How your favourite strains were created

Weed as we know it today looks a lot different to how it did in the wild—but how did we get here?

Over centuries, we’ve refined the cannabis plant to give us higher potencies, better growing times, different flavours, and bigger yields. This process of refining has given us a vast catalog of strains to choose from, from White Widow to Sour OG.

We’re taking a look at some of the terms you’ll come across when looking at your next strain to pick up: what indica and sativa actually mean, phenotypes and genotypes, seedbanks, and more.

What are cannabis strains?

Cannabis strains are essentially different breeds of the cannabis plant, each with unique appearances,

growth patterns, flavor profiles, and cannabinoid and terpene content. Over the years, growers have refined these strains from their landrace forms (those

found in the wild) to the bud-heavy, potent, and aromatic cultivars we have today.

You’ll see three plant types in our stores: indica, sativa, and hybrid

Indica: Indicas are shorter, denser plants with wider leaves and darker colours. They originated in cooler, mountainous climates like Afghanistan and Tibet.

Sativa: Sativas tend to stretch taller, with thinner leaves and lighter greens. They come from warmer climates, such as South Africa and Southeast Asia.

Hybrid: As growers have created new strains, they’ve bred indica and sativa together to develop new smells, effects, and plant properties. In fact, almost all strains are hybrids of indica and sativa in different percentages, with a few notable exceptions, such as landrace strains like Durban Poison.

How strains evolved

Traditional landrace strains formed the genetic backbone of modern cannabis. These plants were refined slowly over centuries as we spread them across continents, slowly adapting them to new local environments, where they developed unique characteristics.

Starting around the 1950s, counterculture movements in the United States and Europe sparked a revolution in cannabis breeding. Enthusiasts began crossbreeding landrace strains to create hybrids with desired traits. This led to the creation of the first generation of legendary hybrids like Skunk #1, Northern Lights, and Blueberry.

Creating new strains is both an art and a science. Breeders carefully select parent plants with the traits they’re looking for, like THC potency or unique terpene profiles, and cross-pollinate them to create new strains. This process can take many generations of plants, as growers refine again and again to perfect their new strain.

Pioneering seed banks

A seed bank is a company or group that collects, breeds, and sells cannabis seeds. Several prominent seed banks have pioneered weed genetics, shaping the industry as a whole. They’ve created some of the most well-known strains in the world, many of which have gone on to be the foundations for hundreds (or even thousands!) of modern cultivars.

Most of the world’s most influential seedbanks began in Amsterdam or the US.

Sensi Seeds

Founded in 1985 in Amsterdam, Sensi Seeds is one of the oldest and most respected seed banks. They are known for classic strains like Northern Lights, Jack Herer, and Super Skunk. They’ve been instrumental not only in cannabis breeding, but also in activism, helping pave the way for Amsterdam’s industry!

Green House Seed Co.

Another Amsterdam-based seed bank, and one of the most successful seed

banks in the world, Green House Seed Co. has gained international fame through their influential and bestselling strains like White Widow and Super Silver Haze.

DNA Genetics

Originating from California and now based in Amsterdam, DNA Genetics has been at the forefront of cannabis breeding since 2004. Their innovative modern strains, such as Tangie, LA Confidential, Kosher Kush, and Chocolope are known for their unique flavors.

Genotype and phenotype

When breeders cross two different strains, the resulting seeds contain a mix of genes from both parents, creating new hybrids with a blend of characteristics. But not all seeds will grow the same!

Genotyping refers to a plant’s genetics . It’s like looking at the blueprint of a cannabis plant through its DNA. This tells you what traits the plant could have, like its potential for THC content, resistance to disease, or flowering time.

Phenotyping is looking at the physical traits of a plant when it has grown. For example, we might have two cannabis seeds from the same plant, but grown in different conditions. While they’d have the same genotype, their environment—temperature, water level, sun level, soil conditions—will change how a plant grows. A purple-leaved pheno, for example, may only appear in cooler temperatures. Or, if you aren’t an experienced grower, a seed which may have ended up as a massive, resinous plant may actually grow to be a leggy and brittle one.

To make it simple, you can say that genotyping looks at a plant’s genetic potential, while phenotyping looks at what the plant actually became.

Pheno-hunting means to select specific cannabis plants and breed them for certain desired traits, like flavour or potency.

Putting it all together

Thanks to the incredible work of seed banks and modern Canadian growers, there’s no shortage of new strains with unique flavours and effects out there to try: from Spinach’s savoury GMO Cookies to Tribal’s lemony and gassy Cuban Linx. What type of strain is sold most?

Many consumers use indica, sativa, or hybrid as a proxy for the experience they want to get. We see more consumers buying dried flower indica strains for use at home. On-the-go formats like pre-rolls, edibles, or vapes often feature sativa strains.

Some new hybrid strains are making a splash, in a space normally dominated by indicas and sativas – like Fraser Valley’s White Fire OG.
