Local father and son ride for a cure

In the spirit of doing what you can to help, Andrew and Caleb Gersbach are about to embark on the Tour de Cure, a mammoth 14,000km bike ride. Kicking off on Thursday 14 March, the father-andson duo will ride the Signature Tour from Hobart to Adelaide, aiming to raise funds for cancer research, support and education.

To enter the Signature Tour, all participants are required to raise a minimum of $12,000, including the $1,000 sign-up fee which year 12 student Caleb paid from earnings from his casual job. Riding with a group of like-minded individuals towards the common goal of achieving a cure for cancer is something the Gersbachs are passionate about.

“I just want to see a difference made and I want to be part of that group that does something about it,” says Andrew.

Between September and the start date, all participants undertake a 6,000km training program in preparation. The big day starts with staggered rollouts accompanied by the uplifting cheer of the

crowds and Channel 7’s Sunrise, who also create a documentary every year.

Travelling different routes each Signature Ride, the tour visits schools and businesses to educate people about their cause.

“[Riders] create a good environment for children to understand that one in three cancers is preventable. We talk to the kids about being fit, healthy and happy, and demystify the awfulness of cancer,” says Andrew.

Riding between 120 and nearly 200km each day, they visit an eatery in the town they are staying in for the evening and present a local cancer support group with $10,000.

“That money goes directly to a regional cause, making a difference to that town or that region. That is a hell of a lift for us; we might have just ridden 200km, sitting in the sun or bitter cold for eight or nine hours, but knowing that money goes to something so important really lifts our spirits,” says Andrew.

The Tour de Cure, launched in 2007 by three

friends motivated to make a difference after learning that one in two people will be affected by cancer by the age of 85, aims to help find a cure for cancer. The $118 million raised by Tour de Cure participants over the years has helped with the delivery of 979 cancer projects and contributed to 144 cancer research breakthroughs.

Ranked as a Tier 1 Charity with the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission, Tour de Cure is transparent about where their money goes with 70.3 cents of every dollar going to cancer projects.

During his schooling, Andrew’s mother Robyn had cancer. His mother being misdiagnosed a couple of times is part of the reason early detection diagnosis is so important to him. Robyn passed away in 1995 aged just 44 due to complications from secondary bowel cancer. Andrew and his wife Lisa married a year earlier and were able to share their big day with his mother.

“She was the life of the party, she was funny, crazy, she was all the things I think Caleb would have really enjoyed. It was something [meeting Caleb] I was disappointed she didn’t get to experience, and he didn’t either,” Andrew says.

In 2016, Andrew’s brother had to have a large portion of his face removed due to melanoma. As he is blind, he hadn’t noticed what was happening. Andrew wants to help put an end to cancer prematurely impacting families. This sentiment is echoed by Caleb, who has also been inspired by his father’s passion for the cause over the past ten years.

“If you can do something, you should, and no better time than to start early. My grandmother and I know a fair few people who have had it [cancer], actually classmates who have as well,” says Caleb.

Taking off on his first Tour de Cure in 2014, Andrew has returned every year except one. That year, he had to sit out due to a broken shoulder and suffered major FOMO (Fear of Missing Out). Thanks to the support of friends, family, and his employer CISCO, Andrew has surpassed the impressive milestone of raising $200,000.

At 17 years old, Caleb will be the youngest person to take part in Tour de Cure as usually riders are required to be at least 18.

The race takes place a month shy of Caleb’s 18th birthday but because of being Andrew’s son and his maturity as assessed by various members, he was allowed to enter early.

“That was simply listening to other people’s stories while riding and seeing how I would respond to it,” Caleb says.

Thank you for your service

On 16 February 1984, two young blokes joined the Australian Federal Police: 18-year-old Peter Mellor and 20-year-old Michael Chew. On 27 February 1984, “a skinny little Greek kid who grew up in the back of a suburban Perth fish shop” (his words) by the name of Mick Calatzis also joined up.

Over the next 40 years, all three had stellar and respected careers in the AFP in Canberra. I remember them all as young constables appearing on many occasions as witnesses in cases I ran for the prosecution in the mid-to-late 80s. I recall them as excellent witnesses and as young officers with a passion for doing their job well and protecting our community.

Peter Mellor, as the youngest, still has a few years of service left in him. He is currently the long-serving and much respected Watch House Sergeant in the decrepit City police station.

Michael Chew has had a distinguished career in the ACT, interstate, and overseas, and is a highly competent and honourable senior officer who has contributed much to the AFP, Canberra, and indeed Australia in his 40 years in the force. Similarly, and in the same vein, Detective Superintendent Mick Calatzis, a still very younglooking and fit 60-year-old.

Both Michael and Mick started their careers as young coppers attached to Belconnen station, which was where I first came across them.

These three blokes have seen it all, and had the ACT community’s back for 40 years. I hope the AFP uses this opportunity to celebrate their service, and marks it appropriately with some special event, and invites the local media to talk to these three soon-to-be-retired champions.

Policing is probably the most difficult job a person can do in the ACT. Police run a real risk of harm from vicious criminals, and work long hours in often very difficult circumstances.

The ACT is currently about 250 police understrength. We have about the same number

of sworn officers as we had in 2000 when I was police minister, and the population has almost doubled since then. The City police station is a disgrace, and the toilets don’t work properly. Police are unable to attend all the incidents they need and want to, as there are simply not enough of them.

The first duty of any government is the security of its people. At a national level, that means a strong and adequately funded defence force. At a state/territory level, it means a strong, adequately funded police force with the necessary legislative powers to do its job properly. Trendy, ill-thought-out, decadent, lax drug laws that encourage young people to take illicit drugs, and crazy laws to raise the age of criminal responsibility to 14 (there are quite a few 13-year-old murderers in Australia) undermine police and hurt society for no corresponding good. Hopefully, a new government after the October elections will show a much greater appreciation of our police force than this current lot.

F lov g The journey to your skin starts at The R Clinic

or many of us, the journey to loving our skin can be bumpy, especially when you don’t know how to take the first steps. Removing all the guesswork is the expert team at The R Clinic.

The skin is more than just a protective layer for our bodies; how our skin looks and feels can directly tie into our self-worth and mental health. Medical director of The R Clinic and cosmetic physician, Dr Wen Sung, is passionate about helping people love the skin they are in.

“People tend to get their self-confidence from skin because their skin is just like an outfit. We go to work and people wear nice suits but very rarely do people also think their skin is part of that outfit. Having a nice outfit and having nice skin can give people a confidence boost; when they look in the mirror, they can see they’re healthy,” he says.

Conveniently nestled in the bustling hub of Grazier Lane, Belconnen and run on an ethos of trust, the dedicated team establishes honest and long-lasting relationships with their patients.

“A lot of times, patients have skin concerns and they go to di erent clinics thinking they just want to get one thing fixed and that’s it. We’re unique in the way that not only do we have the variety of treatments we can o er the patient, but that we actually want to integrate that to create a holistic treatment plan,” says Dr Wen.

“We always provide patients with what we think is the best that their skin needs, what they will benefit from the most. We will be very transparent with pricing and we would never recommend anything the patient doesn’t need.”

Working hand in hand with you, The R Clinic o ers its clients a dedicated end-to-end service, a relaxed and unpressured experience that is sure to achieve the results you desire.

“We try to utilise the whole clinics resources - our client liaison o cer, nurses, dermal therapists and doctors. We try to work as a team to create that holistic patient experience where they feel like they are going through a treatment journey rather than just single treatments,” says Dr Wen.

Taking the first step

Everyone’s skin is unique and tells its own story. The R Clinic wants to help you write it the way you want. Together on this skin journey, you’ll look back on past chapters, the needs of your skin and what a happy ending looks like for you. From there, the expert team collaborates to create the right path.

The journey to your best skin is not a race; sometimes the best results are the gradual transformations from using methods and treatments catered to your needs.

“Significant changes come from gradual e orts with time, hence why sometimes we combine di erent technology. Not only do we use technology, but we also use a lot of advanced diagnostic tools and clinical expertise with the products. Whether it’s topical, oral therapies, energy-based device treatments or even small procedure-based treatments, we try to combine everything together.”

Like any journey, roadblocks or new concerns can appear and the team is ready to steer the patient in any direction they need to go.

“We start from a single point and as we progress, we see how the patient feels in how we’re helping them achieve their goal, and ultimately, we can try to adjust the pathway. That’s why we call it a journey; we want to know where they want to get started and where they want to end and in between is working in collaboration with patients.

Dr Wen Shan-Sung is passionate about helping people love the skin they are in.

Achieving the best outcomes

Personalised care is the key to achieving your goal and that is exactly what you get at The R Clinic. Through comprehensive assessments and meticulous planning, the skin experts develop long-term treatment plans tailored to your skin’s requirements.

The first step on the skin journey is undergoing a skin assessment and audit with Dr Wen. During this you will receive a detailed skin and facial analysis, using the latest in diagnostic technology you will be able to identify skin needs instantly.

From the assessments and discussion about desired results, Dr Wen can determine which of their bespoke programs might suit your skin concerns. These programs have been designed to cater to common skin concerns like redness, volume loss, acne and scarring.

“We can still further tailor to the individual patients skin, it’s almost like a template for the skin for certain conditions. If they require minor modification, we can tailor specific changes to tailor to the skin needs,” Dr Wen says.

The personalised treatment continues once you leave the clinic. O ering a product called Universkin, Dr Wen can create skincare to target your specific needs right there in the rooms. Created by a dermatologist in France, the customisable skincare solutions can be changed as needed, for example, during a change of season.

“We usually choose two or three of the best

ingredients that their skin needs and mix it straightaway in the clinic. It is going to be freshly made in the clinic, highly customised to the skincare conditions and we bring the patient back in two months to see how they respond.”

It’s all about you

From the moment you walk in the door, your comfort and confidence in the clinic are the team’s top priority. The welcoming environment and team ensure that you feel heard, valued, understood and supported throughout the whole skin journey.

“Because of my background in the medical field, I realised to address patient’s main concerns is one of our core values; that and to deliver the results and give the patients the best outcome,” says Dr Wen.

“Not only do we do the skin treatments, sometimes we do pick up other skin conditions we can address… When a client comes here it is going to be a multidisciplinary team working to provide service to the patient.”

Leave it to the professionals

Heading to The R Clinic, you can be assured you are in the expert hands of doctors with extensive expertise in medical aesthetics. Dr Wen says people go to a dermatologist for diagnosis of skin disease or conditions but rarely find adequate procedures, or people go to aesthetic clinics for injectables but find they lack the technology for other skin concerns.

“What we’ve done is get our clinic to be more of a holistic care provider, we do have the ability to do minor skin procedures, diagnose and prescribe medical therapy with the use of advanced technology” says Dr Wen.

Minor cosmetic procedures include thread lifts, thread neck lifts and skin tightening as they can

provide proper numbing solutions. From preventive treatment to proactive solutions, the doctors, dermal therapists and nurses work with the patients to identify what path fits them best.

“Preventative treatment can be done usually using a more conservative approach, or if people are thinking about faster results, we sometimes require something more advanced, such as laser resurfacing.”

The latest technology

Incorporating the latest advancements in medical technology, The R Clinic can o er state-of-the-art treatments and procedures that will maximise your results. Safety, e cacy and innovation lead the way with skincare solutions and non-invasive enhancements at the clinic.

An exciting new tool at the clinic is the Alma Hybrid, a skin rejuvenation machine that combines both ablative and non-ablative laser technology in one tool. The highly customisable options mean that it can be powered to suit di erent skin types and improve treatment outcomes.

“If the patient wants something gentle but wants to see results, I use a higher proportion of the non-ablative with a small portion of ablative. An ablative laser can create visible changes whereas a non-ablative can create potential improvement of skin texture. If the patient wants something more powerful I can adjust the settings,” says Dr Wen.

Combine the range of cutting-edge technology, medical-grade skincare and practitioners who sincerely care about your outcomes and you’re on the way to loving the skin you are in.

Your journey starts at The R Clinic. Call 5119 3898 or email contact@rclinic.com.au to book an appointment.

Canberra Men’s Kitchen to prove old dogs can learn new tricks

QUEANBEYAN GP SUPERCLINIC 02 6297 3311 or www.qgpsc.com.au/appointments/ @lbsc_clinic

Contrary to the classic saying, the Men’s Kitchen has proven that old dogs can be taught new tricks - cooking and kitchen tricks to be precise. Launching in Sydney in 2016, the initiative has been a resounding success and is now making the move to Canberra.

The not-for-profit will be setting up at the Woden Valley Uniting Church on 27 March to demonstrate what a coaching session would look like. Lessons will start shortly after.

The program aims to teach men aged 60 and over how to cook, while also providing the mental health benefits of social interaction. Organisers say there are over 30,000 men in Canberra in this age group, many of whom have no kitchen experience.

“Learning how to cook is great, it’s really enjoyable and you can leave with some really great cooking skills. But I think the most important part of it is the mental health benefits of getting together. Especially for people in that age group, getting together and becoming friends is important,” says Sam Silver, volunteer lead in Canberra.

Peter Watson, founder and president of Men’s Kitchen, knows that for some, retirement can be a time when they lose a sense of purpose or miss

interactions with colleagues. Believing that good nutrition and social connections are two key factors in longevity and good health, he combined the two.

“He got to a stage in his life where he realised he needed to learn how to cook as he got older and he didn’t have the skills, and he was losing the social connection that he was used to,” says Ms Silver. “So, he established a kitchen to provide a safe space for men to come together and learn how to cook and develop some camaraderie.”

For just a $20 sign-up fee, participants receive an apron, cookbook and access to the cooking classes. Incorporating learning and enthusiasm for good food in a relaxed setting, up to ten participants are guided by volunteer instructors to prepare a dish together before sitting down to eat.

“They start out with fairly simple meals,” says Ms Silver. “They then get quite creative, especially in their desserts.”

Eggsclusive behind-the-scenes look at Canberra’s AFP Museum

hich came first, the chicken or the egg? Well it’s the egg because when it comes to the AFP, the yolk started it all.

This little-known gem is one of 20,000 stories locked in a vast, high-security warehouse in Hume - a museum that’s been closed to the public for more than 20 years.

CW toured the AFP Museum on – coincidentally – the anniversary of the 1978 Hilton bombing, which was the impetus to create today’s Australian Federal Police.

The museum’s oldest exhibit is a hand-written document from 1917, penned by PM Billy Hughes, calling for a Commonwealth Police Force. He’d just been egged.

“Billy Hughes was trying to get conscription over the line so he was doing a tour of the country trying to promote the idea,” explains AFP Museum team leader, Aiden Silvestro. “He’s at a train station in Warwick, Queensland, where a protestor gets him right in the head with an egg. He commands a nearby Queensland police officer to arrest the man but the officer states to him, I work for Queensland police, I don’t answer to you. You don’t have

jurisdiction.”

So Hughes got cracking (pun intended) and immediately wrote a telegram on the train back to Sydney, calling for a Commonwealth Police Force. Legislation was in place within a fotnight and 20 Commonwealth Police officers were sworn in two weeks later.

The story gets better - there’s a current AFP staff member in Canberra, who’s a distant cousin of both the egger and the Queensland Police Officer. Dominic Andersen-Strudwick is proud of his lineage.

“Funnily enough, the egg-thrower’s cousin was the Queensland Police Officer who refused to arrest him - part of it being they were cousins,” Dominic says. “I’m proud of [the connection], it really does feel like I’m at home in a way, working here, a nice full circle.”

Back to the museum. Any CSI fan worth their salt will love this collection. There’s 1980s fingerprint technology (AFP had the world’s first national fingerprint database) and a prototype blue-light gadget for detecting blood spatter and body fluids (a world-first invention for the AFP).

It’s a shame the museum closed its doors to the public in 2002, a consequence of the Bali bombings

and resulting increased security. The only regular visitors today are new AFP recruits, however the museum is keen to raise its public profile. It’s open for private tours by appointment.

Spy fans will love the museum’s newest exhibit, an encrypted mobile phone that led to the AFP seizing 3.7 tonnes of drugs, 104 weapons, $44m in cash, and assets worth millions.

“These phones were sold on the black market and promoted to criminal organisations as an encrypted communication option if people didn’t want their texts known,” Aiden explains. “What they didn’t realise was that it was a massive, covert honeypot operation. The AFP built a capability that allowed law enforcement to access, decrypt and read communications. For almost three years, the AFP and the FBI monitored criminals’ encrypted communications.”

What they found were plots to kill, mass drug trafficking and gun distribution. The workings of the phone are still classified.

In the museum’s wardrobe aisle are old AFP uniforms - the most dated version being the first female police uniform complete with handbag to carry the pistol, high-heels and a skirt.

“With the handbag that carried the pistol, often women would actually say that it was easier to hit someone over the head with a handbag than it was to get the gun out of the bag,” says Marina Simoncini, AFP communications and customs manager.

There’s also a 1974 Ford Falcon XB Special Pursuit 500 Sedan. Its V8 engine, suspension and gearbox were modified by Ford Australia for better performance in pursuits, nicknamed a ‘wolf in sheep’s clothing’ because of its relatively unassuming street presence. Plus there’s a surveillance van, used by Commonweatlh Police in the mid-70s.

“Near the end of its service it was monitoring a wedding in December many years ago,” Aiden says. “The operator in the vehicle called out and said it’s too hot in here, it’s 40 degrees, I need someone to take over. Then the radio went quiet. He’d collapsed, so they sent two people out to crack a window and get him out - meanwhile there was a wedding happening right next to where they went and smashed the window of the van, only to work out very quickly it was the wrong van.”

Some stories are tragic - twisted steel from the Canberra Hospital implosion, and a melted bundy clock from the Bali bombing. Some stories are miraculous - the uniform of a rescuer at the Thredbo landslide, and diving masks from the Thai cave rescue. Oh and nine worn-out Kenny Koala puppets.

The AFP Museum should be on everyone’s to-do list. Private visits are available 9am-4pm, Wednesday to Friday.

SOLUTIONS

PISCES FEB 20 – MAR 20

Be prepared to make a commitment in your personal life if you were born in February, and at work or health-wise if you were born in March. Seek expert advice; it will be far better to gain the facts than to jump to conclusions.

ARIES MAR 21 – APR 20

You’ll enjoy being more active socially. A get-together or agreement you make this week could be positive in outcome, and will give you the reassurance you need. Just be careful to avoid rash decisions towards Sunday and Monday.

TAURUS APR 21 – MAY 21

A lovely development could support the belief that you are prospering, and will lead to higher self-esteem. You’ll enjoy socialising this weekend, and a trip or a get-together will be uplifting. But you must avoid impulsiveness with finances and work options.

GEMINI MAY 22 – JUN 21

A trip, study, adventure or legal arrangement could be fruitful. But if you feel life’s rules and regulations are limiting, be sure to take steps towards your own goals, slowly but surely. Avoid being swept up in someone else’s drama.

CANCER JUN 22 – JUL 22

This is an excellent time for negotiations and for making new agreements with the people you love, such as upbeat arrangements that serve a long-term purpose. Take the initiative with talks but avoid irrational people who could wrongfoot you.

LEO JUL 23 – AUG 23

You’ll enjoy your favourite pasttimes. Someone may prove helpful with your projects, travel or group efforts. Romance could blossom, so be sure to take the initiative. Take unexpected developments in your stride.

VIRGO AUG 24 – SEPT 23

You can truly boost both your work and personal life now by making careful commitments to key people. Just avoid raking up old issues with someone who can be feisty, as these are likely to escalate. Be flexible with arrangements – within reason.

LIBRA SEPT 24 – OCT 23

This is a good week to organise a work or health schedule that suits you. A work or personal partner has news for you. A family or a creative development may be unexpected, so be sure to take things in your stride.

SCORPIO OCT 24 – NOV 22

This is a good week to make decisions or a commitment in your personal life, ensuring you keep everyone concerned in the loop and that you manage changes carefully. If some aspects of your arrangements seem limiting, look for the positives.

SAGITTARIUS NOV 23 – DEC 21

Developments at home, with family or a property could lead you to feeling more secure about your plans. This is a good week to make progress at work, but you must avoid being too easily influenced or railroaded by an unpredictable character.

CAPRICORN DEC 22 – JAN 20

Consider carefully your existing agreements at work and financially, and also in your personal life. When you do, you’ll avoid the temptation to gamble, both emotionally and financially, on an opportunity that may not be all that it seems.

AQUARIUS JAN 21 – FEB 19

Mars and Venus in Aquarius provide the drive to improve your personal life, and you’ll gain the chance to make a financial or personal commitment too. You may improve your home life as a result. But you must avoid rash decisions.

Capital Region Farmers Market 20 years, providing nearly $4m in community support celebrates

Capital Region Farmers Market celebrates 20 years in 2024. That’s 20 years supporting worthy community projects via the Market Founders, Rotary Club of Hall.

“What some people don’t realise is that every time they shop at Market, they’re contributing to some very worthy causes. Over the past 20 years, Market stallholder fees have been donated to local, regional, national and international projects determined by Rotary. Since 2004, close to $4 million in funding has been provided,” said Capital Region Farmers Market Manager, Sarah Power.

“When Canberrans shop with us, they are not only supporting local farmers and their families, they’re making a very real di erence to the lives of many people both here and overseas. We’ve provided support

for global organisations, health foundations and much-needed medical aid, to the local fire brigade, grants for local schools and individual refugees.

“Rotary Club of Hall is consistently working towards providing support to as many people as possible,” Sarah continued.

One of the best stories of support includes The GO Foundation. Rotary’s desire to balance the scales for Indigenous children in the capital region through cultural and educational support led to a collaboration with footballers Adam Goodes and Michael O’Laughlin in establishing a Canberra version of their scholarship program. $300,000 has been committed to date.

In 2017, a $50,000 donation helped the Cure Brain Cancer Foundation bring the international

BIOMEDE clinical trial to Australia, giving hope to children living with a lethal type of brain tumour. And still in the field of medicine, ROMAC (Rotary Overseas Medical Aid for Children) provides life-changing or life-saving and complex operations for children. Rotary Club of Hall has been providing the partial or whole ACT medical access expenses of one child a year (up to $6,000) for over a decade.

“We just can’t celebrate our 20th year without reflecting on the many people we’ve got to meet and help in some way – whether that’s big or small. And we look forward to providing more support in future,” Sarah concluded.

Capital Region Farmers Market is open on Saturdays throughout the year, 7am-11.30am at Exhibition Park in Canberra. The Market’s 20th Birthday celebrations will take place on

Female comedy pair take on Canberra Comedy Festival

From the start to the end, life has its frustrating, funny and frustratingly funny moments. Sharing just a few of their moments are local comedians Caitlin Maggs and Sarah Stewart in Before and After at The Street Theatre on Saturday 14 March.

Performing as part of this year’s Canberra Comedy Festival (CCF), the duo met on the Canberra comedy scene and instantly connected. Despite their 30-year age gap, the pair get on like a house on fire and are excited to present their work together.

“She’s pretty much at the beginning of her career, whereas I’m at the end of my career and into my 60s, so I have gone through all the menopause stuff,” says Sarah.

The before is Caitlin Maggs, a young mother, electrician and business owner. Caitlin won the ACT Raw Comedy State finals in 2021 and went on to perform at the Melbourne Comedy Festival in her sixth-ever show. Employing only women at her electrical company the comedian is inspired by her day-to-day life and working in a male-

dominated field.

“A lot of my life; my job, my kids, basically a lot of myself, it’s selfish I guess... One of my favourite small gags, I like to keep people on their toes and ask, because I’m an electrician, what do you call a female electrician? And the answer is an electrician, I always like to ask a male audience,” Caitlin smiles.

The after is Sarah Stewart, who appeared at last year’s CCF with The Women’s Room. This year, Sarah says they have all gone on to bigger and hopefully better things. In the past 12 months, Sarah has performed across the country and in London and was nominated for Best in Comedy at the 2023 Sydney Fringe Festival Sarah draws on her 40 years of midwifery experience, retirement and month-long camping trips.

“I’ve come out the end of menopause and just looking forward to the last couple of decades of my life… I’m thinking about death, I’m very organised in my life, I want to be organised

in my death, so I am planning my funeral. I’ve got my will sorted but I’m just fretting a little bit whether I’m going to find a coffin to fit me,” Sarah smiles.

National Opera marks Puccini’s centenary with Suor Angelica

Canberra-born soprano and midwife Emma Mauch will perform her first lead role next week, in National Opera’s production of Puccini’s Suor Angelica, marking the centenary of the composer’s death.

Suor Angelica is a tragedy about a nun who loses her illegitimate child and is reunited with him in death, thanks to the intervention of the Madonna. Only an hour long, it is part of Il trittico, a triptych of one-act operas that premièred at the Met in 1918. Puccini considered Suor Angelica the finest of the three; the score is ravishingly beautiful, and it contains one of 20th century opera’s most famous arias.

“I have a very privileged role as a midwife,” Ms Mauch said. “I get to witness women become mothers all the time…

“In this scenario, what should have been this joyous thing of her becoming a mother is torn away from her, twisted and darkened, and becomes this awful thing that she then becomes completely tormented by for years. She never ever gets to follow through and experience that joy, and so she has to live it out in her mind.

“Certainly, my experience as a

midwife of witnessing the absolute joy of that moment has definitely influenced the way that I express the opposite of that, and her loss.”

The high emotion of the piece makes it vocally challenging, Ms Mauch says. “Even when she’s singing these beautifully lyrical phrases … it’s always with this undercurrent of absolute desperation for this woman who just desperately wants to see her baby, wants to see her child.”

Sometimes, Ms Mauch admits, becoming involved with the character and the storyline can be challenging; she has to “step back a little bit, and allow the music to tell some of the story, so that I don’t get too caught up in the emotions of it. Because I wouldn’t be able to sing otherwise”.

The most celebrated aria in the opera is the heart-rending ‘Senza mamma’, sung when Suor Angelica, who has wanted to see her child for seven years, learns that he died two years before, and she resolves on suicide.

“Her whole worldview has completely changed in that moment,” Ms Mauch said. “It’s extremely dark to begin with; she starts talking about what her child looked like in death, and having

Giacomo Puccini.

this horrific mental imagery of what that was, this child that she never got to know… She has this vision of him speaking to her from heaven, almost like a religious trance or ecstasy. She can suddenly now see the path to being reunited with her son…

“It’s quite a big [aria] to navigate, but beautifully written, and the harmonies are just gorgeous… But the undercurrent of it is so extreme and so intense. It’s really satisfying as a performer to sing because it’s got so many layers to it.”

Emma Mauch graduated from the West Australian Academy of Performing Arts, then worked as a chorister for Opera Australia, West Australian Opera, and Grange Park Opera (UK). She returned to Canberra in 2013 to train as a midwife and to be closer to her family.

In 2020, she made a commitment to herself that she

would bring more music into her life. She teaches singing at Girls’ Grammar and performed in National Opera’s gala concert in 2022. The company, founded by baritone Peter Coleman-Wright AO in 2020, aims to nurture Canberra talent.

“I’m thrilled that these opportunities exist for younger singers, the people who are just starting out, or for people like me, who disappeared from the arena for a little while to do something else, and who are working their way slowly back into having more music in their life again,” Ms Mauch said.

Suor Angelica, National Opera, Albert Hall, Thursday 7 (6pm to 7pm) and Sunday 10 March (2pm to 3pm and 6pm to 7pm). Tickets: $55 to $10. https://nationalopera.org.au/ suor/. Extended story online.

In the cellar of a run-down centuries-old pub in Berlin, the pub’s owner (Peter Mullan) attempts to burn a humanoid creature tied to a chair, wearing a hessian bag over its head. Failing miserably, the owner’s estranged daughter Iris (Freya Allan) inherits the pub and all within it. Soon Neil (Jeremy Irvine) visits, offering two thousand dollars to communicate with his dear departed wife through the mystical creature in the cellar.

Iris has grown up without a family and is broke. With her best friend Katie (Ruby Barker), Iris moves out of her accommodation and is fortuitous to have inherited the pub at this time. With Neil, her first, and only customer, confiding that money is not a problem for him to book time with the medium, why would Iris simply not sell up and move on from such a horrible threat?

Last year’s fantastic Talk to Me dealt with a similar setup: a ghastly medium is used to make contact with the dead to a strict timeline less those on the other side crossover. Whereas Talk to Me had a solid story with crystal clear in-universe rules and further reaching contemporary themes touching on addiction and youth drug culture, Baghead is a simpler, but flawed, form of entertainment.

Unlike the excellent The Skeleton Key, the machinations of the curse, here involving a lease, is clunky and loose, which ultimately leads to an underwhelming finale.

Verdict: A strong production let down by pacing issues and flawed plot.

Sanctuary, providing a haven for Canberra creatives

Nestled in the leafy suburb of Narrabundah hides a blank canvas waiting for creatives to make their own. Soaking in natural light, Sanctuary is a bright and welcoming creative studio and eventhire space.

Lined with bright windows and sheer curtains, wood floors and clean white walls, the space allows for transformation to suit whatever event is being held. From weddings to baby showers, photoshoots, regular faith community meets and the weekly yoga class, the space is for the community.

“I’d love for Sanctuary to be a hub for communities to form deeper connections with each other… I’d like it to be a third space for someone that is not home, it’s not work but a third space where someone could always feel welcome and at home doing something they enjoy,” says Lauren Harkness, founder and director of Rise Events and Sanctuary.

Already a desired location for photographers of our region with furniture and props in abundance,

Sanctuary wants to invite locals to connect and create together in their Canberra Creatives open studio.

“What I love about the idea, is it’s open to any medium, even if you’re not an artist. We’ve had solo businesswomen who felt the isolation and wanted to be part of a community,” says Joanne Grittoes, photographer and studio manager of Sanctuary.

Collaborating or just working in the space have been writers, make-up artists, photographers and graphic designers. The creatives will be able to seek advice, bounce ideas off each other, work in a space where they aren’t alone or drop in for a cuppa.

“Isolation and loneliness are quite real for anyone, and for those who work for themselves, they can go a really long time without communicating with someone. What we are hoping to achieve, opening up our studio for you to come and work in here as a coworking and a play space but it is about connecting with each other,” says Lauren.

“I’ll be painting away in my studio for weeks on end and not really having any feedback and I think that’s the same for many creatives. It’d be nice to have like-minded people to bounce ideas off and just to have those conversations around what we’re each working on would be very helpful and build that community,” says Tania Vrancic, ceramic artist and painter and artist-in-residence.

Book talk

This week, Jeff Popple reviews three exciting tales of mystery, murder and missing antiques. More of Jeff’s reviews can be found on his blog: murdermayhemandlongdogs.com

Body Of Lies

Sarah Bailey’s Body Of Lies is a must-read for anyone who enjoys well-written Australian crime novels with a good sense of place and richly described characters. It is the fourth in Sarah’s series about Detective Sergeant Gemma Woodstock and opens in an intriguing manner with a fatal car crash, the theft of a body from a morgue and a brutal murder. Gemma is on maternity leave but gets drawn into the case when the mysteries start hitting too close to home.

Tightly plotted and well-paced, Body Of Lies is a good addition to this high-quality series.

What Happened To Nina?

Dervla McTiernan’s latest novel is set in America and revolves around the disappearance of a young woman, Nina, and the media frenzy that follows. As Nina’s parents desperately try to find out what happened to her, the wealthy parents of the boy she was last seen with launch a well-organised media campaign to protect their son. Soon, the facts are lost in a swirl of accusation and counter accusation, and in the chaos, the truth about what happened to Nina gets lost.

What Happened To Nina? is a thought-provoking and gripping drama that will keep you engaged until the thudding conclusion.

The Antique Hunter’s Guide To Murder

C. L. Miller makes good use of her famed family’s connections to the world of British antiques, to produce a thoroughly enjoyable ‘whodunnit’.

Combining the fascination of the Antiques Roadshow with a treasure hunt murder mystery and a very appealing pair of investigators, The Antique Hunter’s Guide To Murder is probably the most captivating detective story I have read so far in 2024. When antiques dealer Arthur Crockleford dies in strange circumstances, Freya Lockwood is drawn back to the small English village of her youth as she tries to uncover who would want her estranged mentor dead. A delight from beginning to end.

Five laundry mistakes you might be making the look

While washing and drying your clothes may seem as simple as throwing them in and pressing a few buttons, simple mistakes can impact both the quality of your items and the wellbeing of your skin.

These five common mistakes can compromise the cleanliness, durability and comfort of garments.

1. Overloading the washing machine

Everyone has been guilty of trying to squeeze a couple more things in a load of washing, however, it can dramatically impact the clothes and the machine.

If the machine is too full, water and detergent won’t be able to reach each garment to adequately clean them, while increased friction can cause damage. If the machine is overloaded, it can’t rinse and drain properly which leaves soap residue

or stains on clothes.

Overworking your machine can reduce its life, so it is best to follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for capacity.

2. Putting everything in the dryer

The feeling of pulling your favourite sweater or shirt out of the dryer to find it has shrunk or lost shape is devastating but it is easily avoidable. It comes down to knowing your fabrics. Correctly drying your items preserves integrity and increases their longevity.

Cotton, wool and linen are prone to shrinking in the dryer due to fibres tightening in the high heat. Follow care instructions- usually on the inside label.

Cotton should be used on low or medium heat and pulled from the dryer when damp to air dry. Wool shouldn’t be placed in a dryer and should be laid flat to maintain its shape. Linen needs

to air dry to avoid excess wrinkles and shrinkage.

3. Using the wrong detergent

Different clothes require different detergents; if you have been hitting the gym or working in the garden, choose a powerful detergent to remove sweat, odour and dirt. Items like baby clothes require something gentler.

Opting for a non-toxic or natural detergent can help improve the quality of skin and clothes. Detergents can contain harsh chemicals that can lead to irritation, dryness, itching. In some cases, they may strip the skin of natural oils or disrupt pH balance, resulting in increased discomfort.

4. Not cleaning your washing machine

It is easy to forget the washing machine needs to be cleaned too

and not doing so can seriously damage your clothes. A dirty machine will accumulate grime, dirt and detergent residue which creates the perfect home for mould, mildew and bacteria. These nasties leave clothes smelling funky and stained. A dirty machine may not thoroughly clean and rinse clothes and leave soap residue and discolouration. Many machines will have a drum wash option, do this and clean filters regularly to keep your laundry fresh.

5. Forgetting wool dryer balls

Want a way to help your clothes dry faster and have fewer wrinkles? Meet the eco-friendly, sustainable and reusable wool dryer ball. Reducing the tangling of clothes, these magic balls cut down on static and electricity usage. Opt for a natural wool for sensitive skin.

health+wellbeing

How well are you really? Answer these five questions

One of the key principles of wellbeing is that health is much more than the absence of disease. Just because you’re not sick enough to need medical help doesn’t mean you are bursting with vitality or happiness. In between sickness and wellbeing is a vast middle ground that most of us inhabit.

How do you evaluate where you sit on that continuum? One tried and tested way is to take the Wellbeing Test (WHO -5), developed by the World Health Organization in 1998. It’s a quick and simple way to check your wellbeing status. To take the quiz, simply rate your response, to the following five questions:

Over the last 2 weeks

1. I have felt cheerful and in good spirits.

2. I have felt calm and relaxed.

3. I have felt active and vigorous.

4. I woke up feeling fresh and rested.

5. My daily life has been filled with things that interest me.

Score each question:

At no time (o)

Some of the time (1)

Less than half the time (2)

More than half the time (3)

Most of the time (4)

All of the time (5)

Convert your score to a percentage by multiplying your total by 4.

If you scored 25% or less

The good news is that now you know, if you didn’t already, that it’s time to seek help to turn things around and also there’s probably some ‘low-hanging fruit’ waiting to be plucked that will make a difference. If you’re not sure where to start, reach out to a trusted health professional to get the ball rolling.

If you scored between 25% and 50%

There’s room for improvement! Check your answer to question 4: I woke up feeling fresh and rested. If that was low, then I would start with working on the quality of your sleep as so many of the other aspects of wellbeing are hard to

optimise if you’re chronically exhausted.

If you scored over 50% but less than 75%

You’re doing a pretty good job but with some tweaks, you can feel better. Start on your lowest score and see how you can turn it into a higher score. For example, if you rated low on question 5, then challenge yourself to make sure you include one thing you love every day of the week.

You scored 75% or higher

Well done. You’re clearly listening to your body and consciously engaged with the process of nurturing your wellbeing. The aim is not to get to 100%, for example feeling calm and relaxed all the time is not something humanly possible or even desirable. In my opinion its healthier to be accepting of whatever emotional states are there in any one moment. However, a calm and relaxed baseline to return to ‘most of the time’ is a good thing to aim for. Editor’s note: This wellbeing column provides information that is general in nature. Please always refer to your preferred health professional for advice suited to your personal healthcare requirements.

How to get the most out of your session with a psychologist

I’ve been a Clinical Psychologist for many years now and I want to share some tips for those of you who might be new to therapy, contemplating seeing someone or have seen someone for a long time but feel you’re not making the most of your sessions.

Seeking help is about investing in yourself and your well-being and you are worth the effort.

Psychological therapy is hard work and it can often take some time to make long-standing changes. Most people will need at least 10-12 sessions to really work on changing problems that might have been there for some years. That’s because psychologists use evidence-based, science-backed strategies to help people change their behaviour, thinking and feeling (often called cognitive behavioural therapy) and it takes people a little while to learn these skills.

Prepare beforehand

Go in prepared with what you want to get out of your sessions. Take some time to prepare for the

session, thinking about how you’ve been feeling lately, what’s been worrying you and any behaviours you’re concerned about; Write some notes down to jog your memory while you’re there. I recommend to my clients that they come early to their appointment and take a little time to settle themselves.

Allow yourself to be vulnerable

For your therapist to help you they need to know what’s going on. You can trust them; they won’t judge you so be honest. It’s hard opening up sometimes and talking about your feelings but that’s what therapists are good at; listening, showing empathy, validating your feelings, and helping you come up with solutions and strategies for success.

Take notes

Bring a notepad with you to write down the strategies discussed and what you need to do between now and the next session.

Allow yourself some downtime afterwards

Therapy sessions can be very draining especially

when you are talking about not-so-nice things and hard emotions. Give yourself a bit of time afterward before going back to school or work or picking up the kids just to centre yourself before getting on with your day.

Process what was covered

Take some time after the session to think about what was discussed. What insights did you gain? What strategies do you need to practice? When, where and how will you put in place the strategies discussed?

Do your homework

The real work is what you do outside of the session. When I work with children, for example, I make sure that the parents/carers know what to do to assist their child. What they do with their child in between sessions is much more powerful than what I can do in 50 minutes.

What you are learning are life skills and ways of behaving and thinking that will help you throughout your life. The skills you learn can usually be applied to a variety of problems throughout your life. So, keep practicing!

Canberra Health Services

Take control - Live Well

Last year, Kathy says, her fibromyalgia and chronic pain had taken control:

“They determined my daily routine rather than I determined it.”

But after enrolling in a program run by Canberra Health Services (CHS), she has found a new lease on life.

Take Control – Live Well is a free, three-week group program designed to give participants the skills and confidence to take control of their chronic conditions, connect with others, and get support to make changes and live well. The first program for the first half of this year begins in early March; places are still available.

“It certainly helps, because it’s given me a more positive mental attitude towards the problem, but also given me some ideas, goals, how to plan things, so that there are periods when I actually get relief,” Kathy said. “It makes things more worthwhile.”

The program helps people with chronic conditions – including diabetes, arthritis, mental health conditions, and chronic fatigue – to navigate the health system, and empowers them to feel more in control and more of an active partner in their health care, explains Chelsea Hillenaar, CHS’ Community Care Health Promotion Officer.

“It is quite good for people who are feeling stuck or overwhelmed, and are not sure where to start,” Ms Hillenaar said. “They’ve reported that the program has been the kick-off or the motivation they need to get started on making some

changes… A lot of people know what they need to do, but actually doing it is the tricky part.”

The program is run both online and in-person:

• Belconnen Community Health Centre, beginning Monday 4 March, at 1pm

• Phillip Community Health Centre, beginning Tuesday 9 April, at 9.30am

• Online, starting Wednesday 8 May, at 4.30pm

• Gungahlin Community Health Centre, starting Friday 7 June, at 9.30am Carers are welcome to attend.

More programs will be released over the next few months until November.

Participants will have the opportunity to write their own personal plan and receive a handbook with useful resources. For three months after the program ends, they can receive regular SMS/ text message support to help them reach their goals. A reunion session will take place after three months.

Any adult who lives in the ACT and has at least one chronic condition (lasting three or more months) can join the program. You do not need to be referred by a doctor; you can refer yourself to the program.

The program is facilitated by nursing and allied health staff from CHS’ community care team, Ms Hillenaar said. All facilitators are trained in the Flinders Program for self-management of chronic conditions and regularly work with people with chronic conditions.

“It goes through how you manage the impacts of your chronic conditions on your life: impacts on

emotional health, mental health, physical health, social wellbeing,” Ms Hillenaar said. “It looks at: do you know where to find accurate information about your condition and medication? Do you know what to do when things don’t go right? Do you know what services are out there, and how to access them? If there are any gaps, how can we help you to fill those gaps?”

“If anyone has the opportunity to do it, it really is worthwhile doing,” Kathy said. “I am more in control. Before, [my condition] defined me. Whereas now, knowing I can’t do something doesn’t mean there aren’t things that I can do. It’s very important to keep doing the things you can, even if there are things you can’t.”

“Before, I just didn’t want to get out at all. The thought of going for a walk just didn’t appeal to me. But now it’s like, let’s find a lake, let’s find a bit of woodland, go to Hall, and walk around and find something interesting to get a photo of.”

The program also provides a valuable social element, Ms Hillenaar said. Many people who have chronic conditions feel alone and isolated. “The big thing is that they aren’t alone, that there are others going through it.”

There were six people in Kathy’s group. “What I found really good,” she said, “was because there were a few people there, you could bounce ideas off each other; and also, you found out that other people have similar problems to what you do. Even though their chronic condition might be different, the problems that result from it are similar. So that was a bit of a validation. It wasn’t something just in my head, it was reality. You’re not alone. There are other people there. And with the facilitator, or just doing the course, you realise there’s help out there as well.”

For instance, Kathy could see a dietitian, podiatrists, or physiotherapists if she needed to; all are community health services.

This year, Canberra Health Services will partner with Flinders University to research the effectiveness of the Flinders Program. Anyone who comes into the program will be invited to participate in the research, Ms Hillenaar said, but there is no pressure to take part.

To register for the Take Control – Live Well program, call Central Health Intake on (02) 5124 9977. For more information, email SelfManagement@act.gov.au.
