How’s this capricious spring weather? 20-plus one day, minus something overnight the next! How to dress for these fresh forecasts? Well, have we got a spring fashion spread for you!
We hope you enjoy our ‘Fresh Forecasts’ fashion shoot, photographed on location at Highball Bar in the Melbourne Building and starring the lovely Alisha from Victoria’s Models. Thanks to those local businesses for looking after us.
The outfits have been styled by our fashion editor, Anja de Rozario, sourced from local boutiques and fashion outlets (actual brick-andmortar retailers right here in the ACT region), the looks expertly captured by our photographer, Kerrie Brewer. As a local Canberra business ourselves, it’s important we support other businesses in the region that employ local people and contribute to our community and economy. Please shop local, whenever possible.
Reasons to be grateful this past week include having people in my life whom I love, catchups with friends old and new, Canberra Business Chamber’s latest networking event at Hyatt Hotel Canberra, opening night of The Children at ACT Hub, Father’s Day celebrations, and unpredictable spring weather. Take care,

Trek of All Trades: I Got You’s convoy for World Suicide Prevention Day
Two years ago, Joshua Clarke, a 25-year-old Canberran, a construction worker and carpentry apprentice, took his life. His bereaved family, determined to raise awareness of male suicide, particularly among construction workers, a high-risk industry, started a fundraising business, I Got You.
This Sunday, World Suicide Prevention Day, I Got You will hold its first Trek of All Trades, a vehicle convoy and barbecue.
Joshua’s mother, Leesa Mountford, co-founder of I Got You, said the event will be “an opportunity for the community to get together and remember and reflect on the lives that we have lost to suicide … [and] a social day for people to connect and support each other”.
The convoy will begin in Victoria Street, Hall, near the showground, at 10am, and make its way to Casuarina Sands, Cotter Road. There will be a family picnic and barbecue, and games of touch rugby and cricket.
“[Suicide] is a very serious topic, but for such a heavy topic, we can still do things together that don’t make it so heavy,” Ms Mountford said.
“It doesn’t have to necessarily be in a counselling room; it can be just opening up over a sausage sandwich, over a friendly cricket match, over a friendly touch game. It’s about the connection so that people do feel valued. And if they’re not having such a good time, they know that OzHelp is there to support them.”
OzHelp, a Canberra-based suicide prevention organisation for blue-collar workers, will host the barbecue.
I Got You has raised more than $70,000 for OzHelp, through selling apparel, community sports, and fundraisers – “An invaluable contribution,” deputy CEO Bruce Papps said.
StandBy Support After Suicide, a suicide prevention program, and the Men’s Table, a peerto-peer mental health community group for men, will have members at the event, too.
“There are places that can help support and listen,” Ms Mountford said. “You don’t necessarily have to go to a GP and get on a waiting list.”
People from all walks of life are welcome. Tradies are encouraged to bring their utes and trucks. Register on Facebook.
“We don’t want it to be a sad day,” Ms
Mountford said. “We have enough of those days. We have enough of those moments. We just want to have a day where it’s OK to be vulnerable, it’s OK to feel whatever you’re feeling – anger, whatever. But let’s use the 10th of September to support each other and connect and let people know that I Got You.”
On average, nine Australians die by suicide every day, 75 per cent of whom are men.
Construction workers are particularly high risk: according to industry-based suicide prevention charity MATES in Construction, 190 construction workers die by suicide every year, one every two days. They are twice as likely to take their own lives than other young Australian men, and eight times more likely to die from suicide than an accident at work. The causes, MATES state, are the highly transient nature of construction work, and difficulty discussing feelings and emotions.
Fortunately, Ms Mountford says, “one of the great things about OzHelp is they go into the workplace”.
The foundation was established in 2001 after the suicides of ACT building apprentice David O’Bryan and three others within three months. OzHelp runs programs for tradies, focused on building and construction and on transport and logistics.
The money I Got You raised went towards the Life Skills Toolbox, a health and wellbeing program supporting apprentices in high-risk, hard-to-reach industries. It helps participants identify resources, build the skills needed to navigate life’s challenges, and address psychosocial risk factors for suicide.
Ms Mountford said the fundraiser was going to be a one-off; but the third will be held in April next year, which aligns with Joshua’s anniversary.
“It’s an opportunity for the family and Josh’s friends to remember the great things that Josh did, and the wonderful human that he was, but also to raise funds for OzHelp or any other community or charity that could benefit from funds for prevention of suicide or postvention of suicide.”
Earlier this year, I Got You was one of two ACT winners in Suicide Prevention Australia’s LIFE Awards.
“Suicide is part of our life every minute of every day,” Ms Mountford said, “and if we can do our little bit to avoid a family going through the trauma that we experienced, then that’s what we’ll do … If we can do just a little bit, or a lot, that helps us get out of bed every day.”
To get help 24/7, phone Lifeline on 13 11 14 or the Suicide Call Back Service on 1300 659 467. If you or someone you know are in immediate danger, phone 000 for emergency services.

Do we need more senators?
I once thought, for purely selfish reasons, that the ACT should have six senators as such a number would always guarantee two Labor and two Liberal senators and that I could get one of the two Liberal spots and, with luck, end up MInister for Defence.
However, now I’m not so sure it’s really necessary. For a number of decades, we had a senate of 36, comprised of six per state, and when the number was increased to 12 per state in 1975, we also got two per Territory.
It is now federal Labor policy to increase the number of senators for the ACT and NT. No number is specified but it will be either four or six. It’s also not clear if this will be in time for the next federal election. Now is probably as good a time as any for all parties to look at how big the Senate should be. One possibility might be to decrease the size of the Senate and go back to six senators per state, keeping the two
each for the Territories. Do we really need 12 senators per state?
I doubt that would get up, but let’s look at the scenario of four or six for the ACT and NT. The NT would probably elect two each from Labor and Liberal or three each if there were six, with the possibility of three from one major party, two from the other, and one independent or minor party.
If the ACT went to four for the next election, I think Katy Gallagher and David Pocock would be returned with one Liberal and either a second Labor or a Green (probably a second Labor). If it was six senators, there would be Pocock, two Labor, two Liberal, and a Green or third Labor.
If it does not change and we still have only two senators at the next election, I think Gallagher and Pocock would keep their seats. Whilst he has made a few errors and has started to cheese off a few people, the majority of
people I speak to still regard him as a breath of fresh air and see him as a diligent local senator working (largely) for the ACT. The 17 per cent of Liberal voters who abandoned Zed in 2022 would need to return to vote Liberal in 2024/25. Recent reports that Zed is eyeing a comeback are interesting, but in my view that would be premature and probably end in tears for Zed. Even if the Liberals preselected a fresh new candidate, it would still be hard to shift Pocock at this stage.
He is high profile and very active in the community. Unfortunately, he missed one event (and it’s a big one): the Parliamentary World Cup being played in France, where (so my old friend and former Australian Women’s rep, Vicki Fisher tells me) France has just beaten Australia 8-7. David, if you were there, we would probably go through the tournament undefeated and reclaim the cup from those “Black Benchers” from New Zealand.

Canberra hosts birthday party for extraordinary Digger
2023 marked the 50th anniversary of Australia’s withdrawal in 1973 of our ten-year involvement in the Vietnam War in which 60,000 Australians served, more than 3,000 were physically wounded and, tragically, 523 lost their lives.
Each year, on 18 August, Australia remembers and honours these veterans on Vietnam Veterans Day.
Less than two weeks later, one such 89-year-old Digger and his wife set off from Mackay, Queensland on a plane bound for Canberra.
Humble to the core, he had no idea of the scale of event that awaited him. “It was a big surprise,” he later admitted, sitting in his wheelchair at Poppy’s Café following the Last Post Ceremony last Wednesday evening at the Australian War Memorial.
This humble Digger is Keith Payne
VC AM.
Keith is the 96th recipient of the highest honour for bravery ‘in the presence of the enemy’ available in the Commonwealth, and the last living Australian recipient of the original Imperial Victoria Cross.
The event was Keith’s 90th birthday party, made possible thanks to the generosity of Canberra businessman Richard Rolfe AM and wife Debbie Rolfe AM, with the support of other benefactors whose gifts of wine, a birthday cake, limited-edition coins for all guests, the pictorial Art of Sacrifice book and more, were all testament to the impact Keith continues to have.
Ray Martin AM travelled to emcee the proceedings and honour the man who was the subject of the documentary he presented three years ago, An Australian Hero – Keith
Payne VC
Those in attendance included Keith’s wife Flo, sons Ron, Greg, Colin and Derek and their families, and an extraordinary assembly of some of the most decorated Australians and
international guests, dignitaries and veterans.
Among the 160 guests were Australian Victoria Cross recipients Dan Keighran VC and Mark

Ainslie’s Atkins Avenue
to old and new Home
The leafy Inner North suburb of Ainslie recently welcomed a new treasure trove of vintage charm and contemporary gems. Co-owners of Atkins Avenue, Tiana Durston and Amanda Mackenzie are “curators of beautiful things,” previously operating Blue Moon Vintage as part of Dirty Janes.
“We’ve felt so welcomed here in Ainslie. It’s been a wonderful new beginning,” says Tiana. “In just five weeks, we feel part of the community already.”
The shop windows are an eclectic mix of vintage homewares and unique gifts from local makers. The sign reads “Atkins Avenue: For New & Old”. After three years of exclusively selling the latter at Blue Moon Vintage, Tiana and Amanda wanted their new store to reflect the mix of vintage and modern that they emulate in their own homes.
“Both our homes are a mix of old and new,” says Amanda. “Sometimes I go into homeware stores and they seem a bit sterile to me. And I know some people go into op shops and think they can’t find anything good.”
Beautiful things can be found in every era, “and Atkins Avenue is a destination for people who are interested in beautiful things,” she says simply.
The name itself holds a special place in Amanda’s heart, paying homage to the street in Melbourne where her grandparents resided.
Her grandmother, a stylish op-shopper and avid auction-goer, inspired her mother’s love for repurposing old items into something vibrant and new.
While her mother grew up on the original Atkins Avenue, Amanda grew up in Dickson. Back then, there were no Dickson shops so her family and neighbours were regular visitors
to Ainslie shops over many years. When it came time to open their own store, no other location felt quite as right.
“Both Amanda and I love that sense of community and we’ve certainly found it in Ainslie and the neighbouring suburbs,” adds Tiana.
The two met as teachers working at the same school and bonded over their “love of lovely things”. Thus began a 20-year friendship, the bedrock of their business.
Their friendship is the foundation for everything in their business and they have now invited their friend Sue Dempsey to join the team.
In three words, Amanda describes Atkins Avenue as “beautiful, interesting, and unpredictable”.
Their extensive range includes mid-size furniture, china, linens, books, and glassware, with a suite of local stockists including Wattle Bird Soaps, and organic skin
products from Equilibrium in the NSW Southern Highlands.
Sustainability is a core value for Tiana and Amanda – the former restores and upcycles lamps and picture frames that are also available in store.
“Keeping it out of landfill is definitely something we are passionate about,” says Tiana. “A lot of these things will now end up in a loved home, from one generation to the next.”
“Sometimes I listen to the grandparents who bring their grandchildren in, and they might come across an old Singer sewing machine and say, ‘What’s that?’ To hear the stories that are evolving through the generations is really quite lovely,” she says.
Atkins Avenue is open six days: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and weekends from 10am to 5pm. Follow them on Facebook and Instagram @atkinsavenue.shop.
Patrons can now sign up for their Christmas VIP event, where more surprises, discounts, and delights await.

Split-family visas a priority
The Afghan Ambassador reminds us to keep hope alive for his country (CW 31 August, p14). His address at the Press Club was a useful reminder of our hopes for those Afghans left behind at the fall of Kabul and what has happened to them since August 2021. We also need to remember the importance of re-uniting families, especially those who managed to get across borders to Pakistan and Iran and are seeking split-family visas.
They are families deeply at risk because they are related to people who worked either for the former government, or the former allied military forces. 41 of our soldiers died in Afghanistan providing protection for its residents. Let’s continue that protection with quicker issuing of their split-family visas.
- Peter Graves, Curtin
Resilience of Afghan people
After reading Georgia Curry’s article ‘Embassy of Afghanistan in Canberra keeps hope alive’ (CW 31 August, p14) I was mightily impressed with the spirit and resilience of the Afghan people. Somehow, they have overcome a would-be cultural extinction by the Taliban, and openly defied their radically restrictive rules. Women and girls dare to wear whatever clothes they wish to, and to be educated in the ways of the “western devil”. But most admirable of all, they have survived to send diplomatic missions to western countries such as Australia. They should be proud; and they should be saluted.
- Douglas Mackenzie, Deakin
Shoot nothing but photos
While John Lawrence (CW 31 August p22) has been following the
letters on wildlife and introduced animals, it doesn’t appear he has actually understood the issue. That is, we cannot kill our way back to biodiversity.
I certainly agree about the need to attract tourists. Where we differ is that I support sustainable, animal-friendly wildlife tourism where the only shots taken are with a camera.
- Robyn Soxsmith, Kambah
Respect all living creatures
Yes, John Lawrence your letter about feral animal eradication (CW 31 August p22) was either satirical (initially, I nearly choked laughing) or deliberate for its blanket inclusion of wildlife as feral. Are you focussed on promoting family bonding fun in hunting? Are you new to the ACT perhaps having arrived from the north? The list of dangerous weapons to be controlled costs taxpayers, but hang on, how do you know all the details? The setting-up and enforcement of protocols for private hunting sounds challenging and unlikely to be capably monitored on Australia’s private landholdings or through governmentsanctioned culls. There are plenty of statistics that indicate methodology or protocols are not working. Is your reference to Indigenous leadership to be co-opted for your ideas potentially an oblique justification that would also be a taxpayers’ expense? Can you ignore how many Australian species of living creatures are added as fair game / submit to by-kill on a national scale? For our greater good perhaps? My maths is not too bad, but it is difficult to see how your proposal brings a win except for those hunting, as a sport, paying for expensive ammo and the availability of more dangerous weapons. Maybe
our next Census could include a question on weapon ownership? Are we losing our ability to respect all living creatures and their humane treatment? There are lots of areas where we humans could improve on our behaviour or do we need shooting tragedies already taking place every single day? Very concerned,
- Ilona Crabb, Narrabundah
A balanced approach to drugs
I refer to Bill Stefaniak’s opinion piece ‘CPO slams ACT Green/ Labor government on drugs’ (CW 31 August) and agree with his comments, which the Government may wish to follow up on. Decriminalisation could lead to increased consumption and accessibility of these highly addictive substances. Reduced legal consequences might inadvertently send a message that these drugs are less harmful, potentially leading to higher usage rates, especially among vulnerable populations. Moreover, decriminalisation might undermine efforts to combat drug trafficking and organised crime. A legal market for hard drugs could create opportunities for illicit manufacturers and dealers to exploit regulatory loopholes, worsening the existing challenges of drug-related violence and criminal enterprises. The public health implications cannot be overlooked either. Decriminalising drugs without a comprehensive strategy for treatment and harm reduction could result in a surge of drugrelated health issues, straining healthcare systems and exacerbating social problems.
Furthermore, the potential for addiction to impact productivity and public safety remains a concern. Increased drug use
14 canberraweekly.com.au 07 September 2023
to the editor
could lead to more accidents, workplace inefficiencies, and strained social services.
While the intention behind decriminalising hard drugs like ice and heroin might be well-meaning, the dangers of such a move are significant. A balanced approach involving comprehensive addiction treatment, harm reduction strategies, and thoughtful policymaking is essential to address the complex challenges posed by these substances.
- Errol Good, Macgregor
Climate action in the ACT
Local Greens MLA Jo Clay asks, “Is the ACT taking enough climate action?’ (CW 29 August).
ACT greenhouse gas inventory reports show that electricity use within the ACT caused 70 million tonnes of Scope 2 CO2-e (carbon dioxide-equivalent) emissions from 1989 to 2020. Those emissions occurred outside the ACT. Under the government’s policy of 100 per cent renewable electricity, we have not added to that total since 2020. We have no plan to remove those emissions from the atmosphere.
Since 1989, 50 million tonnes of net Scope 1 emissions have occurred within the ACT’s borders.
The government’s so-called “net zero emissions by 2045” target applies to annual increases in total Scope 1 emissions. Under that policy, net total Scope 1 emissions will continue to
increase each year until 2044.
The Commissioner for Sustainability and the Environment estimates that in 2018 the ACT caused a total of 35 tonnes of emissions per person. Subtracting five tonnes from electricity generation brings our annual emissions to just below 30 tonnes per person. That is more than four times the world average. 94 per cent of the ACT’s carbon footprint is Scope 3 emissions. Those emissions occur outside the ACT, in producing and transporting goods and services that we consume here. The government’s only commitment to addressing Scope 3 emissions is to talk about them.
In answer to Ms Clay’s question, I say that the ACT is taking too much climate action.
- Leon Arundell, Downer
I agree with Stefaniak this time
I have to say I agree with Bill Stefaniak’s every word this week (CW 31 August p10), lamenting the decriminalisation of hard drugs in the ACT. I have some concerns with the decriminalisation of the softer drugs, but ice and heroin? One of my many fears is the people who get behind the wheel whilst under the influence. If any defence lawyer puts that up as a mitigating factor when these people are brought before the courts having killed someone, I’d like to see that lawyer do time as well!

Springtime recipes
I recently enjoyed my very first blood orange of the season - floral and tart and promising warmer days ahead. In honour of the first week of spring, a fudgy sweet recipe for a blood orange treacle tart, as well as a 15-minute salad that makes a lovely dish for picnics or packed lunches.
WITH TASTE EDITOR, ANJA DE ROZARIO
Orange treacle tart
Serves 6–8
6 blood oranges, half sliced into roughly 4mm rounds, half juiced 80g caster sugar
320g sheet of ready-rolled all-butter pu pastry
420g bitter orange marmalade
200g soft white breadcrumbs
Thick double cream, to serve (optional)
Heat the oven to 180°C.
Arrange the orange slices in a double layer in a shallow baking dish. Pour over the orange juice and sprinkle over 4 Tbsp sugar, then cover with foil. Roast for 1 hour until the oranges are tender, then set to one side. Drape the pastry over a 23cm tart tin with a loose base, press it into the tin and prick the bottom with a fork to stop it pu ng up too much in the oven. Cover with baking parchment and fill with baking beans. Blind bake in this manner for 15 minutes,
Lemony chickpea & walnut salad
Serves 1
210g jar of chickpeas
1 1/2 Tbsp olive oil
1 small onion, chopped
Finely grated zest and juice of 1/3 lemon
Leaves from a small bunch of parsley, chopped
Handful of walnuts
Sea salt flakes and freshly ground black pepper
Drain the chickpeas in a colander and run them under cold water to wash them clean. Keep running water over them until the water is clear and no longer frothy.
Heat the olive oil in a saucepan over a medium heat. Add the chopped onion and a generous pinch of salt. Fry gently for 3–5 minutes until the onion softens and turns translucent.
until the pastry looks golden on the edges. Remove the baking beans and parchment and cook for a further 5 minutes, until the pastry feels dry to the touch.
While the pastry is baking, warm the marmalade in a medium-sized saucepan over a medium heat, until all melted and syrupy. Take the pan o the heat, add the breadcrumbs and stir together with a wooden spoon until you have a thick, sticky paste. Spoon the syrupy filling into the pastry case and smooth out with the back of your spoon. Arrange the orange slices over the filling, overlapping and in concentric circles, so the entire surface is covered in a blanket of candied orange. Drizzle the last of the orange juices over the fruit, then set the tart back in the oven and bake for a further 20 minutes.
Take the tart out of the oven, sprinkle with the remaining sugar, then pop back in one last time for 5–10 minutes until the oranges are deliciously caramelised. Serve warm, ideally with thick cream.
Add the chickpeas and toss together in the pan, just long enough to heat through.
Now, remove from the heat and add the lemon zest and juice. Toss together. Lastly, sprinkle over the parsley and crumble in the walnuts. Toss together for a final time, season to taste and serve warm or at room temperature, as you like.

Page Bottler to beyond ordinary beers!
Tucked away within the unassuming suburban streets of Page, there’s a hidden gem for craft beer aficionados. Page Bottler isn’t your ordinary bottle-o.
It’s a passport to beer heaven, run by a pair of Canberra brothers, Tim and Harry Rasheed.
“We’ve been focusing on craft beer since 2015, when it was just starting to take o here in Australia, and in Canberra particularly,” says Tim. Beginning with a humble o ering of 20 craft beers, they gradually worked their way up to the whopping 500 options to choose from today.
By Tim’s estimate, you would have a hard time finding more than 70 per cent of the Page Bottler range anywhere else in Canberra. He started the Bottler in 2014, slowly building up a loyal customer base of those in-the-know.
“A lot of our customers have been shopping with us for the best part of nine years,” he says.
“We know them by name, and we know what they like. They’ve really supported us. It’s a great community that we’ve built up here.”
Every week, their free Friday arvo beer tastings, to celebrate the end of the work week slog, entice new customers o the streets of the Page Shops to come on in and “try before they buy”.
“We try and cycle through as many di erent breweries, give them an opportunity to show o what they’re doing and give customers a chance to try something they may have never thought of trying before.”
Before setting up shop in Page, Tim spent 10 years working for a big box liquor retailer, where he noticed a gap in the market. “There’s one thing that the big boys can’t do, and that’s limited release beers,” he says.
Today, the Page Bottler stocks everything from mainstream o erings to a local wine selection, hard-to-find liquors and Australian-made gin and whisky. But the star of the show is their
craft beer cool room.
“A lot of people will walk into the shop and head left straight into the cool room to grab their beers for the weekend,” says Tim.
“On average, we get in 30 new beers a week. We keep it fresh, which is a massive factor when it comes to craft beer.”
Beer is for every night of the week, which is why the Page Bottler fridge of ‘non-alcs’ is nearly as popular as their craft beer cool room.
“Non-alcoholic beer has been a big thing for us, and just the industry in general, over the last 18 months,” explains Tim. “A few people who might have potentially overdone it during lockdown are looking for non-alcs that still have great flavour.”
The alc-less fridge is always healthily stocked for their midweek customers, including with the “massively popular” Heaps Normal beverages. “They probably kicked o the revolution and have been a mainstay in our fridge for a couple of years now,” says Tim.
The Page Bottler ethos is quality over quantity, whilst also ensuring there is “something for everyone’s budget”.
“With the cost-of-living crisis that we’ve got going on, we always make sure to have six or seven of what we like to call ‘value for budget beers’.
“Still craft, still independent, our value for budget beers compete with the big guys, with prices that are every bit as good, if not better,” says Tim.
With top breweries cranking out multiple speciality beers a month, it can be di cult to keep up with the coolest releases. Page Bottler makes it easy with their Beer Subscription Service.
“It’s one of our most popular services that is unique to us. You can get 16 di erent beers every month, or every two months.”
Available for delivery or pick up, “You select the styles, and you never get the same beer twice.” Learn more at pagebottler.com.au/shop/subscriptions/
“If you haven’t been down to the shop yet, come down, have a chat, and give us a go,” says Tim. Your journey beyond ordinary beers awaits.

Tunes, laughs and friendship to last
From the tropical shores of Hawaii, the ukulele has captured the hearts of many, including Beatles lead guitarist George Harrison who collected the instruments. Strumming soothing sounds and catchy tunes, the Ukulele Republic of Canberra has created their own paradise with the instruments in our fair city.
Meeting up on the first Friday and third Saturday of the month at different locations, members come together for a Kanikapila, a Hawaiian impromptu jam session. Often having 40 attendees, they take turns choosing tunes to play from the republic’s songbook with everyone joining in.
“People do bring in their own music and hand that out and sing that as well,” says Sandra Shaw.
“Over the last few years, the group has been bringing along an amplifier and microphone; that encourages the shy among us to come out to the front,” adds Rod Fenwick.
Sandra started playing the instrument while working in a preschool in Singapore where the director required each class to have one ukulele.
With three adults in each room, there were tensions about who got the uke, so the adults each bought one of their own.
“I bought this blue thing for about $25 Singaporean; it was really dreadful, that’s how it started, I did learn the basic chords,” she smiles.
Returning to Australia, Sandra enrolled in a beginner’s ukulele class by UROC member, Michael Rosenberg. After learning strums and patterns, she joined the group and is coming up on her 10-year anniversary.
Being the partner of a dedicated guitar player, Rod’s wife enrolled in one of Michel Rosenberg’s ukulele classes, joining UROC. She encouraged Rod to come and give it a try. Buying a cheap uke, he went along with no idea how to play it.
“Someone said it’s a guitar, but you hold it like this, my brain went click and I said ‘oh, this is just a little guitar’ and all of a sudden I was able to play the ukulele,” says Rod.
For someone with no guitar experience, the ukulele is still relatively easy to pick up, the pair say. Rod says that thousands of pop songs use
the same four chords, which can be easily transferred.
“The ukulele only has four strings, it’s easier to learn the chords than it is on a guitar or a piano,” he says.

Kyle’s mission to bring Christian hip hop to Canberra
Ditching rhymes of gangsters, hos and guns, Christian hip hop, gospel rap or holy hip hop has been making moves in the music scene since the 1980s. Now, Canberra Christian hip hop artist Kyle Wilkins is on a journey to share his music and faith with listeners through his new EP, The First and the Last.
Spending the first 18 years of his life as what he describes as a loose cannon, Mr Wilkins found himself at rock bottom. Tired of drinking, smoking and petty crime, he thought there must be more to life than what he was living.
“Mistakes I made caught up to me and I looked at myself like, ‘Man, I’m not a good person, if I had a son or daughter, would they be proud of me? They wouldn’t. I’m not doing anything with my life. I’m just wasting it’,” he says.
Desperate and calling out for a sign of what to do next, the young man asked Jesus, if he was real, to help him in his time of need. Describing what happened next as a supernatural phenomenon, Mr Wilkins felt drawn to a house
with a cross. Knocking on the door, he was greeted by Christians. They suggested a youth group at a local church where Mr Wilkins met the pastor’s son, who invited him to meet his father.
“I went there and told them what I’ve been doing … He said, ‘Man, do you want to give your life to God and do a 180?’ And I gave it then,” Mr Wilkins says.
Rapping before finding faith, the artist initially thought he would have to give it up, with the rhymes and themes being “ungodly”. Then discovering other Christian hip hop artists, he thought maybe he could use his gifts and talents for a bigger purpose.
“I don’t swear in my raps, I try to leave profanity out of it. I just talk about my experiences, God and my views on life,” he says.
While Christian rock and alternative bands have made their way onto mainstream airwaves, things have been a bit slower for devout hip hop artists.
‘There’s a massive Christian hip hop scene in
America but in Australia, it’s not as big. It’s quite small actually, I think in all of Australia, there’s probably 50 to 100 people doing it,” says Mr Wilkins.

Haunted Mansion (PG)
In New Orleans, astrophysicist Ben Matthias (LaKeith Stanfield), meets his future wife Alyssa, a ghost tour guide, and explains that he is developing a camera to detect dark matter. Flashing forward, Ben is now a drunken, depressed ghost tour guide himself. At the dark and spooky Gracey Manor, however, Gabbie (Rosario Dawson) and her son, Travis (Chase W. Dillon) move in, where they are soon visited by a ghost.
The extremely successful Pirates of the Caribbean (2003) kicked off Disney’s plan to base a series of movies on their Disney World theme park rides. The unsuccessful Haunted Mansion (2003) led to plans of a reboot in 2010, before it entered development hell where several rewrites by several writers led to this underwhelming, bland, boring box-office bomb.
While the movie is jampacked with a star-studded ensemble cast,
including name cameos, they are given very little to work with. Given the two-hour run time, this leads to a lethargic pace, leaving our cast of characters to spout reams of exposition to each other as opposed to organically investigating the mystery of the haunted house themselves.
The plot is unnecessarily complicated, convoluted, and incomprehensible, with our characters being placed in confusing situations and making questionable choices. All of this is such a shame considering the talent involved, the cost, and the excellent design of the mansion itself and its ghosts. A family adventure set within a haunted house should have been a sure thing.
Verdict: A disappointing and puzzling waste of talent, money and time. 1 star.

100 years of portraits
After three years of travelling the country, the highly acclaimed Archie 100: A Century of the Archibald Prize exhibition will land at the National Portrait Gallery on 20 October.
Curators have carefully selected just 100 of the more than 6,000 entries in the competition throughout the years. A national call-out uncovered lost pieces with works coming from libraries, galleries, museums and private collectors at home and abroad.
Running for over 100 years, each decade of the prize is represented by
artists coming from Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand. Helping to tell a complex story of portraiture and history, each piece offers insight into a moment in time, while artistic methods and social conventions grow and change.

Benefits of finger breathing
It’s all too easy to get stuck in fight-or-flight mode and lose yourself in the stresses and anxieties of modern life. One technique that leading hypnotherapist at Cavendish Cancer Care, Clare Longstaffe, uses to help both patients and their loved ones cope with the impact of cancer is called ‘finger breathing’. It’s a quick and easy self-hypnosis method that can help you ease overwhelming feelings.
If you want to give finger breathing a try, it’s recommended that you practise regularly when you are not stressed. If something is familiar to us, we are more likely to remember to use it when we need it most.
Step 1: Start by lying or sitting down in a comfortable position. Relax your breathing by inhaling more deeply and slowly than you
would normally.
Step 2: Bring the fingers and thumb of one hand together in a relaxed pinched position. Using your other hand, cup and loosely rest your bunched fingertips in your palm. Count five relaxed breaths while keeping your hands in this position.
Step 3: Swap hands and count five breaths again.
Step 4: Next, make a thumbs-up with one hand and then wrap the fingers of the other hand around the opposing thumb. Loosely hold your thumb while you count five relaxed breaths. Then swap hands and count five breaths again.
Step 5: Repeat this process on the rest of your fingers, i.e., wrap the fingers of one hand around your opposing index finger and hold for five relaxed breaths, before switching hands and repeating the process.

The one-stop shop
January Health Foods gluten-free
Belconnen recently welcomed a game-changer for the local coeliac community, with the opening of January Health Foods, Canberra’s first gluten-free specialty store.
Next to Priceline and near the North Canberra Family Practice on Chandler Street, this one-stop-shop is the brainchild of owner Kelly Moss.
More than just a health food boutique, January Health Foods embodies a mission to provide a safe space for individuals with coeliac disease, or who are otherwise gluten-free.
As Kelly shares, “We’re also incorporating dairy-free and vegan, because a lot of gluten-free foods that we have in store target those lifestyles as well. Gluten-free can also be a lifestyle choice, but if you have coeliac disease, it’s a necessity.”
Kelly has navigated coeliac disease for the past 14 years, after being diagnosed as an adult and quickly learning of the struggle to find all her
gluten-free ingredients in one location.
She opened January Health Foods in August this year. When customers walk in, they are greeted by more than a store – it’s a partner in their dietary journey.
“We read the labels for you,” Kelly explains. “When you are shopping for an allergy, you tend to spend more time reading the labels of things you want to buy, than actually looking for the things you need.
“We do all that for you. We make sure everything in store is safe so you can just come in and shop around for the things you normally can’t get in other stores, all in one place.”
From condiments to baking mixes to cookbooks, Kelly encourages Canberrans to explore January Health Foods’ extensive offering.
The store also includes gluten-free products making their Canberra debut, such as Ardor Food Co.’s gluten-free flours and ready-made meals, and
Grön Haus’ delectable frittatas and pies.
“We are new and we’re looking to expand our range, so if there is anything that you haven’t been able to find or are looking for, let us know!”
Explore the range at January Health Foods, Shop 2a/1 Chandler Street, Belconnen. Open Monday to Friday 9.30am-5.30pm, and Saturday 9am-2pm. To find out more, visit januaryhealthfoods.com.au, email hello@januaryhealthfoods.com.au or call 0433 834 427.

Weetangera 35A Gillespie Street
Only two years old and presented in as-new condition, this sleek showpiece in Weetangera is built with the 21st century family in mind. Agent Treston Bamber says his favourite part of the property is the “northerly aspect, with plenty of natural light”.
The high specs of this contemporary abode ensure comfortable living all year round. Upon entry, you are greeted with polished concrete floors with in-slab heating, high ceilings, and top-notch fittings and fixtures.
“It’s as-new with a great EER,” says Treston, “with plenty of off-street parking, a great alfresco outdoor entertaining area and an enclosed yard.” Entertainers will love the sleek black kitchen with wood accents and feature lighting, and the light-filled

open-plan living and dining area that seamlessly flows through stacking doors to the covered outdoor spaces.
Living here puts you a short walk away from fantastic primary and high schools, the Hawker shops and playing fields, as well as only being a 15-minute drive from the city. However, as Treston puts it, most of the appeal is in the “amazing family-friendly community of Weetangera”.
