Mr. Barrett is a graduate of the Yale School of Architecture and has won a number of architectural awards for his work. The architectural style of the Quail Way residence is derived from the English Arts and Craft tradition of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Specifically, Mr. Barrett frequently called upon the English country house idiom established by one of Britain’s most famous architects, Sir Edwin Lutyens (1869-1944). Edwin Lutyens was know for imaginatively adapting traditional architectural style to a more modern era. Mr. Barrett self-limits his practice to one major architectural project at a time. As described in the Carmel Pine Cone article in 2003, his peers have honored Mr. Barrett with awards for design excellence on more than one occasion. Specifically, the coveted Honor Award in the American Institute of Architects Monterey Bay Chapter 2002 design competition. The award “is given to a project that has special distinction worthy of particular notice and hope for emulation by other architects”, then-chapter president Phil Korchek told the Pine Cone. Barrett was also quoted in the same article: English architect Sir Edward Lutyens did these large country houses that were known for their warmth as well as their presence”. “Architecture is more than keeping rain off someone’s head or trying to project impressions that are merely superficial,” he commented, “Good architecture nourishes the spirit of all who come in contact with it.”
