Freshers’ Fayre takes place during your first week at CCCU, and you can sign up for a variety of societies and sports clubs – making sure you get the most out of your time here.

St George’s Student Centre is right in the city centre, and its Lounge Bar & Kitchen is an ideal venue for music, performance and socialising. The newly refurbished Students’ Union is situated at the heart of the Canterbury Campus, with pop-up SU activity also taking place at our Medway Campus.

CANTERBURY CAMPUS

Canterbury is just 50 miles south-east of London, less than an hour by train from St Pancras. It’s a historic cathedral city, a World Heritage Site and one of the UK’s ‘must-see’ cities. Our Canterbury Campus is right in the centre of town, with shops, cafés, clubs and bars all within walking distance.

Canterbury hosts cultural events and exhibitions year-round at the Marlowe Theatre, Canterbury Cathedral, and Canterbury’s museums.

Canterbury is surrounded by beautiful countryside, picturesque villages, stunning coastal scenery and cosmopolitan city life. A short bus-ride away are the seaside towns of Whitstable and Margate – recently voted ‘the coolest neighbourhood in the country’ by Time Out magazine.

MEDWAY CAMPUS

The Medway Campus is close to the historic naval town of Chatham and to Rochester with its beautiful cathedral and buzzing high street.

Medway has vibrant festivals throughout the year and incredible museums including the Chatham Historic Dockyard (where Call the Midwife is filmed!). The campus itself is in Chatham Maritime, a student-friendly quarter with a multiplex cinema, a shopping centre and a fully equipped sports centre. London is under an hour away by train.

At CCCU, we’ll also help you develop the skills, confidence and attributes valued by employers.

Scientists, engineers, medical and forensics students study in our new £65 million facility, the Verena Holmes Building, working together on real-world projects with researchers and employers in dedicated makerspaces and labs.

SUPPORT WITH ENGLISH LANGUAGE

If English isn’t your first language, the Academic English Language Team, as part of the Centre for Language and Linguistics, is available to offer guidance. You can meet a tutor, attend workshops on specific areas of difficulty in academic English, and access online modules in academic writing, reading and other essential skills through the Learning Skills Hub.

Learning a new language is a great way to enhance your career prospects and help you when studying or working abroad. We offer modules at different levels in French, German, Italian, Spanish and Mandarin, all of which can be taken at the Canterbury Campus alongside your other studies.

CANTERBURY. OUR CAMPUSES

Students can step out into a vibrant and world-famous cathedral city and also benefit from a campus with excellent learning and teaching resources, music venues, a superb sports centre, a wellstocked bookshop and plenty of coffee bars and places to eat.

At the heart of our main campus is the Verena Holmes Building, a major hightech facility for STEM subjects and our Medical School. Our Daphne Oram creative arts building is dedicated to 21st century creativity and digital innovation, and has become a hub for arts and culture in the city with a vibrant, year-round programme of concerts, exhibitions and events. Next to the city walls is Augustine House, home to our library and student services.

In addition to these modern, state-ofthe-art buildings, our dynamic Canterbury Campus includes a priory, a historic prison and courthouse, our original 1962 chapel and a 19th century church building. We’re very proud of our facilities but do come and see them for yourself at one of our Open Days (see page 2).

MEDWAY. OUR CAMPUSES

Our Medway Campus has a unique atmosphere, with its long-standing reputation for excellence in Early Years, Health and Social Care and Education.

The campus is part of Universities at Medway, which is made up of three universities (CCCU, the University of Kent and the University of Greenwich) so you’ll be part of a vibrant student campus with plenty of facilities. A busy programme of social and sporting events is organised by the Students’ Unions, while the Drill Hall Library contains extensive collections of books and journals, hundreds of PCs and study places, training rooms and discussion spaces.

As a Health and Social Care student, you’ll be learning in our realworld Simulation Suite, designed to teach and enhance clinical skills. HOME FROM HOME.

Make friends and live independently in the heart of the city.

All accommodation is self-catering, and there are campus cafés and local restaurants for those times when you want someone else to do the cooking for you!

With a choice of en suite or shared facilities, your university home will feature 24-hour security, internet access and free contents insurance. Utility bills are included in the rent. We have photos and 360º views of some of our rooms, including adapted rooms, on our website.

All of our student accommodation is allocated on a first-come, first-served basis, so if you have a particular preference, apply as soon as you can.

If you’re a first year undergraduate or foundation student and have firmly accepted an offer of a place on one of our courses, your accommodation is guaranteed as long as you apply by 31 July 2024.

CITY LIVING.

CANTERBURY

In Canterbury, student residences have study bedrooms grouped into either houses or flats. Many are en suite, and we also have a limited number of studio and one-bedroom flats designed for single/shared occupation. Many have communal living and dining areas, and some have beautifully landscaped courtyards.

Security Officers are on hand at our larger sites 24 hours a day, or just a phone call away at smaller sites.

RENTING PRIVATELY

You are able to apply to stay in university-approved accommodation for the entire length of your course, but if you decide to move into private accommodation for the second and third years, our Accommodation Team can show you the available options.

MEDWAY

If you’re studying at our Medway Campus, you’ll have the chance to rent a room in one of the purpose-built flats in the Pier Quays development, which is owned and managed by a private provider. Grouped into modern flats for six or eight students, they feature shared communal lounges and fully equipped kitchens.

GET INVOLVED.

Get involved with other students, staff and the Students’ Union through our year-round Us in the World programme of events. Our Student Green Office actively promotes socially and environmentally responsible living at university. Look out for their events, opportunities and pop-up activities hosted on campus (one of our favourites is the Fairtrade chocolate tasting!) and sign up for free certified Carbon Literacy Training so you can arm yourself with the knowledge and skills you need to make a difference.

There are lots of outlets across campus that sell healthy, veggie/vegan and Fairtrade options including – yes! – vegan sausage rolls, and we have our very own weekly veg box scheme bringing affordable, organic, seasonal vegetables right onto campus for you, direct from a local farm.

SPORT, HEALTH AND FITNESS.

Sport

Whether you’re serious about training and competing or would simply like to get a little fitter, you’ll have access to our multi-million pound Sports Centre with a state-of-the-art gym, a full range of fitness classes, interactive spin studio, climbing wall and a personal training service.

We provide many free programmes centred around student wellbeing to help you stay active and healthy.

You’ll also have access to Polo Farm Sports Club, a short distance from the Canterbury Campus, with facilities including three floodlit hockey pitches, an indoor tennis centre, outdoor tennis courts and a spacious sports hall specialising in netball, hockey and cricket.

There are five grass sports pitches for football and rugby, and in partnership with local clubs we offer golf, kayaking, equestrian, trampoline and athletics facilities.

We work with various national governing bodies of sport to offer sport-specific coaching and officiating courses, giving you the skills and academic knowledge to coach or referee – great for enhancing your career prospects.

LEARN TO COACH

SPORT SCHOLARSHIPS

If you’re talented at sport, you can apply for a CCCU Sport scholarship.

As a Sport Scholar, you’ll enjoy a financial bursary, University gym membership, personal training, mentoring and sports science support. As a TASS Dual Career accredited site, we support our scholars in balancing their studies alongside their sport.

Sport scholarships are available in a range of sports, including disability sport.

FOOTBALL PERFORMANCE ACADEMY

Play football alongside your studies through one of three diverse sport-based degrees (see page 82).

Train at an intensive level while we support you to succeed as both an athlete and a student, with access to regular football training, expert strength and conditioning, a fixtures programme, performance analysis and much more.

FOUNDATION YEARS

If you don’t have the grades you need, or are returning to study, we have a number of four year degree courses with the first year (Year 0) as a foundation year which introduces you to university study in your chosen subject area.

FOUNDATION DEGREES

We offer a number of these qualifications which combine academic study and workbased learning. They usually involve two years’ full-time study but part-time options may be available. You can study for an additional year to ‘top up’ to honours degree level.

PROFESSIONAL PLACEMENTS

While you are with us we want to help you develop the skills you need to get a great job when you graduate. So, many of our courses give you the chance to gain work experience or undertake a professional placement year.

WHY STUDY A COMBINED HONOURS DEGREE?

A combined honours degree is one degree covering two subject areas.

It will allow you to:

n explore two subjects you enjoy and gain a wider set of knowledge and skills

n tailor your degree to suit your own personal preferences, giving you greater choice of what you study

n meet an even wider range of students to work with and make friends.

MAXIMISE YOUR EMPLOYABILITY

With an ever-changing work environment, employers are looking for those who can demonstrate adaptability and diverse knowledge and skills. Specialising in two subject areas provides you with the opportunity to distinguish yourself in an increasingly competitive job market as a graduate who is flexible, adaptable, possesses excellent interpersonal, organisational and problem-solving skills, can undertake independent research from more than one discipline and has the ability to work as part of a team.

WHAT MAKES A COMBINED HONOURS DEGREE?

With a combined honours degree, in your first year you will spend half your time studying one subject and half the other. As you progress into your second and third years, you may decide that you prefer one subject to another and you will be able to study one subject for two thirds of the time and the other for one third.

A number of our degrees are offered with an additional foundation year providing an ideal route for those who have the ability to study at degree level but don’t have the entry requirements for their chosen subject.

A foundation year is the first year of a four year degree which:

INTERNATIONAL FOUNDATION YEAR

The International foundation year will enable you to improve your English language, study skills and academic content knowledge in English to the level necessary to take an undergraduate degree. You will study a combination of language-focused classes alongside subject-based courses relating to the BA/BSc course you intend to study. As well as improving your language skills, you will develop key academic study skills for research, assignment writing and oral presentation. We also provide individual help with your studies through regular tutorials.

Once you have successfully completed the International foundation year, you’ll progress onto a place on the first year of your chosen undergraduate degree course at CCCU.

THE PERSONAL STATEMENT

Try to include a wide-ranging description of yourself that includes:

n your study interests – what you enjoy about your current course(s)

n why you have chosen the subject(s) you are applying for

n work or other relevant experience you have. With teaching or health-related subjects, relevant experience in either a voluntary or paid capacity is highly recommended as part of your application

n any career ideas you have for the future, and how your chosen course will fit into this n interests outside school/college, tell us about them and how they’ve helped you.

THE REFERENCE

You will need to provide an academic reference and your school or college will write a reference for you. If you are not currently studying we may accept professional references.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

All students must meet our general minimum entrance requirements before they register. These are published on our website at canterbury.ac.uk/study-here/applying/ entry-requirements

Please check individual course entries on our website for specific requirements, including whether specific subjects are required, GCSE requirements and offer grades.

DEGREES WITH A FOUNDATION YEAR

Most of our courses offer a foundation year for students who need extra support before they start their degree. This is for people who may not have studied the right subjects at Level 3, or for those who may not have the grades needed for entry onto the degree.

DIRECT ADMISSION TO YEAR 2 OR 3 (LEVEL 5 OR 6)

We will consider applicants for direct entry for most of our courses. Please apply through UCAS. We will need a copy of your relevant transcripts.

RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING (RPL) OR RECOGNITION OF PRIOR EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING (RPEL)

You may be able to demonstrate learning which has occurred in the past by way of certification or experience.

You will need to provide appropriate documentation, including transcripts. This process may enable you to build directly onto your existing learning if you are choosing a course of study within the same discipline.

INTERVIEWS

Some courses require interviews. These include Professional Health Courses and Primary Education.

FUNDING YOUR DEGREE

The Government offers loans to cover your tuition fees and assist with your living expenses while you are studying.

Tuition Fee Loans are available to most students who meet the relevant eligibility criteria for full-time and part-time higher education courses, except those who already have a higher education qualification. Your funding eligibility may also be affected if you have previously studied at a UK or overseas university. Students studying nursing, midwifery and most allied health professional (AHP) subjects as a second degree are also able to obtain student loans. Students in England on nursing, midwifery and most AHP undergraduate pre-registration courses will have access to the standard student support package of tuition fee loans and support for living costs. MAINTENANCE LOAN

This is to help you with the day-to-day costs of going to university (a place to live, food, travel and course materials, for example). The amount you can borrow depends on where you live and study and your household income. You can apply for your Maintenance Loan when you apply for your Tuition Fee Loan.
