ATHLETIC AWARDS 2019-2020


Upper School Athletes of the Year are voted on by the CFA Coaching Staff based upon the coach-ability and leadership of the athlete. Minimum participation in two (2) varsity sports, preferably three (3), also based upon the degree of skill in both or all three sports. Upper School Female Athlete of the Year: Recipient

Chloe Kernan – Washington University in St. Louis Chloe Kernan is a three-sport athlete in Varsity Girls Tennis, Varsity Girls Basketball, and Varsity Track. During her senior year, she scored her 2,000th career basketball point, was named NCISAA All-State in Basketball (3rd time), CRC Conference Player of the Year (3rd time), CRC All-Conference (5th time), Wilmington All-Area (5th time), and CRC All-Conference in Tennis (3rd time). In her first ever track meet in her career, she won both her races, just adding to her legacy as an athlete. Her coaches have the following to say about Chloe: “Chloe is my floor general. A coach on the floor, but a leader and a greater person off the court.” “In my brief time with Chloe, I quickly realized what makes her such an exceptional athlete. She is always learning. She absorbs everything and immediately uses the information to improve her performance.” “Chloe might be the top female basketball player in CFA history, but what makes her special is her support of her teammates and her happiness for their success.” She led CFA to two final fours in the last three seasons and won three straight conference regular season/ tournament titles. Chloe will be attending one of the top universities in the country and continuing her basketball career at Washington University in St. Louis. Congratulations Chloe!

Upper School Male Athletes of the Year: Recipients

Miles Lindstrom – UNC Chapel Hill Vance Young – UNC Chapel Hill

Miles Lindstrom is a three-sport athlete in Varsity Boys Soccer, Varsity Swimming, and Varsity Boys Golf. During his career, he has been named CRC All-Conference in soccer, swimming, and golf. He was a state champion goalie making spectacular saves in the 2018 Boys Soccer State Championship Game. His coaches say: “Miles perseveres like no other player on the golf course. He always found a way to improve his game and strived to get better every day.” “Miles worked very hard to transition from playing in the field to a goalie. His hard work and dedication to his position impressed all in the program. Miles’ sense of humor in practice kept the team loose and strengthened team chemistry.” “Miles Lindstrom’s resilience is what makes him such a great athlete. Whether it is being changed over from playing in the field to a goalie, or coming back even after a surprise 500 free, Miles Lindstrom shows up and works hard at whatever sport he may be in and no matter the challenges that are thrown at him along the way.” Miles has definitely made his impact at Cape Fear Academy and will have a great academic career at UNC Chapel Hill. Congratulations Miles! Vance Young is a three-sport athlete in Varsity Boys Soccer, Varsity Swimming, and Varsity Boys Golf. During his career, he has been named NCISAA All-State in Golf and CRC All-Conference in Soccer, Swimming, and Golf. He had a great run on the golf course, scoring in the top 10 at the 2019 championships along with a huge assist


in the 2018 Boys Soccer State Championship Game. His coaches say: “We were able to see his hard work pay off in his times. Vance is always one to put the work in even when it is not his sport of choice. His tenacity to always improve himself, whether on the field, in the pool, or on the golf course makes Vance such a great competitor.” “Vance is a natural leader on and off the field. The players all respected his point of view and listened intently to what he had to say. The coaching staff felt his halftime comments were invaluable for a technical and motivational point of view.” “Vance is a student athlete who knows when to get serious and get in the zone while on the golf course. He would find that next level and elevate his teammates to strive for greatness as well.” With a great smile and with wisdom beyond his years, Vance will have great success at UNC-Chapel Hill. Congratulations Vance!

James Z. Godwin Sportsmanship Award recipients are voted on by the CFA Coaching Staff based upon minimum participation in two (2) varsity sports, model behavior in all athletic events, and leadership in school spirit. Upper School Female James Z. Godwin Sportsmanship Award: Recipients

Pearce Lewis – UNC Chapel Hill Laura Kate Lindstrom – NC State University

Pearce Lewis is a three-sport athlete in Varsity Field Hockey, Varsity Swimming, and Varsity Girls Lacrosse while also serving as Governor of the North Carolina YMCA Youth & Government Assembly for 2019-2020.. Pearce was a CRC All-conference swimmer during her senior year and contributed to her team’s high finish in the state meet. Her coaches say: “Pearce has been a great contributor to the swim team for the last 6 years during the regular season and at the state meet. She has worked hard to improve her strokes and has been willing to move around to different events over the years to help her team. Her contagious smile and positive attitude will be truly missed.” “Pearce has shown great leadership qualities as well as being one of the hardest working players on the field. Pearce does a great job at getting her message across for those around her to understand.” “Not only is she respected as a leader when speaking, but also when she steps onto the field.” “Pearce brings energy and competitiveness to every drill, practice, and game.” “Pearce Lewis is the embodiment of team spirit and fun. She emanates good vibes and brings the team up when they’re feeling down”. We are excited to see her continue in public policy at UNC-Chapel Hill. Congratulations Pearce! Laura Kate Lindstrom is a three-sport athlete in Varsity Girls Tennis, Varsity Swimming, and Varsity Girls Lacrosse. She was named CRC All-conference in tennis and swimming during her senior year. Her coaches say: “LK is calm and consistent. Whether it’s time for practice or to step onto the game field to play, LK is the type of player who you can count on to always give 100% effort, while doing the little things right. LK is someone who in a high pressure situation can make the correct decisions and calm any situation. She is the type of player you hate to play against, but love to have on your team.” “Laura Kate is someone I would love to have on every team. Her positive attitude, charisma, and leadership


make anyone on any of her teams, either returning or brand new, feel welcome.” We know LK will be running an operation when she obtains her degree in finance and supply chain management at NC State University. Congratulations Laura Kate!

Upper School Male James Z. Godwin Sportsmanship Award: Recipient

Oscar Rautiainen – Appalachian State University/Finnish Army

Oscar Rautiainen is a two-sport athlete in Varsity Boys Soccer and Varsity Swimming. Oscar, also known as the “Fantastic Fin” was a CRC all-conference swimmer during his senior year and contributed to the state team. His coaches say: “All of his teammates love Oscar. As part of the soccer team, his excitement was contagious, and always had an encouraging word for each player. His intensity in practice and his physical play helped improve his teammates, I will never forget him and Coach Martin dashing across the field after the final whistle in the State Championship.” “Over his last 2 years on the swim team, Oscar has worked hard to improve his times to qualify for states and has worked on learning other strokes so that he can make a bigger contribution to the team at meets Oscar’s enthusiasm for life is apparent every day and he is always able to make any situation more fun and entertaining, whether it is practice, a meet, or dance rehearsal.” Oscar has deferred his admission to Appalachian State University for a year and will continue a family legacy of spending a year in the Finnish Army. Congratulations Oscar!

Coastal Rivers Conference Academic Award recipients are voted on by the CFA Coaching Staff and awarded to a student with a minimum 3.2 cumulative GPA. The student athlete must be a skilled athlete in at least two varsity sports and must have completed two years at CFA. Coastal Rivers Conference Female Academic Award: Recipient

Lilly Lancaster – Wake Forest University

Lilly Lancaster is a two-sport athlete in Varsity Field Hockey and Varsity Girls Lacrosse. Lilly is an NCISAA AllState Field Hockey player as well as an all-area lacrosse player. Her dedication to her craft and to her academic career has been demonstrated with an offer to play NCAA Division I athletics. Her coaches say: “Lilly has become a very respected leader on and off the field. Lilly has demanded respect from her peers not by being outspoken, but from her consistent work ethic, her ability to take direction and make corrections, and by constantly doing the little things right. She is the type of player that makes coaching easy, and the type of player who makes everyone better around them.” “Lilly Lancaster’s intense dedication to a sport that is almost non-existent in this part of the state is inspirational. She is a shining example of what happens when you put in the time, effort, and care.” We are excited to see Lilly on the turf in Winston-Salem as she heads to Wake Forest University as a field hockey player for the ACC Demon Deacons. Congratulations Lilly!


Coastal Rivers Conference Male Academic Award: Recipient

David Novak – UNC-Wilmington

David Novak is a three-sport athlete in Varsity Surfing, Varsity Boys Tennis, and on the CFA Sailing Team during his senior year. David has played four sports in his CFA career. His coaches say: “David was a key member of the CFA Sailing Team. He grew into the role of team captain after four years on the team. He attended every regatta in 2019-20, and was willing and able to serve in any role (skipper or crew) needed by the team. He was clearly the team leader in organization and setting the tone, and our team’s top crew. He will be sorely missed by the team but we wish him good luck and hope to see him on the water as a member of UNCW’s Sailing Team in 2020-21.” “David Novak is an outstanding teammate. He would show up to practice always trying to get better. His senior year he was ready to make an impact in the line up and as a leader. We will miss you Novak & will get that state championship for you next year!” David will take his leadership skills to UNC-Wilmington where he will study computer science. Congratulations David!

Middle School Athletes of the Year are voted on by the CFA Coaching Staff based upon the coach-ability and leadership of the athlete. Minimum participation in two (2) sports, also based upon the degree of skill in all sports. Middle School Female Athletes of the Year: Recipients

Lucy Dimock Delia McFarlane

Lucy Dimock is a three-sport athlete in Varsity Girls Tennis, MS/JV Girls Basketball, and Varsity Girls Lacrosse. Lucy was a CRC All-Conference selection in tennis and a starter on her basketball and lacrosse teams. Her coaches say: “Although Lucy is young in age on the team, she doesn’t look inexperienced when she hits the field. Lucy has an incredible eye for placement shots, and truly makes playing offense look effortless. I’m excited to see how much more of an impact she’ll have on the field in years to come. Lucy is a force to be reckoned with!” “As goes Lucy, so does the MS basketball team. As the leading scorer in both the 7th and 8th grades, Lucy was a force on the basketball court. She scored 20 points in. our epic 44-40 OT win over HCA. The team could always count on Lucy to come through in the clutch.” Congratulations Lucy! Delia McFarlane is a three-sport athlete in JV Volleyball, MS/JV/Varsity Girls Basketball, and Varsity Girls Soccer. Delia is a true competitor as she answered all the calls from coaches at the JV and Varsity levels when they needed players. She was there to help and improve each team she represented. From her coaches: “Delia is a driven athlete and only has one speed—fast and furious. She motivates herself to strive to be the best and that motivates her teammates to emulate her drive and determination. Delia wants to learn and improve and is a driving force in the building of our volleyball program.” “Delia is as tough as they come. She never backs down from a challenge on the basketball court or soccer field. She had to be reminded that she was only allowed five fouls. She grabbed a starting spot on the soccer team the last two years.” Congratulations Delia!


Middle School Male Athlete of the Year: Recipient

John Franck

John Franck is a two-sport athlete in Varsity Boys Soccer and MS Boys Basketball. A starter for both teams during the season, John was a difference maker leading his MS Boys Basketball team to the SMSL Championship for the second year in a row while also contributing to a NCISAA Quarterfinal appearance on the soccer team. From his coaches: “John is one of the most competitive and hardworking athletes that I have had the pleasure of coaching. However, it is his consistent respect for coaches and teammates, as well as the other team,that truly sets him apart. I cannot think of a more coachable and more deserving student athlete.” “John earned his spot as an 8th grader on the varsity soccer team. He soaked up instruction from the coaching staff and upperclassman. The seniors all had confidence in John’s play and respected his work ethic. John has a very bright future on the soccer field.” Congratulations John!

The Middle School Sportsmanship Award recipients are voted on by the CFA Coaching Staff based upon minimum participation in two (2) sports, model behavior in all athletic events, and leadership in school spirit. Middle School Female Sportsmanship Award: Recipient

Liza Wells

Liza Wells is a three-sport athlete in Varsity Girls Tennis, MS/JV Girls Basketball, and Varsity Girls Lacrosse. As a starter on the basketball and lacrosse teams, Liza contributed to the success of both teams especially in lacrosse during this season’s big wins over St. Mary’s and West Brunswick HS. From her coaches: “Liza brings such great energy to every practice, and game. Although she might not be a leader on the scoreboard, Liza is the one who gets the ‘dirty work’ done with little credit.” “Without hesitation Liza steps up in transition, fights for every ground ball, rides hard, and does whatever is asked of her to help win a game. Liza is a true team player with an attitude that inspires those around her.” Congratulations Liza!

Middle School Male Sportsmanship Award: Recipients

Ben Kane Ben Scoutelas

Ben Kane is a two-sport athlete in MS Boys Soccer and Varsity Boys Tennis. Ben would go on to win the coaches award in soccer this fall before suffering an injury derailing his 8th grade basketball career. Ben rebounded by making the Varsity Tennis team this spring. From his coaches: “Ben Kane has all the tools for success. He’s hard working, respectful, open minded & just a great person. He will be a big part of CFA tennis over the next 4 years.” “Ben came to soccer practice ready and committed to getting better each and every day. I could count on his hustle, determination, and team first attitude in each game.” Congratulations Ben!


Ben Scoutelas is a three-sport athlete in JV Boys Soccer, MS Boys Basketball, and MS Boys Lacrosse. Ben won the coaches award on his MS Basketball team this year before suffering an injury that delayed his lacrosse career. His coaches say: “Ben was always a great team player to his teammates and respectful to the other teams. He never gave up at practice and in games. He never complained about anything, except when we made bets for conditioning.” “Ben is a phenomenal multi-sport athlete who is committed and dedicated to the sports he plays. It was a pleasure to coach this young man and his future is bright in athletics. Ben’s love of athletics is contagious.” Congratulations Ben!
