Over Easy and Egg - The story of a Carmel compound

Over Easy and Egg

Over Easy started as a one bedroom cottage located in the middle of the current driveway. This room, now the den, was the living room with the original fireplace.

The Living Room: Light and bright.

The art wall was the inspiration of architect Ray Parks. The exterior wall of glass doors and windows gives light to the kitchen and dining area and beyond, and provides ocean views across the deck.

Bill Eggleston first purchased “Egg” (Guadalupe 4SE of 5th) in 1981. He subsequently purchased the house next door, a 2-lot parcel, at Guadalupe 5SW of 5th, now known as “Over Easy” from John Francis. Originally, “Egg” and “Over Easy” were too close to each other to allow for a driveway (there was not even a driveway to the garage at the back of “Egg”), so “Over Easy” was lifted and rolled about 8 feet south, placed on a new foundation, and the present driveway was added. “Over Easy” was deemed historic in the late 1990’s. The City of Carmel-bythe-Sea approved the design and lot layout. Ray Parks was the architect, Dave Kettle the builder and John Wheatman was the interior designer. John Wheatman suggested removing the wall of the third bedroom (now the office) and putting in a barn door thereby opening up the living space and providing a view as soon as you enter the front door. He also added the full wall pantry in the kitchen. Kim Gates designed the landscapes and Jerry Gates currently trims the trees.

“Egg” - Purchased in 1981 by Bill Eggleston

In June 1981, Bill bought “Egg” on his first day in Carmel. Looking through the window of the front door, he saw a wonderful view of the ocean and made an offer.

A very private front patio.

The original house was a flat-roofed, two bedroom 700 sf cottage.

About 1988, a second floor was added with the open staircase and views from a deck. The architect was Joe Rock.

In 2016, the kitchen was expanded which opened up the first floor and the entire house was upgraded. The architect was Ray Parks and Dave Kettle was the builder.

The second floor deck was expanded with the upgrade which allowed for an entertainment area overlooking the ocean.
