Abbeyfield: A companionable haven for seniors Since 1989, the Abbeyfield house at Ainslie, “a share house for older people”, has provided long-term accommodation for seniors, alleviating social isolation and helping residents to maintain independence in a semi-supportive environment with privacy and security, operations manager Nancy Trajcevski says. Abbeyfield is a not-for-profit community housing provider. The model began in the UK in the 1950s. After the war, Richard Carr-Gomm OBE, an army major who became Britain’s first male home help, realised that there was little housing for ex-servicemen, and that many of his clients were lonely. He used part of his army pension to buy a house in East London – the first of 100 across the UK and 400 worldwide, including in Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, Belgium, and Poland. Judy Dunster brought the movement to Australia, and opened the first house in 1986, in Melbourne. Three years later, Hazel Hawke, wife of the prime minister, opened the Ainslie house, purpose-built as a joint venture between the ACT Housing Trust and Abbeyfield ACT.

Two other houses in Curtin and Garran provide assisted independent living for people with mild intellectual disabilities. The “supported accommodation” model allows older or mildly disabled people to remain independent while minimising problems that vulnerable people living alone can have, Mrs Trajcewski said. Each of the 10 Ainslie residents has their own bedsit and ensuite bathroom; they share the living areas, dining room, laundry, and garden. Every day, the residents gather for meals and conversation. “One of our main focuses is companionship: sitting around the dining-room table, having a chat in the lounge-room, watching [the quiz show] Letters and Numbers,” Mrs Trajcevski said. “It’s about being connected within their own community, but also having the independence to do what they want, when they want. Some of our residents still work or volunteer; some of them still visit their clubs and other organisations. So it’s like living in your own home, except you’re sharing with other people.” A housekeeper cooks lunch and dinner, and

cleans the common areas of the house, while on weekends, a cook serves two-course dinners. “Older people who live by themselves tend not to cook for themselves or have very nutritious meals,” Mrs Trajcevski said. Earlier this month, the Ainslie house held a special dining-in event to inaugurate its new dining room furniture: locally sourced timber tables and upholstered timber chairs, whose “at home” look and feel has transformed the room, Mrs Trajcewski said. Residents love living at Abbeyfield, Mrs Trajcevski said: “They leave and then they come back.” They appreciate the support and independence the facility provides. The house fee (rent) is based on 70 per cent of the pension, plus the government energy supplement and rent assistance. Abbeyfield currently has both vacancies in all three Canberra houses. If a person over the age of 55 is looking for somewhere safe to live and still maintain their independence, they can contact Abbeyfield on 03 9419 8222. Full story online.

Access denied: People with assistance animals have rights Heading to a friend’s house with her mother for lunch, Amanda Heal ordered a taxi just like any other time. The driver called and said they were ten minutes away; hearing the car pull up, Ms Heal and her Guide Dog, Sadie, made their way to the driveway. “I had Sadie’s leash in my left hand, she was in harness, and I reached out to run the back of my hand along the vehicle which then proceeded to reverse down the driveway and drive away as fast as he could.” Shocked by what had just happened, she couldn’t believe that the driver would not only leave without so much as a word but would move the car with Sadie so close to it. Ms Heal and her mother called another taxi, and the driver was appalled to hear what had occurred. Later, Ms Heal phoned Guide Dogs who asked if she would make a formal complaint that would be included in the new legislation. A motivational speaker, author and lived experience presenter for Guide Dogs NSW/ACT, Ms Heal says this wasn’t the first time she has experienced this kind of treatment. “I have had taxis, many years ago, drive up to me and then

reverse and drive away. I’ve been refused by a couple of Ubers in the past,” she says. No matter when or where it happens, a rejection and right to basic services affects the individual, especially when it is because of the assistance animal that accompanies them. “It’s quite upsetting, to be honest, because Sadie is my Guide Dog, she is my closest companion and when someone rejects Sadie, I feel like they are rejecting me as well. It’s personal.” Not only was that taxi driver’s behaviour to Ms Heal and Sadie unprofessional and in poor taste, but it was also was illegal under Commonwealth law. “Assistance animals can go anywhere, anytime – they can go rideshares, cafes, hospitals. There has to be a good reason for refusal, whether that’s behavioural or a hygiene issue, for instance, if a dog was covered in mud,” says Chris Mooney, senior director of Domestic Animal Services (DAS). Local author inspires young readers to follow their dreams One day you’re young with high hopes for the future – you’re going to change the world, you’re sure of it. Then, over time, that spark and passion start to dwindle; perhaps you won’t change the world, after all. A young Canberra author, Lochana Radaliyagoda, wants to ensure that no child loses their spark with her picture book, Feel the Flame. “I thought that a book was the best sort of media for children to become influenced by throughout their entire lives; I still read children’s books now and then, I love the illustrations. That’s why I wrote it.” Released last November by Little Steps Publishing, Feel the Flame tells the story of Princess Lana. The book lover realises there is something wrong with the way media portrays women in her kingdom. Believing that not all women need a man or should be pigeonholed, Lana sets out on a journey to learn how other places portray women. Learning about

influential women like Julia Gillard, Malala Yousafzai, Greta Thunberg and Ruth Bader Ginsburg further ignites the flame within the princess. “That passion for making a difference grew as well. The rest of the story is her using what she has learnt and using that flame within her to bring together a group of young people who fight for a better future,” says Lochana. At 17 years old, the young author has already been teaching traditional Sri Lankan dance at her mother’s dance studio for the past eight years. Over this time, she has noticed children aged three or four coming in with big dreams of becoming astronauts, ninjas and almost anything you could image. By the time they got to 13 or so, that fire had all but been extinguished; Lochana says their dreams and goals seemed to be drained out of them. “I didn’t like seeing their passions and their

drive sort of fade away because you tend to develop anxious thoughts as you grow and the effect of that is incredible. I wanted to lessen that; the story is about how a young person holds that fire and that passion close to their heart and continues to make that dream a reality.” Read an extended version at canberradaily.com.au Feel the Flame by Lochana Radaliyagoda is available for purchase at lochanaradaliyagoda.com - Jessica Cordwell

Luna was again the top name for cats in the ACT in 2023.

Canberra’s top baby and pet names, and library books Charlotte was the most popular Canberra baby girl’s name in 2023, for the fourth year running, sharing equal first with Amelia, risen from fourth position in 2022. Henry was the most popular baby boy’s name, on equal first with 2022’s favourite, Oliver. Charlotte has been in the top 10 baby names every year since 2003, and Henry has remained in the top 10 most popular names since 2016. The top 10 names feature a few ‘newcomers’ to the lists: Chloe, Eleanor, Violet, Harper, and Mia for girls; and Alexander, Oscar, Jack, Charlie, Hudson, and Muhammad for boys. 5,983 babies were registered in the ACT in 2023, a decrease from the 6,200 registered in 2022. (Perhaps lockdowns accounted for the higher birth rate?)

Top pet names

Meanwhile, Canberrans show a dogged determination to stick to the same pet names and breeds; anything else would be mildly catastrophic. In 2022, the most popular breeds of dog and cat were the cavoodle and the domestic short hair cat, and Luna was the most popular name for both species, according to ACT pet registrations. In 2023, once more, the cavoodle and the domestic short hair cat were the top breeds, and Luna the top name for cats. But dog owners opted for Charlie over Luna, which fell into second place. To celebrate the Australian women’s soccer team, 31 Canberrans named their dogs Matilda. Others chose movie- or book-themed names, including 10

Harry ‘Spotty’ Spotter, Joker, Sherlock, and Obi Woof Kenobi. Cat lovers, meanwhile, went for the grandiose: Barry Ratslayer Prince of Darkness, Captain Rascal Tusktooth, Vanity Fair, and Mushu the Magnificent Meowser.

From names to (book) titles…

A début novel of cooking and chemistry, Prince Harry’s memoirs of sibling rivalry and his frostbitten todger, and Anh Do’s children’s books were among the works most borrowed from ACT libraries in 2023. Lessons in Chemistry, a novel by Bonnie Garmus, was the most borrowed title from Libraries ACT. “Now also a television series, the book tells the story of a chemist in the 1960s who does not get the respect she deserves,” Tara Cheyne, ACT Minister for City Services, said. “She experiences an unexpected turn and starts hosting a famous cooking show. “The novel was the most popular hard copy adult fiction book and e-book at Libraries ACT. It had around 700 reservations from hungry library members who put in a request throughout the year to read the book.” Shortlisted for the ACT’s Book of the Year Awards, Bulldozed: Scott Morrison’s fall and Anthony Albanese’s rise by Niki Savva, a political journalist, was one of the five most borrowed non-fiction books. The most popular was Prince Harry’s Spare. Anh Do maintained his dominance over junior fiction. In 2022, he wrote all of the five most borrowed children’s books; in 2023, four of the five. Meredith Costain’s Diva Drama comes in at second. canberradaily.com.au

Park Proxi Gibraltar Bowral is a gracious hotel flanking the picturesque 18-hole Gibraltar golf course.

Getaway: Beautiful Bowral in the NSW Southern Highlands Veer off the Hume Highway just two hours northeast of Canberra to the charming town of Bowral in the beautiful NSW Southern Highlands. In 1820, Governor Macquarie praised the Highlands as redolent of ‘a fine, extensive pleasure ground’ of England; a haven to escape the summer heat and humidity of Sydney long before beachgoing became popular.

array of fresh and stewed fruits, yoghurt, cereals, baked goods and hot foods, tea and coffee. Our spacious room featured a continental king bed, large ensuite with dual shower heads, fluffy robes and all the mod cons, plus a balconette with views of the picturesque water hazard on the first hole. It’s blissfully quiet here; there’s no traffic noise apart from the occasional rumble of a passing train.

WHERE WE STAYED

Park Proxi Gibraltar Bowral, 7 Boronia St, Bowral NSW E: hello@parkproxibowral.com W: parkproxibowral.com

Around 4km from centre of town, sits Park Proxi Gibraltar Bowral, a sprawling two-storey 77-room hotel that flanks the picturesque 18-hole Gibraltar golf course. After checking in late afternoon on a sweltering Friday, we took advantage of the indoor pool to cool off before changing for dinner at the hotel’s casual and airy Observatory Restaurant. Our window seats overlooked the beautifully manicured course at sunset, the service was friendly and efficient, and the menu offered great selections. The comprehensive wine list includes numerous Southern Highland labels, which helps to promote and support the local industry. After dinner, we were invited to relax with a cocktail in hand at the intimate and cosy Harvey’s Bar. We returned to Observatory for buffet breakfast on Saturday and Sunday mornings, indulging in the 14

WHERE WE ATE

Harry’s on Green Lane is an enchanting eatery on the quaint lane beside Dirty Janes vintage emporium in Bowral. The vibe is chic European and the décor maximalist. It’s a feast for the eyes – and the food is equally enticing. My roasted spiced cauliflower with pomegranate was a picture on my plate and a party on my palate; likewise, my plus-one’s warm salad of oven roasted vegetables with miso sesame dressing was a visual and flavoursome delight. For dessert, we shared the poached pear in sweet red wine sauce paired with refreshing lemon sorbet instead of mascarpone. Perfect on a sweltering 38-degree day. This captivating bar offers an extensive list of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, teas and coffee.

Paste Australia’s signature dish: Pomelo and Moreton Bay bug salad.

A cool oasis for lunch or dinner any season. Open for lunch seven days from 12pm (weekend sittings 12pm and 2pm), and for dinner Friday and Saturdays from 6pm. Bookings essential. Harry’s on Green Lane, 17 Banyette Street, Bowral NSW W: harryswinebarbowral.com T: 02 4862 2883 Paste Australia is a hatted restaurant in Mittagong, owned by renowned Chef Bee Satongun, awarded Asias’s Best Female Chef by World’s 50 Best Restaurants, and owner of Thailand’s Micheline-starred culinary icon, Paste Bangkok, as well as Paste Laos. Chef Bee’s cuisine is based on traditional Thai dishes that she has “revived” by adapting some techniques and elements to incorporate fresh seasonal produce and appeal to local palates. We tried the set menu for two that included six dishes and jasmine rice for $105 per person – a brilliant suggestion and excellent value – paired with local Rieslings, chosen from a comprehensive wine list. Worth driving from Canberra just to dine here. Open Thursday to Monday (times vary) for dine in and takeaway (5.30-8.30pm). WHAT WE DID

The hometown of Sir Donald Bradman during his formative adolescent years, Bowral pays homage to the Australian cricket icon with the Bradman Museum and International Cricket Hall of Fame, which borders the heritage-listed Bradman Oval. Even if you’re not a cricket tragic, this is a fascinating place to while away an hour or a day. Guided group tours are available by prior arrangement, however, the layout, signage, displays and interactive elements are excellent, so you can confidently journey through the Museum at your own pace without a guide, exploring the evolution of the game and some of its greatest exponents, and be captivated by whatever takes your fancy. I was bowled over by the quality and variety of the exhibits. Be sure to check out the statue of Bradman and the Sir Donald Bradman roses in the gardens, and the picturesque oval where the legend’s cricketing career took off. Entry fees apply. Open 7 days 9am-4pm. Closed Good Friday and Christmas Day.

Prominently positioned on a hill overlooking the historic village of Berrima is Harper’s Mansion, a National Trust property set in delightful gardens. Now a prized example of an early colonial Georgian country house, the two-storey mansion was built of locally sourced red clay bricks and sandstone in 1834 by James Harper. The son of convicts, Harper was a police officer at Bong Bong, who went on to develop a thriving inn at Berrima, but died just 11 years after his dream house was built. After various iterations, the mansion was passed on to the National Trust in 1978 and restored after decades of use and neglect. To explore a taste of 1840’s homelife and architecture, a delightful Southern Highlands country garden, and a challenging hedge maze, Harper’s Mansion is well worth a visit. Entry fees apply; tickets available at the door or pre-purchase online. Open weekends 11am-3pm; closed 18 December–13 January.

Summer at the National Gallery of Australia

tongue in cheek because she is consciously adopting an accusation that was made of women artists in the period of the 50s and 60s. Somehow women couldn’t be taken as seriously as men as artists.” Experience Deep inside my heart until 19 May.

Alongside its collections and new major exhibition, Emily Kam Kngwarray, there’s plenty to see at the National Gallery of Australia this summer. CW Arts & Entertainment editor, Jessica Cordwell, looks at two exhibitions now on display. Deep inside my heart

Pairing new acquisitions and works already in the National Gallery of Australia’s collection, Deep inside my heart is a showcase of the powerful, quirky and engaging works by influential female artists. The pieces created by female artists from the 20th and 21st centuries will be on display until 19 May, connected by a common thread – the use of the body. Senior curator of International Art, Lucina Ward says many of the artists also use unusual materials and approach their works with humour – either a hint or sometimes less subtle. “Sometimes it’s wry, sometimes it’s sly, and sometimes it’s very joyous,” she smiles. The exhibition takes its name from Do Not Abandon Me by Louise Bourgeois and Tracey Emin, which the Gallery acquired in 2020. Ms Ward says that Bourgeois, born in 1911, is the eldest of the three generations of women to be 16

04 January 2024

represented in the exhibition, the youngest being I Gusti Ayu Kadek Murniasih, who was born in 1996. According to Ms Ward, the works, particularly the new acquisitions, up the ante in women’s representation. “Also, the key period in art from the late ‘80s to the early ‘90s with the use of the human form, not only the role of the female body, comes to the fore again.” Another exhibition that comes to the Gallery as part of the commitment made in the Know My Name initiative, which is a celebration of the works of women artists and their contribution to Australia’s cultural life. Through art, the creators comment on gender, politics, identity, making, and the importance of the ways of working through the communicative power of the body, explains Ms Ward. “Someone like Kiki Smith, who’s one of our more senior artists often refers to herself as a housewife artist, she makes that reference slightly

Body Sculpture

A lesson in patience, emotion and the human experience awaits visitors of the unique animatronic piece Body Sculpture. The National Gallery of Australia’s new acquisition has been in the works with US-based artist Jordan Wolfson for over five years and is now available for public consumption until 28 April. A metallic-based form, visual experience and commentary on the state of the world today, the innovative work challenges our ideas of sculpture. With a deep desire to reach his audience and evoke feelings when faced with the physical and moral confrontation of society’s issues, Wolfson draws inspiration from classic art, pop culture and mass media. For approximately 30 minutes, the audience is invited on a journey through the ups and downs of what it means to be alive, conscious and sentient. With no gender or face, we are presented with a metal cube whose only human features are arms and hands; however, through carefully choreographed movements, we see moments of peace, despair, anger and sexuality.

Wolfson’s main collaborator, Mark Setrakian, a roboticist, composer, choreographer and percussionist, says they can’t assume that someone will react a certain way; all he can do is be honest with himself and his own feelings. However, he hopes that viewers will find something in the piece that moves them. “The moment when the cube is looking at its hands, that’s a very personal moment for me and what you take away from that is going to be very personal for you. The emotion that stirs in me, I do not assume that anyone else will feel those same feelings but it’s rewarding.” In Wolfson’s first solo work in Australia, Body Sculpture is shown alongside the artist’s selection of key items from the NGA’s collection that help to share insights into his vision. These include works from Mr Setrakian’s career, such as imagery from Spaceballs and Howard the Duck, the first motion pictures he worked on. “Jordan insisted on having those clips in there because he is a fan of that era of filmmaking and it’s indicative of my very earliest work. My path to robotics starts with a passion for creating motion and living characters out of inanimate puppets,” says Mr Setrakian. Book talk This week, Jeff Popple reviews three enjoyable novels to start off the year’s reading. More of Jeff’s reviews can be found on his blog: murdermayhemandlongdogs.com Never Ever Forever by Karina May

Macmillan, $34.99 Fans of charming, romantic comedies with plenty of wit will devour Karina May’s captivating Never Ever Forever. Rosie Royce, still missing her errant childhood sweetheart, Wes, gives up her high-pressure Sydney marketing career for a laidback radio job in rural Mudgee. It seems like being a nice change, but things do not go smoothly as Rosie has to deal with a handsome, but infuriating, co-host, a school reunion, the return of Wes and a chaotic work trip to India. Full of engaging episodes and plenty of smiles, Never Ever Forever is a slickly written and highly entertaining summer read.

The Search Party by Hannah Richell

Simon & Schuster, $32.99 Destination thrillers, wherein a small group of friends become stranded in a remote location with a deadly killer, are currently one of the hottest trends in crime fiction. Former Australian resident Hannah Richell dives wholeheartedly into the genre with her latest novel, The Search Party. Five old friends reunite for an idyllic glamping holiday on the rugged Cornwall coast, but tensions soon rise when a storm leaves them stranded and someone goes missing. A clever, well-constructed crime story that uses multiple points of view to seamlessly move between the police investigation, the survivors, and the catastrophic weekend. A good piece of summer escapism.

The Strip by Iain Ryan

Ultimo Press, $34.99 Finally, those who prefer gritty crime fiction will greatly enjoy The Strip by Iain Ryan. Set on the Gold Coast in 1980, it is a fast-moving tale that evokes the police novels of James Elroy. When a local doctor is brutally murdered, Detective Constable Lana Cohen joins the notorious Strike Force Diablo, which is filled with corrupt and inept cops seemingly incapable of solving a string of murders. Carefully navigating a sea of corruption, Lana teams up with the tarnished Henry Loch as they search for a killer in the Strip’s dark recesses. Aussie crime fiction does not get much better than this!

Now showing One Life (PG)

In 1988, Grete Winton (Lena Olin) leaves her husband, the elderly and retired stockbroker Nicholas Winton (Sir Anthony Hopkins), alone for the weekend. Nicholas starts tidying up a bit, and stumbles across an old notebook that holds hundreds of photographs of the Jewish children he helped escape Czechoslovakia before the onset of World War II. Haunted by those he couldn’t help, Nicholas starts to reminisce and wonders what became of the survivors. Oskar Schindler is celebrated for saving the lives of 1,200 Jewish people during the Holocaust by those he saved, their families and the larger general population having learned his story via the 1982 novel Schindler’s Ark and its 1993 film adaptation, Schindler’s List, directed by one Steven Spielberg. It is quite surprising, then, not to 18

04 January 2024

have heard much of Nicholas Winton. Perhaps it is the self-effacing British nature that steered Nicholas into keeping his achievements close to his chest, let alone locked in a drawer to collect dust. Over the weekend on his lonesome, Nicholas debates the best way to preserve the notebook, while remembering his frantic work during the late 1930s, putting his bureaucratic skills to the test by helping his colleagues tear through red tape against rising stakes and a ticking clock. It is a shame, then, that the movie needlessly and artificially escalates drama and emotion when the story is strong enough with both. Verdict: An amazing story told in a very conventional way, just in time for Oscar season. 3 stars. - Luke McWilliams themovieclub.net Viewed at Palace Cinemas.

What your tongue reveals about your health Did you know the shape, colour and condition of your tongue can tell you a lot about your health? In fact, in acupuncture, it is one of the key diagnostic tools used to reveal the state of your internal organ systems. Have a look at your tongue. Ideally, it should be a pale red colour, slightly moist with a smooth surface and a thin white coat. Not quite what you’re seeing? Don’t worry. Here are a few features you might have noticed in your tongue as well as what they can mean.

Cracks It’s quite common to find cracks in the surface of your tongue. If those cracks are along the centre of your tongue, it can indicate inflammation in your digestion and may explain why you have unwanted digestive symptoms such as reflux, bloating or pain. The deeper the cracks, the more extensive and chronic the inflammation.

nervous system is overstimulated and you’re probably tired and wired, having a hard time switching off your mind and relaxing.

Red edges Do the edges of your tongue look red compared to the rest of the tongue? The edges of your tongue indicate the health of your liver and gall bladder. Typically, you’d also be experiencing high levels of tension, feeling easily annoyed, and possibly suffering from headaches, stiff necks, and insomnia.

Scalloped edges This feature arises when your tongue swells slightly, enough to make it press up against your teeth causing the bumpy edges. If you see this feature, it’s also likely the tongue will be pale. This combination of features suggests you may be experiencing fatigue and are likely to be struggling with memory and focus.

Red tip The tip of your tongue indicates the state of your nervous system, according to Chinese medicine. If the tip of your tongue is red, it indicates your

Coating As mentioned above, a thin white coat is ideal. This coating is very subtle and almost

imperceptible but just enough to make the surface of your tongue moist rather than dry. Your tongue coating can change quickly depending on what you eat, for example just after you have a milk coffee, you’ll have a yellow/ brown coating. First thing in the morning, you’ll often see a thickish white coat so it’s a good idea to observe it at a few stages throughout the day. To an acupuncturist, your tongue provides indications that are woven together along with a myriad of other signs to build an understanding of your individual pattern of symptoms. They’re not just interested in what is happening but why it’s happening. From that understanding of your unique needs, they can tailor a treatment plan to suit.
