What cannabis formats do consumers want?

The three core categories, dried flower, pre-rolls, and vapes , make up the vast majority of cannabis sales. Within these three categories, their shares of sales may rise and fall for seasonal popularity, but they never lose their spots in the top three.

As the weather warms up and people want to get outside, pre-roll sales heat up too - even becoming the #1 category in some provinces!

We’re seeing a rise in gummies with rare cannabinoids like CBG, CBN, and CBC – like Spinach’s FEELZ line of dualflavoured soft chews.

What formats are selling the most?

This data shows the trends in cannabis formats over the last month. Different formats become more popular in different seasons, as weather changes where and how people smoke, but dried flower remains the most popular format month over month.

Pre-roll 10-packs are the bestselling size of pre-roll, but if you want to get the highest value for your dollar, you can get as much as 10 g and even 28 g worth of pre-rolls in a single pack!

As people are spending more time on-the-go during hotter months, we’re seeing a rise in all-in-one vapes.

A Canna Cabana Picnic

Edibles, recipe ideas, and beverages for your basket

Summer is here! It's time to soak up the sun, relax with friends, and enjoy the great outdoors. What better way to do it than with a picnic?

We’ve put together a few delicious ideas for your next basket, from easy-to-infuse foods to graband-go pre-made edibles that you can find at your local Canna Cabana.

Let’s get started!

Make your own infused snacks

Most cannabis-infused recipes you’ll find online use cannabutter, which requires its own long process

to make. But with the sun high in the sky and the breeze calling us, we’re skipping the extra prep time and opting for readyto-use cannabis oil that you can pick up in our stores.

Both THC and CBD-forward oils can be used in these picnic-friendly foods – try Redecan’s 30:0 Reign Drops for an infusion of THC, or Tweed’s Day CBD/CBG Oil for a THC-free experience!

Salad Dressing

A fresh, vibrant salad is a must-have for any summer picnic. Create a cannabisinfused vinaigrette by mixing your cannabis oil with olive oil, vinegar, lemon juice, and your favorite herbs. Drizzle it over your salad for a light, crisp dish with a THC twist.

Fruit Smoothies

Keep cool with a refreshing fruit smoothie, packed in a mason jar for easy carrying. Blend your choice of fruits with yogurt, ice, and a few drops of cannabis oil. Also try

vegan green smoothies, with ingredients like banana, spinach, peanut butter, and berries.

Guacamole & Chips

Not only is guac a time-tested crowd pleaser, it’s also easy to infuse. Simply add cannabis oil to your favourite guacamole recipe, or mix it into a store-bought container in a pinch. Serve it with a side of chips, and you’ve got a savory, infused snack that’s perfect for dipping. Don’t forget the salt and fresh lime!

Pie & Muffins

There’s no easier pastry to infuse than pie – when making your filling, simply add cannabis oil to your mixture and continue baking as usual. While many cannabis oils have little cannabis taste to begin with, the sweetness of your filling can help cover any remaining taste. Try a classic summer apple or peach pie, or grab some in-season rhubarb and combine it with strawberry for a pie that’s both sour and sweet.

Alternatively, muffins don’t use any utensils or plates, and can be easily plasticwrapped for a day at the park. Use any muffin recipe that includes oil, and you’re good to go – we love blueberry for that extra burst of tartness.

Ice Cream

Hot sun, meet ice cold. Try blending cannabis oil into your homemade ice cream before freezing—you can even use classic cannabis flavour notes like orange, berries, cherry, and coffee or chocolate! Pack with lots of ice and go somewhere nearby to prevent melting.

Keep it simple with premade beverages & edibles

While making your own infused food gives you more options, sometimes we want to skip the chopping, mixing, or baking. Smoke-free and discreet, pre-made edibles are also a great option in places where smoking is not allowed or is discouraged.

It’s also easier to control your THC intake with gummies and beverages, which have specific dosages per piece or can.

See these grab-and-go gummies and cannabis drinks, ready to pack.

Spinach FEELZ – THC+CBG

Pineapple Starfruit Gummies

From Spinach’s nationwide bestselling line of edibles, this tropical gummy duo features an added infusion of 5 mg of the rare cannabinoid CBG. All of Spinach’s gummies are blasted in sour crystals and are a fusion of two flavours in one: check out the rest of their FEELZ flavours, with Blueberry Pomegranate THC+CBN, Mango Lime THC+CBC, and Blue Raspberry Lemonade THC+THCV.

Wana QUICK – Rise & Shine

Clementine 1:1 Gummies

These sweet, juicy, and citrusy gummies are enhanced by a balance of THC and CBG. Made with a propriety sativa blend,

they also feature a unique innovation that can speed up onset time when compared with most edibles!

XMG+ – Tropical Cream Float

This twist on cream soda blends 10 mg each of THC and CBG with an infusion of guarana. Sweet and bubbly, it combines its classic cream profile with notes of mango, pineapple, and vanilla. This beverage is served straight up, right out of the can –useful if you don’t want to carry cups and ice.

RIFF – Wild Raspberry Lemonade

Sometimes you don’t feel like cleaning out the blender after making your own smoothies – grab an infused beverage instead! This bubbly, sweet and tart blend of raspberry and lemonade is made with real fruit juice, all natural flavour, and has little to no cannabis taste. Serve with ice, especially on the hottest days!

Nugz Munchies – Guava Jam Rosinaut Hash Rosin Gummies

For a full-spectrum option, this THCforward gummy is made with Nugz Guava Jam (Guavaz #62 x Guavaz #74) indica hash rosin. It’s bursting with strawberry guava flavour, coated in sugar, and is made in its own unique and funky shape.

Time to pack and go!

Make your grocery list, drop by your local Canna Cabana to pick up your oil at the lowest price guaranteed, and get outside! The best picnics are shared with friends, so you can split the work – one of you brings the salad, the other the dessert, and someone gets the easy job of grabbing the paper plates.

Happy picnicking, everyone!

What type of strain is sold most?

Many consumers use indica, sativa, or hybrid as a proxy for the experience they want to get. We see more consumers buying dried flower indica strains for use at home. On-the-go formats like pre-rolls, edibles, or vapes often feature sativa strains.

If you're looking for a classicstyle indica strain, check out Fraser Valley’s Donny Burger or Spinach’s GMO Cookies.

Edibles don’t only come in hybrid varieties – see indica or sativa-specific edibles from brands like Wyld or Wana QUICK .

Blend Hybrid Indica Sativa

How much do consumers pay for their cannabis?

The vast majority of Canadian consumers buy high to mid value priced cannabis, with craft and premium categories remaining more niche. However, many industry professionals and online communities prefer premium and craft categories!

Craft and small batch weed, centered around unique genetics, high terpenes, & freshness. Typically available at a higher price.

Brands: Simply Bare, Carmel, Blk Mkt, & more

Typically grown in larger batches to give you the biggest bang for your buck!

Brands: Hiway, Bake Sale, & more

What Flower sold the most this month?

Dried flower, the cured buds of the cannabis plant, is the most popular form of cannabis sold. Usually vaporized or smoked in bongs, pre-rolls, or pipes, dried flower offers the widest selection of strains, flavours, and experiences of any category. Dried flower is often chosen for its cost-effective nature and versatility.

If you want to sample as many flavours as possible, a variety pack is your best bet, like the 28 g, Four Flower Cultivar Pack from Cookies.

A few newcomers have been shooting up our lists: Fraser Valley’s Top Crop, Back Forty’s Liquid Imagination, and FIGR’s Jungle Fumes!

This month's top bulk dried flower

28g bags rule the dried flower category. For dried flower consistent factors drive longterm success: bag appeal, freshness, a variety of strain genetics, staying on weight, consistent quality, and price to THC ratio. These are the top-selling large format dried flower products (28g & 14g) over the last month.

What pre-roll brands sold the most this month?

Convenient and great for on-the-go use, pre-rolls are ready-made joints filled with ground cannabis flower. They’re a popular choice for those who want to skip the prep of bongs or pipes, try a new strain, or with occasional smokers. Over the last month, these brands have shown great success in the pre-roll category.

Jeeter and General Admission have been leading the charge on the growing 5x0.5 g infused pre-roll format.

This month’s bestselling pre-rolls

Pre-rolls come in a wide variety of sizes, flavours, and potencies. Larger-format packs of pre-rolls are increasing in popularity, such as cigarette-style, slimmer joint packs meant for quick hits on the go.

Infused-rolls combine the convenience and portability of regular pre-rolls with higher THC levels. They are usually infused with distillate, kief, or hash, but can also include live resin, shatter, or other concentrates. A newer category, infused pre-rolls are on the rise!

Bods – with their infused pre-rolls reaching heights of 50-60% THC

Which vape brands sold the best this month?

Made with concentrated cannabis such as distillate or live resin, vapes are mostly sold in 510-thread compatible cartridges. They’re popular for hassle-free or indoor cannabis consumption, as they require no prep and do not produce smoke. Vape carts are one of the most potent forms of cannabis, with THC levels normally reaching higher than 80%.

Brands like Debunk, Endgame and Zest have been putting out liquid diamond vapes with potencies as high as 95% , while still staying flavourful.

The selection of all-in-one vapes has almost doubled in the last year, with new offerings from brands like Back Forty, Litti, and Endgame.

This month’s bestselling distillate vapes

Made with THC concentrate and often paired with botanical terpenes or other flavouring, distillate vapes make up the majority of vape cart sales. They are available in countless flavours, from simple fruits like strawberry or orange, to more complex blends like lychee bubble tea or café mocha. Sticky Greens has a wide

How a Cannabis Plant Grows

From seed to smoke

It’s easy to pack a bowl, and takes a little work to roll the perfect joint – but growing perfect weed is a new challenge altogether.

We’re looking at the growth stages of the cannabis plant, and what it takes to bring you the expertly raised, picked, and cured buds that you’re familiar with in our stores. From seed to smoke, it’s a long process that has a lot more involved than you might think.

Let’s show some appreciation to our hardworking growers!

The stages of a cannabis plant

While different strains have different growing times and characteristics, they all share the same growth stages:

1. Germination (3 to 10 days)

2. Seedling (2 to 3 weeks)

3. Vegetative (3 to 16 weeks)

4. Pre-flowering (1 to 2 weeks)

5. Flowering (8 to 11 weeks)

6. Harvest

Germination

Germination involves the sprouting of a seedling into a small plant. The seeds must be planted in rich, moist soil and kept warm and humid. The seeds will then grow roots and stems, eventually turning into a small plant.

The germination stage sets the foundation for the plant's development and overall

growth. The plant may only grow to its full potential if germination is done correctly.

Seedling

The seedling stage begins when the cannabis seed germinates and sprouts from the soil. As the plant grows, it turns from a sprout to a seedling and develops more leaves with blades, also called “fingers.”

At this stage, the plant is very fragile and requires a lot of care and attention. It is also when the plant is the most vulnerable to disease and mold. The first few days of growth are crucial, and the plant needs to be kept warm, moist but well-drained, and in a nutrient-rich environment. It is also essential to ensure the plant gets enough light, as this will help it grow strong and healthy.

In the early days of the seedling stage, the plant will focus most of its energy on developing its root system. The plant only absorbs water and nutrients through its roots at this stage – but can’t absorb that

much yet. Delicately watering and using mild nutrient solutions keep this sensitive balance.

Vegetative

Now the plant is really growing! Seedlings are re-potted to give them more room, and often, weak seedlings are weeded out. At the beginning of the vegetative stage, the plant will have two to three leaves. They will grow seven or more leaves by the end of the stage, and will typically double in size.

The vegetative stage is the best time to train a cannabis plant . Careful plant training is used to manipulate the plant's growth and productivity. Some popular training methods include topping, pruning, and LST (low-stress training). Because the plant is growing so fast, they need frequent care and check-ups to make sure everything is going smoothly. In larger scale growing, this means

hardworking staff working constantly! A lack of nutrients, overwatering, or underwatering can stunt the plant's growth during this stage.

Plant training is when a cannabis plant is physically altered (by trimming, topping, or other methods) to make it grow more bud sites, increasing yields!

Pre-Flowering

Depending on the strain and growing conditions, the pre-flowering stage can begin a month or two—or even four!— after the seedling sprouts.

During this time, the plant is still growing and developing, but it has not yet started to produce flowers. Instead, it’s focused on building a strong root system, developing

sturdy stems and leaves, and preparing itself for the upcoming flowering phase.

This time is crucial, especially if there’s a chance there are male plants in the crop. As plants reach sexual maturity, they also develop reproductive organs. A male cannabis plant will be growing pollen sacs, while the female plant will have pistils. Male plants are removed as soon as they’re spotted, as they can fertilize the female plants and ruin the quality of the produced cannabis!

Most often growers use feminized seeds, which are specially bred so that they will almost always produce female plants.

Flowering

This is the moment we’ve all been waiting for! The plants are starting to sprout flowers from the pistils. The humidity is often lowered to prevent fungal diseases and rot, and growers are on the lookout for pests, who are attracted to the plants.

The first sign of flowering is when the cannabis plant shows the preflowers or pistils at the joints where the leaves and branches connect to the primary stem. The plant's growth slows down, and the focus is now on producing flowers, also known as the buds we all know and love. As the flowering stage progresses, the buds develop a sticky resin containing cannabinoids, terpenes , and other essential oils. The trichomes , tiny, hair-like structures that cover the buds, are now visible to the naked eye.

The trichomes’ color can provide growers with an idea of when to harvest their plants. Clear trichomes indicate that the plant needs more time to mature, while cloudy or amber-colored trichomes suggest the plant is ready for harvesting.

Harvest

It’s time for the fun part! Growers look for many signs that a plant is ready to harvest. A few easy indicators are the pistils and trichomes. If the pistils have turned from white to a darker colour, and the trichomes have turned milky white or amber, the buds are ready. Timing the harvest is essential – wait too long, and this can result in a loss of potency and a harsher smoke.

Plants are carefully hand-trimmed to keep the buds intact and avoid damaging them, preserving trichomes and flavours. The harvested buds are then dried in humidity-controlled environments . The buds are best dried very slowly and under low temperatures, taking up to ten days. Once they’ve been properly dried, they’re cured for over a month in air-tight containers, often glass, to help preserve them and enhance their flavour.

Once curing is finished, the buds are ready to smoke, ending their long journey of meticulous care and attention.

Try top-tier growing with craft cannabis

The process of growing, harvesting, drying, and curing has a lot more than we can cover here – from precise temperatures to soil types to light conditions, growers have spent decades perfecting their art.

Want to try some of the best-grown weed in Canada? Check out craft cannabis from brands like Simply Bare, who grow their weed organically in living soil, or Roilty’s Reserve line like their Grape Galena, grown by some of the best craft microgrowers in the country. 1964 produces craft flower with unique genetics like their Organic Comatose, a bestseller at Canna Cabana.

Ask your budtender for even more craft flower at UNBEATABLE prices!

What concentrate brands did consumers buy this month?

Normally consumed in dab rigs or vaporizers, concentrates are a highly potent form of cannabis, with THC levels far above dried flower. The most potent forms of concentrates include those like wax, shatter, THCa powder, or oils. Less potent forms include kief or hash, which are often paired with dried flower in bongs and joints.

If you prefer solventless extracts, Astrolab is one of the bestselling brands in live rosin around.

This month’s bestselling dabbable concentrates

As consumers who use concentrates most often do so for their higher potency, the price-to-THC ratio remains important here. The bestselling concentrate brands have a variety of specific strain genetics, consistent quality, and offer several formats. The types of concentrates explored here are dabbable concentrates such as shatter, live resin, diamonds, and badder.

This month’s bestselling hash products

Popular with legacy cannabis consumers, hash is a concentrate made with compressed trichomes. Typically not as potent as shatter, hash is most often added to bong bowls, rolled into joints, or used in cooking.

Who are the most successful edible brands right now?

Most popularly sold as gummies and chocolates, edibles provide a discreet, no-prep experience. With all edibles made with a maximum of 10mg THC, successful brands in this category produce delicious, cost-effective edibles in a wide range of flavours.

Monjour has been leading in non-THC large format gummies, alongside brands like Wyld and Pearls by Grön .

This month’s bestselling edibles

Edibles are a very popular category as a smoke-free option of cannabis, as they don’t involve inhalation and have easy to control doses. While soft chews have always been the most popular, recent innovations in edibles are showing slowly rising sales in cookies, hard candies, and chocolate.

M*ry Jones is a relative newcomer to the beverage game, bringing us classic flavours like Grape Ape.

Cannabis oils and capsules are commonly used for their predictability. In this format, it’s easy to choose an exact dosage of THC or other cannabinoids, most often CBD. They’re also favoured with those looking for a smoke-free, prep-free, and discreet alternative. Cannabis oils are also often used for infused baking.

MediPharm’s specialty is oils and capsules with consistent, precise doses, helping you moderate your experience.

This month’s bestselling oils & capsules

Oils and capsules represent a smaller customer base than formats like flower or edibles. They are most often chosen for their dosage, ease of use, and price, rather than flavour profile or strain genetics.
