ACTIVE AGING

AGE STRONGER, LIVE LONGER

Active aging continues to hold the number one spot as a leading health and fitness trend for 2025 (#1 in 2024), driven by a growing population committed to staying physically, mentally, and socially, engaged. As life expectancy rises, individuals are increasingly prioritizing quality of life by maintaining mobility, strength, and independence well into their late 70s, 80s , and beyond. This trend emphasizes tailored fitness programs that focus on functional movement, balance and stability training, as well as strength training to prevent age-related decline and reduce the risk of chronic diseases. From mobility programs designed to improve flexibility and movement patterns to resistance training programs that enhance bone density and muscle mass, active aging is redefining what it means to grow older. Jennifer Sawyer, founder and lead instructor at North End Fitness & Training and Sharon Mann Inspiration Award & Scholarship winner 2024 adds, “At North End Fitness, we embrace active aging by showcasing older adults engaged in strength conditioning. This reflects a shift toward lifelong fitness, inspiring younger generations and aligning with the needs of an active, healthy aging population.”

In addition to physical fitness, the active aging movement underscores the importance of mental health and cognitive sharpness. Research shows that regular exercise can enhance brain function, improve memory, and alleviate symptoms of depression and anxiety, which are common in aging populations. Group classes like yoga, aqua fitness, and dance not only provide physical benefits but also stimulate the brain through complex movement patterns and social interaction.

There’s a growing cultural shift that views aging as an opportunity, not a limitation. By embracing active aging, individuals are proving that age is just a number and that the journey to better health, vitality, and well-being never truly ends. “This underscores a positive shift toward proactive, lifelong health management,” says Claudiu Popa, personal trainer, active aging educator, and owner of WorkoutSmart.ca. As a result, active aging is more than a trend; it’s a lifestyle revolution inspiring people of all ages to rethink their potential and embrace the pathway to longevity. Trevor Pickett, founder of Offbeat Fitness and canfitpro PRO TRAINER adds, “Seeing this trend as number one inspires me to keep finding new and creative ways to serve this population. I hope, as an industry, we will continue to make this a top priority so that our aging population may thrive.”

“WITH THE AGING POPULATION STRIVING FOR FITNESS AND HEALTH, ACTIVE AGING WILL DOMINATE IN THE COMING YEARS. THE KEY WILL BE PROPER ASSESSMENTS OF THE BODY’S COMPLEX SYSTEMS TO GUIDE EFFECTIVE TRAINING, AND LEVERAGING AI WILL BE A GAMECHANGER FOR ACHIEVING FITNESS GOALS.

FUNCTIONAL FITNESS

EVERYDAY MOVES FOR EVERYDAY STRENGTH

Functional fitness has proven to be a steady trend in the fitness and health industry (#2 in 2024) that focuses on training the body for real-life movements and daily activities. Unlike traditional weightlifting or isolated exercises, functional fitness emphasizes multi-joint, compound movements that enhance strength, mobility, balance, and flexibility in a practical, holistic way. This type of training mimics natural patterns such as squatting, pushing, pulling, lifting, and rotating, which are essential for tasks like carrying groceries, playing with children, or even improving posture while working at a desk. By incorporating balance and stability type equipment (up two spots to #2 from 2024) such as resistance bands, suspension trainers, balance boards and stability balls, and body weight, functional fitness exercises are accessible and adaptable for people of all fitness levels. The trend aligns with the growing demand for sustainable, injury-preventive workouts that enhance quality of life and lay the foundation for longevity – adding life to our years. For Kyla Faganely, owner of Fit Bodies, Fit Minds and Personal Training Specialist of the Year 2024, functional fitness has been a cornerstone of her philosophy, “Exercises that answer a strong “why” are the foundation for improving not just gym performance, but everyday functionality. This principle resonates across demographics, from youth to active agers, and aligns with the growing recognition that purposeful movement is essential for lifelong vitality.”

One of the key drivers behind the popularity of functional fitness is its role in injury prevention and rehabilitation. By focusing on core stability, joint health, and overall movement efficiency, functional fitness reduces the risk of common injuries that occur due to muscular imbalances or a sedentary lifestyle. It is particularly beneficial for older adults, as it promotes better balance, coordination, and strength, enabling them to maintain independence and confidence in their daily lives. For athletes and fitness enthusiasts, functional training offers performance-enhancing benefits that translate directly into their sports or activities.

Functional fitness also integrates well with other health trends, such as bootcamp-style conditioning, group fitness, active recovery, and mindful movement practices like yoga and Pilates. This fusion provides diverse, engaging workouts that meet the physical and mental needs of today’s fitness consumer. Furthermore, as more people recognize the importance of holistic wellness, functional fitness continues to hold its own as an essential part of a healthy, active lifestyle. Fitness professionals are increasingly offering functional fitness programs in personal training sessions, group classes, and online platforms, highlighting its versatility and effectiveness. In a world where movement quality often takes a backseat to sedentary habits, functional fitness is redefining exercise as a tool for longevity, independence, and improved performance in everyday life.

WHEN I TEACH MY CARDIO STRENGTH CLASS, I ALWAYS PROMOTE THE IMPORTANCE OF FUNCTIONAL FITNESS AS A TRAINING PROTOCOL FOR EXCELLING AT THE MOST IMPORTANT SPORT OF ALL—THE SPORT OF LIFE. FUNCTIONAL FITNESS IS ESPECIALLY ESSENTIAL FOR ACTIVE AGING AS IT EMPOWERS PEOPLE TO MOVE BETTER, FEEL STRONGER, AND MAINTAIN INDEPENDENCE, ENABLING THEM TO TRULY THRIVE AT EVERY STAGE OF LIFE.

MENTAL HEALTH, MINDFULNESS, AND STRESS REDUCTION

STRESS LESS, THRIVE MORE

Mental health, mindfulness, and stress reduction hold their spot at #3 for 2025 (#3 in 2024) as pivotal health and fitness trends, reflecting a mainstream shift toward holistic health. Chronic stress, emotional strain, and mental fatigue are pervasive issues that demand solutions beyond traditional exercise routines. Fitness professionals are now integrating mindfulness-based practices, such as meditation, deep breathing, and somatic movement, into their programs to address both the physical and emotional dimensions of health while brick and mortar locations are dedicating floor space to mind-body, wellness, and recovery rooms to not only calm the mind but also enhance self-awareness, helping individuals better manage stress and anxiety. Activities like forest bathing or mindful walking are becoming mainstream as people recognize their capacity to reduce cortisol levels, regulate emotions, and improve overall mood. Similarly, fitness technology is adapting to these needs, with apps and wearables offering guided mindfulness sessions, sleep tracking, and biofeedback to measure stress levels in real time.

There is a growing understanding that physical performance and mental well-being are interconnected, as stress can impair recovery, reduce energy levels, and disrupt sleep patterns— all which impact fitness outcomes. By focusing on mind-body integration, fitness professionals empower individuals to build resilience, improve focus, and experience greater satisfaction in both workouts and daily life. Tara Dinyer, professor and program coordinator at Mohawk College, canfitpro FIS and PTS, shares her insight, “In the college fitness programs, we are seeing an increased need from students looking for tools and strategies to effectively coach mind-body programs. This highlights the importance for fitness and health professionals to be taking a holistic approach to programming, addressing both physical activity and recovery strategies.”

This trend aligns with the growing body of research affirming the link between exercise, mindfulness, and brain health. Regular movement combined with mindful practices can increase endorphin production, promote neuroplasticity, and reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety. For fitness enthusiasts and professionals alike, incorporating stress reduction and mindfulness into training represents a powerful shift: one that prioritizes balance, recovery, and emotional health as cornerstones of long-term well-being. Kyla Faganely, owner of Fit Bodies, Fit Minds and Personal Training Specialist of the Year 2024, echoes the importance of this trend, “We aim to enhance recovery and mindfulness practices by incorporating techniques to balance the nervous system, helping clients manage stress and maximize results.”

By embracing this comprehensive approach, the fitness industry is leading the charge toward a healthier, more mindful future — where mental fitness is just as important as physical strength.

GROUP FITNESS AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

STRONGER TOGETHER

Group fitness classes and programming (up one spot from 2024) have emerged as a cornerstone of health and wellness, offering individuals a dynamic and engaging way to achieve their fitness goals while fostering a sense of community. In 2025, this trend continues to evolve, driven by innovation, inclusivity, and a renewed focus on holistic well-being. Jennifer Sawyer, founder and lead instructor at North End Fitness & Training and Sharon Mann Inspiration Award & Scholarship winner 2024 echoes these insights as she shares, “Our business thrives by embracing emerging fitness trends, with group fitness classes driving slightly higher revenue and bookings than personal training. This success stems from their affordability, flexible scheduling, and the social connections they foster. Members value the community and variety of group fitness classes, making it a cornerstone of our offerings and a reflection of evolving customer preferences.”

Programming has expanded beyond traditional, specific formats to incorporate fusion-style modalities that blend different disciplines, such as yoga, Pilates, dance, and kickboxing, reflecting the growing connection between mental and physical health. These diverse offerings address the increasing demand for mind-body wellness and functional movement alongside cardio and strength training.

One of the major opportunities that continues to grow in group fitness programming is the integration of technology, which provides participants with real-time touch points, enhancing motivation and personalization. Apps for class bookings and payment solutions provide convenience and encourage retention while gamified workouts and virtual leaderboards encourage friendly competition, accountability, and participation—whether in-person or via hybrid formats that combine live classes with on-demand options. This flexibility caters to individuals with busy schedules, making fitness more accessible than ever before.

Instructors play a key role in shaping class experiences by adopting motivational coaching styles that prioritize connection, mental health, and overall well-being over aesthetic goals alone. The emphasis on fostering emotional resilience and reducing burnout through movement reflects a deeper understanding of fitness as a holistic tool for living better.

Group fitness classes are no longer just about physical transformation —they are about connection, empowerment, and mental rejuvenation. As programming evolves to meet the demands of an ever-changing world, it’s clear that group fitness will continue to inspire and unite individuals, creating stronger, healthier, and more connected communities.

GROUP FITNESS BRINGS PEOPLE TOGETHER, CREATING A SENSE OF COMMUNITY THAT GOES BEYOND THE WORKOUT. BY OFFERING ACCESSIBLE AND INCLUSIVE CLASSES, IT INSPIRES CONNECTION, ACCOUNTABILITY, AND LONG-TERM COMMITMENT TO HEALTH AND WELLNESS.

PERSONAL TRAINING AND COACHING COACHING THAT DELIVERS RESULTS

Personal training continues to rise as a top trend for 2025 (up one spot from 2024), driven by increasing demand for customized health and wellness solutions. Today’s fitness enthusiasts are seeking more than generic workout plans—they’re looking for highly personalized experiences tailored to their unique goals, physical needs, and lifestyles. Advancements in technology and data analytics are playing a pivotal role in reshaping personal training, enabling trainers to provide real-time feedback and problem solving, track progress with precision, and deliver hyper-customized programs. Wearable fitness devices, AI-powered platforms, and virtual personal training sessions allow clients to access expert coaching anytime, anywhere, blurring the lines between in-person and digital fitness.

In 2025, personal trainers are also embracing a more holistic approach, addressing not just physical fitness but also mental health, nutrition, recovery, and behavioural coaching. This reflects the growing recognition of the mind-body connection and the importance of sustainable health practices. Trainers are incorporating stress management techniques, mindfulness exercises, and personalized recovery protocols to support clients in achieving longterm success. Additionally, the demand for specialized personal trainers—such as those focused on aging populations, chronic pain management, and athletic performance— continues to expand, as people seek experts who understand their specific needs.

With a stronger emphasis on building relationships, personal trainers are trusted wellness partners who empower clients to achieve transformative results. “The future of personal training lies in creating irreplaceable connections through real-time problemsolving, daily engagement, and health tracking technology,” says Chad Benson, CEO and lead instructor at MovBetter Personal Training Inc., PTAcademy.ca, and canfitpro PRO TRAINER. Creating a tailored experience that fosters motivation, accountability, and measurable progress will play a crucial role in helping individuals navigate their wellness journey with precision, adaptability, purpose, and “drive long-term success for both trainers and clients,” adds Benson.

AS A DOCTOR OF CHIROPRACTIC MEDICINE, I WHOLEHEARTEDLY ALIGN WITH THIS POWERFUL STATEMENT: “IF YOU THINK LIFTING WEIGHTS IS DANGEROUS, TRY BEING WEAK. BEING WEAK IS DANGEROUS.” WHILE THE ORIGINAL SOURCE OF THIS QUOTE IS UNKNOWN, IT RESONATES DEEPLY WITH THE 2025 TRENDS.

I’M NOT SURPRISED TO SEE THAT FOUR OF THE TOP FIVE TRENDS INVOLVE LIFTING WEIGHTS. THERE’S A BEAUTIFUL SYNERGY BETWEEN TRADITIONAL FITNESS METHODS AND A RESURGENCE OF STRENGTH TRAINING—LIFTING HEAVY THINGS— FOR EVERYONE, WITH AN EMPHASIS ON INCLUSION REGARDLESS OF AGE, GENDER, OR BODY SIZE. ADDITIONALLY, THE INTEGRATION OF MENTAL HEALTH AND THE MIND-BODY CONNECTION IS A VITAL EVOLUTION. REFLECTING ON PAST FITNESS TRENDS, IT’S CLEAR THAT THIS HOLISTIC APPROACH IS MAKING A MUCH-NEEDED RETURN.
