Tackling food insecurity: OzHarvest Canberra’s record year As more local residents struggle to put food on the table due to rising costs and mortgage stress, food assistance charity OzHarvest Canberra has had a record busy year: it rescued nearly 543,000 kg of food from landfill, and delivered almost 1.1 million free meals, or nearly 21,000 per week – including the nine millionth meal since it began in 2008. But Canberra city manager Bin Barnier says: “We’re still not meeting demand. That’s the tragedy of it all… “There are people in need around every corner… Two-income families with children are suddenly out of pocket. Something’s got to give. They’ve got to pay the mortgage. Do they drop health funds, or do they not buy new school shoes, or do they not eat well this week?” Last year, 31 per cent of people sought assistance for the first time, while demand rose by 73 per cent in May alone. “The experience of OzHarvest shows that more and more people are relying on rescued food and charity,” said Peter Gordon, CEO of 4

25 January 2024

community foundation Hands Across Canberra. “The increased demand is worrying.” Determined that nobody go hungry, OzHarvest Canberra’s drivers and volunteers collect leftover food from supermarkets, farmers’ markets, farms and dairies, as well as institutions like the National Gallery or the Arboretum. Every kilogram of food rescued supplies two meals. All the food is supplied, collected, and handed onto charities at no charge. “We’re there to help build resilience by providing nourishing food, to nourish people mentally and physically,” Ms Barnier said. “If they’re healthy physically, then they can look for work or be educated. “But if people aren’t nourished, it’s a very sad day in Australia, because there’s a lot of food out there.” To meet the rising demand, and rescue and deliver more food more reliably, OzHarvest acquired a third van in November. It has made an enormous difference, Ms Barnier believes. Having only two vans meant that if one driver was sick, they would lose half the food available; now, the loss is down

only a third. The drivers, too, are happier: “Before, I have never been able to see our drivers come in looking fresh and not absolutely spent,” Ms Barnier said. OzHarvest’s donors also supply more food. The charity likes to pick up an average of 60 kg from each donor, Ms Barnier said. In the past few weeks, they have picked up more than 170 kg from each one – nearly triple what they had hoped. OzHarvest also runs two education programs. FEAST (Food Education and Sustainability Training) teaches primary and high school students about food waste and its environmental impact, healthy eating, and easy classroom cooking. The program has been taken up by 1,000 schools across Australia, including 36 (25 primary and 11 high schools) in the ACT. “A lot of students are now cooking at home, and they’re really enthusiastic,” Ms Barnier said. At St Joseph’s Primary School, O’Connor, for instance, FEAST has become a rite of passage, she said. “The kids get so excited that they end up eating their own food, stuff that you’d never expect them to eat at home… Because they’ve made it together, and all the recycling has been done, they’re so proud of themselves.” Ryan McGee, the school’s sustainability coordinator, believes it is important to teach young people real-life skills they can apply outside the classroom. “I’ve loved seeing them work through the [FEAST] curriculum with a sense of pride and ownership, especially when they create a recipe that reduces waste and tastes delicious, too,” he said. “FEAST inspires students to make changes at home and school. “Over time, the children’s behaviour at home shifted from simply identifying food waste to working out how to use what they had. They came up with ideas such as making a tart with lemons from their garden and cooking pikelets using brown bananas.” One parent, Julie-anne, said she had seen a big shift in her kids: “They’re more involved at home and make me more accountable for not wasting so much food.” NEST (Nutrition Education Skills Training) is a six-week course run by nutritionists teaching healthy eating, budgeting, and affordable cooking to adults, so they can provide for themselves and their family in an economical and sustainable way, Ms Barnier said. The University of Wollongong found that results were greater than the anticipated outcome, but the program must be ongoing and reinforced. She believes that a centrally located kitchen would open up NEST for communities. At the moment, the nutritionists have to take their pots and pans with them when they run the course at (Continued page 6) canberradaily.com.au

(from page 4) Havelock House, the YWCA, or the PCYC. Could the private sector help with a purpose-built or revamped home? Ideally, it would be co-located with similar organisations like Lids4Kids, Roundabout Canberra, and GIVIT. “I have an abundance of volunteers; they don’t,” Ms Barnier said. “I’m more than happy to share my volunteers and to share the resources.” Following the “huge year” that was 2023, this year is about consistency, consolidation, and collaboration, and providing a more reliable service, Ms Barnier said. “But we want to share this discussion with all stakeholders, whether it be retailers, farmers, educators, the ACT Government, or the private sector.” She wants to host a Tuesday morning tea where volunteers can plan how to obtain the kitchen or find funding for the FEAST and NEST programs. She asks anyone with an advocacy or policy writing

background who believes they can further the food initiative to contact her. “We’ve got pretty much a hand-tomouth existence,” Ms Barnier said. “There’s plenty of food out there; we could get more food if we had more funds, and if we had an office that wasn’t just four walls, because four walls don’t cook a meal and don’t pass on skills. We have the education modules; we’ve got the cooking books; we’ve got the teacher resources that can be passed on. And we’d we like to be more than just one part of the puzzle. We’d like to connect to all the other stakeholders in the situation and share the resources.” In this election year, Ms Barnier will lobby the ACT Government to ensure students are educated about food. “They’re the champions, the ecowarriors of the future,” she said. “If they’re inspired, they can change the habits of their parents.” She would like the ACT and federal governments to fund a

stewardship program to foster understanding about nourishing food, like Germany’s National Strategy for Food Waste Reduction, which aims to halve per-capita food waste, and where retailers invest some of their turnover to foster good practices in sustainability and to enable food rescue. “We’d like to be out of business,” Ms Barnier confesses. “Ideally, we’d like to see no waste; we’d like to see everybody fed and educated, and everybody’s composting, has their own veggie patch, and no-one goes hungry. But that’s not where we are at the moment.” Until that happy day, the community can help to raise funds for OzHarvest by taking part in the ACT Government’s container deposit scheme. ReCollect picks up cans, bottles, cartons, juice boxes, and poppers; the 10-cent refund will be donated to OzHarvest. It has brought in $10,000 since July, but Ms Barnier believes Canberrans can raise as

much as $50,000 this year; there are, she notes, $10 million worth of bottles and cans out there to be recycled. Streets and apartment blocks can register as a pick-up site. beauty

Ageless : attractive traits beyond looks 2023 has now slid into 2024. Before long we will be planning for 2025. Sometimes it seems that the years slip by more and more quickly and as every year goes by, we add another unit to our age. For each stage in life, there seem to be expectations for health, behaviour and appearance. How often do you hear people of advanced years say, when talking about their health: ‘What can you expect at my age?’ How much of this do we have to accept as inevitable? Do the years under our belt really define who we are and how we function, how attractive we are? I was looking at an old black and white photo of my mum the other day. I guess she would have been in her early twenties. As a young woman, my mum was very lovely. She had a special grace about her that made you want to look longer. I began to think, if she was around today looking like that you would still have to say she

was beautiful, but she wouldn’t fit today’s standards of beauty. Her skin was whiter, her body fleshier, her hair contrived into curls and she wore a pretty frock. Standards of beauty change. This set me to think about what beauty really is. In each era, fashion seems to give us strict dictates as to what the ideal look is – how tanned our skin should be, how lean our body needs to be, and even the shape of our eyebrows. Not many of us fit that ideal model. So, does this mean that we are not beautiful? If we do fit those standards, are we only beautiful for a short while? Does age diminish true beauty? Our society is currently quite preoccupied with youthfulness but true youthfulness is not defined by our age but by the youthful qualities we express. My mother knew the impact that thought has on experience. To the end, she was a strong,

Australia Day is 26 January – no need to change it… Brickbats for Albo for not giving the 47 used Taipan helicopters to Ukraine. The Ukrainians would make good use of them. Ukraine’s fight is our fight, and they need all the help they can get. Closer to home, the usual virtue signalling suspects are bleating about changing the date of Australia Day again. Australia Day in the Park (Commonwealth Park) and Australia Day generally bring back fond memories for me of the late, great Marjorie Turbayne, formerly doyenne and manageress of the Press Club, and a lady who in her sixties chased two would-be burglars from her home. She had also served with Britain’s Special Operations Executive during the war as an undercover agent in France. Marjorie would get all kinds of eclectic people to help celebrate Australia Day. In the early 1990s, my job was to help the late Fred Daly, famous number one Raiders fan and Labor 8

healthy, active woman. The qualities people saw in her – intelligence, calmness and strength in the face of trouble, joy at the little things, devotion to family and friends, innocence, resilience, energy - these qualities shone out of her right to the last. They were the qualities that people mentioned when they commented on how lovely my mother was. Perhaps if we put as much thought and effort into developing beautiful qualities of mind as we do our outward appearance our beauty and health would be less ephemeral and blossom with the passing years. hero, run Speakers’ Corner. Fred had some great stories to tell of the federal parliament in the 1940s through to the Whitlam era. Now I’m a dreadful cricketer, and I was also honoured to be asked by Marjorie on Australia Day 2001 to join my old ALP Assembly colleague Ted Quinlan and play in the PM’s team coached by Allan Border. I got out for a duck but bowled a credible one wicket for seven runs. Border actually sent me in to bowl again. I was rapt! We all then adjourned to the Lodge for a few quiet ones after the game. Australia Day is a day of celebration of being Australian, no matter where you were born. In recent years, ceremonies have given due recognition to our unique Indigenous history. The day marks the beginning of modern Australia. If the Poms had not got here first and occupied the place, it is most likely a much more vicious colonial power would have. If it had been the Russians, Spaniards, Germans,

or practically anyone else but the French, the Indigenous inhabitants would probably have all been slaughtered or killed off through disease. Jacinta Price, during the Voice debate, recently pointed out how happy and proud she was that Australia was occupied by the British. The poor old Poms are pretty pathetic today, but apart from doing some pretty nasty things to our Indigenous brothers and sisters (as well as to the convicts), they brought us the rule of law, free speech, roads, railways, hospitals, schools, and the makings of a true democratic society that went on, especially after WW2, to welcome new citizens from over 160 different countries, most of whom were naturalised on Australia Day. We came of age on 25 April 1915 (Anzac Day), but the true start day for the modern Australia most of us love (87 per cent in the latest opinion poll) was, like it or not, 26 January 1788. Further – on that day in Sydney Cove, no Indigenous people were hurt or killed. That, folks, is hardly an invasion. Occupation, maybe; invasion, no. canberradaily.com.au

Challenges and opportunities for 2024 WITH GREG HARFORD CHIEF EXECUTIVE CANBERRA BUSINESS CHAMBER

Happy New Year – and welcome to 2024, which promises to have a number of challenges and opportunities for business. Across the ACT economy, the busy Christmas period didn’t fire up as much as many businesses expected. The latest Canberra Business Beat survey shows that only half of businesses here in Canberra hit their sales targets for the last quarter. There are a few reasons for that. First, the weather has been a significant issue, particularly for retail and hospitality. The reality is that Canberrans don’t get out and about as much when the weather is bad, and the run of atrocious weather we’ve had has really dented sales. The second issue that’s going on is that we are still seeing the impacts of the Federal Government trying to move away from using external consultants. Canberra is particularly impacted by this because of the large number of firms here focused on servicing the Commonwealth as a client. There’s less money coming into those firms at the moment, and therefore less money circulating in the Canberra economy as a result. The biggest issue, though, is the state of the economy generally, and the impact of inflation. Interest rates remain relatively high, meaning that anyone with a mortgage has to set aside more every week. At the same time, the cost of all 10

25 January 2024

goods has continued to increase over the last few months, meaning that many households face a double whammy in terms of increased costs. The bottom line is that consumers are reprioritising their spending to focus on the basics and pay essential bills. This has big impacts across the economy. Consumers are less likely to install that new solar electricity system or buy a new fridge right now – they have to save for longer to buy these big-ticket items. We still want to enjoy ourselves, though; there’s still good demand for eating out – although hospitality businesses report that customers are more value-conscious and looking for cheaper options when they do so. The slight downturn in economic activity does mean, though, that, anecdotally, it’s a bit easier to find tradespeople at the moment, so it is a good time to think about getting some of those household projects underway. All reports suggest that the Reserve Bank of Australia will start to ease interest rates later this year, around September. While businesses still report upwards pressure on prices, the statistics show that inflation has eased a little, so I hope that we might see the RBA move earlier to start bringing interest rates down. This will ease the pain for households, and perhaps see a bit of an improvement in economic activity. taste Lamb with a Thai twist Thai-Australian cook and food entrepreneur Marion Grasby, who won the hearts of Australia in Season 2 of MasterChef, has teamed up with Australian Lamb to create two vibrant recipes inspired by her family, her upbringing and her love of outdoor entertaining. Perfect for sharing with family and friends.

Crying Tiger Lamb

Fresh mint, to serve

This is Marion’s spin on the Thai classic dish. Serve it family style with fresh lettuce, herbs and shoots, then wrap and roll.

Snow pea shoots (optional), to serve

Trimmed green beans, to serve

Spicy dipping sauce (nahm jim jaew) 2 tsp raw glutinous rice (aka sticky rice)

Prep: 5 minutes | Cook: 20 minutes Serves: 4

1 Tbsp tamarind concentrate 3 Tbsp fish sauce 1 Tbsp brown sugar

1 Tbsp oyster sauce

1 Tbsp Thai chilli powder

1 Tbsp fish sauce

1 Tbsp lime juice

4 x 150g (5 oz) lamb steaks Vegetable oil, for brushing

1 small red shallot, sliced into fine wedges

Fresh lettuce leaves, to serve

2 tsp finely chopped coriander

Recipes and images courtesy of Australian Lamb.

Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).

set aside until ready to serve.

Place the lamb steaks in a shallow dish and pour over the oyster sauce and fish sauce. Use your fingers to massage the marinade all over the steak pieces, then set aside to marinate while you prepare the remaining ingredients.

Heat a large heavy-based, ovenproof frying pan over high heat. Brush with oil. When hot, add the lamb steaks and cook one side for 2 minutes until you get a nice, charred colour. Flip the steaks and cook for a further 2 minutes on the other side until golden. Now transfer the pan to the oven and cook for 4–5 minutes (for medium rare – my steaks were roughly 3cm thick) or until cooked to your liking. Transfer to a cutting board and allow to rest for 5 minutes.

For the spicy dipping sauce, toast the rice in a dry frying pan over high heat for around 2-3 minutes or until golden brown and fragrant (it should smell like popcorn). Use a mortar and pestle or a spice grinder to grind to a fine powder. In a bowl, combine the tamarind, fish sauce, sugar, chilli powder, lime juice, shallot and coriander. Add in the toasted rice powder and mix until well combined. Transfer to a small serving bowl and

Slice the lamb steaks on the diagonal and then transfer to a large platter or board along with the fresh lettuce leaves, mint, beans, snow pea shoots (if using) and the spicy dipping sauce. Serve family-style.

National Croissant Day

If Canberra were a gelato flavour, what would it be? That’s the question on the lips of Matteo Sassi and his wife Juliana, owners of Florence Gelato at Capital Food Market in Belconnen. To celebrate their new gelateria which launched on 20 January, Matteo is after local input to help him make a truly Canberran gelato. Suggestions can be submitted via Instagram @florence.gelato until Monday 29 January. Here’s the scoop: The unique, yet-to-be-created flavour will be available for a limited time in late summer.

Bonjour! National Croissant Day is 30 January, and to celebrate, Three Mills Bakery is seeking applications for a Chief Croissant Consumption Officer. To claim the title, simply head to threemillsbakery.com.au/ national-croissant-daycompetition-2024 and tell them in 25 words or fewer why you’re the best person for the job. The winner gets to enjoy a croissant at Three Mills Bakery each and any day of the year and receives a box of bake-at-home croissants delivered to their door each month for a year. Entries close this Friday 26 January. canberradaily.com.au

Thai-Style Panang Grilled Lamb Cutlets This recipe pairs lamb cutlets with a punchy (and ridiculously easy) Thai panang curry sauce and tart pineapple and herb salad. Ideal for entertaining, it’s quick, simple and standout delicious: all the makings of a perfect get-together with loved ones.

1 tsp shrimp paste (optional)

Prep: 10 minutes | Cook: 20 minutes Serves: 4–6

1 long red chilli, finely sliced

½ tsp ground cumin 1 tsp ground coriander Herb & pineapple salad ½ small pineapple, skin and core removed, cut into small chunks 1 cup fresh Asian herbs (e.g. coriander, spring onion, Thai basil/mint)

12 Australian lamb cutlets or loin chops 2 Tbsp fish sauce 1 Tbsp vegetable oil, plus extra for grilling 400ml coconut milk 1½ Tbsp finely shaved palm sugar Cheat’s panang paste 2 Tbsp roasted peanuts 2 makrut lime leaves, de-stemmed 190g Thai red curry paste

To make the panang paste, use a mortar and pestle to pound the roasted peanuts until finely crushed. Then add the makrut leaves and pound again until finely crushed. Stir through the curry paste, shrimp paste (if using), plus the ground cumin and ground coriander. To marinate the lamb, place the cutlets in a large bowl. Take 1 tablespoon of the panang paste and add it to the lamb cutlets along with ½ tablespoon of fish sauce. Mix until well combined

Recipes and images courtesy of Australian Lamb.

and each lamb cutlet is coated in the paste. Set aside until you’re ready to grill (a few minutes is fine or you could also marinate overnight). To make the curry sauce, heat the vegetable oil in a saucepan over medium heat. Add the remaining panang paste and cook, stirring, for 2 minutes or until fragrant. Stir through the coconut milk, the remaining fish sauce and palm sugar. Cover and reduce the heat to low. Gently simmer for 2 minutes to allow the flavours to infuse. Remove from heat and set aside

until ready to serve (gently reheat before serving). Heat a grill plate or charcoal barbecue until hot. Brush the grill plates with oil. Grill the lamb chops for 3-4 minutes each side (for medium) or until cooked to your liking (don’t forget to grill the fat cap, too). Transfer to a tray to rest. For the herb & pineapple salad, add all the ingredients to a large bowl and toss together until combined. Place the lamb chops on a serving platter, sprinkle over the herb & pineapple salad and serve with the panang sauce on the side.

time out Canberra author celebrates the first day of school in new book Throughout our lives, we get to have many first moments like our first kiss, our first paycheck and our first heartbreak. Young children across the country are approaching a big one, the first day of school. Canberra author Rhiân Williams captures the milestone in the picture book Surprise at the End of Onkaparinga Lane. “Lots of kids have been to childcare and kinder and lots of things but looking to that first day of school is still a big, important ritual and milestone for children. How we set up really makes a difference, it’s this thing of embarking on this lifelong journey of learning,” says Ms Williams. The story follows Joe as he walks to his first day of school down Onkaparinga Lane. Along the way, the reader encounters a celebration of neighbours and friendships. “He has this really important news he wants to share with everybody but unfortunately none of his neighbours are home anywhere along Onkaparinga

Lane and he is very sad. Then he gets to the end of Onkaparinga Lane and there are all his friends from the lane waiting to welcome him to his first day of school.” Ms Williams’s third children’s book originally started as a counting book, until author Sue Whiting, who was mentoring Ms Williams at the time, suggested including a narrative arc. Thinking of what could happen in her lovely counting story, she was inspired by the first day of school. “I have a friend called Joe, I think he didn’t have the happiest childhood and so it was kind of this imaging of what a happy childhood would look like, that was part of the inspiration,” she smiles. Beautifully illustrated by Martina Heiduczek, the imagery and story highlight the author’s other inspiration- the diversity in a typical Australian neighbourhood. A volunteer firefighter, Ms Williams says one of the sentiments they often hear is the importance of

knowing your neighbours as they will be the ones closest in an emergency. “There’s a whole lot of lovely research that shows people feel safer in their neighbourhoods if they know their neighbours, even just a wave and say hello to,” she says. “We might not have a deep connection to people, but just knowing them to say hello to provides what is called a weak social tie and the more weak social ties we have, the stronger we feel connected to our community and our neighbourhood.” The heartwarming picture book is also Ms Williams’s love letter to grandmothers everywhere. It was after writing the book she came to the

realisation that it must have been Joe’s grandmother who organised the neighbours. Launching the book late last year at Parliament House, Dr Anne Aly, Minister for Early Education, enjoyed the fact that it was the grandmother who was with Joe during this special time. She told Ms Williams the role of a grandparent, particularly a grandmother, is incredibly important in a lot of our culturally and linguistically diverse communities. “What she was taken by is just how representative that [the grandmother’s role] would be to the diversity of our community. I was reflecting on the saying ‘What you can’t see, you can’t be’ and

the idea that lots of children’s picture books don’t necessarily have a lot of diversity represented in them. Although I think that is really improving.” Along with the appreciation for those who are important to us, Ms Williams hopes the book will help readers treasure ‘those moments’. “Those moments don’t have to be the big moments like the first day of school, those moments might be the first time you walk along a particular street, the first time you spot a Christmas beetle, or the time of the year when the Eastern longneck turtles come out. There is surprise and delight in so many ordinary everyday things,” she smiles. Not being able to launch her first book due to

pandemic restrictions, Ms Williams offered to write a letter to any child who bought the book. “People could just email me via my website and I would then write a letter to the little person that they were gifting the book to.” Enjoying the letter-writing experience, she is happy to write a letter to any child starting school who has a copy of Surprise at the End of Onkapringa Lane. Book talk This week, Jeff Popple reviews three good rural novels for Australia Day. More of Jeff’s reviews can be found on his blog murdermayhemandlongdogs.com Heart Of The River by Cheryl Adnams HQ, $32.99 Set alongside a flooding Murray River in 1956, Heart Of The River is an engaging book by one of Australia’s leading practitioners of the historical novel, Cheryl Adnams. Mixing romance with war, prejudice, and family drama, Heart Of The River follows the burgeoning relationship between local pub cook Isabel Hayward, and Italian farmer Matteo Sorrenti. Isabel, Matteo and wealthy farming scion, Ross Burrows, are all linked by their father’s wartime experiences, and, as the river rises to its peak, tensions and old secrets emerge. Full of interesting historical detail, this is an engrossing tale that will appeal to aficionados of rural history and romance.

The Good Dog by Simon Rowell Text, $34.99 Simon Rowell’s series about Detective Sergeant Zoe Mayer of the Victorian Police Force and her trusty service dog, Harry, is an underappreciated gem of Australian crime writing. The Good Dog is third book in the series and opens with Zoe and Harry being called to the rural area of Mount Macedon. The bodies of a notorious fraudster and his lawyer have been found in a carpark, and it seems like a grisly murder-suicide. Zoe, however, is sceptical, especially when further violence occurs. Well plotted and briskly paced, this is another accomplished novel by Rowell that will keep you keenly reading to the end.

Now showing Riceboy Sleeps (M) In South Korea, So-Yung (Choi Seung-yoon) makes the hard choice to immigrate to Canada to give her young son Dong-Hyun (Dohyun Noel Hwang) a better life. Over a decade, the duo faces a myriad of challenges in trying to fit in, culminating in Dong-Hyun (now played by Ethan Hwang) being involved in a fight after learning of his mother’s illness. So-Yung is a determined and resilient woman. Being left widowed, So-Yung leaves her home country and family so that her son may benefit from being a citizen. So-Yung goes through the humiliation of workplace harassment in her male-dominated factory job during the ‘90s, and her young son is ridiculed due to his Korean heritage. So-Yung projects onto her son the need for physical self-defence, leading to further difficulties

integrating with his peers. It is when So-Yung realises that she will not always be there for her son that she makes the brave decision to face the family and land that she had left behind so long ago. Based on the writer-director’s own childhood, the movie shows the dichotomy of self, time, and place. Lingering scenes shot in Canada are in a restricted ratio, where mother and son are seen as barely full people, having to forgo one’s heritage and even names in the effort to integrate. In Korea, the ratio is expansive, displaying solid links to the past and a potential path forward to a better future. Verdict: A gentle, thoughtful, and simple movie, dealing with complex emotions in finding one’s place. - Luke McWilliams, themovieclub.net

the look Colleen’s: Celebrating 23 years supporting women Twenty-three years ago, Colleen Findley OAM, was standing in a change room with tears pouring down her face, recovering from a mastectomy and trying to find a new bra and prosthesis to fill the space where her breast tissue had once been. A sympathetic community nurse was trying to fit a standard bra to suit her petite build, the cumbersome ugly bra she had been given in hospital was ten times too big. As she looked at herself in the mirror, Colleen thought, “This must change. I don’t want any more women to have to go through this experience.” Determined to make a change for post mastectomy support and care, Colleen contacted a European company who specialise in external breast prosthesis and although she was still recovering from chemotherapy, flew to Germany for training in how to fit prostheses and

bras. On her return, she opened Colleen’s in 2001 in Phillip, Canberra’s only Post Mastectomy store. Within a short period of time, it became evident to Colleen that there was a need for front opening bras for those who had arthritis, had suffered a stroke, and for other medical conditions, so she added these to the range of bras. When Colleen decided to hand over Colleen’s and take time to relax, travel and write a book on her experiences, she knew only a woman who had been down the road of recovery could run a business like this. Gillian Horton had an irrepressible desire to help women who had found themselves in the same position after her own diagnosis in 2008. She saw this desire become a reality when she purchased the business from Colleen in 2014. When Gillian moved the store to the Garran

shops it became more evident that women were struggling to find bras not available elsewhere. Now Colleen’s offers an inclusive range of bras, including larger cup sizes, broader backs, petite frames, support backs, sports bras and of course front opening, post-surgical bras and prostheses. They offer a professional bra fitting service for all women and advice on the right styles for your needs. When you step into Colleen’s no matter how daunted or emotionally fragile you feel… one thing’s for certain - you will be greeted with warmth and kindness. You will be comforted by a voice that says, “I understand and I’m here to help.” Empathy is assured.

health+wellbeing Kickstart chronic pain relief by adding VR to exercise Research suggests virtual reality (VR) and exercise may go hand in hand when setting out to ease chronic pain. Conducted by the University of South Australia, the study found that VR makes undertaking exercise an easier task. The study combined cycling and VR to distract the participants while they were exercising with a headset that transported them to a digital countryside. Research was done using a stationary bike system wirelessly linked to a bespoke VR program which allowed a remote control to adjust resistance. Riding the bike for up to 30 minutes, the program also recorded how hard the participant was working. What difference will it make to chronic pain sufferers? The novel bike system found when people combine virtual reality with cycling, their enjoyment increases by 20 per cent and they exercised 15 per cent longer. For those with chronic pain, the VR

distracts them from their condition, enabling them to engage in exercise and improve recovery. The Pain Australia Budget Submission 2021 to 2022, Working Together to Address Chronic Pain, states that 3.4 million people are living with chronic pain in Australia. PhD candidate at the university, Erin MacIntyre, explains that being active is not only essential to staying physically and mentally fit, it’s also important when recovering from injuries and managing chronic conditions. The current national exercise guidelines recommend 30 minutes of exercise three to five times a week, yet it is suggested only one in five achieve this. Ms MacIntyre says exercise plays an important role in rehabilitation, often reducing pain and disability. “But the challenge is that there are often barriers to exercise – many find it boring or say that it requires too much effort or can be painful. So,

Research suggests that adding virtual reality to cycling may help ease chronic pain.

we’ve been looking at ways to help overcome these barriers. “We found that the VR experience distracted cyclists from the exertion of exercise and made the exercise feel easier, which together contributed to increased enjoyment and engagement.” Senior researcher, Associate Professor Tasha Stanton, believes the system used in the study allows for improving exercise engagement in clinical settings. “Our preliminary findings demonstrate the effectiveness of VR to improve both engagement and enjoyment of exercise, even in people who are experiencing chronic pain.” Funded by the Hospital Research Foundation Group, the team is looking to expand their cycling research with additional participants.

home Get organised Setting goals is more than just a New Year’s resolution, according to expert planner and organiser, Mariane Cresp – it takes determination combined with clear planning to ensure success. Here are Mariane’s expert tips to have you kicking your goals well into February and beyond:

Be smart – you may have heard of S.M.A.R.T. goals at work but they can also apply to personal goals. Smart goals stand for ‘specific’, ‘measurable’, ‘attainable’, ‘relevant’ and ‘time specific’.

Spell it out – your goals should be clear and well-defined. For example, instead of saying “I want to exercise more,” you could say, “I want to start walking for 20 minutes three times a week.”

Write it down – experts say that handwriting has more impact than typing when it comes to goal-setting and memory. Having a stylish diary or planner and a pen you love is a great way to stay organised and keep track of deadlines. Be flexible – they say life is what happens while you’re busy making other plans, so stay flexible. Sometimes, there’s nothing else you can do but go with the flow!

Celebrate – remember to celebrate the small wins. Acknowledging small milestones along the way can help keep you motivated. Don’t forget to share your successes with your loved ones – having a support team is a wonderful way to help spur you on. Mariane Cresp loves planning, organising and stationery for self-care, productivity and mental well-being. She has 94,200 followers on Instagram where she shares her tips and tutorials with her followers. For further information on Pilot Pens, visit pilotpen.com.au

On the clock – by putting a timeframe on your goals, you’re holding yourself accountable to achieving them and measuring your success. For example, instead of saying, “I want to read more books,” you could say, “I want to read one book each month for the next 12 months.”

Bite size pieces – break down larger tasks into smaller, more achievable ones to help you manage tasks better and avoid overwhelm.

An ideal first home Charnwood 5 Lackey Place Located on a spacious 721sqm block in a tranquil cul-de-sac, this updated three-bedroom residence in Charnwood ticks a lot of boxes for many first home buyers. According to agent Eoin Ryan-Hicks, 5 Lackey Place is “the perfect first home”. “Its practical design and the indoor-outdoor living is a standout,” he says. “The large block is great with plenty of room to grow.” One of his favourite things about this property is the seamless indoor-outdoor living. Two large decks at the front and back of the home extend the living space outdoors so you 26

can enjoy the fresh air while entertaining friends and family. This charming home also boasts an open plan living area, contemporary kitchen and updated family bathroom to create a comfortable and stylish atmosphere. And when it comes to location, Mr Ryan-Hicks says the quiet cul-de-sac is a standout, so the property is quite peaceful. “It is also close to schools, local shops and ovals to add to the great location.” With its updated amenities, expansive deck, family-friendly block, and peaceful location, this property is a rare find.
