I love the beauty and contrasts of Canberra’s four seasons. That said, I find a mid-winter seaside getaway to a balmy climate is a restorative balm for my body, mind and spirit.
Lucky me was among a select group of journalists and travel writers invited on a getaway (aka media famil) to experience Fiji Airways’ first direct flight from Canberra to Nadi which took o last Friday - CBR’s first international service since BC (Before Covid).
Canberra Airport’s Stephen Byron is confident it heralds the beginning of more international routes to and from our fair city. As we prepared to board our four-hour direct flight to Nadi, Stephen promised we wouldn’t be waking to minus-five tomorrow. Promise fulfilled. It was 19oC - chilly by Fijian standards - rising to a sunny top of around 26-28.
Fiji is where happiness lives. The Fijian people are genuinely warm and welcoming. “Bula!” they smile. We stayed at Sofitel Fiji Resort for three idyllic days, punctuated with day trips to glorious Tivua Private Island and Six Senses Fiji luxury resort. Bliss.
I returned, too soon, on Fiji Airways’ first Tuesday flight to CBR; this new twice-weekly service (Tuesday and Friday) making a short break to Fiji feasible; a longer break even more desirable.
This past week I’m grateful for my balmy Fiji getaway and for all those who made it possible and memorable. Vinaka. Take care,

17-year-old chef proves age is no barrier to success
17-year-old Deb Ridley may have missed her high school graduation but has become an awardwinning chef, snagging the gold at the ACT Nestlé Golden Chef’s Hat Awards last month.
The young commis chef at OndineEuropean Brasserie stood out from the rest, winning regionals on her first try.
How she first fell in love with food is a modern love story, and it started with Year 10 work experience.
“Three years ago, I was just scrolling on Instagram, and it was all these cake videos. I was like, I want to do that,” says Deb.
She applied to work at Rosie Cakes in Kaleen. “I got to decorate cakes for a week, and I realised that I really enjoyed it.” It was her first taste of what would become her specialty – dessert.
Ondine, co-owned and run by four-time Golden Chefs regional winner Keaton McDonnell, may seem like an unusual pick for a first job to some, but even at her tender age, Deb knew what she wanted.
“I knew I didn’t want to start off at McDonald’s or KFC,” she says. “I was looking online specifically for European restaurants. “I was used to Mexican food, so I wanted to do something different, something I hadn’t had any experience in.”
Keaton decided to bring a then-15year-old Deb in for an interview with her mum. He jokes that it was the “sass” that inspired him to welcome her aboard.
“But genuinely, I started when I was 15 as well,” says Keaton. “Anybody who is that
passionate and interested, and blessed enough to find something that they may really love, is someone who is worth giving a go.”
Deb jumped straight into the kitchen, and into an apprenticeship for Commercial Catering Cert III, learning almost everything on the job.
Keaton, who won his first regional Golden Chefs at 18, encouraged her to enter her first regional.
“I just went to learn and to see who I might be competing with next year – And then I won. I was shocked. Mum started crying.”
Like any great chef, Deb stays cool under pressure, which helped her in her choice to stray from the beaten path leaving school after Year 10. “Nearly everyone at my school said I was doing the wrong thing when I left,” she says.
“I didn’t really have anyone other than my parents and my siblings who thought that I was doing the right thing.
“They all thought that I was just dropping out of school because I was bad at school … But I knew that I wanted to be a chef.”
While Deb says the number one lesson that she’s learnt from Keaton is the classic clean as you go (“which I’m still working on!”), Keaton says that he has learnt a thing or two from his young protégée.
“I’ve been a head chef for 13 years. Seeing someone start, not only at 15, but as a female at that age, is quite different.
“I’ve definitely grown as a head chef and a mentor,” says Keaton. “Kitchens as a place to work have vastly changed, and it’s 100 per cent for the better.”
“Everyone’s really supportive,” says Deb. “It’s not as stressful as I thought it would be. I thought it was going to be very demanding, but Keaton’s a very good teacher. I learn something new basically every day.”
“When I was an apprentice, we started off with 120 students,” says Keaton. “Three years after that, there was four of us left cooking, partially because of the aggressiveness in the kitchen, but also just because you have to sacrifice a lot of weekends and late nights.”
He laughs that being a chef means never having a Valentine’s Day on Valentine’s Day.
When it comes to balancing a culinary career, and the commitments that come with being a teen, Deb jokes that it “helps that I don’t have a social life.
“My body’s adjusted now to starting later in the day and ending later at night.”
Next on the chopping block for Deb is facing the other 11 top chefs from across Australia and New Zealand, battling it out at Fine Food Australia in Sydney this September.
One winner will be crowned Golden Chef of the Year, and will travel with the Australian Culinary Olympics Junior Team to the IKA Culinary Olympics in Stuttgart, Germany.
Much like her mentor, who worked as a chef internationally several times before returning to Canberra, Deb wants to see the world. “I want to discover different places and different foods.”
Luckily, Keaton says, “a great thing about the industry is that there’s always jobs and opportunities overseas.”

Ghosts, Gough and other famous Telopeans
Telopea Park School is about to celebrate its 100th year – minus the nine days when it was a temporary hospital in 1927 – and there are some ghost stories and Gough stories to tell.
Few people would know that the school was a hospital for nine days during the opening of Old Parliament House and, sadly, was put to use when an ill-fated flying formation saw a plane nose-dive into the ground.
Flying officer Francis Ewen was rushed to Telopea Park School and although he died later at Acton, his ghost is said to frequent a classroom at the school, where students say a door swings open and a strange smell is in the air.
Former head of history and English, Esther Davies, says the children’s story was that the pilot died in what was room 22, “my room”.
“The children would say his ghost
is there and you can tell because the door swings open and there’s this strange smell,” Esther says. “The door swings open because there’s a cross draft from the windows, the strange smell, I say that’s your sneakers.”
Esther knows the school well, having worked at the school for 12 years, 36 years ago, and is archivist of the school’s historic records, which include 55 illustrious “Telopeans”.
None more famous than the late former Prime Minister, Gough Whitlam, who attended the school’s 75th anniversary and when Esther told her what subject she taught, he replied, “I like history, after all, I made so much of it”.
“People often ask why did Whitlam go for four years to Telopea and then Boys Grammar,” Esther says. “His exact words to me were, ‘I was sent down, my dear, the headmaster thought I was
impertinent. The teachers couldn’t manage me’. People who knew him told me he could be very willful when he was young.”
So fond was Whitlam of his time at Telopea that in his final years, he kept a photo of himself as a student
at Telopea by his bedside at a nursing home.
“I got a signed copy of [Whitlam’s biography] His Time,” Esther says, “the author wrote “Telopea Park School, the making of a man”, and he wrote: ‘I concur’.

Op-shoppers rejoice! New Vinnies opening in Braddon
Yes, it’s true – Vinnies Canberra/Goulburn will open its first inner-city store in the beating heart of Braddon on Lonsdale Street in late September.
Vinnies Braddon will be the charity’s 28th store to operate in the ACT region. It will be open seven days a week, and will have late night hours on Thursday, Friday and Saturday in line with the popular Vinnies Dickson store.
The flagship shop plans to be a “thrifter’s paradise, tapping into local demand for vintage fashion, particularly among Millennials and Gen Z”.
“There will be more colour in the shop than a gigantic box of skittles and with bargains just as sweet,” said Isla Smith, Retail Development Manager at Vinnies Canberra/Goulburn.
“Our plans include more than a hundred racks bursting with every thrifter’s dreams including men’s and women’s clothing, garments for children and babies, Manchester, bedding, home décor and more.
“And then there’s what we can fit on the gazillion wall shelves we have planned – bric-abrac, curios, collectables, antiques, ornaments,
gizmos, thingamabobs, knick-knacks – you get the drift.”
Temporary signage is currently posted at 3 Lonsdale Street, near Tipsy Bull and the Braddon 7-Eleven.
Designed in-house from scratch, the fit out of the 600sqm floorplan will be themed around a “sustainable future” and decorated with reclaimed roof sheeting and bespoke fittings to match the hip culture of the local surrounds.
Canberra Weekly spoke with Director of Commercial Operations, Lindsay Rae to answer the burning question that is sure to be on everybody’s lips. With the purported focus on “vintage,” combined with inner-city inflation, will the new Braddon store come with equally flashy price tags?
“We will have a range of prices in the shop –everything from children’s wear at $1 to high-end designer brands and vintage items,” said Mr Rae.
“What we can guarantee is Vinnies Braddon will keep to the level of pricing as all of our shops. We try our best and always research.”
According to Mr Rae, plans to open an innercity store have been in the making for half a decade. “We have wanted a presence in the inner city for quite some time. There is a great need for support services in the area,” he said.
“We have tried for the past five years to find a suitable location for a shop to help fund those services.”
The money raised through Vinnies op shops directly funds their community programs and services, such as the Night Patrol Van.
With doors set to open in a few months, Mr Rae said several things will set Vinnies Braddon apart from other stores, including recycling stations for old mobile phones and spectacles.
“We will have a nook for mums, dads, and their little ones. We’re calling it Cutie-Pie Corner,” he said. “There will be some really creative and fun design collaboration with local artists … but we have to save some of the surprises for our big reveal day.” Full story online.

Who let the story dogs out?
It was dog exams in early July, where seven Canberra mutts were tested by the Story Dogs Organisation, a not-for-profit group that provides individualised reading sessions for young readers who lack confidence.
The pass rate wasn’t great – four dogs passed out of the seven enrolments – because it takes a certain type of dog to turn reluctant readers into booklovers.
For the uninitiated, story dogs don’t actually read stories to the children (they wait for the movie to come out) but rather they are the impetus for the child to want to read to them.
Tuggeranong Library is about to receive its first story dog this term thanks to the latest dog recruitment.
Volunteer Jennipher Dunstan, who takes her story dog, Taco (a Bull Arab breed), to Franklin Primary School each week, says the aim is to create life-long readers.
When we caught up with Jennipher, she was taking Taco and a foster dog for a walk. “It’s targeted at kids who can read but aren’t
confident and just don’t enjoy reading,” she says. “We make it all about the dog, saying ‘let’s read a story to Taco’, or ‘Taco wants to find out what happens in this story’.”
According to St Thomas Aquinas in Melba, story dogs work. A young boy on the program, who was a reluctant school attendee and not engaged in schoolwork, began attending school regularly and participated more following a few weeks with story dogs.
During school terms, a story dog visits a school for two hours at a time and each nominated child gets 20 minutes of one-on-one with the story dog and their handler.
There are 20 teams of story dogs in Canberra (ranging from border collies to greyhounds to labradoodles) who visit St Joseph’s, St Monica’s, St Thomas Aquinas, Franklin Primary, Majura Primary, Narrabundah Early Childhood Centre, and Farrer Primary. Participating ACT libraries include Gungahlin, Dickson and, as of term three, Tuggeranong.
“I’ve been doing it a couple of years,” Jennipher says. “I love reading and I really like the fact that we’re helping kids to enjoy reading. I think Taco gets something out of it, too – the kids love him. It’s the highlight of my week.”

OzHarvest delivers an outstanding 10 million meals in Canberra
With a mission of no food going to waste, OzHarvest has been diligently working in the Canberra community for the last 15 years, collecting and distributing food that otherwise would have gone to landfill. They recently celebrated an enormous milestone, delivering their 10 millionth meal.
The loaded food truck rolled into the car park outside the Helping Hand Food Pantry and St Paul’s Parish Centre in Spence. OzHarvest team members greeted those from the Pantry, and they got to work moving crates of fruit, vegetables, perishables and pantry staples into the building.
“There’s plenty of food out there if it is distributed equally and we value food for what it truly is, it’s nourishment… The ultimate goal is no food goes to waste, everybody has a nourishing meal, and they know how to cook for themselves and have choices,” says Belinda Barnier, OzHarvest Canberra City manager.
The contribution to the food pantry at St Paul’s goes towards filling the fridges and pantries of hungry Northside families. Only open one day a week for just three hours, in that time they feed between 50 and 60 households, ranging from those living alone to families housing up to 10 people. The coordinator of the food pantry, Robyn Wall, is grateful for all the help they have received through the organisation.
“It’s an absolute privilege to be part of something so exciting. I can’t even get my head around how big 10 million meals actually are. You think about the average household - three meals a day, seven days a week and you do the multiplication, that is so many households that have been fed and supported,” says Ms Wall.
Reaching their limit on how much food they can deliver, OzHarvest is in desperate need of more funding to continue helping the Canberra community. While they have a number of fundraising efforts on the go, they are always

looking for more support and ideas.
“There’s more we can do; I’m seeking assistance from our local community on how we can improve what we’re doing,” says Ms Barnier.

Speedy Geese take flight at Parliament House
Every Monday at lunchtime, a flock of geese descends on the lawns of Parliament House –Speedy Geese, that is – a diverse group of athletes that includes world champion cross-country runner, 80-year-old Caroline Campbell.
Caroline and her fellow “geese” occasionally have cake and champers after their track workout, which can include sprints, relays or push-ups, and when I caught up with Caroline after training, the special occasion was: “it’s Monday”.
Her list of achievement includes 10 marathons (42.2 km each). The most recent one, Melbourne Marathon, was to celebrate her 80th birthday.
“That was my birthday present to myself,” Caroline says, “And the [Nike] shoes.”

“I could hear the Kiwi breathing behind me so I knew it was close.”
Caroline’s mantra? “Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee” by boxer Muhammad Ali (although Caroline prefers not to sting, just float pass her competitors).
For her 81st birthday, Caroline is heading to Sydney to do the City to Surf. Her running trainer, Speedy Geese leader, 75-year-old Geoff Moore, is incredibly proud of his brood.

WITH BILL STEFANIAK AM RFD FORMER ACT OPPOSITION LEADER
Education is the key to Indigenous literacy
Regardless of how the Voice referendum goes, there is a lot we can do to improve the lot for our Indigenous brothers and sisters now.
It is disgraceful that in 2023, and after spending more than $30 billion a year on God knows what, 40 to 70 per cent of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people over 15 have low or poor literacy.
Urgently improving on this intergenerational problem of low levels of literacy should be a priority for this and future Australian governments at both federal and state levels.
My youngest daughter, Lucy, attended a systemic Catholic school (St Scholastica’s) in Glebe as a boarder from 2007 to 2009. A number of Indigenous girls from remote communities were boarders at the school as part of a federal government program. The results were startling. Many went on to tertiary education, and a number went back to help in their communities as teachers / nurses / social workers.
Ngemba man Jack Beetson (I wonder if he’s related to the famous footballer Arthur Beetson?), Adjunct Professor at the Australian Centre for Agriculture and Law at the University of New
England, recently wrote in The Australian that despite widespread knowledge of the literacy problem and the potential benefits of closing the gap if it were tackled, there had been little political imperative and action to improve Indigenous literacy. The Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody had called for a mass literacy program, but this call fell on deaf ears.
Professor Beetson went on to say: “If the recommendations of the taskforce and commission had been enacted, the trickle-through effect on the younger generations should by now be revealing stunning results – improved education levels, job opportunities, lower Indigenous rates of incarceration, and numerous other social and economic benefits.”
Professor Beetson knows the hard way how beneficial education is. Born in Nyngan, NSW, he was the son of a drover father and a medical orderly mother. He picked cotton as a boy, and learnt how to read with the help of his sister-in-law.
He is a director of the Literacy for Life Foundation, an Aboriginal-led adult literacy charity,
and he says that internationally designed, low-cost, high-impact programs had cut illiteracy levels in communities in NSW, QLD, and the NT by up to 24 per cent. In Wilcannia, it dropped the illiteracy rate by 20 per cent; in Bourke, by 24 per cent. The program created jobs for Indigenous Australians and led to its graduates getting jobs. Maybe if this and similar programs were rolled out in all outback communities as part of a massive nationwide literacy campaign, we would very quickly see huge benefits flow into these communities.
It beggars belief that successful programs such as these have not been made mandatory in Australia.
Regardless of what happens to Albo’s Voice referendum, common sense initiatives like this are desperately needed. I’m sure Noel Pearson, my old mate Julian Leeser (voting “yes”), Jacinta Price and Warren Mundine (voting “no”) would be happy to push for an immediate nationwide priority initiative to improve Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander literacy.
Education is the key. Just ask Professor Beetson.

Sport for people with an intellectual disability
Special Olympics ACT is part of a global sporting community for people with an intellectual disability.
We provide weekly grassroots sporting, recreational, social and health activities in local communities. It’s an environment where people with an intellectual disability can develop physical fitness, build self-esteem, demonstrate courage, and make friends.
Special Olympics ACT runs programs in basketball, swimming, tennis, table tennis, snow sports, ten pin bowling and golf. Special Olympics ACT supports participation from ACT and the greater region covering Canberra, Goulburn, Yass and Queanbeyan.
Our competition pathways range from weekly club events, to regional, state and national games, culminating in the Special Olympics World Games.
The last Special Olympics World Games were held in Berlin in June this year. Special Olympics ACT was pleased that one of its basketball athletes, Rana Istambouli, was selected as a member of the
Australian Basketball Team. Rana is a dedicated and skilful basketball player. Everyone in the ACT was thrilled that the Australian Women’s Basketball team won the bronze medal in an exciting match with a two-point win that went into overtime. Congratulations Rana and to all the Team on such a great victory.
Special Olympics ACT is supported by a dedicated team of volunteers. Special Olympics programs would not exist without volunteers who have been giving their time and talent to bring sport to people with intellectual disability.
Ken Williamson, the Chair of Special Olympics in Canberra, said, “volunteers are the backbone of the movement and can be found in roles at all levels of the organisation. They are our coaches, trainers, officials, event organisers, fundraisers, administrators and community leaders. Some give their time to sport on a weekly basis, others participate at events when needed, and there are others who are on call to help out wherever needed.”
Special Olympics ACT is always happy to
welcome new athletes with an intellectual disability. And we are always happy, too, to welcome more volunteers to assist in whatever way you can.

SOLUTIONS
A change of circumstance may be just what you want both in your home life and at work but, if it points to upheaval, it’s important that you plan your next few weeks carefully. Avoid being resistant to change and avoid impulsiveness.
SAGITTARIUS NOV 23 – DEC 21
This is a good week to embrace change and be prepared to consider a quirky plan or project. A trip or venture could be promising, but will require you to think laterally. Avoid applying the brakes unless logistics dictate otherwise.
CAPRICORN DEC 22 – JAN 20
You may experience key developments this week that signal changes in your personal life or financially – or both. Be prepared to look innovatively at your various options. A project is likely to take off, but you must avoid arguments.
AQUARIUS JAN 21 – FEB 19
This week’s Aquarius supermoon signifies a new chapter in your personal life if you were born in January, and a fresh work or daily health routine if you were born in February. Be prepared to make changes at home that can enhance your security.
PISCES FEB 20 – MAR 20
Wednesday’s supermoon calls for a fresh approach to the people you interact with. A fresh social circle may appeal. Working Pisces may be drawn to a fresh daily routine and, if health has been a focus, this is an excellent week to make progress.
ARIES MAR 21 – APR 20
Wednesday’s supermoon will highlight your career, status and a fresh direction. It’s time to shine and to set your new ideas into gear in clever ways. As with anything new, there may be teething issues, but if you’re diligent you could gain the results you want.
TAURUS APR 21 – MAY 21
Developments will gather steam with a domestic or personal matter, and could be particularly beneficial, so be sure to put your practical ideas into motion. Wednesday’s supermoon will spotlight a venture you could learn from, so avoid impulsive decisions.
GEMINI MAY 22 – JUN 21
Be prepared to look at your circumstances in a new light. You’ll gain the incentive and motivation to drive a project forward, as you are passionate about seeing positive results that concern your shared duties, joint finances or a collaboration.
CANCER JUN 22 – JUL 22
Wednesday’s supermoon will fall in your partnership zone, suggesting you are ready to turn a corner in a key relationship, such as a work arrangement. You could build a strong financial base, but you must be wary of overspending too.

WITH TASTE EDITOR, ANJA DE ROZARIO
Nostalgic finger buns
Makes 12
4 cups (550g) bread flour
1/3 cup (75g) caster sugar
1/4 cup (60g) butter, softened
2 eggs, at room temperature
4 tsp (14g) yeast
Pinch of salt
150ml milk, at room temperature
150ml water
Vegetable oil spray
For the egg wash
1 egg
1 tsp milk
For the filling
1 serving berry jam
1 serving pastry cream or whipped cream
1/2 cup (70g) icing sugar
To start the dough, sift the flour into a large mixing bowl, then add the sugar, butter, eggs, yeast, salt, milk and water. Stir with a wooden spoon until a dough ball begins to form.
Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured work surface. Knead for 10 minutes, or until the dough has a smooth surface and springs back when it is poked. Place the dough in a lightly greased mixing bowl, then cover it with a damp tea towel. Leave the dough to double in size, which will take about 1 hour.
Roll the dough into a log about 30cm long, then cut it into twelve portions. (First divide the log into three even parts, then cut each of the thirds in half, and finish by cutting each of those six pieces in half again.) Roll them into balls. Roll one side of each ball to form a little finger at least 10cm long. Place the fingers on a lined baking tray. Either brush or spray them with oil, then cover them with a damp tea towel and leave them until they become plump and fluffy, about 40 minutes.
Whilst the dough is rising, preheat the oven to 235°C. In a bowl, whisk together your egg wash until there are no lumps of egg white remaining. When the dough has risen, lightly brush each finger with the egg wash, then place the tray in the oven for 10 to 15 minutes, or until the fingers are evenly golden and cooked through. Set them on a wire rack to cool.
Cut each finger bun horizontally, then fill it with your choice of jam or cream. Dust it lightly with icing sugar before serving.
Makes 8
1/2 cup (120g) butter, at room temperature
1/2 cup (110g) caster sugar
2 eggs, at room temperature
1/2 cup (120g) pureed cooked pumpkin
3 cups (375g) self-rising flour
For the whipped maple butter
2/3 cup (150g) butter
1/3 cup (80ml) maple syrup
Pinch of salt
For the scones, use a large mixing bowl and beat the butter and sugar with an electric mixer until light and pale. Add the eggs one at a time and beat until each egg is fully incorporated. Now stir in the pumpkin, then sift in the self-rising flour. Switch to a butterknife and mix the ingredients with it until the scone dough comes together. Turn out the dough onto a lightly floured work surface, then very lightly knead the dough for about two or three turns, or until it just comes together.
Roll the dough into an even thickness of about 5cm. To shape the scones, use a 5cm ring cutter. Ensure you dip the cutter into flour each time you shape a scone to keep the dough from sticking.
Position the scones on a baking tray so that they are just touching each other. Now put them into the oven for 15 minutes, or until they are golden.
Whilst the scones are baking, make the whipped maple butter. In a large mixing bowl, beat the butter with an electric mixer on a medium-high speed until it is light and fluffy. Add the maple syrup and salt and beat again on a medium-high speed until well combined.
Serve the whipped maple butter with the warm scones fresh out of the oven.

Jax Jay blends cultures, traditions and arts in Canberra
Moving to a new country and trying to find your place in a new city is a scary prospect. Fortunately for musician and artist Jax Jay, he had already established a connection through his music. Since 2019, the musician has been visiting the Canberra region.
“Every year my band comes here from India to play in a cultural event for the Indian community … Navaratri. It’s a very big festival for Indians, it goes nine days continuously. We play for our goddess that music, and the audience do the dancing steps,” he says.
Networking at the event, Jay made a connection with a businessman who offered him a position as an interior designer at his construction company. Starting the role while still living in India, the pandemic put a halt on the visa process but didn’t dampen Jay’s eagerness to come to Australia, making the move to Canberra early last year.
Playing a range of genres including Indian classical, contemporary Bollywood, Western classical, blues and jazz, Jay was on the road to making a successful career for himself before the move. Since arriving in Canberra, he has been sharing his talents with the local community, to much applause. Though his main fan base is back in India, Jay hopes to continue building on his success here.
“Here in Canberra, I’m gathering an audience in the Indian community … The purpose of our band is for all community, we don’t want to just stick with Indian band and Indian music, we want to explore every kind of genre and community.”
It was his father who initially sparked Jay’s love for music by his playing of the harmonium. Jay remembers listening to the music and wanting to try it for himself. At eight years old, he saw an opportunity to feed his curiosity
when his father was out of the house.
“I just grabbed the harmonium and started playing something and suddenly he came, and he says ‘Are you interested in playing music?’, I said ‘yes’ and he said ‘carry on’,” Jay smiles.

Oppenheimer (MA15+)
In 1926, at the University of Göttingen in Germany, young J. Robert Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy) earns his Ph.D. and eventually makes his way to the University of California, Berkley, to teach physics. Soon, Oppenheimer is approached by General Leslie Groves (Matt Damon) to help develop the atomic bomb to win WWII!
After writer and director Christopher Nolan’s attempt at getting audiences back into cinemas post-COVID with Tenet (2020), Nolan smashes through a sludge of comic book and legacy sequel intellectual properties with a celebration of the power of film. Nolan dips into his usual cast and crew to finally put a pin in his exploration of the almost supernatural, world-ending potential of technology gone rogue: a transportation device in The Prestige (2006), privacy breaching surveillance tech in The Dark Knight (2008), the power of a black hole in Interstellar (2014), and the apocalyptic potential of inversing the entire world in Tenet (2020).
Shot primarily from the view of its protagonist, the movie clearly presents Oppenheimer’s relationships, understanding and passion for
physics, and the guilt he ultimately wrestles with. Cillian Murphy dominates the frame over the movie’s indulgent, but pacey, run-time, which is assisted by Nolan’s penchant for hyper-cuts, dominating soundtrack and an incredible ensemble cast.
The movie plays its paradoxical, subjective character-study and objective political drama like a

WITH ASSISTANT PROFESSOR DR VIVIENNE LEWIS CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGIST AT UNIVERSITY OF CANBERRA
Five things to look out for when choosing a therapist
Deciding to seek help for a mental health issue, relationship or family issue can be a daunting experience. As a Clinical Psychologist, treating children, adolescents, and adults with mental health issues, I know how important it is to find the right person.
Just like finding a good hairdresser, it can take a bit of time. You need to find someone you trust, can open up to, and who gives you great evidence-based strategies to help with whatever the issue is.
Your first point of call should be to see your individual or family general practitioner (GP) for a Mental Health Care Plan. This involves a conversation with your GP about generally what the problem is (don’t worry, you don’t have to tell them in great detail), complete a short questionnaire about your mood, anxiety, and stress levels, and then they write a plan that enables you to claim ten Medicare rebated sessions per calendar year, for seeing a psychologist or clinical psychologist. This saves you a huge amount of money!
Your GP may be able to recommend a few people, but if not, here are some tips for finding someone who suits. All psychologists and clinical psychologists are registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (just like GPs) and most are listed on the Australian Psychological Society website with their areas of expertise.
1. Are they fully qualified? Sometimes people look under ‘counselling’ and not all ‘counsellors’ have the qualifications. You want to see someone who is registered and has formal qualifications (at least a four-year degree in psychology, preferably Masters level).
2. Look out for what the professional specialises in. Do they specialise in what you’re seeking help for?
3. Call or email them and ask any questions you have – remember you are the client/customer.
4. What’s their waiting list like? You don’t want to have to wait too long to see someone if the issue is serious/urgent.
5. Be prepared to see the person once and test them out. If they’re not right for you, organise to see someone who you might jell better with. Remember, your relationship with a psychologist will likely be long-term, at least ten sessions, so you need to choose someone who meets your needs. For more help, visit psychology.org.au/ find-a-psychologist.

Australia was revealed as a top five nation for work-life balance according to new research, outperforming the United Kingdom and Canada. The worldwide study, conducted by global employment experts Remote, reveals that Australia ranks fourth overall, with a score of 73.71 out of 100. This is partially attributed to Australia offering the highest minimum annual wage per hour of any nation. Meanwhile, neighbouring country New Zealand is the #1 country with the best life-work balance. Boasting a strong economy, New Zealand scored highly across several metrics, offering a generous statutory annual leave allowance (32 days), a high rate of sick pay (80 per cent), and a government-funded universal health care system.

It’s the last chance for Australians to ‘give a sock’ to vulnerable people doing it tough this winter by simply

For every post shared on Instagram in July, either via a user’s feed or story, retailer Underworks will donate a pair of socks or an essential clothing item to those in need. Research by Thread Together shows that more than 3.5 million people in Australia do not have access to essential clothing, which equates to around 1 in 8 adults and 1 in 6 children. Charities have called for more donations of socks and underwear, as socks in particular were among the least donated items Underworks has 20,000 pairs of socks ready to donate, along with underwear and thermals, which will be distributed through charity partners including Salvos, Foodbank Victoria, Lighthouse Foundation and Thread Together. “All you have to do is share an Underworks post on your Instagram feed or story, tag a friend, use #IGiveASock and tag @underworksaustralia,” said Underworks CEO Sam Todaro.

your
bathroom reno Steps to avoid a budget blowout
If you’re considering a bathroom renovation but afraid you won’t be able to stick to your budget, here are some simple steps to ensure that when your new bathroom is handed over, it doesn’t come with any nasty surprises.
Know what you’re working with
Before you even get to the quote stage, it’s critical to know everything you can about the space you’re planning to renovate. Does it have asbestos, water damage, double brick? These things will likely influence the baseline cost of your renovation and knowing this early will allow you to weigh up what luxuries are important to you and o set them by saving costs in other areas. To achieve the best possible outcome within the budget you have set, knowledge is your best friend.
Do your research and get inspired
You don’t know what you don’t know, so ask for advice from a trusted person or do your own independent research. It’s important to know what features you want in your bathroom that will add to the baseline costs, such as
underfloor heating, concealed lighting, a skylight over the shower, premium bath or vanity, tiles laid in a herringbone pattern. It’s important to have all of these features included in the quote so you can be realistic about what to add and what to leave out. This is the fun part so let your imagination run wild! Create Pinterest boards to gather inspiration and help you identify the style and features you love.
Plan and plan some more
Now that you’re feeling inspired, it’s time to take that inspiration and translate it to your bathroom. Are you going to keep the same layout or take this opportunity to change it? Stand in the space, imagine how it might look, and visualise your options. Then draw up a small-scale version on a sheet of paper.
Set a realistic budget
Do some research on what it costs to
renovate a bathroom and speak to people you know who have recently gone through a their own reno to get an idea of what they paid. It’s a good idea to build in a contingency (at least 10 per cent of the total amount) for any issues that can potentially arise, such as unexpected water damage.
Get a quote (finally!)
Now you get to test your budget. Be as detailed as possible about what you want to get the most accurate quote, and also be open to knowledge and expertise that your tradies can provide. If you’ve already researched fixtures and fittings, ask the plumber’s opinion on quality.
You can seek quotes from each trade individually if you plan on project managing your renovation yourself, or you could engage a full renovation service, like we provide at Action Plumbing. If you’re not undertaking structural work, you don’t necessarily need to engage a builder.
If the quote is way more than your budget, you have a few options –reconsider your budget, see if adjusting your plans brings the cost down, or even consider saving for another 12 months. Bathroom renovations are a once in a decade (or two) process, so they are worth doing properly!
Choose your tiles, fixtures and fittings
Once you’ve locked in your trades, it’s decision time for your tiles, fixtures and fittings – one area where you can make a huge impact on your budget. Chat to your plumber about where you can a ord to save and what items are worth paying for quality.
Open communication
Good communication is a two-way street – set the expectations early that any change to the plan or budget needs to be clearly communicated, and be empowered to ask questions so that you feel in control.
There should never be a shock when you receive your final invoice. If you have a good tradie, any variation of the cost would have been clearly communicated so if you adjust the plan, both of you are 100 per cent clear on what that decision means for the bottom line.
Bathroom renovations aren’t cheap or easy. Some costs in a bathroom renovation are within your control while others are fixed and unavoidable. To avoid a budget blowout, spend the time to plan properly because knowledge is power, and build in a contingency into your budget, just in case.

Both of the generously sized bedrooms have entry to the courtyard,
a unique feature that o ers equal access to the outdoor space.
“The apartment is oversized compared to the average at 126 sqm,” says Kaylene. “G01 is an adaptable apartment so it enjoys larger open floor space, walk in shower, and two wider than average car spaces. “The style is classic, with an emphasis on high ceilings, storage and practical living.”
