Happy birthday to Lifeline Canberra’s Book Lovers Lane bookstore which turns three this week! It was a glimmer of hope during the pandemic, setting up at the Fyshwick Markets in winter 2020 after the Lifeline Canberra Bookfairs had to be cancelled for who knew how long. This ‘pivot’ (remember when that was word of the year?) saw our local crisis support charity find a permanent shop from which to sell its endless supply of donated books and sundry items four days a week, every week, providing a steady source of income, while eager booklovers no longer had to wait for the triannual Bookfairs to seek treasures and support a worthy cause while shopping.

That said, bibliophiles and bargain hunters still flock to the ever-popular Bookfairs, as evidenced by the 9,285 good folk who visited the Southside fair last weekend. It was remarkable to see the dedicated sta and throngs of volunteers helping in various capacities – from warehouse operations, transport, and crowd control to stocking rows of trestle tables organised by genre, toting up sales, check-out, and more – to create a happy, well-oiled machine. One 94-year-old visitor from Sydney was “astonished”, remarking he’d never seen anything like it before in his life!

Reasons to be grateful this past week include the extraordinary Lifeline Canberra sta and volunteers, especially the highly trained telephone crisis supporters, and everyone who supports this organisation, including book donors and buyers. Take care,

High tea, high fashion and a feel-good high with Hartley Lifecare

A fashion fiesta, high tea bonanza, and entertainment spectacular, Hartley Lifecare’s feel-good event of the year returns next month to raise funds for the local disability support organisation. Serving lovely looks, tasty treats, and a high that will stay with you for days, the Hartley High Tea and Fashion Showcase takes over Albert Hall on Saturday 5 August.

This year’s theme ‘Effortless Elegance’ invites attendees to step out in simple yet stylish looks. Organisers suggest combining simple, classic pieces with luxurious fabrics that are flattering to the body’s natural

shape. The divine is in the detail – a quaint piece of jewellery or statement handbag can add the perfect touch to your unforced, relaxed and classy look.

Albert Hall takes a page from the books of Paris Fashion Week with its purpose-built runway ready for models to strut their stuff. Our glamorous cover stars, Hartley clients Joanne and Carol-Jayne, are two of the models who will be striking a pose – or two – on the day. Having already selected their outfits and practising their make-up, the women are sure that the guests will be just as excited

about their looks as they are.

“I’ll be at the fashion parade and pose,” says Joanne.

“I’ll do a sexy pose … I’ll do it all by myself, [I learnt it] from The Full Monty,” smiles Carol-Jayne.

Joining Joanne, Carol- Jayne and other members of the Hartley community on the catwalk are the beauties from Victoria

Models, volunteering their time to be part of the joyous occasion. The entertainment doesn’t stop when the models step off the stage; returning for another showstopping performance are The Extreme Stars, who have been busy working on a dance routine just for the event.

Now we have a contest

First, the new Governor of the Reserve Bank, Michele Bullock, looks like a good appointment, and I’m sorry to hear that Ben Wallace, the UK defence minister, will resign. Quite understandable, as his silly PM won’t increase defence expenditure much past 2 per cent, and certainly not to 3 per cent of GDP, as Mr Wallace wanted. (In my view, all NATO countries, as well as Australia and NZ, should spend that amount.)

Congratulations are due to local Gold Coast identity Cameron Caldwell on retaining the federal seat of Fadden with a swing to the LNP of 4.2 per cent (about 2.6 per cent two-party-preferred).

This is the first real setback the Albanese government has had; the federal government can dress it up all they like, but the result is a higher swing against a sitting government than the normal 1.7 per cent swing to opposition in an opposition-held seat at a by-election.

There are a number of reasons why the

opposition did well on the weekend, and not so well in the recent Aston by-election in Victoria. An important one was that cost-of-living increases are starting to bite, and Peter Dutton and the opposition are now offering voters a real alternative, and not just a Labor / Green-lite small target.

As the cost of living continues to increase, the unseemly, unnecessary, headlong rush into green energy gathers pace, and ordinary Australians become aware of the dangers we face from ‘woke’ nonsense in our institutions, a strong opposition highlighting these issues will gather strength. A series of business closures and blackouts / brownouts next year may well be enough to see the federal Albanese government be a one-term government. Helpful hint, Albo: take a leaf out of President Xi’s book when it comes to energy policy.

I have said before that the fundamental reason Scott Morrison lost the last election was because there was little to separate the

parties in policy terms. I must say I would have preferred Peter Dutton to have been PM in 2018, but to Mr Morrison’s credit, he did win in 2019 (by being different to the ALP and the Greens). This brings me to the point: should ScoMo resign from parliament? Defeated PMs usually do. One reason may well have been that whilst previous PMs were all elected to federal parliament prior to 2004, and thus benefited from the old, very generous pension scheme, ScoMo was elected in 2007, after the scheme closed. I would not be surprised if he simply can’t afford to resign at present.

Most people don’t want the old leader hanging around like a bad smell – but if s/he is doing a good job as a local member (and can’t afford to leave), it may be something we have to get used to. At any rate, I would imagine the Liberal Party may well preselect a new face for the Shire at the next election, if ScoMo has not left by then.

to eliminate viral hepatitis by 2030 Hepatitis

Old Parliament House, the John Gorton Building, the National Carillon, and the National Museum of Australia are just a few of the many local buildings and monuments that will be lit up green for World Hepatitis Day, Friday 28 July. Green, the colour of life and vitality, will shine in honour and acknowledgement of those a ected by viral hepatitis. It is also an urgent demand for action from Canberra’s decision-makers to give the “green light” in prioritising the elimination of viral hepatitis by 2030.

“Hepatitis can’t wait,” says Executive Director of Hepatitis ACT, Sarah Ahmed. “Australia’s Department of Health has signed onto the World Health Organizations’ goal to eliminate hepatitis by 2030.”

Worldwide, 325 million people live with hepatitis, and more than 1.1 million lives are lost each year to hepatitis B and hepatitis C.

“Australia has committed,” Ms Ahmed says. “We cannot continue to do business as usual and hope that something will change.

“We need more resources and more funding to take hepatitis awareness, education, testing and treatment to the next level if we are to achieve our goal of elimination by 2030.” There is a long way to go in the next seven years. According to Ms Ahmed, the first step towards elimination is education.

“The misinformation and fear around viral hepatitis is the first hurdle that we need to get over. We assume that hepatitis C is only amongst a certain group of people. That’s not true,” Ms Ahmed says.

“We have met many people who contracted it as

teenagers, from a dodgy tattoo or piercing – things we have all done in our youth. Most hepatitis B is spread from mother to child during pregnancy. There should be no stigma attached to this.” If you were born before 1990, it is important to check whether you are vaccinated for hepatitis B.

“There is an easy cure for hepatitis C; a few pills a

without the help of ACT Health,” she says. “However, one-o funding is not the way to go. We need sustained continued investment in the sector.

“We need more initiatives like this to tackle hepatitis B as well.

“Canberra has been leading Australia in so many ways, from our Covid vaccination rates to our harm reduction policies. We could once again be leaders in eliminating hepatitis by 2030.

“Our aim here at Hepatitis ACT is to be out of a job by 2030,” Ms Ahmed smiles.

Hepatitis ACT is open Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm and is located at 36 David Street, Turner.

day for eight to 12 weeks with minimal side e ects.”

Hepatitis is the largest contributor to hepatocellular carcinoma, the most common form of liver cancer, which is one of the fastest growing causes of cancer-related deaths in Australia.

“No one should have to die from liver cancer because they had hepatitis B or hepatitis C. It’s totally preventable,” Ms Ahmed says.

One prick is all it takes

Since 2022, Hepatitis ACT provides finger prick testing for hepatitis C. Canberrans no longer have to go get a blood test. “It’s a quick little finger prick, a few drops of blood, and you get your results within the hour,” Ms Ahmed says.

The service will continue to be funded until June 2024. “This project could not have gone ahead

TO THE EDITOR

ED for emergencies

Bill Stefaniak (CW 13 July) relates the tale of a person who gave up and went home after waiting eight hours in the emergency department of (ex) Calvary Hospital. It makes me wonder if they should have been there in the first place. I thought emergency departments were for emergencies - heart attacks, strokes, broken bones, babies and children with worrying symptoms, etc. If someone is in a position to give up waiting and go home, you have to ask if their situation really was an emergency. Perhaps a visit to the GP would have been a much better option.

Culling is the lesser of two evils

The Save Our Kangaroos folk have really ramped up their media campaign this year. If only there were more facts and a bit more balance.

If we accept the numbers quoted, over 10,000 are culled and kangaroos are nearly bludgeoned to extinction each year. It therefore seems odd that we can still manage to find 10,000 to cull the next year and that thousands more are involved in road accidents.

Opponents of the cull focus on the actual cost of the cull and avoid talking about the real costs to taxpayers because of their overpopulation. Incidents in Australia’s roadkill capital involving kangaroos are estimated to be around 4,000 each year. This cost to the ACT, if you add insurance premiums, no claims excess, and vehicle repairs, exceeds $10 million

each year. Surely the number of accidents is related to the number of kangaroos.

To suggest that numbers are reducing is laughable when a visit to most green areas in the ACT shows there are still plenty there.

Opponents of the cull use highly emotive language to talk about the cruelty and trauma of the cull. Where’s the talk about the suffering of the kangaroos being killed on our roads each day and the agonies of those who hop away to die? Canberrans do care about the welfare of our kangaroos but are not taken in by all the emotive language and hyperbole around the cull.

Of course there are solutions, but denying there is a problem will not allow a proper discussion.

Government waste

Thank you, Errol Good and Vi Evans, for responding (CW 13 July) to Bill Stefaniak’s op-ed lamenting government waste and pondering how elected officials can trash $76 million of ratepayers’ funds without much flinch. The only way a hammer can drop is at general election if registered voters are astute enough to vote along efficiency and performance lines and avoid lightweight personality razzamatazz voting like the plague. Don’t panic because culling is approaching, then we can refresh with another crop and hopefully find better traction, intelligence, performance and efficiency.

Why I am a Scientist Christian

Sometimes, friends ask me why I am a Christian Scientist. I tell them it’s because it brings me both joy and comfort. With it, I feel more able to cope with the challenges life inevitably presents me with. I feel as though it helps me to make better informed decisions, to recognise the qualities that make life ‘work right’, and it teaches me that there are spiritual laws that, if followed, bring harmony, healing and a sense of security to my life.

The Bible tells me that God is Love (I John 4:8). It also tells me that man (meaning all of us) is the image and likeness of God (Genesis 1: 26, 27). It is reassuring to know that my true nature is Love, which is expressed in a myriad

of shades – in gentleness, kindness, forgiveness, selflessness, unselfishness, affection, empathy, generosity, loyalty, courtesy and many more. I know from the Bible also that God’s love is unconditional. It is not influenced by race, or religion, or gender. The rule of Love, then, is that we also must love without bias. This is in fact the Golden Rule: to love another as oneself. Is this not the kind of thinking that would make the world a better place? Is this not what the world needs more of? Love is not just a feeling; it is, in fact, a law. When we follow this law of Love then we bring harmony into our lives.

Through Christian Science, I have also come to know God as Truth and infinite Mind. I have learned to take

each of these descriptors and to live them – to be honest because I am the reflection of Truth; to be thoughtful and act intelligently because I am the reflection of Mind. When these spiritual qualities become my core values, then this spiritual discernment enables me to make better decisions when choosing friends and a life partner, or employment, and even the politicians I vote for. These are just some of the reasons I love being a student of

Christian Science.

To find out more about how members of the Canberra Christian Science community use the teachings of Christian Science to bring harmony to their lives, log onto christiansciencecanberra.com or visit us on the corner of Macquarie and Bligh Streets in Barton. TROY THOMPSON, MATTHEW HERBERT & LYN FAIRWEATHER

What are the keys to a successful real estate agency?

I think you have to have passion if you want to be successful at anything You have to care about the people you are working for and the people who are working in your team. You also have to be innovative, be well trained, understand your market and provide great leadership to help guide your team to being great at what they do. Hard work - you have to be willing to work hard, nothing great comes without it. Troy

Tell us about the real estate industry in Canberra.

Canberra is a fantastic market for property. It has steady positive trends from the strong public sector and continual infrastructure growth making for a less reactive market unlike the major capital cities. It also has so many great property opportunities from those wanting to buy their first home, purchase an investment or find well located rental properties all over the city. Troy

With a transient population, Canberra Real Estate offers good rental yields for investors, and low vacancy rates, and while we are back to the traditional Winter slow down with leasing, vacancy rates are still less than 2%. Lyn

What sets your agency apart from others?

We focus on building highly skilled property professionals. We want our people to be the best in the industry. We put more time and resources into training our team to achieve that. We also have a strong family culture in our team, we are real people who pride ourselves on being genuine, dedicated and working together as a team.

We have been a part of the Gungahlin community for 20 years and we take great pride in ensuring we take the same time and effort in helping someone find their first home to someone selling their family home. Nothing better than when you get to work with a client many times over many years. Troy

Our team are enthusiastic and take pride in what they do and genuinely care for their clients. We strive to offer a workplace that provides career development and a supportive workplace to ensure the longevity of the team, meaning our team get to know our clients and work with them to achieve the best results for their real estate needs. JANE MACKEN & SARAH MILLER

What are the keys to a successful real estate agency?

The key to a successful Real Estate Agency lies in the sum of its parts. An agency that brings particular focus toward client care, attention to detail and outstanding professionalism will always stand head and shoulder above the rest. At LJ Hooker Woden/Weston we strive to have client needs at the forefront at everything that we do. The sum of all these factors is what has made the LJ Hooker brand what it is today, the largest and most trusted agency in Canberra & surrounds. Jane

Successful agencies are propped up by several key pillars. An in-depth industry knowledge, customer care, and communication are essential to creating a successful environment. You need to have a good understanding of current legislation, including new changes. This requires extensive and consistent training to ensure all our investment properties are compliant in accordance with the Act and owners up to date with any changes. Furthermore, honesty and transparency with your customers and clients is essential. You can’t build relationships without a foundation of trust. Communication is also paramount. At the end of the day, you’re handling hundreds of thousands (sometimes million) dollar investments, you need to ensure that these investments are well maintained, have quality tenants, low vacancy rates and can achieve the highest rent possible for the owners. Sarah

Tell us about the real estate industry in Canberra.

What are the keys to a successful real estate agency?

A successful real estate agency provides the type of client experience that leads to referral and repeat business. Service is our product, our saleable commodity, and our communication is the packaging it's offered in. Rather than offering the supermarket experience, where you collect your own goods off the shelf and leave with them in a brown paper bag, we strive to offer the premium, High Street experience where the packaging is just as exclusive as the product Andrew

Tell us about the real estate industry in Canberra.

The real estate industry in Canberra has been very auction centric for many years with the majority of agents understanding the benefits of the transparent process to both buyers and sellers. Through professional advice and explanation, the marketplace has embraced auctions as a method of sale.

Brand is everything, it is our name, a name to be proud to be associated with. A brand synonymous best practice, integrity, respect, and industry leaders. A vision of Sir Leslie Hooker from the very beginning, the iconic Red and Yellow colours and the LJ Hooker brand continues to lead the Real Estate industry today. EXPERTS in REAL ESTATE

Alisa LAWRENCE

DELIVERS ON HER PROMISE, THEN DOES MORE

With 18 years of real estate experience to her name, Alisa Lawrence is a highly valued sales agent at respected local agency, Michael Potter Real Estate. Alisa focuses her energy on achieving excellent results through quality service, commitment, enthusiasm – plus a healthy dash of humour. Her solid negotiation skills have resulted in outstanding sale prices and suburb records.

What made you want to become a real estate agent?

Quite simply because I thought I had the right blend of a love of all things real estate – a love of people, and a desire to do something that would help others and be rewarding to me.

Tell us how you got into the industry.

A friend of mine had been approached by a prominent Canberra real estate agent to get into the industry and I was fortunate enough to be o ered a job as well. I had been in the public service for about 15 years and let’s just say it had served its purpose. I was excited to move into a career that I knew I would love and that passion would drive me to do well.

What is the most rewarding part of working in real estate?

By far and away the most rewarding part is having helped someone attain their goal in what is likely their biggest financial decision at the time. A great outcome doesn’t happen by accident and to know that my skills and expertise, just by doing my ‘job’, has made a

di erence – that’s what it is all about.

Tell us about your job.

Well, if you think it is driving around in a nice car, standing at a door taking people’s names and numbers and the odd letterbox drop, you’d be mistaken. My job can involve all manner of project management, from tradie quotes, gardeners, cleaners and even styling advice. I see what needs doing and I see that it gets done. It involves psychology and hand holding, especially when it’s an emotionally charged sale like a deceased estate or divorce. It takes empathy, resilience, and an assurance you will do your best to achieve the best possible outcome. The end result is a culmination of many factors that make my job so interesting.

What do you love about your job?

I love doing something I know how to do. Sounds a bit simple maybe, but to be able to do something that you have spent years learning and building up your skills and knowledge in, it’s a really good feeling.

What has been your biggest highlight so far?

It is hard to name just one over the 18 years. Achieving record prices for my

vendors is always a thrill, but when I look at the big picture, it’s the people I have met along the way. The ones who choose to come back to me when it’s time to sell again – it is the biggest compliment and always humbles me. I have also made many friends from clients and love that these people are still in my life.

What are your goals moving forward?

To stay relevant, to stay real, stay in touch and stay grateful.

What advice would you give young people considering a career in real estate?

I would say that it is exciting but it is hard. Be prepared to listen, to learn and realise just what a great responsibility you have when advising people on their likely single biggest asset.

What does it take to be successful in the industry?

It takes a strong work ethic and a commitment to provide the highest level of client care and an ability to

adapt to evolving market trends. When we have been going through one of the most challenging markets in many years, it takes an experienced agent to negotiate and navigate a successful outcome for their clients. Ultimately, do what you say you are going to do, then do a bit more.

What are your core values?

I have a simple philosophy – work hard and achieve excellent results through quality service, attention to detail, commitment and honesty. Michael Potter Real Estate is a boutique agency that o ers clients an interaction that is personal, open and honest. We provide superior counsel through leadership, knowledge, negotiation techniques and ultimately creating positive outcomes for all.

How can people get in touch?

My phone is pretty much glued to my hand so I can be contacted on 0404 066 119 or email alawrence@mpotter.com.au

Michael Potter Real Estate agent Alisa Lawrence appreciates the great responsibility an agent has when advising people on what is most likely their single biggest asset.

While the recent golden era of property prices saw new ‘pop-up’ agencies come to life, the Blackshaw story holds strength, longevity, and reputation beyond 35 years with its first sale in 1988.

What are the keys to a successful real estate agency?

Andrew Chamberlain joined the original Peter Blackshaw team back in 1990 and quickly established himself as one of the most capable and professional property sales agents in Australia.

Now at the helm as Managing Director of Blackshaw Real Estate, Andrew continues to maintain the momentum of success for the privately owned company, steering the ship for this team of 100 professionals, across eight di erent o ces with a leadership team of highly respected and recognised Principals.

A concrete reputation and arguably ranked in the top position in market share was never about being big, but taking each step in the right direction, says Andrew.

“It’s always been about delivering real estate at its most professional level across everything we do. Blackshaw stands for quality, and the respect we have for our clients, for the properties we sell, for the environment in which we work, and for the people who are part of our business,” he says.

Pat Jameson, Principal at Blackshaw Coastal, adds “providing sellers and buyers with good information is crucial to making informed decisions. Being honest and transparent builds great foundations for long-term relationships.”

Pat is a familiar and well-known face to the South Coast community. A highly respected leader in real estate in the Batemans Bay area, Pat joined the Blackshaw family from a national brand three years ago, bringing with her detailed market knowledge and a prominent reputation for always going above and beyond for her clients.

What are your agency’s goals?

“We only benefit when our clients benefit. We are here to help people and exceed their expectations,” says Michael Braddon, Principal, Blackshaw Gungahlin.

Beyond experience, perhaps the most refreshing thing about Blackshaw agents is their understanding in the role they play for their clients, in actioning what for most people is the largest financial transaction of their lives.

Michael Braddon opened Blackshaw Gungahlin in 2003. Canberra born and raised, he has forged a

reputation across the northern Canberra suburbs for his expertise and exceptional customer service, where you’ll often hear clients and sta say that they’re treated like family. And since 2015, the agency has raised over $197,000 for local children’s charity, Stella Bella Little Stars Foundation. His constant generosity – whether by giving back, o ering his time, or providing advice – Michael strives to do what’s best for his clients and their future.

“Our goals are to keep learning how to better service our clients, to excel with technology, and build teams of versatile proficient agents who are committed to working in alignment with our core values, Michael says.

“Many of our agents here have decades of experience so individually, they’ve seen the market cycle many times. There’s no substitute for this experience so we invest greatly in training, mentorship programs, and developing the skills of our high achieving younger agents,” Andrew says.

“In the market we’ve just had there were homes selling $400,000 to $600,000 above the reserve price, and you can’t put a foot wrong in that process when there is that amount of money at stake.”

What have been your agency’s greatest highlights over the years?

As Blackshaw celebrates 35 years of service in 2023, they’ve recently reflected on some pivotal milestones. Along with dozens of local and national real estate awards and accolades,

EXPERTS in REAL ESTATE

they’ve made history – with the sale of the first one-million-dollar home in Canberra in 1988, and first two-million-dollar home in 2001.

“We’ve been part of the fibres of this capital community and we’ve helped it grow; from the expanding capital hills to the lively coastal shores. Our growth demonstrates the development and expansion of our communities. Each step of the way has been tremendously rewarding,” Andrew says.

Since 2010, Alex AhKey has led her passionate and dedicated Blackshaw Queanbeyan & Jerrabomberra team to success by o ering a guaranteed 24-hour communication service for clients that is unique within our industry. Alex’s laser focus on providing the best client experience across both property management and sales has resulted in many prestigious awards both locally and nationally, including 2023 REIA National Small Residential Agency of the Year, 2022 REIACT Small Residential Agency of the Year, and induction into the REIACT Hall of Fame in 2012.

“The best thing about working in real estate is helping and making people happy ... Getting a great result for a client. It’s a rush every time,” Alex says.

What are your agency’s core values?

“Our values guide everything we do and ensure we’re working in the best interests of our clients and the community. Authenticity and honesty underpin the relationships and trust we build with our clients,” says Matt Sebbens, Principal, Blackshaw Belconnen.

Matt joined the Blackshaw family in 2014 and opened the Blackshaw Belconnen o ce, in Florey, in 2018. As a high-performance leader for the Australian Institute of Sport before migrating his skills into real estate, Matt is a values-driven leader, who unites individuals through purpose, with an unwavering commitment to excel and change the identity of real estate in the market.

“We are passionate about delivering powerful property experiences for our clients. Influenced by our traditions, with a strong focus on the future. We strive to achieve excellence for our industry,” Matt says.

What sets your agency apart?

Blackshaw is a known leader symbolising community, mastery, and integrity, with significantly more suburb records than any other agency across all service areas. They employ the largest concentration of high performing agents and is 100 per cent locally owned and operated.

“People tend to gravitate toward the businesses that have been through previous cycles when putting their home on the market or looking to choose a property manager during these times. There’s confidence in dealing with a brand that has been at the forefront of industry consistently for over three and a half decades and rightly so,” Andrew says.

Blackshaw Weston Creek and Molonglo Principal, Sean Rogers, has spent much of his life in the Weston Creek region, heavily involved in community and sports. His o ce opened in 2021 and his team of local

ambassadors have quickly developed a reputation for backing local sports and volunteering at local philanthropic events.

What can clients expect from your agency?

Andrew upholds a strong philosophy to his work that pushes him and his teams to consistently perform at their best.

“Selling your client’s home is a great responsibility, and I think that can be lost on people. It’s a big asset and most people transact properties very infrequently. The job done right can mean the di erence for some people of $100,000 or $200,000.”

Being an expert in real estate means having extensive knowledge, experience, and understanding of various aspects of the real estate industry. It involves a deep understanding of market trends, property valuation, financing options, legal regulations, property management, and negotiation skills. An experienced agent stays updated on current market conditions and uses their expertise to make informed decisions and recommendations regarding buying, selling, investing, or managing real estate properties.

EXPERTS in REAL ESTATE &Homegrown property portal with a focus on results, value great beer zango

Zango is Canberra’s largest locally owned and operated property portal, invested in, built and backed by Canberra’s biggest real estate brands. Zango’s network of real estate specialists cover Canberra and the surrounding areas from top to bottom and no one knows our own backyard like Zango.

Zango’s industry-owned model enables an unrivalled perspective and insight on Canberra’s real estate scene. The most trusted real estate brands with decades of industry knowledge and experience working together to provide your single source of expert opinion to give buyers and sellers confidence and the complete picture when it comes to their most significant asset. Plus, it’s all at a price point that delivers exceptional value.

Tell us about the people behind Zango.

The “people” behind Zango are the local real estate industry –large, small, established or boutique agency brands all united right across the region. Our people represent thousands of years of combined industry, agency and agent experience focussed on results and better value.

One of these is Col McIntyre from McIntyre Property, who says Zango’s stakeholders are united in a common goal “to provide Canberra with a cost e ective, locally owned, easy to use real estate website”.

What was the inspiration for starting Zango?

It seems the common expectation is that “everything” should cost you more these days, even for services whose products haven’t necessarily changed over the years.

Canberrans invest significantly in their property journey and Zango wants to ensure that vendors get the absolute best return on that investment when it comes time to sell.

Zango proves it is possible to get great industry

knowledge and experience and get great results for great value. That it simply shouldn’t cost you the earth to sell your piece of land, and you can win the property game come auction day.

According to Mr McIntyre, “the biggest driver was to support Canberra and the local region with their own local website, keeping the profits within our community. Zango has also created competition within Canberra’s real estate website market, therefore there is no longer a monopoly in this space.”

Holly Komorowski, Principal of home.by holly agrees. “A desire to give industry and consumers choice,” she explains.

What services does Zango provide to Canberra?

Looking to sell or lease? Zango has the knowledge, experience and reach to get your best result.

Looking to buy or rent? Zango has Canberra covered to find your ideal place to belong.

Auction results and industry news to keep you fully informed on your asset or area of interest.

“Zango o ers everything just like any other portal in real estate at a cost which is reasonable to

vendors and landlords with such great value,” says Troy Thompson, Director, LJ Hooker Gungahlin.

What are your core values as a business?

Trust, knowledge, reputation, community, and success are just a few values that ensure we get the best outcomes for buyers and sellers.

For sellers, it is getting results. That Zango’s united industry-owned focus provides an incredible advantage. This, combined with decades of personal experience and industry knowledge, comes with the reliability and trust vendors need to get the result they want.

For buyers and renters, it’s about connecting people with their ideal place to belong in Canberra and its surrounding areas. No one knows our own backyard like Zango’s network of agencies and agents.

“We’re a locally owned portal that supports locally owned businesses, communities and sporting teams,” Mr Thompson says.

Why is Canberra important to Zango?

The real estate industry is a significant factor in Canberra’s prosperity. A healthy real estate industry is a healthy Canberra: employment and thousands of jobs; supporting contractors and third parties (photographers, videographers, stylists, media outlets); sponsorships, community and clubs support.

Zango is “locally owned, locally operated and supports our local economy and keeping business within Canberra”, says Ms Komorowski. United, we can positively impact the street, suburb, community in which we choose to live.

What are Zango’s goals?

The local real estate industry is invested in Zango in more ways than one to ensure that after three years, we’re continually driven by results and our goal to continue providing Canberrans with choice and a better value way of selling and searching real estate.

What has been your biggest highlight so far?

“Things are getting tough financially in households,” says Mr Thompson, “and having a portal that is great value like Zango can give the consumer confidence and will deliver.”

For Ms Komorwski, it’s about results. The agency recently achieved a record sale in Giralang for a property that attracted 40 buyer groups through the first open home. It sold prior to auction in the first week, smashing the previous suburb record by $500,000.

The results speak for Mr McIntyre, too. “Collectively, as an o ce we have successfully sold well over 600 properties using only Zango for the local marketplace” he says.

What does the next 12 months look like?

With current market conditions, now more than ever you need an experienced hand to provide real and relevant guidance and advice.

Someone you can build a trusted partnership with to see you along your successful selling or searching real estate journey.

“With Zango now having proved itself as a significant player in the Canberra real estate market, I can honestly recommend Zango to our vendors and landlords knowing the buyers/ tenants are across all three real estate websites,” Mr McIntyre says.

“So, I suggest speaking with an agent who gives you every advertising option before selling or leasing your home.”

CANBERRA’S coastal connection

Based on the beautiful NSW South Coast, Principal of Elders Batemans Bay, Rebecca Shepheard, believes her agency is “Canberra’s coastal connection”.

Tell us how you got into the industry.

I had been working in banking, noticed a new agency open in our local area and applied for a receptionist position. The rest is history. I loved that each day was di erent. With so many aspects to the real estate world, no day was the same.

What do you love about your job?

What’s not to love! We get to meet so many people from di erent walks of life, each with their own requirements. We also get invited into some amazing homes. As principal of my own agency, my job is varied –whether it be nurturing a great culture for my team to thrive but still being hands-on with selling and managing property.

What is the most rewarding part of working in real estate?

Being able to assist people, whether it be selling their biggest asset to buying. It’s all about the connection. Seeing the joy in someone securing their home or selling to be able to enjoy their next adventure is so rewarding.

What has been your biggest highlight?

One I will always remember is my first million-dollar sale of a property that was very close to my heart, where as a child I spent school holidays camping and enjoying the national parks around; to have the opportunity to then sell the property and to impart the many stories of growing up and enjoying the area.

What advice would you give young people considering a career in real estate?

It is one of the most rewarding careers. It is not easy, but if you put in the hard work and enjoy what you do, it won’t feel like a job. It will be your lifestyle.

What does it take to be successful in the industry?

Being able to talk to people, being open to new ideas, being consistent in what you deliver, being genuine and transparent.

Buying property is one of the biggest investments you’ll ever make in life. Unfortunately, there are a lot of options out there, a lot of competition and the process can be overwhelming, quickly spiralling into what we call “buyer’s fatigue”. It happens to everyone, and it can lead to frustration and poor decisions that you may regret.

That’s why it’s a smart decision to invest in a Buyers Agent to guide you. Without a Buyers Agent by your side, you’re leaving yourself at a disadvantage.

Dining review: Lakeside dining domes at Water's Edge

What secret is known to both Canberra’s upper crust diners and the joggers of Lake Burley Gri n? The answer is one of the Capital’s most exclusive gourmet experiences – a fine dining degustation in a cosy dining dome by the edge of Lake Burley Gri n.

Diplomats, politicians, celebrities, corporates, and travel bloggers alike have enjoyed dinner under the stars at Water’s Edge.

Last week, several of the Canberra Weekly team were fortunate enough to join that list, courtesy of Executive Chef Avtar Singh.

Last year, the domes were available for just eight weeks. However, due to high demand, they are set to become a permanent feature of the recently renovated restaurant.

Each dome comes with a dedicated waiter, with the smaller ones accommodating a romantic dinner for two, while the larger domes can seat a corporate party of up to 14.

As our waiter, Rashim, welcomed us into our dome, the sun had just set over Canberra, treating us to a backdrop of purple skies.

My dining partners and I thoroughly enjoyed the

three-course dinner menu ($95pp), which comes with an additional wine pairing ($45).

From start to finish, the degustation revolved around classic winter flavours, elevated.

I indulged in the pan-seared scallops appetiser, served in a sinfully rich wild mushroom sauce, with flavourful bursts of pancetta and rhubarb. It was paired with a beautiful Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand, which perfectly balanced the intensity of flavours.

The Hawkesbury duck breast, with fermented black garlic, pickled turnip, semi dried cranberry, and co ee jus, was cooked to perfection – a more than worthy main course for an altogether spectacular meal.

While Water’s Edge has seen a departure from strictly French European cuisine in the past couple of years, it maintains the core French philosophy of celebrating rich flavours, derived from premium ingredients.

Branching out: Chef Singh creates his own cuisine In today’s era, when fusion is all the rage and almost any type of food can be ordered from your phone, cultivating a culinary identity as a chef becomes

increasingly important.

Chef Singh has run the kitchen at Water’s Edge for the past five years. However, the last two years has revealed his signature flair, which champions Indian spices and Australian produce.

His culinary style is truly authentic to his roots. Born in India, where he worked as a farmer, Chef Singh cut his teeth in Australia, beginning his culinary career in Sydney in 2009.

To this day, he grows his own organic garnishes for several dishes on the menu.

“I believe in doing things with heart and soul, which motivated me to change my style,” he said.

“I really want to o er something di erent to Canberra diners.”

This switch in culinary direction has seen great success thus far, with Water’s Edge winning the regional Reader’s Choice Award in the 2023 Australian Good Food Guide.

Music and rivalry for the history books in Amadeus at Rep Theatre

Not letting historical accuracy get in the way of a good story, Canberra Rep Theatre’s newest production tells a tale of jealousy, manipulation, and genius. See a rivalry for the ages in Amadeus at REP Theatre from 28 July to 12 August.

One of the greatest composers of all time, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart has been remembered for his musical genius. By the time of his death at just 35, he had written over 600 works. Prolific, young and undoubtedly talented, it is easy to understand why other composers of the time might have felt threatened by him.

Antonio Salieri, an important player in Italian classical opera, wrote his own works and taught students such as Ludwig van Beethoven. Salieri is the main character of Peter Shaffer’s play, Amadeus, inspired by an opera, that was inspired by a short play which was inspired by the rumour that, in a rage of jealousy, Salieri poisoned Mozart. On stage, Amadeus is his

confession.

“He is an old man when we start and then he takes us back in time and tells us the story of when he met Mozart. He instantly disliked Mozart because Mozart was everything he wanted to be,” says Cate Clelland, director and designer.

An exploration of the human psyche, Ms Clelland says the play shows what one could do if they have been all-consumed by jealousy and burning ambition. Wanting to take Mozart down, Salieri manipulates and lies, trying to change public perception of the famed composer.

“Salieri can’t understand why God would choose such a terrible person to be his musical voice. He wants to celebrate and praise God through music. He’s okay at it, he does quite well but he knows he’s not the best,” she says.

In moments of self-realisation, Salieri struggles with his own sense of wickedness and hatred for another man. While there is no firm indication that Mozart was as annoying as Salieri

believes in the play, there are hints that he might not be the most likable person, such as his letters to family.

“We can see what sort of person he was, and he was probably very arrogant,” Ms Clelland says. “In the play, that comes across, but we also do see him as a bit of a victim of his own personality and the fictitious version of Salieri.”

TIME OUT

Covering Canberra’s theatre scene from A to Z

With hopes of enriching the Canberra scene with original and innovative productions, the budding A-Z Theatre is receiving professional development support through a year-long residency at The Street Theatre.

While the company may be new, co-founders Anna Johnstone and Cathy Petőcz have been active members of the theatre scene locally, nationally and abroad for years. First meeting when they were both involved in Canberra Youth Theatre, the pair have followed each other’s careers as they have progressed.

Their focus for the productions is theatre for young people, though they won’t be ruling out adult cast members in their productions. They are still ironing out all the finer details but expect that casting will be production dependent, as in their work in progress, Mud

Featuring two adult actors, the show is for the youngest of theatregoers, around preschool age, and explores the concepts of difference, friendship and the negotiation of relationships. While the work is still in development, director, leading artist and educator

Anna explains it’s the story of conflicting personalities.

“It’s the story of ‘clean’ who lives in their own special world, all alone, quite happy, and then ‘mud’ lands in their life and mud has a jungle inside them… I guess that’s a metaphor for dealing with difference; how do you deal with somebody’s jungle?” says Anna.

Reflecting on how the pandemic has affected young people, their agency, and their level of comfort in social situations, the duo wanted to explore the concept of how to be a friend. Their second development relationship – humanity’s connection to the world around us.

“A play for teenagers called The Anthropocene Must End, it’s looking at basically post-anthropocentric thinking for teenagers; looking to nature to take inspiration of how we can reorganise ourselves as humans to live better in and with nature,” says Cathy, the lead artist behind the project.

Diversity, not competition, is what the pair want to bring to the theatre scene in Canberra. They recently brought The People’s House to life at the Museum of

“Our work is quite experimental. Often when we develop something, there is a set of almost scientific experimental questions that we sort of bring into the space to test,” says Cathy.

Book talk

This week, Jeff Popple reviews three books about old crimes and current dangers. More of Jeff’s reviews can be found on his blog: murdermayhemandlongdogs.com

Lowbridge by Lucy Campbell

Ultimo, $34.99

Canberra writer Lucy Campbell makes a strong entry into the realm of Australian crime fiction with her debut Lowbridge. Set in the fictional, small country town of Lowbridge, the eponymous novel is a well-crafted, slow burn of a mystery that revolves around the disappearance of a 17-year-old girl in 1987. Thirty years later, newcomer to Lowbridge, Katherine Ashworth, is trying to recover from her own personal drama and becomes obsessed with the events surrounding the disappearance. Shifting smoothly between 1987 and 2018, Lowbridge is an engaging crime novel that does a good job of recreating the divisions and tensions in semi-rural Australia.

Traced by Catherine Jinks

Text, $32.99

Veteran author Catherine Jinks also makes good use of recent events in Traced. Set during the COVID pandemic, it opens with Jane Macdonald, a contact tracer for a western Sydney hospital, calling a young woman to advise that she has been identified as a close contact and must isolate. The woman becomes hysterical, claiming her fiancé will be extremely angry and that she fears for her safety. Jane soon comes to realise that the fiancé is the same man that she and her daughter have been hiding from for the past six years. A powerful examination of domestic abuse and control.

Zero Days by Ruth Ware

Simon & Schuster, $32.99

Best known for her intricate British whodunits, Ruth Ware heads down a different path with Zero Days, which is a classic chase thriller. Hired by companies to break into buildings and test security systems, Jack and her husband Gabe are the best penetration specialists in the business. But after a routine assignment goes wrong, Jack arrives home late to find Gabe murdered. She is devastated, but it soon becomes clear that the police have only one suspect in mind – her. In order to clear her name, and to find her husband’s killer, Jack goes on the run. Fast paced, and highly addictive reading.

Not sure what to do? Use your BRAIN!

When it comes to healthcare, we are lucky to have a wealth of information and options at our fingertips. If you prefer to be an active participant in your health, one of the best ways is to ask your healthcare practitioners for more information.

It’s probably fair to say that in past generations, the norm was to do what our doctor told us to do without asking questions. Nowadays, at the very least, patients are encouraged to be make informed choices. Even better is to work collaboratively with your health care provider. They will be able to provide expertise and knowledge, but ultimately, you are encouraged to take responsibility for your wellbeing.

When it comes to making decisions about health choices, one model that works well is B.R.A.I.N. Which stands for considering the Benefits, Risks and Alternatives, as well as what your Intuition is telling you and the consequences of doing Nothing.

These five questions help to better inform

your decision making and become more relevant when considering a particular medical intervention, such as taking a new medication or a contemplating a surgical procedure.

Benefits vs Risk

Just about any health choice has both benefits and risks. Asking your health care provider to explain risks versus benefits is the starting point for informed consent. It can be as simple as knowing the side effects of a medication so you can be aware of what to look out for.

Alternatives

If you decide that the risk of an intervention outweighs the benefits, then you would likely want to explore the alternatives. The rise of alternative medicine is testament to the fact that we love to have options. Sometimes, the more people you ask, the more confusing it can be and, ultimately, we have to make a judgment call.

Intuition

Have you ever got a feeling that despite the logic of what you’re hearing, something just doesn’t feel right? Trust your instincts, ask more questions, seek a second opinion, and where possible, give yourself more time. Health professionals, despite their years of training and best of intentions, are fallible and can make mistakes.

Doing nothing

What happens if you do nothing and wait it out? It reminds me of a cautionary tale contained in a study that showed a group of patients that were on the wait list for back pain surgery had better outcomes compared to those who actually had the surgery. Sometimes waiting or choosing to not do anything at all is a valid option.

Editor’s note: This wellbeing column provides information that is general in nature. Please always refer to your preferred health professional for advice suited to your personal healthcare requirements.
