From the editor

Morning sunlight streaming through yellow trees, bathing the streetscape in a golden glow.

Crisp russet leaves crunching underfoot on a sunny afternoon walk.

Fallen leaves dancing on a breeze.

These are a few of my favourite things about autumn, my favourite season in Canberra.

“There is something so special in the early leaves drifting from the trees – as if we are all to be allowed a chance to peel, to refresh, to start again.” –

While spring is the season of renewal, autumn and winter are the seasons of winding down, which make regeneration possible.

In nature, autumn is a time of letting go of that which has served its purpose, just as a deciduous tree drops its leaves. For me, the challenge is not only in letting go, but also knowing what to let go of … old belongings are easier; unhelpful habits, relationships, and ways of being in the world are much harder to assess and let fall.

Reasons to be grateful this past week include attending the launch of the enthralling Breathing Space sound installation at the National Museum of Australia, two chivalrous gentlemen helping me change a flat tyre on a chilly night before I cancelled roadside assist, brunch with girlfriends, and a fun dinner with school mums from the 1990s. Take care.

Canberra mum awarded for I Got You suicide prevention campaign

A Canberra mum was recently announced as one of two ACT winners in Suicide Prevention Australia’s LiFE Awards. Leesa Mountford was nominated by OzHelp for founding ‘I Got You,’ after her son died by suicide in April 2021.

Joshua Clarke was just 25 years old. He had worked in construction and had been offered an apprenticeship that same week.

“It shattered me,” said Leesa, tearing up. “It was, and it will be, the worst phone call I’ll ever receive.

“It destroyed who I was really, as a mum to a son. My only son.

“While I was cleaning out Josh’s belongings, doing the crappy life admin that needs to be done for somebody, I came across his diary. In it he had written ‘I got you’.

“His sisters had spoken about how Josh would say ‘I got you’ instead of saying ‘I love you’. It can mean so much, those three simple words.”

Leesa formed the idea to print Josh’s handwritten note on clothing, in hopes that

somebody experiencing their darkest day would see the message and remember that there is always someone to talk to.

By selling the apparel, I Got You raises money for OzHelp, a Fyshwick-based not-for-profit that was established in 2001 after David O’Bryan, a young building apprentice, took his own life.

OzHelp now focuses on providing mental health programs for workers in “high-risk, hardto-reach” industries.

When Josh died, Leesa, his younger sister Taylor, and several of his work mates accessed counselling through OzHelp.

Last April, Leesa held a legacy fundraiser in honour of her son. “It was a simple schnitzel dinner. Josh was pretty down to earth. Nothing fancy about him,” she smiled. “We had no expectations.”

Two hundred and twenty-eight people attended that night.

“We auctioned off some of Josh’s tradie mates for jobs and all the money was donated to Oz Help.”

By the time the event ended, they had raised just over $19,000. “Our minds were blown.”

“We’ve decided that we’re going again,” said Leesa. The fundraiser will take place on Saturday 15 April at Ainslie Football Club. Three hundred tickets are available for the event, which will include Paralympian Kathryn Ross as a guest speaker, bidding ballots, live auctions, and a sizable raffle.

“There is plenty of fun to be had, all in the name of Josh and looking out for one another.”

This year, Leesa and Taylor will also be creating a video that will go into OzHelp’s Life Skills toolbox program, along with a suicide awareness course. The program is delivered to apprentices.

“We’re interviewing Josh’s mates about how his suicide impacted them, and some tips on how they look after their mental health.

“We’re raising awareness so that other families don’t have to go through what we are going through,” said Leesa.

Albanese and Bandt put Australia’s security at risk

Firstly, congratulations to the new Member for Aston, Mary Doyle, for Labor’s historic win in last Saturday’s by-election, and a brickbat to Mark Latham for his insensitive and overthe-top reaction to a fellow NSW independent MP. I always believe you should play the ball, not the man in politics. Latham is certainly a highly capable tough conviction politician, but he exudes a certain nervous tension which has, it seems, manifested itself in the past by him being inappropriately overly aggressive.

The recent sweeping energy deal struck between Anthony Albanese, Adam Bandt and crossbenchers including David Pocock will, in the words of Japanese gas giant Impex CEO Takayuki Ueda, “choke investment, strangle expansion of LNG projects and allow Russia, China and Iran to fill the void”. He was joined at a special meeting with the federal government at Parliament House by the Japanese ambassador, who also delivered a stinging rebuke of the government’s energy and gas policy.

These two gentlemen warned against rushing the net zero emissions transition.

Australia supplies 70 per cent of the coal, 60 per cent of the iron ore and 40 per cent of the gas Japan needs. We keep the lights on in Tokyo.

The Greens leader Adam Bandt gloated after the deal with Labor that most of the 155 new gas and coal projects in the pipeline would now not go ahead. Such an attitude is insanity writ large.

Apart from the loss of jobs and the flowon effect to thousands of small businesses in Australia, the stopping of such projects will have diddly squat effect on climate change. Indeed, it will cause a net rise in emissions as countries that bought Australian gas and coal will now buy from other countries whose coal especially emits twice as many emissions as ours. So Albanese, Bandt, Pocock and co. will have actually contributed to an increase in emissions worldwide.

By Australia going down this path, we are

also helping the authoritarian states, especially Russia. Surely no one in the federal parliament wants to help Russia in its barbaric war against the people of Ukraine. These policies are already raising questions amongst our allies in the Quad, Japan and India, as to whether we can continue to be regarded as a reliable economic partner.

Australian clean coal is helping bring 300 million Indians out of poverty. I find it offensive to think the misguided policies by no doubt well-meaning people like Pocock are frustrating these efforts and contributing to more global warming.

This disastrous agreement between Labor and the cross bench has the very real potential to destroy our well-earned reputation as a safe, reliable trading partner and place to invest in.

A strong Japan and an India growing in strength and wealth are good for the free world. As a fellow Quad member, we should help them both and at the same time help ourselves.

Our Serviced Apartments make life a little easier.

A PROVEN PATHWAY VALUABLE EMPLOYMENT PROGRAM to HOSPITALITY SPARK

The SPARK JobTrainer ClubsACT Hospitality program offers a proven pathway into Canberra’s vibrant hospitality industry.

The program is designed specifically to provide individuals with the skills, knowledge and resources needed to enter the workforce. This awardwinning program, delivered in partnership with the Canberra Institute of Technology (CIT) and ClubsACT has a focus on skills development, hands-on training, and work experience placements.

Mel Lyons, SPARK Training and Employment manager says “This model was specifically developed to provide individuals with a pathway into employment. The link between training and industry is key to its success.”

Fully funded through JobTrainer, the program o ers participants all the benefits and opportunities at no cost. Participants are provided with the Personal Protective Equipment needed to fully engage in CIT’s simulated bar and live training café, and an industry work placement.

“The program is suitable for a diverse range of individuals, whether just beginning in a career path or looking to change directions,” says Ms Lyons.

Commencing on Tuesday 23 May, the next five-week program combines

theory, practical hands-on learning, and a five-day industry work placement.

Come along to the enrolment session on Tuesday 2 May from 10.30am to 12.30pm at CIT Reid Campus to learn more about the award-winning SPARK JobTrainer ClubsACT Hospitality Program.

SPARK graduate testimonials

Beatrix, a Dickson College graduate, was taking a gap year when her mum introduced the idea of SPARK.

“I didn’t like school too much,” Beatrix says. “I wasn’t doing a whole lot, just working casually and trying to figure out where I wanted to go.”

Dzaky had been working as a visual merchandiser, a job that paid well, but was irregular and involved a lot of travel.

“I was referred to the SPARK program by my employment provider as I was looking for a new job with a more stable and routine schedule,” Dzaky says. “The program helped me in attaining the qualifications and experience needed for me to get a foothold in the hospitality sector.”

A key part of the SPARK program is job readiness. A dedicated SPARK Relationship Manager journeys alongside the participants to o er

wraparound support before, during and after completion of the program.

After the four-week program, successful participants are o ered a five-day work experience placement with a partnering ClubsACT member.

Ainslie Group were very excited to be part of the SPARK program as they felt it aligned with the club industry’s own values and vision.

“We were inspired by Ginninderry’s passion for community engagement, and their commitment to educate and support individuals who may face challenges to attaining employment,” says Molly Star-Hossack, Ainslie Group human resource manager.

Dzaky and Beatrix both completed their five-day work placement at the Ainslie Football and Social Club. During this time, they gained valuable experience across various roles, before choosing an area of focus for their remaining time.

“The five-day work experience let me get familiar with café, bar, and restaurant operation. It also led me straight into my current employment, as I was o ered a position as soon as the work experience period was over,” says Dzaky.

Matt Nunn, Ainslie Football Club operations manager says, “Dzaky was brilliant in the café, even stepping

behind the co ee machine during busy periods. Meanwhile in the restaurant, Beatrix was running meals with e ciency, spent time as cashier, and her customer interaction was second to none.

“I was so impressed by the e ort and achievement of Dzaky and Beatrix that I o ered them both employment and was extremely pleased they accepted,” Matt says.

When asked about the benefits of the SPARK program, Molly explains that “it allows prospective employers to tap into a diverse pool of talent, potentially bringing new perspectives, skills, and experiences to your organisations.”

Since completing the program, both Dzaky and Beatrix continue to enjoy working and developing skills as employees of the club.

“Beatrix has become a reliable member of our wait sta , and Dzaky has proven to be a valuable sta member across a number of areas,” says Matt.

When asked if she would recommend SPARK to others Beatrix replies, “Absolutely!”

“As someone who has struggled with learning most of my life, it was great to have something short and sweet. It made learning a whole lot easier for me,” she smiles.

Shh, it’s a secret: Ninjas helping kids keep fit

Stealthy, agile, coordinated, and with cool costumes, ninjas make the perfect fitness role models –and one Canberra crew is sharing their skills at secret training camps. Designed for kids aged three to seven, the Secret Ninja School is a movement program delivered in two formats: face-to-face lessons and a school program.

Aiming to build a love of movement in new generations, founder of the program, Kieran ‘Ninja Kicks’ Deck wants to see more kids flexing their muscles, both cognitive and physical.

“What we’re trying to do is provide kids with this epic experience of movement early on and, without them realising it, get them to do 100 planks in two years

to build their core strength. So that when they get to school and a friend kicks them a soccer ball, they can kick that ball back,” says Mr Deck.

Appalled by the fact that threequarters of Australian children get less than their recommended exercise intake each week, Mr Deck wanted to help do something about it.

With a love of taekwondo and third degree international black belt, Mr Deck decided to leave his successful media career in 2017 and set up his own school. He felt he could better help the community there. During Covid, the classes moved online, and he noticed kids were struggling.

While watching a Disney production with his partner, Mr

Deck had the idea of putting the movements to a story in hopes of keeping children more engaged.

“Instead of going ‘let’s kick’, I wrote a story and I performed those moves and got them to follow along,” he says.

Wanting to target that younger age bracket, Mr Deck feels a deep connection with the children, and says it is a vital time in their development. He wants to help ensure

that they grow up not regarding exercise as a chore to be ticked off a list.

“If you have a really positive relationship with movement as a kid, when you become an adult, it just is natural. You look for those opportunities,” he says.

Best Cover Shot of the Year

Is it too early to nominate Canberra Weekly’s Best Cover Shot of the year? My money is on Kerrie Brewer’s work for the March 30 edition, showing a birthday cake being presented to a terrifying T-Rex. It’s eye-catching, funny, dramatic, and viewers instantly grasp the subject matter: The National Dinosaur Museum is having a birthday! And the additional image on page 4 is just as entertaining, looking almost like a publicity stunt for Jurassic Park that’s about to go horribly wrong. Great work!

City planning requires evidence

Jo Clay (CW online, 30 March) identifies the challenges facing Canberra including homelessness, housing unaffordability and a mismatch between jobs and residential location. Her prescription of a city less reliant on cars with densification through townhouses and apartments close to services and supporting people to age in place, is not new. Such compact city policies have been a feature of Canberra’s planning for over 30

infill, based on the views of 38 randomly selected Canberrans, are highly dubious. The infill policy is resulting in an undersupply of detached housing and a consequent increase of car-dependent development in surrounding NSW. A detailed analysis of housing preferences is necessary.

The scope for increased detached housing development with significant employment, services

widely accepted and functional proposal for it to succeed. It does not bode well that the best the government can come up with is a “Voice statement” that is divisive and has more holes in it than a sieve! Albo just does not get it, as he is relying on voters’ goodwill without presentation of the facts. It is wasted as the goodwill has always been there, however voters do not like being

2 Tbsp milk

1/2 cup coconut flour

1 tsp baking powder

For the buttercream frosting

In another bowl, sift the coconut flour and baking powder twice. Add these dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and stir to combine.

Divide the batter between each of the patty pans and bake on the centre rack of the oven for approx. 20 minutes until the tops are golden and spring back when lightly touched. Allow the cupcakes to cool for 5 minutes in the pan before transferring them to a rack to cool completely.

To make the frosting, beat the butter with an electric mixer until pale and fluffy. Add the vanilla, sugar and 2 tablespoons of the milk and beat until smooth. Add a little more sugar or a little more milk a drop at a time to adjust the consistency. Lightly tint buttercream with 1-2 drops pink food colouring.

Pipe buttercream swirls on each cupcake and then decorate with marshmallows bunny ears. To make the ears, combine sugar and food dye in a small bowl and mix until the sugar is tinted pink. Cut the marshmallows in half and dip the cut side into the sugar. Arrange the marshmallows on top like bunny rabbit ears.

Dining review: History, culture, and mighty good food at Lakeside Gurkhas

There’s a rumbling on the Kingston Foreshore. Lakeside Gurkhas has joined the dockside dining precinct, offering authentic Nepalese cuisine and lessons in the land it hails from.

A welcome breath of fresh air for 33 Eastlake Parade, Lakeside Gurkhas’ menu is a labour of love, and love of country.

Not only will you find delicacies from all three regions of Nepal - from the Himalayas, to the central hilly regions, to the planes of Terai - you will also find a hint of British influence, particularly in their popular weekend breakfasts.

This isn’t just to cater to the English palate, but to help bring the history of the mighty Gurkhas to Canberra.

Gorkhas is the name of the cultural

epicentre of Nepal, “The place where everything started,” explains restaurant managers, Nischal and Nina.

250 years ago, several countries, all bearing different climates and cuisines, were brought together to form the Kingdom of Nepal. At Lakeside Gurkhas, the traditional seating area where large groups can share in those cuisines today, bears the same name.

Gurkhas, on the other hand, are the Nepalese warriors who inspired General Sam ‘The Brave’ Manekshaw’s quote: “If a man says he is not afraid of dying, he is either lying or is a Gurkha.”

Despite Gurkhas fighting alongside the Anzacs in the Gallipoli campaign, few Australians know of their existence, says Nischal.

“When the East India Company sought to enter Nepal, the Nepalese soldiers fought their canons and guns with traditional knives, called Khukuri

“The British were so impressed by the warrior spirit of the Gurkhas that they wanted them in their military … Today, there’s a Gurkha regiment in both the Indian and British armies.”

26 Victoria Crosses have been awarded to Gurkha soldiers and British officers in Gurkha regiments to date.

The second half of the Lakeside Gurkhas name refers not only to the picturesque Foreshore, but to one of the most famous tourist destinations in Nepal. “There’s a place called

Lakeside in Pokhara and it’s heaven on earth,” says Nischal.

The Twakka Sandheko Makai - crispy battered corn mixed with Nepalese spices - is a must-try for vegetarian and gluten-free diners. However, it’s the momos that will have me coming back. Nepalese momos are similar to dumplings in shape but are packed with more flavour.

Available in vegetarian paneer, chicken, and buffalo, the Dirty Chilli Momos in particular are bursting with flavour and will warm you up from the inside out.

Canberra author aspires to spark climate hope for young readers

Concerned with the way the media reports on climate change, Canberra author Cate Whittle thought all the negativity may leave young people feeling stuck and without a future. She wrote her newest youth novel, Starberries and Kee, to inspire hope that while there may be change happening, we can respond to it in a positive way.

“We can do this, we can turn it around, or we can at least adapt and live in a more sustainable, comfortable and less negative way,” Whittle says.

In the not-too-distant future, communities have grown tired of waiting for action from governments and big companies, instead they have decided to be the change. Small community sects have come together to find ways of living that support each other and the Earth.

“They live sustainably, they’re using solar and wind power, and they’re using their environment in a more friendly way rather than exploiting it,” she says.

Two children collide, one from what is left of the cities and one from up in the mountains. They have different approaches to life; one comes from a community, the other from isolation, but both find themselves being sent away after ageing grandparents could no longer care for them. Neither of them happy with their circumstances, they set out on an adventure together.

Exploring the genre of solarpunk, the author says isn’t asking children to take up arms and storm government offices, rather to think of approaching things differently. Predominantly a fantasy writer, Whittle fell in love with Narnia years ago.

“I’m still looking for the wardrobe door, I think there’s an element of escapism, I always want to be somewhere where things might be better. I think perhaps that’s driven the story, too,” Whittle says.

In the world she has created, each child has their own role and responsibility based on their

Land Rovers to take over Cooma for anniversary celebration

Built as the United Kingdom’s answer to the Jeep after seeing how efficient those vehicles were during World War II, Land Rover came onto the scene in 1948. To mark their 75-year anniversary, over 900 of the powerful vehicles are making their way to Cooma NSW for a weekend of on- and off-road celebrations over the Easter long weekend, 6-10 April.

“The first Land Rovers were brought out here in 1948 for the Snowy Hydro Scheme … They were the only vehicles that could get around in those early days to do the job. If they didn’t have them, they would have done it on foot or horse,” says Rogan Corbett, president of the Historic Automobile Club Cooma.

According to Mr Corbett, it is the social aspect of the club that attracts many members. This includes

events like the upcoming Land Rover anniversary which the club is spearheading, though clubs from around the country are involved. Many of the models used by Australians over the years will be present over the weekend, from the first Series 1 model to the brand-new Range Rovers. Mr Corbett says there will be models that have been restored, some recovered, and others kept as they were.

“There’s some very unusual Land Rover fire trucks – a Range Rover fire truck that they used to use during the Cold War, I believe,” he says.

The world’s most recognisable Land Rover is making an appearance, The Oxford, which was one of the vehicles that participated in the Oxford and Cambridge Far Eastern Expedition of 1955, from London to Singapore.

Special guests are making their way from Land Rover headquarters in the UK. These include photo- journalist Nick Dimbleby, Mike Bishop from Jaguar Land Rover Classic UK, and 1989 Camel Trophy Amazon Jungle Event for Team UK winner, Bob Ives.

The Cooma showground will be Land Rover central for the weekend, hosting swap meets, interviews and signings, as well as a ‘Show and Shine’ event that will raise funds for designated local charities.

Living (PG)

In 1953, young bureaucrat Mr Wakeling (Alex Sharp) joins his new colleagues at a train station on their way to the London County Council office. On the way, the group is joined by their boss, the quiet and uninspired senior bureaucrat Rodney Williams (Bill Nighy). After another day of avoiding actual work, Mr Williams receives a terminal diagnosis.

Bill Nighy has made a career out of playing the quintessential quiet British gentleman. This outing is a quiet opus, simply but masterfully critically analysing the idea of the traditional gentleman; from the office to the home and ultimately, the point of it all. Mr Williams’ recently considered impending mortality has led to a (relatively) radical new perspective: how best to spend one’s remaining time? Is it on hedonism, through a youthful idealistic outlook,

or something else?

From a screenplay by Nobel Prize-winning novelist Kazuo Ishiguro, adapted from the Japanese film Ikiru (1952) directed by Akira Kurosawa (Seven Samurai) which in turn was inspired by Leo Tolstoy’s 1886 Russian novella, The Death of Ivan Ilyich, the story is timeless and cross-cultural. In the bureaucratic office environment, the timeline of an employee is shown at their shared workspace: from recruit to supervisor to manager. Given the status and privilege of such positions, is it ideal to simply toe the line or seek something of further value, especially on such limited time?

Verdict: A stylish, thought-provoking, and ultimately inspirational story of what to do with one’s time with the tools already within reach. 4.5 stars.

Book talk

Jeff Popple reviews three enjoyable books to keep you entertained over the Easter eggstra-long weekend. More of Jeff’s reviews can be found on his blog: murdermayhemandlongdogs.com

Eleven Liars by Robert Gold

Sphere, $32.99

Robert Gold’s Twelve Secrets was one of the best British debuts of 2022 and his follow up mystery, Eleven Liars, is just as good. Journalist Ben Harper is on his way home when he spots flames coming from a building in the local churchyard. When he investigates, Ben realises that someone is trapped inside. He helps them escape, but they flee before they can be identified. When a skeleton is discovered in the smouldering ruins, the police launch a murder investigation that has profound implications for Ben. Easy flowing and very enjoyable, this is a good criminal read for the long weekend.

Simply Lies by David Baldacci

Macmillan, $34.99

Also offering plenty of surprises and suspense is the latest thriller by David Baldacci, Simply Lies. Former New Jersey detective Mickey Gibson now works for a global investigation company that specialises in tracking down wealthy debt avoiders. A simple inventory task at the mansion of a former arms dealer goes wrong when a long-decomposed body is found in a secret room, and Mickey finds that she has been set up by an unscrupulous criminal. Baldacci can always be relied upon to produce an entertaining read, and Simply Lies is a fun way to pass a few hours this Easter. Recommended.

Empress of the Nile by Lynne Olson

Scribe, $36.99

More serious fare is provided by Lynne Olson’s account of French archaeologist Christiane Desroches-Noblecourt and her efforts to save Egypt’s ancient temples from the floodwaters of the Aswan Dam. The dam threatened a dozen temples and it was left to a group of archaeologists to rescue them stone by stone, and move them to higher ground. It was a mammoth effort that was only made possible by Christiane’s efforts. Empress of the Nile is the very readable story of Christiane’s overlooked role and her incredible life, which also saw her imprisoned by the Nazis and bravely standing up to world leaders, including de Gaulle. Fascinating!

Silk pillowcases – helpful or hype?

Silk pillowcases have exploded in the beauty community in recent years. Their purported benefits include improving hair growth, reducing acne, bettering sleep, and even preventing the effects of time on our delicate skin.

You would think that such a miraculous beauty product would have become more popular sooner. Just a few years ago, silk pillowcases were considered a hair stylist’s best kept secret. Now you can find them just about anywhere that stocks bedding.

Truthfully, this “beauty hack” is nothing new. Those in the natural hair community have been using silk pillowcases and headwraps long before they became a fixture of everyone’s Instagram feed.

This is because curly or natural hair doesn’t retain as much moisture as straight hair and is more prone to breakage. Silk or satin isn’t as absorbent as cotton, so your pillow won’t steal as much moisture from your hair while you sleep.

It’s all these new purported benefits that have caused other hair groups to storm the bedding aisle.

I noticed several fast-fashion and fast-furniture stores marketing polyester pillowcases as silk online.

If you have ever ordered a dress from those websites, you know that polyester can hang on to very strange odours and get quite hot – the opposite of what silk does. Do your research before buying.

Before trialling Coverluxesilk’s 100% Silk Zippered Pillowcase (which came on the cheaper side of pure silk, at $75 a pop) I was given a list of the purported benefits and decided to rate each one.

Anti-ageing: Prevents wrinkles and fine lines, and maintains strong skin elasticity. This was difficult for me to rate over two weeks; however, experts also say there isn’t a yes-or-no answer. Yes, some theorise that the smoother surface of silk causes less pulling on the skin as we sleep, but there is no scientific evidence that this is a major factor in age-related wrinkles.

Antibacterial: Prevents acne breakouts, skin infections and blemishes. I did notice an immediate difference in my skin, particularly in the minor acne on my cheeks. However, this was likely due to having a new, clean pillowcase. When it comes to preventing bacteria-related acne on your face, washing your pillowcases regularly is far more important than investing in silk or satin.

Improves hair growth: Prevents split ends, hair

loss, and hair frizz by over 40 per cent. Sadly, not for me. My 1C “frizzy straight” hair is still very much frizzy. A hairdresser friend once told me that the only way to prevent split ends is to trim them regularly. She is yet to be proven wrong. However, my sister, who has curly 3A hair and sleeps on a satin pillowcase, described a 40 per cent difference in frizz that lined up surprisingly well with the purported benefit.

Temperature regulating: Improves comfort of sleep. For both my sister and me, this was the clincher. Silk is comfortable. Sleeping on a silk pillowcase means perpetually enjoying the cool side of the pillow. We can go back and forth on whether they lead to better sleep or better hair days, but when push comes to shove, silk pillowcases are a luxury. The true benefit is that it feels … well, luxurious.

Bathroom reno tips

I f your home improvement vision involves a bathroom renovation, you’re not alone. Many homeowners are getting stuck into freshening up their homes with a focus on the bathroom or ensuite.

Nick Crossland, from Highgrove Bathrooms, offers expert tips based on first-hand reno experience. Plus, he’s helped countless home renovators and tradies choose the right components like baths, sinks, toilets, and accessories such as mirrors, vanities, and fittings.

Where to start

Planning is crucial.

If you’re following the current layout and replacing your vanity, toilet, bath, and shower, you just have to decide about the tiling: do you top-dress existing tiles, which is easier and quicker, or completely redo the tiling?

If you’re re-doing the layout of your ensuite or bathroom, it’s best to follow the plumbing as this usually determines the placement.

If you’re completely changing the layout, consult your plumber first to determine where you can best place your new shower, bath, toilet and vanity in the space available. Mistakes to avoid

A few of the most common bathrooms renovation mistakes you want to avoid are:

• Lack of design planning

• Underestimating the extent of design choices available

• Not ensuring water ‘in’ and ‘out’ are free from leaks or faults

• Not fully considering the long-term needs of the household

• Attempting the reno without expert advice

• Unrealistic budget

• Smashing into your existing bathroom without turning off the water mains first!

Keep a big picture view

For a main bathroom update, consider the changing needs of your family. If you’re planning to sell in a few years or sooner, look at features that add extra buyer appeal, such as a double shower, or a spa instead of a bathtub. Because an ensuite is the more personal space for the couple of the house, strike the perfect balance between spa-like sanctuary and functionality. Stick to stylish, classy, beautiful and timeless.

Think practical Designs for basins, baths and vanities are not just about appearance, but usability and practicality, such as ease of cleaning. For example, avoid creating tight corners behind above-bench basins, or consider how di cult claw-foot tubs are to clean underneath versus a floor-fitted bath.

Storage is a key consideration, especially if the space is not very big. Sacrificing a second basin for more bench space, drawers or a wall cupboard might worthwhile. Good ventilation helps to avoid mould and condensation; also, most lotions and creams must be kept at cool temperatures.

Allow su cient space between the vanity top and any power point to fit diverse plugs and power cords. Bringing it all together

www.journey-home.com.au

Once you have considered all these suggestions, di erent layout and

design options, and obtained the right advice from experts, it’s time to bring it all together.

Things must be done in order and often require drying times in between. Renovations tend to go longer than planned, so don’t do all bathrooms at the same time and end up without a working shower or sink in the house. Order the accessories, ceramics, and fittings online or in-store.

Book your tradie or handyperson and work in with their schedule, unless you’re DIYing.

Even for DIY, it’s worth talking to a professional who is well-versed in bathroom installations and trained to assist in your planning.

OF
WEEK
to Long Beach PROPERTY
THE

Long Beach NSW 37 Long Beach Road

Blending lifestyle, location and convenience, this home offers a permanent base for the whole family in Canberrans’ favourite getaway location. Sitting just 650 metres away from Long Beach at Batemans Bay, it offers easy access to long stretches of white sand, fresh ocean air, and stunning turquoise waters. This home is also only a short drive from town, so convenience is never sacrificed.

For agent Steven Mason, the best part about this property is the large kitchen and lounge room area on the second floor, which faces the sunlight-drenched front veranda. The alfresco dining area offers not

only an outdoor kitchen, but a personal spa to relax and unwind in, surrounded by beautiful rainforest-like vistas. Paradise is only a few steps away from the master bedroom.

Downstairs you will find two more bedrooms, a bar, and study nook, along with tranquil gardens that spill into the natural bush oasis, which includes an outdoor shower. Built with family living in mind, the separate studio can sleep the teenager, guests, or extended family.

“I cannot think of another reason why you shouldn’t start packing your bags to move in today,” says Steven.
