From the editor
Bula! As this edition goes to print, I’m away on my first mid-year holiday longer than five days’ duration (outside of the annual festive shutdown) since CW launched in early 2009. Lucky me was invited to join Canberra Ocean Racing Club’s yacht Namadgi, which is now cruising the waters o Fiji, for two weeks after a masterful crew of five sailed it from New Zealand earlier this month. Never mind that my trip is two months prior to the direct Canberra-Nadi route starting in July (sure to be popular with Canberrans seeking a tropical defrost).
My bags were packed well in advance because I wasn’t using any of the holiday essentials – think sarongs, sandals, togs, cotton shirts – here in the weeks before departure.
Having checked the weather forecast, the minimum and maximum temps are expected to hover in the 20s. As some precipitation is anticipated, I packed my raincoat –especially for that day when “tons of rain” (according to the Fiji weather site) is forecast. Yikes! Do you think the BOM should adopt that terminology?
Reasons to be grateful this past week include the wonder of jet flight, the heartwarming Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea hosted by Governor-General David Hurley and Her Excellency Linda Hurley at Government House to thank Cancer Council ACT volunteers (coronation quiche, anyone?), quality cinema and live theatre, and Canberra’s many volunteers. Take care,

Weathering storms to complete Dainere’s rainbow
Neil Armstrong is famous for being the first man to set foot on the moon but is lesser known as a father who lost his twoyear-old daughter to brain cancer.
This happened in 1962 so it’s hardly “news” today. What should make headlines, however, is the fact that in the 61 years since then, the devastating statistics for brain cancer haven’t changed.
The lack of research funds is exasperating for Gungahlin mum of four, Yvonne Anthoney, who lost her youngest daughter, Dainere, to brain cancer 10 years ago - when she was only 15.
Yvonne says Neil Armstrong must have anguished over the fact that scientists could send a man to the moon but couldn’t find a cure for his daughter. In 2023, Yvonne is incredulous that community fundraising makes up 100 per cent of funds for
childhood brain cancer initial research.
“Brain cancer is the least funded of all cancer research,” Yvonne says, “because results aren’t always happening and a lot of research funding from the government is based on results. That’s why community funding is so important. If there’s none, nothing’s happening.”
Yvonne is holding Dainere’s cat, Tinkerbelle, on her lap. There are photos and inspirational quotes around her home of Dainere and her bedroom is just as she left it. This is a mother who will do anything to find a cure for this horrendous disease. Brain cancer kills more children than any other disease.
“They say it’s rare but over a classroom of children every year are dying from it – that’s a classroom of children that could go on to be scientists, doctors, lawyers, change-makers to
the world,” Yvonne says. “They’re having their lives stolen. That’s unjust. That has to change.”
Scientists still don’t know the cause or risk factors of brain cancer. Unlike adult cancers where there are lifestyle or genetic factors, brain cancer can occur in a newborn baby.
Dainere’s type of brain cancer was called Medulloblastoma. Over the past 30 years, there’s been a 58 per cent increase in children diagnosed with this form of cancer.
“There hasn’t been much change in the devastating statistics for decades,”

Yvonne says. “That’s just not good enough. It’s not fair. They’re losing their futures. You take your child to the doctor and they say ‘go home and make memories’. It’s a cruel disease, too, because even if there is treatment available, it needs to be so toxic to go through the blood-brain barrier and the children are left with dreadful side-effects.”
Incredibly, Dainere raised $100,000 for research by herself, following her diagnosis when she was just 11. Her family (Yvonne, husband Stephen, sister Nalani and brother Jarrett) has continued Dainere’s quest for a cure, raising $632,000 to date. Every cent flows directly to Dainere’s Rainbow Brain Tumour Research Fund, a legacy to Dainere. These vital funds support the research of Dainere’s oncologist, Associate Professor David Ziegler at the Sydney Children’s Hospital Kids Cancer Centre.
“He’s doing world-class research,” Yvonne says. “We’ve got the best minds there and they’re producing some incredible results in the laboratory. He’s created individualised treatment, rather than one size fits all.The
treatment fits in with the biology of the child’s brain tumour. Clinical trials are a big start.”
Symptom awareness is also key. “Dainere had vomiting in the morning, which could have been anything,” Yvonne says. “Her eyes started flicking, she was a bit lethargic and at school, the teacher noticed she was starting to write funny and we thought she might have a learning disability. It’s hard to diagnose.”
Yvonne and Stephen took Dainere to a pediatrician and were then sent to hospital for an MRI. Suddenly, they were in a room with a box of tissues on the table and were told Dainere had a brain tumour. Things happened so quickly – Dainere was still in her school uniform when they were flown to Sydney by light aircraft for a 12-hour operation on her brain.
“I still remember the neurosurgeon coming in after surgery and she just started crying,” Yvonne recalls. “She said, ‘I’m so sorry I couldn’t get it all’.”
From then on, Dainere was on a mission. Her bravery is inspiring. Despite her diagnosis, Dainere wanted to help
others. She wanted things to change.
“She’d be so ill during chemotherapy and she’d say ‘but there’s people worse off than me’. She inspired us. We say, she left footprints on so many hearts and lives. Dainere said it wouldn’t be in her lifetime, but she had a quote ‘my little voice could only make a small difference but together many voices can create change’.”
So, come on Canberra, come together to help Dainere make a change. Come along to Dainere’s largest fundraising event, the Bibbidi Bobbidi Ball (Dainere loved Disney) on Saturday 24 June (the date Dainere died) at the National Arboretum Canberra.
And if you noticed that Dainere’s Rainbow Fund logo only has six colours, that was Dainere’s idea. A seventh colour will be added when there’s a cure.

Sofronoff enquiry: Director of Public Prosecutions in trouble
First, congratulations to Finland on its success in dropping the wholesale price of electricity by 75 per cent after opening its newest nuclear power plant (which produces 15 per cent of that country’s energy needs).
Congratulations also to Peter Dutton for finally saying in his budget reply speech that nuclear energy has to be in the mix if we are ever to get to net zero by 2050.
Many people have commented on the federal budget already, but one big disappointment was the lack of any additional expenditure for defence over the next four–year budget cycle. Indeed, the army had big cuts made to its armoured fighting vehicle replacement, reducing it to one-third of what was originally intended.
The Sofronoff inquiry into the ACT’s criminal justice system is fascinating to watch. I rarely have cause to congratulate Green Attorney-General Shane Rattenbury, but in picking Queensland judge Walter Sofronoff KC to conduct this inquiry, he has selected a man
with an impeccable record as a judicial officer and whose forensic skills are of the first order. Well done, Shane Rattenbury!
It was sad to see Director of Public Prosecutions Shane Drumgold give his evidence and, under questioning, change that evidence on a number of occasions. It is not uncommon for very good advocates to not make the best witnesses, and the DPP should not be too hard on himself when assessing the evidence he gave.
It does, however, look to me as if he has breached one of the most basic rules for any advocate: never get emotionally and personally involved in the matter you are acting in. His various statements in support of Brittany Higgins and his obvious issues with the investigating police seem to have led to his almost having an emotional stake in the matter. If so, that is a shame.
I know it is sometimes hard not to. I recall doing it myself. I once acted for an abused wife in Muswellbrook in the late 1970s. She was
trying to escape from her horrible husband, who would not let her take their seven-yearold son. I very much sympathised with her, to the extent it clouded my judgment of the case. Apart from stuffing up an adjournment, luckily no lasting damage was done, and the lady ultimately got custody, but my personal feelings for her predicament and dislike of her husband affected my judgement. It did not help my client. Fortunately, apart from sometimes being annoyed at various members of the bench for their weak sentences, I never got personally involved as an ACT prosecutor.
As we know, Mr Drumgold has taken leave, and his deputy Anthony Williamson SC has become acting DPP. Should Mr Drumgold not return to his job for whatever reason, the ACT government could do a lot worse than appoint Mr Williamson as the next DPP. He has had extensive legal experience, has been a member of Civil Liberties Australia, and has prosecuted since 2009. He is certainly no bleeding heart, but he has a reputation for being firm but fair.

AWARDED 2023 COMMUNITY St Clare’s College
ZERO EMISSIONS GRANT
The ACT Community Zero Emissions Grants program supports projects that help reduce emissions and increase the community’s resilience to climate change. Round 6 of the grants program provided over $155,000 in funding for six community-based projects.
St Clare’s College is excited to announce that they are the recipient of a grant to the value of $20,000 which will be used to develop a vegetable garden for a paddock to plate initiative within the junior Food Technology and senior Hospitality classes. A section of the garden will be for Australian native Indigenous plants and herbs that we will use to develop student understanding of these ingredients in modern cookery, as well as in traditional Aboriginal foods. This garden will be used by students in classes, and supported by the broader school community led by
the College’s Sustainability Captain and her Sustainability group during lunch time club meetings and extra-curricular activities.
The garden development will also incorporate a composting system to reduce the amount of organic waste from food classrooms currently heading to landfill, an irrigation system to ensure longevity of the plantings over the school holidays, and a small greenhouse for the propagation of seedlings. The incorporation of the garden program, and the paddock to plate approach, will raise awareness and develop practical skills in all students in the College.
Ms Ellie Rowland, Leader of Technologies, is a key driver for this program. Ms Rowland is excited by the opportunities to expand current priorities within her portfolio and a renewed focus on student action.
Dr Ann Cleary, College Principal, said “St Clare’s
College is an ACT leader in women’s education and believes that education is the key to developing a culture of sustainability. St Clare’s is looking to further develop and embed sustainable practices into every day routines involving staff and students, and to engage with the wider College community in building and supporting this initiative.”

Seeing a doctor is now more affordable
Canberrans know how hard it is to see a bulk-billing doctor in the capital.
Under the Coalition, Canberra has seen bulk-billing rates slide to among the lowest in the country – below the national average of 42.7 per cent. As a result, many Canberrans have not been able to afford the care they need. As your representative, I have been highlighting this need at every opportunity (including recently in this publication) and advocating for our government to address the bulkbilling shortfall in our city, which also serves as a health hub for our broader region.
That’s why I was so pleased that the Budget included a historic investment of $5.7 billion to strengthen Medicare – making it more affordable and accessible. This is a game changer for primary care in the capital, where it’s steadily been getting harder and more expensive to see a doctor.
The centrepiece of this announcement is $3.5 billion to triple incentives for GPs to bulk-bill. It’s the largest-ever investment in bulk-billing incentives in Medicare history, and will revolutionise our health care landscape, with an immediate benefit for 11.6 million Australians and farreaching benefits for patients and communities across the nation.
This cash injection means 19,887 children under 16 and 22,030 pensioners and other concession card holders in Canberra will be bulk-billed. The bulk-billing incentive in Canberra will also rise from $46.35 to $62.05 – an increase of 34 per cent.
The Medicare rebate will also increase for standard consultations with nurse practitioners and participating midwives. By cutting the cost of seeing a medical practitioner, the Albanese Labor
Government will ensure that every Australian, regardless of their ability to pay, can get the medical attention they need.
Australia’s health care delivery will also be modernised through reforms to increase access to primary care and promote coordinated care teams – in response to the recommendations of the Strengthening Medicare Taskforce.
A $445.1 million investment over five years will enable GPs to work in collaboration with nurses and allied health professionals to deliver comprehensive and holistic care – so patients can benefit from a more integrated and personalised approach to their health care needs.
Our hospitals have been put under intense pressure by the pandemic, and are still struggling. By redirecting care from hospitals to community settings, patients will get appropriate and timely treatment while also lifting the strain on hospital resources.
The Budget also has measures to improve access to multidisciplinary care for individuals with chronic conditions in underserviced communities. An urgent care clinic will also be established on Canberra’s southside – one of 50 across the country to take pressure off the hospital system.
This Budget highlights Labor’s commitment to fixing our sick health care system – for both medical practitioners and their patients.
The government is fixing a decade of Coalition Government cuts and neglect to our health system – including a six-year freeze on the Medicare rebate – because every Australian deserves access to universal, timely, and world class medical care.
Labor built Medicare, and we will always protect it.

“There are no flights scheduled for Canberra at the moment, it’s still all up in the air” (pun intended),” according to NGA communications officer Jess Barnes. However, a conservation requirement is that she flies – somewhere. Jess says that after watching the response in regional towns, “she deserves to be seen elsewhere”. So, how’s the jetlag?
“Skywhale and Skywhalepapa are amazing artworks but also aircraft,” Jess says. “Hot air balloons are required to undergo a thorough annual airworthiness certification and both have passed this extensive test, they are airworthy and in good condition.”
After each flight, conservators and the pilot closely monitor the condition of the balloons and then they are fully condition checked by the Gallery’s textile conservators
before they return to their storage boxes.
“Any grass, accretions, staining are removed from the fabric,” Jess says. “They must also be completely dry as the dew from the morning flight will turn to mould and degrade the special balloon fabric.”
Fortunately, regular flying actually helps with the preservation of the artwork. That is, if they actually fly.
As artist Patricia Piccinini says: “You need to be lucky to see them. The wind and weather must be right, essentially nature must allow us to see them and we cannot control that. We are lucky if we get to see them, just like we are lucky if we get to see so many of the wonders of the natural world. It reminds us that not everything is just for us whenever we want it. And that we should be grateful”.

Free new nutrition program for ACT parents
Feeding children should be both elementary and alimentary, but many young parents find that it poses them problems. However, a free new program, run by the ACT Nutrition Support Service, will help Canberra parents from pregnancy through toddlerhood.
“The first 1,000 days in a child’s life [between conception and two years of age] is a really crucial period of time where we can set the foundation for healthy eating habits and establish the healthy profile of a growing child from conception until two,” dietitian Leanne Elliston explains.
To that end, Nutrition Australia ACT (the ACT NSS’s ‘parent’ body) has developed a three-stage program, Feeding Healthy Futures, that educates parents about nutrition in pregnancy, introducing solids, and
transitioning to ‘family food’.
Each stage of the program will last for three weeks, and consists of three face-to-face hour-long group sessions at ACT libraries.
The program aims to reach 75 women. It is in the second half of recruitment now, and there are spaces in Gungahlin and Coombs classes beginning this week and next. More information is available on the ACT NSS website.
“We’re there to support parents throughout that whole thousand-day journey,” Ms Elliston said. “We’re really helping to set them up for a healthy life ahead.”
The ACT Government has provided more than $163,000 for the Feeding Healthy Futures program through its Health Promotion Grants. Full story online.

A pleasant change of routine at this week’s end will bring a sense of spontaneity and fun, so if you have nothing planned yet, consider something different for a change. Your hard work will pay off with a domestic or family matter, so be diligent.

TASTE
Winter warmer
Winter is o cially here! Apple pie is good for the soul at any time of year, but especially now, when it’s hard to resist hauling into hibernation. Add some extra indulgence (as a reward for staying warm) with a dark choc crumble.
WITH TASTE EDITOR, ANJA DE ROZARIO
Apple and dark choc crumble tart
Serves 8 | Prep 40 mins | Cook 45 mins
For the tart crust
180g unsalted butter, softened
2 cups plain flour
1/2 cup icing sugar
1/4 tsp salt
For the apple filling
5-6 Granny Smith apples
1 tbsp lemon juice
1/3 cup caster sugar
2 tbsp cornflour
1 tsp ground cinnamon
1/4 tsp ground cardamom
For the dark chocolate crumble
80g unsalted butter
1 cup self-raising flour
1/4 cup brown sugar
1/3 cup almonds, roughly chopped
100g dark chocolate, roughly chopped
Preheat oven to 180°C.
Place all tart crust ingredients into a food processor and pulse it until it comes together
into a smooth ball. Transfer the ball to a 24cm quiche or tart pan and press the mixture evenly across the base and up the side of the tart case. Set aside in the refrigerator while you prepare the filling and topping.
Peel and core the apples. Cut the apples into quarters and thinly slice each quarter into 6 thin slices and half those in the middle. Place all apples into a large bowl and add the lemon juice, sugar, cornflour, cinnamon, and cardamom and mix well.
To make the crumble, place the butter, flour and sugar in a bowl and rub the mixture between your fingertips until the mixture clumps together in medium to large crumbs. Add almonds and dark chocolate to the mixture and stir to combine.
Remove the tart crust from the fridge and top with the apple mixture, then cover the apples with the crumble mixture and bake for 45-50 minutes until the crust and crumble are golden.
Set aside to cool for 10 minutes then serve warm with ice cream.

War in Cities exposes devasting impacts of urban warfare
Long gone are the days when battles or wars were primarily fought on empty fields or deserts, as more and more conflicts make their way into populated towns and cities. An exhibition presented by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) takes these conflicts from the streets and into the minds and hearts of the broader global community. War in Cities comes to Gorman Arts Centre from 31 May to 6 June.
For many years, the ICRC has been concerned about the impact of urban warfare on civilian populations. The exhibition shines a light on what it looks like to be caught in the crossfire and the devasting lasting impacts it can have.
“It’s not just the loss of life, but also the destruction of critical civilian infrastructure, cultural sites, schools,
houses and people’s livelihoods … Then also physically, it forces displacement,” says Clementine Rendle, Regional Legal Advisor at the ICRC Mission Australia.
Thousands upon thousands of people are displaced every year because of urban warfare, either by fear or because their essential services have been cut off. Ms Rendle says the long-lasting impacts of being without a home, community and education can be evident for generations to come.
“For example, in Libya between April and July in 2019 over 120,000 people were displaced, which is massive,” she says.
The exhibits have been gathered from war-torn cities immediately following hostilities, collected from homes and buildings that have been
ruined. Quite a number of the items come from cities north and west of Baghdad, Iraq in 2017.
“You can see from the impact on these everyday objects how devastating the violence actually is. We seek to make it a bit more tangible for people as to how violence touches the lives of everyone in those urban environments,” Ms Rendle says.
There are also audio-visual elements that help tell the stories, as well as commissioned charcoal works by Sydney artist, Marwa Charmand. Ms Rendle says the artist’s work updates the exhibition and puts it into a global context with images inspired by places such as Myanmar, Yemen, Ukraine and her own family in Afghanistan. Young playwright debuts with Happy Meals, Happy Kids
A happy meal has been a long-standing tradition to brighten a child’s day, but what happens when the last one is sold, and the last McDonald’s has closed down? Set in a dark world and exploring the tough decisions teenagers are going to face, Happy Meals, Happy Kids hits the stage at Daramalan College for one night only, Friday 26 May.
The debut play from Sunny Productions sees a group of six teenagers meet for a study session in a derelict McDonald’s in a not-too-far-off dystopian future. The breakfast club of the Apocalypse features the teenager stereotypes you expect to see – a popular girl with a troubled home life, an academic who is on the verge of a breakdown, and others. Together, they work on an assignment that will have lasting impacts. Playwright Jade Breen says it is an insight into the issues teenagers experience.
“Once I’m out of school, how am I going to make an income? How am I going to provide for myself? How am I going to rent in a housing crisis? … How can I establish an identity in a world that is so deeply
ingrained in their ways?” says Breen.
Taking the reins with the production, Breen is also the producer, director, casting director and actor. Founding Sunny Productions through an entrepreneurship class designed specifically for driven double major drama students, the course takes theatrical learning further than a grade and creates professional adjacent opportunities. Breen says it is showing students that the arts are a viable career option.
Happy Meals, Happy Kids is very much a reflection of the playwright’s own experience of approaching adulthood and the mounting pressures of life ahead. Breen says their generation is just a few years out of making big decisions regarding the consequences of things they have never had control over, such as climate change.
“I think it’s very clear that the directions we’re currently going in are not great. So, what’s going to happen when our planet is gone, what’s going to
How are we supposed to regain that and rebuild a sustainable environment, a liveable environment?” Breen says.

Book talk
This week, Jeff Popple reviews three new Australian crime fiction novels. More of Jeff’s reviews can be found on his blog: murdermayhemandlongdogs.com
The Rush by Michelle Prak Simon & Schuster, $32.99
Michelle Prak’s debut novel, The Rush, is a terrific thriller set in an Australian outback beset by flooding rains. Told through the eyes of four well-crafted female characters, it moves at a brisk pace as the women, and assorted male characters, make their way to a remote country pub before the rain hits. Included among their number is a killer who is happy to take advantage of the chaos caused by the flooding. Prak makes effective use of the shifting viewpoints, the landscape, and changes in the timeline to generate maximum suspense, and the book powers to an exciting climax. A great read.
No Trace by Michael Trant Penguin, $32.99
Also set in a remote part of Australia with flooding on the horizon is Michael Trant’s No Trace. Skilled dog-trapper Gabe Ahern has been successfully hiding out on an isolated Pilbara cattle station since the bloody conclusion to Trant’s last book, Wild Dogs. He seems to have dodged the bad guys that are after him, until some strange occurrences on the station make him suspect that hidden among the tourists looking for an authentic outback experience is someone with more sinister motives. This is a good dusty noir tale that combines mounting tension and violence with a neat murder mystery. Highly recommended.
The Signatory by Stuart Black Glass House Books, $33
Set a long distance from the outback is Stuart Black’s Sydney-based thriller, The Signatory. The sale of his start-up company to an international firm has made Sam Bailley very rich, but when his brash CFO goes missing, he finds himself in big trouble. On the run from the police and a faceless network of conspirators, Sam discovers that you have to fight dirty to win. This is a fast paced and engaging thriller that makes good use of its big business setting. The plotting is sleek, and it builds to an exciting finale. An enjoyable change from the usual rural crime.

November (M)
In Paris, November 13, 2015, an anti-terrorist sub-directorate enjoys a night away from work before news of an attack at the Stade de France sports stadium forces the team to report to their lead, Heloise (Sandrine Kiberlain), and her chief commander, Fred (Jean Dujardin), in a race against time to hunt down the terrorists before they strike again.
Based on true events, this movie is a tour de force spanning the globe in a relentless pursuit of a small number of terrorists who have left a hideous mark on the beautiful face of the city of Paris. Via the point-of-view of the anti-terrorist unit, little is known about the antagonists sans grainy photographs, footage, and audio, leaving the audience without a concrete, singular villain to focus their sense of justice on.
French mega-star Jean Dujardin captures our focus amidst a cast of professional
and functional investigators. Without backstories or character arcs, the team is dedicated to their jobs; dispassionately following protocol to identify and apprehend the terrorists.
Like a Bourne movie, the action is frantic, frenetic, and visceral. We experience the relentless pursuit alongside our team members as they doggedly adhere to procedure, at times straying a bit too far from the letter of the law. The investigators are not superheroes, but rather fallible individuals who not only strive to stop the terrorists but also to ensure that any charges brought against them in the future will hold up.
Verdict: A nail-biting and immersive thriller. 4 stars.

One-stop giftshops: Four places that support local makers
World Environment Day, 5 June, reminds us that shopping and supporting locals is another way to live sustainably. Buying ‘Canberra-made’ is the bread and butter of these four establishments.

Pop! Canberra
Shop G12/27 Lonsdale St, Braddon
Pop’s door is still open, meaning Canberrans should take full advantage of one of Braddon’s coolest stops. Best said by store owner Gabe Trew, everyone knows that everything stocked by Pop! is Canberra-made. Open every day, and for late night shopping until 9pm on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, this inner-city gem recently celebrated over 250 local makers (that’s 5000 individual products) stocked within its bright pink walls.
Under $50 pick: The 3D printed Belconnen Owl ($35) by In Iteration. Why wouldn’t you want to gift your friend one so it can stare back at them in their own lounge room?
Editor’s pick: Pop’s iconic ‘earring wall’ holds over 2000 unique pairs. As well as adding to the other-worldly atmosphere, you are practically bound to find a pair that suits any loved one’s style.
Craft ACT: Craft + Design Centre
Level 1, North Building, 180 London Circuit, Canberra This local not-for-profit supports artists, craft practitioners, designers, and makers at every stage of their careers with exhibitions, events, and yes indeed, a gift shop. With the bitter Canberra winter approaching, local makers like Lisa Molvig offer handknitted cowls and beanies, while Ian Jones provides wood-fired cups to wrap our cold hands around. Both the shop and gallery are open Wednesday to Saturday from 12 noon to 4pm, but did you know Craft ACT also has an online shop with sections for gifts under $50 and $100?
Under $50 pick: You can’t go past Annie Trevillian’s hand screen printed, linen tea towels that celebrate Canberra ($40) and framed prints by Eggpicnic for $80.
Editor’s pick: Using shattered waste glass, local artist Ngaio creates her ‘Gaia Bowls’ ($66-$330). Fused together and finished with gold leaf, these are works of art for the home.

Take a cold shower
In Poland, a man sits meditating on Mt Snezka, at 5,300ft, the pinnacle of the Silesian Mountain range. The temperature is 10 degrees below zero and he is naked except for a pair of shorts, his name is Wim Hof. The re-emergence of cold therapy is mostly due to Hof who has trailblazed the popularisation as well as the research into the health benefits of cold exposure.
You only have to hold some ice cubes in your hand for a few seconds to register discomfort, yet, learn to master the body’s response to cold and you may be able to unlock some surprising benefits. Cold therapy
– Egyptians used it as far back as 2500 BCE – that has found its way to contemporary prominence and with the onset of the colder months in Canberra, what better time to explore its potential benefits.
First, a caveat: don’t go jumping into Canberra’s lakes or waterways! Rapid immersion in cold water can cause dangerous changes in heart rates and breathing. Cold therapy advocates suggest controlled and gradated exposure to cold with some surprising results.
Pain relief and muscle healing
Ice baths are a common feature of post-game recovery in elite sport, where it’s used to mitigate muscle soreness. Studies have shown that cold therapy can combat the pain of rheumatoid arthritis as well as speeding healing more generally.
Aids fat burning
Being cold forces the body to work harder to stay warm. Studies have shown that cold exposure increases the body’s stores of naturally occurring brown fat tissue (BAT) which, unlike white fat tissue, is active in burning calories and using energy. Cold exposure essentially turns calories from food into heat.
Fights inflammation
Studies have shown exposure to cold temperatures raises levels of a protein called adiponectin that is linked to reducing inflammation.
Hof advocates a method of combining cold exposure with breathing techniques to influence both the sympathetic nervous system and the
immune system. Learning to regulate your response to stress is the key here.
Results have been impressive showing increased production of anti-inflammatory mediators and a subduing of the pro-inflammatory cytokine response, which suggest promise for utilising these methods to combat conditions like auto-immune disease.
To try cold therapy for yourself, try finishing your morning shower with a blast of cold water. Start by counting to 10 and work your way up to a minute. Initially, your breathing may become ragged, but try and breathe steadily and evenly and notice how the discomfort of the cold eases and becomes tolerable. Congratulations, you’ve just wired a new pathway in your nervous system that gives your body and mind a different way of dealing with stress.

Marking WED for every budget HOME
Monday 5 June is World Environment Day 2023, reminding all of us to make small but meaningful steps to care for our planet. It’s not that easy being green, particularly if you are working on a small budget. However, even as little as $10 can help contribute to changing the way we influence the environment.
From insulating your home, planting a tree, or reducing single-use plastic pollution with a keep cup, here are four ways to mark World Environment Day.
Most affordable
There are numerous beautiful tree varieties that can be planted in the chilly Canberra winter for World Environment Day, including the richly coloured Acer palmatum, commonly known as Japanese maple. However, if that doesn’t fit your budget or your outdoor
space, the Foundation for National Parks & Wildlife’s will plant one tree for every $10 donation, helping protect and grow natural habitats for endangered species.
To find out more, visit fnpw.org.au/ project/plant-a-tree-for-me
You can also invest in a keep cup to reduce plastic consumption. Many local coffee shops will allow you to use your own travel mug, reducing your carbon footprint, particularly if you are a daily hot

Mossy Point NSW 6 Estuary Way
With six double size bedrooms, sprawling living spaces, and a fully fenced 5,407m2 block, ‘spacious’ doesn’t begin to describe this family home.

For silver nomads that prefer to have a luxurious homebase, this space easily accommodates boats, classic cars, caravans, and trailers.
“Once inside the home, the wide hallways
and open plan living spaces ensure a feeling of flow and calm,” says Karen. “With many di erent spaces to relax and enjoy without being in each other’s pockets.”
Located in the keenly sought after ‘The Estuary Estate’ in Mossy Point, this is location is a gem. It’s embedded in a close-knit community of larger lot properties, and only five minutes away from Broulee’s stunning beaches and the best schools in the area.
