Feel the heart of agriculture at the Royal Canberra Show
E
xcitement fills the air this time of year as locals get ready for the return of the Royal Canberra Show, taking over Exhibition Park across three days, 2325 February. Some old favourites are marking their return after a year or two off, while some wonderful new additions will showcase Australia’s deep connection to agriculture. One of these new additions is Adelina La Vita, CEO of the Royal National Capital Agricultural Society. A Canberran through and through, she is excited to share what they have in store for visitors in 2024. For the first time, guests will be able to experience The Outback Stockman’s Show, which Ms La Vita describes as “orchestrated chaos”; she is sure viewers won’t be able to look away. “It’s a really fun show with horsemanship, working dogs, a lot of crowd participation and there’s a little bit of an educational spin on it,” she says.
Woodchop returns
Offering something for every generation, Ms La 6

Vita says our love for the Show changes as we grow: from youngsters excited to cuddle creatures in the Farmyard Nursery to teens drawn to the bright lights and fast rides of Sideshow Alley, before becoming adults who appreciate the agricultural aspects on display. There are some things you love no matter your age, such as watching feats of human endurance like the woodchop competitions. The woodchop returns this year supported by a generous donation from The Tradies in Dickson. “That also helps us be able to provide prize money, the logs, and create a big experience on site,” says Ms La Vita. Woodchop is an activity that is critical to the lifestyle and agricultural roots of our regional communities, explains Ms La Vita, that’s one of the reasons its return is so welcome. “The Show is all about our agricultural pursuits’ – where we’ve come from and looking at how we continue to foster education and engagement. While there is an entertainment aspect of the Show, that is how people used to chop down trees so they could provide firewood or build carts.” Axewoman Steph Radovanovic says now is

a great time for women in the sport as history changes and more and more shows embrace female participants. “We’re getting more notice, promotion, shows putting on women’s events that never used to happen because we’ve got the women to provide it. We have 11 women choppers for Hall [ACT] and district which I believe is the largest number of women in a club in Australia.” Ms Radovanovic competed in her second-ever competition at the Royal Canberra Show in 2022. She says it was intimidating and exhilarating, and the crowd was incredibly supportive. “They would be sitting there waiting for you. Even though I came dead last, the crowd roared even louder for me at the end because I got through it, than the guys at the beginning,” she smiles. “Our mindset is: no matter how hard it is, no matter how tired we are, we don’t let the log win; it is just about finishing it. You get your amazing quick cut through the log in record time, that’s got the show appeal to it, but then you see people who are slogging away and they’re not giving up … I think there is a lot to be said for a sport that celebrates both ends of the spectrum,” adds Meg Keogh, axewoman. Split into three primary disciplines, competitors battle it out in underhand, where they chop the wood they are standing on, chopping into a standing block, and sawing. Ms Radovanovic will canberradaily.com.au

be competing in the underhand and sawing (and strongman). Ms Keogh, who is entering the Royal Canberra Show for the first time, competes in underhand, sawing and novice – and says you can’t predict what’s going to happen. “You never know when you show up to an event where the logs are wrapped, you can be the best woodchopper ever and you can unwrap a log that’s got knots in it and then the person next to you could have very little experience and get the one with termites through it,” Ms Keogh smiles. Ms Radovanovic is thrilled to see that the woodchop has returned to a role of honour at agricultural shows, where people recognise you and want to discuss the sport. Meanwhile, Ms Keogh says they are finding more and more women approach them. “Women come and say, ‘How did you get started in this?’ or they look and they see you’re not some spritely 21-year-old and think ‘Maybe I could do this’. I don’t think any of us expected that kind of reaction, and it’s been really lovely – women empowering other women,” Ms Keogh smiles. Both axewomen agree that the wood chop is a spectacle like no other, requiring a fierce combination of grit, skill of technique, strength and stamina. “You’ll see such a smorgasbord of ages competing, of men and women of all sizes, of all different backgrounds and levels of capabilities, all canberradaily.com.au
bonding over this crazy axe-wielding sport,” smiles Ms Radovanovic.
Animals at the Show
More than 200 sheep also return to the Show this year, ready to be judged by a panel of experts. Animals and their handlers travel from across the nation to participate in the Royal Canberra Show. Vistors will be able the see the best of sheep, horses, alpacas and cattle, as well as smaller creatures like cats, dogs and guinea pigs. Don’t miss your chance to see various animals in action during the Flyball Show, Grand Parade, pig racing and more. At the heart of all the animal competitions and livestock on show is the fostering of education. Even before the Show opens, Ms La Vita says they invite agricultural students to be mentored by the cattle judges. “Taking younger students and ensuring over generations they are mentored and guided so they can take the lead as they grow and we ensure that agriculture is alive, well, thriving and sustainable for generations to come,” she says. These educational opportunities include milking demonstrations, sheep shearing, learning how to make cheese, the chance to throw a slab of clay on a pottery wheel, crafts and the Science Extravaganza Show. Children under the age of six are invited to experience the wonder of the Show free of charge.
The Royal Canberra Show returns to Exhibition Park from Friday 23 to Sunday 25 February. Image supplied.
Food and drink
Classic show food like dagwood dogs and hot chips can be found around the grounds. In addition to the crowd favourite, chip-on-a-stick, keep an eye out for mushroom-on-a-stick. If you prefer to sit in the shade and enjoy a meal, head to the designated food areas. In the World Flavours section, you travel the globe via flavoursome dishes. Sit back and watch a show at the Capital Hill food and drink area where you’ll find the Capital Brewery bar. “You can sit on the hill with your beer and a barbecue and look out onto the main arena and watch the horse competition and other entertainment,” says Ms La Vita.
Transport and parking
Hoping to encourage the use of public transport to help ease congestion and battles for parking, Transport Canberra is offering anyone with Royal Canberra Show tickets free transport on buses and light rail. The revenue from the paid parking goes to support the local Scouts and Rotary clubs. Those with mobility issues don’t have to miss any of the action as a regular shuttle runs from the Well Station Road entry to the Mallee Pavilion. Canberra’s ANU gives swift response to Tay Tay In case you’ve been living under a rock for the past few weeks, Taylor Swift is in Australia this week. Whether or not you’re a ‘Swifty’, this is a major deal and as you read this, a PhD student from the ANU is presenting a paper at the “Swiftposium” in Melbourne - an academic conference devoted to Taylor Swift. Madeline Pentland, of the ANU’s School of History, will join scholars from seven Australian and NZ universities to discuss Swift’s profound impact on gender, fandom, pop culture, literature, the economy and music industry. She’ll also catch Taylor Swift’s concert while she’s there, purely for research purposes. “My subject is women in Australian politics from the ‘90s and my paper is on political speech using Taylor Swift lyrics,” Madeline says. “I take a look at why politicians are saying these lyrics in parliament. “The most famous one is Scott Morrison, who has used Shake it Off lyrics in parliament, once when he was treasurer and once when he was Prime Minister. He gives that analogy of ‘forget the past’, ‘shake it off’. It’s an example of how a politician can use sayings like this easily in parliament to get a point

across, relatability. As Taylor Swift grew in popularity, so did her lyrics in the Australian Parliament Hansard. “Politicians were attaching to her popularity and engaging with a younger audience,” Madeline says. “[Former NSW Senator] Sam Dastyari in 2015 went viral in a global sense when he recited three verses of Blank Space in the Senate after the second leadership spill. He was saying the deputy leader Julie Bishop should have a theme song, then he landed on Blank Space, a modern soliloquy for the Liberal Party.” Madeline is not alone in her fascination with Tay Tay; the ANU has its own Taylor Swift Society (est. 2021) complete with its own constitution and executive committee. Society president, Mikayla Simpson, has somehow managed to buy a hotly sought-after ticket to Swift’s Sydney show. “It sounds ridiculous when I say it out loud but we borrowed my mum’s colleague’s husband’s Amex card to get a VIP in the Amex pre-sale,” she says. ”It was hard to get.” As president of the ANU Taylor Swift Appreciation

WITH BILL STEFANIAK AM RFD FORMER ACT OPPOSITION LEADER
The grass is longer in the ACT Great cartoon in last Tuesday’s Australian of innocent Australian citizen Dr Yang Hengjun, recently sentenced to death in China, talking to an Australian consular official. Dr Yang says, “If only Australia had a strong man that could help me,” to which the consular official replies, “The best we can do is a handsome boy.” I’m not sure if Ukrainian President Zelenskyy made the right call in getting rid of popular Ukrainian General Zaluzhnyi and replacing him with General Syrskyi. Zaluzhnyi seems to have done a good job so far in difficult circumstances. If the West abandons Ukraine now, one wonders whether we deserve to be free ourselves. However, as we approach this year’s local election, the issue currently on most Canberrans’ minds is the length of the grass in our city. Last week, I went to Wagga for a wedding and was highly impressed with the wellmaintained parks, roadsides, and municipal gardens. Likewise with Gundagai – the grass
was cut and everything looked well cared for. It never fails to surprise me how apparently simple it is for the country towns that surround Canberra to keep their towns neat and tidy, and the complete inability of our local government to keep the grass in our city mown. At roundabouts, it’s positively dangerous in some places, as you can’t see cars approaching from different directions. I feel like getting out my mower and helping out myself. The local government obviously doesn’t place a priority on keeping the national capital neat and tidy. I must say that when we first got selfgovernment in 1989, the then-Urban Services Minister, the vivacious Ellnor Grassby, was also a bit tardy in mowing the grass, so my old mate from the Residents Rally, the late Hector Kinloch, and I decided to help her out by staging a stunt outside The Canberra Times in Fyshwick and cutting the grass on the nature strip there with scissors. Great picture in the CT, and it had the desired effect – Ellnor got her
department to lift its game, pronto. However, I doubt if the local city services minister (Tara Cheyne MLA) feels the same urgency – especially as her lot has been in power for 22 years. Another thing I noticed along William Hovell Drive, Melba, was the rough and ready attempt to cut some grass, but leave about 5 to 10 metres of uncut grass and débris around the trees in the nature strip areas. It looked very untidy – indeed, it looked as if no one had done anything to tidy up around the trees for years. Mr Barr has announced a further slide by the ACT into debt, and we are currently re-paying $2 million a day on interest on the loans this government has taken out to pay for things like its tram extensions. It really is time for a change and a clean-out of the Assembly. A term in opposition would allow the Labor party a chance to recharge its batteries, if nothing else. This Green/Labor coalition has not been good for the city.

to the editor Support for Jan Spate When I think about Jan Spate (CW 8 February p16), so many words of her qualities and attributes come to mind; passionate, caring, kind, generous, non-judgemental, animal rescuer, and the epitome of an animal advocate. These words are really just a summary of who Jan Spate is and continues to be. Many years ago, when our family lived in Murrumbateman, I recall Jan coming out to our property on a Xmas day after we found our cat, Muffin, looking very poorly; it was no trouble for her at all it seemed, and there was no such thing as a public holiday surcharge. And with our dog, Melissa, Jan regularly undertook surgery to remove polyps on her ears. And, like Bill Stefaniak stated, it was next to impossible to pay Jan the appropriate money we owed her. When our daughter, Brontë was about 9 years old, she started ‘working’ with Jan during some of the school holidays. Brontë would come
home and enthusiastically tell us what she and Jan had been up to during the day; washing snakes, helping to deliver calves, putting down animals in distress, desexing cats and dogs, amongst many other things. Brontë idolised Jan, and her relationship with Jan only served to develop and intensify Brontë’s love of all creatures, great and small. In fact, before her unexpected death, Brontë became a volunteer at Heavy Horse Heaven (a refuge for rescue horses) and a foster carer for rescue dogs. Our dog, Allan, is one of those rescue dogs. I have no doubt, and it is my strong belief that Jan is worthy and deserving of receiving an OAM, AM, Senior Citizen of the Year, or any other award which recognises her invaluable contribution to the ACT and NSW community in the field of animal care, both domestic and pastoral animals. - Janine Haskins

It subsidises public transport operating costs by $80 million per year. If the government values healthy active travel as much as it values polluting public transport, its 2024 budget will include more than $560 million for active travel. So far the government has announced only $94 million of active travel funding (ACT Government releases Active Travel Plan, canberradaily.com.au 2 February). Anthony Albanese must be a very slow learner. He tried out his ‘do it my way, or no way’ approach with the Voice referendum and ended up with egg all over his face. He now wants to do the same with the stage 3 tax cuts, by stubbornly refusing to negotiate with the crossbench regarding increasing welfare payments to compensate those who missed out altogether in the revision as they do not earn enough to pay tax, and who were disgracefully disregarded by this politically motivated government. The stumbling journey of EVs The forecast triumph of electric vehicles (EVs) is facing headwinds. In the US last year, Ford lost $US64,731 for each EV it sold - almost as much as the selling price for the top-of-the-line Mustang Mach-E. GM is also facing difficulties and, like Ford, has re-jigged its production plans back towards the internal combustion engine. Also, mounting losses have forced Hertz to radically reduce its EV fleet. And in Europe, reduced subsidies for EVs brought a 16 per cent sales fall in Germany last year with a further 9 per cent decline expected this year. In France, Renault was forced to abort plans to float its EV division on the stock exchange. Electric commercial vehicle makers have fared even worse. Several, including Volvo’s subsidiary and the UK’s Arrival (valued at $23 billion just three years ago) have gone bankrupt. Many have blamed inadequate support from governments for these disappointing outcomes. But this begs the question: why if they are so superior do they need such assistance? Steamships did not receive government assistance
in order to displace sail ships, nor did motor cars in replacing horse-drawn vehicles (in fact, they faced regulatory impediments). And, unlike EV charging stations, today’s petrol stations were also rolled out without government support. Australian EV sales have grown rapidly and comprised 7 per cent of new cars last year (with hybrids another 8 per cent). Even so, motor organisations complain about inadequate government support, including requirements on EVs to pay, like other cars, a road user charge. But there are considerable subsidies in place up to $5,000 per car in NSW and $3,000 in most other states. The ACT has a range of bonuses and discounts for EVs including an interest-free loan, stamp-duty waivers and free registration. And, as part of its plethora of measures ostensibly designed to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, the Commonwealth last year introduced an Electric Car Discount, which it said will save “up to $11,000 a year on a $50,000 electric vehicle”. This month, Energy Minister Chris Bowen announced his New Vehicle Efficiency Standard.
Billed as “Delivering Australians more choice of cars to save on fuel”, new standards will force vehicle suppliers to re-weight their offerings in favour of low fuel models – in effect, suppliers will face a higher tax the more internal combustion cars they sell, which they will pass on to customers. Like most current policies, this has been forged through the prism of averting the global warming bogeyman. In support, Mr Bowen claimed that modelling had revealed that the new regulations will mean Australians will accrue around $143 billion in benefits by 2050. He said that the measures will bring a $1,000 saving per vehicle (continued page 18)

With ample justification, cynics would recall how Mr Albanese - “I know because we have done the modelling” - had claimed that the government’s additional regulatory measures on electricity supply would bring a $275 reduction in electricity bills. That projected reduction of 15 per cent for 2023 turned out to be an increase of over 20 per cent. And few would bet their house on the national regulator’s forecast of lower prices in 2024 – indeed the ACT’s regulator is foreshadowing a 17 per cent rise! Clearly electric cars are a permanent fixture in the vehicle mix. They offer features like faster acceleration and, at least with present taxation arrangements, lower fuel costs. initial costs and range. While some manufacturers see EVs as supplanting today’s petrol and diesel models, others, notably Toyota, are sceptical about that possibility. But the ultimate test should be that of the consumer. Political and bureaucratic elites are telling us that for our own good they have the thumbs on the scale weighting decisions in favour of EVs. Basically, they are saying consumers do not share their wisdom and cannot be trusted to freely make their own purchasing decisions. Aside from this being a massive infringement on individual liberty, our political masters should have been humbled by their poor calls on some recent issues: think COVID, The Voice, as well as electricity policies. Instead, with unabated arrogance, they move on to fresh areas where they can extend the nanny state.

Another important aspect of rhythm which is interwoven into Orana’s educational program is transition. This is evident in the new year as students transition from one year level to the next as they grow in capacity and responsibility. A meaningful example of this is the Rose Ceremony which celebrates the journey the children have been on so far in Kindergarten and now transitioning into Class One where the more productive academically. formal learning and the loving authority of the class The ‘Main Lesson’ is a two-hour lesson each teacher period begins. T
here is a great feeling of optimism and purpose as the students and staff at Orana Steiner School settle into the new school year. In Steiner education, the new year is not just a time for resolutions but a celebration of growth and self-discovery. Students are encouraged to reflect on their past achievements and challenges, which helps to grow a sense of responsibility and resilience, and then to look forward to the exciting opportunities to learn and grow that each new day brings. This holistic approach instills in children the belief that every moment is an opportunity for renewal and growth, and that there is a natural rhythm to not only the year, but to each day, each season and each developmental phase of our human life. The natural world demonstrates rhythm through the seasons, but everyone will find some form of rhythm in their own daily patterns as well, and in Steiner education, the rhythm of the day is integral in Orana’s educational approach. At Orana, the morning is recognised as a time of focus where students are fresh and most

Wonderburger is a joint venture between Olek Czezowski, Andrew Olejniczak and Vlada Makic and CW was invited along to try the food, leaving feeling very impressed, and equally as full. The broad menu consists of a range of burgers, fried chicken, a hotdog, thick shakes, soft serve ice cream, sundaes, fries, onion rings, sweet potato chips, jalapeno poppers and more. Most of the menu items are simple yet are done so well, allowing the quality of the ingredients to shine through. The burgers are the main attraction and they have options for all tastes. The Wonder burger is a classic style, featuring a thick, seasoned beef patty along with cheese, lettuce, onion, pickles, relish and their house sauce. time out Tricks, laughs and power dynamics hit the stage in Stunt Double From a bar fight to a car chase and dingo attack, audience members are transported right to the middle of the set of a 1970s Aussie action movie in Stunt Double. The exciting, immersive theatre experience makes its mark on the Canberra Theatre Centre stage on 14-16 March. Created by The Farm, a contemporary dance theatre company that aims to push the boundaries of what contemporary performance is and where it can be seen. Inspired by power, fame and the exploitation of the stunt industry, this fast-paced, action-filled comedy also encourages the viewers to reflect on social issues. “You’re laughing, you’re laughing and then you’re starting to go ‘Oh this isn’t something I should be laughing at.’ You’re disarming people through humour and through this intense action and physicality and then we gut punch them with what is really happening,” says Gavin Webber, co-artistic director of The Farm.
The play takes the audience through the process of filming an Australian New Wave action film, or Ozploitation film- think Mad Max or Wake in Fright. The Ozploitation films shot in the ‘70s and ‘80s were violent, raw, unpredictable and full of stunts, Webber says it was a time when filmmakers had newfound freedom after censorship was reviewed. “Before that, it had always been very uptight British cinema that had a lot of restrictions about what it could show- no sex, no gore and then suddenly it all got released and all this money came into Australian cinema,” he says. “Cinema in Australia just suddenly exploded but it was all these B-grade, horror and car stunt films that started blossoming in that period.” Webber says it wasn’t just an important time for Australian cinema, it was also an important time for Australian politics, there was change in the air. “Gough [Whitlam] was about to be fired, so

this period of politics in Australia we’re also fascinated with because it felt like change was happening. Crowds were treated to a stellar line-up of country musicians starting with local talent Dana Hassal who is said to have delivered a country-themed power show. Proving the talent that comes from the Canberra region was CMAA Golden Guitar Female Artist of the Year nominee Hayley Jensen who was a hit with all ages in her 90-minute set. Headliner and nine-time Golden Guitar Award winner Travis Collins ensured that the crowd stayed up and dancing with his high-octane journey through his much-loved hits. Now showing May December (MA15+) In Savannah, Georgia, 2015, Gracie Atherton-Yoo (Julianne Moore), her much younger husband Joe Yoo (Charles Melton) and children host a relaxed BBQ for Gracie’s friends and baking customers. Soon, actress Elizabeth Berry (Natalie Portman) arrives to start researching Gracie who, in 1992 at the age of 36, started a relationship with Joe when he was 13 years old. Shot softly with a grain, the content is anything but. Gracie is depicted as a complex but strong character who lives her life without regrets with no reminiscing of her scandalous past. Viewing her transgression as a misadventure on the way to true love, it seems that Gracie’s picture-perfect family and lifestyle are the said proof in the pudding. Enter empath Elizabeth who doggedly investigates Gracie holistically, concentrating on her life, her past, and social environment. By
digging deeper into Gracie’s family and friends, a potentially narcissistic character starts to form, as does a story that may resemble an uncomfortable, and not-discussed, truth. Unlike the thrillersque Una (2016), the movie’s tone is that of a dark comedy, using camp to balance the story’s more uncomfortable aspects. As in Perfect Blue (1997) and Black Swan (2010), Portman’s blank slate unnervingly starts to take colour when taking on Gracie’s mannerisms and looks in her all-consuming search of the truth. Meanwhile, Gracie starts to break down behind the scenes. Verdict: A great character study with a quiet but strong performance by Melton and another Oscar contender in Portman. - Luke McWilliams themovieclub.net Viewed at Dendy Cinemas

the look Finding the right sports bra WITH KAREN AND GILLIAN FROM COLLEEN’S LINGERIE AND SWIMWEAR
As we enter month two of this new year, perhaps you’ve made a resolution or set an intention to move your body more. Like any new habit, getting started is the hardest part. With exercise, whether you’re new to movement, or a seasoned athlete, the right outfit, from your head to your toes, is going to make the experience easier, more comfortable and perhaps, give you the boost you need to keep going. This is where a good sports bra can either make or break your workout. You wouldn’t run a marathon in thongs or take a high-impact cardio class in stilettos; your breasts deserve the right amount of support just as much as your feet do (and if they don’t get it, they may end up where your feet are!) First up, let’s address what a sports bra actually is. Sports bras are designed to minimise breast
bounce - movement that not only hurts but can limit mobility and stretch ligaments no matter your cup size. The level of support needed will depend on your activity. Will you be running? High-impact cardio? Pilates? Yoga? Walking? The level of impact will determine the amount of support and the style of sports bra you need. If ever there was a bra to get fitted, it’s your sports bra! The actual fitting process is identical to any other bra fitting, we help you find the sports bra that you feel supported, comfortable and ready to move in. There are 3 main types of sports bras: 1. Those that encapsulate each breast separately - most often underwired and suitable for high-impact activity. 2. The crop top/compression style - mostly non-wired, that acts almost as a bandage around the breasts, compressing them closer to your chest wall to minimise movement. 3. A hybrid combination of both.
No matter which style you need, a sports bra with a wide underbust band, thick straps and cups that fully cover the breasts will offer the most support. At Colleen’s Lingerie & Swimwear we have sports bras from brands Elomi, Freya, Wacoal, Amoena and Anita, ranging from A to K cups, for all levels of impact and, of course, sports bras suitable for those who wear a breast prosthesis. Book your fitting today and let us help support you in your movement and wellbeing goals!
We’re committed to finding the right fit for every woman. Stocking sports bras for all levels of impact

Bentleys offers private salon for women
C
Muslဣ
anberra’s only private hair salon dedicated to Muslim women is now available at Bentleys Hair of Canberra in Jamison. This discreet, upstairs salon will have a dedicated Iranian hairdresser, Arezoo, who boasts 20 years’ experience in hairdressing. Owner June Irving has embraced Canberra’s rich multicultural community and created a comfortable, modern salon to cater exclusively to Islamic women, offering complete privacy, no male staff/clients, and a nurturing atmosphere of sisterhood. “I came up with the idea because we do have clients who wear a hijab, wanting to have their hair done but we had nowhere private,” June says. “We’ve now got a little salon upstairs with four workstations and it offers absolute
total privacy.” Senior stylist Arezoo is Muslim and speaks Persian (Farsi), Kurdish and a little Arabic, so she can offer Muslim women conversation and cultural understanding. Arezoo has extensive hairdressing experience and her specialty is colouring. The warm, welcoming salon boasts comfortable chairs, a lounge to relax on accompanied by tea, coffee and chocolates. Women are encouraged to bring their friends and come as a group, and are welcome to bring their children with them. June identified the strong demand for a private salon after hearing feedback from her clients. Some Muslim women had to travel to Sydney for such a service. Recently, June hosted
a husband and wife couple for a shared hair appointment and the feedback was overwhelming. “The husband was over the moon, extremely happy,” June says. “They’d been to home hairdressers previously but couldn’t be assured of complete privacy.” Bentleys Hair of Canberra offers Muslim women the full hair-care service including Weller treatments, colours, foils, perms, cuts and styles to suit everyone’s needs. More than 14,600 people in the ACT identified their religion as Islam, according to the 2021 Census. With a lack of private hair salons in Canberra dedicated to Muslim women, June hopes she can offer the considerate hair experience they need. “The feedback is that it’s wonderful,” June says. “There’s complete discretion and Arezoo is very caring.” Bentleys Hair of Canberra is located at 3/9 Jamison Centre, Macquarie. Open Monday to Saturday and late nights (7.30pm) Wednesday to Friday. For appointments please call 6251 2681

Clean beauty, clean products 2024 is all about clean and sustainable beauty as many brands try to source natural and eco-friendly ingredients. Here are a few of our favourite clean products, all are cruelty-free while most are vegan. WITH FASHION & BEAUTY EDITOR, JESSICA CORDWELL
Probiotic Moisturiser +, $52, lustminerals.com.au
Hydrating Rose Gel Mask, $59.98, houseofimmortelle.com.au
Sweet Orange Balancing Cleanser, $35, lamav.com
Enviro Viel, $84, synergiekin.com
This one is perfect for those prone to breakouts as Lust Mineral’s vegan and cruelty-free probiotic formula mixed with pineapple and white willow bark extracts even skin tones. A non-greasy lightweight lotion, highly recommended.
This cooling mask is vegan and bursting with natural goodness with ingredients like aloe vera gel, cucumber, bearberry, bilberry, licorice root extracts and damask rose hydrosol. The calming rose scent helps you relax while the mask gets to work hydrating your skin.
Another one for those that are breakoutprone. This vegan formula is full of natural goodness like papaya, desert lime, mountain pepper and lactic and fruit acids. Light and refreshing it gets to work on hormonal acne and eliminating dirt buildup from the day.
This is like stumbling across the holy grail- a foundation that is vegan, crueltyfree, scent-free, sun smart and has good coverage. Formulated with hydrolysed tomato skin and prostrate knotweed which help to protect skin from external factors like UV radiation.
Vibrant Skin Face Oil, $99, recreationbeauty.com
Grampians Grown Luxe Lather Lotion Duet, $69, grampiansgoodco.com.au
A nongreasy oil can be hard to find but this vegan and cruelty-free formula leaves skin glowing without that sleek feeling. Sea greens, bakuchiol, antioxidants, fatty acids and naturally scented with jasmine, mandarin and rose leave your skin feeling plump and smelling great.
Handcrafted in small batches in the Northern Grampians region, this duo is luxury bottled up. Created using locally sourced organic extra virgin olive oil and ethically sourced hemp seed oil, the wash and lotion leaves you clean, smooth and delightfully scented by geranium and grapefruit.

WITH ASSISTANT PROFESSOR DR VIVIENNE LEWIS, CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGIST AT UNIVERSITY OF CANBERRA
Psychologically healthy friendships Friendships at any age are important for our mental health. When healthy, they can provide a sense of belonging, security, happiness, fun and adventure, add value to our life and make us feel good about ourselves. Healthy friends also encourage us to live well and want good things for us. They are there for both the good and the bad. When we have an unhealthy friendship with someone they can be extremely damaging to our mental and physical health. Think about that friend that always lets you down, is never there for you, only ever talks about themselves, makes you do things you don’t want to do or gets you into trouble at school or with your family. You might have a toxic friend that you know isn’t good for you, but you stay with them out of ‘loyalty’ or because you’ve known them for a long time or you feel guilty about letting them go. Unhealthy friends don’t make you feel good about yourself- you often feel lonely in the friendship, judged or like you can’t trust them or go to them when you need them. So how do you break up with a friend that isn’t
32
15 February 2024
good for you? You have to look after yourself and your interests and be ok with letting someone go. Distancing yourself from the friend or being brave and having a conversation with them about your thoughts and feelings might be needed. Getting support from others if you’re finding it hard to detach. Empathise with their feelings but be firm about your decision. Alternatively, how do you deal with being ditched as a friend by someone else? This can be especially painful when someone you’ve been friends with for a long time or you thought your friendship was solid stops contacting you or including you in their life. It’s ok to be hurt and sad, we have to grieve the loss of our friend, just like the loss of anything else. Seek out support from others and assess why the friendship ended. Was it because you’ve both grown apart or you don’t have anything in common with each other anymore perhaps? Talk to someone about how you’re feeling and plan to do something that helps you feel valued and loved such as being around family,
pets or your community. We often think it’s our fault and it might not be. Without friends we feel lonely, so work out how to make new friends and connections. Give it time, as it takes time to build up new friendships. It also requires effort so be willing to try new things and open yourself up to new people. You could meet new people through a hobby, joining an interest group, volunteering, reaching out to neighbours or starting a conversation with someone you see regularly but have never spoken to. Friendships require nurturing from both parties and are worth investing in.

Suffering from chronic pain? Consider something new. WITH WESLEY SMITH DIRECTOR, LIVE WELL HOLISTIC WELLNESS CENTRE, MANUKA LIVEWELLNATURALLY.COM.AU
If you’re suffering from chronic pain, you already know how much it impacts your life. Everything you do is measured against the effect it will have on your pain levels. You might have to give up activities you love, working can be difficult and anything that requires concentration is a struggle. Here are a few suggestions to consider:
Make sure you’re being heard Sadly, many people with chronic pain are disbelieved or dismissed by healthcare professionals, employers, friends and even family members. So, the first non-negotiable is that any health professionals you work with must take your experience seriously. If they don’t then find someone who does.
Get value for money As well as sucking the joy out of life, you can also burn through a lot of money seeking a cure. Ideally, you want to see sustainable improvements after each treatment and over the course of a few treatments see significant change. Otherwise, it’s fair to ask if the treatment is really working and if you’re not satisfied then seek an alternative.
Look outside the box Beyond medication, surgery and standard rehab, you’ll find a wide range of credible allied health options including:
from just their first session. The reason acupuncture is so effective in treating pain is that it’s able to do three things exceptionally well: reduce inflammation, release muscular tension and relax your nervous system.
Osteopathy Pain doesn’t just appear out of thin air. Sometimes the pain can be traced to an injury such as a car accident or a fall. However, when an injury has exposed an area of chronic tension or postural imbalance, you can get stuck. Osteopathy restores movement, corrects postural imbalances and treats the underlying structural causes of why you’re in pain. It also works on the nervous system to help restore better function.

CPAP life across Australia CPAP Direct, born from a Queensland family’s recognition of the crucial need for quality care, has flourished into a nationwide company with 100+ dedicated employees. With an unwavering commitment to creating a
positive patient experience, we aim to transform lives through compassion, excellence, and exceptional care. Our mission is to breathe life into every moment, fostering wellbeing for patients and partners.
Trauma Therapy Chronic pain may or may not have its origin in trauma, but if you have a history of trauma then it’s very likely that it is a contributing factor to why the body has not yet healed. Approaches to trauma therapy are diverse, however, the common theme of many methods is to support the body and mind to move from a state of ‘holding and bracing’ to one of ‘integration’. This is by no means an exhaustive list, many other approaches have either good or emerging evidence of efficacy including mediation, art therapy, tai chi, qi gong and many more. The key message is that if you’re suffering from chronic pain, it’s not your fault and there are ways to help your body heal.
Editor’s note: This wellbeing Acupuncture Most people associate acupuncture with pain relief and for good reason. Clients typically walk out feeling significant relief canberradaily.com.au

Privacy, views & comfort Macarthur 2 Marston Place Have you been looking for a spacious, contemporary, family-friendly home that’s move-in ready? Then your search might end right here at 2 Marston Place. Along with its enviable, elevated location, agent Alisa Lawrence says this four-bedroom, two-bathroom home is ideal for a growing family. “It offers a floor plan with loads of space and segregation and also offers privacy, and comfort – a blueprint that responds perfectly to the daily rhythms of family life,” she says. “In addition, the home is a ‘walk in, nothing to do’ purchase; the home has been tastefully updated and renovated. This will certainly pique strong interest from families looking to buy, taking into consideration the exorbitant costs for labour and material in renovation work.” For Ms Lawrence, her favourite things about this canberradaily.com.au
property are the beautiful outdoor entertaining deck area and inground pool, especially at this time of the year with the warmer weather upon us. “The views from the deck are unbelievable and the kitchen is very close by,” she says. “Internally, the winners are the oversized master bedroom and separate lounge and family rooms – great spaces for the kids in one room and the adults in the other.” And when it comes to location, the agent says the elevated position “with those great views and the premier North Tuggeranong locale” are the major drawcards. “Also very appealing is the proximity to Chisholm Shopping Centre and Tuggeranong Town Centre, local schools including Holy Family at Gowrie, the Woden Valley, and the quick and easy access onto the Monaro Highway.”
