It’s our favourite time of year: 420 month is almost here! From small gatherings with friends to a chill solo evening with movies to huge public events, we all have different traditions for how to mark this weedy-great day.

With growing acceptance around the globe, cannabis and 420 events are popping up left and right. Let’s take a look at some of the events that celebrate cannabis—not just on 420, but all year, all over the world.

Where does “420” come from?

While there are a few explanations for the origin of 420, the most popular one is a little story about five friends in 1971 from San Rafael, California (Sound familiar? This is also the origin of San Rafael ’71’s name!). They’d heard of an abandoned patch of cannabis, and hoping to find the plants themselves,

they met once a week to search. Their codeword for meeting up was also their meeting time: 4:20pm!

Eventually, the hunt for the mythical weed ended, but their codeword lived on—and an icon was born.

Nowadays, 420 is used to represent anything to do with cannabis, from legalization activism to weed memes to massive cannabis expos!

Celebrations, Expos, & Cannabis Events in 2024

CannExpo (Toronto, Canada)

Since legalization, we’ve seen so many cannabis events growing across Canada, from KIND Magazine’s Winter and Summer Fairs , to Montreal Cannabis Expo, Hall of Flowers , and GrowUp Alberta. Hosted in Toronto, CannExpo is just one of the many industry events that showcase our country’s growers and retailers, and that give budtenders a space to connect with each other.

2024’s CannExpo begins March 22nd.

The National Cannabis Festival (Washington, DC)

This massive outdoor festival began in 2016, and has grown every year since. The National Cannabis Festival features music acts, an exhibitor’s fair, munchies zone, a cannabis championship, and even celebrates the important work of cannabis activists. Around 25,000 people attend this event every year.

This year’s festival takes place on 420 itself, April 19 & 20!

Hanfparade (Berlin, Germany)

Held annually in Berlin since 1997, Hanfparade is the largest march for cannabis legalization in Germany. It advocates both for recreational use and for public education surrounding cannabis,

with the goal of one day achieving full legalization.

Some high points of the Hanfparade include a parade march, a stage for politicians and activists to open conversations around cannabis, and live music. Last year, more than 8000 people attended the parade!

The next Hanfparade is August 10th.

The Cannabis Cup (USA & Amsterdam, Netherlands)

Originally held in Amsterdam, the High Times Cannabis Cup is the best-known cannabis competition in the world. Since 1988 , High Times's cup has evolved with the industry, starting as small underground gatherings to now massive events featuring celebrity judges and panels of cannabis experts.

Now no longer just an annual event, High Times holds competitions all year round in different locations across the US.

Spannabis (Barcelona, Spain)

Known as the largest cannabis event in the world, Spannabis features over 250 exhibitors, thousands of industry professionals, live performances, and hosts powerhouse speakers from across the globe. They also hold their own Spannabis Champion’s Cup!

2024’s Spannabis took place on the 15th of March, and will have another event on September 20th in Bilbao.

ExpoCannabis (Montevideo, Uruguay)

As one of a handful of countries in the world with legal cannabis, Uruguay’s ExpoCannabis is not only a place for advocating for the future, but for celebrating how far they’ve come. This massive outdoor event hosts circus acts and live music, cannabis exhibits and competitions, panels, and more.

The 10th ExpoCannabis was hosted in December 2023, with the next dates still to be announced.

Expoweed (Mexico City, Mexico)

One of the largest and most important events in Latin America, Expoweed plays an important role in Mexico’s push for legalization. It’s a space for conversations around their budding legal industry, for showcasing new brands, and showing the country what the plant can do. Last year’s Expoweed hosted music, tournaments, and even a skateboarding competition!

The next ExpoWeed is being held just after 420 on April 27th.

But that’s not all

These are just a few of the thousands of events around the world surrounding cannabis. Industry events around hemp are growing in Asia, such as Thailand’s Asia International Hemp Expo, and legal industry events are on the rise in Australia, with their A Cannabis Conference & Exhibition held earlier in March, and their annual HHI Expo.

Events like these will help shape policy, acceptance, and cannabis culture around the world—here’s to the new heights they’ll take us to!

What type of strain is sold most?

Many consumers use indica, sativa, or hybrid as a proxy for the experience they want to get. We see more consumers buying dried flower indica strains for use at home. On-the-go formats like pre-rolls, edibles, or vapes often feature sativa strains.

Hybrid strains can often be overlooked, as many people look specifically for indica or sativa varieties, but new potent strains like Baked Animal are coming in hot.

What Flower sold the most this month?

Dried flower, the cured buds of the cannabis plant, is the most popular form of cannabis sold. Which vape brands were most popular this month?

Made with concentrated cannabis such as distillate or live resin, vapes are mostly sold in 510-thread compatible cartridges. They’re popular for hassle-free or indoor cannabis consumption, as they require no prep and do not produce smoke. Vape carts are one of the most potent forms of cannabis, with THC levels normally reaching higher than 80%.

A Quick Guide to Hash

The classic cannabis concentrate

When we say this is a classic, we mean it: hash is most likely the oldest cannabis concentrate in the world. It’s made from compressing the trichomes, or the resin glands, of cannabis plants.

Trichomes house the cannabinoids of the cannabis plant, like THC and CBD, as well as the terpenes , the compounds responsible for its iconic taste and smell. Because hash contains a higher concentration of these than the average cannabis flower, it has a stronger flavour and effect—but hash is actually less potent than other concentrates like shatter or diamonds.

Where does hash come from?

One of the earliest references to a form of hash is charas, made in the Indian subcontinent for thousands of years.

The term “hash” comes from the evolution of the term “hashish” over many centuries. The first

mentions of hashish go as far back as 1123 in Cairo. Before about the 1500s, hash was actually consumed as an edible substance. It was (and still is!) used for recreational and spiritual purposes.

It was only later that people began smoking hash, around the time that tobacco was introduced. From there, hash spread: it reached Europe around the 18th century, and in modern times, hash is produced all over the world, from Morocco to Afghanistan to Canada.

How is hash used?

Similar to flower, hash can be smoked in a bowl, pipe, or joint. It can be vaporized as well, if the vaporizer is hash-friendly. Smoking hash is the most common method of consuming it. Hash can be smoked on its own, but is often mixed with dried flower!

In a bong or pipe

Grind up some bud, pack your piece, and simply toss some hash on top of the bud. If you’re smoking hash by itself, add a titanium or glass screen to your bowl and rest your hash on top to prevent the hash from falling through and gunking up your piece.

In a joint

Add your desired amount of bud into your rolling paper, and crush some hash on top of it. Hash burns best when it’s cocooned by bud, so add another layer of bud on top to ensure a smooth smoke.

In a vaporizer

Hash needs higher temps to activate it, so make sure your vape is hash friendly. Many people use the “sandwich” method, where you add a little weed to the chamber, put some hash atop that, and top it off with a bit more weed to help prevent the hash from clogging the vape.

In the kitchen

Hash can be added to your favourite dish. Decarboxylate your hash by baking it at low temperatures, then infuse it into a fatty carrier, like butter or oil. Add this mixture to your recipe, like low-temp bakes such as the classic hash brownie.

How is hash made?

Anyone can make hash with some trichome-heavy cannabis and a little bit of know-how. Making hash includes removing the trichomes from the plant and compressing them into your desired shape, such as a brick or ball. The method used depends on the type of hash you’re looking for!

Bubble Hash

Also known as “ice water hash,” bubble hash is made by submerging cannabis in ice water, and then agitating it, releasing the trichomes. It is then strained over and over until it becomes the desired texture, from malleable and sticky to sandy and granular.

Dry Sift Hash

This type is created by sieving dried cannabis through screens of various sizes.

The process results in a fine, powdery hash that is often pressed into cakes or slabs.

Afghani Hash

This is a form of dry sift hash that is often made with earthy and spicy cannabis. Afghani hash is known for being pressed by hand in traditional methods , with the addition of a small amount of water or even aromatic tea, and commonly is rolled into a ball shape. It’s recognizable from its dark colour and smooth texture.
