Canterbury School of Florida is an independent co-educational, college preparatory day school founded in 1968. Canterbury’s learning community emphasizes academic enrichment as well as character development. We encourage our students to cultivate their curiosity, explore their interests, realize their potential and develop their self-confidence. Situated on two campuses minutes apart in northeast St. Petersburg: Hough Campus for Pre-K3 through grade 4 and Knowlton Campus for grades 5 through 12, Canterbury provides its students with a well-rounded educational experience, which promotes lifelong learning.
SENIOR CAPSTONE WRITING PROJECT Believing that every student should develop writing and research skills regardless of their intended career path, Canterbury requires that each student complete a Capstone Writing Seminar course. During, Senior Capstone each senior writes a persuasive research paper which culminates in an interactive multimedia presentation to faculty. Students meet with advisors, generate significant research, develop strong writing skills, and prepare an informative speech for a faculty presentation. CANTERBURY ADVANCED SCIENCE PROGRAM IN APPLIED RESEARCH (CASPAR) CASPAR is a two-year program for self-driven and exceptional students eager to pursue science, medicine or engineering in their future. The program develops skills specific to student’s interests, emphasizing laboratory protocols, research methodology, scientific journalism literacy and field skills. Students may pursue the CASPAR program during sophomore or junior year.
SIGNATURE PROGRAMS Marine Studies Canterbury’s Marine Studies program is a school-wide curriculum for students in PK3 – Grade 12 focusing on all aspects of marine science and environmental education. Students learn in our Cousteau Center for Marine Studies (CCMS), a 2,800 square foot stand-alone building on the Knowlton Campus dedicated to marine studies. This state-of-the-art learning laboratory engages students with three touch tanks, three outdoor tilapia tanks, a kayak fleet and more. Our program flourishes due to our ideal location. Students have direct access to Tampa Bay’s estuary with a living laboratory to explore. They also have unique access to a host of environmental and scientific institutions, such as an oceanography class with research opportunities with the University of South Florida and the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration. Students also have an opportunity for research in the Bahamas and lionfish research in Honduras. Canterbury’s Marine Studies program also includes a community service component. LEADS (LEADERSHIP • ETHICS • ADVOCACY • DIGNITY • SERVICE) The Canterbury LEADS program is designed to promote character development and leadership skills while instilling an understanding of the critical role services must play in the life of a responsible global citizen. Students establish key relationships with people and organizations in the community, which encourages their independence and growth while leaving a direct and sustaining impact on the community. Through LEADS, students zero in on the real-world topics to which they feel most connected and in doing so foster skills and competencies that can apply practically to their lives beyond Canterbury.
