From the editor Seeking refuge from the weekend heat, and from the weighty troubles of the world, I spent some time on Saturday eating a light lunch and simply sitting in the shade on the back veranda. As I relaxed, my attention was drawn by the hum of bees to a beautiful bush in bloom in the backyard. It was teeming with bees buzzing from one flower to the next, and several varieties of butterflies flitting between the branches. Meanwhile, a magpie warbled in the gum tree on the nature strip out front as two Eastern Rosellas chittered nearby. I delighted in feeling warm and drowsy, shaded from the noonday sun. At that moment, all was well in my world. It was a timely reminder of the benefits of making time to relax, to rest one’s body, mind and spirit, to set aside worries for a while, and to appreciate small wonders that might otherwise go unnoticed. Reasons to be grateful this past week include compelling live theatre in The Visitors at The Playhouse, catching up with friends at the Canberra and Region Wine Show tasting and trophy presentation, early morning walks in nature, captivating company at Heidi’s enchanting champagne soiree (which also raised funds for Cystic Fibrosis ACT), sunshine, rain, fresh mango, and backyard blessings.

Hannah Andrevski and Di Zivkovich are busy preparing for the Giant Charity Lego Sale at Albert Hall on Saturday 9 December.

Green Shed and Roundabout build community with charity sale

A

s colourful bricks pass through their hands, the Roundabout Canberra volunteers prepare for the return of the Giant Charity Lego Sale. The fundraiser will help the team on their mission to ensure all children in our region are given the best start in life when it takes over Albert Hall on Saturday 9 December. The Lego supplied by the Green Shed Canberra is collected at their multiple locations throughout the year. At the charity sale’s third instalment last year, Green Shed co-owners Charlie Bigg-Wither and Sandie Parkes decided on Roundabout as the beneficiary for all sales going forward. “We had such a great time working with the Green Shed last year for the sale,” says Hannah Andrevski, founder and CEO of Roundabout Canberra. “We just found that our ways of doing things and our values just aligned so nicely, it was just a really pleasant experience working alongside them.” The 2022 sale, which was held on a weekday night for just three hours, raised over $86,000. Ms Andrevski said the financial support is a huge benefit for the organisation as is spreading the word of what they do. “Lego is just so Roundabout,” she says. “It is such a well-made, long-term toy that can be enjoyed by people for years and years. It’s not something that 6

16 November 2023

ends up going to landfill or being disposed of, it’s the toy people hold on to and we love the joy that it sparks for people. It’s fitting on so many levels.” Roundabout has been busier than ever this year with their initiative of recycling baby and children’s items within our community. They have already helped as many children as they did in the entirety of 2022, and are only now hitting their busiest time of year. They expect to help 4,000 children in 2023, a signifcant increase on the 3,000 they helped last year. Ms Andrevski says the festive period puts additional financial pressure on families, whether they’re celebrating Christmas or other festivities, the time of year is costly. “The start of the new year seems to be a busy period for babies being born, we do find there’s a lot of orders being placed for new babies on the way,” she says. “Typically in Canberra, January is a fairly quiet work period. Some services find they have a lot of staff on leave so they really want to make sure that the families they are supporting are well supported before they head off.” While sorting through more than 1.5 tonnes of donated Lego, the volunteers remove anything that is off brand, which goes to another toy recycling program. “One of the tubs we tipped out had a really special, almost fully built [Lego] grand piano … that

actually plays music,” says Di Zivkovich, Volunteer and Social Services Coordinator. “We’ve worked hard to resurrect that and we will have it available.” Complete sets were in hot demand last time and there will be more than 500 this year. Around 200 of those are new and unopened, while others include vintage and collector sets. “We’ve got a few quite high-value Ninjago City sets that have several thousand pieces in a set, they’re from maybe five or ten years ago,” smiles Ms Zivkovich. “Then from the ‘70s and ‘80s, we’ve got a lot of rare sets including castle sets, knights sets, pirate ships and lots of really interesting sets – I’ve learnt a lot about Lego this year.” The half-built sets proved to be a hit last year. Ms Zivkovich says they can’t bring themselves to crush someone’s hard work and creativity, so they will be up for sale as is. Small unfinished sets and unguided creations will be in the tubs, whereas bigger incomplete sets, like half a Millennium Falcon, will be on tables included in the $30 per kg price tag. Boxes are priced separately. Another sought-after commodity is minifigs. This year, they’ve separated some of the rare and special figurines for people to find easily, while there will also be plenty scattered among the large clam shells. “We plan on releasing a list as we did last year with all of the sets available to purchase … we will also have a list of all the minifigures that will be available,” Ms Zivkovich says. “It was appreciated by the avid Lego collectors last year, a lot of people turned up with their highlighted lists printed out of exactly what they wanted.” Visitors last year were a mix of Lego enthusiasts, casual builders, and families coming to let their children pick out some different pieces. Duplo and Lego merchandise were also big hits, and both are back this time. Listening to the feedback received after last year’s sale, the event has been moved to a Saturday and the hours extended. “A lot of people really enjoyed that experience of sorting through the loose Lego and picking out the bits and pieces that they wanted. That takes some people quite a lot of time and we don’t want people to feel rushed,” says Ms Andrevski. Shoppers will also have access to various food options. “We’ll have a sausage sizzle, a cake stall, some other vendors there selling food and drinks so people can have a snack and go back to their sorting,” smiles Ms Andrevski. WITH BILL STEFANIAK AM RFD FORMER ACT OPPOSITION LEADER

No place for hate in Australia First, let me congratulate Albo on signing a treaty with Tuvalu that ensures Australia will take all its residents if Tuvalu sinks under the sea as a result of climate change. Indeed, I think we need to extend the same offer to any other threatened South Pacific nation. They will be good migrants, and I believe we have a duty to them. I actually agree with part of a letter by correspondent Omar Mohammed in last week’s magazine. He is indeed correct in saying I am extremely biased in my comments on Hamas – for good reason. I regard them, like I regarded Adolf Hitler and his Nazis and Joseph Stalin and his NKVD, as vicious, murderous, evil monsters who need to be destroyed before we can have true peace. I would love to see the day when Iran’s evil influence, which caused this war, ceased, and the narrow-minded Jihadists who have contempt for the long-suffering people of Palestine and Israel, were rejected by the mass of ordinary Palestinians, and a true two-state solution could progress. Israel then needs,

8

16 November 2023

in my view, to withdraw all its provocative settlements on the West Bank (or suitable territorial adjustments made between the West Bank Authorities and Israel), and the Palestinians to agree to recognise Israel’s right to exist within secure borders. I think the protagonists would be amazed at just how good a true and lasting peace could be to all parties. It is very worrying to me to see the useful idiots of the Australian Left all come out and support Hamas. They invariably have no idea of what it is that they are supporting. I encourage readers to read the article in last Thursday’s Australian by famous Lebanese Muslim Australian doctor Jamal Rifi. His thoughts are with Abdul, a 12-year-old Palestinian boy who lives in Gaza, who was being treated in an Israeli hospital for a severe deformity that cannot be fixed in Gaza. Dr Rifi worries about what will happen to young Abdul because of the war. Dr Rifi became famous for standing up to Muslim extremist clerics pushing Islamic State

in Western Sydney in 2014. He had a wonderful calming effect on the hotheads within his community. I will make a suggestion. It would be great if Dr Rifi and other sensible moderate Australian Muslim leaders, together with local Jewish leaders, the PM and Peter Dutton, and federal and state MPs for the local areas, organised a public meeting in Lakemba, committed to an end to violence and hate speech, and affirmed the fact we are all Australians first and foremost. If a prominent member of the local Muslim community could hold an Israeli flag, and a local Jewish rabbi could hold a Palestinian flag (and Albo and his parliamentary colleagues could hold the national flag and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags), it would send a powerful message. I think moderate Muslim Australians would like it, as would Australia’s Jewish community. It would marginalise the extreme Hamas supporters, and send a strong message of multicultural solidarity in this great country of ours.

International TV series being filmed in Canberra Canberra is taking a big step towards being on the map as a film industry destination with filming of international TV show, Austin, now underway. Produced by one of Australia’s leading production companies, Northern Pictures, the comedy-drama is scheduled to screen on ABC TV and ABC iView next year. Written and created by Darren Ashton, Ben Miller, Lloyd Woolf, Joe Tucker, Adam Zwar and Kala Ellis, the production features a starstudded English and Australian cast. Beloved British film and screen actors Ben Miller (Bridgerton) and Sally Phillips (Bridget Jones’s Diary, Veep) take centre stage, while Aussie favourites Gia Varides (Strictly Ballroom, My Big Fat Greek Wedding) and Roy Billing (Underbelly, Jack Irish) are first-grade support. The lead role and title character, Austin, is played by break-out star of Love on the Spectrum, Michael Theo, in his first acting role. Dr Holly Trueman, CEO of Screen Canberra,

10

says the production is practising accurate representation of having a neurodivergent person playing a neurodivergent character. In the aftermath of a social media frenzy, children’s author Julian Hartswood’s (Miller) career seems to be over, as is that of his illustrator and wife, Ingrid (Phillips). However, hope comes in the form of a new family member, Austin (Theo), Julian’s neurodivergent son he wasn’t aware he had. Will embracing this new family be the key to coming back from controversy? Julian plans to find out, but will soon discover Austin is no pushover. Shooting for the eight-part comedy series is expected to take 28 days in Canberra and another week in England. However, Dr Trueman says that crews have been in town for weeks preparing for shooting, boosting the local economy by wardrobe shopping in local retailers, while local food trucks have been feeding the stars and crew. “The ones who don’t live in Canberra are

staying in hotels – there’s a huge flow-on benefit for the economy,” she says. Looking at the long game, Dr Trueman says that having our beautiful city showcased on screens across the country and the world could also boost tourism. “Once it finally gets onto screen as well, with Canberra so prominent, I think back to The Code, when it was on air you just thought ‘Gosh, Canberra looks so beautiful’,” she says. hat do candles, chocolates and earrings all have in common? Well, besides making lovely gifts, these are the top three things people are heading to local Canberra retailer, POP Canberra, for ahead of the Christmas shopping rush. If these gifts don’t float your boat, there’s a whole lot more to choose from at POP, as they’re now home to over 250 Canberra region makers with an astounding range of quality gifts. POP Canberra’s Founder, Gabe Trew, says the key to a meaningful Christmas gift is keeping it local. He says throughout his time in business with POP over the past five years, the business has supported more than 800 small businesses who have together made an estimated $5 million through selling with POP. The ultimate goal, of course, is to support local makers and creators, and when people buy their products, they are supporting a genuine small maker, artist or creator from many different age groups, backgrounds

and walks of life. “Supporting local is showing a commitment to the soul of our community and allowing Canberra to continue being a national leader of small business and creative industry,” Gabe says. One local maker POP Canberra has supported over the past year demonstrates just how much of a big impact being supported by the local community can have. Amanda Stevens is a local Canberra region jewellery maker who credits POP Canberra with helping her sustain her business, LLL Designs, through a really difficult time in her life. Living with a chronic illness, Amanda creates her own earrings from her home and is passionate about making something truly unique for the local community. Amanda makes one-of-a-kind, fun, happy and eye-catching earrings and specialty items. omeone said to me once that gratitude was like having windows in a room. When I questioned this, he explained that if you are in a room with no windows, you are not aware of the beauty of the scenery beyond the walls, but if you have windows, you can experience the pleasure of the view. He said gratitude is the quality of thought that makes you aware of the good that already surrounds you. There is always good. Taking time to appreciate it and say ‘Thank you’ enriches our lives. “Research suggests that being grateful and expressing gratitude towards others can improve our

happiness and quality of life. Gratitude enhances empathy, improves physical health, mental wellbeing, quality of sleep, self-esteem, and also has the capacity to reduce stress. Identifying what you’re grateful for, especially during challenging times, can help foster resilience and improve our wellbeing.” – Stronger Together – Expressing Gratitude, Tanya O’Shea, Managing Director, IMPACT Community Services. Gratitude is a quality of love. Love is that quality that makes the world work right. When we make time for giving gratitude for the large and small things in our lives, then we are doing our part in making the world a better place while

enhancing our own lives. That simple act of saying ‘Thank you’ and counting our blessings enriches. Mary Baker Eddy, the Founder of Christian Science, encourages us to live the gratitude we feel. She writes on page 3 of her textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures: “Are we really grateful for the good already received? Then we shall avail ourselves of the blessings we have, and thus be

fitted to receive more. Gratitude is much more than a verbal expression of thanks. Action expresses more gratitude than speech.” Please join us in giving thanks for the good in our lives and the blessings received at our Thanksgiving Service at 6.15pm on Thursday 23 November – corner of Macquarie & Bligh Streets, Barton (christiansciencecanberra.com).

The Canberra charity we never want to need – but just might According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics’ most recent Prisoners in Australia report, as at June 2022, 77 per cent of the ACT’s then 381 prisoners had already served at least one prior prison term. This is the highest reincarceration rate of all Australian states and territories, with South Australia and Victoria boasting the lowest figures at 53 per cent. Of those 381 ACT detainees, five per cent were women. Had it not been for Prisoners Aid ACT, ‘Leonie’, mother of three, and now in her early 30s, believes she would, once again, have been one of them. Speaking from the office of Prisoners Aid ACT at the newly renovated Magistrates Court, Leonie describes how a violent ex-partner, the father of her eldest child, introduced the young mother to drugs, and administered her ‘first hit’. As a result, this child was permanently removed from her care at the age of six months; the now nine-year-old lives with Leonie’s parents. 12

“Looking back, I cannot believe I chose a man over my child,” Leonie says. Six years later, Leonie found herself in another relationship characterised by drug use and with two more small children. Leonie had been given a suspended sentence arising from some initial charges; however, she breached that, and was remanded in custody in the ACT for three and a half months in 2019. During this time, her two youngest children, aged three months and two years, were placed in foster care. “My baby was only three months old when I went in. It was really hard. But it was a blessing in disguise, as it was the kick I needed. You don’t know what you’ve got till it’s gone. I took them so for granted.” Leonie was released in December 2019. “It was daunting getting out,” she says. “I had no keys or anything as you come straight from prison to court. From the first experience I had coming in here and speaking to Glen [Tibbets, the fulltime manager], he’s offered me support, a chat, coffee, food, and bus tickets when I needed to come in here for court.” Glen Tibbets was once “a street kid myself”. “It is the children who feel it the most,” he says. “We do what we can to minimise the likelihood of the children of detainees offending themselves, ending up in the justice system, or self-harming, or, most tragically, killing themselves.” (continued page 14) canberradaily.com.au

s the Capital Region Farmers Market heads out to GIO Stadium in Bruce for their ‘Away Game’ next Saturday 25 November, they’ll be supporting more than the many farmers, producers and makers joining them. Fitting for a Market being held at Canberra’s biggest sporting arena, GIO Stadium which is home of the Canberra Raiders Rugby League team, the Market will be supporting grassroots Rugby League at their Away Game. “The Market is very engrained with local food suppliers, supporting the families of so many local and regional farmers and, of course, getting high quality produce to Canberrans with super low food miles,” says Capital Region Farmers Market manager, Sarah Power. “Sport is something we’re not as closely involved with, so for our special Away Game Market at the Stadium, we thought why not support a local sporting team, the Belconnen United Sharks Under 14s Rugby

League team in their endeavours to really kick some goals,” Sarah smiles. The Market will sponsor the Belconnen United Sharks for their tour of the NSW South Coast in 2024. “Our support is not one-sided; the team is definitely supporting the Market too! The team’s players will be on hand to assist Market shoppers by helping with bags of groceries on the day. And we hope many Belconnen families will join us. “It’s another way that the Market supports local community projects via its founder, the Rotary Club of Hall, and we hope this can be the first of many sporting partnerships with local clubs,” Sarah says. The Belconnen United Sharks Under 14s will also take part in the entertainment of the Market’s Away Game by running a ball passing workshop so that kids and families can join in. Away Game will also feature live musicians and entertainment, as well as face painting and badge making for the kids, making it an enjoyable Saturday morning outing for families. news (from page 12) Mr Tibbets commenced with Prisoners Aid ACT in 2017. His office at the Magistrates Court is open to clients five days per week, and he is assisted by casual staff members. The charity’s president, Dr Caroline Doyle, says, “There is also a part-time staff member who has an office in the Visitor Entry Area at the Alexander Maconochie Centre (AMC), and is present for around four days per week, and is assisted by our casual staff members. Clients attend both our offices, either in person or by phone.” Over the last financial year, Prisoners Aid ACT staff had 3,186 contacts with clients, including 1,080 in-person contacts across their offices at the Magistrates Court and the AMC. The services they provide include emotional and family support, travel subsidies for family members to visit detainees, bus tickets, emergency accommodation, essentials cards, assistance with power bills, training courses, release packs, Food Bank membership, clothing, and birth certificates. According to an ACT Corrective Services spokesperson, “Prisoners Aid is a valuable service

which provides a range of different supports to people who have spent time in custody.” Prisoners Aid ACT recently celebrated 60 years of support to detainees, those released, families of detainees, and those involved in the criminal justice system, at a fundraising dinner where $10,000 was raised. Whilst Dr Doyle and Mr Tibbets expressed gratitude for the ACT Government funding provided, “this grant is basically the equivalent of a senior public servant’s wage,” says Dr Doyle. The shortfall is significant. “We need around another $150k annually,” adds Mr Tibbets. Funding has also been provided by local charity organisation, Hands Across Canberra. Both Dr Doyle and Mr Tibbets recognise that public opinion is against them when Canberrans are choosing where to place their charitable dollars. “And it’s not a popular topic for everyone compared to other charities,” Dr Doyle says. “There is potentially a blame that people place on those we support. Yet there is a lack of understanding as to how people end up in prison.” Leonie agrees. “I think that people who have been involved with Prisoners Aid ACT are less

There is also support to help you get to court so you don’t breach because of practical things. It has definitely helped me.” What are the chances of Leonie reoffending? “Zero,” she says. You can help Prisoners Aid ACT by donating via their GiveNow page or by contacting the team to volunteer. Canberra’s lavish love affair with public art If you commute along Drakeford Drive, you may notice painters putting a fresh lick of orange paint on Moths Ascending the Capital, one of 114 public art pieces in Canberra collectively worth $19 million. The ACT Government, on our behalf, has been collecting art for our public spaces for 60 years and it comes with an annual repair and maintenance budget of $165,000. Moths Ascending the Capital (by artist Alexander Knox) hasn’t had a touch-up of clear coat for 12 years, so, after relentless UV exposure under Tuggeranong’s clear blue skies, a new coat of paint was due. Next on the maintenance list is a technological overhaul of that iconic, light-flashing Canberra institution, Illumicube, by artist Kerry Simpson (at the back of the Canberra Centre). The glass cube hasn’t been touched by conservators since it was commissioned in 1988. Canberrans may recall that the coloured lights used to change in response to sound but the sensor was de-activated years ago to stop the cacophony of car horns late at night. But cheer up, Canberrans! Illumicube is about to get some new LED lighting that will be programmable, rather than just random flashing lights. The high-tech, flashy Illumicube was designed to commemorate 25 years of electricity supply in Canberra (exciting stuff) but the lights inside are just old, used traffic lights. artsACT Project officer for public art, Angie McDuff, said the technology back in 1988 “was pretty cutting edge for that time”. “We’re building a new interior structure for that work that will house some new LED lighting that will be programmable,” Ms McDuff said. “It won’t be sensored, but we will be able to have more interaction with it.” An interesting anecdote that accompanies the old, sound16

16 November 2023

activated Illumicube: apparently it was occasionally used for children with non-verbal autism to encourage them to vocalise in order to activate the lights. Down the road from Illumicube is easily the most high-maintenance sculpture in Canberra’s public art collection – the painted doll and carousel dogs called The Other Side of Midnight (by artist Anne Ross). With kids climbing over it daily with sticky hands, it’s a conservator’s nightmare. “That ends up with ice cream spilt on it and black school shoe scuff marks that we’re constantly clearing off,” Ms McDuff said. One public artwork that doesn’t invite the public to engage with it but still invites a lot of public engagement, is Belconnen’s Owl by artist Bruce Armstrong. Its phallic appearance once attracted a lot of “colourful” graffiti but over time the novelty has worn off. “That was just one person that kept vandalising the Belco owl and obviously thought it was funny and just kept doing it,” Ms McDuff said. “Once that person stopped we haven’t had any graffiti on that one in a long time. It did take a while, we really just had to wait for that person to move on and find something else to do.” Two CCTV cameras have been installed for good measure. Surprisingly, Canberra experiences hardly any vandalism of its public art – only seven instances last year. Perhaps we are a cultured bunch after all. The role of public art is to humanise the built environment, and Canberra started its journey into public art in 1961, with Ethos, located outside the ACT Legislative Assembly. It was commissioned before self government and is the only heritagelisted work in Canberra’s public art collection. “That is one that we pay a lot more attention to,” Ms McDuff said.

Cultural objects handler Yuri Humeniuk (left), artist/sculptor Dan Lorrimer, and lighting designer/sound advice Brett Fraser inside Illumicube. A new lighting system will be installed in early 2024. Photo: supplied.

Gillian Mitchell from Conservation Works cleaning the bronze sculpture of Laurie Daley, by artist Peter Corlett, at GIO Stadium. The statue was corrosion treated and given a coating of microcrystalline wax then hit with the blow torch to melt it into the bronze. Photo: supplied.

“It was the first public commission for Canberra. It was partly crowdsourced by the public. The Chamber of Commerce raised the money selling miniature versions of Ethos. People could purchase it for £50 ($1,600 in today’s currency).” There are also a couple of sculptures that the ACT Government didn’t commission but ended up adopting anyway. GIO Stadium used to own the bronze statues of Mal Meninga (by artist Cathy Weiszmann) and Laurie Daley (by artist Peter Corlett) but artsACT took them on as assets earlier this year. Now Laurie Daley gets a wax regularly (along with Menzies, Curtin and Chifley).

“The amount of detail that goes into it – a local conservator was literally cleaning the teeth with the toothbrush,” Ms McDuff said. So, what is the biggest wear and tear on our public art? Bird poo. It’s pigeons versus statues. “One of the biggest jobs that we’ve had is Wide Brown Land at the Arboretum,” Ms McDuff said. “There was a family of magpies that used to sit on that and it did actually cause a lot of damage to the steel, leaving really bad staining on it. In 2017, we had to put an entire bird net over the whole work while we treated it and put a coating on it that would make it easier to clean.” - Georgia Curry canberradaily.com.au

Capital Psychology Clinic creating a positive impact In business together for more than seven years, Directors of Capital Psychology Clinic, Dr Eryn Davies and Jenna Keen, won the Social Impact of the Year Award at the recent 2023 Canberra Women in Business Awards. They are proud to work with their award-winning team to champion one another and support the Canberra community. Tell us about your career paths and what led you to start your business. Following our graduations from University of Canberra, we both began working in the public mental health system, Eryn with a focus on trauma and neurodivergent populations, and Jenna with a focus and love for perinatal work and learning/ educational development, before meeting and deciding we would love to run a practice together. We both share common values and goals of serving our community while also providing a highquality workplace environment for

psychologists, in response to the high level of burnout in our field. Tell us about your practice and what differentiates it. Our practice has been established for over seven years now, and we continue to have supportive senior clinicians who have been with us from the beginning, along with inspiring younger clinicians. The variation of experience and fields of practice and expertise on our team continues to amaze us, with clinicians being experts in fields such as perinatal care, trauma and first responder care, gender/LGBQTI,

neurodivergence including Autism and ADHD, and specific assessment experts in Autism, ADHD, learning disorders and giftedness. The reason this is so impressive is because our clinicians don’t just “do” this work but have special interests and expertise in these areas, providing high levels of care for adults, teens and children, which we are so proud of. We think these days, businesses can become too focused on providing monotonous care, with maximum back-to-back sessions and little time out for support and team cohesion. As directors, we see our primary role as looking after our team, clinicians and administration, so they can then provide a high level of care and also feel very satisfied with their work. Our team is a mini work family who love to celebrate together and always champion each other to learn and achieve. We believe our focus as directors on our team, rather than just the business, makes an enormous difference in our company. What does winning the Canberra Women in Business Social Impact of the Year Award mean to you? This award means so many things for us and our team. We are honoured to have all our hard work acknowledged and are so excited to share this win with our team, who were all present on the night.

18

16 November 2023

Our current team is such a professional, hardworking and supportive group of individuals, showing that our strategies and goals have successfully married up with our values to develop a team of unbelievable individuals who work as a whole together to help our community and also to support and champion each other. This award allows us to celebrate and thank our team for being the wonderful clinicians and admin superstars that they are, while continuing to keep strategies and planning forward focused, on the development of more community and team focused support, with the ultimate goal of expanding our reach and impact. It was wonderful to spend time with the other award winners on the night, to learn about their inspiring journeys and plans. When you get a group of motivated business women together, there is no stopping us. Any plans for the future you’d like to share? We are certainly working on some exciting plans and strategies for the future, to increase the type of support and reach within our community, and also to expand opportunities for our team. At this stage, we will keep them under wraps, but 2024 is going to be an exciting year! To find out more about Canberra Women in Business, visit cwb.org.au canberradaily.com.au

to the editor Israel a valid UN Member state

The Middle East is complex. However, Omar Mohammad (CW 9 November p18) socially distances from objective reality. Britain didn’t “promise Israel to the Jews”. Israel was created by United Nations Resolution 181, which sought to establish both an Arab and a Jewish State in the region. The Jews accepted this, but the Arabs did not. The 1948 war was commenced and waged by Arabs against Jews. The Hagganah and the Irgun paramilItaries did not “inflict unspeakable horrors against the Palestinians”. Their terrorism was against the British, and their role was to carry out reprisals against the attacking Arab militias. There was not and never has been a people called the “Palestinians”. The region has been home to both Jews and Muslims,

Druze, Christians and Orthodox for thousands of years. The concept of “Palestine” was coined in 1988 at the Algiers Palestine National Council Meeting. Whilst both sides have erred, Israel exists as a valid UN Member state, satisfying the definitions of the Montevideo Convention. Palestine does not. The “Palestinian” Arabs have had numerous offers to become a state. They have consistently refused. Even when they were given Gaza, in 2005, they chose to destroy the existing infrastructure, and target Israeli civilians, rather than establish a state. Could Mohammad explain why it is apparently OK to violently enter Israel, murder 1400 non-combatants and children, and abduct 240 hostages into tunnels built with aid money intended to benefit residents of Gaza, but stolen by Hamas? - Athol Morris, Forde

The Palestine conflict

Further to Bill Stefaniak’s oped (CW 26 October p6), the genesis of the Palestine issue lies with the Balfour Declaration in 1917. Lord Balfour, urged by a Jewish associate, led the British government to announce its support for a Jewish homeland in Palestine, in other words, a religious state within the Palestine nation. At that time, Palestinian Jews represented a small minority, some 10 per cent, of the Palestine population. The concept came to fruition following the Holocaust of WWII. The state of Israel was

inflicted upon the Palestinians, by force of armed Zionists, under the emotional hubris of “providing a homeland for Jews”. During this episode, nearly one million Palestinians were dispossessed of their homeland. This territory grab continues to this day. The present conflict can only be resolved if Israel is obliged to surrender all hitherto illegally taken Palestinian territory, and have its territorial ambitions confined to the 1947 original borders. Israel will never escape the view that it is a cancer in the state of Palestine. - Mike Alves, Phillip

This is an excellent weekend for improving your domestic circumstances and, if you work from home, to spruce up your home office. A change of routine could be ideal. You’ll appreciate a health or a beauty boost, or a new look.

CAPRICORN DEC 22 – JAN 20

CANCER JUN 22 – JUL 22

You’ll enjoy a reunion and socialising. If you’re renovating at home or moving, this could turn out well, as long as you research circumstances. A financial transaction may be significant. It’s a good time to focus on building a happy home.

Working Cancerians may be busy. Someone you work or associate with may be a little distracted, so be sure to be practical yourself. Romance could flourish but you must avoid seeing things idealistically. A change of routine will be well-deserved.

AQUARIUS JAN 21 – FEB 19

LEO JUL 23 – AUG 23

You will discover a little more about whether your plans will work, especially those that are long-term and may involve considerable creativity or planning. It’s a good time to make tracks at work and financially, so take the initiative.

This is a good weekend to make agreements and plans with those you love. But it’s vital you base long-term decisions on facts, and do not make assumptions, especially financially and in your personal life. You’ll enjoy sprucing up home décor.

PISCES FEB 20 – MAR 20

VIRGO AUG 24 – SEPT 23

There are many ideal astrological aspects this weekend. This is a good time for making a commitment to a person or a plan and for creating a solid base for yourself. Just avoid being easily distracted and having overtly high expectations.

Consider your values and priorities: what would you most like to do? If you’re not doing it, this is the time to make plans to do so. You’ll enjoy an ego boost this weekend and a romantic event but must avoid overspending.

ARIES MAR 21 – APR 20

LIBRA SEPT 24 – OCT 23

You may receive good news from the past, concerning work or health. A joint venture can progress. A financial matter will deserve your attention. Romance will flourish and if you’re single, you may even meet someone compatible this weekend.

You’ll find out if you have over or under-estimated circumstances. It’s a good week for health and beauty treats. Finances will be a focus: some will have a large financial outlay; others will receive a financial boost or good work news.

Erindale Cakery Bakery, where everything’s made fresh on site every night Erindale Cakery Bakery owners, Clinton and Shubana Sheehan, have been in the business for 13 years. In the industry for 26 years, Clinton has been baking since he left school in Young NSW at the age of 17. He started his apprenticeship at the Young Hot Bake and continued to gain experience from multiple bakeries around NSW and the ACT. Clinton had a family business in Young with his parents before the opportunity arose for him to purchase Erindale Bakery in Canberra. He had stayed close friends with the previous owners as he had worked with them in the past. Within a few months of purchasing the business, he closed it temporarily to do a full refurbishment and new signage/name to put his own stamp on the shop.

Since then, we have built it up and made it into the successful business it is today. Over the years, we have won numerous awards for our products and have also won Bakery of the Year in ACT and NSW, and Outstanding Bakery/Cake Shop in the ACT. Everything made in the Erindale Cakery Bakery is made fresh on site every night and always will be. If we can’t make it, we don’t bake it! We like to support Australia businesses as much as we can. We buy in all Australian products, for example, fresh apples from Orange, Australian grown sultanas and mixed peel, etc. All our Christmas baked goods are made from scratch and hand-finished in the bakery, from the pastries to the fillings. time out The Beatles come to Blamey Street For the past 21 years, the Blamey Street Big Band has been transporting audiences back to the jazz-infused swing tunes of the 1930s and ‘40s with their covers and reimaginings. Next on their hits with a twist list is the biggest boy band of all time in the sold-out Blamey Street Swings with The Beatles at Harmonie German Club on Saturday 18 November. “We have done an arrangement from every single Beatles album … There are so many fantastic tunes that work for big band tunes,” says Ian McLean, Blamey Street Big Band director of music. Adopting themes for their two main concerts of the year, Mr McLean says the group decided to join the throngs who have produced big band covers of The Beatles’ tracks over the years. It was by pure coincidence that the new Beatles song, Now and Then, was recently released. Already with numerous Beatles’ songs in their repertoire, he says the concert wasn’t too tricky to put together; in fact, there were plenty of tracks left over that wouldn’t fit in the two-hour timeslot. Some of the hits to be played include I Want to Hold Your

Hand, Should Have Known Better, and a Nina Simone inspired version of Penny Lane. “One of my favourite tunes of all time is Yesterday and there is a lovely version of Something in the Way She Moves,” Mr McLean says. Blamey Street Big Band was created by two big band musicians who had no place to play in Canberra and decided to start their own big band. Soon, they found other musicians and a director of music in well-respected conductor, Mr McLean, who had previously been the director of music of Duntroon Royal Military College Band and the CEO of the Canberra Symphony Orchestra. Rehearsals started in a school hall on Blamey Crescent in Campbell. “With the association of the Basin Street Blues, we couldn’t call it the Blamey Crescent Big Band, so it had to be the Blamey Street Big Band,” says Mr McLean. Now showing The Killer (MA15+)

A professional assassin (Michael Fassbender) narrates his strict professional and nihilistic life philosophies as he meticulously stakes out a Parisian hotel room and methodically prepares for a hit. Passing the time, the cold, calculating and minimalist Killer practices yoga, eats, listens to The Smiths to lower his heart rate, and talks to his handler. Soon, however, the Killer botches the job, and races to reunite with his girlfriend in waiting. Based on a French graphic novel, directed by the meticulous David Fincher (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) and starring the cold, intelligent and emotionless Fassbender, the movie is a stylish retread of classic assassin movie tropes. Again, an assassin has a crisis of morality, which proves fatal in their line of work. No longer fit for the game, the assassin

must fight his former employers and colleagues who are representative of all their sins remembered, in the hope of enjoying a peaceful retirement. Apart from the Killer’s penchant for an ‘80s band, there is very little to his disciplined character. It is surprising then to learn that such a person, who eschews religious or political allegiances that may sway from his dedication to his job, would hold such an obvious vulnerability in the form of a significant other. While the workman-like approach to dismantling his predicament is intriguing and satisfying, barring some Nietzsche-like musings about the point of it all, there is little to add to this well-trodden genre. Verdict: A faultless production of a well-worn story. Fans of the genre, and Fincher, may get more out of it. 3 stars. - Luke McWilliams themovieclub.net

B

elieving trees are important for our visual and mental landscapes, ceramicist Josephine Townsend invites you to connect with the Colours of the Forest at Humble House Gallery, from 25 November to 24 December. The artist creates evocative pieces influenced by the concept of shinrin yoku, or forest bathing – a meditation in nature. With both arboreal and cylindrical forms, she showcases the spirit of trees – their texture, splendour, and relaxing auras that viewers are encouraged to embrace. Through her pieces, Ms Townsend aims to capture the joy and calm that nature brings, which we are often too busy to notice. She hopes that visitors will take time to notice the small details and embrace nature.

This week, Michael Popple highlights three amazing stories from the 20th century. You can find more of Michael’s book reviews on his blog, unseenlibrary.com Mr Einstein’s Secretary by Matthew Reilly

However, Hanna is destined for greater adventure, and she soon finds herself spying on the Nazi regime. But nothing in Hanna’s life is what it seems, especially when it leads her through the most dangerous events in history. This was an outstanding and utterly enthralling novel from acclaimed Australian author Matthew Reilly. However, the defecting pilot has his own agenda, and soon Kaz is forced to contend with a deadly enemy who knows all his tricks. Former astronaut turned writer Chris Hadfield produces a brilliant sequel to his debut novel, The Apollo Murders. Cleverly utilising Hadfield’s experiences as a pilot, The Defector is a compelling thriller with a fantastic story.

WITH KAREN AND GILLIAN FROM COLLEEN’S LINGERIE AND SWIMWEAR

The Pause: Why your perimenopausal breasts need some extra love If, like me, you’re in the last hoorah of your 40s, then you’ll no doubt be seeing the word ‘Perimenopause’ everywhere you look. Who’d have thought that riding the hormonal rollercoaster of womanhood could be so hip. Yep, menopause is trending. The great news about this surge in exposure for peri/menopausal women, is that there are endless sources of information and education for those of us wondering ‘What the hell is happening to me?’ When it comes to breast health, the more you’re informed and aware of what to expect, or have explanations for what you’re experiencing, the more supported you’ll be. So, just what is going on with our breasts as we enter and navigate menopause? As our cycles change and our hormones surge and decrease like a tidal pull, you may simply notice your breasts more. They may feel more sensitive and tender; much like the soreness of PMS, but at random times in your cycle. Wearing a well-fitted

bra can help to ease some of this hormonal sensitivity, keeping your breasts comfortable and supported. Wearing the wrong size bra will only increase breast discomfort. After 40, the importance of getting to know your breasts through regular self-examination and breast screening increases. Your breasts may feel denser and go through stages of feeling lumpy. As with all changes in your breasts, if you notice anything out of the ordinary, chat with your GP. Often most confronting for women, our breasts can swell and increase in size due to hormonal changes and tendency to hang on to a little bit more weight through menopause – seemingly overnight! If the bra you’ve always worn suddenly becomes tighter around the band, the underwires start pinching and the cups become too shallow, the correct size bra will be a blessed relief and help to ease the likelihood of your Cooper’s ligaments stretching and the now collagen depleted skin losing elasticity and firmness. Much like the love

affair you’ll begin to have with elastic-waist pants, a well-fitted bra will help keep your focus off how uncomfortable you might be feeling and be able to get on with your day (because the mood swings and rage are bad enough without adding a tight bra to the mix!). Now you’ve sorted your bra out, what else can you do to support yourself? Our Karen has ditched the caffeine and replaced her morning cuppa with the amazing Peri Chai Latte by SheBANG! wellbeing

WITH ASSISTANT PROFESSOR DR VIVIENNE LEWIS, CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGIST AT UNIVERSITY OF CANBERRA

Guilt – friend or foe? Guilt is a normal emotional response we have when we feel that our actions have had a negative outcome and we might have compromised our values and morals somehow. For example, being mean to someone and them being hurt by this or forgetting to follow through with a promise. It occurs when we might cheat at something and feel bad about this or we forget something that’s important to someone else, like a birthday. Guilt is something we learn to feel from a very young age and is actually how we learn to have morals and values. It helps us be a good human and be kind to others. Through parenting, we often learn what pleases others and what behaviour is valued and, conversely, what behaviour is wrong or makes people feel bad. Thinking that we might feel guilty if we do something wrong often makes us think through our actions and helps us be kind to others. For example, it’s guilt that stops us intentionally hurting someone.

However, sometimes we can feel guilty when we haven’t done anything wrong or when our intentions were good but there was a bad outcome. For example, where we might feel we have let someone down, but we didn’t have any control over this, or we had to put our own needs first. My clients commonly talk about feeling guilty for putting their needs first, such as saying no to an invitation to see a friend because they’re tired, or not helping someone move to a new house because they have family commitments. People can feel quite distressed when they feel guilty, and this can be detrimental to our wellbeing, especially if we feel guilty a lot of the time. In really severe cases, a person can feel guilty when they see others suffering and they can’t do anything to help, for example, when you see people suffering in a war zone. People can feel unworthy of good things, such as when they perceive someone else might be more deserving than they.

Feeling guilty all the time can lead to poor mental health, so we need to learn to be kind to ourselves and think about our feelings of guilt in ways that help us behave in more positive ways towards others and ourselves. Here are some tips: • Ask yourself why you feel guilty and is that rational? If you could look at your behaviour from the perspective of someone else, how might you view it in a more forgiving way? • Be willing to learn from your mistakes. • Talk to someone about your feelings so you have an outlet for them and you’re not ruminating or overthinking them. • If you have done wrong, apologise and be willing to admit your wrongdoing. Facing your fears of rejection by others can be powerful. A reasonable person who understands our sorrow usually forgives. • Forgive yourself and move on. Try not to dwell on mistakes that have been made. Do something to help you put it past you and get on with your day.
