Letter from the Head of School I
t is with a deep sense of gratitude that I thank the many donors who contributed to our school in 2017-18. Your generosity supports the wonderful education we provide for every CFA student. Your gifts enable us to teach three-and-a-half year olds to read, seniors to master college level work through 17 different advanced placement courses, and students to be successful in exciting and challenging classes and programs in between.
33 Class of 2018 35 Academic Awards 37 Class Notes
Equally important, donations enable us to teach students how to take risks, learn from mistakes, and rebound with wisdom, resilience and passion.
Design: Cole Dittmer Associate Director of Advancement for Marketing & Communications
It is through all of this our students will truly Go Further. With great appreciation for your faith in our school,

Why We Support Cape Fear Academy Our family is honored to contribute and support Cape Fear Academy’s vision by donating to the
Annual Fund. We believe in the mission of Cape Fear Academy and make the Annual Fund a philanthropic priority each year. Through the years, we have seen the tremendous impact this education has had on our boys. They consistently receive nurturing support from their teachers and continue to be academically challenged. As an alumnus, parent, and trustee, I have seen how transformative and powerful giving to Cape Fear Academy can be. Parent participation in the Annual Fund sends a strong message about our CFA community’s belief in philanthropy and the vitality of our school. I have personally seen how a culture of generosity expands learning opportunities through enhancements to the classrooms, upgraded technology, and increased professional development for teachers, to name a few. We are so thankful for all the many relationships we have made through our life and time at Cape Fear Academy. From serving on committees to volunteering on campus, our family has connected and developed friendships with so many individuals and families. Our CFA community is truly second to none, and we are proud to have the opportunity to enjoy all the benefits it provides. We will continue our commitment to CFA and give many thanks for all of the successful programs, outstanding faculty, and lasting relationships. Why I Give to CFA “Bob and I continue to support Cape Fear Academy because we want to see this academic institution grow and thrive for many generations to come. For us personally though, we also continue to give because of the feeling of gratitude. We are grateful for the excellent educational foundation all three of our children received at CFA. We are thankful for the many opportunities they experienced not just in the classroom but also in athletics, the fine arts and community service venues. We are appreciative for CFA faculty, staff and coaches who helped one of our daughters fulfill her dream of playing on a Division 1 college field hockey team. Continuing to give to Cape Fear Academy years after our youngest graduated is a way of saying thank you! Thank you for all that was provided to our children that ensured they would be successful in their next academic endeavor.”

Fall 50 Giving Challenge In November of 2017 an anonymous donor issued an exciting challenge to all of our current parents. If 50% of all current parents made a contribution to the Annual Fund before the Thanksgiving break, this person would contribute $50,000 in support of the construction of the Science & Innovation Center. More than 20 volunteers assisted the Advancement Team in making calls and sending emails to encourage donations along with a creative email and social media campaign to spread the word. The effort was a huge success!

Kurt Taylor ’07 & Anna van Rens Taylor ’08 Now both living and working in Wilmington, Kurt Taylor and Anna van Rens Taylor were married at St. James Episcopal Church in Sept. 2013, two years after graduating from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. Later in 2013, Anna began her career with Live Oak Bank and Kurt founded Untappd, Inc. in Wilmington, which is a geosocial networking service and phone app that allows its users to check in as they drink beers, and share these check-ins and their locations with their friends. “We think Wilmington is a great place to live and work, and we want to leverage our momentum to add more and more jobs here to help the area continue to grow and thrive,” he said. “We’ve been very fortunate to bring on smart, driven people at the company, and with a lot of hard work and a little luck, things have started to take off.”
In November 2018 Untappd, Inc. was listed as the 53rd fastest-growing tech company in the U.S. and No. 1 in North Carolina by Deloitte Technology. Both Kurt and Anna attribute Cape Fear Academy with providing a solid foundation for their college years and their professional careers. “At CFA I always felt encouraged to ask questions, explore new ideas, and find something that I was passionate about” Kurt Taylor said. “However, at the same time there were always expectations and goals that caused you to work hard and want to succeed. I think this combination is unique, and I believe those experiences and life skills helped prepare me for college and beyond.” Along with success in their professional careers, Kurt and Anna recently welcomed their first child, Marshall, in September 2018. Construction began on the newest addition to the Cape Fear Academy Campus—the Science and Innovation Center in 2018. The 4200-square foot space consists of three cutting-edge spaces that allows students at Cape Fear Academy to discover new life skills, explore their entrepreneurial spirit and support STEM-based curriculum. The new facility was built by Thomas Construction and Wells Brothers Construction. Both students and donors were able to take part in the construction along the way with the groundbreaking (pictured above, left) on Sept. 6, 2017, and the steel signing (above, right) on Feb. 15, 2018. 2001 Mrs. Jennifer Smith Bissette* Mrs. Allison Wagner Lenz 2002 Mr. Adam G. Why We Give to CFA
“While CFA did bring the two of us together, it also helped build a solid foundation for college and our careers. The biggest key was learning to advocate for ourselves and invest in continued education early. We want to continue pouring into the school that gave us such a solid start and support the continued focus on equipping students with the tools they need to take initiative.” -Connor Dalton and Sarah Williams Dalton Class of 2011

First Graders Inspire Change You are never too young to make a difference—that was the lesson first graders in Gretchen Scoutelas, Carrie Casson and Angie Jackson’s classes learned in the spring of 2018 when their ocean studies curriculum led them to inspire change in one local business. “We just wanted to take something that the kids love—the beach—and make them activists in their hometown,” Scoutelas said. The University of North Carolina Wilmington’s Plastic Ocean Project organized the Ocean Friendly Establishments initiative to reduce plastic pollution, and recognize local restaurants that have agreed to serve plastic straws to customers only upon request. These establishments are then certified Ocean Friendly Establishments (OFE) and the list now includes over 110 establishments in the Cape Fear Region and along the Crystal Coast. “It is important because when you use a straw it may end up in the garbage and then blow away into the ocean, then the fish might get really sick,” said Cape Fear Academy student Garrett Ellison, who was part of the project. “If you use paper straws they just get really thin and disappear.” The students brainstormed a list of restaurants they visit often, and then wrote persuasive letters to around 10 of those restaurants asking them to become an OFE. “It really helped the kids because they decided who they wanted to send the letters to and took ownership of it,” Casson said. “Then they would come into class so eager to hear if anyone had responded.” Of the restaurants that responded, a few were already in the process of becoming an OFE, but Beach Bagels owner Tony Di Norcia responded saying he would try it for Earth Day. The response was overwhelmingly positive that he agreed to continue with skipping the straw. “The Beach Bagels Crew would like to thank you once more for inspiring us to become an even more environmentally conscious bagel shop,” stated an email back to the first graders from Beach Bagels. Now in second grade, many of the students involved with the project have helped their families become more environmentally conscious like Caroline Moore, who said she makes sure any plastic soda can rings are cut before they go in the trash. Many others also said their families now use metal or plastic straws thanks to their ocean pollution research.

10th Graders Volunteer with WARM
The CFA sophomore class spent the day hammering, leveling, painting, and more in service to Wilmington Area Rebuilding Ministry (WARM) on Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2017. The mission of WARM is to make people safer in their own homes by mobilizing volunteers to complete urgent repairs and accessibility upgrades. WARM serves low-income homeowners in Brunswick, New Hanover, and Pender counties, many of whom are elderly and/or disabled. CFA student Vance Young ’20, who was part of the volunteer team, said he enjoyed spending the day helping a woman repaint her house — a task that would be grueling and lengthy for her to complete. “Community service in high school is very important,” Young said. “Too often we get caught up in our grades, popularity, social media, etc. and getting out in the community and helping other people makes you feel good inside. It builds character and helps make you realize how fortunate we really are.”

INNOVATIONS IN TEACHING & CURRICULUM One of the messages Cape Fear Academy students take away from their time here is the importance of being a lifelong learner. That message is modeled by the Cape Fear Academy faculty and staff, who are routinely afforded the opportunity to explore professional development opportunities that enhance their teaching skills. Middle school teachers Becca Scott (math and science) and Rebecca Wells (science and social studies) were able to attend the Learning & the Brain conference on The Science of Innovation in San Francisco from February 15-17, 2018. Learning & the Brain’s national conference series connects educators with the latest research on learning and the brain, and its implications on education. Scott and Wells said the conference fit perfectly with Cape Fear Academy’s emphasis on STEM and entrepreneurial thinking. One of the messages of the conference was to encourage students to be active, flexible thinkers.
Becca Scott, left, and Rebecca Wells, right, in San Francisco for the Learning & the Brain Conference
“We both came back super inspired,” Scott said. “The thing that appealed the most to us about this conference was that it was all based on the neuroscience behind learning … that is real data and the newest information on teaching we have. We are able to relay that to our students and jumpstart their ability to be flexible thinkers and give them an experience they are not going to get at any other school.” One of the ways Wells uses what she learned at the conference in her classroom is to encourage her students to think outside of what they already know. Both Scott and Wells have been encouraged by the effects the shift to entrepreneurial and design-centered thinking is having on their students. “My rubrics now really try to focus on how they chose to showcase their individual talents and creativity while learning a subject,” Wells said. “When we think of what we want from future leaders of our world, we want people who are engaged in our society and can solve complex problems,” Scott said. “If we can get 12-13 year olds to do that, it gives me hope for the future.”
