From the editor No surprises in the Voice referendum that the ACT voted yes in the majority, and was the only jurisdiction to do so. The challenge now for all Australians and governments is to work together more effectively to close the gap, and to continue walking together on the path to, in the PM’s words, a “reconciled destination”. “When we reflect on everything happening in the world today, we can all give thanks that here in Australia we make the big decisions peacefully and as equals,” he said on Saturday night. Hear! hear! Reasons to be grateful this past week include opening night of Oklahoma! at The Q, a dear friend’s retirement celebration at Hyatt Hotel Canberra, networking at Canberra Business Chamber’s latest Business After Business event hosted by Canberra Airport, and indulging in Kurt’s special 20th anniversary menu at Grazing in Gundaroo. Bon appetit, indeed! Take care,

Having kittens: RSPCA ACT looking for foster carers The four kittens the RSPCA ACT’s Nikki Hohmuth is fostering are engaging little furballs. Only a month old, they wriggle and squirm, refusing to sit still for their portraits. Cute as they are, they are something of a handful – and the RSPCA ACT is expecting hundreds more now kitten season has begun. (Pusses galore, one might say.) Over the next few months, the RSPCA will take in more than 1,000 kittens, many of them orphaned. They are looking for people to foster them, especially the newborns, as well as pregnant cats. (Carers for dogs are also sought.) “If there are people out there who are able to be a volunteer, this is a time that we really need you,” CEO Michelle Robertson said. “Often for both cats and dogs, it’s the animals that come in that need extra help, that need more socialisation, and sometimes a bit of respite getting out of the shelter.” Kitten season typically runs from October to

May. A queen (or female cat) can produce four litters during one season; since a litter is usually four to six kittens, that means a single cat may have up to 24 kittens each year. Kitten season has grown longer over the last couple of years, too; litters are still being born as late as August, which is not healthy for the mother or kittens. Once kitten season ramps up, Ms Robertson said, the RSPCA will have 175 kittens in care at any given time. Last year, the most they had at any one time was 182 kittens, animal care manager Simon Yates said. But they don’t have enough foster carers. Close to 200 volunteers have signed up, but only a handful care for neonates (kittens less than one month old). These kittens are the hardest to foster, Ms Robertson said, because they need so much care. They are tiny, and some are so small they can fit into the palm of your hand. They cannot

regulate their own body temperature; they need to be fed every two hours; and in some instances, they need toileting. “It’s incredibly hard work, but incredibly gratifying, because you are literally saving that little kitten’s life, and enabling that neonate to grow into a kitten, to grow into a beautiful cat, and to live a good life,” Ms Robertson said. The perfect foster carer is someone who works from home, or is at home a lot. Nikki Hohmuth said her mother started (continued page 8)

(from page 6) fostering animals after her husband died. “My mum gets a lot out of it. She really loves it, and I think that gives her a bit of purpose. My dad passed away a few years ago, and then her first litter of kittens after that was really special for her. It gives her something to do with her time, and her way to give back. She’s adamant about buying everything for our kittens. We don’t take anything from here [the RSPCA]; she buys all their food and their litter. It’s like her supporting RSPCA as well as feeling like she’s in it and actually making a difference for the animals. And it’s really fun!” The four kittens Ms Hohmuth is fostering now, and their mother, were found in Kambah and taken to the Weston Creek shelter. She says their mum does most of the work (including teaching them how to use the litter tray). They are just starting to eat baby food. “I put some on my fingers, and stick it in their face; they struggle on it more than anything else, but they’re slowly becoming like miniature cats. … Some of them, especially the big fat one [named Womp – all four’s names start with ‘W’], will find it on their own, but some of them need more encouragement than others.” The kittens are still feeding off the queen; they get immunity through her milk. But they will soon start weaning, so need their own vaccinations. They get dewormed every two weeks, and have been microchipped and vaccinated. They won’t be desexed for another month, until they are eight weeks old. “That’ll give them time to learn how to be a cat, get a personality, and have all their vet work,” Ms Hohmuth said. “We get to do a lot of fun stuff at this age, just getting them used to different environments, different noises, different textures. I try to handle them as

much as I can to get them used to that as well. But the fun will begin now I get to play with them.” Two more kittens (a month older) were desexed the day Canberra Weekly visited the RSPCA. They were advertised on the weekend, and Simon Yates expected them to be gone within a couple of hours of their being advertised. All the kittens the RSPCA fosters will be offered for adoption. “Rehoming kittens, despite how many we get, is never a problem,” Mr Yates said. “We often think that there’s got to come a point when the market is saturated, so to speak, but it’s never happened. They all find homes. “They’re easier pets to look after [than dogs] in the sense that they’re contained. You don’t need to have exercise routines. With puppies and dogs, you need to have a lot more interaction, whereas cats are a bit more independent.” It’s not just cats that the RSPCA offers for adoption, though. At the end of last week, Mr Yates said, there were more than 170 animals in care: 72 adult cats, 24 kittens, 35 dogs, 11 roosters, 10 birds (including parrots and pigeons), eight rabbits, guinea pigs, and rats. (And a wild wombat.) All animals the RSPCA sells are desexed and microchipped, healthy, temperament tested, and have been checked for fleas, ticks and worms. The RSPCA urges the public to desex their cats to reduce unwanted litters and prevent overpopulation. During the last kitten season (October 2022 to this May), 160 stray female cats came into the RSPCA – they could have produced 3,840 kittens over those eight months. opinion down to business

WITH GREG HARFORD, CHIEF EXECUTIVE, CANBERRA BUSINESS CHAMBER

How can we get business to truly thrive? Although the Federal Government is a massive part of the Canberra economy, the private sector is critical to the future of the ACT. Two-thirds of the jobs here in the ACT are in private sector firms, and a thriving business sector is essential to ensuring that Canberra continues to be a vibrant city. So, how is it going? The Canberra Business Chamber has begun a quarterly survey of business sentiment. The results of the inaugural Canberra Business Beat survey are just out – and show that, overall, most businesses here in the Capital are doing okay. Six in 10 (61 per cent of) Canberra Business Chamber members report that they hit their targets for the last quarter; and 43 per cent are feeling positive about current business conditions. These results are positive – and are consistent with a local economy that has recorded a staggering 33 years of economic growth. However, the experience is mixed (some hospitality and retail businesses are really struggling); and the outlook is more uncertain, with just 46 per cent of businesses expecting to

grow over the next year. Higher interest rates, increases in wage rates, rents, rates, and continued challenges in attracting and retaining workers are all factors contributing to this uncertain outlook. The Federal Government’s move towards beefing up the public service and reducing the use of private sector consultants is also contributing to a sense of uncertainty, reflecting the importance of both the consultancy sector to Canberra, as well as the importance of the Federal Government as a client. While business performance, and the outlook, are relatively positive, I think the real question is: how can we do better as a business sector? Regulatory red tape is a fact of life for anyone in business. Paying GST and superannuation payments, complying with Federal employment law are important, but take time and can create real headaches because of the complexity of getting it right. Here in the ACT, there are also Territory-specific rules to contend with, and a third of businesses that operate cross-border say they think it’s harder to do business here than in other

states. There are specific regulations here that add cost not found elsewhere – portable long service leave for some sectors; higher payroll taxes; well-meaning but costly and badly targeted health and safety rules. All this is well-intended but can make it harder to run a successful business. Overall, things are going okay for businesses here in the ACT. A lot of firms are profitable, they are employing people, and keeping the economy ticking over. But how much better could it be if we get the policy settings right?

The Wharf Revue is back for another year of hilarious political satire!

opinion fit the bill

WITH BILL STEFANIAK AM RFD FORMER ACT OPPOSITION LEADER

Where to from here? The Voice, plus Senator Seselja from NSW? Congratulations to the No organisers on the referendum result. I, for one, never subscribed to the view that Australia would be the loser no matter who won as the referendum had divided the country. On the contrary, a basically civilised campaign has put first and foremost on the agenda what we still need to do as a nation to improve the lot (especially in remote and rural Australia) of our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander fellow citizens. We need to listen to their concerns and ideas on how to let them do things better themselves and what help they need to do so. The campaign also threw up a rare individual who has seized the imagination of the country: namely NT Senator Jacinta Nampijinpa Price – a conviction, tell-it-as-it-is, no-nonsense, straightshooting, no-spin politician who, in my view, can

go right to the top. These are positive things all round. We need to now get on with it and work together. Recently, our former Liberal Senator for the ACT Zed Seselja has indicated he is throwing his hat in the ring for the NSW Senate vacancy. I think it may be a sensible move by Zed, because unless the ACT goes to three or more senators before the next election were he to be pre-selected here and there were only two senators to vote for, the current incumbents would continue in their jobs. Very few people I talk to would leave David Pocock at this stage to vote for Zed. Katy Gallagher has not covered herself in glory as a minister, but Labor would get the required 33.33 per cent needed regardless. Even a fresh new Liberal candidate would struggle at this stage. By standing, Zed at least keeps his name before the punters.

Could Zed win the preselection in NSW? I doubt it. Even if Peter Dutton really pushed hard for him, Zed is not a New South Welshman. NSW is very parochial. They did not like hosting the Kookaburras or Belconnen Blue Devils in their respective rugby and soccer competitions. Even the exceptional Jim Molan was put fourth on the 2019 ticket behind two virtually unknown Liberal candidates. I was handing out how to vote Jim Molan cards at a Manly polling booth on election day 2019, and had a great chat with my old colleague, the effervescent and controversial Connie Fierravanti-Wells (Miss ANU Rugby 1985!), who was not voting for Jim. She, like Jim, was a right winger, and the two main candidates were moderates. I found that bizarre, but then again, the NSW division of the Liberal Party can be bizarre – and parochial.

The heading ‘Hamas no better than the SS’ (CW 12 October) to Bill Stefaniak’s column was in my view factually questionable and unnecessarily provocative. No one can deny the brutality of Hamas, but it hardly competes with the Nazis’ state-planned genocide of the Holocaust which resulted in the murders of millions of German and other countries’ citizens. Besides, Israel never “gave away” Gaza. For decades, there has been continued violence on both sides, and Israel has long had restrictive sanctions on the daily lives of Gaza’s citizens. Nor is Israel today anything but an authoritarian State, more so than at any time in its history; under the political thumb of Jewish fundamentalists who want to see “God’s will” imposed on the region. That is, God decreed the land belongs to the Israelites and they have total rights over all others. But Bill goes over the top when he urges Israel to “take the opportunity to smash Hamas”. Would he explain what he means; what would it entail; and what would be the cost to the Gazan population at large? It will simply go on as it has done for decades, retaliation and counter-retaliation compounded by fear, misery and death for thousands of innocent people on both sides. And people like Bill, as well as our government, keep sidling up to the US in egging Israel on, as if it is the beleaguered Middle East’s bastion of freedom and democracy, with unremitting military action the only answer. - Eric Hunter, Cook

Renewables not so bad Ian Pilsner (CW 12 October) writes of a National (US) Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration finding that offshore wind turbines “could increase ocean noise, which would affect the behaviours 14

19 October 2023

of fish and other species”. “Could” (not “would”) increase marine noise: by how much; and what “behaviours”? Mr Pilsner also notes the conclusion of “a PhD scientist” that “extensive expansion of offshore wind farms will have a significant impact on the structuring of marine coastal ecosystems”. How much impact is “significant”, and what exactly does “structuring” mean? As for birds, an estimate of 2,000 to 8,000 birds is very vague, but even 8,000 a year is minuscule when compared to birds killed by vehicles and windows of buildings, especially ‘glass-rich’ tower blocks. Mr Pilsner predictably praises nuclear energy, but makes several errors of fact. Early nuclear power plants had an average lifespan of 30 years; modern plants last 40 to 60 years. None of these is an average “lifetime”. Solar panels now last 25 to 30 years, with a 25-year manufacturer’s warranty, and have more recyclable components. Small modular reactors are still an unproven technology at the scale necessary to displace other low (or zero) emissions energy sources, and there is still the problem of where and how to dispose of large amounts of dangerous radioactive waste. Renewable energy is not so bad after all. - Douglas Mackenzie, Deakin

Biased not As he is a regular letter writer in the Canberra Times, if Eric Hunter (CW letters 12 October) really thinks the Canberra Times is not left wing biased, can he name me any of their conservative journalists? I can’t wait for his “unbiased” answer. For years, regular columnists like Jack Waterford and Crispin Hull have spewed out their far left views; if a publication is meant to be impartial and never prejudiced, (continued page 16) canberradaily.com.au

Voice has been silenced

What about the Stern Gang?

The people have spoken and the Voice has been resoundingly silenced. PM Albanese, together with indigenous professors Marcia Langton and Tom Calma as principal architects of the Voice, must accept full responsibility for its demise: Langton and Calma for demanding that the Voice be enshrined in the Constitution, and the PM for unwisely accepting the Uluru Statement in its entirety, knowing full well that referendums have a very poor success rate, particularly without bipartisan support. Regrettably, everyone loses under the circumstances, and maybe it’s time to de-politicise and for the nation to come together as a whole to ensure that the Indigenous community gets the recognition it deserves. The PM made an error of judgement when he allowed the Voice to

Re: Bill Stefaniak ‘Hamas no better than the SS’ (CW 12 October). Well, maybe Stefaniak should do some research on a group of Zionists by the name of Stern Gang. Lehi, often known pejoratively as the Stern Gang, was a Zionist paramilitary militant organisation founded in Mandatory Palestine in 1940 by Avraham (‘Yair’) Stern. The Stern Gang numbered no more than a few hundred. They operated in small groups and concentrated on the assassination of government officials. Notable attacks: Killing of Lord Moyne; Cairo–Haifa train bombings; Deir Yassin massacre; killing of Count Folke Bernadotte. - Gordon Buckley, Evatt Editor’s note: Lehi was founded in August 1940 and dissolved in May 1948 (Wikipedia).

clarification In his column of 12 October, Bill Stefaniak referred to Hamas militants as “screaming Palestian mobs”. CW seeks to correct this inaccuracy. Stefaniak said he saw footage of them “mutilating the bodies of slain Jewish women and children”; he did not repeat unconfirmed reports aired on CNN about babies being beheaded. The Australian Government lists Hamas as a terrorist

organisation. According to Australian National Security: “Hamas’ overarching goal is to ‘liberate Palestine’ by establishing an independent Palestinian state – comprising Gaza, the West Bank and Israel – guided by Islamic principles, and destroying Israel as a political entity in the process. Hamas supports a strategy of armed resistance in pursuit of its goals.” canberradaily.com.au

The Point aims to be a ‘family-friendly food hall meets entertainment precinct’.

Food for thought The latest in foodie news, events and products.

South.Point in Tuggeranong is set to open a new multimillion-dollar dining and entertainment precinct in December. The Point is a redevelopment of the former courtyard area, between the entrances to Target and The Good Guys. The entertainment precinct will feature a mezzanine beer garden, undercover outdoor seating, two large screens, new food and entertainment venues, and is centred

by a children’s playground. Construction is well underway, with the space set to home local favourites like Brodburger, Fricken Chicken, Phat Panda, and Biteful Kebabs. It also welcomes Metaphysica Virtual Reality, which offers VR games and adventures. Brodburger will be operating The Point’s bar, serving up a range of local wines, beers and spirits. “But even more exciting is our plans to host events, especially music gigs, in

a three-week period until Sunday 29 October. The gourmet journey starts with ocean trout rillettes, followed by butterflied king prawn, ash baked kangaroo loin, local rump of lamb and sticky glazed lamb rib, and, from Kurt’s bees on site, perfectly finishes with a delectable dessert of burnt honey crème, ginger and orange blossom, pear with honey jelly and candied pastry. The five Canberra district wines chosen to complement each course do so brilliantly. There’s nothing finer than dining on exceptional food and wine in beautiful surroundings, such as Gundaroo’s historic The Royal Hotel building dating from 1865. Bon appetit! Bookings: grazing.com.au

The final two vendors of Canberra Centre’s hawker-style dining precinct, Tiger Lane, have been revealed. Thai food sensation Supalove and Viet-French dessert bar Honey Toast were the missing pieces of the pan-Asian puzzle. Supalove serves up affordable Thai cuisine, courtesy of Head Chef Grace Prasongsook of Inka fame. At the recent joint opening, Supalove’s Pad Thai and Green Curry were instant crowd pleasers for their authentic flavours – which comes as no surprise as the latter is Chef Grace’s own mother’s recipe, born in Bangkok and brought to Canberra with supa-love. Honey Toast is a Vietnamese ‘hole in the wall’ concept, serving grab-and-go breakfast during the day and transforming into Tiger Lane’s dessert offering at night. The must-try menu item is their Crème Caramel Toast, which is Three Mills Bakery Shokupan (Japanese milk bread), topped with salted caramel ice cream and a whole crème caramel. Overripe strawberries? Try this simple recipe This is a great pudding to remember if you have overripe strawberries that are slightly past their best. Squeeze as much liquid out as possible, until you are left with about 550g of thickened yoghurt. Remove from the cloth – discarding any liquid – and transfer to a bowl. Stir in the cream and lemon zest and refrigerate until ready to use.

You value your peace. And yet a tense aspect between the sun and Pluto could ignite tempers, so be patient and avoid contributing to drama, especially at home. You could excel once you put your mind to tasks. You’ll enjoy socialising.

Be open to collaborate as intense feelings or even drama may arise. If you feel an argument has been brewing, take steps to avoid all-out and damaging conflict. You’ll enjoy a reunion and the chance to improve work options.

The key to happiness lies with your reactions to events; an optimistic reaction to circumstances will be most productive. Avoid taking news personally and look for ways to improve relationships and circumstances through socialising, networking and being positive. A change of pace or of place may take you somewhere new. Be practical and you will sail through the week. You may experience a financial or personal boost. Avoid subscribing to drama and avoid conflict, as it will escalate rapidly.

Being prepared to adapt to new circumstances puts you in a strong position, especially regarding your projects and the way you share space, duties and your home. You may need to alter a plan due to matters beyond your control.

You will appreciate support from someone special. However, some interactions may be intense. It’s a good time to focus on new ways to budget regarding debt such as household matters. You’ll enjoy socialising or a trip this weekend.

We are currently between two eclipses, and this can be an intense time. Developments could affect your status and direction moving forward. News you receive will be helpful and provide insight. Avoid conflict as it will spiral, especially this weekend. This is a good week to approach developments in a realistic, practical frame of mind, especially if you must alter your plans. Key news regarding your home or work could propel you into promising territory. Avoid arguments, as they will escalate.

You’ll enjoy making time for a favourite activity and socialising. This is a good week to look for teamwork and compromise because otherwise a difficult situation could become more complex. If conflict has been brewing, avoid a battle of wills. A business or personal partner has news for you. You may need to decide your priorities between work and home. Work or a domestic matter will benefit from careful negotiation and talks and as a result you can make great progress.

Developments may surprise you so take a moment to reconcile your ideas with your circumstances and be diligent with work and negotiations. Find time to de-stress when you can. You’ll enjoy a lovely trip or a favourite activity.

Unreliable people needn’t unsettle you. An overbearing or challenging person in your environment may behave true to character. It’s important to avoid initiating a battle. You could make great progress at work, so take the initiative.

feature Classic Capital Golf Tours Classic Capital Golf Tours aim to please from tee time to 19th hole beyond

C

lassic Capital Golf Tours is a golf tour business that takes the worry out of organising your next golf holiday. Starting five years ago and owned and operated by golfer and travel expert, Warren McCourt, it began by running golf tours to Canberra and the NSW South Coast. However, because clients liked its “booking to tee time” level of service, other areas in NSW were added. Now, Classic Capital Golf Tours also runs tours to the Central Coast, the Murray River, the Hunter/ Port Stephens and the Coffs Coast. Soon to be added will be the Hilltops and Central West region around Bathurst/Orange. The company specialises in providing bespoke tours where your accommodation and course choices are designed around the requirements of your group. Group sizes that have been catered have varied from four to over 100, but all receive the same level of care. We ensure that the golf courses

and

are in their best condition given the weather. That means that the client knows beforehand if there has been course maintenance done or the course has been affected by fire or flood. Several times in the past two years, we were an available contact point to be able to switch golf courses when the planned golf course went under water at the last minute! We also give you tips on the best off-course hospitality for each region. Studies done on golf travellers show that the 19th hole is the second or third most important factor in deciding on a golf destination. We help you take the trial and error out of dining out! With direct flights from Canberra to Coffs Harbour, those in the capital can escape the cold climate and play courses like Bonville, voted Australia’s most popular golf course. We will even organise the transportation at any destination you choose. For ideas on golf tours to the NSW regions, visit our website: www.classiccapitalgolf.com.au

Classic Capital Golf Tours operates tours to some of the most enjoyable golfing destinations around NSW and the ACT.

Your group is looked after from “booking to tee time” when you get away with Classic Capital Golf Tours.

time out Youngest CSO members to shine at fundraising gala Canberra’s youngest string players are set to wow audiences when they share their musical prowess at the Canberra Symphony Orchestra (CSO) Fundraising Gala on Friday 3 November. “The fundraiser event is a bit of a melting pot for us to tell the story of CSO. Having the young students there allows us to say, ‘here’s the starting point’, but at the end, we have the professional musicians playing musical jukebox. It really helps us show that journey,” says Rachel Thomas, CEO of CSO. The Kingsland Strings performance enrichment program was launched in July by the CSO to enable children to develop their skills and passion for classical music through specialised training in solo and ensemble playing and mentorship from the orchestra’s concertmaster Kirsten Williams. Since July, seven talented violin, viola and cello musicians aged between eight and 12 have taken part in the Kingsland Strings program run by the CSO, under the overarching Kingsland Pathway Program that provides musical education canberradaily.com.au

for young people. “We’re developing skills and creating a pathway for our young musicians so they have a natural endpoint of being in the CSO eventually and we have had three of these students pass CSO auditions,” says Ms Thomas. “What we’re really wanting to do is attract and retain our musicians in Canberra by giving them opportunities here.” The students come to the Kingland Strings program proficient with their instruments and able to sight-read music. Ms Thomas says they have all been learning for quite a while despite their young ages. Learning to play within an ensemble is the next natural step, however, Kingsland does it a bit differently, as one of the only unconducted youth orchestras in the country. Throughout the enrichment program, the young musicians are encouraged to hone their skills without a conductor. The teachers call the lead from the chair, sitting with the young musicians, which teaches them to look at and

together and makes it really cohesive and well expressed,” says Ms Thomas. According to Ms Thomas, the Kingland program differs from an orchestra in that it teaches students skills they are encouraged to share with other music groups they are part of. The program has been growing quickly, and Ms Thomas says it’s important that young people are given opportunities to experience all that music has to offer. “When kids are young, they are like sponges and take in all of these experiences and I think adding an experience like playing an instrument or some creative endeavour really helps to build the whole child so that they are getting a really well-rounded experience and all the beautiful things in life,” she smiles. To help children across our region be able to explore their love of music, the CSO subsidises the program and provides scholarships to make it more accessible. “That’s one of the reasons why the fundraiser is so important; we’re providing these opportunities for these kids within this program, but not only that, our other community programs where we reach people with hearing loss or diverse abilities,” says Ms Thomas. With two-thirds of CSO’s funding

generated through initiatives like the gala, corporate sponsorships and ticket sales, they understand the event’s importance and want to ensure attendees get the most out of the evening. Members of the group have performed for the CSO before, but the gala will be the first time they take the stage together as the Kingsland Strings, Ms Thomas says; the children play with such joy and confidence that their performances are a wonderment to see. Along with the outstanding talents of the Kingsland Strings, the gala features beautiful melodies from CSO ensembles as curated by Pip Thompson, plus an indulgent three-course dinner, wine and canapes. Bidders are at the ready as the live auction offers experiences and a fantastic range of goods, while the online silent auction is open now until the night of the gala. feature A Taste of Ireland

Take 5 with Brent Pace, producer of A Taste of Ireland After two decades of touring the globe, Irish dance sensation Brent Pace created the Pace Live Entertainment Group. The company brings the showstopping A Taste of Ireland – The Irish Music & Dance Sensation to Canberra Theatre on Saturday 21 October.

1

Tell us about the show. A Taste of Ireland is far more than just a show; it’s a captivating journey through the vibrant tapestry of Irish traditions and history. We delve into the heart of Ireland, narrating stories like the Easter Rising, the famine, the legacy of Brian Boru, and even the influence of the Vikings. What sets us apart is our incorporation of ‘craic’, the Irish spirit of fun and enjoyment. Unlike traditional Irish concert-style performances, we create an interactive experience, engaging directly with our audience. Our exceptional cast comprises world champions from Lord of the Dance, seamlessly intertwined with Australia’s finest local talents.

2

What drew you to Irish dancing? Irish dancing has been a significant part of my life since childhood, largely due to my mother,

a respected Irish dancing teacher in Melbourne. Growing up, I practically lived in dancing halls, attending competitions both in Australia and globally. The pivotal moment came when I was captivated by the iconic Riverdance performance during the Eurovision half-time show. I knew that was what I wanted to do.

3

Do you have any career highlights? From competing to performing, I have travelled across the globe, but in saying that, producing my own show and taking it on a global tour is undoubtedly a standout career highlight. It’s an incredible feeling to see something you’ve poured your heart into come to life on stages around the world. However, nothing quite compares to the sheer joy of bringing that show back to my home country.

A Taste of Ireland – The Irish Music & Dance Sensation takes over Canberra Theatre on Saturday 21 October.

4

Why are audiences drawn to Irish dancing? Its incredible athleticism, rooted tradition, and infectious energy. The intricate footwork, steeped in history and culture, showcases impressive skill. The passion of dancers, combined with lively music and vibrant costumes creates a visually stunning and emotionally engaging experience.

5

What’s next? I’m excited about the future! Balancing my career with being a parent to my 18-month-old daughter is a priority. There are also new shows in the pipeline, and we’re gearing up for international tours, promising more thrilling performances and memorable experiences. Answers condensed for publication. time out There is only one publicly accessible darkroom between Sydney and Melbourne – Canberra’s PhotoAccess at the Manuka Arts Centre. Its annual residency program draws applicants from far and wide, and the works created by four such artists will be on display in Dark Matter ’23 from 26 October. Coming from across the country, four artists spent up to nine months turning their visions into reality through the Dark Matter Residency. Given full access to the darkroom, PhotoAccess facilities and guidance from expert staff, the artists are encouraged to create innovative image-based works. Steeped in experimentation and exploration of social, political, environmental and aesthetic relevance, the works come together in the shadows of the darkroom. The hands-on process for many is something that cannot be matched when shooting digitally. “There is something undeniably wondrous and magical about seeing something in the world through the smallest of rectangles; when you hold a camera to your face, you are editing out huge

amounts of information, ,” says Odette England, photographer. “When you go and process your film and print in the darkroom, this image emerges out of the liquid.” Throughout their residencies, the four artists – Odette England, Isabella Capezio, Rowena Crowe and Janhavi Salvi – choose how often they visit the space. Whether they were there for months-long stretches or popping in for weeks here and there, they agree the opportunity to connect with other artists adds to their practice. “Doing a residency is a really special thing, changing where you are and putting time aside for the weeks I do come here. You get to meet new people, interactions pop up in ways that you can’t guess,” says Rowena Crowe, a time-based artist. Accompanying other artists who utilise the facilities at PhotoAccess on their creative outings and running into people has helped to mould the initial vision with which Ms Crowe entered the residency. She says running into someone in a pleated skirt one day had her experimenting with paper folds the next.

Now showing The Crime Is Mine (M)

In 1935, Paris, young struggling unemployed lawyer Pauline Mauléon (Rebecca Marder) tries to argue her way out of overdue rent. Pauline’s roommate, unsuccessful actress Madeleine Verdier (Nadia Tereszkiewicz) returns from an unsuccessful audition with a lecherous producer. Soon the police arrive, accusing Madeleine of murdering said producer. Based on the 1934 play Mon Crime, the movie plays like a screwball vaudeville stage play. Foregoing multiple sets and action, the movie instead focuses on quick-witted dialogue, convoluted plot and whacky reveals. Like Chicago, our femme-fatales face the patriarchy with acts of ‘alleged’ violence with debatable motivations fuelled by the desperation borne from the inequalities

of the time, which unfortunately ring true today. Madeleine is at the mercy of the men in her life; up against her landlord, the film industry, the court and her beloved André (Édouard Sulpice), who plans to wed for wealth to support Madeleine as his mistress. Despite being a lawyer, Pauline must share an apartment, and bed, with Madeleine due to her inability to break the glass ceiling. The pair therefore look at the crime as an opportunity to pull themselves out of poverty and into positions of autonomy, using their talents to manipulate the male dominated legal system, and media, to their advantage. The sets, costumes and architecture are beautifully representative of the period. Our leads are gorgeous, youthful, and effervescent, ready to take on the world if only they had a chance. Verdict: A solid screwball comedy elevated by its talented and beguiling cast. 4.5 stars. - Luke McWilliams themovieclub.net Viewed at Palace Electric.

The pandemic, however, had a profound, and sometimes deadly, effect on many, and in Life As We Knew It award-winning journalists Aisha Dow and Melissa Cunningham cast a clear light on the experience in Australia. Mixing moving personal accounts with astute examination of the bigger picture, they provide an engrossing compendium of the pandemic in Australia, from the Ruby Princess to the Melbourne lockdowns to the unique experience of the Covid-zero states. A must read.

The Teacher’s Pet by Hedley Thomas

Macmillan, $36.99 Hedley Thomas won a Gold Walkey award for his popular 2018 podcast about the 1982 murder of Sydney mother Lynette Dawson. There are conflicting claims about role of the podcast in re-igniting the murder investigation, but it certainly created a groundswell of interest and pressure. In The Teacher’s Pet, Thomas takes the reader on a behind-the-scenes account of the whole event from the murder to the podcast investigation to the courtroom drama and the subsequent conviction of Chris Dawson for the death of his wife. It also takes a powerful look at the sexual exploitation of teenage students. A gripping read.

Australia’s Most Infamous Jail by James Phelps

Harper Collins, $34.99 Also highly recommended for true crime fans, and those interested in Australia’s criminal history, is the latest book by James Phelps. The bluestone walls of Pentridge prison were home to Victoria’s worse convicts for more than a century. From Ned Kelly to ‘Chopper’ Read and Robert Ryan, the last man hanged in Australia for his crimes, Pentridge housed a virtual who’s who of Australian criminals. In Australia’s Most Infamous Jail, Phelps provides an interesting history of Pentridge and its inhabitants. The details are gruesome at times, but the stories, including the mystery of Ned Kelly’s missing skull, are fascinating and thought provoking.

the look Chloë Sevigny: The girl in the world Now 48 years old, original indie kid Chloë Sevigny was not yet 20 when she was named “the coolest girl in the world”, following a profile in The New Yorker that read, “Chloe can speak with some confidence about what’s happening in the street. Some say Chloe is what’s happening in the street.” Throughout the decades, critics and fans alike have struggled to put a finger on what exactly makes Chloë so cool. One thing is agreed upon, her wardrobe – the closest thing to that of a real-life Carrie Bradshaw – plays no small part. WITH BEAUTY AND FASHION EDITOR, ANJA DE ROZARIO

C l

Sevigny has described her early style as “radically experimental,” seen here wearing an asymmetrical beaded dress and tiger print tights at the 1996 premiere of Trees Lounge.

The image of the It-girl strolling on Miami beach in 2004, wearing a vintage red romper, cheap plastic shades and carrying a Louis Vuitton Neverfull, haunts beach-inspo Pinterest boards to this day.

Often embracing the androgynous, one of the few traceable patterns in Sevigny’s eclectic personal style is pairing a scraped-back bun with a feminine outfit, and ladylike heels with a masculine ensemble.

What better to pair with a prim tweed jacket and skirt than an oversized graphic tee? Much like her classic Chanel suit, Sevigny’s style influence never seems to get old.

Her take on airport style is just as eclectic and chic, accessorising a navy-blue blazer and striped mini dress with a straw boater, white Rebooks, and tube socks – as you do.

On the red carpet, she has a penchant for ultra-feminine looks with an unexpected twist, this hot pink Miu Miu dress worn to the 2019 premiere of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

Since becoming a mother, Sevigny is most often seen striding around Manhattan in a clompy shoe or loafers paired with prim white ankle socks.

When she does step on to the red carpet, like at the 2022 Venice International Film Festival for her film Bones And All, she proves that she is entirely capable of Hollywood bombshell glamour.

WITH ASSISTANT PROFESSOR DR VIVIENNE LEWIS, CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGIST AT UNIVERSITY OF CANBERRA

should we avoid doing when The importance of taking breaks What taking a break? With the exam period rapidly approaching for both university and school students, now is a great time to get into some good mental health study habits. My clients and students regularly come to me saying they are exhausted and just trying to get to the end of their exams or the Christmas break. For most of us, this break is still a few months away and just continuing on and busting your gut to get to the end is not the best way to go. Regarding exams, the strategy often taken, especially by students, is to study for long periods, often feeling guilty when one takes time out. Our brains can usually only concentrate for about 40 minutes at maximum capacity and after this point, our level of absorption of material or ability to think straight diminishes. Rather than trying to just push through when we are tired or struggling to concentrate, we are better off taking a mindful break for a few minutes. When we are at work, people’s ability to

concentrate fully on a task is dependent on the task at hand, how engaged we are with the task, whether we are hydrated and have eaten recently and how rested we are. For an average eight-hour workday, we need a good 20-30 minute-break about every two hours in order to reset and refresh.

What do we mean by taking a break?

A break is when we disengage from an intense activity (such as study) and actively rest our thinking brain. A break can be a few seconds just to stretch our physical body or a few minutes to focus on some basic needs and selfcare, such as having something to eat, a drink of water, a short walk or doing some deep breathing. It’s something that fuels our body and brain. It’s important to have regular breaks otherwise our bodies become stiff and sore, our brains overworked, and we feel lethargic or stressed.

Because the aim of a break is to give our brain rest and fuel our body, mindless activities such as scrolling on our phones or engaging with social media are best avoided. Our brain doesn’t recover from mindless activities. Rather, we should engage in mindful activities, activities where we gain energy and refreshment, such as food, water and relaxed movement. Getting enough sleep is important, as well as having time off from study. We can’t constantly study as there comes a point where our brain cannot absorb anymore, and we just start to feel tired and irritable. On the flip side, if you’re struggling from procrastination, try timetabling short periods of study/ work with the reward of a pleasant activity afterwards. Remember that it’s okay to take breaks and have days off even when we are working towards a deadline such as exams. Breaks help keep us alert and refreshed and make us more resilient during times of stress.

Green Shed find reaps thousands at auction A mid-century dining suite bought for $50 at The Green Shed has been sold at auction for almost $7000. The circular table setting including four nesting chairs was purchased from The Green Shed outlet adjacent to the Mugga Lane tip earlier this year. General manager at Fyshwick auction house, Evans Hastings Valuers and Auctioneers (EHVA), Adam McDonald, said it was not unusual for mid-century furniture in good condition to achieve significant prices. “We are ecstatic for the vendor but not entirely surprised at the result,” he said. “This was a fantastic find by the vendor, in very good shape, and it was hotly contested by a range of potential

Mr McDonald said the current cost of living squeeze was seeing more and more people offer premium items for sale to bring in some extra money and discerning buyers were lapping it up. “You never know when the next ‘find’ is going to be delivered and make thousands for its vendor,” said Mr McDonald.

Study reveals most Aussies work hybrid: Create the perfect home ‘office’ Just over two years since the last lockdown in the ACT was lifted (15 October 2021), you may be wondering about the lasting effects of the pandemic on the way Aussies work. Last year, 84 per cent of Australians said they had almost never worked from home before the pandemic. Recently, a national survey commissioned by Logitech revealed that six in 10 Australians (60 per cent) are now working hybrid. However, nearly 90 per cent of respondents feel ill-equipped with the necessary tools and resources to ensure productivity. According to the research, this disconnect between employee expectations and employer

support raises pressing questions about the workplace of the future. When it comes to future generations, 51 per cent of Gen Z employees are choosing to work from their bedrooms at least one day a week. Due to current cost of living, larger homes or dedicated office spaces are less accessible to younger generations. This may explain why 42 per cent of Gen Z workers move their work location within their homes, or venture outdoors during work from home (WFH) days. Despite resource limitations, employees continue to opt for a hybrid workplace due to increased creativity, relaxation and happiness, but feel more productive and connected when in the

office. Gen Z productivity guru, Bec Stewart, shares her tips on how to make sure your WFH space maximises your productivity – regardless of how small that space is.

1. Figure out what makes your work tick

“Think beyond just a desk and chair – what’s your ideal setup? Do you thrive with just a laptop, or do you require a dual-screen extravaganza? Are you a fan of a traditional stationary desk, or does a trendy stand-up desk align with your style?” says Bec. “Customising your workspace boosts productivity and enhances your comfort and overall satisfaction while working from home. “A huge game changer for me recently was a pop-up desk, for when I want to have the desk set up but also move around the house and cafe hop.”

2. Let there be light

“Maximising the natural light in your space has huge impact on your mood and overall health. Placing your desk near a window can help reduce eye strain and fatigue, making your workday more enjoyable,” says Bec.

“Design your office around available natural light if you can; this provides practical solutions that beautifully merge functionality and aesthetics.”

3. Clear the clutter, clear the mind

“It’s no secret that a tidy workspace fosters a clear and focused mind. In the chaos of remote work, decluttering your home office is essential to maintain productivity,” she says. “Set aside time either at the start or end of the day or week to reset and refresh your space, eliminating distractions and reducing mental clutter. You wouldn’t keep your desk messy at the office – so why do this at home?”

4. Personal touches

“Your home office should reflect your personality, preferences, and mood. Whether it’s playing your favourite music, lighting a scented candle, or keeping cherished photo frames and houseplants nearby, these little details go a long way for your space,” Bec says. “Give the place where you spend majority of your day some character and charm, turning it into a place where you’re not only productive but also vibing!” canberradaily.com.au
