2021 UPPER SCHOOL ACADEMIC AWARDS CEREMONY Welcome Dear Upper School Community, Welcome to a celebration of CFA students! These awards are an opportunity for us to showcase the efforts and accomplishments of the community. The accolades within these pages provide insight into the outstanding work happening at Cape Fear Academy and the variety of avenues students have to customize their education experience. As we celebrate the accomplishments listed, please take a moment to reflect and acknowledge
The Head of School’s Purchase Award is a tradition that highlights exceptional work produced by students in the Visual Arts program. This year, three student pieces have been selected as the latest additions to CFA’s permanent collection of art. Senior Elena Crvendakic’s fantastically smooth and reflective graphite pencil drawing depicts a close-up view of machinery, specifically the drive chain and wheel of a motorcycle. Elena’s original idea grew from a series of drawing studies of her father’s motorcycle. Throughout the series she explored viewpoints, and the way light and shadow appear on the surfaces of the motorcycle. This final drawing, entitled “Miroslav’s Honda Varadero,” beautifully highlights Elena’s refined drawing skills and creative vision. “Save the Bees” is an exquisite acrylic painting on a shaped board by senior Delilah Mills. It features a photorealistic honey bee on the surface of a painterly, geometric honeycomb. The beloved honey bee was Delilah’s creative focus for her Independent Study in Visual Art, and this piece reflects Delilah’s reverence and passion for this creature. It is the result of careful planning, focused preparation of the shaped surface, astute color mixing, and joyful painting. “RPM” by freshman Sydney Cortina is a powerful composition of cars and movement. This fabulous design connotes speed and fluidity, and was rendered in grayscale using alcohol-based art markers. Sydney’s sensitive technique with this medium and her thoughtful use of contrasting elements evoke a sense of dazzling shine on sleek, clean surfaces. “RPM” is a thrill to view! Congratulations to these dedicated art students!
the efforts of all our students. Each has grown, and although they may not be included in this year’s awards listing, we want to acknowledge the roads traveled and the efforts afforded. We look forward to witnessing continued growth in the pursuit of knowledge and new skills. Each CFA student deserves accolades for making progress on their personal journey of self discovery. The awards enclosed symbolize the fulfillment of CFA’s mission to discover and develop individual potential. The quality of the work produced continues to be impressive regardless of the circumstances. Congratulations to all the honorees for their achievements and thank you for inspiring each of us to try new endeavors in pursuit of mastery. Elena Crvendakic

We would like to recognize, on behalf of CFA’s High Tide Literary and Arts magazine, two students, whose energy and leadership helped fuel this year’s magazine. Lilly Chiavetta and Natasha Matt worked together to construct and design the publication. Their creativity and desire to improve the magazine included time spent during study halls, lunch, flex, and even at home. These two volunteered their determination and their ideas to make High Tide reflect both the “isolation” of Covid and the “togetherness” within CFA’s community. Please congratulate Lilly and Natasha for all their hard work and dedication and for receiving the 2021 High Tide Award.

Although highly allergic to any insect in eastern North Carolina and truly leaves his fate to a coin toss, Amir Shaheen never falters with his positive attitude and continuous generosity. Passing time during his study hall, you would always find Amir engaging in conversation with anyone who would listen to him no matter if you were a senior friend or young freshman. Amir embodies kindness and friendship and continuously provides happiness and laughter throughout the CFA hallways. The day Amir Shaheen graduates, there will be a hole in CFA’s heart.

The English Department award is given annually to a senior who has demonstrated excellence in the English classroom, a love of reading and writing, and leadership related to subject in and/or out of the classroom. The Class of 2021 has many students who demonstrate a strong love and ability in English, but two students rose to the top. First into AP Lit every A Period, William Dahl’s bounding enthusiasm for dissecting complexity in challenging texts like Hamlet and Beloved, positioned him as a leader in critical thinking and in discussions. William’s work in Upper School English classes illustrates his desire for excellence, inspiring others to engage more deeply in literary conversations. William not only possesses genuine curiosity and love of learning, he consistently hones his intellectual capacity, models a commitment to go further, and leads others to higher potential. Co-award winner Bellamy Koonce is an enthusiastic and critical reader whose ability to question the meaning of texts consistently invigorated her classroom community. Fiercely determined and always eager to share her views, Bellamy invested herself in AP Lit this year to genuinely improve her skills as a reader, thinker, and writer. In her role as Publications writer and editor over the years, Bellamy illustrated her passion for writing and her drive to embolden the voices and experiences of CFA students—leadership in and out of the classroom indeed. Both of these young individuals inspire their peers to engage more deeply in living a literary life. Congratulations to Will and Bellamy!

Awarded to two students, the Director’s Award for Band honors two outstanding senior members of the CFA Band program. This year’s winners are Amir Shaheen and Adrian Jones.
Department Award Recipient Mia Weckel The CFA Computer Science Department recognizes a student who has mastered a variety of class offerings and demonstrated strengths in computer science skills such as logical thinking, collaboration, and creativity among many others. This student embodies all of these skills and much more. In addition to being a top student in computer science classes, this student has been a leader on the robotics team, is one of the few original team members, and has been a catalyst for other student’s interest in computer science and robotics. She loves coding, and has extended her skills by attending summer programs every summer for many years. It is my pleasure to present the 2021 computer science department award to Mia Weckel.
Adrian is a true performing artist in every way. From the bandstand to the choral risers and from shining in musical productions to exploding onto the regional and national dance scene, he always wows the audience. He will always be remembered as the true Grinch of the Holiday Band Concerts! Even though Mr. Camp forgot the green paper prop for his Grinch performance, Adrian kept the show rolling. Because of Amir’s tremendous musicianship, he has helped to steer the band since his freshman year. Mr. Camp will most fondly remember Amir’s freshman year Pep Band. Whether cranking out high notes on his silver trumpet, throwing out jokes like smoke-bombs during band rehearsals or instigating YAG debates in the lobby before band class, his presence in the band will be missed beyond measure. Adrian and Amir, your impact on the band program will continue long after your final fermata!

Department Award Recipients
Alexandra Johnson and Erik Head The AP Capstone program is in its second year, offering both the AP Seminar and AP Research courses. AP Seminar requires diligence and curiosity, while maintaining a balance of individual and group work. Students hone their research, writing, and presentation skills over a myriad of content. In the AP Research course, students employ the skills they learned in AP Seminar to produce an original research project. Students choose a topic of inquiry to investigate, develop a hypothesis, and design a research project to test their hypothesis. A successful AP Seminar student is naturally curious, inquisitive, and a strong verbal and written communicator. Alexandra Johnson checks all those boxes and much more! She was committed to every facet of the class with a genuine desire to improve her research skills. Alexandra is an exceptional presenter and writer and an allaround outstanding person. It is an honor to present her with this year’s AP Seminar award.
Awarded to two musicians who must not only maintain a high degree of instrument proficiency through practice and rehearsal, but they must also maintain superior grades and devote time to a wide range of extracurricular pursuits. In doing so, these high school musicians display traits that are vital to success in instrumental music: Endurance, Knowledge, Unselfishness, Dependability and Loyalty. This year’s winners are Adaline Bloom and Kate Meine. Congratulations to these two for the highest outward achievement of any US Band student. Addie is an incredibly talented musician on both saxophone and violin. Being selected to participate in the 2021 Governor’s School of North Carolina is a testament to her incredible musicianship and talent. Katie has worked for years to achieve a successful audition for the North Carolina All State Band and this was her year! She is an incredible musician and scholar. Addie and Katie’s dedication to outward competition and progress build up all those around them. Congratulations!
Erik’s curiosity about the local water supply and his desire to work with ecosystems led him to complete research on how to combat algae blooms without harming the diversity of an ecosystem. He set the standard for the class in all elements of the research task, including experimental design, data collection and analysis, and the presentation of his results. ART
Cameron Tait, Gavin Bahner and Logan Aimone
Excellence in Visual Art Award Recipients
Awarded to three outstanding juniors or seniors that play a critical role in the leadership of the band by setting a positive example for underclassmen to follow. These upperclassmen are the shapers of a legacy that will be passed on to future band members. This is a legacy of not only high musicianship, but more importantly attitude and positive disposition. This year’s winners are Cameron Tait, Gavin Bahner and Logan Aimone.
Nadya Kotlyarevska and Elliot Wells
Cameron deserves congratulations on yet again making Southeastern District Honor Band. Cameron’s consistent high-level musicianship has continued since middle school. Gavin provides great balance in the trumpet section. It has been tremendous to watch his growth as a musician over the past four years. Logan has been such a solid musician since his middle school band days; his forever humble attitude is only matched by his incredible ability to turn the word “Band” into a verb. These three individuals are incredible wind instrument musicians and, without them, the drumline would have never happened this year!
CHORUS Independent Study Vocal Ensemble Recipient Davis Kranchalk Independent Study has been very challenging this year due to new schedules and Covid distancing and restrictions. In years past, members of Independent Study would lovingly come together to sing and rehearse during their lunch time, but since one must remove their mask to eat and drink this created a bit of a problem for rehearsal times. Nevertheless, this award-winning student always took it upon himself to be prepared, and to quickly learn his part in order to help others when needed. He was also a HUGE help and a leader in this year’s Upper School Musical, Something Rotten!, knowing every single role of that musical. And as if everything I’ve already stated about this exceptional student wasn’t enough, he is also this year’s Production Stage Manager of the Middle School Musical, Mary Poppins Jr. It is my pleasure to award Mr. Davis Kranchalk for the second consecutive year in a row the Excellence in Independent Study Award. He truly deserves this honor and recognition!
Honors Vocal Ensemble Recipient Anne Frances Frazier This student joined Honors Vocal Ensemble after the first few days of school had passed and has been such a positive asset to the ensemble as a whole upon her entrance. This young woman, who plans to major in music in college, is unbelievably talented, and she gives so much heart and soul in her singing and performing. This past year, Anne Frances was one of the two Minstrels, a Troupe Member, and THE SAD LITTLE EGG in Something Rotten! She sang the full solo in Up to the Mountain in the Spring Chorus Performance, and she has clearly demonstrated her gift of having Perfect Pitch in Chorus. Choral Director Ms. Skelly proudly presents the Excellence in Honors Vocal Ensemble Award to Anne Frances Frazier and wishes her nothing but the best in her future music studies!

Nadya Kotlyarevska is a creative presence whose ideas and good humor make everything she does in the art room sparkle. This art student is versatile! From two-dimensional design, to observational drawing and painting, to illustrating a concept, Nadya is well-rounded. Her love of the creative process has been a positive influence on everyone around her. One of Elliot Wells’ many strengths is her ability to overcome obstacles and identify opportunities when conventional thinking has failed. Elliot is a true creative problem solver! Her artwork inspires others to find fresh perspectives and come up with innovative solutions. Elliot’s diligence and depth of interest in the subject matter caused her to shine this school year in art.

DRAMA Excellence in Performance Award Recipient Charlie Murtha Because he is so humble and unassuming, Charlie Murtha would shy away from anyone calling him a STAR. But he is not only one here at CFA, he is on his way to shining bright throughout the world of the Performing Arts. Charlie raises the bar each and every time he sets foot on stage, challenging himself in every rehearsal, every class or lesson, every performance, and on his own time. He is a true artist in his desire to be present and to never stop growing in every aspect of his artistry. He is the kind of artist to which you give a key, then he opens door after door with it. Gracious and hard working, Charlie has found a balance of being his worst critic (as all actors are), and having the degree of confidence needed to be healthy and successful. Though Charlie has an abundance of talent to offer, his success will also come from his drive, passion, compassion, dedication, dignity, a kind and open heart, and an utter respect for the artistry and the people making it. For these reasons, Charlie Murtha is the winner of the Excellence in Performance Award.

Spirit of Theatre Arts Award Recipient
Technical Theatre and Design Recipient
William Dahl
Davis Kranchalk
Whether it is for a rehearsal, a class, a meeting, or a performance, this young man enters the theater with the enthusiasm of a futbol announcer yelling GOOAAALL!! With his unparalleled, unbridled positivity and encouragement of everyone in the department, William Dahl has helped to establish an overwhelmingly supportive environment for our Theatre Family. This is such a big part of the theater being a safe place to be utterly creative, to explore, to take risks, to grow, and to challenge oneself without judgement. He has established a culture of celebrating each and every member of the company, regardless of role, experience, age, or ability. Throughout the years, Will has found great depth, nuance, and mastery. From his monstrous monologue as Jerry in At Home at the Zoo, to his expert comic timing and ability to find honesty amidst an absurdist farce in Dress Rehearsal, and on to his commanding the stage as Shakespeare, he has shown exceptional range. For these reasons, William Dahl is the winner of the Spirit of Theatre Arts Award.
CFA’s Technical Theatre and Design Award is given to the student whose dedication to every aspect of technical theatre, from concept to construction of the scenic designs, to working backstage as a crew member and stage manager with unrivalled leadership. This year, the award recognizes a two-time NCTC Barbizon Lighting and Production Design Award winner, whose tireless determination to perform at the highest standard backstage and in the scene shop has been second to none. This incredible artist has taken the most courageous of risks throughout their entire four years with the CFA Theatre Department and has evolved into one of the most diversified and talented design students at CFA. An exceptional technician, artist, and set designer and all-round performing arts marvel, this year’s Technical Theatre and Design Award goes to the kind, compassionate, everso-hard-working and soon to be very much missed member of the theatre family, Davis Kranchalk.
Extraordinary Contribution to the Theatre Arts Award Recipient Lilly Chiavetta This student shared more of her talents with the Theatre Arts than almost anyone. She has not only been a leading lady and played numerous character roles on the stage, brilliantly, she has been instrumental in creating art from the drawing board, behind the scenes, and at her piano, as well. Lilly Chiavetta is a ferocious talent on stage. Despite her sweet and seemingly shy nature, she can either blow you away with a bold brassy belt, or sing with a celestial soaring soprano. She has composed music and written lyrics for several plays throughout her high school career. She has played her own music, performed her own songs, recorded music, and even directed her peers in singing her songs. She runs an impeccably tight ship as a production stage manager or ASM and is an utterly reliable crew member. This department has benefitted not only from her various talents and techniques; her kindness and generosity have helped establish a nurturing environment to be creative, supportive, and amazing.
FILMMAKING / TECHNICAL THEATRE AND DESIGN US Filmmaker Award Recipient Jack Waldrop CFA’s Outstanding Filmmaker Award is given to the student who has embraced the artform of digital filmmaking and storytelling as a way to express themselves artistically on an exceptional level. This award recognizes a student filmmaker who lives and breathes the vast world of video filmmaking. From photographing key events to designing layouts and planning content, senior editors set the tone and the example for others to follow. Thirteen seniors who served as section editors, co-editors, designers, and photographers are recognized during their years on staff: JR Johnston, Bellamy Koonce, and Anders Ljung served as co-editors of The Hurricane, which earned All North Carolina status from the North Carolina Scholastic Media Association last year. William Dahl and Alden Forkin, as co-editors of the Shoreline yearbook, continued that award-winning tradition. Alena Gianoplus, Anna Itzkowitz, Alex Johnson, Campbell McFarlane, Liza Murtagh, Davon Peebles, and Jack Reger served as section editors for the newspaper and yearbook, determining content, taking photos, writing, designing, and guiding the younger members of the staff. Allison Raible was new to the staff this year, but plunged into Publications with a passion for photography that made her designs and stories more memorable. Thanks to their efforts, four issues of the newspaper were published, and the yearbook was completed during a challenging year!
