that through the Night Patrol and other programs, Vinnies makes “an incredible contribution to supporting those who face financial and social disadvantage in the ACT”. What can the wider community do to help? Tom McGuinness urges the public to donate, at Vinnies bins or shops. He is team leader from the general hands day shift, which maintains the patrol vehicles and collects and stocks the food and“Weclothing.always need blankets and sleeping bags and good clothing and footwear,” he says.

“I can always go home to a comfortable warm bed, while our companions do not have this luxury.”

Rebecca Vassarotti, ACT Minister for Homelessness and Housing Services, believes that homelessness should be rare, brief, and nonrecurring. She intends to achieve just that in the ACT, and is developing policies to target systemic issues and social determinants to end homelessness for good.

Penny Wong (who has made a good start as foreign minister) needs to intervene quickly to ensure Australia keeps a strategic piece of real estate only 950km from Cairns from becoming a Chinese People’s Liberation Army naval/air base; a dagger pointed to the heart of Australia. Twenty-one beautiful little islands off the east coast of PNG are owned by an Australian who wants $36 million for them and the only buyer at this stage is a Communist Chinese company. The owner wants to sell them to Australia, but no one seems interested. They are also home to millions of nesting sea turtles and would make an ideal sea turtle sanctuary. If the federal government buys them in a joint venture with, say, the World Wildlife Fund, who could run them as a sea turtle nesting sanctuary, it would be a win-win for conservation and Australia’s security. You need to get in quick, Penny. Closer to home, Albo’s jobs and skills summit starts this week. Whilst it’s better for the opposition to go to anything the government is hosting, I can understand Peter Dutton not going but am pleased the National Party is. In politics, it’s good common sense to back good policy from the other side. Within 10 minutes of Jon Stanhope as Chief Minister announcing a new Cotter dam in 2007, as opposition leader I backed him. When asked If I had any criticism, all I said was “what took you so long, Jon?” Conversely, when Jon was opposition leader and shadow Attorney-General in 2001, he backed my tightening of the bail laws to ensure criminals who committed crimes whilst on bail were remanded in custody. So, if sensible outcomes arise from the summit, the Nationals and Liberals should back them. I would urge the Nationals to back the sensible announcements of new coal, gas and oil explorations announced by that most sensible Labor resources minister, Madeleine King. The dangers of the summit are unreasonable demands for excessive wage rises that industry and Australia can’t afford, and excessive wage rises for public servants who have already benefited by being cosseted during the lockdowns, unlike struggling small family businesses that have been decimated.

I am a strong believer in unions to protect workers and fight for their legitimate rights, but not to place an unbearable strain on the Australian economy by making unrealistic wage claims and taking destructive strike action if they don’t get their own way. It would be good if the resource unions also pushed hard for a bit of realism in the government’s unrealistic and hurried push to get rid of coal and gas before we can actually store solar and wind power. Whilst some groups that should have been included were not, handled properly, a lot of good can come out of the summit. Handled poorly, many workers, businesses and ordinary Australians will be the losers. Editor’s note: The opinions expressed in this column are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect those of Canberra Weekly.

Samuel Johnson is coming back to Canberra in September and needs your help in Love Your Sister’s mission to support top cancer research. Image supplied.

On Friday 9 September, the philanthropist will host An Evening with Samuel Johnson at the Eastlake Gungahlin footy club. Canberrans can expect a crassly fun hour, with a touch of earnestness.OnSunday 11 September, from 10am to 3pm, he is returning to the Lyneham Netball Courts to put on a family fun day lollapalooza, which Samuel assures will be the highlight for him this trip.

He said that if there was one message Connie would want done up in lights this time around, it would be to stay vigilant.

Last time we saw Gold Logie winner Samuel Johnson, he was standing on a giant sparkly love heart made from $2.5 million worth of 5 cent coins, alongside an even greater treasure, his sister Connie. Ten thousand supporters of Connie’s brave and public battle with breast cancer gathered at the Lyneham Netball Courts in 2017 to set this world record in just 24 hours and raise funds for cancer research.

The highlight of the humdinger will be the treasure hunt Samuel himself orchestrates. Before he gets to town, Samuel is on the lookout for local businesses to support the Family Fun Day by becoming sponsors.

Since its inception in 2012, “Australia’s hardestworking cancer-vanquishing charity” has raised over $15 million for medical research. While Samuel guarantees fun during his visit, his mission remains at the forefront, to tell the country about precision medicine.

“It’s a gold coin donation to get in, and we have a ton of events to put a smile on your dial. There will be live music, magic, face painting, snow play, two jumping castles… it just goes on and on.”

“By eliminating false lines of treatment, we can save loved ones and heaps of cash on medicines that don’t work.”

Samuel Johnson returns to Canberra NEWS

Five years since Connie’s death, Samuel is returning to Canberra. In the lead up to his arrival, heannounced his search for like-minded folk to stand alongside Love Your Sister as the charity strives to vanquish cancer for good.

“It’s great to be coming back to Connie’s hometown,” he told CW. “Last time we had a fundraiser in Canberra, it went berserk. Now that my sister’s gone, I’m terrified that no one will show up.” After Connie’s diagnosis, Samuel quit acting to start raising as much as he could to fund a cure. Set on continuing momentum, he’s “going great guns” in his long-awaited return to the ACT.

What makes Canberra Advice different?

Music tutor Theo, who is also a political science student at ANU, leads the welcome song. Each student is greeted by name and invited to sing ‘hello’ back. When the song finishes, students are asked how they are, what they have been up to since their last meet-up, and if they would like to share anything from their week. During this time, the amount of care and investment in their students from the tutors shines through. Theo asks one of the students if he went to his favourite café and got his jumbo muffin and coffee from a fridge, while Kate says she has a feeling it is someone’s birthday soon, then everyone joins in to sing happy birthday to their classmate.

The Canberra Symphony Orchestra’s 2023 season, Chroma, is a kaleidoscope of colour and music, chief conductor and artistic director Jessica Cottis explains.

Scriabin invented a clavier à lumières (a keyboard with lights), each note associated with a different colour.

The season features several other works the CSO has not performed before: a divertimento from Stravinsky’s ballet Le Baiser de la fée (March); and Swiss composer Frank Martin’s Concerto for seven wind instruments, timpani, percussion and string orchestra and Korngold’s ballet/pantomime Der Schneemann (both August).

The CSO will play lesser-performed works by some familiar, well-loved composers, like Beethoven’s ballet Creatures of Prometheus (March), or Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 1 Winter Daydreams (August). Perto Do Ar, Simon James Phillips’ 50-minute, immersive, surround-sound work, for the CSO brass situated around the Atrium of the National Museum of Australia (July), will be a once-in-alifetime experience not to miss, Cottis says. “It’s a fascinating, vibrant season, with so much for our Canberra audiences to explore and enjoy.”

Rimsky-Korsakov was a synaesthete, who saw colour when he heard sound, Cottis remarks. His orchestral tone poem, Scheherazade, a set of tableaux inspired by tales of the sea, is composed in E major, which he experienced as a deep, dark blue.

For the same concert, Miriama Young has written what Cottis terms “a vibrant and thrilling concert opener”. The June concert presents Australian works inspired by Red Desert Sand. Didjeridu player William Barton will perform his Square Circles Beneath the Red Desert Sand, written about the spirits of his Kalkadunga country (Mount Isa). The concert also features Ros Bandt’s electroacoustic Red; Peter Sculthorpe’s String Quartet No. 7: Red landscape; and Katy Abbott’s Re-echo for vibraphone and cello. A new work by Aaron Wyatt, a Noongar violist and scholar, will be performed, written for the same instrumentation as Barton’s: string quartet, percussion, and didjeridu.

The season is “centred on composers with a close connection and a special affinity with colour”.

The November concert is a celebration of Living Green, featuring Dvorák’s concert overture In Nature’s Realm, Richard Strauss’s Four Last Songs, and Sibelius’s Symphony No. 7 in C major and Karelia Suite. Louisa Trewartha has written a new piece for the CSO brass. Connor D’Netto is the CSO’s first Composerin-Connection. D’Netto is “taking the musical world by storm”, Cottis says. Another new work (September) is by Yuwaalaraay storyteller Nardi Simpson – “an evocative and energetic musical creation from, inspired by the interaction of light and the stories it tells us,” Cottis says.

“Like many great works of visual art, these programs are shaped by the colours and contours of the natural world, from the deepest greens of Sibelius’s northern forests to the dizzying vastness of red desert on our own continent.” Electric Blue (April 2023), for instance, features Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade, his symphonic suite inspired by the Arabian Nights, and Scriabin’s Piano Concerto in F-sharp minor – the first time the CSO has performed this “lushly lyrical” work.

What do you get when you combine three friends, a closed down brothel, and 100,000 coffee cups? The answer is Fyshwick’s newest café and sandwich bar, Happy Ending. Opened in a newly renovated building, the café serves up “quickies” (aka lunch in hurry), consisting of locally roasted coffee and a weekly menu of rotating sandwiches, sweets, and pastries. Happy Ending began as a joke between friends, Kent Nhan and Greg Lally of XO and ILY restaurants, and Frank Iannelli of Alpha Fresh Foods. When Frank and Greg, also partners in plant-based venture Vood, were in the market for a business unit, the cheapest they could find in Fyshwick was the old locale of infamous night-time destination, Lollipop Lounge.

“We weren’t sure [the name] was going to be received the best way, but actually everyone’s loving it because of the history of the building.”“It’sabit of a happy ending for the building as well, which gets to live on in a new format,” Kent added.

“Meanwhile, ILY, previously known as Morning Glory, had transitioned to night-only after lockdowns,” Frank, 35, told CW. “The only problem was they had already commissioned 100,000 coffeeThecups.”planto turn the coffee cups and spare room in the unit into a café named Happy Ending began as a “complete joke between friends, we never intended for it to be serious”.

Bill Stefaniak’s response to A. Kusta’s criticism of his support/sympathy of animal welfare was a heartening read (CW, 18 August 2022, p20). His closing suggestion to donate to RSPCA and perhaps sponsor a koala was almost perfect. He was responsible for increasing penalties for animal cruelty from 12 months to 2 years in 2004 while shadow Attorney-General. So, my question is what about the kangaroo cruelty during the annual cull, Bill? How any person can claim this is not cruelty, despite claims of “experts” that this is humane, is totally unacceptable. We must stop the killing.

- R. Aylott, Ainslie ACT When I started working in a regional office of the old Department of Social Security in the late 1970s, I was shocked to discover that many staff saw themselves as ruthless custodians of the public purse. The Robodebt debacle was the inevitable result of that exact same culture of callous penny-pinching. All it took to go exponential was the advent of information technology. Many Canberrans do not know that the ACT government has its own first cousin of Robodebt, which it is just as wildly inaccurate and even more cruel. It is a legislated and automated calculator of the number of kangaroos to be killed here every year. This year, it was revealed that the government’s kangaroo killing program is gut-wrenchingly cruel, and routinely estimates that there are four times more kangaroos than are actually present on Canberra reserves. Consequently, the kill calculator requires that kangaroos are killed much faster than they can possibly replace themselves. It will continue to do so until the calculator is ditched and repealed, or until the last kangaroo is dead. The relationship between cruelty to humans and cruelty to animals has never been clearer than in the relationship between Robodebt and

The Canberra Raiders will head into the final round of the season inside the top 8 after thrashing Manly 48-6 at GIO Stadium on Saturday 27 August. Canberra dominated from start to finish, scoring nine tries to one and racking up their biggest score since round 15, 2018. Hudson Young continued his brilliant year with two tries, while Jamal Fogarty, Sebastian Kris, Jordan Rapana, Xavier Savage, Tom Starling, Corey Harawira-Naera and Albert Hopate all scored one try each. The win saw the Raiders leapfrog the Broncos into eighth spot, with both sides on 28 points, but Canberra’s points difference is superior by 43. It leaves the Raiders in the box seat to play finals, with the club essentially just needing to beat the Tigers at Leichardt Oval on Sunday 4 September to secure eighth spot. The Raiders will play the final game of the round, so will know exactly what they must do before their match starts.

TO THE EDITOR the ACT’s “Robokill”. Both are offspring of the same unholy marriage between a culture of cruelty and misguided faith in poorly constructed information technology. - F. Seymour, Queanbeyan NSW A. Kusta asked some questions of me in their letter (CW, 25 August 2022, p14) and to state my position 1.on:Live animal exports: At the very least, travelling conditions must be decent. I would prefer not to have live exports but appreciate the cultural issues involved.

3. Culling kangaroos: Whilst the culling of kangaroos has its place, in the ACT recently it seems to have gone off the rails and I support animal welfare activists’ calls for a proper enquiry. It’s timely. Finally, B. Larsen (CW, 25 August 2022, p14) accused me of tarnishing the most vulnerable in our community as criminals. I didn’t say that. It is criminals who are cruelly exploiting our vulnerable disabled citizens [via the NDIS], which I find disgraceful.

It is the first time in the club’s history they will play their first home game of the season in Canberra. GWS will be seeking their first win of the year after a narrow 7-point loss to the Bulldogs in the season opener last weekend.

2. Horse racing and greyhound racing: Again, animal welfare must be paramount but I know quite a few horse and greyhound owners; they love their animals and treat them like family. Also, the horses and greyhounds seem to like to race. In both 1 and 2, strong regulations must be applied and enforced to prevent any animal cruelty.

Hoping to meet her is Josh Huxtable, a 27-year-old demolition worker who lives in Canberra. After the troubling breakdown of his previous relationship, Huxtable says he spent a lot of time casually dating but didn’t want to commit. That began to change, and after seeing Farmer Paige’s video, felt drawn to her and knew that he was ready to take a big step. Throughout his time on the show, Huxtable says, he was definitely looking for something serious; Paige seemed like a great person with whom he could have a lot in common.Having grown up in the NSW Southern Highlands, he wasn’t too concerned about a culture shock at the farm as his great-grandfather managed cattle farms, where Huxtable was exposed to animals at an early age. Not that it means he is good with animals, just that he has a vague idea of how to take care of them, he laughs.

Canberrans hit the country to find love in Farmer Wants a Wife

“I kind of knew what to expect. I think some people probably didn’t to some degree, but I was 100 per cent happy and comfortable with no reception and dirt. “ She isn’t too worried about how she will come across to audiences. Laughing, she says she is probably too nice. She says the editors can only do so much with what she has said and done. She is happy with how she acted on the show, knowing she was there for Will; however, some may not have been.

The other Canberra-based contestant hopes to head to Farmer Will’s sheep and crop farm at Berriwillock, in north-western Victoria. Sahara McLellan, a 25-year-old Seaman Maritime Personnel Operator in the Navy, moved to Canberra for work last year. Having watched the last few seasons of Farmer Wants a Wife, she decided to take a chance and apply for the show after seeing Farmer Will’s video.

“I was taking it very seriously; I think out of probably anyone who was there, I was the most serious in terms of being there.”

Women competing for the heart of one man can incite jealousy, McLellan says. Because of her previous relationships, she struggles to open up to people, and she didn’t want to let jealousy on top of reticence harm her chances of connecting with Farmer“YouWill.just have to really stay grounded and confident, and not compare yourself to other people. You will just go crazy if you over-analyse everything.”Growing up, McLellan fondly remembers the dairy farm her father’s friend owned where she would stay on a regular basis. Weekends spent riding motorbikes, splashing in the river, and having no cell reception helped prepare her for farm life.

However, there was an element of fear heading into the show, as he worried about putting himself out there and the thought of people at home watching and judging him.

30 canberraweekly.com.au

“There’s some form of nervousness when you’re in that position, but when you’re in, you just have to get it done. The one-on-one dating, actually getting some work done.” Huxtable is grateful for his time on the show – he has remained good friends with some of the guys – and the newfound confidence it has given him.“Putting myself into that situation where you are forced to have dates, surrounded by people who are encouraging you, it does give you a place to start fresh again,” he says.

This season is slightly di erent, as one of the farmers looking for love is a woman, a first for the show: Farmer Paige, a sheep, cattle, and crop farmer from Cassilis in the central west of NSW.

“I’m used to getting my hands dirty, learning about it, and giving it a go.”

Two Canberra locals head to the country hoping to find love in the newest season of Farmer Wants a Wife. Airing on Channel 7 this Father’s Day, Sunday 4 September, the show follows contestants as they travel to regional areas around Australia to meet their potential future spouse on the land. Spanning 11 seasons, the show has so far helped nine couples find wedded bliss.

“I would say the majority of people that were there were there for the right reasons. I think some people may have been there for a good time.”

“He is very handsome, and I was just drawn to him. I thought he seemed really down to earth; he seemed funny. I read his Q&A, and I just thought: why not? I started the application, and then I sat on it for a week,” she smiles. Before applying for the show, McLellan had been single for four-and-a-half years after previous boyfriends has been unfaithful. She took that time to work on herself and, though she had met a few great men, wasn’t ready to commit. Now, she feels ready to settle down, and Farmer Will could be the right man.

Earth Canvas is a touring exhibition pairing Australian artists with regenerative farmers between the Murray and Murrumbidgee rivers. The free multimedia showcase is on until 30 EmpathyOctober.with the land is at the forefront of the works in this project developed by Earth Canvas: Art in Ag, an organisation connecting people to the land through art projects, talks, and open days. Gillian Sanbrook is the driving force behind the organisation; having worked in agriculture since leaving school, the cattle farmer has a deep connection to the land she manages. Being associated with farmers who put production above all else, she has seen the impact these practices can have on our environment. Sanbrook hopes the project can reconnect consumers back to the land that provides for us and help us care about what happens to it. She said she knew artists were the right people to highlight the importance of the way we care for our land as they are often at the forefront of environmental or social“Weissues.need to learn from artists. They are like the canary in a coal mine; they often see things we don’t,” Sanbrook says. Adding an artist and farm with each new stop, the exhibition has reached its final stop in Canberra. Our chosen local artist was Alexander Boynes, who spent time on The Millpost farm near Bungendore, NSW, which is owned and cared for by the Watson family. When discussing regeneration, Boynes says it is important the conversation includes the regeneration of relationships and community; to find a positive way forward for both Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians. In what he says is his gentlest work, Boynes centred himself on the farm’s Indigenous axe quarry, which the Watsons have given back to its traditional owners. The quarry is not portrayed in the piece; rather, the viewer sees the farm from the perspective of standing in the quarry.

An inspiring art initiative exploring the beauty within agriculture has opened at the National Museum of Australia.

“The things that are not seen are just as important as the things that are. We have a very painful history and I think walking gently into the future is the positive way to go,” Boynes says.

“A character has a great line and says ‘the student in student journalism is important. It is important to acknowledge we are university students and that is a different environment; it is a microcosm in different ways,” she says.

Rogers agrees, pointing out that university allows students a place to try and fail, a place to be confident, passionate, and sure of the change you could create in the world. He laughs when he admits then you realise everyone is making it up as we go Theyalong.both agree you don’t need any experience at a university to enjoy the play. The characters are real, with quirks that you will be able to recognise in people you know, while Rogers says Canberrans will appreciate the multiple layers, having lived in the political capital.

The newest play from Canberra Youth Theatre (CYT) explores the inner workings of the political systems at universities. How To Vote! is a witty piece of work that people of all ages can appreciate, and hits the stage at The Playhouse, Canberra Theatre, 7-10 September. The play was commissioned a couple of years ago by CYT CEO and artistic director Luke Rogers as he wanted to create work that explored young adults’ relationship to democracy and politics. Rogers, who is also the play’s director, says he wanted to delve into the culture and systems that exist at a university – be it student politics, journalism, or theatre. “It’s a lot of fun. It’s a big political satire; we have been referring to it as House of Cards/Secret City meets Sex Education. It is a beast,” Rogers says. How to Vote! is set in a deliberately unspecified university, and the audience will be able to pick up contradictions in the setting. Election season is here, and the previous head of the student association has made the mysterious decision not to run. Three potential candidates step up to the plate: Lizzie, a feminist activist; Giles, a conservative private school graduate; and Monica, who just wants the hole she fell in to be filled. We follow their election campaign, when things come to a head during a tumultuous event no one sees coming. Along the way, we witness backstabbing, secrets, and a diligent student journalist who is trying to uncover the truth. Having worked with writer Julian Larnach before, Rogers knew he was the right person to bring the vision to life. Larnach was an editor at his university’s newspaper, is politically active, and has a lot of experience working with youth arts organisations.Sittingproudly in CYT’s 50th season, How To Vote! features around 30 university-aged people both on stage and behind the scenes. Rogers says it isn’t kids playing politics; the play is a showcase of what youth theatre can create, challenging the perception that youth theatre is somehow less than or only a precursor to “the real arts”. “They are still artists; they just happen to be young people. We are still real theatre, we are still real artists, creating real work,” agrees Sophie Tallis, CYT resident artist and assistant director of TIME OUT this

Theproduction.ideathat youth are less than is echoed in the work. Tallis says that characters are grappling with the tension of being seen as student politicians or journalists, when they want to be seen as serious. However, she says, in some situations it is important to have that learning title.

The candidates line up for the student council presidential election in How To Vote! Photo: Adam McGrath H Creations. “It looks at the political systems that currently exist but also from within it does raise some really interesting questions about how far we are willing to go for power, for change.” Rogers also says the audience will be encouraged to exercise their democratic right. . While Evie’s life in America Spring is finally here, and seniors are being encouraged to step outdoors this Saturday to the Never Too Old to Play Outside event at Haig Park in Braddon. After a cold and wet winter, COTA ACT and the University of Canberra recognise the importance of our older generations getting back outside. They have worked together to present a day of free information, entertainment, and socialising. There are many benefits to spending time outside as we enter our golden years. Some studies have shown that staying physically and mentally active later in life reduces the risk of dementia, while sunlight can also boost your vitamin D, enhance moods and strengthen bones. With live music, games, performances, food, and much more happening throughout the seniors’ day, it really offers something for the whole family. The Invitation (MA15+) In an English mansion, a troubled woman leaps from a balcony. Flashing over to America decades later, Evie (Nathalie Emmanuel) struggles in the aftermath of losing her mother. Evie’s best friend convinces her to undergo a DNA test in search of a living relative. Soon, long-lost English cousin Oliver (Hugh Skinner) arrives to invite Evie to a wedding at the family’s English mansion.Thefilm is dripping with a gothic ambiance, with dark shadows, blue tones and beautiful architecture filling the frame. Elements of the classic Hammer horrors are evident, with a modern twist in the vein of The Nun and The Curse of La Llorona

showingNow TIME OUT

Seniors invited to play outside at Haig Park is bright and beautiful, it is easy to understand her yearning for a family. On her arrival at the classic English mansion, however, Evie experiences a clash of cultures and statuses. Evie is out of her element and realm of understanding of the danger she has placed herself in. Like Samara Weaving’s character in Ready or Not, Evie eventually learns that she is a pawn in a much larger, sinister supernatural game. While the mood and setting are suitable for the chosen genre, it is a shame the film does not follow up on its own strong promises regarding class, status, sensuality, and gore, choosing instead to nullify its voice, impact, and, consequently, its memorability. Verdict: A harmless, fun, but ultimately forgettable jump-scare horror that disappointedly ignores the potential it had to be much more. 2.5 stars. - Luke Moviethemovieclub.netMcWilliamsviewedatDendy.

Two Nights in Lisbon by Chris Pavone Head of Zeus, $29.99 Chris Pavone is one of my favourite spy authors. His books have a Len Deighton subtlety about them, and always dazzle with their clever plots. His latest, Two Nights in Lisbon, is another twisty feast about an American woman who wakes up in Lisbon to find that her husband has gone with no note or explanation. The police and the American Embassy are initially reluctant to help, but when it emerges that the man may not be who he claims to be, their interest is piqued. This is a briskly paced and very tense thriller, with some great descriptions of Lisbon.

The Secret by Alexandra Smith Macmillan, $36.99

Recent years have seen a bizarre procession of political scandals and personal failings, but probably none have been as unexpected as Gladys Berejiklian’s fall from grace. For months on end, she was a constant on television screens calmly guiding her state through extreme weather disasters and the onset of the COVID pandemic. Well respected and publicly very popular, she seemed politically invincible in early 2021. Yet by October she was gone after a succession of stunning revelations. Journalist Alexandra Smith’s well-informed account of the last weeks of Berejiklian’s premiership is a fascinating and insightful recapping of what happened.

The sinking of the Dunbar near the cliffs of The Gap at Sydney’s South Head in 1857 remains one of the worst maritime disasters in Australia’s history. All but one of the 123 crew and passengers perished during the storm that smashed the celebrated sailing ship onto the rocks. Larry Winter’s The Shipwreck is a captivating and well-written account of what happened. Drawing on a wealth of contemporaneous material, Winter paints a vivid picture of the Dunbar’s voyage to Australia and the events of that night. He also clearly articulates the repercussions of the sinking and its effect on the new colony. Recommended.

Nuts don’t make you fat

Nuts may provide up to 26 per cent less kilojoules than previously thought, with new Australian research highlighting a flaw in the snack’s kilojoule count.

The University of Wollongong (UOW) study found the actual kilojoules absorbed from nuts were significantly less than kilojoules stated on food labels. The Atwater system has been used globally to calculate kilojoules for over a century and is the mandated measuring system for Australian food labels. However, lead researcher Cassandra Nikodijevic says it doesn’t consider how our bodies metabolise food.

REAL ESTATE SUBURB PROFILE canberraweeklyrealestate.com.au 52 canberraweekly.com.au

Apart from the potential for excellent capital gains on commercial properties in Fyshwick, Mr Dunne says he used to work in the suburb himself and “found it awesome”.

“The quite trendy ONA Coffee House Cafe in Wollongong Street is a hub of activity, and there’s plenty of places popping up – more and more popping up every day,” he says.

“There might be a stigma that office users prefer the Triangle for easy access, but it makes more financial sense to be a business in Fyshwick.” eat The Melted Toasted Sandwich Emporium is a famous Fyshwick foodie haunt. It’s well worth the visit for a delectable toasted sandwich –possibly the best you’ve ever had. drink Capital Brewing Co’s beers are made on-site and are genuinely fantastic. Pull up a chair and spend a few hours tasting the 12 different tap beers, grab a few to take home for later, or book a tour to learn what goes on behind the scenes. shop Canberra Outlet quite literally has everything you need. Groceries? Tick. Clothing stores? Sure does. Homewares? Yep! Takeaway? Most definitely. It’s your one-stop shopping centre. café If you’re an artisan bakery connoisseur, check out Wildflour in Fyshwick. This master bakery and café is a delightful, sunlit space, with a delectable selection of coffee and culinary favourites.

In eastern Canberra lies the industrial turned electric shopping hub suburb of Fyshwick. At first glance, Fyshwick may seem like a charmless commercial area. But over the past two decades, the suburb has been reinventing itself and now an array of quirky coffee shops, unique vintage stores, and entrepreneurial ventures can be found on almost every street.

Real estate agent at Belle Property Commercial Canberra, Nathan Dunn, says he believes Fyshwick is Canberra’s hottest commercial suburb.

One of Canberra’s most beautiful nature spots, the Jerrabomberra Wetlands, is located in Fyshwick and offers beautiful walks and plenty of birdwatching opportunities.

Photo: Kerrie Brewer. “It may not appear glamorous, but industrial property in Australia is undergoing its biggest boom in history, and Fyshwick is the most central industrial suburb in that boom,” Mr Dunn says. “High vacancy rates in Canberra have never been this tight and prices in both rents and sales values are going crazy. Quite frankly, commercial is usually a bit more flat and stable. “Dairy Flats Road precinct is only going to get better and there’s massive plans for Molonglo [River]. I think there’s going to be a really cool mixed-use precinct running to Kingston at the back of Fyshwick. “If I were a commercial real estate investor, Fyshwick would be the suburb for me.”

“The Canberra Outlet Centre in Fyshwick is popular too. Workers in Fyshwick always found it popular for office users because of the reasonable rent, easy carparking, and convenient location.
