History: ❖ Unique form of tile. ❖ Blend of different colors of clay. ❖ Tiles patterns are made of inlaid tiles. ❖ Color may wear off but design never changes.


The Birth of Encaustic Tile: The Medieval Era ❖ Samples were found in Medieval palaces and monasteries. ❖ Structures were built with ornate designs to honour god and kings. ❖ Potters and merchants are used to travel far and wide to acquire the best clay. ❖ Production of tiles mainly took place in 12th to 16th century. ❖ Process of creation was very sophisticated. ❖ Lead ore was used to sprinkled over the tile in the form of thin gaze. ❖ The pattern on the tile was completely handmad


Encaustic Tile Revival: ❖ In mid 1800 excavation took place and Encaustic tile fascinated people so much that everyone wanted to incorporate the designs into their residences. ❖ Business opportunity was created for many. ❖ In 1828, The first to experiment with encaustic tile was Herbert Minton. ❖ In 1835, a catalog was debuted that showcased new encaustic tile designs, inspired by their medieval predecessors.


❖ The biggest customers were churches and other religious establishments. ❖ Queen Victoria and Prince Albert laid foundation for the pavement for the Osbourne House. ❖ In 1863, Potter William Boulton discovered a new method of creating encaustic tiles using dust clay. ❖ Pegs were used to guide the mold and the hollows in the mold were filled up with dust clay.
