Manufacturing Industry Sector | PARTNERSHIP UPDATE The Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce currently administers the newly formed Stark County Manufacturing Workforce Development Partnership (SCMWDP). This 501(c)3 is one of eighteen manufacturing industry sector partnerships endorsed by the Ohio Manufacturing Association. The SCMWDP is currently comprised of 40+ manufacturing employers and other partner organizations consisting of nonprofit, government, and educational institutions. MAGNET and the Stark Economic Development Board serve as intermediaries along with the Canton Regional Chamber to promote collaboration among the vested stakeholders. As reported earlier this year the SCMWDP was awarded significant grants from the state, the Stark County Port Authority and from the Ohio Manufacturers Association. These grants fund 37 initiatives that relate to promoting manufacturing as a viable career pathway and filling manufacturing job vacancies with our Stark County
employers. That being said, here is a status update on some of the initiatives since the beginning of the year: •
The National Center for Urban Solutions was hired by the SCMWDP to conduct grass roots outreach to underrepresented populations to recruit, vet, train, refer and provide follow up services for new candidates entering manufacturing career pathways. 30 have been placed since March.
•
A promotions flier and QR code for Stark County manufacturing job listings was transmitted to all graduating seniors in Stark County
•
A TechCred and Handshake informational zoom meeting was conducted with Stark State College and Walsh University
•
A tour of 4 manufacturing plants for 11 non-profit career navigators was conducted
4065 Fulton Dr NW, Canton 330.498.4400 putmanproperties.com
•
A tour of 4 manufacturing plants for 31 high school and middle school educators representing 12 school districts was conducted
•
A Stark Maker’s camp for 20 middle school students was launched with TomTod Ideas at Stark State. Senator Sherod Brown’s office provided graduation certificates and inclusion with press releases (PS - the kids had a BALL discovering career pathways in manufacturing!)
•
Planning has been initiated for a “Manufacturing Day” for middle and high school students in October

Six Reasons Small Business Owners Have Cause to Celebrate Small business owners, especially those just starting out, may look at big businesses with envy, wishing they had half of the resources of their larger competitors. But, small businesses need to remember that they still have major benefits at their disposal as compared to the larger players in their industry.
bring customers even greater value through a joint offering. This often leads to a better customer experience, as well. While larger businesses can create these same partnerships, they’re usually less willing or less able to do so quickly or in a way that feels authentic to their customers.
SMALL BUSINESSES HAVE SOME BIG ADVANTAGES OVER THEIR MUCH LARGER COMPETITORS
6. BRING YOUR PASSION EVERYDAY
Small businesses have a surprising number of advantages over larger companies. Find ways to maximize these six advantages and you’ll become a fierce competitor in your market, no matter how small your operation.
1. PROVIDE A PERSONAL TOUCH
As a small business owner, you have the opportunity to personally interact with your customers and develop relationships with them in a way that few owners of large corporations get to do. This is especially true for owners of local businesses with intimate ties to their communities. Serve your customers with intention and work directly with them to build loyalty and trust between them and your brand.
2. BE FLEXIBLE
Nimble small businesses have a huge advantage over more bureaucratic larger businesses. Big businesses often have multiple layers of approval that need to be passed through before a new idea is adopted. Small businesses can usually move much faster and create meaningful changes quickly. As a small business owner, staying flexible and keeping things simple will pay dividends during times of change and growth.
3. STAY AGILE
Responding to problems that arise and modifying processes that are no longer working is easier when your team is lean and can act fast. In the same way that large companies have a harder time implementing new ideas, they’re also slower to fix problems. A small, agile team can communicate quickly with one another and get things done fast.
4. KEEP IN TOUCH
As a small business owner, one of the smartest things you can do is interact directly with customers to understand their needs and wants. Ask them about their pain points so you can offer better solutions. Big businesses often lack the ability to get in touch with their customers and use surveys and market research to replicate this effort. Spending time with customers on the ground level is always a valuable use of your time and will put you at a huge advantage over your bigger competitors.
5. BE WILLING TO PARTNER
Small businesses can find power in partnering with other complementary small businesses in their community or industry. By partnering, each business can co-promote the other and, together,
10
Business ownership is as much a personal endeavor for most small business owners as it is a means of earning a living. They bring passion to their work and to serving customers in ways that few larger businesses can imitate. This may be your biggest advantage of all. Let your passion for your work drive your dedication to create an exceptional product with unmatched customer service. There’s no doubt that competing with larger businesses is a challenge. But, never forget that it’s just as hard for big businesses to compete against a small business that displays these six characteristics and makes a powerful impact in their market. Celebrate your powers as a small business and use them each day to best serve your customers. When you’re looking for help to maximize these characteristics and compete with the large businesses in your space, look to other small business entrepreneurs and experts who have been there before, like a SCORE mentor. A SCORE mentor will work with you to develop a strategy using the powers of a small business so you can successfully go head-to-head with your larger competitors. Contact a SCORE mentor today.
You can reach SCORE at cantonscore@gmail.com or phone 330-451-6509. You can learn more about the chapter, including upcoming workshops, at www.canton.score.org. GET TO KNOW THE YOUNG PROFESSIONALS WHO WILL SHAPE THE FUTURE OF CANTON/STARK COUNTY! EACH MONTH, WE’LL INTRODUCE YOU TO A YP WHO IS LIVING OR WORKING, BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY, THRIVING IN STARK COUNTY! Name: Megan Conkle Occupation/Title/Place of work: Director of Housing and Supportive Services (YWCA of Canton) Age: 30 Why are you interested in Stark County’s Young Professionals initiative? I’ve always been surrounded by seasoned veterans in my field; I love being able to engage with individuals with similar lived experience who are also my same age! What would you share to encourage other people to join? Leadership Stark County was an amazing experience for me. The program connected me to people within the community who are on the same trajectory as myself. It’s not always easy to find “your people,” but LSC made it simple! Did you grow up in Stark? If so, where? If not, where did you move from and why? Yes! I grew up in Uniontown and went to Hoover High School. Why do you stay in Stark County, from both a personal and professional point of view? When I moved back to Stark County, it was supposed to be a stepping stone to a bigger city. Once I started laying roots as an adult, it became clear to me that Canton was a long-term home. Professionally, I’ve found people here who challenge me and help me grow. I am able to create meaningful change in the community I grew up in. Personally, I have found this to be an amazing place to live and play. It has big city vibes without the disadvantages of city living. Amazing parks, great public facilities, local culture, and – on a personal level – my family!
What do you see as valuable opportunities for YPs in Stark County when it comes to career opportunities, cultural access, leadership or community involvement opportunities? The amazing thing about Stark County is it’s big, but not too big. Which is to say, there are tons of things to get involved in, and there are amazing opportunities to take on leadership roles within the community. If people want to grow in their career, there are absolutely ways to do so. What would attract more YPs to Stark County? I’m no economic developer, but in my experience, young professionals leave Stark County to live in more progressive locations. Ohio as a whole has become less inviting to young people who are looking to live somewhere where their values and beliefs are reflected. Luckily, in Canton, there is a lot of great work being done around this. For example, this year was Canton’s PRIDE fest, and the event was an amazing success! What do you do in the evenings or on the weekends for fun in Stark County or NE Ohio? I love downtown Canton. Anytime someone suggests doing something different, we always end up back downtown. My favorites are Basil, Milestone, and Imperial Room. A Stark County hidden gem is Meadowlake Swim and Golf club. My family and friends call it “club country” and we get a swim and golf pass each year--it’s so affordable! Could you see yourself spending your lifetime in Stark County and if not, what would cause you to leave? Yes! I love Stark County. My friends are here, my family is here, and my community is here. In fact, rather than leave, I try to recruit all my friends from big cities to move here!
What do you like MOST about Stark County? Nothing beats Stark County. From a practical perspective, I have been able to really plant roots here. I was able to afford to buy a home in a vibrant, diverse neighborhood and have virtually no commute. I would NEVER have been able to do that in a larger city while working in my non-profit field. There is something so meaningful about owning a small place of the city I grew up in.
Megan Conkle
What would you change about Stark County if you could? There is some troubling income disparity within the county, and I’d love to see some progressive solutions to creating more equitable neighborhoods and townships.

BIZ Bitz Emmy, Peabody and Webby Award-winning actor, writer and producer KeeganMichael Key will take the stage during the Class of 2022 Enshrinement at noon Aug. 6 at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium He will engage the crowd during several points in the show. “As the new Hall of Famers deliver their speeches at the Enshrinement, their emotion and energy build to the moment they say their final ‘thank you,’ “ said Jim Porter, President of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. “For the Class of 2022, the Hall looked for ways to sustain that excitement throughout the program, and Keegan-Michael Key immediately came to mind. His talent, his love of football, which was obvious to fans watching ‘NFL Honors’ this past February, and his immediate enthusiasm when approached about being part of Enshrinement Weekend combined to make this a special opportunity for those inside Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium on Aug. 6.” “As a lifelong football fan, I am excited to be a part of honoring some of the greatest to ever play the game,” Key said. “Connecting with audiences, making people laugh and engaging with fans are at the root of what I love to do.” Visit Canton and ArtsinStark are providing support to bring Key to Canton. Key has hosted “NFL Honors” twice – in 2017 and in Los Angeles prior to Super Bowl LVI. That broadcast included the announcement of the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s Class of 2022. Tickets for their Enshrinement are available at https://profootballhof.me/ HOFEnshrinement. Known for his extraordinarily diverse skill set and wide-ranging talent in both comedy and drama, Key redefines what it means to be a multi-hyphenate in the worlds of film, television and theater. He came to worldwide attention as co-creator and co-star, alongside Jordan Peele, of Comedy Central’s groundbreaking sketch series “Key & Peele,” which won the 2016 Emmy Award for “Outstanding Variety Sketch Series.” An alum of The Second City, Key recently hosted ‘Saturday Night Live.’ CSE Federal Credit Union was recently named the #1 Credit Union in Ohio by Forbes for the third consecutive year, and one of the top overall credit unions in the United States. Innis Maggiore, the nation’s leading positioning ad agency, is a 2022 Silver Telly Award winner for a TV commercial it produced for the Aultman Health System, a healthcare provider dedicated to leading its communities to improved health. Placing under the Local TV General-Hospital category, the 30-second commercial, titled “We’ve Got You” emphasizes Aultman’s position as the healthcare leader most dedicated to the patient and community. The spot points out that, “With nearly 130 years in your back yard, Aultman knows you and knows your community better than anyone. We’re your neighbors, your friends, your family, and we want you to be the healthiest you can be.” The concept for the “We’ve Got You” commercial was the outcome of a collaboration of Justin Allen, creative director of web, Scott Edwards, executive creative director, Lee-Ann DeMeo, creative director, Ashley Johnson, senior project manager, Jeff McMahan, senior account supervisor, and the Aultman Marketing Team. This is Innis Maggiore’s 29th Telly Award overall and its second Silver, with recent gold and bronze awards on behalf of Smith’s Dairy. The Black College Football Hall of Fame Classic returns to the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s campus over Labor Day weekend, Sept. 1-4, 2022. After two years of featuring Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) in the South, this year’s
Classic will showcase Ohio’s only HBCU football team, the Central State University Marauders, as they square off against the Winston-Salem State University Rams on Sunday, Sept. 4, in Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium. The game will headline four days of festivities held around Canton celebrating HBCU culture and excellence. Central State boasts a proud football tradition. From 1986 to 1992, the Marauders dominated Black college football and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, winning five consecutive Black college football national championships and two NAIA National Football Championships. Central State has produced three Black College Football Hall of Fame inductees: Hugh Douglas, Billy Joe and Erik Williams. Head coach Kevin Porter will make his debut at the helm for the Marauders at this year’s Classic. Since 2011, Winston-Salem State’s football team has played in six conference championship games and has made four NCAA Division II playoff appearances. Rams legends Bill Hayes and Timmy Newsome have been enshrined in the Black College Football Hall of Fame. Head coach Robert Massey will make his first appearance as the Rams’ permanent head coach at the Classic after two seasons serving as WSSU’s interim head coach. The schools’ renowned marching bands – the Invincible Marching Marauders and the Red Sea of Sound – will perform at halftime and in the “5th Quarter” immediately after the game. The game, airing on NFL Network, will be the first nationally televised regular-season Division II football game since Wingate University played Newberry College on Nov. 12, 2016. Tickets for the game are on sale. Reserved seating is available from $30 to $70. Club seating is also available for $155. Upscale food and beverages are included in the club seating ticket price. Group rates are available. For all ticket options, please visit www.profootballhof.com/events/2022/09/ bcfhofclassic22/. Have business news you’d like to share via Biz Bitz?
