Hello, possums! ACT Wildlife hosts first Galah Ball lthough ACT Wildlife has been in operation for 10 years, many people aren’t aware of the organisation’s dedication to protecting the wildlife of our region. In a bid to raise awareness and funds, they’re hosting a night of fun and great food in the ACT Wildlife Gala(h) Ball at the National Museum of Australia (NMA) on Friday 1 March. The evening starts with canapes and bubbles on the deck of the NMA accompanied by classical tunes before attendees are treated to a three-course meal and drinks. Entertainment is in abundance with Canberra celebrities Ned and Josh on hosting duties. There will also be a photobooth (tails and ears included), table trivia, and a live auction. Prizes on offer include a night at Jamala Lodge, a $500 Canberra Airport voucher, and possibly a morning tea with baby wombats. All funds raised from the night of fun go towards continuing the organisation’s mission to rescue, rehabilitate and release injured, sick and orphaned native wildlife. “Everything from the vet and medical bills to putting up more enclosures for short-term care – anything that supports the animals,” says Tracey McNicol, volunteer and member of the ball’s organising committee. Taking six months off work to do something she loved – helping animals – Ms McNicol started 8
08 February 2024
volunteering at the zoo before meeting an ACT Wildlife volunteer. She jumped on board and began rescuing and caring for baby birds, and has been volunteering with ACT Wildlife for the past two years. Now that she’s back working fulltime, Ms McNicol is more on the caring side, although she still heads out to rescues after hours. Currently in her care are two orphaned young possums, Lily and Poppy. After birds, Ms McNicol believes possums are their next most common rescued native animal; sometimes accidental, sometimes more nefarious. Answering on average 13,000 calls a year, ACT Wildlife rescues lizards which have had run-ins with lawnmowers and dogs, water birds that are caught on hooks, and other native animals that need help. Heading out on rescues, Ms McNicol says people often confused them with WIRES (Wildlife Information, Rescue and Education Service), the NSW equivalent. “It’s really concerning when someone might call WIRES, they’ll wait on hold, and eventually WIRES will pick up the phone, because they are always really busy, and say ‘Unfortunately, if it’s in the ACT, you need to call ACT Wildlife.’ By this time, an animal is potentially lying beside a road bleeding to death and in pain; you just want to get to them through to us as quickly as possible,” she says. A government grant means ACT Wildlife can employ people to answer the phones during the day Monday to Saturday; the rest of the time, the 24-hour
line is operated by volunteers. Ms McNicol says that more support would mean shorter wait times and the sooner they can rescue an injured or orphaned critter. Only having a limited number of people being qualified to rescue, Ms McNicol hopes the gala(h) ball might attract some more volunteers, whether it be on the phones, rescuing or caring. While the organisation has around 200 paid-up members, she says the majority are not active. “It kind of fits into your own lifestyle anyway, so if you’ve got an hour free a month, that’s sometimes all that’s necessary to help out.” Their goal is to release as many of the animals as they can, however, some species, like baby wombats, stay in care for up to 18 months. “That’s a lot of time, effort and money for somebody to care for this tiny baby and they are treated just like a baby, they need their mother – just like these baby possums,” smiles Ms McNicol. Before being released into their natural habitat, the babies are introduced to the wild in enclosures. For Poppy and Lily, that will happen when they reach six or seven months. “We get them used to being in the outdoor world where it could be cold, wet, windy. We wild them up for about three months; they start to get natives [flora] from the area that they might be released in, so they get used to the native branches,” she says. The release process differs for each species; birds are usually let go near where they were found. Territorial creatures like wombats and possums require a lot of research before finding a release spot where there aren’t any major predators or others of their kind. “When you’ve been caring for a baby like that for a very long period of time, it can be devastating if one doesn’t survive. You do everything you can to nurture it and make sure that out in the world it will be as successful as possible,” Ms McNicol says. Heading into the future, ACT Wildlife is hoping to receive government support for road signage with their details in places where wildlife might be injured. Education is also a high priority; the organisation aims to teach locals about sharing the urban interface with native wildlife. This ranges from the dangers of feeding bread to ducks, swans and other birds, to what to do when a possum takes up residence in your roof. “We’re the ones who knock down their houses, knock down the trees for the birds and possums, take away the land for the wombats. We’ve taken away their homes, we can hardly complain when they want to start living in our rooftops. They don’t have a home any longer, they’ve got nowhere to go,” Ms McNicol says. Tuggeranong misses its walk of life Almost 500 Tuggeranong residents are without a parkrun – for the first time in 10 years due to redevelopment – and the tight-knit running community is feeling the loss. parkrun is more than a fivekilometre run, it is a lifeline for many people, according to co-event director Gary Clarke. The UK founder of parkrun, Paul Sinton-Hewitt, started it for his own mental health 20 years ago with only 13 people. Last Saturday marked the one millionth parkrun participant in Australia. However, for the next three months, Tuggeranong is without its “Saturday church”. “It really is a lifeline for some people when they’re going through tough things,” Gary says. “They know the regularity of parkrun is there, you have the opportunity to get around positive people, get some exercise, and we
10

sometimes make contact with people when we miss them for a few weeks, just to make sure they’re okay.” Half of Tuggeranong’s usual 474 parkrunners didn’t attend a parkrun on 27 January. 77 attended the nearest event at Point Hut Pond parkrun, and a further 39 and 28 attended Coombs and Burley Griffin respectively. The ACT has eight parkruns (there are close to 500 across Australia), however, none of the others are designed to accommodate, or hoping to see, the 400+ Tuggeranong parkrunners each week. Gary says it’s not the course that’s important, it’s the conversation. “Some of our favourite parkruns are when we’ll just do a gentle jog and start at the back with the volunteer tail (last) walkers, and because we know so many of our community, we’ll chat to people on the way through, say g’day to a lot of others, and then
we’ll head back out on course to encourage people and catch up with friends,” Gary says. Gary is co-event director with his wife, Denise. Together they’ve looked after Tuggeranong parkrun for several years and helped set up seven other parkruns in the region. The couple plan to keep in contact with Tuggeranong parkrun participants via Facebook to encourage them to keep going. “There are a number of people here who are really attached to the community in Tuggeranong, and won’t necessarily feel as comfortable going elsewhere. But then there’s a lot of crazies like us who would never want to miss one,” Gary says. Fifty-three-year-old Gary has completed 208 of his 419 parkruns at Tuggeranong, but he has competition from long-time Tuggeranong parkrunner, Jimmy White, who’s in his 70s.
Tuggeranong parkrun co-directors, Denise and Gary Clarke. Photo: Georgia Curry.
“He’s about to do his 500th parkrun, which is still pretty rare in Australia,” Gary says. “He’s done more events, 450, at Tuggeranong than anyone else. He had a pacemaker installed a couple of years ago.” Jimmy says he will “definitely miss Tuggeranong parkrun and seeing everyone there”. “But I won’t be missing out on my Saturday morning ritual. I’ll just go where my friends go”. Tuggeranong parkrun is due to resume in May this year. ACT’s Afghan-Australian women empowered through education Since the Taliban took power in Afghanistan in 2021, women there have not been able to attend secondary school or tertiary education; or leave their homes unaccompanied. But in Canberra, Afghan-Australian women relish the chance to study and work, and they hope to improve the lot of their sisters in Afghanistan. Canberra Weekly spoke to three of them: Aamena Alizai, who graduated from the University of Canberra with a Bachelor of Politics and International Relations, and wants to be a diplomat; and Frishta Hussaini and Madina Lodin, who will both start law degrees at the University of Canberra this month. “I would not have had those opportunities back in Afghanistan,” Madina said. “There’s no way that I could have reached the stage I’m at. I would probably now have been at home, washing dishes or doing some other house duty.” Madina came to Australia in 2020. At that time, she had very limited English.
“I could just say ‘Hi’, ‘How are you?’, and stuff like that. I was very shy to speak.” But she worked hard to study English and communicate with people. Her determination paid off; she received a scholarship from Migrant and Refugee Settlement Services (MARSS), awarded to a student from a refugee background studying at Dickson College, and has achieved one of her biggest dreams: getting into law school. Whether as a judge or as a lawyer, she wants to show people in Afghanistan to value women, and that women can change the world. “When I graduate, I really want to do something for my people, especially for the women who can’t study currently,” Madina said. “It makes me very, very sad. I finished my Year 10 in Afghanistan. When I came here, I saw the opportunity that girls and women have – but people in Afghanistan, especially women, don’t have it. Now the Taliban came, they can’t go

to school; they are just sitting at home doing housework, which is not what they want. I have some friends who wish to go to university and finish college or a good degree, but they can’t. It’s very disappointing.” Her friend Frishta arrived the year before, in 2019. It was hard to move to another country with new faces and different cultures and traditions, she reflects. But she picked up English and started communicating with people. Last year, at Dickson College, she created a human rights (continued page 14)

news (from page 12) activist group, to talk about issues across the world and how to solve them. She and Madina also helped newly arrived students learn how to speak English, communicate with people, and reach their goals. Now she is excited about going to university. “In my head, I’m ready to smash the class, just go for it,” Frishta said. She wants to become a human rights lawyer, “so then I can share my voice, and be a voice for the voiceless”. Like Madina, she wants to show people “who do not actually know what a woman means” the value of a woman, and how a woman can communicate, and create positive changes. “I want women to be a part of the community, especially in Afghanistan,” Frishta said. “We and all of us in Canberra and Australia, we all want to make a positive change to provide opportunities for women to continue learning, education, and jobs.” Now, Frishta says, she feels proud of herself; she overcame challenges in college and high school, with the support of her parents and family, and people in the community “who always have an eye out for the young generation”. Aamena’s story is different: born in Germany, she
came to Canberra when she was four years old. “I’ve never been to Afghanistan … but even though I haven’t been, I’m still a child of two migrant parents who did so much for me and my brother to be able to get to where we are now. And for that, I am so appreciative, because it made me realise how much I want to do more with my life and how I want to do further studies.” Ever since Year 10, she has wanted to be a diplomat, helping the West strengthen its political, economic, and diplomatic ties with other countries, and work in the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade or the Australian Signals Directorate. “If there were a lot of measures put into place, I feel like we could make Afghanistan a thriving place for not only women, but young children, boys, girls, men, everyone, to flourish and really excel in what they choose to do with their life, in terms of career aspirations and higher education. Unfortunately, there is a bit of a barrier and difficulty in doing that at the moment. I feel like there needs to be that push from the West to help put those measures in place. But that is only dependent on those diplomatic ties…” Having graduated from UC, she has applied
to do a master’s degree in European studies and public administration. If she is accepted, she will move to Germany for a year and a half. She loved every moment of university, she says. “When I finished last year, I didn’t realise how much I would miss studying and going to tutorials and lectures, and having the opportunity to sit with like-minded people and have discussions about topics that we were all interested in and held a lot of passion for, and in an environment that you weren’t judged and you’re allowed to speak your mind and also be challenged.” “When I hear the stories of how women aren’t allowed to pursue further education or higher education, it makes me really disappointed that they’re not able to follow and chase their dreams, and … broaden their knowledge… It definitely makes you appreciate what you have here and everything that we get provided here, like access to education, higher education, and the jobs and careers that can follow afterwards.” “These people are young; they’re the ones who are going to bring some changes,” said Dr Nadir Saikal, the Afghan Peace Foundation’s state director Canberra. Thank you, Jan Spate, much loved retired vet WITH BILL STEFANIAK AM RFD FORMER ACT OPPOSITION LEADER
This week, I want to pay tribute to a local legend who has sadly had to cease practice as a vet. I met Jan Spate, the country vet of Hall, in the 1990s. Jan was already a legend. Not only was she an expert at looking after all animals large and small, but she would often provide her services for free or at minimum rates. No animal was left unattended just because its owner could not pay for its treatment. I will tell one story about Jan involving my own dear little cavoodle, Bailey. In late 2014 or thereabouts, Bailey was not well, so I took him to Jan. He had a paralysis tick, and more than 50 grass burrs had got under the poor little bloke’s coat and burrowed into his skin. Jan quickly sorted out the tick, and after she and I sheared Bailey, she proceeded to take the 50odd burrs out of him, in two goes – 30 one night, and 20 the next day. She saved his life, and I was very careful to avoid long grass again. The first night took about 60 minutes, and the second day 30 minutes. I paid Jan $150 for the job – she refused to take more – and I had to virtually force her to take the last $50. No wonder she was not popular with some other vets! Last July, Bailey had a run in with a slow-moving car and fractured four ribs. Jan had ceased practicing, and I took him to the all-hours weekend vet
clinic at Gungahlin. Two visits to that vet and to the northside vet, several X-rays, and twonight accommodation and observation later, the bill came to $2,700. The vets and staff were wonderful, and I even got a card two weeks letter asking how “sweet Bailey was going” (very well). The service was excellent, but I couldn’t help thinking what would happen if I could not pay. They asked me if I wanted an X-ray and several other services I felt were essential – but what would’ve happened if I couldn’t afford them? No animal should suffer just because its owner can’t afford vet services. Our local Assembly members should look into this. Is the RSPCA the solution? Jan would just provide the service regardless. Jan has had some serious family and other issues, and as a result of her love for animals, continued to practice when she was not meant to, and was fined as a result. She is now elderly, and can’t practice at any rate. My good friend greyhound trainer Alan Tutt (who always took his greyhounds to Jan), retired magistrate and horse lover Peter Dingwall (who always took his horses to Jan), and I have resolved to jointly nominate Jan for this year’s Senior Canberran of the year, and also for consideration for an Order of Australia award. Over the decades, she has saved thousands of animals’ lives. If any reader wants to help out in this regard, please email news@newstimemedia.com.au with your details, and I’ll get back to you. canberradaily.com.au

Day Clubs provide a welcoming space for seniors to engage in meaningful activities and foster new connections.
Goodwin Day Club in Queanbeyan is one of only a few social venues in the region designed specifially for seniors.
A new home for Goodwin’s Queanbeyan Day Club Well-loved seniors’ club, Goodwin Day Club, has relocated to a new home in Queanbeyan. Having recently reopened its doors, the new location has undergone a range of renovations to meet the needs of seniors, making the club one of only a handful of social venues in Queanbeyan and the ACT designed specifically for seniors. Queanbeyan Day Club Coordinator Jacoba Czoban says that everyone’s very excited about the new location. “It’s bright and spacious, everyone loves it! And we’re still centrally located near all the shops and a short walk from some great parks.” Day Clubs provide a welcoming space for seniors to engage in meaningful activities and to foster new connections. It's a place to socialise in an environment where clients' needs and interests are prioritised. Lionel, who has been attending Queanbeyan Day Club for ten years, says Day Club has changed his attitude towards life. “It’s given me new friends and each morning I’m excited to get out of the house and see everybody.”
John, a Day Clubber of nine years, agrees. “I’ve met great friends through Day Club. It’s always good to see the bus pull into my driveway.” For clients like Maia, joining Day Clubs has allowed her to overcome the challenges of leaving the house as she doesn’t have access to a car. Being able to engage in new and exciting activities, with transport covered, has become a highlight of her day. There are many different reasons people come to Day Club. Some people attend because they’re looking for something to do with their day, or looking to expand their social circle, and some are there because their family member needs some respite from caring. “Whatever reason people attend, once they’re here, the reason doesn’t matter. Everybody just has a great time,” says Jacoba. “We’ll pick up clients in the morning and drive them home in the afternoon, with activities, lunch, and all sorts of things in between. It doesn’t even matter where they live because we have locations in Monash and Crace too.”
The new location means that Goodwin Day Club Queanbeyan is now able to accept new members. “Everyone’s welcome. People can access the club through the Commonwealth Home Support Programme or through independent means,” says Jacoba. “And people can come however frequently they like, from as little as one day a week to each weekday.” When asked what she loves most about Day Club, Jacoba says, “I love being able to see clients come here and blossom. Every day I look forward to seeing their confidence build and it is so rewarding to know I am a link in the chain that provides support to this amazing group of people.” To learn more about Goodwin Day Clubs, contact Goodwin on 02 6175 5650 or head to goodwin.org.au/day-clubs A: 114 Crawford Street, Queanbeyan T: 02 6175 5650 E: community@goodwin.org.au W: goodwin.org.au/day-clubs
Solutions for social isolation Social isolation is a difficult topic. It’s often hard to see, and it’s often hard for people to admit to, but it’s a problem that is affecting thousands of people in our community. It’s currently estimated that around one in five seniors in Australia are experiencing social isolation, with weekdays being exceptionally difficult. Not only is the risk of social isolation greater for seniors in our community, but the outcomes can also have far-greater negative consequences on all areas of one’s life, impacting people both cognitively and physically.
The factors that contribute to social isolation are many and varied, but the solution doesn’t need to be complicated. Introducing Goodwin Day Clubs; social communities for seniors, offering the opportunity to create new friendships, stay active, and get out of the house. With daily activities, games, light exercise, meals and outings, Goodwin Day Clubs provide an active and engaging space for seniors to enrich their days, all in purpose-built environments with a team of supportive staff should you need a hand. Open weekdays, Goodwin
Day Clubs provide morning pickups and afternoon dropoffs, as well as hot meals, drinks, snacks and good times. Give the team a call on 02 6175 5650 or head to goodwin.org.au/day-clubs to learn more.

Enter the dragon Lunar New Year festivities start this Saturday, 10 February. To welcome the Year of the Dragon with prosperity, here are some eggs-cellent Asian-inspired recipes to help you celebrate. Wok on!
Prepare your steamed bun dough according to the packet, but use half the sugar recommended. Set aside to rest while you prepare the filling. In a small bowl add eggs, shaoxing, sesame oil, white pepper, and salt. Beat eggs to combine. In a small fry pan over medium-high heat add a little neutral oil and cook the eggs, scrambling and breaking them up into small pea-sized pieces.
Once cooked, add these to a large bowl with the chives, noodles, mushroom, salt and white pepper. Set aside to cool slightly. Cut the steamed bun dough into 12 equal pieces and roll into balls. Place the balls under a teatowel to prevent them from drying out. Place a large steamer on to preheat. Take one dough ball, flatten, and roll it from the edge to the centre to create a UFO-shaped disc. Roll a few times all over until it’s a bit bigger than your palm. Place two tablespoons of filling into the centre, then gather the edges and pinch all the way around to seal. Shape the bun by gently squeezing it into an oblong golf ball, then press gently onto a bench to create a flat bottom. Repeat until all remaining balls of dough have been used. Steam the buns over medium heat for 10 minutes then remove the lid to allow water to evaporate. Replace the lid and steam again for another 5-7 minutes until fluffy and cooked through. These can be eaten hot or at room temperature and reheated well in the microwave.
Best Golden Fried Rice Cook: 25 mins | Serves: 4 4 cups cooked long-grain white rice 5 eggs 2 tsp XO sauce 2 Tbsp olive oil 2 green onions, finely chopped 100g sliced ham, shredded or chopped 1 red capsicum, sliced 1 cup (120g) frozen peas Salt and ground white pepper, to taste Extra sliced green onions, to serve Asian side sauce (optional) 1 Tbsp soy sauce 2 tsp hoisin sauce 1 tsp XO Sauce Stir rice with a fork to break up grains. Separate 3 egg yolks into a small bowl. Reserve whites in another medium bowl. Add yolks to rice. Mix well until rice grains 22

are coated in egg. Break remaining eggs into reserved whites. Add XO sauce. Whisk well to combine. Heat 2 tsp oil in a large wok over medium heat. Add half the egg mixture. Swirl to coat base of wok. Cook for about 1 minute, or until egg has set. Slide onto a large plate. Roll and slice thinly. Repeat with oil and egg mixture. Add remaining oil to same hot wok. Add rice mixture, onions, ham, capsicum and peas. Stir-fry for about 5 minutes, or until vegetables are tender and rice is golden. Season with salt and pepper. Stir in omelette. Garnish with extra green onions. Serve rice with sauce if using. To make sauce, combine ingredients in a small bowl and mix well. canberradaily.com.au
time out Queers tells tales of heart and history at ACT Hub A century of love, heartbreak and history come to life as Everyman Theatre reprises its acclaimed production of Queers at ACT Hub on 14-24 February. The Kingston theatre space is transformed into a quintessential British pub, The Prince’s Arms, allowing for an immersive experience of human connection. Queers was curated by Mark Gatiss for British television as a way to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Sexual Offences Act being passed in 1967. The legislation legalised homosexual acts between men aged over 21 in private. Penning one of the monologues himself, Gatiss, known for writing for shows like Sherlock and Doctor Who, commissioned other writers to capture moments of queer history. These moments start in 1917 with a solider returning from war to the 1957 Wolfenden Report, the 1980s HIV/AIDS crisis, and ending with a groom preparing to marry after the legislation of same-sex marriage. “These really distinct, fully realised and fully
fleshed out characters represent a different point in queer history and a different perspective on what it was to be queer at that time. A lovely mix of men, women, queer people, allies, people wrestling with sexuality, gender identity - a diverse array of perspectives,” says actor Joel Horwood. Stepping into the 1980s during the height of the HIV/AIDS crisis, Horwood performs More Anger written by Brian Fillis. The character is an actor who finds himself tired of being cast as a dying gay man over and over, while his loved ones and friends are dying around him. “That’s his gripe, then he gets to play a role who’s not dying and isn’t going to ever die but then it turns out that character is astonishingly boring,” they say. The piece is close to home for Horwood as an actor. In the monologue, the character questions what will be left when the crisis slows down and there isn’t a demand for the dying gay man role. Horwood says we are seeing more and more multi-dimensional queer characters in our media. “It was for a long time so rare to see rich,
complex stories about queer people being told where we weren’t being sidelined as supporting characters, usually the sort of funny best friend; to see these fully realised, incredibly human characters speak to the rich human experience where we don’t have to be afraid of presenting unlikable characters.” The human history of the production is what Horwood hopes resonates with the audience. They want people to leave with a deeper understanding of what queer people before experienced. “It’s so important for young people, both queer and straight, to see what it was like 100 years ago to be queer, we take so many things for granted these days. I’d love for young audience members that come to the show to come away from it and just have a little bit more gratitude for the huge amount of progress we’ve had as a society. A bit more respect for the generations who came before us and had to fight through difficult times.” Spend an evening at The Prince’s Arms in Queers at ACT Hub on 14-24 February; acthub.com.au - Jessica Cordwell

Book talk This week, Jeff Popple reviews three romantic tales for Valentine’s Day. More of Jeff’s reviews can be found on his blog: murdermayhemandlongdogs.com Snowy Mountains Dawn by Alissa Callen
Harper Collins, $29.99 Fans of rural romance will enjoy Snowy Mountains Dawn, the latest country tale by bestselling author Alissa Callen. Set in a charming small town, it is a feel-good story about a diehard country girl and a big city financier with no time for love. When Wyatt Killian hires horsewoman Brenna Lancaster to lead his horse-riding corporate retreat, he is not expecting for his attention to be distracted from work, or for him to become involved in Brenna’s quest to unearth the truth about a historic family feud and old bushranger mystery. An enjoyable story about community ties and love.
Peppercorn House by Nicole Hurley-Moore
Allen & Unwin, $32.99 Also full of country friendships and secrets is Peppercorn House by Nicole Hurley-Moore. Winnifred Knightly is a fixture in Kangaroo Ridge and the owner of the faded family mansion known as Peppercorn House. When she discovers that she only has months to live, Winnifred sets out to test her matchmaking skills by bringing together her ‘adopted grandson’, Felix, and her favourite aged-care worker, Jasmine. Nicole is a skilled practitioner of small town romance, and her latest novel is another engaging tale about family secrets, second chance love and rural living. A wonderful read for a late summer weekend.
It’s Probably You by Jayne Denker
Simon & Schuster, $32.99 Offering a bit more sparkle and humour is Jayne Denker’s It’s Probably You. Plus-sized Gillian is happily divorced and tired of dating apps and the lacklustre dates, and fat shamers, that come with it. She is happy to work in her garden and produce beautiful displays, until a gardening competition pits her against new neighbour, Noah. What starts out as mutual dislike and fiery banter, gradually merges into something else as the pair realise that they may be the perfect match. Full of down-to-earth characters and nicely realised locations, It’s Probably You is an enjoyable piece of escapism.

Now showing Argylle (M)
Secret spy Agent Argyle (Henry Cavill) and his team are burned by their boss Fowler (Richard E. Grant), which is soon revealed to be part of the latest novel by author Elly Conway (Bryce Dallas Howard). On a train journey to meet her mum Ruth (Catherine O’Hara) to go over her final novel’s ending, Elly meets an actual spy, Aidan (Sam Rockwell), who explains that Elly is in danger due to her uncanny knack of predicting real-world espionage happenings! Director Matthew Vaughn of The Kingsman franchise is at it again, albeit from another point of view. The hyper-stylised world of Agent Argyle takes the mickey out of the blockbuster spy genre while using all of its tropes, especially casting the very Bond-like Henry Cavill. Conversely, protagonist Elly is as far

away from an adventurer as one can get: a socially awkward and anxious author who hides from the world safely behind her keyboard with her cat Alfie. It is only with the appearance of real-life spy Aidan that Elly starts on a hero’s journey of self-discovery, where fact and fiction start to unravel. The movie is indulgent in its ensemble cast, run-time, and budget, and hosts Vaughn’s penchant for comic-book shenanigans with a quirky, perverse sense of humour and a story that keeps you on your toes! Verdict: While the movie is considered a box-office bomb, fans of Vaughn and movies such as Romancing the Stone (1984) and The Lost City (2022) will have a great time here! - Luke McWilliams themovieclub.net

Take 5 with Hayley Jensen, playing at Googfest Canberra’s Golden Guitar nominee and Australian Idol Alumni Hayley Jensen returns home to perform at Googfest on Saturday 10 February. CW’s Jessica Cordwell caught up with Ms Jensen to discuss the music festival going country this year.
1
Tell us about your show at Googfest. Get ready for a high-energy countypop/rock show! I’ll be performing songs from my ARIA #1 Country Album Breakin’ Hearts as well as a few newer songs and a sprinkling of covers that I love to play live with the band.
2
Are you excited that this year’s event is dedicated to country tunes? As a former Canberran, I’ve had
my eye on Googfest for a number of years as a festival that I’d love to be part of and I’m super excited that it’s going to be a country music affair this year. Country festivals are a LOT of fun and the country music fans really know how to bring the party! I’m looking forward to it being a massive event this year, and performing alongside my buddy Travis Collins, you guys are in for a real treat.
3
Why do you think Aussie’s love country music? Country music is so diverse these days. You’ve got everything from traditional to country mixed with blues, fused with pop, R’n’B and rock. The thread that runs through it all though is the art of storytelling. I find most country music fans and artists to be super down-to-earth people too.
4
Do you have a favourite song to perform? I have a medley/mashup that I perform of one of my songs I Took You Back and In the Air Tonight, I love performing it live! As soon as people hear that massive drum solo, everyone is singing (or screaming) along. Such great energy on and off stage.
5
What’s next for you? I’m currently working on writing and producing some brand-new music and have a pretty jam-packed

Eating disorders in middle age When thinking of the stereotype of someone with an eating disorder, most people will describe an adolescent female who is underweight. We don’t think about women or men in their 40s and 50s with eating disorders, but this is a common period of life when a person can continue to suffer from an eating disorder they’ve had for many years or develop one for the first time. An eating disorder is a severe mental health condition where a person is significantly distressed by and preoccupied with their size, shape and weight. This influences their eating (under or overeating), exercise behaviour (such as spending hours exercising to compensate for eating), as well as their happiness, anxiety and ability to socialise (not wanting to eat in front of others is common). Some even turn to the use of weight loss medications, which can be dangerous, abuse of laxatives or diet pills, or deliberately vomiting after eating. The reason why it is common in middle age is due to all the changes occurring at this time. For

women, it may be triggered by changes in hormones and metabolism associated with menopause or pre-menopause. For both men and women, it can be due to a perception that they are moving further and further away from ‘idealised’ images of youth and thinness portrayed in the media, or muscularity for men. Clients I see in my practice often talk about feeling invisible, no longer getting positive attention for their appearance or getting unwanted attention due to their size and feeling unattractive. It’s often harder in middle age to keep fit and healthy due to work and family commitments and so weight gain is common, which can lead some to feel very dissatisfied with their bodies and preoccupied with losing weight. Binge eating, feeling a loss of control over one’s eating and eating for emotional reasons can become more common in middle age as stress builds up. So, what can adults in middle and older age do to help themselves? It’s about recognising there
may be a problem and being brave and getting help, talking to your doctor or a psychologist about your worries. As well as working on your perception of yourself and your body, celebrate your body for what it can do, not what it looks like. Focus on your qualities and strengths - what your friends and family love about you. Get away from social media that promotes diet culture and unrealistic images of what men and women are supposed to look like. Embrace your uniqueness, do nice things for your body, make it feel good and talk to it in respectful ways. Some helpful resources for eating disorder specific help include the Butterfly Foundation. You might also like to read my self-help book, Positive Bodies: Loving the Skin You’re In, on improving your relationship with your body. Experience pain with running?
Grow a mullet for Mental Health Black Dog Institute is calling on Aussies to show they’re all ears by participating in Mullets for Mental Health this April. Growing those luscious locks is a great way to show support for the one in five Australians experiencing mental illness issues each year. “In Australia, suicide is the leading cause of death for people aged 15-44. For every single suicide death, there are 20 times the number of attempts,” says Black Dog Institute researcher Dr Sandersan Onie. “Recent research has shown most people who attempt to end their life don’t want to die and are looking for any reason to continue living. What that tells us is any intervention, whether it’s a tap on the shoulder, a text message or even an internet pop-up, holds the potential to save someone’s life.” Since 2020, over 30,000 participants have grown mullets and

raised close to $12 million to support mental health research. “Mullets for Mental Health is a fun and engaging way to start those important mental health conversations that are critical to supporting your mates. It’s a great way to show your fellow Aussies that you’re all ears for better mental health and suicide prevention in our communities,” says Campaign Manager at the Black Dog Institute, Tom Farrar. Funds raised support novel and innovative suicide prevention programs, assist in the research and development of digital mental health tools and apps for adults and children, and help community presenters reach school students to talk about mental health. LEO JUL 23 – AUG 23
Look out for a busy – or at least intense time, especially on St Valentine’s Day. First though, this weekend’s new moon will present the opportunity to turn a corner in your personal life, and at work or health-wise for mid-February-born Aquarians.
This will be a good week to invest in your relationships, and to re-imagine certain agreements. You may be surprised by a colleague’s or a partner’s news. A change of health circumstances or of routine will merit care and attention.
PISCES FEB 20 – MAR 20
VIRGO AUG 24 – SEPT 23
Saturday’s new moon supermoon brings the chance to improve your work or health. Just be careful with communications and travel this weekend to avoid delays or misunderstandings. St Valentine’s Day may bring a degree of nostalgia or messages from the past.
This may feel like an intense week, not least due to stress in communications and even unexpected developments. Someone close – and perhaps even you – may experience intense emotions or a transformation in circumstance.
ARIES MAR 21 – APR 20
LIBRA SEPT 24 – OCT 23
If developments seem to slow you down this is nevertheless a good time for planning and organising your finances and projects. This weekend’s new moon supermoon will also provide insight into your involvement with a group, friend or organisation.
A business or personal partner may surprise you this week and the more you can find ways to develop good communications, the better for you. A personal or domestic situation is likely to be fairly emotional or intense, so be prepared.
TAURUS APR 21 – MAY 21
SCORPIO OCT 24 – NOV 22
It’s a good week to maintain a practical, down-to-earth approach to logistics, especially those concerning your career, general direction in life and status. Some Taureans will experience an intense or transformative development towards the 14th.
St Valentine’s Day will be a significant turning point. For some, this will be due to developments at home, with family or property; for others regarding travel, communications or a business decision. Keep discussions clear this week for best results.
GEMINI MAY 22 – JUN 21
SAGITTARIUS NOV 23 – DEC 21
Your sign’s ruler Mercury’s entry into Aquarius will encourage you to make headway with legal, travel and study matters. Just be careful with communications to avoid mix-ups. St Valentine’s Day may bring a surprise or intense development your way.
A change of pace or of place may be disruptive, but your efforts to boost your circumstances will be worthwhile. A surprising development and the opportunity to begin a fresh financial or personal chapter in your life will be rewarding long-term.
CANCER JUN 22 – JUL 22
CAPRICORN DEC 22 – JAN 20
It’s a good week to be careful with communications, especially if you have already experienced some disagreements. You may be tempted to rush into a relationship but are better to consider your circumstances in detail first.
Developments in your personal life may be surprising. A degree of upheaval may be expected this week, but if you remain focussed on your aims and goals, you will attain them. Be prepared to see your finances in a new light.

Embraced by Mother Nature Goobarragandra NSW 2/21 Walls Creek Road East This architectural masterpiece in the NSW Snowy Mountains was featured on Grand Designs Australia in 2022 – and it’s easy to see why! The home has been cleverly built into the side of the hill to not only to minimise its footprint but also to naturally regulate the internal climate. It will never get to zero degrees or 40 degrees inside as it’s insulated by Mother Nature’s earthy doona. Concealed by soil and grass, the home is cleverly hidden from a bird’s eye view. This bespoke residence has been meticulously designed to provide a contemporary and superbly finished living space that is not only sympathetic to the surrounding environment but is also 100 per cent off the grid and accessibility friendly. future-proof purchase, this is a home for anyone and everyone, says agents Andy Greenberger and Jane Macken. Their favourite parts of this property are the breathtaking views – which can be enjoyed from “both the bedrooms, bathrooms and large open plan living area. The whole northern facade is a glass wall without interruption as the home has been designed to embrace these stunning views. The landscape becomes the fourth wall of the home. Layers of glass, insect screens, sheer curtains and blockout curtains give complete control over privacy and sun without impacting the clean lines of the facade.” When it comes to location, you’re “on the doorstep of the Snowy Mountains, surrounded by rolling hills with river frontage and an abundance of nature. This secluded location is without
