Brumbies to celebrate proud rugby history

The Safeguard Global ACT Brumbies will this week pay homage to their proud history, including the memorable 2004 Super Rugby Grand Final win over the Crusaders.

To mark the occasion, the Brumbies will don a special edition 2024 Heritage Jersey against the Crusaders in Round 13 of the Super Rugby Pacific competition this Saturday, 18 May. The match will kick o at 2:35pm at GIO Stadium.

Marking 20 years since the club lifted the coveted Super Rugby trophy, 2004 Grand Finalists Stephen Larkham, Joe Ro , Scott Fava and Jone Tawake were on hand to launch the 2024 Heritage Collection at GIO Stadium. Sporting the original ACT Brumbies logo from when the club was established in 1996, the 2024 Heritage Jersey features a distinguished navy blue collar, evoking memories of one of the organisation’s greatest triumphs.

Played in front of a record Canberra Stadium crowd of 28,753, a record that still stands today, the 2004 Super Rugby Grand Final was considered one of the most entertaining finals in the competition’s history. The win was highlighted by a Brumbies fivetry opening blitz that blew the home side out to a

33-0 lead after just 20 minutes.

The Canterbury-based Crusaders, one of the most successful Super Rugby franchises, staged a comeback to cut the lead down to 40-28 with a couple of minutes remaining. A try to Joe Ro shut down the Crusaders’ momentum, the Brumbies holding on to clinch their second Super Rugby title in front of a boisterous Canberra crowd, 47-38.

ACT Brumbies 47 (Tries: Mark Gerrard 3, Joe Ro 2, Jeremy Paul and Matt Giteau; Conversions: Joe Ro 6) def. Crusaders 38 (Tries: Richie McCaw, Aaron Mauger, Brad Thorn, Chris King, Casey Laulala and Daniel Carter; Conversions: Daniel Carter 4)

The special edition Heritage Collection range will also include a retro training top, beanie and jumper to commemorate the club’s proud history. The collection is available for purchase on the Brumbies online store at shop.brumbies.com.au

The lead-up to the Brumbies’ Round 13 fixture against the Crusaders will feature the organisation’s annual State of the Union event on Friday 17 May, at the iconic Hotel Realm. Brought to you by GowGates Insurance Brokers, the Rugby Luncheon serves as the major fundraiser for local communitydriven rugby programs as well as the pathways and academies for men and women.

A guest panel featuring Brumbies alumni David Gi n and Owen Finegan, as well as former Crusaders players Corey Flynn and Aaron Mauger, will be present. The lunch is a three-course sit-down where guests can enjoy networking, mingling with rugby greats, and an entertaining guest panel. The event will also feature a live auction with multiple luxurious items and experiences, o ering guests ample opportunities to make an impact while treating themselves. Additionally, all the gameworn Brumbies jerseys from the following night’s Crusaders match at GIO Stadium will be added to the auction list.

Celebrating ACT Law Week and 125 years

This year’s ACT Law Week coincides with the 125th anniversary of the establishment of Carroll & O’Dea Lawyers in 1899.

“This is an incredible milestone for the firm which has been supporting Canberrans for more than two decades!” said Diana Farah, the first female equity partner appointed to Carroll & O’Dea Lawyers in 100 years.

“Our 125-year anniversary is much more than a commemoration of our longevity as a firm. As we see it, it is a recognition of the enduring values that have underpinned our success to date and which inspire us for the future.

“We have been protecting the rights of Canberrans when it comes to workplace injuries, motor vehicle accidents, public liability, medical negligence, Comcare claims as well as estates, wills, property and commercial transactions.

“One of the key milestones in our 125 years was securing history-making compensation in 1952 for the widows of workers killed in the

Burrinjuck Dam disaster, part of the Snowy Mountains Scheme. It was a win that foreshadowed modern-day compensation law in Australia whereby workers and their families are protected with access to justice and compensation.

“Nowhere is respect more important than in the legal community and over 125 years Carroll & O’Dea Lawyers has a well-earned reputation amongst our clients, our peers, our colleagues and the judiciary.

“People understand that Carroll & O’Dea is a firm they can trust, that will work with them with dignity, and we mean, and do, what we say. We are a family firm in the truest and widest sense, and our clients across Business, Community and Associations, Personal and Compensation Law feel that today as much as they have over the last 125 years. It is great to be celebrating ACT Law Week as well as our 125th anniversary,” said Ms Farah.

Carroll & O’Dea Lawyers has been serving the community for more than 125 years and the Canberra and surrounding areas for more than 25 years, working with clients to protect their rights and secure the compensation they deserve

If you or a family member or loved one have been injured or involved in an accident, it’s important to have the right team on your side

Who ya gonna call Canberra?

Some people are in the wrong profession, such as Canberra ghostbuster Natalie Laura, who’s scared of ghosts (quite a rational fear) but she’s a hardcore fan and destined for New York for Ghostbusters Day on 8 June.

This may sound like frivolous pop culture but Natalie has put Canberra on the map in the global Ghostbusters fandom (you’re welcome Visit Canberra), promoting the capital via her Canberra Ecto (car) and her charity, Answer The Second Call. In fact, an official deck of Ghostbusters cards on sale in the U.S. features Natalie’s Canberra charity on the king of clubs. Snap!

“Canberra is in the Buffalo Ghostbusters Charity playing card deck, which is unbelievable – one of two Australian franchises to make it in out of 90,” Natalie said. “I thought it would be pretty sweet to have little old Canberra in it, so I got people to vote for my Ecto. I went to Ghostbusters Day in New York last year, people would ask ‘Canberra, where’s that’? I had to explain.”

Buffalo Ghostbusters Charity in New York is one of hundreds of Ghostbusters charities – like Natalie’s – raising money through their love of the

film franchise. Natalie and hundreds of fans from around the world will converge on Ghostbusters Day at Hook and Ladder 8, the (real) New York firehouse where the original Ghostbusters movie was set 40 years ago.

Canberrans may recognise Natalie’s Ecto from the local Geek Fest held at Epic or the charitable ghostbusting she does around town.

“I offer a free service, I just ask people to donate to Roundabout Canberra,” Natalie said. “I recently visited a kid who’s a hardcore fan, the kids love that sort of thing. I don’t take any money. I’ve also done a superhero day at a school and birthday parties or just visit for a chat. I love driving past and seeing the faces on kids – and grown-ups.”

Natalie’s all-important proton pack, which costs a cool $3,000, is still being made in the UK (a five-year wait due to huge demand).

“They’re not cheap unless you make one yourself on a 3D printer,” she said. “It can take a while because they put in all the electronics in it so it’s movie standard. I’m still waiting.”

At home, Natalie has a Ghostbuster suit ($300 custom-made from NZ), sought-after collectibles

including movie props (actor Kate McKinnon’s equipment bag from the 2016 Ghostbusters: Answer The Call), a six-metre film promo display from Germany, dolls, books, stickers, and a production t-shirt from a film crew member. She’s even in regular contact with Hollywood director Paul Feig (Ghostbusters: Answer the Call and Bridesmaids).

As for actual ghostbusting, Natalie leaves that to the experts (like Tim the Yowie Man).

“I’d love to do paranormal investigations but it would probably scare the bejesus out of me,” she said. “To be involved in it and hear the true tales, I don’t know how I’d go, I don’t think I could do it. I know I’m a ghostbuster but a movie one though.”

As our community grapples with economic pressures, the demand for volunteer-driven services has surged significantly. This underscores the impact volunteers have on supporting the community, which extends far beyond their immediate act of service.

In 2023, more than 74% of the ACT population aged over 15 volunteered, according to the ACT State of Volunteering Report 2023. The report will be launched by VolunteeringACT during National Volunteer Week 2024 (20 – 26 May).

As highlighted in the findings, the top three motivations for volunteering in the ACT are:

• to help others (62%)

• to develop social connections (38%)

• for recreational purposes (35%) The study also indicates that more than 30% of volunteers intend to volunteer more hours in three years, and more than 40% of non-volunteers intend to volunteer within the next three years.

To celebrate this generous spirit of volunteering and kick o Australia’s biggest celebration of volunteers, VolunteeringACT invites you to the 2024 Volunteering Expo on Saturday 18 May, at the University of Canberra Refectory from 10am to 4pm.

The Expo celebrates the diversity of volunteering opportunities in the Canberra region and highlights the impactful work of ACT volunteer-involved organisations. At the Expo, you can:

• Meet representatives from a

diverse range of organisations seeking volunteers across the Canberra region.

• Connect with causes that align with your interests and values, whether you’re passionate about education, animal welfare, environmental causes or anything else.

• Learn about volunteer opportunities that allow you to contribute your talents and expertise.

• Mingle with fellow volunteers, swap stories, and get inspired by the collective power of giving back.

Whether you are a seasoned volunteer seeking a new role or looking to embark on your first volunteer opportunity, the 2024 Volunteering Expo promises to be a life-changing experience.

Spread the word and bring your friends and family! The more, the merrier, as we celebrate the spirit of volunteering.

Treats help further medical feats with Biggest Morning Tea

A morning spent with a warm cuppa in hand and enjoying some treats with friends seems like the perfect way to start a day. This can only be made sweeter with Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea - a nationwide event that encourages communities to get together and raise funds for those impacted by cancer.

Orchestrated by the Cancer Council and hosted by regular Australians and businesses across the country, funds raised through the Morning Tea go towards research, sun-safety education, access to professionals and other services that can help those facing a cancer diagnosis.

Thursday 23 May marks the big day this year but as the events are organised by those hosting them,

they can run before or after this date. Hosting her seventh Biggest Morning Tea is Canberra local Genevieve Power.

Now 17, Genevieve began hosting at 11 years old after coming across an advertisement for the Biggest Morning Tea. Loving all things baking and socialising with friends, Genevieve thought why not give the Morning Tea a go?

“It really started as an excuse to have friends over and bake a bunch of stuff. Then as the years went on, I got more serious about it, realising I can actually raise a decent amount of money,” she says.

That first year, the young baker raised $100. Last year, 2023, was her biggest fundraising year to date, receiving $1,100 in donations

for her baked goods.

Genevieve’s commitment to her baking and fundraising took on new meaning in 2018 when her mother, Janet, was diagnosed with breast cancer.

“We were really lucky that her breast cancer was treatable, it wasn’t this nightmare that it could have been. There were incredible treatments and incredible doctors who took care of her and we never had to worry that this could be really and for our family,” says Genevieve.

Putting the pieces together, Genevieve realised the fun event she holds every year can greatly impact the lives of families like hers. Always knowing where the money was going as the Council is transparent with funding, the experience helped put it

all into perspective for her.

“The reason that there has been such incredible research into the treatment she got, the reason those doctors might have been trained is because of the support of the Cancer Council.”

Could Jacob Vadakkedathu be our first non-white senator?

Plus more Canberra Independents

Good to see the Canberra Liberals preselect longtime Assembly hopeful Jacob Vadakkedathu as their number one Senate candidate and Hayune Lee, a defence analyst of Korean extraction, as their number two candidate. If Jacob is successful, he will be our first non-white Senator. Now I must confess a little bias here, as I have a Korean son-in-law called Lee and a tiny bit of Indian blood on my mother’s side.

Jacob has an impressive CV, being the inaugural President of the Federation of Indian Associations of ACT, and he was also the founding President of the Gungahlin Community Council. He runs a firm that provides business management and financial services. He is a former public servant. His priorities are improved infrastructure and a fairer share of Commonwealth resources spent in the ACT. He will face an uphill battle against the still-popular David

Pocock and Labor’s Katy Gallagher, who, despite a few blunders, should get back in, due to this being a strong Labor town. However, many people, even in the ACT, have been hit hard by the cost-of-living crisis, and Albo is not exactly covering himself in glory. So, it may be closer than you think.

On to local matters. The five candidates I saw push their wares last week at the Polish Club for pre-selection with the Independents for Canberra in Kurrajong and Murrumbidgee all seemed worthy contenders. For Kurrajong, we had my old mate Craig Emerson’s son Tom, a co-founder of the party, throw his hat in the ring. Tom works for David Pocock (and even looks a bit like him, although not so bulky – I think Tom was a 5/8). Tom used to run a fitness centre, so he has a small business background too. Sara Poguet from Red Hill is also running for that electorate, and she seemed enthusiastic and very keen. Sara runs Chez Freds restaurant in Braddon and helps older people in our community.

In Murrumbidgee, Indigenous leader Paula McGrady is seeking preselection. She has

extensive experience working in youth protection and youth crime areas and has worked at our youth detention centre Bimberi. Anne-Louise Dawes is another candidate. She doesn’t like Canberra bashers and has done a lot of volunteer work with the disabled. She presented well. Finally, I thought Nathan Naicker, a federal public servant, was the best presenter of the night. He lives in Denman Prospect with his wife and two children and is of South African Indian extraction. He is passionate about health and thinks the government needs to listen to doctors and nurses more.

I couldn’t get to the Brindabella preselection. I understand the Independents for Canberra committee will now select two lead candidates in each electorate.

Canberra needs a change, and in my view, Labor needs a clean-out and a term in opposition for its own sake after 23 years in government. Labor is not helped by its coalition partners the Greens whose policies have largely been detrimental to the ACT.

ACT workforce worth $3 billion per annum volunt r

olunteering is a cornerstone of our community. If volunteering was recognised as an industry, it would be the largest by workforce participation in the ACT. Volunteers create a ripple e ect that extends far beyond their immediate act of service.

This is one of the key findings of VolunteeringACT’s upcoming report, ‘ACT State of Volunteering Report 2023’.

Scheduled to launch during National Volunteer Week 2024 (20 - 26 May), the report indicates that more than 74% of the ACT population aged over 15 volunteered in 2023. The cost of replacing this workforce was calculated to be more than $3 billion for the government.

Based on the findings of the State of Volunteering Report, the top three motivations for volunteering in the ACT are to help others (62%), to develop social connections (38%), and for recreational purposes (35%).

Further, more than 30% of the existing volunteers intend to volunteer more of their time in three years, and more than 40% of non-volunteers intend to volunteer within the next three years.

Volunteering contributes to building healthier and more resilient communities and can encourage new interests and skills for volunteers.

Mehreen Jalib has participated firsthand in the impact of volunteers on community development. Since her early years, Mehreen has volunteered in projects for women’s empowerment and teaching disadvantaged children in India and the United Arab Emirates. Through these programs, Mehreen discovered her interest in teaching and found a sense of accomplishment. She now volunteers at the Community Information Hub in Canberra providing information and advice to the ACT public.

For international student Pranshu Sunil Shende, volunteering has proven to be the pathway to building social connections, skill development, and employment. Starting as a Community Engagement Volunteer, Pranshu became a Projects Assistant with VolunteeringACT after honing his project management skills as a volunteer.

The impact of volunteers’ e orts extends far beyond their own experience, touching countless lives.

Ariah Holmes has been an active volunteer for over a decade. She has volunteered at music

festivals, food security programs, and organisational governance. These opportunities have provided a platform for her to make new friends, develop new skills and find a pathway back to employment. Ariah is passionate about making volunteering accessible for everyone. She currently volunteers with Vinnies Roadhouse and Abundant Water.

Sara Barker lives with a disability and found comfort from volunteers who read to her at the hospital between treatments. She says this meant the world to her as she could not read or hold a book due to her medical conditions. This experience inspired her to help other people with disabilities and make a di erence for others. Today, she actively participates in VolunteeringACT’s program advisory group.

Volunteering connects us to the larger social fabric. By interacting with people in need, we gain a deeper understanding of our community. This fosters compassion and a sense of shared responsibility, encouraging us to advocate for positive change and contribute to a more inclusive Canberra.

Shaping Canberra’s future

Hats off to Alicia Payne and the parties responsible for the 22 recommendations contained in the Joint Parliamentary Committee report on the National Capital and External Territories. A report that underlines why Australians should be proud of our capital and how it stands as a symbol of our nation’s success as a liberal democracy. Unfortunately, it also highlights the neglect for decades by successive federal governments in extending international recognition for its role as the capital. Canberra was created by and for the federal parliament, initially built around earlier grandiose planning decisions. New governmental trends of economic rationalism, user pays, managerialism and all the rest of the 1980s rhetoric drove the Commonwealth’s Canberra policy away from this grandiose construction ethic of creating a monument to Australia’s national identity to one more inwardly focused towards the more limited role of a seat of government only; the same catalyst for the parliament to bestow ACT self-government. A paramount shift in outlook back then with many of the symbols of internationally recognised capital cities lacking and/ or not fulfilled – national exhibition and worldclass conferencing facilities, international standard

cultural and sporting facilities, and associated hospitality infrastructure. Now as outlined in the report, in a sense, if Canberra is to gain these tools, incumbent on the Commonwealth via the national parliament to deliver on the recommendations if the national capital is to fully achieve its aims – a city symbolising Australia’s heritage, values and aspirations, and is internationally recognised.

Thank you

On 27 March, I collapsed outside the entrance to Woden Plaza. As I lay on the ground, a young nurse came to my aid, as did two teenagers (a boy and girl) and a security guard. I was very unwell. The nurse kindly called an ambulance. I was very ill and was in hospital for nine days. Although now at home, I am still on the road to recovery, but getting there. I would like to say a very sincere thank you to the nurse, the two teenagers and the security guard for coming to help me in my time of need. I would love to thank them personally, but did not get their names and contact details. Perhaps they would like to contact me through the Canberra Weekly if they read this and I will contact them directly.

- Cathy Ross, Calwell

Media balance

A. Kusta, like many letter writers in Canberra, seems to get upset when their “progressive” views are challenged. I didn’t see any of the “intellectual rigour” they talk about in their recent letter in Canberra Weekly (9 May). If you don’t mind a conservative view, why are there no conservatives that regularly write in The Canberra Times? Like you said, there are other printed publications available but Canberra has only one local daily paper and it does not, in my opinion, have a balance of views that a one-town newspaper should espouse. Seeing as you asked; I think like many others I would support the death penalty for murder. The taking of one’s life is a serious crime and deserves a serious punishment. Or is this too conservative for your progressive views?

Concerns about the World Health Organization’s pandemic treaty reforms

Most Australians are likely unaware of the proposed new World Health Organization’s (WHO) Pandemic Treaty or the 2005 International Health Regulations (IHR) Amendments which are currently being discussed in Geneva and are due to be voted upon, in the week of 27 May.

The WHO is the health arm of the United Nations and is a Member State-led organisation made up of 194 countries, including Australia.

The proposed pandemic treaty reforms include extensive amendments to the 2005 IHR and a new pandemic treaty.

Ramesh Thakur, Emeritus Professor in the Crawford School of Public Policy, The Australian National University, and former Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations, has grave concerns if these reforms are not rejected in their current form before 27 May this year.

“The two sets of changes to the architecture of global health governance will effectively change the WHO from a technical advisory organisation offering recommendations, into a supranational public health authority telling governments what to do,” he says.

Last Saturday in Melbourne, a panel of experts including Thakur, Dr David Bell (former WHO medical doctor and scientist), Professor Augusto Zimmermann, (law academic) and Professor Ian Brighthope (medical doctor), spoke to an audience of over 600 at a press conference to discuss the significant implications of these.

to these Regulations shall be initiated and completed without delay and applied in a transparent and nondiscriminatory manner.’

The Australian Department of Health and Aged Care website states:

“Signing a new international instrument and IHR changes may create new international le-gal obligations for Australia. However, this doesn’t automatically change Australian law – only the Australian Parliament can do this. Any legally binding pandemic instrument and IHR changes must go through parliamentary processes before Australia can take binding action. This includes consideration by the Joint Standing Committee. “

Why should Australians doubt the WHO?

Dr Bell reported that the WHO’s changed funding arrangements means that it is no longer the independent agency it once was and is heavily influenced by major donors.

“The WHO once based its priorities on assessment of disease burden and country need. It has now become a public-private partnership with most of its work directly specified by its funders, who include pharmaceutical companies and their private investors,” he said.

The Australian Government has responded to concerns of the panel.

One amendment of concern to the panel is Article 42 of the proposed IHR amendments which includes that WHO Member States would be bound to do what the WHO advises:

‘Health measures taken pursuant

“The COVID-19 pandemic demonstrated we need strengthened capacities to respond to fu-ture pandemics. To achieve this, Member States of the World Health Organization are nego-tiating a new pandemic agreement and amendments to the International Health Regula-tions (2005). Australia is actively engaging in these negotiations to promote our national in-terests.” - Bernie Ryan

The ACT Integrity Commission confirmed on Monday it would launch a probe into the conduct of Walter Sofronoff KC, saying it “may constitute corrupt conduct”.

The allegations relate to Mr Sofronoff’s dealings with journalists during a 2023 board of inquiry hearing and his decision to release the final report to two journalists before it was handed over to ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr.

“The commissioner has completed his assessment of these allegations and has decided to commence an investigation into the impugned conduct as he suspects, on reasonable grounds, that Mr Sofronoff’s conduct may constitute corrupt conduct,” the ACT Integrity Commission said in a statement.

“As the investigation is ongoing, the commission will not be making any further public comments at this time.”

The inquiry was set up to examine the handling of the criminal prosecution of Bruce Lehrmann, who was accused of raping Brittany Higgins in Parliament House in 2019.

Lehrmann had denied the allegations, and his 2022 criminal trial was abandoned due to jury misconduct.

A retrial was called off over concerns about Ms Higgins’ health.

In April, a Federal Court judge found during a defamation hearing that on the balance of probabilities that Lehrmann raped Ms Higgins.

A place of faith, learning and opportunity that provides education opportunities for all

A board of inquiry, chaired by Mr Sofronoff, was set up to examine the prosecution of the original criminal trial, leading to ACT top prosecutor Shane Drumgold resigning after damning findings were made against him.

Mr Sofronoff’s final report found the ex-director of public prosecutions had engaged in unethical conduct during the Lehrmann trial.

Mr Drumgold launched legal action last August to invalidate the adverse findings, with his lawyers arguing Mr Sofronoff’s communications with Janet Albrechtsen, a columnist at The Australian, had “infected” him with bias.

The ACT Supreme Court was told Ms Albrechtsen had written a number of articles critical of Mr Drumgold.

Acting Justice Stephen Kaye in April found Mr Sofronoff’s behaviour “gave rise to a reasonable intention of bias”.

Mr Drumgold later said he was “delighted” with the ruling and looked forward to moving on after resigning.

Fecal attraction and other culinary delights

Food and art go hand in hand, but what if we switch the focus from food before it has been ingested to the digestion process? Would we still love the art? ANU Associate Professor Lindsay Kelley will launch her new book After Eating: Metabolising the Arts at the ANU School of Art & Design on Wednesday 5 June.

In her second published book, Ms Kelley

explores what she believes are key relationships between digestion and metabolism and cultural, creative and policitcal processes. Indulging in the emerging field of metabolic arts, the author discusses how the experience of eating changes when it is technologies being digested.

The launch shares a recipe from the book - the Fecal Attractaction cocktail. The performative serving also offers non-alcohol options. A number of signed editions will also be available on the night. The launch is a free, ticketed event.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (M)

Many generations after the death of ape-leader Caesar as depicted in War for the Planet of the Apes (2017), Noa (Owen Teague), the son of the leader of a falconry clan, prepares for a coming of age ceremony. Soon, however, a raider tribe of apes overtakes the village, leaving Noa as its sole survivor.

The Planet of the Apes franchise kicked off with the 1968 film and has since spawned 10 movies, a TV series, comic books and video games. The franchise’s longevity may be due to its ongoing relevancy as it parallels Earth’s political history including race, conflicts and evolution. The apes themselves are easy to empathise with due to the clear communication expressed through their body gestures, facial features, and incredibly emotive eyes.

Noa is central to this straightforward hero’s journey, questing to find his lost

tribe and to bring them home. On the way, Noa meets fellow travellers who both teach and challenge his beliefs of his home world: orangutan Raka (Peter Macon) embodies the cooperative philosophy of the original Caesar, while the mysterious Nova (Freya Allan) may have other plans. The dastardly Proximu Caesar (Kevin Durand) has perverted the philosophy, usurping Caesar’s legacy to establish himself into a position of power for his own gain.

Filmed in Sydney, the movie looks amazing, making you feel for the main ape characters’ plight without an uncanny valley in sight.

Verdict: An amazing sweeping epic told simply and personally like The Lion King (1994) and Avatar (2009) which unfortunately, like Bladerunner 2049 (2017), leaves too many elements for a future entry.

Everything you need to know about post-operative bras

What is a post-operative bra?

A post-operative bra is a specially designed bra for individuals who have undergone any type of breast surgery. These bras are designed to provide comfort and promote healing.

Why do I need a post-operative bra?

Post-operative bras offer crucial support during the recovery phase. They are designed with features such as front closures, adjustable straps, and soft materials to minimise discomfort. These bras also help maintain proper shape and alignment during the healing process.

It’s typically recommended to start wearing a post-operative bra immediately after surgery, as soon as your healthcare professional gives you the green light. Your bra is worn all day and to sleep in.

When should I stop wearing a post-operative bra?

It’s typically recommended to wear it for 6 weeks. The length of time will depend on the healing of your surgery.

How is a post-operative bra different from regular bras?

pockets to hold lightweight breast forms or prostheses, soft seams, and gentle materials to avoid irritation on sensitive skin.

Are there different types of post-operative bras?

Yes, there are different types of post-operative bras. Comfort bras are usually worn after a lump removal or mastectomy without reconstruction. Compression bras are usually worn for reconstruction. Ask your surgeon or breast care nurse which bra is right for you.

How do I choose the right size post-operative bra?

It’s crucial to consult with a certified mastectomy fitter to determine the appropriate size. Factors such as

swelling, changes in breast size, and type of surgery will be considered to ensure a comfortable and supportive fit.

Remember, always consult with your healthcare professional for personalised advice and recommendations based on your unique recovery.

At Colleen’s, we are trained mastectomy fitters dedicated to supporting you not only at diagnosis but also throughout your recovery and beyond.

Passionate, qualified and dedicated to ensuring their clients feel the best they can, the team at Authentix Beauty and Wellness Clinic in Braddon makes their clients feel beautiful from the inside out.

“I believe empowering someone to feel confident and happy with their body will flow into their lifestyle,” says Shahnee Jewel, owner and managing director.

Having operated in the ACT for over 10 years, Authentix o ers all the traditional hair-scaping options, specialising in all-gender Brazilian waxing. They pride themselves on their lash and brow services and designing techniques. But what sets Authentix apart is their dedication to holistic wellbeing, o ering Canberra’s first closed system colon hydrotherapy service.

Better known as a colonic, warm water is used to flush the colon and remove toxins and waste that may be causing us to feel sluggish, fatigued or dealing with brain fog. Although some may find the idea uncomfortable, the team ensures that clients feel at ease, and any initial awkwardness is far outweighed by the benefits. With over two decades of experience in Colon Hydrotherapy, Shahnee is well-versed in its benefits.

“We’ve seen so many amazing benefits with colonics, from helping with depression, anxiety fertility… A healthy gut should have around 2kg of good bacteria to be able to digest food properly. Most of our guts, especially with stress and processed foods, have approx. 800gms!” she says. Their infrared sauna uses technology that eliminates the heavy air of steam saunas, essentially warming the client rather than the environment. The

process aids with skin problems, sleep and weight issues and aids in faster muscle and cellular recovery.

“When we incorporate the sauna with colon hydrotherapy, an internal detoxing process has begun. We have the added advantage to follow the sauna with a colonic which will help to flush out those moving toxins and rehydrate the body.”

After searching high and low for five years Ms Jewel was after a more natural approach to skin lightening, one without harmful bleach e ects. Using the BRYGHT lightening system, you can lighten dark patches without compromising your skin.

“Most women have an area on our body that we’re not comfortable with, the more we can talk about it and make ourselves feel more comfortable with the bodies that we have, the more we can come to accept and love ourselves,” says Shahnee.

The psychological benefits of volunteering

What is volunteering?

Volunteering is when we offer to do something free of charge without being forced to do it, motivated by free will and a desire to help others. For example, we might volunteer to help plant trees in the botanical gardens, make a cake for a colleague’s birthday, make some food for a church morning tea or hand out flyers for an organisation. It can be offering our time, our expertise or skills, or helping out with something we have never done before but want to learn.

What are the benefits of volunteering?

When we think of the benefits of volunteering, we often think of the benefits to an organisation or cause through our altruistic acts. But there are lots of positives to being a volunteer. Research has shown that volunteering, whether it involves doing

something for someone or an organisation, benefits a person’s mental and physical health as well as their social wellbeing. Volunteering often makes us feel good, gets us interacting with others and involves moving the body.

Think about the reasons why a person might volunteer their time or their skills. Sometimes we think a person volunteers because they’re a good person, which is often true. However, a lot of the time a person volunteers because it gives them a sense of purpose and meaning. They do it because the cause is important to them and they feel positive emotions from engaging in the activity. People usually volunteer because they enjoy it, and it doesn’t have to be connected to an organisation, it can even be helping a friend move to a new house.

When a person volunteers their time to a cause that’s close to their heart and important to them, they feel they are giving their time to something personally valuable. That not only makes them feel worthwhile and satisfied, but it adds to their sense of autonomy. Older adults are much more likely to

volunteer, often because they have the time, can control what they do and are clear on their values.

People sometimes volunteer to learn new skills by volunteering for something completely different from their area of paid employment. Others want to use their competence in an area such as helping with a political campaign.

Connecting with like-minded people is a big part of the fulfilment of volunteering, including getting to know new people and developing friendships.

The warnings about volunteering

We have to set boundaries and be mindful of how much time we want to give, and also be reliable if we commit to something. People volunteer for many reasons and the why is important. Feeling obligated to volunteer doesn’t have the same satisfaction as choosing to do it because you genuinely want to.

So, if you’re thinking about volunteering, choose something that is important to you and decide how much time and effort you want to invest in it.

Improve flexibility in just 8 minutes a week

It is time to ditch the intense stretching sessions that encourage you to push yourself past the point of pain in the name of being more limber. An exciting new study from the University of South Australia has discovered it takes as little as eight minutes each week to optimise flexibility progress.

The first study of its kind to identify optimal parameters for stretching saw researchers examine the impacts of static stretching. The method is used when you lengthen a muscle and hold the position for a predetermined amount of time. UniSA researcher Dr Lewis Ingram says it is the most common type of stretching and it is both safe and effective.

“It is used extensively by sports medicine practitioners and coaches to improve flexibility for rehabilitation and performance, but despite this, there is no consensus about the optimal dosage parameters for increasing flexibility,

says Dr Ingram. “In this study, we wanted to find out how long, how hard, and how often someone should stretch to increase their flexibility.”

The results showed all that was needed was a static stretch to be held for up to three minutes, or eight minutes throughout the week, to improve the flexibility of that muscle. Stretching to the point of discomfort or pain was found to add no extra benefit.

The researchers, including Dr Ingram, were surprised to learn that the flexibility improvements maxed out at three minutes per muscle per session and at eight minutes per muscle per week.

“Specifically, in the case of the latter, it doesn’t seem to matter how often a week you spend stretching, so long as you accumulate eight minutes over the week.”

The study systemically reviewed and

meta-analysed data from 188 studies involving 8,095 adults from 25 countries. Their findings show that a single session of static stretching led to a moderate increase in flexibility, while longer-term static stretching conducted regularly over a few weeks led to a larger increase.

“These improvements occurred irrespective of the specific muscle group, the intensity of the stretch, the person’s sex, their health or training status, and the frequency of weekly stretching sessions or overall length of the intervention,” says Dr Ingram.

Tips to help your garden flourish in Canberra

Canberra’s extreme climate, with its freezing winters and boiling summers, poses challenges not just for residents but for gardens as well. However, understanding climate-wise principles can help develop lush landscapes that thrive year-round.

People often assume a climate-wise garden means a low-water garden. This isn’t always the case. It doesn’t have to be all cactus and gravel, it can be beautiful with lush trees and vegetation.

Landscape architect Edwina Robinson notes the strategic use of water-intensive plants near homes to aid in cooling: “It is okay to have an area close to your house that you frequently use, which might have slightly higher water-use plants to serve as an evaporative cooler. If your house is well-designed, you can pull that cool air into your home.”

While Ms Robinson emphasises that a climate-wise garden doesn’t solely focus on minimising water use, she highlights the importance of preparing for water scarcity: “We need to be thinking about, can we have some of our water and store it in rainwater tanks? Can we store water in our

soils? Can we store water in dry creek beds and frog ponds and kind of irrigate the landscape in a passive way rather than by turning on a tap?”

Ideally, your garden will be a happy and functional space throughout the whole weather spectrum, providing a cool comfortable environment in summer and sheltered, sunny spaces in winter.

A well-designed climate-wise garden will have spaces that provide shelter from rain and wind. For times of heavy rain, Ms Robinson says it can be tricky, but you want to slow down the water flow on the block. This can be achieved by terracing, good soil and limiting hard surfaces.

“In our modern lifestyle, we pave over everything. You actually don’t want to do that. You want to have your soil full of organics so it can absorb water rather than having it incredibly dry where the water just runs off the top of it and straight into our waterways and untreated.

In times of dry heat, Ms. Robinson advises planting densely, as plants act as nature’s evaporative coolers.

“As much as possible, slow down the water flow on your property and harvest it into the ground. This way, plants can naturally absorb the harvested water, including the water you’ve paid for, to support their growth process.”

Creating a cooling climate-conscious environment in an apartment setting can be a bit trickier, as tenants often don’t have a lot of control of the vegetation that surrounds them.

“They could have lush plants on a balcony and there’s a lovely book by Indira Naidoo, The Edible Balcony, that shows you what you can create on a small balcony,” she says.

Not everyone can afford to create a beautiful, lush garden all at once. Ms Robinson recommends the way to start is by planting a tree in the right place.

Rate hikes divide housing market as ACT property values decline

Amidst Australia’s historic two-year rate hike cycle, the property market has become a picture of resilience and decline, showcasing stark contrasts across cities, suburbs, and regions.

A CoreLogic Australia analysis comparing the property market’s performance two years before and after the rate hike cycle reveals that home values across the nation have risen only 2.8% since April 2022, contrasting sharply with the substantial 31.7% increase observed in the preceding two years.

Nationally, 37.9% of suburbs have recorded a decline in dwelling values since the rate hike cycle began, with 87.6% of ACT suburbs declining.

Key ACT findings:

• Canberra is the second weakest

capital city market since rate hikes began. Home values are -6% down, with 87.6% (85) of suburbs still below April 2022 levels.

• Only 4.1% (4) of ACT suburbs are at record highs.

• Taylor and Denman Prospect have been the strongest house markets in the ACT since rates started rising, up 20.1% and 13.8% respectively. Forrest was the strongest unit market, up 9.2%.

• Lyons and Chifley were the weakest house markets, with values down -17.4% and -16.1% respectively, while Kambah was the weakest unit market (-6.6%).

• The median value for dwellings in the ACT is currently $847,604, down from $901,791 in April 2022.
