From the editor

As well as being National Law Week (hence CW’s Law feature on page 20), it’s also Road Safety Week, which this year promotes the theme – “pledge to drive so others survive”.

The pledge reads:

• I pledge to drive as if my loved ones are on the road ahead.

• I will remove all distractions and never use my mobile phone while driving.

• I will not put other people at risk by speeding, driving while tired or under the influence of alcohol/drugs.

• I will protect all vulnerable road users, by slowing down and giving them the space they need to be safe.

Last year, 18 people died on ACT roads, three in Road Safety Week itself, and many more were injured. It was the worst year on record since 2010. Will you take the pledge? I have. Let’s cut the carnage.

Reasons to be grateful this past week include Mother’s Day high tea with the family, an invigorating Mother’s Day morning walk with friends and dogs followed by co ee in the park, “laughter through tears” at Free-Rain’s exquisite production of Steel Magnolias at ACT Hub, great food, company and live music by the talented Lucy Sugerman at the Luxe & Beau showroom opening in Fyshwick, outstanding professional theatre in Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap at Canberra Theatre, and a cheeky pre-theatre ramen in the city. Take care, especially on our roads.

Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride revs up for men’s health

Shirts buttoned, ties straightened, helmets strapped, and the Distinguished Gentleman’s (DGR) Ride starts, hitting the streets in towns and cities across the world to raise funds for the Movember Foundation. On Sunday 21 May, classic and vintagestyled motorbikes with dapper lads and ladies atop will be seen cruising Canberra streets.

DGR was born in Sydney in 2012 when founder Mark Hawwa was inspired by a photo of Jon Hamm dressed as Don Draper, his character from Mad Men, sitting on a classic bike. DGR invited bike enthusiasts to don their best vintage and retro gear and hop on a vintage or retro-styled motorcycle to positively represent communities across the globe, with 64 cities participating.

By the next year, the rides had more than doubled, with 145 cities participating, and were now also working towards a cause, cancer research. The riders fundraised to support the Prostate Cancer Foundation Australia; the next year, New Zealand, Canada, USA and UK branches were also being supported. In 2016, Movember became the official charity partner with funds

continuing to go toward prostate cancer research as well as men’s mental health.

“The funds are shared globally; it was a bit tied up with funds staying in Australia originally. To make it fair to everyone else in the world, they found all these other projects to work with countries around the world,” says Canberra DGR co-host John Aust.

John has taken part in DGR for the past five years. Joining him as co-host is Simon Whittaker, who has been there since the first event. Growing from just 20 riders around Black Mountain Peninsula, this year they are hoping to have around 160 well-dressed riders along for the journey.

“We do a bit of a tour around Canberra, taking in some of the sights,” says Simon.

Although their riders are dapper, the bikes really steal the show. They can be old vintage motorbikes, modern retro classics, choppers and models that are different to normal sports bikes. While drawing attention to their bikes, organisers hope to draw attention to the causes DGR supports.

“The research can continue; the programs can

be run. The mental health issues, there are a lot more these days and that’s why it’s so important to raise the funds,” says Simon.

Get your 2023 flu vaccine now

Getting vaccinated helps protect you and your loved ones from influenza over the winter months.

Influenza can cause death, even in healthy adults and children.

The best time to get the flu vaccine is now. It takes about two weeks to develop immunity.

The flu vaccine is government-funded* for:

▶ children aged 6 months to under 5 years

▶ all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples aged 6 months and older

▶ anyone pregnant

▶ people 65 years of age and older

▶ people aged 6 months and older with some medical conditions.

Flu vaccines save lives and help protect from severe illness.

You can get flu and COVID vaccines at the same time. Help fight the spread of illness this winter, if you’re sick stay home and take a COVID test –even if it’s negative stay home until you’re feeling better. Wash your hands regularly and wear a face mask when you can’t distance from others.

For more information talk to your healthcare professional and visit health.act.gov.au/flu

Labor-Greens cross to bear – Calvary takeover

Nothing surprises me these days, so the latest bit of bad government from our LaborGreens ACT government was just the latest in a saga of arrogant, disdainful treatment of an ACT community that keeps re-electing them regardless of how bad some of the government’s actions are.

However, the sheer apparent stupidity of the move was breathtaking. My wife Shirley, who tragically died last October, fought valiantly against various ailments for many years. We had cause to go to both the Canberra Hospital (TCH) and Calvary numerous times, especially in the last 15 years.

No hospital provides a perfect service, but I have found Calvary usually provides a better, quicker service than TCH. It appears to be better run. It does not have the same level of bureaucracy. It combines a good mix of public/ private, and the Little Company of Mary has a good track record of running similar hospitals in other parts of Australia with more sensible governments. Catholic hospitals in Australia

treat three patients every minute.

The short timeframe to complete the transfer (i.e., by 3 July this year) is ludicrous. The fact that Calvary’s agreement with the ACT government still had 74 years to run is of concern. The excuse that this will consolidate health services and lead to better outcomes is just plain wrong. How can it? The ACT government hospital has now some of the worst performances of any major hospital in the country, despite the valiant efforts of its medical staff. All objective analysis points to a further decline in services to the public.

One has to ask why this is happening. Is it part of some anti-religious crusade by the Greens and the left-wing members of the ACT Labor party? Is it because they hate the Catholic church and other Christian religions? Is that the real reason? As I wrote this article, I wondered how many of the current Green and Labor members of the assembly believe in God or have any faith. Are there any Christians, Muslims, Jews, Hindus, Buddhists, or other faiths represented by our local Green and Labor MLAs. I hope religion is

not the reason.

The local Catholic community has taken up a petition that clearly sets out its reasonable concerns about this. They state the actions of the ACT government are an abuse of property rights and religious freedom. They are especially concerned that:

1. The legislation was drafted and tabled without any consultation with Calvary Hospital, management, staff, or patients.

2. The proposed timeframe demonstrates a complete unwillingness on the part of the ACT government to dialogue with its citizens.

3. The ACT government does not have the competence to run a second hospital, as it already struggles to provide adequate services at Canberra Hospital. (See the 2019 independent review.)

4. The government will target other faith, welfare, and community groups without consultation.

Whatever happened to the old adage: if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it?

National Volunteer Week: Altruism at its best

Doing something for nothing can make you feel like a million bucks. Which is probably why three in 10 people in Australia are volunteers (including me).

This week is National Volunteer Week (15-21 May) and it’s worth knowing that volunteering pays dividends that aren’t monetary. It gives you a sense of satisfaction and the technical term, “warm fuzzies”.

This year’s volunteer week theme is “The Change Makers”, so we scouted around for some interesting volunteer positions and found this fascinating job description: “cat socialiser”.

It hardly sounds like work but it is absolutely crucial, according to cat socilaliser EmmaLouise Ward.

For the past five years, Emma-Louise has been voluntarily patting cats at the RSPCA ACT shelter for two hours each week.

“It got me through Covid lockdown,” EmmaLouise says. “This is my weekly therapy; I don’t need counselling, I just sit and talk to the cat and that’s my happy place.”

On a serious note, cat socialising is vital to prepare the cats for their forever homes.

“If we don’t do the socialising, they won’t get adopted,” Emma-Louise explains. “We touch them all over their body, that’s one of the things we have to do. We see if we can touch their paws, their tail, to see what their limits are because whatever we do it’s preparing them for their forever home. We’ve got to read the cage cards; we’ve got to read their temperament. Sometimes we’re asked to focus on a cat that’s timid, been neglected or abused, they just need some love.”

Emma-Louise admits that the volunteer hours are a “pleasure, not work” and if she can do a second shift, she puts her hand up. “It’s also my time to give something back, being a good world citizen.”

In 2019, almost 5.9 million people participated in voluntary work through an organisation. According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, during a 12-month period, volunteers contributed

an estimated 596.2 million hours to the community.

National Volunteer Week recognises the vital support that the millions of volunteers in Australia provide to their communities and encourages people to consider volunteering: volunteeringact.org.au

Pets and vets walking for suicide awareness

Shocking statistics show that Australian veterinarians are up to four times more likely to take their own lives than the general population. In a bid to raise awareness around the mental strain our vets are under, Flynn’s Walk comes to Commonwealth Place in Canberra on Sunday 21 May.

Young and travelling with his dream profession, Dr Flynn Hargreaves seemed to have it all at just 27. While working internationally, Flynn made time for fun as well; to friends, it seemed he was living a full and rewarding life. It was a shock to all who knew him when he ended his own life in 2018.

Close friend Jack Levitt’s world was shaken by the news; the pair had known each other since they were 15. While Flynn would

mention the pressures of the job, no one knew the real toll it was taking.

“He would talk about it being a tough industry, tough hours, long days but he found it really rewarding,” Mr Levitt says.

He and some other of Flynn’s friends launched Flynn’s Walk in Melbourne that same year to get together and process the grief. It has grown since that first year into a platform for raising awareness and a way for people to connect with those who look after our pets and domesticated animals.

The free event invites locals to bring their walking buddy – both human and furry; they’ve even had a scaley friend partake in the stroll. In Canberra, the meeting place is Commonwealth Place, from where the group leisurely walks a 5km circuit around

Helping people who live with dementia to stay at home longer.

Staying at Home is a free carer wellbeing and respite program designed to empower and upskill carers to support a person living with dementia to remain at home for as long as possible. With a strong focus on wellbeing and self-care, carers will be equipped to navigate the complexities and challenges of supporting a person living with dementia. As part of the program, the person living with dementia is offered an introduction to respite and receives tailored, individual support to continue meaningful and enjoyable activities for longer.

Lake Burley Griffin. Free coffee and a barbecue are offered for attendees; people are welcome to do the whole walk, just a section or hang back in the park.

“If you’ve ever been in a situation where a vet has helped you with your pet, then it is nice to

come and say thank you for that, even just by turning up,” he says. Full story online.

SOLUTIONS

You’ll appreciate the chance to revitalise your profile and status, both at work and in your personal life. It’s a good week to reach out to groups and circles you admire, and to secure a commitment from someone, either at work or in your personal life.

vi R g O auG 24 – SEPt 23

It’s a good week to turn a corner with a fun project or activity and to kickstart a fresh pastime or venture. Just be wary of taking on too much and pressuring others or feeling under pressure from someone who can exaggerate the facts.

L i BRA SEPt 24 – Oct 23

Saturday’s new moon will kickstart a fresh cycle in the way you share duties, finances or responsibilities. It’s a good time to devise new schedules and commitments. The key to avoiding difficulties is to avoid intense interactions.

SCOR pi O Oct 24 – nOV 22

Saturday’s new moon signals the chance for a fresh understanding with a business or personal partner, one that could bring more stability in your life. Be sure to take the initiative with talks and negotiations, but you must avoid making a mountain out of a molehill.

SAgi TTAR iu S nOV 23 – DEc 21

This is an excellent week for creating more stability in your personal life and at work. If your health has been lacking, it’s also a good time to devise a fresh health routine, as your efforts are likely to succeed. Patience is your key to success now.

CA p R i CORN DEc 22 – Jan 20

Saturday’s new moon will help you to revitalise your personal and family life. Be prepared to alter your understanding of a key relationship or the part you play in it. You’ll find security as a result, but must avoid arguments especially on Sunday and Monday.

AquAR iu S Jan 21 – fEB 19

It’s time for a fresh chapter at home or with family. If you’ve been contemplating making changes with a property, this is a good week to instigate your plans. A financial matter may come out in your favour if you’re realistic. Avoid pushing for results however.

pi SCES fEB 20 – MaR 20

This is a good week to adopt a fresh approach to a friend, group or organisation, as your efforts to improve your relationship are likely to pay off. A financial or personal matter will progress with a patient and yet a diligent attitude.

AR i ES MaR 21 – aPR 20

Saturday’s new moon will revitalise your personal life and your understanding of your deeper values. For some, this will be due to a deeper sense of your own direction, and for others due to a commitment to a domestic decision.

CANBERRA LAWYERS

WHERE THERE’S A WILL, THERE’S A WAY WITH MEJ

When it comes to disputes over a will, it's best to get on the front foot by understanding your rights, says a partner at Maliganis Edwards Johnson, Craig Edwards.

Sometimes people don’t leave a will, or if they have, it may be invalid, or poorly prepared. Other times, even when a will is valid, someone may not have been adequately provided for.

“A lot of people don’t know what to do or where to start when a relative dies, and a solicitor can guide them through that,” he says.

“It can be emotional work, and if there are disputes, a solicitor is able to ‘step back’ to assess the individual’s rights.”

Craig can help people navigate wills and estate problems, when they feel that a will has not justly provided for them.

“Often there are oversights, particularly in an extended or blended family, or when a family member with illness or special needs has not been adequately provided for,” Craig says.

“It need not be a vindictive oversight, but the

financial distress remains.

“Challenging a will can involve complex family and financial histories. But a proper outcome can be obtained, with the help of professional advice.

“I like speaking with my clients and guiding them to a proper result. In essence, we untangle problems caused by a bad will.”

ESTATE PLANNING:

SO MUCH MORE THAN ‘JUST A WILL’

Regardless of your stage of life or family status, you should have a will and enduring power of attorney in place. But it’s something that so many people neglect or put off entirely.

However, as MV Law Partner Tanya Herbertson warns, this is an oversight that has significant consequences. “We’ve seen first-hand the distress, delay and cost caused to loved ones when estate planning has not been done or not done properly,” she says.

As the head of Canberra’s largest, most experienced wills and deceased estates legal team, Tanya says that good estate planning is so much more than just passing on your valuables.

“People don’t realise that estate planning also covers off issues such as instructions for your care if you become disabled, providing for the transfer of your business if you have one, or minimising future tax, court costs and legal fees,” she explains.

“And this should be an ongoing process, not a one-time event. Your family, financial situation and even laws will change over the course of your life, and so your plan should be reviewed and updated accordingly.”

For some people the idea of addressing all these issues can seem daunting. But this is where consulting the right experts is absolutely critical.

“It doesn’t matter if your circumstances are pretty straightforward or very complex – my team and I have the expertise and experience to make sure the process is as smooth and easy as possible, to ensure your peace of mind and to make sure your legal documents are enforceable when it counts.”

We’ve seen firsthand the distress, delay and cost caused to loved ones when estate planning has not been done or not done properly."

From street to museum, what do Aussies really look like

Hitting the sides of buildings and streetways across the country in 2016, artist Peter Drew challenged people to reflect on their perception of what an Australian looked like. Now the works have made their way inside one of the country’s leading institutions with Aussie: Posters on display at the National Museum of Australia until 27 August.

Created using images from the National Archives of Australia, Drew sorted through the images taken during the Commonwealth Immigration Restriction Act, better known as the White Australia Policy. The people in the images were either long settled in Australia or born here; when wanting to travel overseas they applied for an exemption from the dictation test on re-entry to Australia.

“People would be asked to complete this dictation test; it could be given to them in any language, and it could be given to them any number of times. Say they passed the test in English, it could be given to them again in

history because it shows how cowardly these people were,” says Drew.

The provocative images take photos of men, women, and children as they were saved on their applications and enlarges them to poster size; Drew then overlays with details of colour and the word ‘Aussie’. The artist first started spreading the posters during a wave of xenophobia, particularly anti-Islamic sentiments while the Reclaim Australia movement was making itself known through various protests and media coverage. Wanting to broaden the discussion of who is an ‘Aussie’, Drew chose street art, something that demands attention, as his medium.

“What these photographs show is how diverse Australia was at the time the Immigration Act was implemented … It’s kind of an ironic twist that because we had this racist policy, we now have this fantastic photographic record,” says Drew.

Personally gluing the posters around the country, Drew tries to choose places that wouldn’t

one up in a deliberately provocative place. The act itself has become an important part of the works.

“It becomes a bit of a spectacle of the physical feat of one person sticking them all up. If you see a poster up on the street, you know that I was there personally.”

From page to stage: Tempo’s Book of the Month

Book of the Month, Tempo Theatre’s first play of the year, is a “gentle English comedy” – just the ticket for this time of doom and gloom, director Jon Elphick believes.

Scandal erupts in a respectable English town when the M.P.’s daughter writes her first novel: Bare Bosom’d Night, a steamy romance featuring her family and neighbours. (Less roman à clef than roman à cleavage?)

Betty Halliday (Sarah Jackson) is 17 turning 18; her journalist friend (Ryder Gavin) is an aspiring novelist, but has never finished a book. So, she gives writing a go to see how hard it is. The result is “a torrid tale of love and lust” (albeit seen through the eyes of an innocent teenager in 1950s England). In it,

her father (Kim Wilson) is having an affair with his wife’s sister (Debra Byrne); her mother (Rina Onorato) is having an affair with the doctor (Chris McGrane); and the maid (Anna Hemmings) has had a baby to the colonel (Paul Cowan). The novel becomes a bestseller, hence the title – and the town must deal with the fallout from the book.

The play’s highlight is the second act, which shows the novel acted out onstage. Even after two months of rehearsals, the actors still find the piece amusing.

“The cast were still laughing at it last night,” Elphick said. “Having seen it a thousand times, if they’re still laughing, it must be alright.”

The 1954 play was by Basil Thomas, a prolific writer of plays, screenplays, and pantomimes in

AWAKEN YOUR INNER WISDOM GUIDED BY PHILOSOPHY

post-war Britain. Stage called it “ingenious” and “good light entertainment” – “one of the best laugh shows of the season”. After Thomas’s early death in 1957, aged only 44, his cousin, Gerald Thomas, director of the (in)famous Carry On films, adapted it for the cinema as Please Turn Over (1959).

But Tempo’s production is the first time Book of the Month has been performed in Australia since the 1980s.

One wet Saturday evening two years ago, Elphick watched the film adaptation on television, and liked it – but he faced several hurdles tracking down the original play.

It was long out of print; the English theatre script library that held it didn’t open for several months; and then a postal strike delayed sending it to Australia.

But the delays were worth it, Elphick believes.

“It could have been absolute rubbish, but it wasn’t. It was much better than the movie. We thought it was funny from the moment we first read it.”

And he hopes Canberra audiences will think so, too.

“With everything that’s happening in the world, people need a break. If you want an afternoon of thought-provoking

theatre, this isn’t for you. If you want an afternoon just to relax and enjoy yourself, this is the show to come and see. Spend a couple of hours, have a good laugh, and forget about your troubles.”

Tempo Theatre presents Book of the Month at the Belconnen Theatre, 26 May–3 June. Tickets are available from canberraticketing.com.au or phone 6275 2700.

The Wager by David Gann

Simon & Schuster, $34.99

T: 0432 785 654

E: reception@merryheartcbr.com.au

W: merryheartcbr.com.au

In January 1742, a patchwork boat made of cloth and wood washed ashore on the coast of Brazil. The thirty men onboard were the emaciated survivors of HMS Wager, which had been wrecked on a desolate island. The men were greeted as heroes, but six months later they were in court following claims from another three survivors that they were guilty of murder and mutiny. Claim and counter claim followed in the resultant court-martial, and renowned author David Gann brings this real-life event to dramatic life and vividly captures the details of the incident and the wider implications. Highly recommended.

The Money Club by Fiona Lowe

HQ, $32.99

Greed, self-interest, and moral drama also feature in the latest novel by Fiona Lowe, the undisputed queen of Australian small-town fiction. The town of Glingilly is rocked when Izzy Harrington’s popular entrepreneur fiancé Brad goes missing. Brad had used his family contacts in the small town to set up a successful investment business, but it now seems that the profits are illusory. As a furious mob camps on Izzy’s lawn demanding their money back, it appears that no one really knew Brad, including Izzy. The Money Club is another enjoyable character-driven tale by Lowe that will keep you happily entertained. .

Dear Prudence by Daniel M. Lavery Scribe, $29.99

For five years Daniel Lavery wrote the popular advice column Dear Prudence for the online American magazine Slate. Like the magazine, the Dear Prudence column attracted an enthusiastic audience and Lavery’s compassionate and idiosyncratic reflections thrust him into the public limelight.

Dear Prudence is a collection of the weirdest and wildest questions, including privacy violations by a spy-cam wearing cat, sent to the column, and a reflection by Lavery on how his public gender transition and split from his religious family impacted on the advice he gave. Often funny and insightful, Dear Prudence is also quite poignant and moving at times.

Cairo Conspiracy (M)

In a quaint seaside fishing village, Adam (Tawfeek Barhom) is accepted at Cairo’s prestigious Al-Azhar University: the centre of power of Sunni Islam. Adam’s arrival unfortunately coincides with the sudden death of the Grand Imam of al-Azhar, setting off a power struggle among the local religious and political leaders, each vying to secure their own interests. Unwittingly, Adam becomes Colonel Ibrahim’s (Fares Fares) latest pawn to help level the playing field.

Drawing inspiration from Umberto Eco’s acclaimed novel, The Name of the Rose (1980), writer-director Tarik Saleh takes a deep dive into the heart of the world’s largest branch of Islam, followed by up to 90 per cent of the global Muslim population. Like Game of Thrones, the devout characters are established, and their positions of power clearly defined, until the

dominoes start tumbling following the vacuum left by the departed leader. The intelligent but morally naïve Adam has walked right into a spy-game reminiscent of cold-war spy thrillers like Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and The Good Shepherd. Adam struggles between his faith and his role as an informant: is Adam being manipulated by his state handler, or is this simply his path as laid out by God?

Via Adam, we navigate the enchanting, enigmatic, and ancient world of the university. This foreign land, however, becomes all too familiar as the striking cinematography captures iconic images of murder, escalating the stakes not only for Adam but also for Sunni Islam worldwide. Verdict: An intriguing and suspenseful homage to classic espionage thrillers.

Best Dressed store styles Canberra’s vulnerable

Need clothes for a job interview, funeral, court, or another important event but can’t afford them?

An op shop about to celebrate its one-year anniversary at its Franklin Street location helps Canberrans become their best dressed selves.

People who are down on their luck walk in to Communities at Work’s Best Dressed store and walk out onto the streets of Manuka with the confidence to blend in with the precinct’s affluent inhabitants.

Trevor Gilbertson, manager of social programs at the not-for-profit, has managed the niche op shop, which only accepts workwear-appropriate clothing, for the past seven years.

In that time, he has seen many clients walk out the door with a “smile on their face and a higher step”.

The Best Dressed store first began in Dickson, as an extension of the Communities at Work’s clothing program, which helps financially vulnerable people who are returning to or starting work by providing business attire free of charge.

Thanks to generous donations, the program had

enough leftover quality menswear and womenswear to start a small store. And so, they did.

“Today, all the money we raise from the store goes back towards our food pantries,” says Trevor.

Just the two pantries service about 500 households a week in Canberra, a number he says has grown dramatically over the past year.

“We’re now seeing new demographics like double-income households come to the food pantry … Canberra is an affluent city but there’s a still a huge part of the population with a lower income level, and it’s a battle for them.”

At the Best Dressed store, a wide range of local shoppers contribute through buying and donating clothing. “People in search of a bargain, treasure hunters, and those who just want to be green.”

Despite stocking a wide range of upscale and designer items - much still with the tags on - the clothing is priced as low as $5, and never more than $50.

The permanent shopfront also provides a new base for the Clothing Program.

Best Dressed coordinator Hayley Storen trains new recruits on how to host clothing appointments, which operate via referrals from employment agencies, Vinnies, and crisis workers from the pantries.

“It’s important for everyone to have access to quality workwear because it helps us fit into our environment … it’s one less stressful thing to worry about,” says Hayley.

One client said, “I was living in my car, knowing that once I got a job, things would change. I did get a job, but none of my work clothes fit because I had been eating differently and I think stress took a toll on my body.

“I went to Communities at Work, even had a shower and a hot meal, and got free work clothes that fit so I could be comfortable in my new job.”

The program can provide up to five outfits for a whole work week.

“I was so relieved – I didn’t want to be judged at my new job, I wanted to fit in, and now I could.”

Four tips for upcycling furniture with Annie Sloan

What’s that on the footpath? Is it the exact piece of furniture you need for your new place?

It’s not exactly in good nick, but furniture flipping has been all the rage on the internet lately … How hard can it be? To leave, or not to leave?

CW’s Anja de Rozario caught up with acclaimed paint guru and inventor of Chalk Paint, Annie Sloan, who shares her top tips for your first restoration project – straight from the mouth of the master.

For the furniture-flipping newbies, how can you tell if old furniture is worth restoring? Are there any red flags to look out for?

“Firstly, look for solid wood furniture. It’s generally more durable and

forever home, decorate Your way, Choose your own Adventure.

easier to restore than furniture made from particle board or laminate. If you already have some at home, great!

“If you find it for free, check for damage. Minimal damage includes scratches, dents, or missing hardware. Avoid furniture with major structural damage, such as broken or wobbly legs.

“Next, consider the style: Look for classic or timeless furniture that can be updated with a new finish or hardware.

“The ultimate red flags to avoid, particularly with free furniture, are signs of pests – bed bugs and termites can be expensive to address as you may require professional help – and strong odours, such as cigarette smoke or mould.”

What are the first steps to restoring a second-hand piece? Where do you get your inspiration from?

“The first step is to decide where it’s going to live. Different spaces will benefit from different colours, and colours will look different depending on their surroundings and light. It’s best to decide where your new piece will live, and then paint it to fit that exact space.

“Choose a colour from a painting nearby, from a cushion in the same room, or in a shade that highlights your wall colour to get the most out of your new furniture. This bespoke attention to detail is what really adds the ‘wow factor’ to your home and makes your interiors look much more considered and luxurious.”

great first project.

“If you try painting something more difficult such as, say, laminated kitchen cabinets on your first attempt, you’re making your life more difficult than it needs to be!”

When giving an old dresser or table a fresh lick of paint, how do you make it look “professionally done”?

“It depends on the look you’re going for - a smooth flat modern finish, – anything is possible!

“I’d recommend doing your research before you start so you’re armed with all the basic information to achieve the specific look you want. Chalk Paint gives a very high-end, velvety finish worthy of professional decorators and furniture restorers – because that’s what I was doing when I invented it.

What is the easiest furniture restoration project that anyone can do?

“Always start small – a bedside table, chair, or lamp base is a

“It’s easy to use, quick to dry, and a doddle to correct. Even if you go horribly wrong, you can fix it within minutes. Overthinking is the enemy of any upcycling project – so just get stuck in!”

OF THE WEEK

Lyneham 102/50 Ellenborough Street

There are few townhouse complexes as tightly held and keenly sought after as ‘The Sanctuary’ in the Inner North suburb of Lyneham. Agent Andrew Browne says this new opportunity will not come along again for quite some time.

“My favourite part of the property is its sheer size,” says Andrew. “There’s over 160 square metres of living space, with one of the most desirable floor plans in the complex.” Featuring a downstairs bedroom, ensuite, and walk-in-robe, plus two generously sized upstairs bedrooms, Townhouse 102 is a downsizer’s dream.

Presented beautifully throughout with Jarrah timber floorboards, Andrew says the quality of the build, meticulously kept gardens, and sense of community among the residents, along with the generous property size, is what makes this a fantastic home. Not to mention the convenience of

nearby amenities.

“Like so much of the Inner North, the location is unbeatable, particularly if you and your family lead an active lifestyle.

“From your front door, you can walk to the National Hockey Centre, Canberra Tennis Centre, Southwell Park, Next Gen Health Club and Yowani Country Club, and relax afterwards at the Old Canberra Inn which is only minutes away.”
