Reasons to be grateful this past week include the remarkable life and times of Queen Elizabeth II, witnessing the proclamation of King Charles III – complete with smoking ceremony, Aunty Violet’s welcome to country, a 21-gun salute, and more – at Parliament House, and the Forest Sculpture Gallery launch at the National Arboretum Canberra.

Australia mourns the passing of an era with the death of Queen Elizabeth II on 8 September, at the age of 96.

How fitting it is that Canberra’s own Aunty Val – 2022 Senior Australian of the Year, Valmai Dempsey – has been invited to represent “everyday Australians” at the Queen’s funeral in London on 19 September.

Now in her early 70s, Aunty Val began her life of service when she was just 10, starting as a cadet volunteer for St John Ambulance while still in primary school. Much like Her Majesty, she has devoted her life to the service of others – and continues to do so. If only “everyday” Aussies (including me) were more like Aunty Val. I wish!

Two years later, the Queen would return to open the National Gallery of Australia. On a warm Sunday, she was photographed while on public walkabout in Canberra, surrounded by enamoured locals.

Reigning from 6 February 1952, until her death on 8 September 2022, Queen Elizabeth II visited Canberra 14 times out of her total 16 trips to Australia, becoming the first reigning sovereign to visit when she toured in 1954. Thursday 22 September has been designated a one-off national public holiday in Australia to mourn Her Majesty’s passing.

An extended royal tour of Australia was made as part of the Queen’s Silver Jubilee. Old Parliament House was central to the royal tour when the Queen was visiting, seen here delivering a speech at a government reception.

The Queen visits Canberra: A timeline

On her inaugural visit, the Queen and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh visited 57 towns and cities in just 58 days. On her first trip to Canberra, which would become her most visited Australian city, the Queen opened a session of parliament at what is now known as Old Parliament House. For many Canberrans, a new National Convention Centre may not seem directly relevant. Isn’t it somewhere for people from out of town to have meetings and conferences? The average punter believes they may never go there, and might struggle to fathom why we need to invest millions into a facility.

A national centre could be an iconic place that every Australian visits and connects with in their lifetime as part of a visit to their national capital, along with the Australian Parliament and our other great cultural institutions.Andanational centre can be a public space, full of life, and constantly utilised by both locals and visitors for concerts, sport, and a whole range of gatherings and activities.

Over recent weeks, public discussion has centred on the fate of a city stadium, but there is another important discussion to be had about the urgent need for a world-class meeting space befitting the national capital and an aspiring global city.

While the public discourse seems to be obsessed with cost, the return on investment from a world-class meeting facility in Canberra would be enormous. Growing our business events capability will help “turbo-charge” the overall visitor economy and support economic

growth by attracting industries such as defence, cyber, health, higher education, space, and government services.

It can provide a venue where Australia as a nation can engage in discussions and dialogue about the issues of national importance, and a “neutral ground” for hosting the big discussions that impact us now and into the future.

God is recognised to be the truth or Principle of life – the thing that when understood and lived, makes our life work out for us. The Bible tells us this God/Principle is Love, ‘God is love’ it says in 1 John. Love is the thing that makes life work right for us. The Love that is God is the love which Jesus expressed, unwavering and unconditional; that was a divine expression.

It’s science because it is based on a set of spiritual principles – laws relating to the nature of God and creation – that can be applied with expected, consistent results.

It was sad, but perhaps not surprising, to see some in this country, especially the usual suspects amongst the Federal Green members of parliament, come out with churlish, inappropriate, and just plain ignorant statements against this great lady. Also, calls for a republic at this time when she has not even been buried yet are in appalling bad taste. Even avid republican Peter FitzSimons says now is not the time to talk of a republic. So much for a new era of civility in the federal parliament!

ACT school student apprentices get a Head Start

He is an automotive trades apprentice at CIT Fyshwick – one of 50 public school students taking part in Head Start, an ACT Government pilot program where they can trial a trade before they finish their formal education, Education Minister Yvette BerryTheexplained.Australian School-based Apprenticeship (ASbA) initiative provides a tailored school-based apprenticeship and traineeship program that matches a student’s job interests with a local business in need of skilled workers. Education ACT pays the student’s work experience and supports them to finish both high school and their ASbA, taking three years if they choose.

The ACT Government has committed $2.2 million over three years (to 2023–24) to implement the program.

ASbA participant Charlie Steer with Yvette Berry and Adrian Gibbons from CIT at the launch of the Head Start Pilot Program at CIT Fyshwick.

Five industries are taking part in the program: besides automotive trades, the others are hospitality, light automotive, construction/ carpentry, and light metal fabrication. (Ms Berry plans to expand it to other trades.)

“Getting real life experience can be the best way to set students up for their careers. This program could be the perfect launching pad to pave the way for many young people across the ACT.”“Idon’t really know what I want to do at the moment, so having a broad spectrum of what I could do is really beneficial,” Charlie, who is in Year 10 at Wanniassa High School, said. “I get to see different parts of the world, different careers.

“This gets people into a trade,

“They’re not jumping in with two feet straight into a full apprenticeship with all the responsibilities and pressures of being a full-time employee,” Mr Gibbons said. “They’re coming here and getting what we’re delivering them, plus picking up what the fulltime apprentices are doing as well, and making connections.”

The Head Start program supports apprentices to remain in their chosen trade.

but also allows them to have a ‘head start’ with their qualifications and their career, as well as their Year 12 certificate,” Ms Berry said.

He teaches automotive and metals, and spray painting for automotive smash repairs. A

group includes the three stages of apprentices, both mainstream and ASbA, from almost self-reliant Stage Threes to novice Stage Ones –what Mr Gibbons terms ‘self-paced flexible delivery’.

Charlie hopes to learn basic car body repair skills, “so that when I do have my own car, later down the line, if it gets scratched or dinged or bumped up, I can somewhat try to repair it myself with some level of knowledge, rather than just putting a plunger and hot water on it. I want a good knowledge of how to repair it, but not screw it up even more!”

“There’sstay.such a shortage for all trades, but automotive and smash repairs is really short,” Charlie’s CIT mentor, Adrian Gibbons, said.

A smaller cohort of Stage Ones can get better time from their teacher than a whole class would, Mr Gibbons thinks. The lower-level entry units cover the first six to 12 months in a smash repair shop: safety, tools and equipment, basic priming and preparation.

After two years of COVID and interruptions to education, young people are uncertain what careers they want, Ms Berry said. Many apprentices move on after their first year or decide to do something else. Meanwhile, employers are desperate for workers, and want workers to

“In the future, I want to have more of a physics-based career, maybe not something in the auto industry – but if this goes any further, and I seem to enjoy it more, then I’m more than happy to take this on as a full career.”

Once a week, 16-year-old Charlie Steer puts down his schoolbooks and picks up car repair tools instead.

“All employers are screaming out for new apprentices and new employees. The feedback we’re getting from them is that they need more apprentices, but they want apprentices that they can train, mould, and keep long-term.”

The Canberra Raiders have kept their NRL finals campaign alive with a thrilling 28-20 victory over the Melbourne Storm in an elimination final at AAMI Park on Saturday 10 September.

“We have all been confronted by what we saw in the State of the Environment report that was released earlier this year,” said Ms“TheVassarotti.ACThas 30 native animals and plants listed as ‘threatened’, including the Earless Dragon, the Superb Parrot, the iconic Gang-gang Cockatoo, the Northern Corroboree Frog, and the Ginninderra Peppercress.

“We are particularly excited to be looking at how we can connect up these sites so that our [threatened] species can actually move through the landscape,” said Ms Vassarotti.

Meanwhile, Raiders star prop Joseph Tapine has claimed his first Meninga Medal as the club’s best player in 2022 after a brilliant individual season. Tapine finished on 44 votes, 22 votes clear of Jack Wighton in second place.

On National Threatened Species Day, at the Birdscaping landscape plantings in O’Connor, Minister for Environment Rebecca Vassarotti announced the ACT Government’s $2.95 million investment from the 2022-23 budget to restore 20 sites across the city into critical habitat zones.

If you are wondering what these critical habitat zones might look like, Dr Kathryn Eyles of Canberra Ornithologists Group said “clump-style, highly diverse planting” would yield top benefits for birds, including Gang-gangs.

“If we go back a hundred or so years, the primary threat [to native habitat] was grazing,” she said.“In more recent years, it’s urban development. As Canberra has spread and suburbs have intensified, many of our species have lost their habitat, or been left in small unconnected patches of the landscape where they can’t persist in the long term.

“[Layers of] grasses, midstorey shrubs, and taller acacias provide a diverse habitat for small birds, like thornbills and willy wagtails, as well as nectar for larger honey eaters,” said Dr Eyles.

Canberrans can join the effort and fashion their garden or nature strip into a critical habitat zone, by densely planting native shrubs, including spiky shrubs, and native wattle.

With our beloved Gang-gang Cockatoos under threat, this National Threatened Species Day (7 September) was tough for Canberrans. However, there may be some good news in the works.

The first 20 sites for the new Urban Biodiversity Initiative are still being mapped out, aiming for ecological connectivity across the city, and nearness to community groups that would be willing to look after the habitats long-term. Park Care groups and the local Ngunnawal community will be contacted to advise on potential locations.

“Within the city, what we have left is big trees and mown grass, which doesn’t provide what most of our woodland birds need. What they need is structural complexity,” Ms Cooney said.

Rosie Cooney, head of

“We also have three vitally important, threatened ecological communities: Natural Temperate Grasslands, Yellow Box/Red Gum Grassy Woodland, and our Bogs and Associated Fens.”

The Eels are coming off a 27-8 loss against Penrith last week and will be desperate to avoid going out in straight sets.

The Fool Factory’s Rockabillies, featuring Big Bad Ted and Long Tall Sal, are just one of the acts celebrating the ‘Sounds of Spring’ at this year’s Floriade in Commonwealth Park. Photographed at Ainslie Main Hall, Ainslie Arts Centre.

Pandemic restrictions in 2020 and 2021 saw Australia’s biggest festival of spring take to garden beds and wheelbarrows across the ACT. Now it has returned to its home ground where it can provide an extra boost for the local economy. In 2019, over 500,000 people walked through the festival’s gates, around half of whom were from interstate or overseas.

Entry to Floriade is free during the day, while NightFest and some events are ticketed.

offer with some of Canberra’s finest food and drink options bringing their goods. Capital Brewing Co. host brews in their Beer Garden, Underground Spirits keep it classy in the Clink! Gin Garden and local wineries show off the fruits of their labor in the Wine Garden.

The festival is pulling out all the stops to attract crowds this year with special guest Gardening Australia host and much-loved celebrity green thumb, Costa Georgiadis sharing his joy of nature at Stage 88 on Sunday 25 September. Guests will be able to attend meet and greets with Costa before and after his stage appearance.

After dark from 29 September to 2 October, Floriade is serious about you having a good time when NightFest returns with two flavours to choose from – Relax or Invigorate. On Thursday and Sunday, guests are invited to sit back, take it easy, enjoy the soothing sounds of the performers, sip on a glass of wine, and grab a massage; while on Friday and Saturday, an electric party vibe invites guests to groove to the tunes or get the party started with jaw-dropping performances. (NightFest is a paid ticketed

In another first for Floriade, guests are invited to take a piece of the magic home with them in the Great Big Bulb Dig. After the festival wraps up, 5,000 people will be allowed back into the flower beds to dig up some bulbs. Bags for the dig will be sold for $15 at Floriade, with all profits going to local charities, SEE-Change and Raw Potential. Don’t miss out on your chance to score a doggy bag of floral delights.Speaking of dogs, grab the leash and bring your pooch down to give their nose a workout amongst the flowers. The beloved Dog’s Day Out marks the final day of festivities on Sunday 16 October.

Stop and hear the sounds of spring at Floriade 2022

Floriade is back with a bang; the bang of a drum, that is, as the festival’s 35th installment praises the ‘Sounds of Spring’. For the first time since 2019, the month-long festivities return to Commonwealth Park from 17 September to 16 October.

Returning for the first time since their formative appearance to celebrate Floriade’s 2005 ‘Rock’n’ Roll

With such a great line-up, Floyd – the festival’s bright pink gnome – has invited all his family to celebrate. They packed their bags and 35 pink gnomes travelled to the Capital but have got lost on the way. Floyd has called on everyone to help him find them, with hints that they are probably hiding out at venues around Canberra. The ‘Find Floyd’s Family’ competition is a first for the festival and encourages guests to scan QR codes to go in the running for prizes, such as a two-night stay at the Hyatt Hotel

in Bloom’ theme is the Fool Factory Rockabillies – a rockin’, stilt walking, jive talking 1950s duo. Another pair to bring the entertainment with smooth sounds and sultry tunes is the Ice Tea Duo. There will acts for all ages, styles, and interests throughout the month-long festival; performer details and times can be found on the Floriade website.

Perched on the slope above the lagoon, our eco cabin’s floor-to-ceiling glass sliding doors open onto a spacious deck that affords stunning views across the water. After a short walk to explore our surrounds, we enjoyed drinks and nibbles on the deck as the sun set over the lagoon, where several black swans glided by as birdsong filled the air.

Back aboard our canoe, we circumnavigated the islet before heading back to base. After lunch, we ventured off on a bushwalk through the adjoining Mimosa Rocks National Park; the well-signposted path is accessed directly from the Camp. Over a couple of hours, our (moderate level) walk took us through timbered woodlands to headlands and stunning coastal scenery. As well as abundant birdlife, we spotted a curious swamp wallaby at beautiful Bithry Inlet (the mouth of Wapengo Lake, famed for its pristine waters and oysters), and an elusive echidna seeking refuge in the hollow of a giant gum near Myer House.

About Tanja Lagoon Camp

After breakfast on Saturday, we boarded one of the Camp’s double canoes and paddled the length of Tanja Lagoon to the sandbar separating it from the sea. Loosely based on his parents’ experience during World War II, Manning says he wanted to focus on how women were affected during this time; how they waited for their husband’s return from the war, often men they barely knew who then came back as very different people.

Painting the Light follows Nell and Alec, who both have dreams of escaping the paths their families made for them. Soon, Hitler’s mission sends them in directions they never wanted; Nell returns home and Alec enlists to join the war effort. The pair meet and have a wartime romance; their experience together and apart makes them want to make the world a better place, even if that means losing their families.

Manning was partly motivated by wanting to understand more about his mother, her life and what she went through. He never had the chance to speak to her about it as she died when he was young, while his father only briefly discussed those times but never mentioned the horrors they endured.Thelived experiences of the people of the time ultimately changed how they would interact with their future families. The horrors witnessed, the feeling of living with a stranger, and the lack of support for returning soldiers all played a part in it, however, it was

“It’s not a story about war per se, it’s about how the war affected that generation,” Manning says.

While the book is based on historical events, most of the characters are fictional though influenced by people he knew.

“Baby boomers were determined to treat their children differently. I know that’s true of my generation, I’m on the tail end of the baby boomers and I wanted to be way more present than my parents ever have been for me.”

The stories are what Dr Owen refers to as mirror books, in which Indigenous children can see themselves at the centre of the story. organisation, Dr Owen has spearheaded the Our Yarning Collection, and moves around the country encouraging Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to create books that speak to theirThechildren.OurYarning Collection began in March 2021 with a goal of 500 stories in the first five years. So far, they have successfully helped 160 stories to be written, with between 60-110 already available to read on the app and others in the pipeline. The authors are encouraged to share a story that has been passed down, either from their imagination or something that happened to them as a child. Their experiences will be what speaks to children like them.

The team from Our Yarning Collection travel across Australia holding workshops to help First Nations People tell their stories. The books written at the workshops are added to their digital library, which is available via a free app, in the hopes of sparking a love of reading for all First Nations children. The initiative comes to the University of Canberra on 20-21 September, where they will be hosting two writing workshops and speaking to an Aussie adventurer.HuwKingston has been raising funds for the digital library during his Alpine Odessey, which sees him ski across the full length of Australia’s snow country. He anticipates it will take 50 days and hopefully help reach his $50,000 target. Fresh from the slopes, the Save the Children ambassador joins Dr Julie Owen to discuss his adventures and the importance of Our Yarning.

Two girls find themselves in all manner of trouble in this exciting debut from fresh author Emma Styles.

Constant troublemaker Charlie and mysterious Nao are very different people who are brought together in the worst of ways. After becoming unwilling accomplices in a murder, the two are forced to go on the run, taking the victim’s ute on a dangerous cross-country drive across the Western Australian outback. However, with both girls harbouring secrets, can they learn to work together to survive and evade capture? Moreover, what happens when they find a massive bag of stolen gold hidden in the back of their getaway ride?

No Country for Girls is an impressive and memorable debut from Emma Styles that comes highly recommended. Styles really makes her mark as an upcoming author here and it will be interesting to see what she writes next.

This book contains an excellent and captivating thriller narrative that perfectly balances character development with exciting moments. Watching the protagonists attempting to work together to survive while also continuing to mistrust each other results in a dramatic but fun story that proves quite addictive. Their intense interactions as they attempt to evade the danger coming for them are brilliant, and I had an amazing time getting to know them.

“With the supply chain queues these days, it’s also time to start taking action on your outdoor decorating projects if you plan to have outdoor rooms ready for summer entertaining,” says Nadine.

“Pretty spring napkins are an easy way to add a spring touch to your dining room. Take some inspiration from the floral displays in the beauty area of the Canberra Centre – try draping flowers through your chandelier, over your mantel or on a console.

“I don’t find early spring in Canberra is the time to start packing away blankets and throws – I wait a little longer for that,” she says.“After winter hibernation, your rugs and upholstery have had a good workout and would probably benefit from cleaning.”

Canberra-based interior designer and decorator Nadine Neilson’s passion is transforming Canberrans’ homes into their dream sanctuary. Owner of the fabulous interior design company Journey Home, Nadine spends her days taking her clients on a journey to their perfect home. While we’re in the first few weeks of September, Nadine shares her top professional tips on styling and decluttering during the spring cleaning season.

“Dried flowers are super trendy right now but do give a more autumn vibe, so you could add a faux flower to them to add a spring nod or change out dried arrangements for flowers, real or faux. Don’t hate the faux – it’s a lot more real than it used to be.

“Decluttering your indoors is a great activity whilst it is still cool, and you will be surprised how ticking off that task will make you feel. If letting go is hard to do, I have created a guide called Headspace Tips for decluttering with conviction.”

“My first thought on a request for spring tips is to decorate well, decorate once, decorate for the whole year. Save yourself time, money, and storage by keeping the need for seasonal decorating to a minimum,” says Nadine.

Spring styling

“For a draping effect, you will need to be generous when working out your quantities. I shocked the shopkeeper when I was buying hot pink faux flowers for our spring porch display, offered to buy the lot, and asked if they have any more out the back! The more the merrier if you want this look.

“My last little tip for spring is when you’ve enjoyed your last cosy fire, fill the fireplace gap with a large basket.”

Keep your winter warmers

“Onto pretty things now!” smiles Nadine.

“About this time of year, I am feeling guilty about not having sanded and oiled my lovely teak outdoor furniture during winter, so I will start to kick myself into gear on this task. Here’s some food for thought: outsourcing is always a great idea to make things actually happen.”

“I often observe changing out doona covers to fill a gap where decorating just hasn’t happened. My main bedroom is a perfect example of an undecorated room that gets attention through new doona covers, yet our front guest bedroom is beautifully decorated, and I never feel a need to change it around.”

If there’s one room in the house that is perpetually chaotic, it’s most likely the laundry room. It’s generally a tiny space where you spend way too much time. While your laundry may be full of frenzy, a clever design could transform the space to be stylish and functional.

“When choosing laundry fixtures and fittings, think about what you want from your fixtures and your wider laundry design.”

Fittings and tapware

Head of design and innovation at Methven, Andy Grigor, says the laundry is one of the most essential areas in your home.

Storage is key

Often one of the smallest rooms of the home, storage solutions are integral to a functional laundry. A top tip is to incorporate as much cabinetry as possible to create extra storage, and add a utility cart to provide moveability. Another option is to add a range of baskets and

try the ever-popular white classic tile, or if you want something unique, you can experiment with block-coloured tiles or patterned ones.

If you have the urge to reconfigure your laundry room during your renovation, just take a moment to re-evaluate. Andy says this can often be unnecessary and not cost-effective. To help make the space feel larger, add some personal touches such as a mirror and plant, which will also enhance the room to make it feel lighter.
